Page 1

DEAR READER

Well, it’s the month we’ve all been waiting for – welcome to March! As the days get longer, and the sun starts to become a regular part of your day, there is no better time to explore the beautiful region that is North Wales…

And there’s lots going on too. Have a look at our What’s On? guide on page 7 to see some of the best events that are taking place this month. We also have plenty of inspiration for family days out on page 45, so make sure that you give that a read prior to the Easter holidays!

And, if you fancied having a little staycation, then turn to page 49 for our Spring Breaks feature. We tend to think of places further afield when we are planning a weekend away, but the nature of the beast means that, in reality, we don’t want to be wasting our precious time travelling. So have your next mini break

right here in North Wales – I guarantee that there is a corner or two that you haven’t explored yet…

Finally, when you do collapse on the sofa after all of that exploring, take a minute to read about the women who have been brave enough to start up in business right here in North Wales. The section has been put together to help celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th – and it has been incredibly inspiring to put together.

For an enjoyable day out on Anglesey consider a visit to the Holyhead Breakwater Country Park. Located next to the town of Holyhead, the park captures the scenic beauty, history and natural appeal of Anglesey. The Holyhead Breakwater Country Park was opened in 1990, and is situated on the site of an old quarry which supplied stone for the Holyhead Breakwater, which was built between 1846 and 1873. Today, part of the park can be found within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which provides bracing walks with breathtaking views.

A haunting performance

2:22 A Ghost Story comes to Llandudno next month. Are you brave enough to watch it?

After seven West End seasons, a record-breaking UK and Ireland tour and more than 30 productions worldwide, the stage sensation 2:22 A Ghost Story arrives at Venue Cymru from 27th April to 2nd May 2026

Winner of Best New Play at the WhatsOnStage Awards, this gripping supernatural thriller has kept audiences on the edge of their seats night after night. Blending sharp humour with nerve-shredding suspense, it promises an adrenalinefilled evening where secrets unravel and nothing is quite as it seems.

The 2026 tour stars James Bye (EastEnders), Natalie Casey (Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps), Shvorne Marks (Three Little Birds) and Grant Kilburn as Ben. The play is written by Danny Robins, creator of the hit BBC podcasts Uncanny and The Battersea Poltergeist.

Jenny believes her new home is haunted. Her husband Sam is sceptical. But when dinner guests Lauren and Ben agree to stay up until 2:22am – the time strange noises echo through the house – belief and doubt collide. As the clock ticks down, the question remains: what do you believe? n

Barmouth Exploring

Bethany Birch visits Barmouth, and discovers a vibrant seaside town that boasts some rather incredible views...

Barmouth, a town a lot of us are likely familiar with, and for good reason. It brims with the kind of seaside nostalgia and charm that arrives in generous, sandy handfuls. Donkey rides and bumper cars, Mr Whippy ice creams piled high with flake, sauce and sprinkles, sandcastles, sand dunes and sandals. It’s stripey parasols and sticky suncream. But Barmouth is no one-trick wonder; it is layered, textured, and all the better for it.

Growing up regularly holidaying in Tywyn, Barmouth was a place frequently visited during my childhood – and still to this day. It carries that particular kind of fondness reserved for school-break memories: sunny, effervescent, timeless.

A personal favourite way to spend the day in this area is to park at Morfa Mawddach, and enjoy the walk from the train station into the heart of Barmouth town. It’s a gentle route leading across the Mawddach trail, crossing the iconic wooden railway bridge into town, until pavements replace planks for the last stretch of the walk. With every footstep you’re guaranteed stunning views across the estuary and beyond.

Brunch (or lunch, depending on how leisurely the morning has been) is non-negotiable. After all, you’ve earned it. The town is populated with plenty of brilliant eateries to suit your companions’ preferences or appetites. The afternoon then lends itself beautifully to browsing Barmouth’s array of shops, from independent interior stores and tiny boutiques tucked into cottage-like premises, to gift shops hidden down cobbled

alleys. It’s the sort of place where you rarely leave emptyhanded.

And then, of course, there’s ice cream. Weather notwithstanding. A traditional wafer cone beside the sea feels almost ceremonial. Though you’ll need to keep a watchful eye on the seagulls, who are bold and entirely unbothered by etiquette.

An hour or two on the beach is essential. Sit among the dunes, wander the shoreline, or perch along the stone wall edging the promenade, legs dangling, ice cream in hand. Few pastimes rival simple people-watching whether that be in summer sunshine or beneath a moody winter sky. Colder months call

for coats and perhaps the shelter of a nearby coffee shop, but when the weather plays along, the harbour and beachfront provide front-row seats to the musings of the day.

The beach itself (Abermaw) is a wide, west-facing sweep stretching for roughly two miles. It offers space even at the height of summer. The promenade runs alongside for around a mile, perfect for strolling off fish and chips while scouting your ideal patch of sand. For a quieter stretch, wander further from the harbour and let the crowds thin behind you. Time it right and you might catch the sun sinking into Cardigan Bay. Yet Barmouth’s beauty extends far beyond its shoreline. Here, the coast and mountains sit comfortably side by side. The vast Mawddach Estuary flows gently out to sea, its tidal waters reflecting sky and summit alike. It’s a haven for birdlife, waders picking along the mudflats, and, if you’re lucky, you

What makes Barmouth endure is this balance. It is donkey rides and dunes, fish and chips and formidable peaks.

may even glimpse an otter along its banks.

Above the town, the much-loved Panorama Walk climbs steeply but generously rewards the effort with sweeping views across estuary and coastline. Nearby, the gorse-clad slopes of Dinas Oleu, a site cared for by the National Trust, provide quieter trails and elevated perspectives. To the north, the sand dune systems at Morfa Dyffryn National Nature Reserve offer a wilder landscape of shifting sands, salt marsh and coastal wildlife.

Barmouth also sits on the edge of Eryri National Park, placing rugged mountain adventures within easy reach. Hikers can venture towards the commanding presence of Cadair Idris for a more challenging ascent, or explore woodland paths such as those through Coed Glan-y-Mawddach. Long-distance walkers may follow sections of the Mawddach Way, looping through a landscape that shifts seamlessly from estuary to hillside. For the climbers amongst us, harness up and scale the crag known as the Barmouth Slabs for a local climb rewarded with impressive views.

Few seaside towns sit where Barmouth does – cradled between the Mawddach Estuary and the mountains of Eryri National Park. That immediate collision of coast and peak gives it a paradoxical mix of drama and peace. You can eat an ice cream on the promenade in the morning and stand on a mountain ridge by the afternoon. That’s not ordinary, even if it feels effortlessly so. Perhaps what Barmouth is, in the best way, is familiar. Accessible. Honest. It doesn’t shout. It simply offers what it has always offered and lets that be enough.

