North Wales transforms into a true winter wonderland as the colder months settle in, wrapping its rugged mountains, tranquil lakes, and ancient castles in a soft, frosty glow. Snow-kissed peaks in Eryri shimmer beneath pale winter sunlight, while charming towns like Betws-y-Coed twinkle with festive lights reflected in icy rivers. Crisp coastal winds carry the scent of the sea along the Llŷn Peninsula and Anglesey, where dramatic cliffs meet quiet, windswept beaches. Whether wandering peaceful forest trails, exploring historic villages, or enjoying a bracing beach walk, winter in North Wales feels magical – calm, wild, and wonderfully enchanting.

This epic musical comes to Llandudno next month…

Michael Harrison, in association with Cameron Mackintosh, is delighted to announce the full casting for a major UK and Ireland tour of Miss Saigon. Coming to Venue Cymru in January, this fantastic production will star Seann Miley Moore (X Factor UK; Miss Saigon, International Tour; Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Australian Tour) reprising their celebrated role as The Engineer following acclaimed performances across an international tour which visited Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Singapore.
Boublil and Schönberg’s legendary musical is being reborn in this new UK production of Miss Saigon which welcomes brilliant new talent and recent Brit School graduate, Julianne Pundan, making her professional debut as Kim alongside exciting actor and singer Jack Kane (who has starred in Dragonheart Vengeance opposite Helena Bonham Carter, and Years And Years (BBC and HBO) with Rory Kinnear and Emma Thompson) as Chris.
Dom Hartley-Harris, recently seen in the West End as George Washington in Hamilton and on tour as Curtis Taylor Jr. in Dreamgirls, is John, Emily Langham (Singin’ in the Rain International Tour; Hello, Dolly! London Palladium; The Witches, National Theatre) is Ellen.
The cast is completed by Mikko Juan (Hulu /BBC iPlayer’s Better Things, Urinetown: The Musical) as Thuy and Ace who reached the semi-finals of BBC 1’s The Voice in 2024 as part of Sir Tom Jones’ team, as Gigi, Bea Ward as Alternate Kim, Aaron Teoh as Alternate for The Engineer, Jamil Abbasi, Aaron Aisoni, Daniel J Brian, Ann-Marie Craine, Ben Fenwick, Aaron Gonzales, Owen Johnston, Evita Khrime, Caleb Lagayan, Rayhan Lee, James Mateo-Salt, Shania Montevalde, Ryan Ocampo, Julius Sahr, Tonny Shim, Anh Koha Trần, Yiling Yang, Aimee Yue and Carmen Zhu.

“Since we first announced this new production, I have been genuinely delighted at the enthusiasm of the public determined not to Miss Saigon, with tickets flying out of the box office and several of the announced cities already nearly sold out,” explained Cameron Mackintosh. “We have now completed our search for a really fantastic cast, full of exciting discoveries, that will bring Boublil and Schönberg’s extraordinary, powerful musical back to thrilling life. I can’t wait to see Miss Saigon reborn again.”

Miss Saigon has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg with lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr. and Alain Boublil, adapted from the original French text by Alain Boublil, with additional lyrics by Michael Mahler and Orchestrations by William David Brohn.
In the last days of the Vietnam War, 17-year-old Kim is forced to work in a Saigon bar run by a notorious character known as The Engineer. There, she meets and falls in love with an American GI named Chris, but they are torn apart by the fall of Saigon. For three years, Kim goes on an epic journey of survival to find her way back to Chris, who has no idea he's fathered a son.
The soaring musical score features the hits songs; The Heat is On in Saigon, The Movie in My Mind, Last Night of the World and The American Dream. September 2024 marked 35 years since the show’s opening in the West End. n

Bethany Birch visits Colwyn Bay, and discovers a beach made for bracing winter walks…
Nestled on the North Wales coast, Colwyn Bay is a seaside resort town with a blend of classic Victorian charm and modern rejuvenation. Situated in Conwy County Borough, this community offers a refreshing seaside experience that has evolved over the years, making it a welcoming spot for families, visitors, and locals alike.
Colwyn Bay’s long sandy beach is one of its most recognisable features. Stretching for over three miles, it offers plenty of space to enjoy the fresh sea air, with a wide promenade running alongside it (part of National Cycle Route 5) making it ideal for walkers, joggers, and cyclists.
The fabulous beachfront has been dramatically reinvented with golden sand, meaning that you are guaranteed to be able to walk along it, no matter what the tide is up to. It also
offers easy access to both the train station and the town centre, where independent shops, restaurants and cafés create a laid-back, inclusive vibe. It’s a fantastic spot for a brisk winter walk to take in the views — or, for the brave, a bracing December dip!
Porth Eirias itself is a modern waterside development that was part of the Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project. It boasts a kiosk, a restaurant with sea views and a handy car park. This development highlights the town’s ongoing commitment to blending its seaside heritage with contemporary facilities, creating a vibrant hub for both residents and tourists.
Set just above the town is the Welsh Mountain Zoo, a familyfriendly attraction offering everything from snow leopards and Sumatran tigers to red pandas and Humboldt penguins. Overlooking the bay, the zoo combines conservation, education, and a stunning coastal setting, making it a favourite day out for locals and visitors alike, even in the quieter winter months.
Eirias Park, often described as “the park by the sea”, is another great feature of the area. It spans 50 acres of green space, sports facilities and leisure amenities in the heart of Colwyn Bay. It’s home to Colwyn Leisure Centre, with a swimming pool and fitness suite, as well as the Eirias Events Centre, which hosts everything from indoor sports to business conferences. also within the park, hosts international rugby matches and large-scale events throughout the year.
Outdoors, you’ll find 4G football pitches, a boating lake, a bowling green, and a children’s playground. While some of these attractions are quieter during winter, the park still draws visitors year-round, for its crisp sea-air walks and festive spirit.
Culture and entertainment also have their place in the town’s offering. Theatr Colwyn, Wales’ oldest working theatre and cinema, is a much-loved local institution with a busy programme of plays, films, and live performances. For larger productions, Venue Cymru in nearby Llandudno is just a short drive or train ride away, hosting everything from ballets to big-name comedians.
Shopping and dining in Colwyn Bay reflect the town’s welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. The town centre is home to a variety of independent shops, cafés, pubs, and restaurants. Whether you’re after a cosy café to warm up with a hot chocolate or a traditional pub to enjoy a roast dinner, Colwyn Bay offers plenty of choice. After a walk along the promenade or a day exploring local attractions, there’s nothing better than settling into a friendly local spot for some comfort food enjoyed with good company.
Colwyn Bay’s character is rooted in its history as a Victorian resort, still visible in its architecture, promenade, and piers. But it’s also a town that’s looking forward: investing in new attractions, improving public spaces, and making the most of its natural assets. This blend of old and new gives Colwyn Bay a unique appeal: the nostalgia of a traditional seaside break, with the energy of a town on the up.
Getting here is simple, too. Colwyn Bay sits just off the A55, making it easily accessible by car, while the town’s railway

