Well, we survived January! In my head this means that the year can really get going now, as the dark days are behind us and spring is just around the corner.
And there is much to look forward to indeed. There is a huge amount going on at our local theatres this month for example – just take a look at our What’s On? pages to see what I mean. And walkers will take delight in the nights drawing out, so that they can really get out and explore all that North Wales has to offer. We have a fabulous feature on the Clwydian Range on page 33 which should inspire most of you to get your walking boots on and get out there!
But for many, February simply means one thing – Valetine’s Day. We have got some great ideas of how to spend this most romantic of evenings, just turn to page 43 to get some inspiration. And, if one thing leads to another on the 14th, then flick

back to page 31 to read all about weddings in the region!
And for those of you with families already, then we’ve got you covered too. Page 37 is all about the best family days out to take during February half term, as we all know how hard it can be to entertain the kids during these last few colder weeks.
However you spend your February I hope that you enjoy it, and I look forward to seeing you in March when we can welcome the arrival of spring together!

Built in the late 19th Century, Garth Pier simply exudes charm. Situated in the heart of Bangor, the architectural style and design of this Grade II listed structure reflect the elegance and craftsmanship of the Victorian era, making it a captivating sight for history enthusiasts. But it’s the views that keep people coming back time and time again, with Anglesey and the picturesque Menai Straights a feast for the eyes while you’re wandering down the pier, and the snowcapped mountains of Eryri bound to blow your mind on the walk back to shore…

Set against Conwy Castle, Morfa Beach and the peaks of Snowdonia, Conwy Marina is your gateway to adventure and time well spent, from sailing and jet skiing to cycling and climbing in North Wales. Whether you’re buying or repairing a boat, enjoying a drink in the sun or laying up for winter, everything you need is here — so relax, or dive straight in, and sail away.

Bethany Birch visits Conwy, and finds an exceptional seaside town that is drenched in history…

Known for its imposing medieval castle, remarkably preserved town walls and winding cobbled streets, Conwy stands among North Wales’ most visited destinations. Yet its appeal extends far beyond history alone. Today, the town pairs heritage with a thriving food scene, a lively harbour and a location that makes it an ideal base for exploring the dramatic mountainscapes of Eryri.
Cross Conwy Bridge and you’re met with scenes that feel lifted straight from a child’s storybook. Weathered stonework forms turrets that rise into the sky; if you’re lucky, it will be blue. Luckier still, you’ll arrive as dusk falls, when the castle is illuminated in a hazy glow, warm and quietly inviting.
Gaze to the left and you’ll spot the Grade I-listed suspension bridge – a sight worthy of pause in its own right. Once one of the first road suspension bridges in the world, it is now

Cross Conwy Bridge and you’re met with scenes that feel lifted straight from a child’s storybook.
owned by the National Trust and open only to pedestrians and cyclists. Crossing it offers the perfect opportunity to slow the pace, reflect and take in sweeping views of the estuary, the castle and the surrounding landscape.
Enter via the A55 and you’ll pass through the Conwy Tunnel, crossing the estuary a little further upstream rather than over the bridges beside the castle. Either way, the sense of arrival is immediate and unmistakable, with enticing views unfolding even before you set foot on the cobbles or begin the climb of the castle walls.
Encircling the town, Conwy’s medieval walls remain among the most complete in Europe, offering a rare opportunity to walk an uninterrupted circuit around a historic settlement. Built in the late 13th Century under Edward I, the walls and castle are central to Conwy’s identity, shaping not only its skyline but its layout and sense of scale. From the elevated walkway, views stretch across rooftops, the estuary and the surrounding hills, reinforcing the town’s close relationship with both land and water.