What makes Barmouth endure is this balance. It is donkey rides and dunes, fish and chips and formidable peaks. It allows you to combine a traditional beach holiday with mountainous adventure – all within a matter of minutes. n

A dedicated private cinema room provides the perfect setting for film nights, while the games room offers space for friendly competition across generations. These features make the house as enjoyable on cooler days and evenings as it is during long summer afternoons on the beach.

With generous indoor spaces, entertainment rooms and sea views whatever the weather, The Belmont is perfectly suited to off-season escapes as well as summer gatherings.

Known for its warm welcome and memorable shared stays, The Belmont Barmouth offers more than just accommodation. It provides a place to reconnect, celebrate and create lasting memories by the sea. n

Driving lessons can be inspiring!

Writers can find inspiration for their stories in some unusual situations. Dorset-based writer Gerald Killingworth came up with the first ideas for the plot of his latest novel, Under Druids’ Hill, while on an intensive driving course in Cemaes Bay on the north coast of Anglesey quite a few years ago.

“Soon after I arrived on Anglesey the idea popped into my head of an unhappy eight-year-old boy who has been sent to stay on the island while his parents bicker over their divorce,” he explains. “Perhaps I spent too much time thinking of how the plot might develop, because I failed the subsequent driving test. However, the compensation was that I came away from Cemaes Bay with notes for the novel’s setting and even a list of the Welsh names of the boats in the harbour to use as local colour. I produced a number of drafts of the novel over the years and finally have one I am happy to publish. You will be pleased to know that I did eventually pass my driving test.

“Of course I couldn’t leave Michael, the little boy, on his own, so I gave him a special friend, a nine-year-old girl called Olwen who takes him under her wing. She is the local golden child and she makes Michael’s stay on the island idyllic. 25 years later, the adult Michael returns with his wife and daughter in order to find Olwen again. He revisits his old haunts and, in particular, the hill where he and Olwen often played and where the Druids were believed to have made a last stand against the Romans. Instead of a heart-warming reunion, Michael makes a shattering discovery which

leaves him with a mystery to solve. I loved describing the relationships between the children as it provided me with opportunities for comedy which the darker aspects of the adult narrative did not.”

Gerald grew up in the former county of Huntingdonshire and studied English at Cambridge. He became an English teacher, a career which included four very interesting years in Athens where he acquired a taste for Retsina and came up with the plot of a children’s novel involving the ghosts of Ancient Greeks in the ruins of Elefsis. Gerald has a PhD in Elizabethan Literature and set his adult fantasy novel Hy Brazil in that period.

“I would probably have felt very comfortable in the 16th Century,’ he says. “Partly because people dressed in ruffs and stuffed breeches would be unlikely to stare if they saw me out and about in my morris dancing kit in the summer.”

Gerald has published five novels, two collections of poetry and a play. n

Taking the Plunge:

Conwy Mind is going for a Sea Dip for Mental Health

Talking about your feelings can be tough. For many, it’s a moment that can make you freeze and genuinely take your breath away. It’s a hard step to take, but one that is much easier to clear when you have the right support.

This is the idea behind Conwy Minds Seal Splash. It’s a challenge that mirrors that “frozen” feeling, but turns it into something bold, exhilarating, and – most importantly – fun.

Serious Cause, Silly Outfits

While the reason for the dip is important, the event itself is far from formal. All “splashers” are encouraged to turn up in fancy dress. Whether you want to dive in as a superhero, a giant penguin, or in your favourite bright wig, the goal is to break the stigma of mental health and keep the spirits high. It’s about showing that while mental health is a serious topic, supporting it can be a joyful, shared experience and not something to fear.

Women in business

This March we are celebrating International Women’s Day by highlighting the inspiring women across North Wales who are driving innovation, strengthening the local economy – and paving the way for the next generation of female entrepreneurs.

Beth Morgan-Jones

What is your name & the name of your business?

My name is Beth Morgan-Jones, and I’m the maker behind Ewemoo Footstools.

What makes your business stand out from the crowd?

Ewemoo footstools are all handmade in Wales, using traditional upholstery techniques and carefully chosen materials. Each piece is made to last and designed to feel at home in real, lived-in spaces. I take a lot of pride in creating items that are practical, full of character, and made with care rather than speed.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

To stay true to your values and not rush the process. Building

something meaningful takes time, and doing things properly always shows in the end. Follow your dreams, don’t give up.

And what advice would you pass on to young female entrepreneurs?

Be kind to yourself and trust your instincts. You don’t have to know everything at the start — learning as you go is part of the journey. Don’t be afraid to take up space, ask questions, and believe that your ideas are worth pursuing. Never give up.

What keeps you motivated?

I’m motivated by the joy people get from something that’s been made especially for them. Knowing that my work becomes part of someone’s home and everyday life is incredibly rewarding.

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

The sense of independence and pride that comes from building a brand of your own. It’s challenging, but very fulfilling.

What do you love about your job?

I love working with my Ewemoo team. We work by using traditional skills to create something both useful and beautiful. No two days — or stools — are ever quite the same, and that keeps the work interesting and special.

How can people get in touch?

People can get in touch via our website, social media or by getting in touch directly to chat about commissions or ideas. n

Sarah Lloyd

What is your name & the name of your business?

My name is Sarah Lloyd, and I am the founder of Lot 11 Café in Wrexham.

What’s makes your business stand out from the crowd?

We’re an Aussie-style brunch café, no greasy breakfast or full English to be found, just nice fresh produce, an independent vibe and friendly table service.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

Look after your staff and they will look after you. Invest in training and invest in your staff, we don’t have a chef at the café, we train all the staff to be able to operate the kitchen, the coffee machine and the floor, that way if someone is unavailable there is no stress and everyone can pitch in.

And what advice would you pass on to young female entrepreneurs?

Don’t listen to too many opinions, most people are negative and scared to take risks – and those are the people you should not listen to. Networking is always a good thing, you never know who you will strike up a conversation with.

What keeps you motivated?

Travel, I love to travel, even if it’s just a two-day break. Seeing the world opens your eyes to new opportunities – you can often get tunnel vision if you have the same routine constantly.

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

It’s never boring, there is always something to do, worry about, get on with. You meet different people every day, and sometimes new opportunities present themselves that gives you a boost.

What do you love about your job?

My loyal regulars, we really wouldn’t be where we are today without them. We feel part of their lives and they feel part of ours.

How can people get in touch?

The best way is to pop in for a bite to eat and see the café for yourself! n

What’s makes your business stand out from the crowd?

We offer both wall-mounted mirrors and fullsize mirrors on wheels, giving gyms and studios the freedom to choose a permanent or flexible setup. Built for clarity, durability, and everyday use, our mirrors support better technique, confidence, and performance.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

Listen to your customers. They’ll tell you exactly how to improve your business.