station offers direct connections along the North Wales coast and beyond. It’s an ideal base for exploring the region, with Llandudno, Conwy, and Snowdonia National Park all within easy reach.
For those looking for a creative or community-driven experience, The Ink Gallery is a lovely stop. This welcoming art space doubles as a café, offering local artwork, creative workshops, and a cosy spot to relax with a slice of cake and a hot drink, making it the perfect winter retreat.
Whether you’re visiting for a day, enjoying a festive weekend break, or simply passing through on your way to Eryri, Colwyn Bay has plenty to offer in December (especially if you’re wrapped up warm with a flask of something hot). So why not embrace the fresh sea air, explore the park, browse the market stalls, and enjoy the best of coastal North Wales this Christmas! n

Sonia Goulding uncovers the spirit of Christmas in North Wales…

“Marley was dead, to begin with.”
With those six simple words, Charles Dickens sets the stage for a tale that has become as much a part of Christmas as tinsel and plum pudding: the story of a wicked, miserly old man whose shrivelled soul rejects the love and friendship of his fellow men in favour of the cold, dead glint of money – his torment. and ultimately his redemption – played out against a background of nightmarish supernatural visitations.
The telling of this life-affirming tale of how the ghosts of Past, Present and Future changed the outlook – and of course, the eventual path – of old Ebenezer Scrooge, has become a firmly established Christmas tradition. Read in books, played out on film, and performed on stages large and small across the land, its message of compassion and salvation echoes down the years, reminding us of the true spirit of the season.
Yet Dickens was not the only one to weave the ghostly with the festive at Christmas. Here in Wales, old customs endure, many reaching back to a time far beyond memory, caught somewhere between pagan ritual and early Christianity. As I found, some are weird, some are wonderful: all are fascinating.

The very act of singing is the living, breathing embodiment of the spirit of the Welsh people, an important expression of identity and heritage. Not for nothing is Wales known as the Land of Song, and it isn’t surprising to find that passion being given a voice in Plygain services across parts of the country on Christmas morning. The word Plygain stems from the Latin for ‘cock crow’, and indeed these services do take place in the cold, dark hours before dawn, the church or chapel brightly lit with candles to symbolise the coming of Christ as the Light of the World.
With its roots in medieval Wales, the rich, unaccompanied harmonies were originally performed by men alone, though nowadays women and mixed groups also take part. Each singer, or party, steps forward in turn, and no song may be repeated – quite a challenge in services that might continue for several hours!
Plygain services have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity since the mid-20th Century, with renewed interest in Welsh folk customs and traditional music bringing the practice back into the heart of community life. For information about a service near you, details are shared at Plygain.org, for all who wish to listen or take part.

The wren was regarded in European folklore as the King of Birds –a royal title that proved something of a curse…
An old folktale tells of a contest between the birds of the air, to see who could fly the highest, with the winner to be crowned ‘King of the Birds’. A powerful eagle had seemingly won the competition when a cunning wren, who had concealed himself in the eagle’s feathers, suddenly popped out and flew even higher, thereby winning the crown. The eagle was so incensed that he threw the little bird to the ground, breaking his tail in the process, which explains why, to this day, wrens have short tails.

Appearing to have its origins in a pagan custom connected with good luck, the tradition of Hunting the Wren formed part of the Winter Solstice celebrations. Unfortunately, it wasn’t so lucky for the poor bird. Hunted and captured by a gang of men, its fate was to be paraded in a cage, dead or alive, and hailed in song as ‘The King of the Birds’. Where the bird was killed, its death, marked by a ceremonial burial and accompanying dirge, celebrated the demise of winter. In later years, the wren came to represent the unpopular English kings and lords, prompting the subversive question from revellers: “Would you like to see the wren in a box?”– read ‘king’ for ‘wren’ and you’ll get the gist!
Although the literal hunting of a wren thankfully died out long ago in Wales, the tradition has survived in symbolic form in some areas, with the bird replaced by a potato stuck with feathers, and traditional ‘wren songs’ connected to the custom remembered and performed.