Conwy has quietly built a reputation for its food offering, with a mix of relaxed cafés, traditional pubs and well-regarded restaurants spread throughout the town

Despite its relatively small size, Conwy supports a lively and varied high street. Independent shops sit alongside cafés, galleries and long-established businesses, giving the town a sense of continuity as well as creativity. Local produce, Welshmade goods and carefully curated homeware reflect a place that caters as much to residents as it does to visitors, while the compact layout makes it easy to explore on foot.
Conwy has quietly built a reputation for its food offering, with a mix of relaxed cafés, traditional pubs and well-regarded restaurants spread throughout the town. Menus often champion local ingredients, from fresh seafood landed nearby to Welsh lamb and artisan cheeses. Whether stopping in for a casual lunch or settling in for an evening meal, the emphasis is on quality and character rather than trend-led dining. The harbour provides a softer counterpoint to the town’s medieval stonework. Here, fishing boats bob as the estuary opens out towards the wider coastline. It’s an area that invites a slower pace: sit and take in views that shift with the tides, stop for a drink in one of the seafront pubs, or savour one of life’s simplest pleasures – a parcel of fish and chips balanced on your knee. For many, this quieter side of Conwy leaves the strongest impression.
One of Conwy’s most endearing curiosities is the Smallest House in Great Britain (The Quay House), tucked neatly against the town walls on the quayside. Painted a cheerful red, the former fisherman’s home measures just 72 inches wide and 122 inches high, yet this dinky residence was once occupied by 6-foot-3-inch Robert Jones until the 1900 before it was declared unfit for habitation. Visitors can step inside to see how life was lived within its remarkably compact proportions.
Beyond the castle and quay, Conwy rewards those who take time to explore within its medieval walls. Plas Mawr, an impeccably

preserved Elizabethan townhouse, offers a glimpse into the lives of the town’s wealthier residents in the 16th Century, while the narrow streets themselves reveal independent shops, cafés and hidden corners steeped in history.
Positioned between coast and mountains, Conwy works well as a base for exploring the wider area. The dramatic landscapes of Snowdonia lie just inland, while beaches and coastal paths are easily reached in the opposite direction. For walkers, cyclists and those keen to spend time outdoors, the town’s location offers flexibility; a place to return to after a day spent on the hills or by the sea.
While summer draws the largest crowds, Conwy retains a sense of life throughout the year. Seasonal events, markets and cultural festivals help maintain momentum beyond peak months, and the town’s compact nature makes it appealing even on quieter days. In the cooler seasons, its cafés, pubs and historic interiors provide welcome shelter, giving Conwy a year-round appeal that extends beyond tourism alone.
Rooted in history but far from static, Conwy balances heritage with everyday life in a way few towns manage so successfully. Its castle and walls may be the initial draw, but it’s the combination of setting, community and evolving character that encourages people to linger – and return. n

Trancio is an independent pizza and coffee business based in Conwy, founded by Billy, whose approach to food has been shaped by growing up alongside Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy. That upbringing instilled a respect for simplicity, consistency, and the belief that good food should be made properly and shared without fuss.
From an early age, food was central to daily life. Meals were routine, ingredients were seasonal, and quality mattered more than quantity. Those values continue to underpin Trancio today. Rather than chasing trends, the business focuses on well-made food, strong techniques, and carefully chosen ingredients.

At the heart of Trancio’s menu is pizza. Dough is fermented slowly to develop flavour and digestibility, toppings are balanced rather than overloaded, and each pizza is made to order. The offering is deliberately focused, allowing for attention to detail, consistency, and efficiency during service. Alongside pizza, Trancio serves freshly baked pastries and a concise menu designed to work throughout the day.
Coffee plays an equally important role. Trancio works closely with Heartland Coffee Roasters, using exclusive single origin beans developed specifically for Trancio, chosen for balance, sweetness, and reliability across espresso-based drinks.

Trancio will soon be introducing an exclusive single-origin coffee, Viani, offering customers a deeper insight into origin-specific flavour and quality. Viani is part of the Crecer sustainability programme, developed in Colombia. Crecer supports coffee producers to strengthen their farms socially, environmentally, and economically. Rather than applying a one-sizefits-all model, the programme works directly with farmers to identify the individual needs of their farms and develop long-term plans for meaningful, sustainable change. This aligns closely with Trancio’s commitment to thoughtful sourcing and long-term value rather than shortterm gain.
To further enhance the experience, Trancio also rotates guest coffees, giving customers the opportunity to explore different origins and flavour profiles. Staff are trained to ensure consistency and quality.
Trancio began in a small location and has grown steadily, with its flagship site now at 26 Castle Street in Conwy. It has built a loyal customer base of locals, families, and visitors and positioned itself as a place to sit, meet, and spend time. Community engagement remains central, with initiatives such as the Trancio run club combining wellbeing, routine, and social connection.

