NWM - September 2025

Page 1

DEAR READER

Welcome to September, the month where we officially welcome autumn. Yes, it’s time to swap your flip flops for cosy boots and your margaritas for a pumpkin spiced latte. It’s also time to start arguing over the thermostat…

But it’s not all bad news. Autumn has its own advantages and, as a result, it’s quietly becoming a very popular season. As the nights draw in you can look forward to evenings in front of the fire, watching your favourite show – or reading your favourite local magazine! It’s a good time to rest and recharge, before the chaos that December brings.

There are also the famed autumnal walks to look forward to. Wrap up warm and go for a long hike where you can admire the changing seasons right in front of your very eyes. What’s not to love about kicking up some golden leaves before indulging in a pub lunch?

Darker evenings also mean that it’s the ideal season to visit the theatre – and there’s plenty of entertainment to be had! Visit our What’s On? pages to discover the very best of live theatre from both Venue Cymru and Theatr Clwyd.

So happy September everyone, and I wish you all a very excellent autumn!

Llyn Padarn in Llanberis is home to the iconic Lonely Tree. Set against the backdrop of Eryri's majestic mountains, this solitary tree is a photographers dream. A symbol of endurance, this birch tree has survived against the odds to provide a romantic backdrop for swimmers and walkers alike. In fact, the Lonely Tree is located at the start of the Llyn Padarn Circular Walk, on the west side of the lake. To tackle the walk, park at the Padarn Country car park, opposite the Snowdonia Watersports Centre. Head along the shore of the lake, opting for an anti-clockwise route. Allow between two and three hours to complete this five-mile family-friendly route – and don’t forget to stop and photograph the Lonely Tree!

Welsh National Opera returns to Llandudno with thrilling autumn 2025 season

This autumn, Venue Cymru welcomes back the Welsh National Opera (WNO) with a powerful programme of world-class opera, featuring Tosca, Candide, and A Night at the Opera.

Puccini’s Tosca opens the season with a dramatic new production directed by Edward Dick. Celebrated Welsh soprano Natalya Romaniw returns in the title role, alongside Andrés Presno and Dario Solari. Conducted by Gergely Madaras, this gripping tale of love, power and betrayal is one of opera’s most thrilling experiences – filled with iconic arias including Vissi d’arte.

Leonard Bernstein’s satirical masterpiece Candide brings a different kind of energy. This visually inventive production combines animation, comedy and Broadway flair. Acclaimed Welsh actress Rakie Ayola makes her opera debut in multiple roles, joining a stellar cast led by Ed Lyon and Soraya Mafi. Directed by James Bonas, Candide offers a wild, witty journey across continents and cultures.

For those new to opera or simply looking for a magical evening of music, A Night at the Opera brings together WNO’s Chorus and Orchestra for an unforgettable concert of operatic highlights – perfect for all ages.

WNO also continues its outreach work across North Wales through its Schools Concerts and Creative Wellbeing Programme, inspiring the next generation.

Don’t miss this chance to experience world-class opera right here in Llandudno. Join Welsh National Opera at Venue Cymru this autumn and be transported. n

The Welsh National Opera (WNO) is at Venue Cymru from October 9th - 11th. Tickets are available from venuecymru.co.uk

West Anglesey Exploring

Bethany Birch explores the dramatic coastline of West Anglesey, and discovers some rather dramatic scenery…

As the summer sun softens and rosy dawns stretch a little later, September on West Anglesey feels like a changing canvas – where sea, sky, and countryside blend seamlessly. It’s the perfect time and place to rediscover hidden coves, enjoy locally sourced treats, and breathe in the fresh, crisp air of early autumn. Personally, I don’t think there’s a better season to explore this beautiful part of North Wales. So, pack a thermos, grab a towel, and get out there to explore this charming Welsh island!

West Anglesey’s coastline is still dramatic and inviting, but the busy beaches like Aberffraw and Rhosneigr take on a quieter vibe as the summer crowds thin out. The gentle waves and still-warm sea make it a paradise for early paddlers and families, while surfers enjoy less crowded breaks. Close by, Borthwen and Traeth Lligwy reveal fascinating rock pools and tranquil inland lagoons, perfect for beachcombing, rockpooling, or a refreshing dip.

The Wales Coast Path here meanders along dunes and saltmarshes, and just inland, Newborough Forest beckons with lush trails beneath towering beech and oak. Wander through golden bracken to Llyn Maelog, where grey herons quietly stalk the shallows and dragonflies flit above the water. With the Mourne Mountains standing majestically across the water, it’s a scene straight out of a film.

Newborough Beach, arguably one of the finest in Wales, is especially magical in September. With the school holidays over, the vast golden sands stretch quiet and clean, framed by low tide pools and the distant silhouette of Snowdonia. Walkers can reach Ynys Llanddwyn, the tidal island dedicated to the Welsh patron saint of lovers, where whitewashed lighthouses and ancient ruins gaze out to sea.

Behind the beach, Newborough Forest offers peaceful trails winding through Corsican pines and a variety of broadleaf trees like birch, cherry, oak, and sycamore. This diverse woodland is home to wildlife too – red squirrels often dart through the autumn bracken, and occasional clearings open up stunning views back towards the sea and the neighbouring beach. Whether you’re after a contemplative wander or a family adventure, it’s a perfect spot.