In equal parts eerie and exuberant, the Mari Lwyd blurs the line between the living and the spectral.
Her arrival is a startling sight: a real horse’s skull is festooned with bright ribbons, mounted on a tall pole, and draped in a white sheet that conceals the operator beneath. The hollow eye sockets often gleam with coloured baubles, and the wired jaws open and shut with an unnerving snapping sound. Accompanied by a lively troupe of musicians and the steady, rhythmic beat of a drum, this outlandish horse parades through the winter darkness, its procession lit by lanterns and laughter.
Traditionally appearing around New Year, the Mari Lwyd and her companions go from door to door – or more often nowadays, from pub to pub – challenging those inside to a pwnco: a witty exchange of rhyme, repartee and song between the revellers without, and those within. Following the verbal sparring, full of humour and wordplay, the Mari Lwyd is triumphantly admitted. The group ensures fun and merriment once entry is gained – with a few festive drinks, too!
The skeletal visitor, both comic and uncanny, presides over revelry that reaches back through centuries, an echo of older rites of midwinter and renewal, and a reminder of how myth and mischief once danced together at the turning of the year.
Like Scrooge’s ghosts, these most Welsh of customs connect past, present, and future. When the season comes around once more, we unwrap not only the cherished ornaments of years gone by, but the joy, love, and happiness they hold.
In these small, enduring customs, we glimpse what Dickens knew so well: that the heart of Christmas lies not in wealth, but in warmth; not in possession, but in presence; not in glittering baubles, but in memories of Christmases past, still alive in story, song, and laughter.

Here in Conwy, we look after each other. It’s who we are. We show up when times get tough. But with 43 people every day referred for mental health support in North Wales – we need our community.
With your help Conwy Mind can prevent mental health crisis before it starts. Your donations change the lives of 100 people per week.
That’s 100 support calls, mental health check-ups, counselling sessions and peer support activities that are helping people live well, build community and believe in a more positive future for themselves.
Your donation today will help Conwy Mind provide more young people’s sessions, more peer support activities and develop their digital services for when people need them most.
To support people like Emma*, who after attending a Conwy Mind group has started 1-1 mental health support; “Conwy Mind have been a saving grace for me when I’ve been struggling – they have been one of the only sources of support locally that have really made a difference. Without them, I wouldn’t be feeling as positive about moving forward, and I’ve been making future plans that I never would have considered in the past.”
As Conwy Mind launches its 100k Appeal, the charity explains the many ways in which you can help…

Our goal is simple: we’re preventing crisis and building community, but we can’t do it alone. You can be a lifeline for someone like Emma:
J £50 can provide a young person with a 1-1 support session.
J £500 can help to run a peer support group in the community for a month
J £1,000 can fund up to 200 support calls for when people need us most
Because here in Conwy, we look after people. Here in Conwy, we STOP CRISIS before it starts. It’s who we are.

For a twist on the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas, the 12 Days Wild challenge is the perfect way to connect with nature during the festive season. Have a look at these ideas to get you started, and sign up for the challenge!

Feed the birds
It might not be a partridge in a pear tree, but we have every reason to make sure our winter birds are well fed. Don’t forget to provide fresh water too, and make sure it hasn’t turned to ice if the temperature drops!
Reduce waste
Trying new recipes to use up those leftovers, buying less but spending more on local produce, and cutting back on single use plastics are great ways to lessen our impact on the planet.
Go for a winter walk
Exploring the great outdoors doesn’t need to be limited to Boxing Day – even a short walk in the fresh air, any day of the week, can help lift your spirits and clear your head!
Make a home for wildlife
Winter can be a tough time for wildlife looking for a safe space to overwinter. Leaving your garden ‘messy’ with piles of logs, leaves, and stones can provide a much-needed refuge for frogs, toads, insects, mammals like hedgehogs, and lots of other creatures.
Go stargazing
Clear winter nights bring the skies to life with an expanse of bright stars and constellations. North Wales is home to plenty of ‘dark skies’ with limited light pollution, making the show even more spectacular.
Take winter photos
Photography can be a great way to connect with nature on the other side of your lens, whether you’re capturing a breathtaking starling murmuration or getting up close to the frost on the ground. Share the joy by tagging @northwaleswildlifetrust in your photos on social media!

Sign up for The Wildlife Trusts’ free 12 Days Wild challenge. You’ll also receive a digital pack of goodies, including a wall chart to mark your progress, a word search, and lots of extra activity ideas! Available in English and Cymraeg.

older man who remembered the crash,” Nigel says. “That conversation began a lasting friendship with the people of Greece.”

German forces swept across Greece, his squadron was ordered
Among the family’s early fragments of information was a newspaper clipping: after the Corfu crash, Gerald had publicly proposed to his sweetheart, Susan Hall, through the press - charmingly lamenting that leaving her photograph behind had brought him bad luck. He ended the note with hope: “Tell her I’ll marry her once I’ve finished this job.”
Decades later, during the Covid pandemic, Nigel made the journey to Corfu himself. At the church museum of St. Prokopios in Kavos, he met Papa Spiros, who presented him with the actual compass recovered from Gerald’s plane. “To hold something my uncle once used was deeply moving,” Nigel reflects.
In 2023, Nigel travelled to Athens to visit the Allied War Cemetery at Phaleron, where Gerald is buried. Accompanied by his friend Kostas, he continued to Paramythia to stand on the soil from which his uncle took off for the last time.