Trancio is open seven days a week from 8am - 4pm, with extended evening opening Thursday to Saturday until 10pm, and also operates Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at the Wild Horse Brewery. For further information please visit trancio.co.uk

As well as being an interesting day out, many of the major attractions in North Wales have an interesting story to tell to boot…

Llandudno was the home of Randolph Turpin, a former world middle-weight champion. Turpin was a resident of Llandudno from 1952 to 1966 and now, at the summit of the Great Orme, is a themed bar, restaurant and gift shop in memory of him.

Wrexham is home to the oldest international football stadium in the world. The Racecourse Ground has been used for various sports and activities over the years, and in the late 1880s it was even used for the National Eisteddfod. In 1877, the stadium saw the first international football game between Wales and Scotland. Today of course, it makes headlines due to its celebrity owners.
Rhos-on-Sea is home to the smallest chapel in the UK. Measuring just 11ft by 8ft, St Trillo’s can only seat six people. The chapel is dedicated to St Trillo, an early saint from the 6th Century with connections to the area. The altar stands over a natural spring, thought to have been an ancient holy well, from which water has been used for baptisms in the parish.

Bryn y Gwynt, a house on the racecourse in Pantasaph, has a great deal of history. The rear part of the house is said to have been the old betting office and a short walk across the fields brings you to the remains of the grandstand. Legend has it that a gentleman bet on a horse called Pickpocket and stated that if it won he would buy the building. It did, and so he did, and called it Pickpocket Hall. The original Pickpocket Hall is over 500 years old and the later extension dates back around 300 years.

Llandudno is home to the longest running show of Punch and Judy. For 150 years, and for over three generations, the seaside favourite has been run by the family of Jacqueline Millband-Codman after she inherited it from her great-grandfather who started the tradition in 1860. The current show on Llandudno Pier has a few contemporary twists and is half the duration, but roughly sticks to the traditional plot.
Cardigan Bay is home to the UK’s largest dolphin pod. They can be seen making their way up and down the North Wales coast all year round, but in order improve your chances of getting a glimpse, pop down during the summer when you can expect to see ten to 12 at once… 6

The longest place name in Europe belongs to a town in Anglesey. Try spelling (or pronouncing!) Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch was also used as a secret password in the in the cult 1968 Jane Fonda movie Barbarella – characters say it each time they want to gain entry into a secret HQ!

Anglesey’s Menai Suspension Bridge was the world’s longest bridge when it was built in 1826. It was also the first suspension bridge that had the ability to take heavy traffic. Today, despite being Grade I listed, it is still only one of two ways on and off the island. 12

The Tu Hwnt i’r Bont tea rooms in Llanrwst are located in a 15th Century courthouse on the banks of the River Conwy. Thanks to its ivy-clad façade and the pictureperfect location, Tu Hwnt i’r Bont is quite the photo opportunity, however the future of the building remains unknown as it is currently up for sale…

The London dry gin Bombay Sapphire uses ten ingredients: almond, lemon peel, liquorice, juniper berries, orris root, angelica, coriander, cassia, cubeb and grains of paradise. But did you know that purified water from Lake Vyrnwy is used to bring the strength down to 40%? 7 8 11 10 14
The yew tree in St Dygain’s Church in Llangernyw, Conwy, is believed to be either the second or third oldest living organism in the world. The churchyard gate holds a certificate from the Yew Tree Campaign in 2002, signed by David Bellamy, which states that «according to all the data we have to hand» the tree is dated to between 4,000 and 5,000 years old.
Conwy is home to the smallest house in Britain. Measuring just 10ft deep, 6ft wide and 10ft high the Quay House apparently once housed a 6’ 3” fisherman! It was occupied right up until May 1900, and ever since it has been visited and marvelled at by thousands of people from around the world.