Rhosneigr, just a 20-minute drive from Newborough, is a laid-back surf village known for its two expansive beaches

Near Holyhead, though technically on the northwest coast, South Stack Lighthouse is a dramatic must-see on any west-coast itinerary

– Traeth Crigyll and Traeth Llydan. These spots are great for paddleboarding, kitesurfing, or simply chilling out with a book. The village itself is a foodie’s delight, with independent cafés, ice cream parlours, and restaurants offering a warm welcome, and hearty local fare to warm you up.

Further south, the ancient village of Aberffraw sits beside the peaceful River Ffraw, opening onto a quiet sandy beach backed by dunes and wild heath. Once the royal seat of the princes of Gwynedd, Aberffraw carries a deep history but today feels like a peaceful retreat, perfect for long walks, shell collecting at low tide, or sketching the scenery. It’s the kind of place where time feels like it slows, and the sea air does the rest. For keen walkers, there’s a lovely 7-mile coastal path from Aberffraw to Rhosneigr, offering stunning views and plenty of birdwatching opportunities.

The west coast of Anglesey is quietly dotted with historic lighthouses, many of which have become icons of the landscape. Tŵr Mawr and Tŵr Bach, perched on Ynys Llanddwyn, are among the most beloved. Tŵr Mawr, which looks a bit like an old windmill, dates back to the 19th century and once helped guide ships safely through the Menai Strait, while its smaller neighbour, Tŵr Bach, possibly dates as far back as the 1600s.

Near Holyhead, though technically on the northwest coast, South Stack Lighthouse is a dramatic must-see on any westcoast itinerary. Built in 1809, this striking lighthouse stands on a rocky islet, reachable by descending 400 cliffside steps. It still flashes its warning light today, and the surrounding South Stack Cliffs RSPB reserve is home to choughs, puffins, and seasonal seabirds, it’s a birdwatcher’s paradise. September also brings a lively local flavour to Anglesey’s villages and markets. Along the A5 coastal strip, food producers offer heritage honey, handmade crab cakes, smoked trout, and seaweed-infused chutneys. Aberffraw’s beachside market is a particular highlight, and cafés in Rhosneigr, Abermawr, and Newborough serve up seafood

chowders, seasonal bakes, and warming pies. Keep an eye on local events and calendars for seasonal highlights like the BWA Rhosneigr Wave Classic windsurfing festival or the Ring O' Fire ultramarathon.

For me, September is hands-down one of the best months to explore West Anglesey. The changing autumn colours start to paint the landscape, and the slower pace after summer crowds fade is such a draw. The days are still long enough to enjoy leisurely walks, sea-gazing, and slow ambling through the glens. Temperatures stay mild, and local wildlife becomes more visible – seals haul out on secluded beaches while migrating birds fill the skies. As the sun sets over the Irish Sea, it burns with a deep golden fire, making September feel less like an afterthought to summer and more like a rich, golden chapter all its own. n

Help wildlife this September

It’s one small hop for you, one giant leap for wildlife. Take that leap — pledge a gift in your Will this September.

North Wales Wildlife Trust (NWWT) is the only charity in North Wales dedicated to the protection and restoration of our natural world for the benefit of people and wildlife – in our region and further afield. They rely upon the support of their members and volunteers to help them carry out this valuable work. But did you know a large proportion of NWWT’s income comes from the fabulous people who pledge a gift to wildlife in their Wills?

This month sees the return of Remember a Charity Week, when charities like NWWT reach out to their supporters to ask them to consider leaving a gift in their Will. No matter how small the percentage, a gift in your Will to NWWT makes an incredible difference. Gifts in Wills are an amazing gesture to the future and support the wildlife and wild spaces we love after we’ve gone, so they may be enjoyed and cherished by new generations.

“I know that I’ve been very fortunate in life, and consider it a privilege to know that my passing will one day leave a unique, local, living legacy,” – Anne, NWWT supporter

To those wonderful people who have pledged a gift to North Wales Wildlife Trust in their Will – thank you. Through your generosity, they have helped to protect nesting seabirds at Cemlyn Nature Reserve on Anglesey, improved the

environmental condition of Gors Maen Llwyd Nature Reserve near Denbigh, helped local children to make some amazing homes for bees and advised local schools and communities about wildlife gardening throughout North Wales. Supporters such as these have truly left their footprints in our local landscape forever. n

Take the leap –pledge a gift in your Will

Did you know you can write your Will with one of North Wales Wildlife Trust’s Will-writing partners this September for FREE with no obligation whatsoever?

In the Shadow of

Trees

The landscape of North Wales just wouldn’t be the same without our stunning trees. But, asks Sonia Goulding, did you realise that they had a story to tell too?

From the fresh green unfurling of spring to the crowded canopy of summer, the stained-glass glow of autumn leaves to the stark silhouettes of winter stems and branches, trees reshape the landscape with every passing season. They provide beauty, shade, and shelter, and hold memory, myth, and meaning.

In the woodlands of North Wales, two species are keepers of some of our oldest and most mysterious stories. One, the oak, is strong and broad-limbed. The other, the yew, is dark and enigmatic. Both are living witnesses to our shared human history.