Following the cemetery visit, Nigel and his Corfiot friend, Kostas, travelled to Paramythia, the village where Gerald boarded his final flight.
The research and emotions gathered over years eventually became Gerald’s War, Nigel’s book commemorating a young man’s sacrifice and the enduring connection between Greece and Britain. n

The House of Linen has the power to make your hospitality business offer the perfect first impression – time and time again. Julie Roberts explains…
Great guest experiences start long before check in. When a guest enters a hotel room, the first thing they notice isn’t the décor or the lighting, it’s the linen. Crisp bedding, fresh towels and flawless presentation set the tone for comfort and care. But behind every smooth sheet and perfectly folded towel is a professional laundry working with precision and dedication.
At The House of Linen, we are proud to be the quiet but essential partner helping hospitality businesses deliver exceptional first impressions every single day. For hotels, serviced apartments, spas and restaurants, dependable laundry service is vital. At The House of Linen, we don’t simply supply a service, we support your entire operation.
Our approach is built on three core principles, consistency, quality, reliability. When housekeeping teams are working to tight schedules, when guest numbers are high, when turnarounds must be seamless, our clients rely on us to deliver exactly what they need, exactly when they need it.
Because in hospitality, laundry delays don’t just disrupt workflow, they affect guest satisfaction and brand standards.
Behind the scenes at The House of Linen, every item undergoes a meticulous process. It involves:
J Advanced machines designed for precise textile care
J Strict hygiene procedures to prevent cross contamination
J Accurate chemical dosing for optimum whiteness and fabric longevity
J Continuous quality control checks
J Structured logistics that keep deliveries efficient and dependable
These details might be invisible to guests, but the results are not. They feel it the moment they settle into bed or wrap a towel around their shoulders.
To strengthen our service and support the growing demands of the hospitality sector, The House of Linen has recently

completed a full laundry refurbishment and re fit, a significant investment that marks an exciting new chapter for our business. This refurbishment improves capacity, speed and quality, giving our clients the confidence that their linen is treated with the highest level of professionalism and care.
We work with hospitality businesses of all sizes and styles, from boutique hotels to large venues with high turnover. What they all value is our dependability, our communication and our commitment to getting things right.
At The House of Linen, we don’t just wash linen, we protect your standards, support your team and help shape the guest experience you deliver. A crisp sheet may seem simple, but in hospitality it carries meaning. It tells guests they are welcome, cared for and staying somewhere that values quality.
At The House of Linen, we take pride in being the team behind that feeling. With our refurbished facility, state of the art technology and dedication to excellence, we continue to raise the standard for professional laundry service across the region. Because behind every perfect first impression is a partner who refuses to compromise.

Absolutely every single thing is taken care of in an Abbeyfield house – meaning that all residents have to do is sit back, relax, and focus on enjoying themselves…
Abbeyfield Colwyn Bay Society has been a registered charity since 1962 providing sheltered housing for independent older people. The first House in Llewelyn Road, Rhos-on-Sea was opened by Nell Street and friends in association with the founder of Abbeyfield Richard Carr-Gomm.
The Society now have three well-maintained Houses in Rhoson-Sea and Colwyn Bay.
Abbeyfield offer warm comfortable accommodation which include all bills, leaving residents to enjoy a stress-free life. All houses have refurbished conservatories that overlook the fabulous gardens where coffee is enjoyed daily. Current residents range from age 62 to 95 years, as Abbeyfield welcomes all ages.
So why do people choose Abbeyfield? Well, for various reasons ranging from not managing their current home, moving from elsewhere in the UK to be close to relatives or being unable to return home after a spell in hospital.
Gwenda has returned to North Wales after living in Holland, Ken has moved in after being unable to care for himself at home, Valerie, Shirley and Beryl moved to be near family and Marjella and Jim met on a train to North Wales and decided to move into the bungalow at Alexandra Road where they
proceeded to get married in 2023 at the age of 91 and 77. Of course we have local people like Marjorie and people who retire to North Wales.
The residents enjoy nutritious and well-presented meals daily, including full cooked lunch, high tea and provisions to make their own breakfast as we know some people like to sit in their pyjamas watching morning TV.
Residents have the comfort of knowing they have a community alarm to ensure their safety should they need it outside of staff hours. The only thing residents have to do is enjoy the rest of their life free from worry in the company of like-minded people.
Abbeyfield like to think they are the first stepping stone from leaving your own home and before you require care. If residents require care once they are living in Abbeyfield they can engage an outside agency.
Abbeyfield Colwyn Bay Society are happy for prospective residents to turn up initially unannounced at any of their houses, but do advise after that you make an appointment thereafter for a formal show round from Manager Anna Hamblett. n
For further information about Abbeyfield Colwyn Bay Society please email abbeyfieldcolwynbay@gmail.com