Harlech Castle cost just £8,190 to build and, when it was completed in 1289, it was located right on the coast. The castle featured 108 steps that led straight into the sea – allowing for supplies to be delivered by ship. Fast-forward 737 years and the castle is now a mile or more inland – making all 108 steps rather redundant.
Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) is home to an endangered white fish called the Gwyniad. Found nowhere else on earth, the species was left behind at the end of the last ice age, and has been living in the deeper reaches of the lake for the last 10,000 years.

A very lucky couple called at one of our recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver sh coins. We paid them over £1600.00 just for the coins alone . They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected.
Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal households have a hidden treasure of old gold jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets d’art.
Why not get a free valuation from our expert at our roadshow. There is no queing and our expert will give you a one-on-one appraisal of the value of your treasured possessions in a private area, where there are no prying eyes, watching the process evolve.
If you like the valuation our expert will make you the same offer in cash which you can accept or decline at no cost to yourself

Sonia Goulding takes a walk in The Clwydian Range, and discovers a remarkable region that’s guaranteed to take your breath away…
The Clwydian Range is a line of heather-clad hills rising above the verdant Vale of Clwyd. Though modest in comparison with the lofty heights of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdonia), these hills have a presence entirely their own, shaped by wind, weather, and the steady rhythms of rural life. Walking here demands no heroic effort: the reward is a sense of freedom, found between the rich, deep earth and a never-ending sky.

One of the most remarkable features of the Clwydian Range is its chain of Iron Age hillforts, an extraordinary alignment of prehistoric sites, each claiming its own rounded summit. Archaeological finds, including Bronze Age axes and Roman coins, have revealed continuous activity in this region over thousands of years. In the late 19th Century, there was even a short-lived gold rush, sparked by the discovery of a gold nugget at the remains of a quarry near Moel Arthur. Today, you can trace the circular embankments with your feet, sense the labour required to shape them, and imagine the communities that once lived and worked here. Excavations have uncovered wooden structures, hearths, tools, and pottery, offering glimpses into the everyday lives of those who occupied these hills.
The Clwydian Range forms one of the most celebrated sections of the Offa’s Dyke long distance footpath, the 177-mile trail that follows this ancient earthwork dividing Wales and England. For many, the stretch over Moel Famau, Moel Arthur, and Penycloddiau is a highlight, a soaring ridge walk with no technical difficulty, but enormous aesthetic reward.
To walk this path is to sense the continuity of travel through the ages. Shepherds, drovers, farmers, and modern hikers alike have followed similar routes, drawn along the same elevation, and guided by the same landmarks.

At 554 metres, Moel Famau is the highest summit in the Clwydian Range. It is instantly recognisable from afar thanks to what is left of the Jubilee Tower, a once grand monument built in 1810 to celebrate the golden jubilee of George III. A storm in 1862 reduced much of it to ruin, its remains defining the summit we see today.
The climb to the top leads you through predominantly heather moorland, the haunt of black grouse and quietly grazing sheep. Your reward for the final stiff pull to the summit is a sweep of panoramic views, taking in the Berwyn Mountains, Eryri, the Irish Sea, and the low plains of Cheshire. On a clear day, even famous Liverpool landmarks can be seen, including the Anglican Cathedral and the Royal Liver Building.
Across the Clwydians, the shifting seasons bring transformation, each with its own character, its own rhythms, and its own wonders.

This season offers a glittering palette of white and silver. Frost lattices the land and snow covers the hills, huddling undisturbed in deep, sunless gullies. The air is sharp and biting, carrying the metallic smell of frozen earth and rusted bracken. On such days, the Clwydians feel wilder: wind sweeps across them unimpeded, and their quiet openness becomes an invitation to solitude.
Imperceptibly at first, spring arrives on the hills. Winter loosens its hold, and streams and rivers swell with bright, clear meltwater. Warmed by the sun, the air carries the distinctive coconut scent of the golden gorse, so prolific in this area. The valley is ethereal beneath a haze of spun-gold light, and new-born lambs make their debut, watched over by their attentive, chunnering mums.
The long days of summer follow, languorous and warm. Wildflowers grow in abundance, and bees and butterflies take their fill of the feast. Later in the season, the hills take on a living mantle of purples and pinks as the bell-shaped flowers of heather begin to bloom once more across the slopes.
Now, the valley is busy with the harvest, and hedgerows glint with the jewel-like colours of blackberries, elderberries, and haws, ripe and ready for the picking. The breeze brings woodsmoke from scattered farmsteads and cottages, and the delicious tang of tannin and toffee apples rises from the dark, damp earth and fallen leaves.