And what advice would you pass on to young female entrepreneurs?

Believe in your vision, even when others don’t see it yet. Stay consistent, learn from setbacks, and remember that confidence grows with action.

What keeps you motivated?

Seeing our mirrors make a real difference in how people train — helping improve confidence, technique, and performance — is what keeps me motivated.

Seeing something you’ve built make a real impact for customers and their spaces is incredibly rewarding.

Carol Llewelyn Jones

What is your name & the name of your business?

My name is Carol Llewelyn Jones, and together with my husband and daughter, we are the proud owners and we run Welsh Lady Preserves, in Y Ffor, near Pwllheli.

What’s makes your business stand out from the crowd?

We stand out from the crowd in many ways. Despite being a small business – we have 24 on the payroll, which includes the three family members – we are a AA grade BRCGS accredited site. Being an AA grade BRCGS accredited site communicates: “This business operates at the highest certified standard of food safety management, with strong systems, strong governance, and low operational risk.” What this translates to our customers is that we are a low-risk supplier; we take food safety seriously; we operate structured systems; we protect their brand and that we are commercially credible. And as BRCGS is a world standard, we have an international customer base. We are also a Welsh family business. Welsh is the first language spoken at our site. We participate in events in the community regularly – visiting schools to talk about what it is like to run a business, to explain how to use fruit and vegetables to make jam and chutneys at home.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

It’s the advice I give myself – pay your bills on time. Taking care of my suppliers and contractors is essential for the smooth running of the business. I appreciate that cash flow is an issue for many these days; don’t make things harder than they need to be for anyone.

And what advice would you pass on to young female entrepreneurs?

It is tough for anyone in business; you need to have very broad shoulders and have the capability to spin several plates simultaneously! Don’t let the rejects knock you down –if ever you do feel deflated, pick yourself up, give yourself a talking to and get on with it! And I always say to myself that I can do anything –work at finding solutions and don’t give in to the hurdle.

What keeps you motivated?

I am motivated by wanting to preserve (excuse the pun!) the heritage of the family running the business which was set up by my parents-in-law Marion and Dio Jones, back in 1966. And to keep the business means that we keep the families of those who work for us in the area; work is provided for them in their community. I went away to work after I graduated from university; not everybody can do that or would choose to because of lack of confidence or some other obligations. I feel it is so important to provide a source of employment in rural areas, which obviously in turn, is good for the local economy.

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

I like to know what’s going on. Working for someone else means that there is always something going on in the background that you don’t know, or not aware of. I am a bit of a control freak!

What do you love about your job?

Where do I start! I love developing new products. John will create a recipe – he has an amazing pallet, and I will do the actual cooking of the product in a little kitchen I have on site. I remember, I had eight attempts before being happy with our Piccalilly! I like meeting new customers we act as a co-manufacturing partner for brands that need additional capacity, technical capability, or certified production standards – this is always very interesting. n

Kerry Fisher

What is your name & the name of your business?

My name is Kerry Fisher and I own Eyecadia in Wrexham.

What makes your business stand out from the crowd?

The process. At Eyecadia you answer a short questionnaire before your appointment. It explores how you like to present yourself with your fashion choices, which gives me a head start on curating a collection of frames I know you will love. I am also studying to be a qualified Colour Stylist. Starting in May 2026, you can book a session to find out which colours suit you best, based on the science of colour. All of this gives my clients the confidence to wear their eyewear with pride and adore what they wear. It makes me very happy.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

Don’t look at what your competitors are doing. Now I know that might not work for most industries, but it is true for mine. Copying what other opticians are doing regarding frames, lenses, and even social media trends saturates the market with a ‘samey’ vibe. My shop is a unique space and I wanted my products and brand presentation to reflect that.

And what advice would you pass on to young female entrepreneurs?

Do not listen to your imposter syndrome. I cannot tell you how many times I have hesitated because of my own thoughts. Thinking that others will judge, be negative, or downright hate what I was doing. I’ve learnt that you will NEVER please everyone, so find your tribe and cater to them, they will love you for it.

What keeps you motivated? What do you love about your job?

The collection appointment. Seeing clients’ faces light up with joy is pure gold for me. In optics, the frame is the only tangible part. When it comes to lenses, the customer is putting their faith in you regarding how they will look in that frame, it’s a gamble on their part. So seeing them unbox their new specs and be overjoyed with the result is an absolute motivator to keep showing up for each and every client.

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

I have to say it is the variety of skills I have learnt. I probably spend about 50% of my time dispensing, which is what I studied. The rest of the time, I am the CFO, product procurement, marketing director, content creator, IT, the list goes on. I never thought I would know how to build a website, but here I am, 40 years old and still learning to wear all the hats!

How can people get in touch?

The best way would be to visit the shop, I am a people person so I love meeting customers face-to-face. You can find me in the Wrexham Butchers Market, unit 10B, accessible via the High Street entrance. n

Zoey Smith

What is your name & the name of your business?

I’m Zoey Marie Smith, owner and principle solicitor at Baines Solicitors in Llandudno.

Tell us about your business…

Baines Solicitors are a niche law firm specialising in personal injury, clinical negligence, family and divorce and civil litigation. The firm is named after my late mother whose unwavering support and guidance were pivotal in my journey to establishing this practice. Her values of integrity, compassion and persistence inspires me every day as I work on behalf of my clients.

What’s makes your business stand out from the crowd?

At Baines Solicitors, we believe everyone deserves high quality legal services and advice regardless of their circumstances. Our firm is built on the principle that legal support should be approachable and understandable, eliminating intimidation often associated with legal matters.

What sets us apart is our commitment to redefining the legal experience, we wanted to create a welcoming environment where clients felt comfortable discussing their concerns. Our office combines a modern, trendy design with an inviting atmosphere making each visit a positive one. We aim to communicate in clear, straightforward language, avoiding legal jargon and ensuring that every client understands their options.

Our innovative approach includes a range of services tailored to meet diverse needs, from personalised consultations to flexible payment plans. We focus on building relationships, listening to our clients and providing them with the support they deserve. Our goal is to make legal assistance more accessible and client-friendly, fostering an experience that feels less like a transaction and more like a partnership.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

To be myself which has shaped me as a Solicitor. In a profession that can sometimes lean towards formality and rigidity, it is important to be transparent and relatable, this obviously allows clients to feel comfortable without the fear of judgement. Being yourself, particularly in the legal

profession builds trust and effective communication between client and solicitor but also allows for a more enjoyable and fulfilling career.

And what advice would you pass on to young female entrepreneurs?

Build a strong network of supportive individuals, your network is your net worth! Relationship building is crucial. Embrace persistence in the face of challenges, setbacks are common and should be viewed as learning opportunities. The most important advice is to believe in yourself! Never let the fear that you are not good enough stop you from reaching for your goals. Your mindset is everything.