Llanfairpwll Distillery
At the gateway to Anglesey sits Llanfairpwll Distillery, one of North Wales’ most exciting independent distilleries — and one that’s now proudly carving out a name as a true Welsh rum producer. Known initially for its award-winning craft gins, the distillery has steadily shifted its focus toward rum, fermenting and distilling its own molasses-based spirit on site — a rarity in the UK and a point of pride for the team. The result is the fast-growing Anglesey Rum Co. range, including the popular Llanddwyn Spiced Rum, the deep and complex Skerries Dark Rum, and the newly launched South Stack Golden Rum, aged in small ex-bourbon casks. When I were a lad, back in the 1980s, we had a pub near Corwen. The harbingers of the festive season back then were the arrival of catering-sized packs of Christmas crackers, vacuum-packed individual Christmas puddings (that I could and would regularly eat in two mouthfuls), and brandy snaps. We’d serve ice cream inside brandy snap nests with winter berries –impossibly glamorous stuff in an era when a glass of orange juice was seen as an acceptable starter option.
business – literally; her mum and dad were helping out when I spoke to her.
The brandy snaps made here are the real deal and their provenance dates back over a century. “It’s been the same recipe since the 1800s,” Navenka told me. “They were typically sold at fairs and seaside stalls back in the Victorian age, and the recipe we use is the original recipe from Sharpe & Nickless in Derby. We make it in exactly the same way; even using the same equipment.”
One bite of a brandy snap and my head fills with the sounds of sleigh bells and Perry Como. Moreover, I’m delighted to say that the best brandy snaps that you can buy anywhere are made in North Wales; in Rhyl, specifically. Seek out The Brandy Snap Company and there you will find Navenka Holmes crafting baked goods aplenty. It’s a family-run

(Serves 4)
200mls double cream
1 heaped tbsp icing sugar
25mls Baileys Irish Cream (if there’s any still left in the house by Boxing Day!)
1 tsp instant coffee
4 brandy snap baskets
Cocoa powder
Dissolve the coffee in 1 tablespoon of boiled water. Mix that with the Baileys and the icing sugar, then whisk everything together with the double cream until it’s thickened into stiff peaks.
Scoop a healthy dollop of the cream into each brandy snap, then dust everything with a dash of cocoa powder.
And with that, I wish you and yours the best Christmas imaginable. See you in 2026!
Navenka’s passion for baking stretches back to her childhood. “My cousin actually owned this business and I used to make brandy snaps in her factory when I was a little girl. I started making wedding cakes and birthday cakes when I was a kid and then I got roped into making brandy snaps. I bought the company off my cousin nine years ago and now we’ve started making cookies and ginger biscuits too, expanding the range a little but we always try to keep to the traditional route.”
Brandy snaps might sound easy to make. They are essentially a mixture of flour, butter, syrup and ginger, but mystifyingly and somewhat disappointingly, no brandy. Getting the mixture just right however, and managing to shape them to your liking without shattering them or soldering the mix permanently to your baking tray takes a lot of practice and dedication. If you fancy making this month’s recipe – a combination of not much effort and big results, ideal for a Boxing Day treat – I’d recommend you put the rolling pin away and order your snaps from Navenka. www.thebrandysnapcompany.co.uk

If you want to know the secret to a great Christmas dinner, The Vale Grocer in Denbigh has the answer!
Isn’t it amazing how much time and energy we put into planning and preparing for Christmas, and especially Christmas dinner. Christmas and food are so closely entwined it can feel like there is a pressure to create something out of the ordinary on that one special day.
There are endless family discussions about whether to do a traditional turkey with the trimmings or something different. But one thing that perhaps doesn’t get talked about enough is how important the veg is to any meal. We’ll often spend a lot more time deciding on which wine or chocolates we want than we do thinking about our vegetables.
And yet at The Vale Grocer we know that great-tasting veg can be the thing that makes a real difference to the flavour and meal experience. Vegetables in the supermarket are generally grown to be as cheap as possible with a trade-off when it comes to taste, and also how they are grown (normally heavily sprayed to maximize yield).
At The Vale Grocer we buy organically certified produce from UK farms wherever possible, and from Europe for produce that is out of season in the UK. Our customers tell us it tastes great and lasts a long time because it’s so fresh. This is our secret to a great Christmas dinner!
Forget the stress of trying to buy your fresh produce at the supermarket when it’s crowded and hectic. However organised you are, there is always a feeling that you might have forgotten something and the temptation to buy extra because you don’t want to run out.

J Final date for ordering a Christmas Veg Box is Sunday Dec 7th 2025
J Order your Christmas Veg Box from The Vale Grocer veg shop in Denbigh. Address: The Vale Grocer, 9 Vale Park, Colomendy Industrial Est, Denbigh, LL16 5TA. Opening hours: Thurs & Fri 10-1, Sat 9-12.
J On Sat Dec 6th they host Denbigh Farmers Market (at the same address) from 9-12 so you can order your box as well as meeting lots of local and awardwinning food producers
J If you can’t make it to the shop, email them on eatyourgreens@thevalegrocer.co.uk and they can help organise a Christmas Veg Box for you
J Christmas Veg Boxes need to be collected from The Vale Grocer shop just before Christmas: Thurs 18th 10-1 / Fri 19th 10-1 / Sat 20th 9-12 / Mon 22nd 10-1 / Tues 23rd 10-1
By ordering one of our Christmas Veg Boxes you will ensure amazing veg for Christmas Day. The boxes are full of fresh, seasonal, great-tasting vegetables that will take you through Christmas whether you eat it all in one meal or over a few days.
We do the hard work for you, we’ve worked out what should go in each box and you just have to choose which size you want. Last Christmas we sold nearly 100 Christmas veg boxes and had overwhelmingly great feedback, with customers telling us that the box had a positive impact on their Christmas planning, preparation and/or experience. n