Cattle graze the lush pastures of the vale, heavy-footed and deliberate. Sheep range more widely, white shapes dotted across the hillsides, their grazing preventing scrub from overtaking the moorland and helping to maintain the open character of the uplands.
Below the hills, the Vale of Clwyd opens to a rich sweep of farmland and small towns and villages. Ruthin, with its handsome buildings and medieval roots, sits beneath the range, while Mold to the east acts as a cultural hub, home to the renowned Theatr Clwyd and weekly street markets. The village of Cilcain lies on the lower eastern slopes of Moel Famau, its lanes and fields shaped by centuries of hill farming. Life here continues to revolve around agriculture, the shop, church and chapel, and the White Horse pub. Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, at the southern end, centred around the ancient church of St Garmon, retains an atmosphere redolent of an older, rural Wales.
In these foothills, history feels layered: the old drovers’ roads once used to move livestock to market; the remnants of early agricultural terraces; the tumbled remains of animal enclosures. Forestry plantations patch the hillsides, and old

boundary stones appear on the ridgelines, silent markers of the passing of time.
The Clwydian Range is dramatic, though not in the challenging way of higher mountain country.
The drama is subtler here, found in the quicksilver light and wind-chased clouds, in shadows folded and refolded deep into the flanks of the hills, and in the lives lived across millennia on these ridges and slopes.
To wander in the Clwydians is to enter a landscape both guileless and quietly profound, a place of shifting, mercurial moods. Whatever your reason for walking here, whatever the season, you will come away with the feeling of having travelled in the company of old stories, told and retold, beneath wide, wind-scoured skies. n

Meet the Welsh women making midlife their most inspiring chapter yet…
Female group travel has become a key travel trend for 2025 and one group of Welsh women aged 50 and above have found a high adrenaline activity is the perfect ‘foil’ to some of the issues that come with ageing.
Visit Wales data shows the hashtag #GirlTrip has been viewed more than 8m times on TikTok in the last 120 days and #efoil has had 4M views over the same period.
Friends Lucy, Ffion, Renee and Harriet are all age 50 or over and list various motivations to their most recent adventure: hitting the stunning coastal Menai Strait in North Wales to trial eFoiling for the first time.
Efoiling is an adrenaline-souped but serene ride on a nearsilent electric surfboard that ‘flies’ above a hydrofoil wing, and these friends join a rising number of women in their fifties taking on new challenges and pushing their comfort zones as a way of navigating this sometimes disorientating, transitional time of life.
While reaching the forties and fifties is a milestone to celebrate, thanks to a combination of experience, wisdom and self-esteem, it can also bring all types of changes – empty nest syndrome, career shifts and leadership opportunities, or simply more ‘me’ time, which all provide opportunity to recalibrate and redefine.
The group of friends met through CrossFit and wild swimming in North Wales and were galvanised through online group workouts during the pandemic, set up to motivate and encourage one another and to celebrate each other’s ‘gains.’
The 9.15ers, (their group chat name after their 9.15am CrossFit class time) don’t exercise for aesthetic purposes, but because it’s confidence-building, transformative and empowering mentally and emotionally, as well as physically.
The group say they recognise the ‘hwyl’ (a Welsh word