The Mighty Oak

Known as the King of Trees, the oak supports more wildlife than any other British species. Symbolising strength, wisdom and endurance, oaks, together with the ash and thorn, formed a trinity believed by Druids to be portals into the spirit world. The superstition of touching wood for luck stems from the ancient belief that these trees housed protective spirits.

The Oak at the Gate of the Dead

Ultimately, the English were driven back, but not without bloody losses on both sides. The area became known as Adwy’r Beddau (The Pass of the Graves), and legend has it that the blood and bones of the fallen nourish the roots of the great tree to this day.

The Pontfadog Oak

Once considered Wales’ national tree, the Pontfadog Oak, in the Ceiriog Valley, was estimated to be between 1,200 and 1,600 years old when it was brought down by fierce gales in April 2013.

Until then, it was believed to have been one of the oldest and largest oak trees in the world, with a girth of 16m, or 52ft. Its hollow trunk was so vast that it is said that six men once sat around a table inside it, and a 19th Century story tells of a bull found safe and well inside the tree, after going missing for two days!

One of Britain’s oldest oaks stands on Offa’s Dyke, near Chirk Castle. Thought to be over 1,000 years old, it is named for the nearby burial site of those who fell in the 1165 Battle of Crogen. In this brutal encounter, an alliance of Welsh forces, led by Owain Gwynedd, clashed with the army of Henry II.

Though the storm took it down, the Pontfadog Oak lives on in a new form. Cloned saplings have been propagated, with one being planted in Windsor Great Park, Berkshire, and others entrusted to both National Trust Cymru and the National Botanic Gardens of Wales. In 2022, King Charles planted one of the Pontfadog saplings at Erddig, in Wrexham, in memory of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Where the oak stands tall and strong, and open to the sky, the yew bends and twists with the weight of time, its shadows deep, and its memory, deeper still…

The Venerable Yew

Often associated with churchyards, yews are extraordinarily long-lived. An oak is considered ancient once it reaches 400 years old, but a yew is only just beginning its story at 900. The Druids revered the yew for its association with death and rebirth, believing that darkness is the matrix from which light springs forth, and that out of death, life arises. Christians regarded the yew as a natural emblem of everlasting life because of the tree’s amazing ability to regenerate itself.

The Llangernyw Yew

Thought to be over 4,000 years old, the Llangernyw Yew is possibly the oldest living thing in Wales. It grows in the churchyard of St. Dygain’s, in the county borough of Conwy, and is linked to a chilling local legend, that of the Angelystor, or Recording Angel. This apparition is said to appear in the church twice each year, on 31st July and again at Hallowe’en, to announce the names of those in the parish soon to die.

A tale tells of a local tailor, Siôn ap Robert, who, one Hallowe’en, mocked the legend whilst drinking in one of the village pubs. Taking up a dare to go to the church, off he went, full of swagger and bluster, only to hear his own name called out by an otherworldly voice. “Hold, hold!” he cried, “I am not yet ready!”. But poor Siôn ap Robert died before the year was out.

The Pulpit Yew

In the churchyard of St James’ in Nantglyn, Denbighshire, stands the Pulpit Yew, believed to be around 1500 years old. Slate steps were added inside the tree, possibly in the 18th Century, to create an outdoor preaching pulpit, reportedly once used by John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church. It was shortlisted for the Woodland Trust’s Tree of the Year competition in 2017, though it eventually lost out to another Welsh contender, The Hollow Tree, in Port Talbot.

The Yew Trees of Overton-on-Dee

The churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, overlooking Overton-onDee’s high street, is home to twenty-one ancient yews. These trees are traditionally counted among the Seven Wonders of Wales, and are commemorated in a well-known rhyme:

Pistyll Rhaeadr and Wrexham steeple, Snowdon’s mountain without its people, Overton yew trees, St Winefride wells, Llangollen bridge, and Gresford bells.

The oldest of the Overton yews is estimated to be between 1,500 and 2,000 years old, predating the church itself, which is thought to have been founded in the late 13th Century. 1992 marked the 700th anniversary of the Royal Charter granted to Overton by Edward I. To commemorate the occasion, Queen Elizabeth II visited the village and planted a new yew tree in the churchyard, adding to the historic legacy of this sacred site.

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods…”

The oaks and yews of North Wales are part of the living landscape, woven into the history, culture, and folklore of the region. From sheltering wildlife to witnessing centuries of human activity, they stand, quietly marking time.

They remind us that nature is not separate from our lives but deeply entwined, with secrets and stories waiting in even the quietest, sleepiest corners of the countryside. n

Playing it safe

Explore North Wales safely this September…

Whether you plan to take a gentle stroll on the coast path, dip your toes in the water, or tackle something more strenuous like bagging some summits, a few wild swims or a spot of paddleboarding, you will need to plan for your day’s activity. The weather can change quickly…. so take the time to understand the WEATHER forecast and plan for all conditions; pack the right GEAR and brush up on SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE that you may not have used for a while. Here’s AdventureSmart’s guide to enjoying the inspiring landscapes of North Wales in September.