After the success of the Mulled Wine Manhattan of November, it only felt right to bring it back but in a bigger way for December. The Mulled Wine Manhattan was one of those drinks that started as an experiment but ended up becoming a customer favourite, not just because of the flavour, but because of the atmosphere it created. When I was on the bar and making the mulled wine reduction, the entire restaurant was filled with the warm, comforting smell of classic winter spices. Customers commented on it as soon as they walked through our doors. Giving Number 25 a truly festive feel, setting the tone for the whole evening, and it reminded me how powerful a single scent can be when it comes to creating the right ambience.
This time, during December, instead of blending the mulled wine into a cocktail, I've decided to serve the mulled wine itself as the special. Technically, mulled wine isn't considered a cocktail, but in practice it shares so many similarities with one that it makes no difference. It has a spirit base, uses complementary flavours layered deliberately, and it relies on balance just as much any of our mixed drinks do. Good mulled wine is crafted rather than improvised. The spices have to be measured, the sweetness needs to be controlled and the citrus has to brighten the drink without overwhelming the beverage. In many ways, it demands as much attention as any of the other drinks on our menu.
I will be using a recipe inspired by one I found by the Hairy

Bikers, which focuses on the approachable, warming flavours. To make it more keeping with our own style behind the bar, I’ll be adding cloves as well as subbing out the brandy for a touch of whiskey to align with the Manhattan. The two ingredients used bring added depth that I think is essential for the winter drink. They assist in rounding out the sweetness and give the mulled wine that unmistakable festive character. As it simmers, it releases a Christmassy fragrance that flows throughout the building and creates an inviting environment as soon as you enter – which is half the point of serving mulled wine.
The plan is to make it fresh throughout the month, keeping it warm and ready for anyone wanting something seasonal, comforting, and easy to drink. It might not fit the traditional idea of a cocktail, but it absolutely fits the spirit of our monthly specials: flavourful, warming, thoughtfully made, and perfect for the time of year. After the response to the Mulled Wine Manhattan, this feels like the natural next step. n
Paddy Dobbs is the bar manager at Number 25 in Rhos on Sea. This local bar and bistro is home to a cosy restaurant upstairs and a welcoming cocktail bar downstairs – making it the ideal venue, whatever the occasion.

Christmas Day means one thing – FIZZ! There’s nothing better than opening a few presents, getting the family round and cracking open a bottle or two of something bubbly. Whether you want to splash out on something French and fancy, or go for a bottle that makes a classic Bucks Fizz, here’s some ideas for you to make Christmas 2025 truly special.

Tanners Cava Brut, Traditional Method, Spain
£12.90
My go to party fizz, this is terrific on its own, with its crisp lime and apple fruit, but also works really well in a Bucks Fizz. Just add some freshly squeezed orange juice and that’s Christmas morning sorted!

Grounded Cru Sparkling Pinot Noir/ Chardonnay Brut, Adelaide Hills, Australia
£16.70
Soft and rounded, this is strawberries and cream in liquid form! A beautiful, delicate pink colour, this is a great all-rounder that will go down very well at parties over the festive period.
Vigna Senza Nome, Moscato d’Asti, “Braida”, Italy 2024
£16.70
If you want something sweet, this delicate, fragrant, grapey Moscato is just divine. Gently sparkling, with fresh acidity to balance out the sweetness, this will pair well with all the tins of sweet treats that are hanging around the house! Only 5.5% too, so ideal if you don’t want anything too strong.

Tanners Extra Réserve, Brut Champagne, France £67.00 MAGNUM
We are very proud of our stylish, elegant own label champagne, made for us for decades by a superb cooperative in Epernay called Beaumont de Crayères. Also available in bottles and halves, why wouldn’t you want a magnum to share on Christmas Day?
André Clouet Grande Réserve, Brut Champagne, Grand Cru à Bouzy, France £42.00 Grower champagnes offer fantastic value, and this is no exception. Made from 100% Pinot Noir in the Grand Cru vineyards of Bouzy, this is rich, biscuity and complex, yet fantastically drinkable.
Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé, Brut Champagne, France £62.00 on offer, was £80.00
It’s a classic! And with good reason too. This never fails to delight, the vivid black cherry and raspberry fruit is seductive, with bright acidity keeping it all in check, and making sure you want another sip. Treat yourself this year!
Thank you for reading all year, here’s to a happy and healthy 2026. Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!

Tim Morgan, Director at Hafren Furnishers, reflects on the past 60 years as the company continues the celebrations of its historic anniversary milestone.
Back in July 2025, Welsh independent furniture retailer Hafren Furnishers reached a significant moment in its long history. Established in 1965 by Mike Morgan, or better known as ‘Mike the Milk’ after offering small items of furniture direct from his milk float, the business has continued to evolve over the last six decades. Now run by son Tim, Hafren Furnishers still trades from its original Llanidloes site as its flagship store, as well as its new location in Aberystwyth, which opened three years ago.
Reflecting on its 60th anniversary milestone, Tim shared: “July 2025 officially marked the anniversary while exhibiting at the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells. We launched a 60th anniversary sale on the trade stand, which has continued instore and online throughout the year – offering discounts and savings across all products. “We’ve had a great response and it has been enjoyable reminiscing over the years with new and returning customers. We’ve also had the pleasure of shooting the Hafren Furnishers ’60-year journey’ for Heno S4C, which was great fun.”
Tim added that Hafren’s philosophy remains unchanged from 60 years ago: “We offer customers leading furniture brands at the best possible prices with exceptional service and free delivery. This has earnt Hafren an enviable reputation amongst its loyal customer base and within the furniture industry itself.
“It’s been a wonderful journey so far,” Tim continued. Reinvesting in our 70,000 sq ft flagship Llanidloes showroom and expanding the business to move with current trends –have been particular highlights over the years. “Furthermore, sourcing a second site for a showroom in Aberystwyth and opening in Autumn 2023 was another special moment in our history. “Despite challenging times for all retail sectors, with rising costs and economic change, our loyal customer base, enviable reputation and vast choice of furniture has enabled us to remain competitive.”
Looking ahead, Hafren will continue to do what it does best, put the customer first and to build its high reputation even
further. “We will continue to offer our customers the choice of quality furniture according to their requirements and budget,” adds Tim. “At the moment, we’re seeing natural and recyclable materials, eco conscious and sustainability become popular choices amongst our customers, while vintage vibes with a modern twist are also performing well.

