Ice cream. I scream, you scream, we all scream for it, and who can blame us? On a sweltering August day, ideally near the coast, time suddenly stands still when you have a cone full of chilled ice cream in your hands. If you’re taking a break in North Wales this month, you will find yourself entirely spoiled by the rich variety of home-grown ice creams available here. We might well thank Italy for the profusion of ice cream parlours in the area. Forte’s and Parisella’s, two ice cream icons in Conwy and Llandudno, have been cooling down over-baked tourists since the 1950s and both were set up by Italian families who had made a home in North Wales and rewarded us with their gelato recipes from the old country. When I was younger, you’d have to content yourself with a Mr Whippy with a Flake stuck in it – or a Mini Milk if you’d blown most of your pocket money in the arcades. Nowadays, making proper ice cream is a serious business and there are an infinite variety of styles and flavours to choose from. Rare is the town in North Wales that doesn’t have at least one super-snazzy ice cream bar. The award-winning Red Boat Ice Cream in Beaumaris has

Handful of chopped mint leaves 4 passion fruit, emptied

4 tablespoons chopped toasted hazelnuts 250 mls whipped cream 4 meringue nests

in a bowl with the sugar, lemon juice and mint. Cling film and leave in the fridge for a few hours. Remove some of the strawberries and keep aside. Add all the other ingredients to the main bowl bar the meringues and mix them up together. Finally break the meringues into the bowl and slowly turn the mixture. Take a ring mould and half

Whenever I go away, it always turns into a bit of a Busman’s Holiday. I’m a sucker for a visit to a local vineyard, brewery or distillery that I haven’t visited before, or even one I’ve been to many times before to see if

anything has changed. It must drive my wife nuts, but she’s very happy

to pack me off to the nearest spot that has something fermenting away so she can have a bit of peace and quiet for an hour or so!

I’m sure a few people will be venturing to warmer climes in August, or

even to other parts of the UK and Ireland. If you’re about, look for what the locals are drinking, and see if there are local producers. There are

some great places to visit while you’re out and about; there really is no substitute for chatting to the people who make these delicious drinks and seeing how they are made, and where they’re grown.