describing a deep state of joy that comes from being totally immersed in the moment) in trying something entirely unfamiliar, of exploring new ambitions during this new phase of growth and self discovery.
As Harriet puts it, during her day at RibRide, Menai Bridge, “I’ve been out with friends today. We’re all a similar age – your body’s changing, life is changing, lifestyle is changing and some of those challenges can be really dispiriting. I didn’t think about any of those things today. We’re lucky to be living here in North Wales, where there is always a new adventure to discover. It provides a pretty perfect backdrop.”
Tom Ashwell, director at FoilRide, said: “Foiling can be learned in a couple of hours by anyone who can swim, has a token amount of balance and coordination. We know that women aged between 35-60 are 50% more likely to take a class to learn something new than men, and are more willing to spend money on experiences. In our own experience, women account for a decent amount of those making bookings with us and we can see that groups of women are more likely to get together to try something new.”
With female group travel and activities on the rise, Visit Wales has launched four new female-focussed itineraries with a focus on wellbeing, adventure and meaningful multi-generational get-togethers.
The four new itineraries feature a host of activities from jumping in seaweed baths and steaming beachfront barrel saunas in the stunning coastal landscapes of North Wales, to sampling freshly foraged seafood in Pembrokeshire restaurants, dancing in a silent disco at the national museum in the Welsh capital or indulging in a book club break in Hay on Wye. The itineraries are part of Visit Wales’ wider campaign inviting people to ‘feel the hwyl’ – a deep state of joy that comes from being totally immersed in the moment. n

I think we’re far enough away from Christmas now to talk about eating deer without upsetting too many fans of Dasher, Blitzen, Rudolph and co. I absolutely love venison. To this day, one of the best meals I ever had was a venison wellington, perfectly pink, at Portmeirion. I still remember carving it into ever-tinier slivers to prolong the experience as long as humanly possible.
As well as being beautifully rich and luxurious to eat, venison is also one of the healthiest of all meats. People who say ‘protein’ instead of ‘meat’ (they’ll probably be doing lunges while they say it) might like to know that venison is ‘a lowcalorie meat which is much leaner than beef and contains less saturated fat. It is rich in conjugated linoleic acid and contains high levels of iron and B vitamins.’ So there.
That’s according to the fine people at Cig Carw Llyn in
(Serves 4-6)
2 tbsp olive oil
1 small carrot
1 onion
2 garlic cloves
500g Cig Carw Llyn venison mince
2 tbsp tomato purée
2 fresh rosemary sprigs
1 bay leaf
200ml red wine
200ml chicken stock
1 tin chopped tomatoes
Salt and pepper
Pasta and Parmesan cheese to serve
Pwllheli, who keep a small but lovingly tended herd of fallow deer on their farm and specialise in venison of the highest order. Not only does venison have many health benefits for the lucky diner, but it has a positive effect on the environment too. As Cig Carw Llyn say, ‘deer are a natural part of our ecosystem and where numbers are appropriately managed they make a positive contribution to biodiversity. By creating suitable habitat on the farm for our small herd of beautiful fallow deer, we have enhanced the environment in a way that benefits many other species of flora and fauna, and results in a much lower carbon footprint than conventional livestock production.’
I’ve used their venison on a few occasions and each time it was utterly sublime. If you get hold of some of their venison mince, this recipe will fill several grateful tummies with ease; perfect food to warm you up as winter, mercifully, starts to fade away. n

When the time comes, bring your pasta to the boil – anelli or rigatoni, ideally – and drain it. Take the bay leaf and the rosemary sprigs out of the ragout and carefully stir in the pasta. Dish out to your drooling guests and hand them a block of Parmesan and a cheese grater.
Grab a good-sized frying pan and heat up a healthy slug of olive oil. Finely chop the onion and carrot and fry in the oil over a medium heat until the onions are golden. Sprinkle in some salt and add the chopped garlic and cook for another minute or so. Add the venison and whack up the heat. Stir it all together and break up the mince with a wooden spoon. Once it’s taken on a good colour (about five or six minutes), stir in the purée.
Now add the bay leaf, the rosemary, the tomatoes, the wine and the stock. Season with salt and pepper and stir everything together, bring to the boil then drop it all down to a simmer. Leave for an hour, stirring occasionally.