Keep on Track

Even in good weather, it’s important to know where you are and where you’re going. Getting lost isn’t fun, so know how to use an App and a paper map to plot your progress along your chosen path. Follow our simple guide to Keeping on Track (www.adventuresmart.uk/keep-on-track/)

Watch the Weather

The Met Office is a good place to start. Winds and heavy rain can be raging at the summit when it is merely cloudy and breezy, or even sunny in the valleys, so check conditions for different points on your route, and don’t underestimate how chilling the wind can be. If you run into low cloud resulting in poor visibility, it’s best to carefully retrace your steps back

along the path. Checking the weather forecast before you set off is just as important if you are heading out for a day on the water. Heavy rainfall can change river patterns and levels dramatically, so it’s always worth checking the flow and levels. Strong winds will affect the sea swell along the coast and shoreline, and can make conditions on inland lakes tricky.

The right gear’s a good idea

You don’t need expensive high-tech kit, but pack plenty of warm layers and waterproofs in the bottom of your rucksack. A blister can ruin a lovely day’s walking, so make sure you wear well-fitting, robust walking boots/shoes. Snacks, water, a charged mobile phone and a torch are always a good idea, but especially as the September nights draw in. Don’t even contemplate paddleboarding without wearing a leash and a buoyancy aid; unless you have the balance skills of an Olympic gymnast, you are likely to end up in the water.

Whether you plan to explore on foot, bike, kayak or paddleboard, North Wales will not disappoint if you take the time to prepare for your day. However, accidents can happen even to the most adventure smart, so make sure you know what to do in an emergency with this guide to calling for help (https://www.adventuresmart.uk/know-how-and-when-toget-help/). n

Lynn Beanland has used her personal journey as inspiration to help other women…

Based in North Wales, wellbeing coach Lynn Beanland aims to help women feel their absolute best despite whatever adversity they might be facing. Having had quite the journey to get to this point, Lynn is well placed to help both menopausal women and couples that have suffered the heartbreak of miscarriage.

Lynn has a background in skincare, but she was inspired to specialise in holistic wellbeing and natural fertility after her own struggle conceiving.

“When I was about 28 we started trying for a baby,” explains Lynn who has been married to Martin for 36 years. “Years went by and still nothing happened, but all tests showed no reason why we couldn’t conceive apart from my age. But I vowed that as long as I had a womb, I would get my baby. “I then researched absolutely every possible explanation for reason and ways,” she continues. “I then studied and received a distinction in women’s health and became a fertility coach. I put all my hard work into practice and, eventually, after my 40th birthday I found out I was pregnant with a beautiful little boy.”

However after the birth of her son Lynn was really feeling down. “Being an older parent I really wanted our son to have a sibling, and when he was nine months old I found out I was pregnant with twins, but our joy turned into heartbreak at an early scan, to be told there was no more heartbeats. I went on to get pregnant again but

unfortunately I suffered a further seven miscarriages.”

Such personal loss enabled Lynn to fully support other couples on their fertility journey, either through natural conception or IVF. She also offered support for baby loss. “I personally had no support from the hospitals, apart from go home and take paracetamol and wait to pass them,” remembers Lynn. “So I carried on supporting others that were going through the same, even though I just wanted to stay in bed and cry.”

But Lynn’s story was far from over. “When I was 52 with IVF I found out that I was pregnant again, and in March 2025 I gave birth to another beautiful, amazing little boy.”

Becoming a mum again later in life inspired Lynn once again, and she undertook more training to become a wellbeing and menopause coach.

“The change of life can cause overwhelming and exhausting challenges to both home and work life. I offer support on a one-to-one basis as well as to groups, and in the workplace. The Rebirth Garden has now been born, the meaning behind ‘rebirth is that life is a continuous journey of transformations, it’s about shedding old layers and embracing new beginnings,” concludes Lynn. “Shedding old layers also relates to skin of course, and as a skin therapist too I offer different facial treatments, and Lymphatic drainage body massage.”n To

Exam success for St David’s College pupils

Students at St David’s College are celebrating a wonderful raft of A-Level and BTEC results, reflecting their hard work, resilience, and commitment to excellence.

This year’s A-Level results saw 24.2% of students achieving A to A grades*, with 63.6% securing grades A to C*. Meanwhile, our BTEC students also shone brightly, with 44.1% achieving Distinction or Distinction*, and 74.6% attaining grades from Distinction to Merit*.

Among the standout subjects, Biology A-Level was a particular highlight, with three students achieving a remarkable 3 A grades*. Other notable successes came from Art, Business and Entrepreneurship, and Sports BTEC, where students consistently achieved excellent outcomes.

Headmaster Mr Andy Russell praised the students’ efforts, saying: “I am immensely proud of our A-Level students at St David’s College, whose outstanding results and exemplary character reflect their hard work, resilience, and the values that will guide them to make a positive difference in the world.”

These results not only reflect academic achievement but also

the supportive, values-led environment that St David’s College fosters in preparing students for life beyond the classroom.

Among this year’s outstanding achievers is Thomas Pearce, who is heading to Cardiff University to study Medicine after securing an A* in Biology and A grades in Chemistry and Physics. Last year, Thomas was awarded the prestigious Lexden Prize for the most outstanding Sixth Form student, triumphing over competitors from across the UK.

Meanwhile Thomas Barclay, who achieved an impressive three A*s in the Sciences, is off to study Chemistry and Issy Peevor, who also earned three A*s, is set to study Medicine after taking a year out.

“To all of our leavers, we wish you all the very best at whatever career path you will chose,” added Mr Russell. “Remember we will always be here for you.” n

Rydal Penrhos School smashes national averages as A-Level results released

Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay is celebrating another excellent year of A-Level results, with pupils securing places at some of the UK’s most prestigious universities.