“We’re very proud of our achievement. Mike Morgan, the founder who is sadly no longer with us, would be delighted. Success has stemmed from our knowledgeable and experienced staff, listening to our customers, offering them a positive customer experience and staying focused on what we do best.
“We have a wide range of gifts to suit family members or loved ones from lamps, cushions and cosy throws to pictures, mirrors and novelty doorstops. Meanwhile, the in-store Border café offers daily homemade specials in the Llanidloes store and there are refreshment facilities in the Aberystwyth store.
“We are closed 24th to 26th December and re-open at 9am 27th December for our 60th Anniversary Winter Sale. Everything will be reducedhundreds of products are in stock and available with FREE delivery in England and Wales. Here’s to another 60 years!” n

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.
Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.
Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.
A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.
The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.
If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.
Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n
For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

Katie has been telling her story – from Welsh-medium classrooms in Colwyn Bay to navigating the challenges of early career setbacks – as part of a podcast series by law firm, Lanyon Bowdler, where she works in the commercial dispute resolution department.
Recounting her childhood days, Katie says: “I went to a Welshmedium school in Colwyn Bay and the Welsh language was really growing then. I think it’s more common now to speak Welsh in school but not so much back then.
“I did all of my exams in Welsh, the only exception being that I really wanted to do psychology at A-Level which was taught at a different school. Until my early teens I was going to be a famous actress and singer, which my mother was not very happy about and didn’t see as a very serious career. She was delighted when in my mid-teens I suddenly developed an interest in pursuing a career in law and ended up going to Cardiff University to study law.
“I then completed my Legal Practice Course (LPC) in Chester which I enjoyed because it was much more practical and skills-based than the law degree.”
Like many of her colleagues, Katie’s first taste of law came through a school work experience placement at a local firm –in Katie’s case, in Colwyn Bay.
Following the completion of her LPC, the recession hit and it was a struggle to find a training contract – with many law firms cancelling or postponing their training programmes.
“It was a case of sending dozens and dozens of letters to all kinds of law firms, asking them to keep me in mind as and

when they started accepting trainees again,” she says.
“In the meantime I started working for the council in Conwy, and after a year I managed to get a paralegal position at a firm in Liverpool where I completed my training contract.”
Despite training as a personal injury solicitor, Katie is now a specialist in commercial dispute resolution – so what changed?
“I enjoyed working in personal injury, but I think there was always a part of me that wanted something a bit more diverse, and during my first maternity leave I applied for the role of a dispute resolution solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler’s Conwy office,” she says.
“I’m not someone who usually gets nervous at interviews, but I was certainly nervous for that interview – probably partly because I had to leave my six-month-old child with my husband who was waiting in the car!
“But the interview went really well and it was interesting to discuss the links between personal injury and dispute resolution – many of the legal principles are actually the same.
“I was delighted to be offered the job, and the original plan was to spend two days in the Conwy office and three in the Telford office – but then Covid hit and I ended up doing six months of remote training instead.
“That was five years ago now, and I have never looked back.” n

As 2025 draws to a close, many of us will pause to reflect on the year gone by; our achievements, our joys and for some, the heartbreaks. If you have suffered the loss of more than one person this year, this reflection can be particularly heavy. The end of the year and the festive season can magnify their absence, leaving empty chairs at the table and quiet corners in the home where laughter once lived. This article will explore some practical tips to navigate the double loss.
I know this feeling well. In April 2014, I lost my grandparents; Nanna Jean and Grandad Albert within a few weeks of each other. Nanna died unexpectedly, and Grandad, who had shared a life inseparably with her, followed just three days after her funeral. They were more than grandparents, they were a unit, a partnership full of love, humour and routine. Grandad did the shopping. Nanna managed the household budget. They had a wicked banter that could make anyone laugh and idolised their grandchildren. Their home was always warm and welcoming, a place where we spent countless summer holidays. Every Saturday, I’d meet them with my daughter and mum, we’d go shopping followed by a McDonald’s treat – Nanna always had a Fillet-O-Fish!
How to Navigate Double Loss as the Year Ends
Losing two people in quick succession, or even within the same year, is a grief like no other. It’s not just double sadness; it’s the disorientation of losing two anchors, two sources of love and stability. Sometimes grief layers itself, and before you have time to heal from the first loss, another wave hits. Here are some practical tips to deal with a double loss.
J Allow Yourself to Feel the Emotions
The year-end can intensify emotions, from sorrow to nostalgia, guilt to longing. Cry, reminisce or simply sit with your feelings. Grief is not linear, and feeling everything fully is part of the process.
J Lean on your Support Network
Family, friends or grief counsellors can provide solace and perspective. Sharing stories or memories, especially of how inseparable those you lost were can bring warmth even in sadness.
J Mark the End of the Year with Meaningful Rituals
Light a candle, create a memory album, plant a tree, or simply pause to share a story about them with loved ones. Rituals, even small ones, can help bridge the gap between absence and remembrance.