What keeps you motivated?

The legal field is constantly evolving which keeps my work engaging and stimulating. Staying updated with the latest laws and practices inspires me to enhance my skills and ensure that my clients receive the highest standard of representation.

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

Freedom to choose when, where and how I work allowing for a better work life balance and the satisfaction of seeing your ideas come to life and watching your business grow. You are also in control of your own destiny creating stability and security under your own terms.

What

do you love about your

job?

Making a real difference. The major drive for me is the ability to help clients navigate difficult or stressful times. I also love that no two days are the same, the role is never static as different clients and cases bring unique challenges that prevent work load from becoming monotonous.

How can people get in touch?

If you would like to get in touch, you can reach out via all of the usual channels. You can book an appointment directly on our website, or you can connect on social media where I regularly share updates! n

Sheena Corry

What is your name & the name of your business?

I’m Sheena Corry, founder and owner of The Forge Corwen, an eco-glamping retreat venue in Denbighshire specialising in wellness and corporate retreats. We offer five bell tents, two shepherd’s huts and a gypsy caravan for 10-20 guests, plus indoor and outdoor spaces for yoga, meetings and events. Set on 20 acres near Corwen, the site includes a natural swimming pond, wood-fired sauna, wildflower meadows, woodland walks and views across to the Eryri mountains, as well as a listed IronAge hill fort.

What makes your business stand out from the crowd?

We built everything from scratch — from the cabins to the pond and woodland spaces. When we arrived, it was just fields. Our original aim wasn’t to create a retreat venue, but to rewild the land and work towards self-sufficiency in response to the climate crisis. Sharing that ethos with our guests has become central to what we do. We care deeply about making every guest feel valued, immersed in nature and truly looked after. People leave feeling relaxed, refreshed and inspired — what we call “The Forge Magic” — and it stays with them long after they’ve left.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

Don’t get too comfortable — always look at least two years ahead. Markets change quickly, so anticipate what clients will need before they know it themselves. For us, that means leaning into the AI revolution by creating spaces and experiences that protect and nurture the distinctly human skills that AI can’t replicate — in-person connection, shared creativity and being truly present in the moment. Never underestimate the power of gathering people around a campfire to spark ideas and break down barriers! Secondly, look after your clients and they will look after you. I’ve focused on building strong relationships, particularly with other femalefounded small businesses in North Wales. I’ve never believed in competition — as my old boss said, “a rising tide lifts all ships.”

And what advice would you pass on to young female entrepreneurs?

Prioritise your health and wellbeing. As a solopreneur, you ARE the business. Success isn’t about working every hour — it’s about impact. After working 20 years in the City, I had to

https://theforgecorwen.co.uk

rethink how I approached work and protect time for myself. Competing in triathlons and ultra marathons helps me stay strong physically and mentally — and keeps me energised for the demands of running The Forge. Secondly, don’t be afraid to fail — and fail fast. Your business sits at the centre of a Venn diagram: what you love, what you’re good at, who you want to work with, what earns money, and what the market wants. If something isn’t working, let it go. Adapt, find the overlap, and build from there.

What keeps you motivated?

Running The Forge is hard work, and sometimes a safe desk job seems very appealing! But nothing compares to hearing that a retreat has changed someone’s life. I know from my own experience of burnout how powerful it is to step away — to enjoy nourishing food, cold water swimming, hot saunas, good sleep, and a real sense of community. Seeing those transformations makes everything worthwhile.

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

The freedom, I can shape my week around the weather – exploring swim spots for retreats one day, working on strategy the next. I love being able to make and implement decisions quickly, test ideas and refine what works. Our annual International Women’s Day Swim & Sauna event started on a whim and became a huge success. When you strike a chord, you can run with it.

What do you love about your job?

It doesn’t feel like a job — it’s a lifestyle. The Forge is my home and rewilding adventure, and I’m proud that it’s evolved into a sustainable business. I still work with incredibly talented people, but now they come to me. Plus, I get to swim in waterfalls and eat cake for a living!

How can people get in touch?

People can visit us online, and via all of the usual social media channels. We’re also happy to chat on the phone but, to get a true sense of what we’re about, get in touch to arrange a visit! n

Melanie Gizzi

What is your name & the name of your business?

My name is Melanie Gizzi, founder of OMG FABULOUS and owner of StudiOMG Wellness Hub in Abergele. By the way, ‘OMG’ stands for Oh Melanie Gizzi. As well as: Organisation & Motivation Guide, #OwnMyGoals and a few more.

Tell us about your business…

OMG FABULOUS is a wellness and self-care brand dedicated to helping people ‘feel FAB on the inside and out’. Through my venue, StudiOMG, I combine beauty therapy, holistic wellbeing coaching, nutritional insight and energy work to create personalised transformation experiences. My mission is to redefine self-care as a structured, empowering system - not an occasional treat, but a sustainable way of living. My passion for this work comes from lived experience. As a survivor of corporate burnout, fertility struggles and mental health challenges, I truly understand the importance of balance and resilience. I teach from experience, which allows me to connect with clients in a genuine and supportive way. I created the OMGFAB mindset model and self-care system as practical, easy-to-implement guides that empower people to support themselves. From planners and journals to positive slogan merchandise and Amazon-published books, each resource has a purposeful place – especially for those curious about personal development but not yet ready to work with a coach. I believe we can all become our own best coaches when we have the right tools. StudiOMG has also grown into a thriving wellbeing hub, hosting a wide variety of workshops, classes and events led by both myself and guest facilitators. I’m passionate about supporting other practitioners by offering a space where they can share their skills and grow their own businesses. Many sessions sell out quickly, and clients often des cribe the studio as their “happy place,” which is the greatest compliment I could receive.

What makes your business stand out from the crowd?

My work bridges science, wellbeing and community impact. Alongside running OMG FABULOUS and StudiOMG, I’m proud to have recently been awarded Volunteer of the Year by Abergele Town Council for my community contribution. I’m also a Dementia Friend Ambassador and Happiness Club trainer, which allows me to deliver resilience workshops and educational sessions for organisations, schools and community groups. For me, business isn’t just about

treatments or services – it’s about creating meaningful change. Being a woman in business gives me the flexibility and platform to support both my family, my clients and my community, which makes my work deeply purposeful.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received?

Be authentic – your uniqueness is your superpower. When you build something aligned with your values and purpose, everything becomes more impactful and sustainable.

What advice would you pass on to young female entrepreneurs?

Trust your vision even if others don’t see it yet. Confidence grows through action, not perfection. Start before you feel ready, keep learning and remember that resilience is more important than speed. Two mantras I now live by are: Practice means progress. Progress over perfection.

What keeps you motivated?