Among the highest achievers was Liam Farrell, who has spent all his school career at Rydal Penrhos. Liam achieved a remarkable 4 A* grades, including the rare distinction of full UMS in Further Mathematics – one of the most challenging A-Levels available. He will now study Mathematics at Durham University.

Liam’s fellow Deputy Head of School, James Gilman, earned three A grades and will go on to study Accounting and Finance at the University of Exeter. Philo Rozek attained 3 A*s and a B, and will read Molecular Bioengineering at Imperial College London. Harrison McKinnel earned an excellent A*, 2 As, while Head of School, Ella Northcott, achieved an A*, 2 As and a B, securing her place to study Biological Sciences at the University of Liverpool.

This year, several subjects including Geography and Spanish achieved perfect 100% A*s across the Board. Meanwhile, in core subjects including English Literature, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, over half of all grades awarded were A* or A. These results follow an outstanding Estyn inspection report earlier this year.

“I could not be prouder of our pupils for the achievements we are celebrating today,” said Principal Tom Hutchinson. “These results are the culmination of years of hard work, commitment, and the highest standards of teaching and support. They show what can be achieved when young people are inspired, encouraged, and challenged to be their best.

“Whether heading to a top university, taking a gap year, or pursuing other ambitions, our pupils leave Rydal Penrhos ready to thrive in the next stage of their lives. I would like to thank our outstanding teaching staff, as well as the parents and carers who have supported them every step of the way.” n

J 20% of grades at Rydal Penrhos were the highest possible A* grade, double the Welsh national average (10.4%)

J 45% of grades were A* to A, significantly outperforming national averages (29.5% in Wales, 28.3% in the UK)

J 83% of grades were A* to C (national averages were 77.2% in Wales, and 77.9% in the UK)

Frankly, a world without cheese is unthinkable. In the same way that the smell of bacon is the downfall of many fairweather vegetarian good intentions, so the existence of cheese is the specific reason why a classic six-pack abdomen continues to elude me. Given the choice of a cheese platter or a torso like Ryan Gosling, I’d reach for the water biscuits every time.

Food for thought

It doesn’t help that Wales is such a hot-bed of excellent cheese-makers, and North Wales especially. It isn’t surprising though, given all the wonderful farmland up here, scattered with cows, sheep and goats. We’re pretty spoiled with cheese shops too and one of the very best is ‘& Caws’ in Menai Bridge.

I chatted to the splendid Ed Biillins, who runs this excellent cheesemongers, which also doubles as a café and delicatessen. “I managed La Fromagerie in London for over 10 years,” explained Ed. “We opened ‘& Caws’ about three and a half years ago. My wife Elen is from Anglesey. We lived in London for a long time but eventually she managed to get me up here.

“We’re very blessed here, there are some great cheesemakers which makes it pretty easy to stock.”

Perhaps the most famous North Wales cheeses these days are the iconic colourful range of Snowdonia cheeses, whose Black Bombers and Red Devils have been cheese platter staples for years.

100g walnut halves Small handful of mint leaves

150g soft goat’s cheese Black pepper. Runny honey

Lightly bake the walnuts for about ten minutes, then finely chop them or give them a bash in a pestle and mortar. Finely chop the mint leaves.

Employing all of your artistic skills, carefully scatter the chopped walnuts onto a plate, crumb or slice the goat’s cheese on top, season with some black pepper, twirls some runny honey over the cheese, then sprinkle some chopped mint over everything. Et voila!

Pressed to namecheck a few more, Ed gave me a selection of local cheeses to try out. “The three most popular are probably Brefu Bach, which means ‘little bleat,’ and is a ewe's milk cheese made by Carrie Rimes from Cosyn Cymru in Bethesda. Then from the same dairy, a young lad called Brad makes a French, crottin-style goat’s cheese called Yr Afr. He’s done amazingly well with that. In the couple of years that he’s been making it, it’s already started selling to very well renowned wholesalers like Neal’s Yard in London.

Third would probably be Mon Las, the Anglesey blue which is a really lovely buttery blue cheese made right here on the island.”

There is something especially pleasing about bypassing the supermarket shelves and heading to a proper cheesemongers to get your hands on some lovingly, patiently created cheeses, and there are some great ones in North Wales. Porter’s Delicatessen in Llangollen is excellent as is The Cheese Room in Conwy, while The Grate Cheese Deli in Colwyn Bay wins extra points for the name.

This recipe is a steal from a restaurant I went to years ago in Narbonne, France: a simple four-ingredient starter and an outstanding flavour combination. Head to ‘& Caws’ to get some Yr Afr goat’s cheese for this, and if you want some local honey, take a trip to Conwy on the 13th of September for the annual Honey Fair and treat yourself to something sweet. n

Wales’ Vibrant Food and Drink Scene

Wales may be best known for its stunning natural landscapes, impressive castles, love of rugby, distinctive language and, in recent years, Wrexham AFC (with a little help from their Hollywood owners), but did you know the Welsh food scene is vibrant and growing with a strong emphasis on local and fresh produce!

Don’t just take our word for it, the proof is in the pudding, or Welsh Cake in this case, as award-winning companies take their place at this year’s Mold Food & Drink Festival (20th –21st September) to highlight their mouth-watering products.