J Care for yourself Physically and Emotionally
Grief can be exhausting. Eat well, rest and move your body where possible. Holidays and end of year gatherings may feel overwhelming; allow yourself breaks without guilt.
J Celebrate their Legacy
Honour the love, laughter and routines they brought into your life. Cook a family recipe, continue a tradition, or pass on a story or joke that defined them. These acts keep their presence alive in your daily life.
A Gentle Reminder
Grief during the holidays or at the close of a year can feel like a shadow over celebration, but it’s also a reminder of the depth of love you’ve been privileged to experience. Healing isn’t about forgetting; it’s about learning to live with the absence while carrying their memory forward.
For anyone reflecting on the loss of two people in the same year, know this: your grief is valid, your love is enduring, and your memories are treasures that no passage of time can erase. As the year ends, allow yourself both sadness and gratitude for those who have left us and the moments they gave us to remember. n

ARIES (March 21st – April 20th)
You’ve got a lot on your plate this December, but don’t ignore your body’s signals. Rest early on is vital – pushing through tiredness won’t do you any favours. Prioritise good sleep and grounding meals mid-month. The New Moon on the 20th is ideal for a style refresh or setting health goals. As the festive rush peaks, make time for movement and mindfulness to stay centred. You’ll finish the year on stronger footing.
TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st)
This month calls for steady rhythms and small comforts. If things feel scattered at the start, reduce screen time and keep things simple. Around the 13th, emotions could lead you to reach for quick fixes – opt for nourishing rather than numbing. The New Moon brings a chance to gently shift habits that no longer serve you. Quiet time in nature will help recharge your batteries before the year closes.
GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st)
You’re full of energy as the month opens, but don’t overdo it. That buzz could turn to burnout if you’re not careful. Limit online chatter and stick to a manageable social calendar. Christmas temptations might hit your tummy hard, so be mindful of what you eat and drink. Find the joy in moderation – you’ll enjoy the season more if you pace yourself. Rest is every bit as important as activity now..
CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd)
You’re feeling the festive pressure and keen to make things just right – but perfection can wait. Take some slow breaths and ease off the expectations. A quieter moment mid-month helps you notice what’s sapping your energy. Small shifts to your daily habits bring long-lasting peace. Try gentle movement and spend time with those who truly lift you. A restful close to the year will do you the world of good.
LEO (July 24th – August 23rd)
You’re keen to balance festive cheer with everything else on your to-do list. If some traditions no longer spark joy, don’t be afraid to mix things up. Your heart – and your heart rate – deserve attention: a good walk or dance session will help keep things ticking nicely. Mid-December may bring a bit of burnout, so carve out space to rest, eat well and share some laughs. You’ll shine brighter for it..
VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd)
This month calls for you to step back and slow down, especially around the Full Moon. You’re sensitive to your surroundings, so be selective with who and what you engage with. Let go of anything that’s outdated – whether it’s habits or social obligations. Choose simple pleasures and healthy routines that feel supportive. When you’re grounded, you’ll enjoy Christmas more and find strength in small moments of joy.
LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd)
Early December feels a bit chaotic – so much to do, so little time. The trick is to take things one step at a time. Don’t skip meals or sacrifice rest for the sake of your list. Around mid-month, emotions may ripple through your appetite and energy levels. Create little havens of calm – a tidy space, a warm bath, a quiet walk. Later in the month, build in one useful new habit. Think simple and sustainable.
SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd)
The month opens on a tense note, but don’t let it take over. A mix of warm baths, early nights and comfort food will work wonders. Your instincts are strong, so pay attention to what your body’s trying to tell you. By mid-month, things will settle and you’ll feel more confident about where you’re heading. With clarity comes commitment, and you’re ready to stick with the choices that matter most.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st)
December starts in classic Sagittarian style – lively, social and full of movement. But you’ll need to pace yourself. As the month progresses, you’ll be more focused and intentional. The New Moon in your sign on the 20th is your cue for a fresh start – ideal for setting bold but balanced goals. Try gentle exercise and light, nourishing meals to support your system. Make time for fun, but don’t forget to relax.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th)
You’re craving quiet before the celebrations begin. Early December is best spent behind the scenes, catching your breath. Sleep may be disrupted by festive pressures, so aim for slow mornings and early nights. Work is buzzing, but family time matters too. The New Moon brings a personal reset – trust your intuition. As the Sun enters your sign, your energy picks up and you're ready to head into the new year with purpose..
AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th)
You’ve been tuned into everyone else’s needs, but what about your own? The Full Moon highlights patterns of stress that are overdue for change. Be gentle with your nervous system – avoid overstimulation and find time to switch off. Mindful walks and digital breaks will do wonders. As the year draws to a close, it’s time to lay the groundwork for habits that last. Rest, calm, and connection are your best allies now.

PISCES (February 20th – March 20th)
Emotions might bubble up early in the month, especially in close relationships. Try not to overreact – space and silence can be healing. Festive events will lift your spirits, but take care not to overdo it. Mid-month brings insight into how you handle pressure. The New Moon offers a beautiful opening for new self-care practices. As Capricorn season arrives, you’ll feel more grounded and better prepared for what’s ahead.
