Well welcome to April! April is always an exciting month due to the clocks having just gone forward, and a plethora of Bank Holiday weekends to look forward to! It’s also the month that the daffs are in full bloom, and that spring lambs can be seen bouncing all over the countryside.

Sheep farming has shaped the landscape and culture of North Wales for hundreds of years, and on page 27 Sonia Goulding explains what this means for the region as a whole, as well as its hard-working farmers.

For the majority of us however April means longer days, school holidays and family days out. We have got a huge choice of attractions here in North Wales, and we list the very best of them on page 47. Founded in 1201 by Madog ap Gruffydd Maelor, Llangollen’s Valle Crucis Abbey was the last Cistercian monastery to be built in Wales. Ruthin Exploring

Bethany Birch visits Ruthin, and discovers a town that is small in size, but rich in history…

Close to the rolling folds of the Vale of Clwyd, Ruthin is a market town that wears its history lightly but unmistakably. Pronounced Rith-in, its name comes from rhudd (deep red) and din (fort) – a reference to the red sandstone castle that still rises above the rooftops. Founded in the 13th Century, the town has grown around its fortress walls, yet its medieval footprint remains reassuringly clear beneath your feet.

St Peter’s Square forms the heart of it all. Timber-framed buildings lean at gentle angles, their black-and-white façades striped like humbugs and softened by centuries of weather. Look closer and you’ll notice something else: espresso machines whirring behind leaded windows, independent boutiques tucked into buildings older than the countries they trade with. In Ruthin, the past isn’t preserved behind ropes – it’s lived in. Old beams frame new ideas, and that quiet contrast gives the town its pulse.

History runs deep here. Nantclwyd y Dre, thought to be one of the oldest surviving townhouses in Wales, gathers nearly six centuries beneath its timbered frame. Its rooms unfold gradually, the medieval hall giving way to Georgian symmetry,

each layer revealing how domestic life quietly evolved. Outside, the gardens feel gently enclosed and unhurried, the sort of place where time loosens its grip. After its winter pause, the house reopens on 28th March, ready once again for curious minds and wandering footsteps.

Today, while guests can stay within its historic walls, visitors are still free to wander the expansive grounds and woodland walks. Keep an eye out for the castle’s resident peacocks, strutting along the lawns or showing off their vibrant tails among the trees. With ample free parking (100 spaces), it’s an easy starting point for a day exploring Ruthin’s streets and scenery.

A short stroll away stands Ruthin Gaol, an imposing Victorian prison built in Pentonville style. Now a museum, its stark cells and exercise yards offer a sobering glimpse into 19th Century justice. Just across town, St Peter’s Church provides a quieter kind of reflection. With origins dating back to the 14th Century, its impressive tower and intricate memorials tell stories of the town’s past residents, from nobility to everyday parishioners.

Beyond its historic core, Ruthin’s setting is equally stirring. Close to the Clwydian Range, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the town is framed by rolling hills and green valleys that shift colour with the seasons. Footpaths wind out of town and into open countryside, offering sweeping views across patchwork farmland and heather-clad slopes. Whether it’s a gentle riverside ramble or a longer hike along Offa’s Dyke Path, Ruthin serves as a welcoming gateway to North Wales’ wilder side.

Yet for all its age, Ruthin never feels stuck in the past or preserved under glass. Independent shops and galleries continue to settle into ancient buildings, their wares framed by crooked beams. Craftspeople and creatives have found a natural home here, quietly bringing energy to the old streets.

July 25th 2008 saw the re-opening of Ruthin Craft Centre, one of the UK’s leading centres for applied arts. The centre boasts three galleries that show the best in contemporary applied art and craft – two for displaying the best contemporary craft

from Wales and around the world, the other being a collections gallery and a retail gallery space. There are also studios for artists, educational and residency facilities, a café and a tourist information cultural gateway. The whole complex is set round a courtyard that acts as a focal point and outdoor social space making it the ideal meeting point for tourists and creatives alike.

And for those of us (myself included) who love nothing more than an aimless mooch around somewhere new, Ruthin is a gift. It’s a town that invites wandering without agenda or hurry. There’s pleasure in drifting through its cobbled side streets, pausing to peer into gallery windows, settling with a mug of coffee to watch the square unfold. It encourages you to slow down. To notice. To linger over the strange and the wonderful.

I rarely visit a place without my camera slung over one shoulder and a notebook tucked into my bag, and Ruthin rewards that kind of curiosity. Inspiration seems to gather easily here; in crooked beams and red sandstone walls, in snippets of conversation overheard in cafés, in the sweep of hills beyond the rooftops. A short local walk, a bench in the square, a picnic blanket unfurled beneath lengthening daylight – sometimes that’s all it takes to understand a place properly.