From award-winning cheeses and gourmet pies to small-batch spirits and handcrafted sweet treats.

This year, the Mold Food & Drink Festival celebrates its 19th year and continues to be one of North Wales most anticipated events, showcasing food and drink from across Wales and beyond. Attracting visitors from near and far in their thousands, with something to tempt every tastebud, it’s an event you don’t want to miss.

Alongside some of the best Welsh food and drink businesses, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase Welsh Luing Beef. Supplied by Welsh Luing Beef, their produce is amongst the most sustainable beef in the world, born and reared on their hill farm in the Hiraethog mountains, North Wales. You can’t get more local and fresher than that!

To wash down the glorious food you’ve picked up, they’ll also be a selection of award-winning Welsh spirits, beers and liqueurs. From the Clwydian Range Distillery nestled in the valleys of Halkyn Mountain, to the Celtic Artisan Spirits produced on Anglesey and more locally to Mold itself, there’ll

be the teams from Hafod Brewing Company and Polly’s Brew Co., to name a few.

And as Mold is lucky to have not one but two Welsh breweries within its charming historic town, it only seems right to find out more…

Hafod Brewing Company is a family-run brewery in Mold that utilises modern Welsh brewing techniques alongside ingredients from the region, to celebrate the hidden gems of North East Wales. Producing an array of beautifully balanced beers that will leave you wanting more. From their humble beginnings in 2001, brewing one barrel at a time, to their current headquarters where they now produce 17 barrels. And… they’re not stopping there as they aim to continue working with local producers to highlight the region’s amazing ingredients and look to expand their bottle range further to include even more great beer styles.

In more recent year’s Polly’s Brew Co. also started brewing in Mold, setting up in 2018, where their original plan was to brew once and never again. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. And to this day, they still have a range which maintains elements of this, and with their special releases only being short, limited runs, you have to be quick before they sell out. As their reputation grew, so did their beers, and their core range is a great introduction for the curious new craft beer drinker or the beer drinker looking for something new to fill their fridge. So, if this has your tastebuds tingling and mouthwatering, make sure you place the dates in your diary for this year’s not-to-be-missed Mold Food & Drink Festival taking place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September. n

Tickets for the Mold Food & Drink Festival are available from www.moldfoodfestival.co.uk

Raise your Glass

Nyetimber Blanc de Blancs, English Sparkling Wine, England 2016 £48.00

This incredible fizz from the South Downs has a richness and complexity from nearly six years on lees (the dead yeast cells from fermentation), that is balanced with fresh, lemony acidity. This is my go-to bottle of fizz at the moment, and is perfect with any seafood, but particularly good with some Conwy mussels.

Chablis, Vielles Vignes, Daniel-Etienne

Defaix, Burgundy, France 2020

£29.95

Defaix’s wines are slightly atypical of your usual lean, steely Chablis. These have no oak used at all, but have a depth and richness to them from extended time on the lees that give unrivalled length and complexity. It’s a winner with some roast John Dory, or any mushroom dishes.

Baboon Rock Unwooded Chardonnay, Franschhoek, La Petite Ferme, South Africa 2024 £15.20

This unoaked Chardonnay is made in a very modern style, all stainless steel and freshness. Honey and limey citrus flavours, with a gently creamy texture to balance out the acidity. Great on its own, or with some grilled chicken, this is a big staff favourite at Tanners!

Chardonnay is pretty much my favourite white grape variety, but I wish I had a pound for every time I hear those fateful words “I don’t like Chardonnay”. Now I can concur that some people just don’t like it, in the same way I’m not enamoured with every single grape variety in the world, but it offers so much diversity, complexity, refinement, longevity and sheer drinkability. If you belong to the ‘ABC – Anything But Chardonnay’ Club, it’s time to revoke your membership.

It’s about the only grape variety that can grow in every grape-growing country in the world, and because of this, where it grows can have a huge impact on the style of wine you get. Think crisp, cool, Chablis; juicy, tropical fruity Aussie Chard or even a classy Blanc de Blancs Champagne. These are all entirely made from Chardonnay, and no, they don’t all contain oak!

Margan Chardonnay, Hunter Valley, Australia 2024 £15.95

You might think Aussie Chardonnay is all unsubtle oak and flavours of cream soda, but this elegant example from Andrew Margan will make you change your mind. Crisp acidity balances out a touch of creamy, oaky vanilla and ripe melon and peach. Very stylish.

Greenhough ‘Road Block’ Chardonnay, Nelson, New Zealand 2020 £19.70

From the north-west of the South Island of NZ comes this great example of how to use oak well. Wild yeast fermented, then matured in oak barrels only a small proportion of which are new. This gives a beautifully silky texture and depth of complexity, while keeping balance and freshness.

Principe de Viana Vendimia Tardia, Late Harvest Chardonnay, Navarra, Spain 2019 £15.95 (50cl)

Just to show how versatile a grape Chardonnay is, here comes a dessert wine! This wine isn’t too sweet, but is lip-smackingly luscious and has delicious flavours of vanilla, barley sugar and ripe figs. It works very well with orangey desserts.

Renewable energy systems for your home

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.

Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.

Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.

A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.

The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.

If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.

Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n

For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

SPECIAL TRAINING HELPING PROFESSIONALS DEAL WITH THE “EMOTIONAL TOLL” OF OTHER PEOPLE’S TRAUMA

Professionals helping people who have been through traumatic events, such as a serious injury or the loss of a loved one, need support to ensure they can take care of themselves as well as their clients.

North Wales law firm Lanyon Bowdler is providing staff with special training to help them deal with the “vicarious trauma” of dealing with personal injury and clinical negligence cases.

Vicarious trauma is the term given to taking on the emotional stress of another person – a common issue for lawyers working with people in the aftermath of serious incidents.

Debbie Brooks, Lanyon Bowdler’s HR manager, said it was vital to give staff the support they need to maintain their wellbeing at work.

“We spend a lot of time and effort supporting our staff here at Lanyon Bowdler,” she said. “It may not always be obvious, but working with clients who have suffered serious injuries or experienced tragedy can bring significant emotional stress to the lawyers involved.

“We now provide vicarious trauma training, delivered by professionals who support people working on helplines, to enable our staff to firstly recognise the emotional strain they

might be under and how to manage it. Without the necessary support, people can end up burning out which is clearly not good for them, the firm or their clients.

“I would urge more law firms and those working directly with people who have suffered trauma to take the issue seriously and do what they can to support their staff.”

Christian Murphy, of the Helplines Partnership, who is delivering the training to Lanyon Bowdler staff, said the aim was to help people recognise and cope with the indirect emotional impact of others’ trauma.

He added: “By understanding vicarious trauma, team members can develop healthier ways to manage the emotional toll of their work, leading to better overall well-being and preventing burnout.

“The training sessions aim to enhance resilience and sustainable practice, ensuring that the team can continue providing high-quality support to those in need without compromising their own mental health.” n

Lanyon Bowdler is a full-service law firm providing legal assistance to individuals and businesses across North Wales from its office in Conwy. For more information visit the website at www.lblaw.co.uk or call 01492 557070

Breaking the Barrier of Fear

Conscious Sedation at West End Dental

For many, the thought of sitting in a dentist’s chair can spark feelings of dread. Hidden behind polite smiles, dental phobia is real – and it can prevent individuals from receiving essential oral care.

In North Wales, West End Dental (with clinics in Colwyn Bay, Llangefni, Porthmadog and Prestatyn) is redefining dental visits for anxious individuals through its compassionate approach and, when needed, conscious intravenous sedation, led by its expert Sedation Lead, Dr Stephan Clements.

Understanding the Challenge: Dental Anxiety in Context

Anxiety around dental treatment isn’t uncommon. For those with heightened nervousness or full-blown dental phobia, routine check-ups can feel unbearable. Yet postponing care can escalate into more serious oral health problems, compounding fear with pain.

Conscious sedation exists as a bridge; under conscious sedation, patients remain awake and responsive, yet deeply relaxed. They often remember little of the treatment, experiencing minimal discomfort with an approach endorsed across dental and medical communities for its safety and efficacy.

A Gentle Option: What West End Dental Provides

At West End Dental, nervous patients are not merely tolerated, they are supported. Their approach blends reassurance and clear communication, to create a comfortable experience, all without rushing.

For those whose anxiety persists, the practice offers intravenous (IV) conscious sedation, performed either by consultant anaesthetists or senior dental surgeons specially trained in the technique.

And central to this service is the team's Sedation Lead: Dr Stephan Clements. A Consultant in Anaesthesia and PreHospital Emergency Medicine, as well as a flying doctor with the Welsh Air Ambulance (EMRTS), Dr Clements brings exceptional expertise and a calm presence that reassures even the most anxious patients. His clinical qualifications enable delivery of an advanced range of sedation techniques often unavailable in a typical dental setting.

Why Conscious Sedation Works

Conscious sedation tackles anxiety at its core. Patients enter a relaxed state that reduces discomfort and often memory of the procedure but remain able to follow instructions. West End Dental’s approach ensures successful outcomes as follows: Personalised drug selection: The specific sedatives

and reversal agents used are chosen based on each patient’s health and circumstances, ensuring maximum safety and individual comfort.

Skilled delivery: The involvement of highly qualified professionals ensures rigorous oversight and responsive care.

Comfort and confidentiality: Our team’s wider medical experience, ensures a sense of confidence and calm.

A Patient-Centred Ethos

Beyond sedation itself, West End Dental cultivates an atmosphere of ease:

Complimentary, relaxed consultations set the tone. Patients are listened to, understood, and their treatment plans are discussed at length, at a pace that suits them.

The clinics’ compassionate staff and modern, relaxed environment help dissolve initial anxiety. Many patients remark on how welcomed and at ease they feel from the moment they arrive.

Ongoing care, flexible payment options, and treatment across a range of needs, including general, cosmetic, implants and emergency treatments, ensure that sedation is part of a broader, supportive care journey.

Local Expertise, Lasting Smiles

Choosing an Unattended Funeral Locally

Not everyone wants a grand send-off. For some, a simple, quiet farewell feels more fitting – no limousines, no speeches, just dignity and respect.

What is an Unattended Funeral?

An unattended cremation is a cremation without a formal service at the crematorium.

What many people in our area don’t know is that, we offer this service locally for £1,659 (as of August 2025) with everything included, no hidden extras. We always tell you the date and time, so you can follow in your own car, pause for a moment outside, or even help carry the coffin if you wish.