Seeing people transform – physically, emotionally and mentally. When someone walks in feeling depleted and leaves feeling empowered, that reminds me why I started. I thrive from ‘sparkly heart moments’ –hence I created another hashtag to remind people to #DoWhatMakesYourHeartSparkle – life is for living!

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

The freedom to create meaningful change and design experiences that genuinely improve people’s lives. I am all about energy, so if something FEELS RIGHT then I just do it!

What do you love about your job?

The connection. Every client has a story, and being trusted to support someone’s well-being journey is a privilege I never take for granted.

How can people get in touch?

Readers can connect with me, explore my services, check out the StudiOMG Community or access self-care resources. n

Jane Kemp

What is your name & the name of your business?

My name is Jane Kemp and I’m the Founder and Creative Director of Jakara Interior Design, based in Llandudno.

What makes your business stand out from the crowd?

For me, interior design is deeply personal. I don’t see clients as projects or numbers, I genuinely care. I see people, their families and their stories. I take the time to truly understand how my clients live or work, how they want to feel in their spaces, and what they want their homes or businesses to say about them. That personal connection allows me to create interiors that don’t just look beautiful, they feel meaningful, considered and entirely reflective of who they are.

My work is known for its boutique-hotel style eleganceluxurious, timeless, and refined, yet it is always rooted in connection. I am hands-on and present throughout the process, and I sincerely want the best for every client who reaches out for my assistance. I bring nearly 14 years of experience and structure, all whilst never losing the human element. Each client I work with knows they’re supported, listened to and guided every step of the way.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

To know my value, and protect it. As women especially, we can sometimes feel we need to over-deliver to prove ourselves. I’ve learned that valuing your expertise, setting clear boundaries and charging properly doesn’t make you less kind, it makes you sustainable. When you run your business sustainably, you can serve your clients even better.

Also to ”Take care at the beginning, for it’s the beginning that determines the end”. As an Interior Designer, that couldn’t be more true. The early decisions, the research, the planning, the proportions and details, these shape everything that follows.

What advice would you pass on to young female entrepreneurs?

Trust yourself sooner. I’ve always loved my former boss Sir Richard Branson’s advice: ‘Say yes to the opportunity and learn how to do it later.’ Some of my biggest growth moments have come from stepping into projects that stretched me. You don’t have to have everything figured out, you just have to be

willing to rise to it and believe in yourself. Start before you feel completely ready. Stay consistent. Keep learning. Don’t dilute who you are to fit in. There is strength in empathy. There is strength in intuition. You can be both warm and strong in business, they are not opposites.

What keeps you motivated?

Seeing the impact that a well-designed space I’ve created has on someone’s life. Homes shape how we feel and how we use them every single day. When a client tells me they love walking into the interiors I’ve designed, that they sleep better, host more, feel calmer or simply love walking through their front door again, that sincerely means the world to me.

What’s the best thing about owning a

business?

Autonomy. Owning a business gives you the freedom to build something that reflects your values. I decide the style direction, the standards, the pace and the vision. It’s responsibility, yes, however it’s also creative freedom. It’s also about building something that reflects who you are. Jakara isn’t just a company name, it’s years of commitment, growth, resilience and belief. Owning a business allows me to create with intention and to build meaningful, lasting relationships with the people I work with.

What do you love about your job?

The psychology of it. Interior design isn’t just about colour palettes and furniture, it’s about understanding how someone wants to feel in their space. When a client walks into a beautiful stylish finished room I’ve created and they feel that it’s exactly right, that’s the moment I love most, the look of wonder and delight. It’s about the transformation, not just of spaces, but seeing the differences it makes to people and how they feel about where they live.

How

can people get in touch?

Call us for a friendly chat in the first instance to discuss your hopes and aspirations for your spaces. We can then arrange a free, no obligation consultation to view the property and explore your ideas in person. It’s never too early to appoint a designer - whether you’re building from scratch, purchasing a new-build, refurbishing or reconfiguring your home. We work across North Wales, Cheshire and beyond. n

Wendy Thompson

What is your name & the name of your business?

My name is Wendy Thompson and I run Ffansi Frogs with my daughter Robyn Unsworth.

Tell us about your business…

Ffansi Ffrogs is a prom boutique based in Ruthin, offering a highly personal, appointment-led prom shopping experience. One of our core aims is to provide families in North Wales with a genuine local option — offering the same premium brands and quality found in city boutiques, but with a far more personal level of service. We want people to feel they can shop locally without compromising on choice, experience, or quality. The business was created at a point where it was relevant to our own lives and experiences. The strongest businesses are built around what matters to you at that point in your life. Ffansi Ffrogs reflects that completely and was founded when my daughter and I were unable to find a local option for her own prom in 2023.

What makes your business stand out from the crowd? Experience and customer care sit at the heart of everything we do. We are much more than a shop – we genuinely care about the memories you make as a family when you choose your dress with us. We offer calm appointments with individual attention and thoughtful touches that are often missing in larger, more impersonal boutiques. Families are encouraged to relax and enjoy the experience together. We aim to make the whole process stress free. We’re also proud to offer appointments in Welsh, which is important to us and to many of the families we serve. Creating a welcoming, comfortable environment — in every sense — is central to what we do.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

Not to allow myself to become an employee of my own business — to make sure I run the business, rather than allowing the business to run me. I focus on what I need the business to provide, be that financial or lifestyle goals and all my planning is geared towards how I achieve this.

and trusted, they naturally care more about the experience they’re helping to create.

It’s easy to slip into working in your business rather than on it, especially in the early stages. I have learned to step back, think strategically and trust others. When staff feel valued

What advice would you pass on to young female entrepreneurs?

Pay attention to whether the fire is still there. Without genuine passion for what you’re doing, it becomes incredibly difficult to succeed — or to enjoy the business you’ve built. You have to care about your work, because that passion is what carries you through the harder days.

It’s also important to recognise when something no longer fulfils you, and to have the courage to walk away if it doesn’t. In my own experience, I owned a successful soft play centre but my children had grown and my heart was no longer in it. Rather than carry on, I chose to close it, take a risk and build something new that felt relevant to my life now. Changing direction isn’t failure — sometimes it’s the most honest and successful decision you can make.

What keeps you motivated?

Seeing people leave feeling confident, supported, and excited about such an important milestone is incredibly rewarding. Running Ffansi Ffrogs alongside my daughter also brings a huge sense of motivation. Building something meaningful together, and watching it grow, has been one of the most fulfilling parts of this journey.

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

The freedom to make decisions and take the business in the direction I believe is best. I value the challenge that comes with knowing the responsibility rests with me — both the successes and the setbacks. That accountability pushes me to keep driving the business forward, to make considered decisions, and to continually improve what we offer. That balance of freedom, responsibility, and challenge is something I find incredibly motivating.