This February at Number 25 the cocktail of the month is the wonderful Clover Club. The thinking behind this is that, with Valentines Day creeping up, we are now in the month of love!
The Clover Club takes its name from a gentlemen’s club founded on 29th January 1882 by a group of prominent Philadelphia journalists, lawyers, and businessmen. The club quickly became known as an exclusive social circle where members would gather to dine, drink, and discuss politics, literature, and current affairs. From January 1883 until 1897, the group met every Thursday evening at Philadelphia’s prestigious Hotel Bellevue, a setting that perfectly reflected the sophistication associated with the cocktail that would later share its name.
Although the Clover Club cocktail is most closely associated with Philadelphia, its popularity soon spread beyond the city. By the turn of the 20th Century, it had found its way into some of America’s most fashionable bars. The first known printed reference to the cocktail appeared in 1901 in the New York press, where Michael Killacky, head wine man at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, included it in a list of summer drinks, complete with recipes. Its presence at such an iconic establishment cemented the Clover Club’s status as a drink of refinement and high society.
Despite its early popularity, the Clover Club gradually fell out of favour in the mid-20th Century. The use of raw egg white, once considered a mark of luxury, became less fashionable, and the cocktail was overshadowed by simpler, spirit forward drinks. However, with the rise of the modern cocktail renaissance, bartenders and historians began rediscovering classic recipes, and the Clover Club has since reclaimed its
place as a timeless and elegant cocktail, appreciated for both its rich history and its beautifully balanced flavour profile.
This cocktail is, classically, a Raspberry Gin Sour made using egg whites to give the romantic drink its signature foam. Just think elegance in a glass!
But this month we’re changing it up! When you think of February, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Your Valentine? Chocolates? Or maybe even chocolate covered strawberries… That’s why our version consists of fresh strawberries rather than raspberries, Monin’s strawberry syrup and a nice strong gin! The result is a sweet yet refreshing fruity taste as the zingy lemon juice balances beautifully with Gordons’ London Dry botanicals.
Our spec
50ml Gordons gin
25ml Lemon juice
10ml Strawberry syrup
1 Strawberry muddled
Former (or egg white)
Number 25 in Rhos-on-Sea is a bar and bistro that’s popular with locals and tourists alike. Featuring a cosy restaurant upstairs and a welcoming cocktail bar downstairs, it is the ideal venue, whatever the occasion…

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.
Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.
Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.
A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.
The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.
If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.
Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n
For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

A growing number of couples are living together and buying property without being married – but what happens when a relationship ends?

The lack of divorce proceedings might lead you to think it would be more simple, but depending on your circumstances there are still a range of potential complications to work through.
Katie Baker and Kelly Reynolds from Lanyon Bowdler, who have offices in Conwy and work with clients across North Wales, discuss the ins and outs of separation in a new episode of the firm’s podcast, The Legal Lounge.
They discuss how decisions are made over how assets are divided, and the importance of considering each person’s legal ownership of the property before the purchase is made.
Kelly Reynolds says: “As a family lawyer, my role is often to advise married couples on their rights when they go through a divorce, but it’s different for unmarried couples because they don’t have any automatic rights when their relationship comes to an end so it becomes a civil claim.
“With married couples there tends to be a starting point of assets being divided 50/50, depending on a multitude of factors like the length of marriage and age of the parties, but that’s not the case with unmarried couples.”
Katie Baker, who is in Lanyon Bowdler’s dispute resolution team based in Conwy, says: “There are different ways for a couple to own a property. Joint tenants is when two parties
effectively own the whole of the property together, so one person can’t dispose of it without the consent of the other.
“Then there’s tenants-in-common, when two or more parties will hold a property in separate shares, so they own a part of the property which they can dispose of as they see fit.
“There are also measures that can be put in place to provide clarity on how the property should be divided in the event of a separation such a making a declaration of trust or entering into a cohabitation agreement – steps which can act as an insurance policy for the parties.
“A lot of people don’t know these options exist and they can be really helpful in avoiding disagreements further down the line. It may not be the most romantic thing to think about when buying a house, but it can certainly save you heartache and potentially a lot of money in the long run.”
Katie adds: “It’s important to say that relationships can end amicably with a couple agreeing to either sell the house and split the proceeds, or one buying the other out, but obviously there are times when that’s just not possible.
“The things we look at when these matters come to us are how the property is held, as mentioned above, along with things like initial deposit contributions which can make a difference to who gets what.” n

After cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens of the eye is replaced with a clear artificial lens. In some people, months or years later, the thin membrane (capsule) that holds this lens can become cloudy. This is called Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO). It is sometimes called a “secondary cataract,” but it is not a new cataract. PCO can cause blurred vision, glare, difficulty reading, or problems seeing clearly again. The treatment for PCO is a quick and painless laser procedure called YAG capsulotomy. During this procedure, the eye doctor uses a special laser to make a small opening in the cloudy membrane, allowing light to pass through clearly again. It usually takes only a few minutes, does not involve surgery or stitches, and vision often improves within hours to days. Most people can return to normal activities the same day. northwaleseyespecialist.co.uk

Zoey Smith (pictured) of Baines Solicitors in Llandudno anticipates plenty of changes to family law this year.

The delays within the Court system have sparked a growing interest in NCDR. Moving into 2026, we are likely to see more parties seeking to resolve their differences outside of the Court system. For those who can afford to take that route it can be a good solution, however it poses problems for those who cannot afford to pay.
In 2026, significant reforms in family law are poised to reshape how families navigate legal challenges. The Government promised to address the law for cohabiting couples by “strengthening the rights and protections available to women in cohabiting couples.” Last year, the Government said they were considering broadening reform to bring consistency and fairness in relation to financial remedies.
Last year, the Government announced that it would be repealing the presumption that it is in a child’s best interests to have both parents involved in their lives as there were concerns it may lead to children being at risk from domestic violence.
Standish is a Supreme Court case that clarifies whether premarital assets are “matrimonial” or “non matrimonial”. The case of Standish highlights that even though an asset is brought into the marriage it will not automatically be assumed to be subject to the sharing principle. www.baines-law.uk

“I
It’s a phrase we hear almost daily. “I don’t know how you do your job.” We understand why people say it, however, each of our team truly love their job, because our work, for all its emotional weight, is rooted in purpose, privilege, and an unexpected amount of creativity and joy. Here’s what sits behind that phrase and why we not only can do this job, but why we’re proud to do it.
Most people don’t associate funeral directing with creativity, but it’s woven into almost everything we do:
J Designing service booklets unique to the person who has died.
J Curating music that feels like them.
J Choosing flowers, colours, themes and details that celebrate their personality.
J Shaping a ceremony that feels right – whether joyful, traditional, quirky or wonderfully simple.
These details are key, they’re expressions of someone’s identity, and their family wants to get it right.
We can’t take away grief, we can’t change what has happened but we can make the journey through it gentler. From the first phone call to the final goodbye, our role is to guide, support, explain and hold the weight so families don’t have to.
Someone Is Always Having a Worse Day
Funeral directing demands perspective more than anything. We walk with families through unimaginable loss, and some stories stay with us long after the day ends. When people say, “I couldn’t do your job,” they often mean they couldn’t face death so often, but we find that being able to support someone through such a difficult time gives perspective and a deep purpose.
A misunderstood part of our work is the practicality involved. When someone dies, regardless of the circumstances, they must be brought into our care safely, professionally and respectfully. Rain, snow, 3am, Christmas morning or the middle of a family meal, when the phone rings, we go. It can be physically demanding, logistically complex or very emotional, but it must be done correctly.

In some jobs, mistakes happen, in ours, they simply can’t. We handle legal documents, religious requirements, sensitive information, ceremonial elements and the care of the deceased all to exacting standards. There is no second chance to get a funeral right.
For all its challenges, this job offers a unique privilege: we see humanity at its most honest. We hear life stories in their rawest forms before they are spoken at the funeral. We sit among mourners, listening to memories that shaped a life. We laugh with families, cry with them, and witness the impact one person had on the world. For those of us who do, the privilege of being trusted with these stories is humbling, grounding, and deeply meaningful.
So when people say, “I don’t know how you do your job,” the truth is that we do it because it matters. Families need someone steady when the ground has shifted beneath them. Compassion, creativity and attention to detail can gently reshape a painful moment into one filled with meaning. And being trusted to walk with families through some of the hardest days of their lives is a privilege we never take lightly. That is why we do what we do, and why we are proud to do it well. n