The Evans Family’s Experience

Earlier this year, the Evans family from Colwyn Bay arranged an unattended funeral for their father, Brian. Brian had always said he didn’t want “a fuss” when his time came. “Just cremate me and get on with it,” he’d joke over Sunday lunch. His family wanted to honour his wishes but they didn’t feel right trusting the process to a faceless online company.

“We looked at online companies, but Dad could have been taken miles away and his ashes sent by post. That didn’t feel right,” says Brian’s daughter, Emma. “With Tom Owen and Son, we knew he was cared for locally and could spend time with him before the cremation.”

Why Choose Local?

National providers can appear cheaper, but it’s worth knowing:

J Collection may take days or weeks.

J Cremation can be anywhere in the country, with no details of location, date or time given.

J Scattering of ashes in the Colwyn Bay Crematorium Remembrance Garden will incur a charge (£215 ) as not the original crematorium.

J Ashes often returned by courier, with extra costs.

J You rarely speak to the same person twice.

Choosing a local funeral director means:

J Your loved one stays close by.

J You know exactly when and where the cremation happens.

J The same team looks after both your loved one and you.

IN THE

STARS...

September horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant

ARIES (March 21st – April 20th)

A sedentary routine is draining your spark. Shake things up with a daily walk, a swim, or even a bit of dancing in the kitchen – anything to get your body moving. This isn’t just about fitness, it’s about rekindling your creativity and wellbeing. If you’ve felt sluggish or blocked, physical movement could be the missing piece. And don’t forget to make time for whatever feeds your soul – music, painting, or just a moment of stillness in nature.

TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st)

Creativity takes centre stage this month. Whether you’re dabbling in arts and crafts or daydreaming about starting your own business, your imagination is in fine form. What begins as a hobby could become something more significant, especially around mid-month. Don’t rush it – follow what feels joyful. A little indulgence, like booking a pampering spa break or a peaceful escape, will do you the world of good.

GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st)

There’s a strong sense of clarity in the air as September gets underway. Instead of charging ahead, take time to weigh up your options and really listen to those around you. Family chats and thoughtful exchanges can bring surprising insights. Decisions made from a well-rounded perspective will prove the most rewarding. This month, patience and good communication are your secret weapons.

CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd)

You’re itching to dive into something new, but before you chase adventure, there are practical matters to handle. Those admin jobs, forms or forgotten deadlines need attention. It’s not glamorous, but getting them sorted will set you free later. Use this time to brush up on skills or gain a qualification – it’ll pay off. And remember, small steps now can lead to big doors opening down the line.

LEO (July 24th – August 23rd)

If you’ve been feeling a bit off-kilter, turn your attention to your wellbeing. A fresh fitness routine could be just what you need to clear your head. Money-making ideas are also buzzing about – take note of the ones linked to your passions. What starts as a scribble in a notebook could turn into something lucrative. As the month wraps up, a family talk brings comfort and renewed understanding.

VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd)

It’s your time to shine, but not in the way people might expect. Your urge to help others is strong, yet this month, you’re being nudged to prioritise yourself. Recharge with creative hobbies, time in nature, or a home makeover that soothes your soul. Mid-month is ideal for sorting important paperwork or laying foundations for future plans. You thrive in calm, beautiful surroundings – make space for both.

Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com

LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd)

You’re craving harmony, and this month brings plenty of chances to nurture your closest relationships. Even if life’s been hectic, a heartfelt message or a spontaneous gesture of affection can work wonders. Make time for what matters and create boundaries between work and home life. Around the 22nd, an uplifting note from someone special will remind you that love is always close at hand.

SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd)

A sense of unease may linger as summer fades and autumn approaches. Try not to let it throw you – this seasonal shift is simply stirring your instincts to prepare and plan. By mid-month, your focus sharpens and decisions feel easier to make. Organisation is your superpower now, especially when a major choice lands around the 25th. Keep this one to yourself for now – it’s not ready to be shared just yet.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st)

September offers fresh opportunities and a few behind-the-scenes hiccups. Stay on top of your workload by double-checking details and keeping lines of communication open with colleagues. A simple act of kindness could land you an invite to a sparkling social do – so don your glad rags and say yes. Looking your best will boost your confidence more than you expect.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th)

The travel bug bites, but your wallet may be saying otherwise. If a real getaway isn’t on the cards, bring the world to your doorstep. Try cooking something exotic, watching foreign films, or planning for future adventures. It’ll lift your spirits and scratch that itch for something new. Even if your feet stay firmly planted, your imagination is free to roam.

AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th)

A financial windfall – perhaps an overdue payout or settlement – brings a sigh of relief. Keep it under wraps or you might attract attention from someone with sticky fingers and shallow pockets. This is a good time to play the long game with money – think savings or investments. If someone in authority offers advice that feels off, trust your own judgement. And if you’ve been longing for a spiritual escape, start mapping it out.

PISCES (February 20th – March 20th)

You’re feeling more focused than usual and ready to tackle your to-do list with fresh resolve. A tidy workspace, a clear plan, and a bit of structure will do wonders for your peace of mind. You may feel like you’re doing most of the heavy lifting in a shared task – don’t be afraid to call in a favour. By month’s end, a change of scene, even a local one, will do your heart good.