Beth Horrocks

What is your name & the name of your business?

My name is Beth Horrocks and I’m a graphic artist and gallery owner at Oriel Beth Horrocks Gallery.

Tell us about your business...

I create contemporary artwork inspired by the landscapes that surround me. I often say that I don’t draw places as they are — I draw how they feel. The mountains, lakes and coastline of North Wales provide endless inspiration, and my aim is to capture that sense of atmosphere and light in a way that brings colour, calm and connection into people’s homes.

My business has grown steadily from a love of drawing rather than a traditional business plan. After studying Graphic Arts at university, I worked for many years as a graphic designer, developing the digital skills and visual confidence that now underpin my artwork. Over time my landscape drawings became more than a personal creative outlet, and what began as something I did for enjoyment gradually evolved into a full-time business. Opening my own gallery in 2022 was a leap of faith, but it allowed me to create something truly personal — a space where visitors can experience the artwork in the landscape that inspired it.

What makes your business stand out from the crowd?

What sets my business apart is not only the artwork itself but also the experience of visiting the gallery. It sits beside the estuary in a calm, light-filled, award-winning space that encourages visitors to slow down and enjoy the surroundings. Many people tell me they feel a sense of calm as soon as they walk through the door, which reflects exactly what I hope my artwork conveys. Because I design and produce all of the work myself, there is a genuine authenticity behind every piece. Visitors often recognise the places I draw and share their own memories of those landscapes, and that shared sense of place makes each piece feel especially meaningful.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received?

I didn’t set out to become a business owner and I’ve learned as I’ve gone along. If I were to offer one piece of advice it would be this: don’t wait for permission. You don’t need anyone’s validation to create something meaningful. Trust your instincts, follow what feels right and be prepared to work hard. There is no single path into business, and sometimes you have to create your own opportunities.

What advice would you pass on to young female entrepreneurs?

Believe in yourself and take your ambitions seriously. Don’t wait until you feel completely ready — confidence usually grows through experience. If you have an idea or a dream, start working towards it, even in small steps.

What keeps you motivated?

The landscape remains my greatest source of inspiration. Walking or running outdoors through the changing seasons gives me fresh ideas and new colour palettes. Staying active, spending time with family and looking after my well-being helps maintain the energy needed to run a creative business.

I also enjoy exploring new creative directions such as ceramics, and I still feel a real excitement when releasing new work into the world. Seeing people connect with my artwork and hearing their feedback is incredibly motivating.

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

The best thing about owning a business is the independence. I value the freedom to make creative decisions and shape my own direction. There is a real satisfaction in turning ideas into reality, and the more effort and care you invest, the more rewarding it becomes.

What do you love about your job?

When people connect with my artwork, it makes all the hard work worthwhile. In a world that can often feel heavy with bad news, my aim is simple — to create artwork that brings colour, calm and uplift. That instinctive spark of inspiration continues to drive my work every day. For me, success isn’t just about running a business — it’s about building a creative life rooted in the landscape I love and sharing that with others.

How can people get in touch?

Via all of the usual social media channels, and via my website. But, of course, it goes without saying that the best way is to pop into my gallery in Caernarfon! n

Spring into adventure!

The sun is starting to make an appearance and the days are getting longer, so what better way to celebrate than with an exciting family day out?

Ruthin Craft Centre

Ruthin Craft Centre has some fascinating exhibitions on this month. In Gallery 1 you can see ‘Between my Finger and my Thumb’, a solo exhibition by Claire Curneen. Claire creates hand-built figurative sculptures in white porcelain, sometimes with touches of blue or gold, their translucent and fragile qualities offer metaphors through which we can consider the human condition and experience. In Gallery 2 ‘Meadow’ by ceramicist Jane Perryman draws on the experience of rewilding an acre of agricultural land, using this natural bounty to create pigments to add colour to a series of ceramic forms. Meanwhile, in Gallery 3 ‘A Curious Tale’ by Becky Adams, in her first solo exhibition in over ten years, comprises of an entire town made from discarded books and centres around a poem that tells the story of a little moth who dreams of the Grand Moth Ball. Finally, in the CELF Gallery, you’ll find an exhibition of contemporary silver from the P&O Makower Trust on loan to Amgueddfa Cymru, Museum Wales. www.ruthincraftcentre.org.uk

Rackery Farm Shop

Rooted in three generations of farming passion, Rackery Farm Shop is a unique destination to visit in Wrexham. Rackery Farm Shop is based in Llay on the outskirts of Wrexham town, and is now open seven days a week after recent demand. You can shop fresh local produce from across Wrexham and North Wales as well as enjoy a spot of breakfast or brunch which are prepared with a strong focus on local ingredients. Larissa and Jake want to bring a unique destination to the Wrexham area where customers can enjoy locally sourced produce both in the farm shop and the café at an affordable price. If you’ve ever struggled to find a family day out that isn’t just soft play or another trip to the cinema, Xplore! Science Discovery Centre might be your new favourite discovery. Right in the heart of Wrexham, Xplore! is loud in the best way – full of button-pressing, wheel-spinning, experiment-testing chaos. Kids aren’t told to “look but don’t touch” here. They’re encouraged to get stuck in. One minute they’re launching objects across the room to test forces, the next they’re challenging each other to brain-teasing puzzles or discovering how their own bodies work. Even the grown-ups can’t resist having a go. And then there’s the Live Science Show, included with weekend and school holiday tickets. Expect big reactions, dramatic demonstrations and plenty of “how did they do that?!” moments. It’s hands-on educational fun, where curiosity takes centre stage. www.xplorescience.co.uk

HOLIDAYS

Arriving at a Shacks cabin often feels like stepping out of the usual flow of time. Set in secluded corners of North Wales, Cheshire and Staffordshire, these off-grid retreats are designed for guests seeking immersion in landscape rather than escape from it. Each sleeps two to four people and welcomes dogs, making them ideal for small groups wanting to share a simpler way of living for a few days.

Here, life quickly finds a gentler rhythm. Mornings unfold slowly, days centre on fresh air and nearby trails and evenings settle into warmth, firelight and expansive night skies. Outdoor baths and wide windows ensure the landscape remains part of the experience from start to finish.

Constructed using locally sourced sustainable materials, the cabins operate off-grid and are positioned with care to preserve the character of their locations. The emphasis is on low-impact travel that still feels deeply comfortable. What guests take away is not just rest but perspective - a reminder of how good it feels to live at a more natural pace. www.shacks.co.uk

Conwy Brewery

Rooted in Wales, brewed with soul

There’s something quietly special about cracking open a beer that actually means something. Not a beer chasing a trend or riding a hashtag, but one made by people who know this land, love it, and brew it into every pint. That’s Conwy Brewery – and if you haven’t discovered them yet, you’re in for a treat.

Founded in 2003 and based in Llysfaen in the heart of Conwy county, this is a brewery that’s earned its place on the bar over two decades of doing things properly. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, it’s hard to imagine a more fitting home for ales that feel as honest and unhurried as the landscape around them.

Beers worth coming back for

In a world of gimmicky craft releases and shelf-life novelties, Conwy Brewery has always backed drinkability over drama. Their flagship Welsh Pride – a smooth, malty, copper-coloured ale – has quietly become a staple of North Wales pub life, and for good reason. It’s the kind of pint you order again without thinking twice. Clogwyn Gold brings a brighter, hoppier character, while Beachcomber Blonde is the perfect easydrinker for a sunny afternoon somewhere with a view.

A

place and a purpose

What sets Conwy Brewery apart isn’t just what’s in the glass –it’s what sits behind it. Local employment, regional sourcing, collaborations with nearby businesses: this is a brewery that puts its community first and wears that quietly as a badge of honour. At a time when Welsh identity feels more vibrant and celebrated than ever, Conwy Brewery is very much part of that story – as much a cultural marker as the castles on the horizon.

They’re also taking sustainability seriously – recycling spent grain, reducing packaging waste, keeping a close eye on water and energy use. Small steps, perhaps, but they add up to something that feels genuinely considered rather than performative.

Come and see for yourself

But there’s more going on than tradition alone. Black Dragon Stout brings dark, brooding depth to the range, Seidr nods to Wales’s cider-making heritage with something genuinely different, and Sero – a 0.5% lager – means nobody has to miss out. These aren’t trends being chased; they’re the range of a brewery that’s listening to what people actually want.

The best way to fall properly in love with Conwy Brewery? Visit. Every weekend, the brewery opens its doors for tours – just £15 with a pint or a bottle to take home included. It’s a brilliant afternoon out, and the kind of experience that turns a casual drinker into a loyal fan. Their taproom, Mashtap (open 5pm onwards Mon-Sun) is the place to settle in and explore the range properly – the perfect stop whether you’re local or just passing through.

You’ll also find Conwy beers across North Wales pubs, restaurants, and farm shops, with their own retail spots on Llandudno Pier and at Queens Market in Rhyl. Go on - give them a try. Ales brewed this well deserve your support. n

You can order the full range to be delivered to your door at www.conwybrewery.co.uk – and contact them about trade enquiries too.

Cocktail of the month

The Bee’s Knees

As March kicks off with St David`s Day, why not make the entire month a Welsh one? One where all of the ingredients for a zingy fresh cocktail come locally?

The Bee’s Knees is a cocktail that dates all the way back to the prohibition era of the 1920’s. Consisting of gin, lemon juice and honey, the drink uses 1920’s slang for “The Best” –and is the perfect drink to source local ingredients for.

North Wales has over 700 years of documented, high-quality honey production – notably celebrated at the historic Conwy Honey Fair established by Edward I. Historically, honey was a vital source of sweetener and wax, with monastic communities honing mead-making skills, and it remains a culturally significant, prized, and scientifically backed antibacterial product.

We also have distinctive Heather honey here in North Wales. Welsh Heather Honey (Mel Grug Cymru) is a premium, 100% natural honey produced by the Western Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) foraging from the vibrant heather moorlands of Wales. Predominantly sourced from Ling Heather, the most abundant heather species in Wales, this honey reflects the rugged beauty of its origin.

So it makes perfect sense that we celebrate St David’s Day (and the rest of March!) with a honey-based cocktail that can make the best use of what nature has given us right here on our doorstep…

To make a Bee’s Knees with a North Walian twist, we add some honey syrup with a 2.1 ratio to ensure we got all that flavour and richness. We used Rhos-on-Sea honey that we got

THE INGREDIENTS

45ml Summit Gin

5ml Rye Whiskey (Sazerac Rye)

25ml Lemon Juice

15ml Honey Syrup

from our neighbours Brethertons’ Delicatessen – you can’t get any more local than that!

For our gin we are using Summit from Snowdon Craft –this gin is hand crafted utilising Snowdonia water in the distillation process. The taste of the gin is very juniper forward, with hits of lemon that paired well with the sweetness of the honey, as the juniper breaks that sweetness well for a very well-balanced taste.

We added lemon next. This is our sour addition to help bring all of the flavours together, plus shaking citrus will break down the enzymes and bond with the alcohol.

Finally we added some rye, as we needed to break down that sweetness just a little bit more. The spice from rye smooths out the entire flavour and brings this beautiful cocktail together – Iechyd da! n

Alex Van der Merwe is the bar manager at Number 25 in Rhos-on-Sea. This local bar and bistro is home to a cosy restaurant upstairs and a welcoming cocktail bar downstairs – making it the ideal venue, whatever the occasion.

Renewable energy systems for your home

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.

Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.

Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.

A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.

The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.

If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.

Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n

For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

Tourism and leisure business advice on hand in Conwy

North Wales has always been a popular holiday destination, and its burgeoning reputation for outdoor and wellbeing enthusiasts is presenting new opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs.

A growing shift to year-round tourism means more options for a wide range of businesses, from caravan parks to adventure activities, and lawyers at a Conwy-based law firm say they have seen a noticeable increase in demand for their services.

Juana Eastwood, a commercial property solicitor who specialises in tourism and leisure at Lanyon Bowdler, says the sector makes a significant contribution to the local economy and is on an upward trajectory.

“Since Lanyon Bowdler opened its offices in Conwy nearly seven years ago, we have seen a steady increase in cases involving tourism and leisure businesses,” she says.

“It’s been great to see so many new businesses thriving and established businesses growing, which can present its own challenges requiring professional legal advice. We have a specialist team working with a range of businesses in the tourism sector, such as acting for landlords and tenants in

respect of commercial leases, along with buying and selling businesses.”

So if you are considering buying or selling a business, what are the key things to consider?

“Firstly, it’s important for us to understand the key commercial drivers for the deal,” explains Juana. “What are the reasons for buying – is it due to expansion, strengthening the market share or diversification?

“On the other side of the coin, what are the reasons for selling? Often it is retirement or due to personal or financial circumstances changing. We then liaise with the accountants directly to discuss the deal and structure of the transaction.

This holistic approach ensures that the client is well-prepared to navigate the complexities of buying or selling a tourism business effectively.” n

MORE THAN A SCHOOL

Sixth Form is the moment when potential starts to take clearer shape. Academic interests deepen, ambitions become more defined, and young people begin making decisions that influence the next stage of their lives. It is an exciting, formative period — and one in which the right environment can make a profound difference.

That is why more families are looking closely at Sixth Form boarding. At this stage, the question is not only about academic choice, but about context: what setting will help a young person flourish, grow in confidence, and make the most of these important years?

Sixth Form moves quickly. Courses demand more depth, independent study becomes essential, and deadlines come with greater frequency. Alongside this, pupils are weighing up university pathways, apprenticeships and longer-term goals. In that landscape, success is rarely about ability alone. It is about having the time, habits and support to use ability well. This is where boarding can be especially powerful.

At its best, Sixth Form boarding creates the conditions for purposeful, balanced living. A clear weekly rhythm supports the habits that matter most: focused study, healthy routines, good sleep, and space to recharge. Those foundations are often what sustain strong academic performance over time. Boarding brings a consistency that helps pupils stay on track while still enjoying the wider richness of school life.

Just as importantly, it strengthens belonging. Teenagers may be constantly connected digitally, but the most meaningful confidence often grows through shared, everyday experiences – meals together, evening prep, team training, rehearsals, house life and informal conversation. These daily rhythms build friendships and trust. They also create a sense of being known, which is invaluable in a phase of life

that can feel both exciting and uncertain.

Sixth Form is also the ideal point for independence to be developed well. Pupils at this age are ready to take real ownership of their learning and their choices. They are preparing not just for examinations, but for life beyond school. Boarding supports that transition in a way that is both purposeful and supportive: pupils have greater autonomy, but within a structure that helps them manage competing priorities and build good judgement.

That balance – independence with guidance – is one of the strongest arguments for Sixth Form boarding. Young people learn to organise their time, live well with others, and handle responsibility with maturity. These are not secondary benefits. They are central to future success, whether a pupil goes on to university, a degree apprenticeship, or directly into the world of work.

From September 2026, Rydal Penrhos will introduce Sixth Form Boarding in New House. It will combine the focus and community of boarding with the strengths for which the school is known: small class sizes, expert teaching, and outstanding pastoral care. The result is an environment where each pupil is challenged, supported and understood as an individual.

Sixth Form is a decisive chapter. For many families, it may also be the point at which boarding offers its greatest advantages. n

Treating Dry Eye at its source: Meibomian Gland probing and expression

Dry eye disease often persists because the root cause – meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) – is overlooked. These oil-producing eyelid glands form the outer tear layer that prevents evaporation. When blocked, tears evaporate quickly, causing dryness, irritation, redness, fluctuating vision, and lid tenderness. Long-standing obstruction can lead to permanent gland damage. While warm compresses and lid hygiene may help mild cases, they are often insufficient when blockage is significant. In-office meibomian gland probing gently opens blocked ducts, followed by gland expression to clear thickened, inflammatory oil. Together, these well-tolerated procedures improve oil flow, reduce inflammation, and restore tear film stability for longer-lasting relief. www.northwaleseyespecialist.co.uk

Remembering Peter Jessop Owen

(1929 – 2026)

In recent weeks, many in Llandudno have been remembering Peter Jessop Owen, who died peacefully in the afternoon on Wednesday, 28th January 2026 at Treflys, Llandudno, aged 96. He spent his final day surrounded by his loving family, a gentle and fitting farewell for a man whose life was defined by service, family and character.

Peter joined his father in the family business in 1945, and for decades he served the people of Llandudno and the surrounding area with a quiet dedication, working in the business until around 1987. To many, he was known as “Pete the Box”, who had a habit of ‘sizing people up’ as he spoke, usually followed by a knowing smile. Underneath that watchful eye was a deep care and attentiveness, and even now, people continue to speak his name, recalling how his calm, caring way at funerals stayed with them for many years.

Peter is survived by his beloved wife Joan, children Scott and Paul, his grandchildren and wider family, all of whom continue to miss him deeply.

A Man of Style and the Sea

Peter was a familiar figure around Llandudno, often spotted in his famous sharp black suit, setting a standard that others later followed. It became part of his identity, though out of work his family knew him as a far more colourful character, fond of his red shirts and brighter clothes. When not working, he could often be found sailing. Despite never learning to swim, he had a lifelong love of the sea.

A Life of Service in Many Forms

Peter’s commitment to service extended far beyond the funeral profession. He was a founding member of the Llandudno Mountain Rescue team and volunteered on the lifeboats in Llandudno, giving his time and energy to help others. He was also a lifelong entertainer and magician, becoming President of the North Wales Magic Circle during his career, delighting family and friends with his magic over the years, often at birthday parties and gatherings, he always delivered with charm, confidence, and a hint of mischief.

Bringing Peter into Our Care

On the evening of his death, Peter was brought into the care of Tom Owen and Son by Tristan and Kelly. It was a deeply emotional moment for the family. Peter had carried out this process countless times throughout his working life, and to

be following in those same steps for him was a powerful reminder of the continuity of care within our family and our profession.

A Funeral Planned with Care (and a bit of flair) by Peter Himself

For someone who had spent a lifetime organising funerals, it was appropriate that Peter had very clear wishes about his funeral. His funeral took place on Wednesday, 18th February 2026 at 12pm, arriving in style by horse-drawn carriage at Holy Trinity Church, Llandudno. The service was full of memories, hymns and readings chosen by Peter.

After the service there was a toast to “Pete the Box” at Maesdu Golf Club. True to his character, Peter also wrote his own funeral notice, requesting that bright colours be worn, a final instruction that perfectly captured his individuality and refusal to be ordinary. Donations in Peter’s memory were made to the RNLI Llandudno Branch, reflecting both his years of volunteering on the lifeboats and his lifelong connection to the sea.

Those who knew Peter will remember the sharp suit, the mischievous smile, and the calm reassurance he brought to others. His was a life lived with purpose, humour and service; one that leaves a lasting mark on the town he loved. n

The gardeners’ guide for protecting nature

Explore North Wales Wildlife Trust’ new Gardeners’ Toolkit for tips on tackling invasive plants in your garden.

Even the smallest garden, window box, or allotment space can be a hub for wildlife. March and April are good months to start planning the best plants to grow and to consider plants that will have the most positive impact on nature and wildlife.

Knowing which plants to watch out for and how to manage them can make a big difference to the wider environment. To help gardeners understand and tackle invasive plants, North Wales Wildlife Trust have developed a free digital and bilingual Gardeners’ Toolkit. It includes:

• Simple steps to help you tackle invasive plants in your garden.

• Plant profiles for tips on identifying invasive plants and exploring alternative plant ideas.

• Video series to learn about the impacts of invasive plants, and how we manage them, from experts.

• Printable calendar to show you the best times of year to tackle invasive species.

• And more!

Not a gardener yourself but know someone who is? Share this Toolkit with them and help protect nature across North Wales!

www.northwaleswildlifetrust.org.uk/gardeners-toolkit

Some plants, known as invasive species, can interrupt the balance of our gardens. They can also escape from our gardens into the wild and cause harm to the environment as well as impact our economy, our health and the way we live. This includes plants like Japanese knotweed, buddleia and red valerian.