Walkable and quietly characterful, Ruthin reveals itself gradually. Come for the castle, stay for the stories, and leave with the feeling you’ve stepped somewhere just slightly out of time – where deep red stone, leaning timbers and rolling Welsh hills combine to create something gently, enduringly magical n

In the heart of our community, a quiet crisis is unfolding. Every single day, 43 people across North Wales reach out for mental health support – a number that continues to climb as more of our neighbours, colleagues, and friends find themselves struggling.

So, this May, Conwy Mind are asking you: can you spare just 43 minutes to help meet that demand?

The Challenge: 10 Teams, One Mission

Local charity Conwy Mind is launching an all-inclusive movement challenge, and they are looking for 10 “champion teams” to lead the charge. Whether you’re a local business looking for a meaningful team-building exercise, a sports club with energy to burn, or just a group of mates who want to make a difference, the goal is simple –move for 43 minutes.

You can walk, run, swim, cycle, play a match or even host a 43-minute dance-off in the office. How you move is up to you; the vital part is the “why” behind the minutes.

Moving for the “Six”

While the 43 minutes represent the daily local demand for help, there is a more somber statistic at the heart of this campaign. In Wales, six men take their own lives every single week.

As part of the challenge, participants are asked to dedicate six specific minutes of their movement to honour those lost and to reflect on the urgent need for intervention. It is a powerful reminder that these aren’t just numbers, they are our fathers, sons, and brothers. By raising funds, these teams are helping Conwy Mind stop the crisis before it starts through school programs, support calls, and local community hubs that offer life changing intervention when it’s needed most.

Lamb Tales: A New Season

Lambing season is a busy yet rewarding time here in North

Wales, as Sonia Goulding discovers…

Our frosted hills and fields, for so long hushed in a quiet stillness of waiting, now sound with the tremulous bleating of newborn lambs and the answering calls of their attentive mothers. Snowdrops have given way to bright drifts of daffodils, daylight stretches into lengthening hours, and winter begins to loosen its grip on the land.

Yet for those who work here, these first welcome signs of spring carry weight as well as wonder. Lambing marks the beginning of a new farming cycle. This is the busiest period in the calendar for sheep farmers, signalling weeks of early starts, late nights, and back-breaking work, a time when hope and anxiety are felt in equal measure.

Sheep Farming in North Wales

Sheep farming has shaped the landscape and culture of North Wales for hundreds of years. From the rolling pastureland of the coastal plains, through lush valleys, to the rugged upland farms of Eryri and the Clwydian Hills (Bryniau Clwyd), sheep are integral to the very fabric of the country, economically, visually, and historically. Many farms are family run, with hard-won knowledge and wisdom passed down through the generations.

Great care is taken to monitor the pregnant ewes as they approach lambing time. Most commercial sheep farmers in the UK have their ewes scanned, especially those with lowland, or more intensively managed, flocks. This allows farmers to

know how many lambs each ewe is carrying, assisting with feed planning, monitoring for multiple births, and reducing lamb losses.

However, in more traditional hill or upland farms, like those in parts of North Wales, some farmers still rely on decades of experience, reading subtle changes in behaviour and movement, especially where terrain makes scanning logistically difficult, or where flocks are smaller and shepherds know their ewes well. Where there are concerns about a ewe’s wellbeing, she may be brought into a sheltered pen so she can be closely observed and helped if necessary. Elsewhere, lambing takes place out on the hillsides, where farmers and shepherds make regular rounds, often in harsh weather, to ensure all is well.

First Moments

The moments immediately after birth are crucial. A ewe will instinctively call to her lamb, urging it to get up and feed. She licks her youngster thoroughly, learning its unique scent, vital in allowing her to recognise her own lamb within the wider body of the flock. This vigorous licking also stimulates the lamb’s circulation, warming its small body into life. It also encourages milk flow in the ewe, ensuring that her youngster receives its first, most vital nourishment: colostrum. Rich and golden, this first milk is not simply food, but protection, dense with antibodies and nutrients, strengthening the lamb’s fragile body and helping to guard it against disease in its earliest hours.

Occasionally, however, complications during birth may leave a lamb orphaned, or a ewe might reject her lamb. When this happens, farmers step in as surrogate carers. Lambs are bottle-fed in the shelter of a barn, quickly learning to recognise the sound of footsteps, the creak of a door, or the familiar rattle of a feed bucket.

Communication, Protection and Independence

Ewes communicate with their young in low, rhythmic murmurs – soft “mmmeh… mmmeh…” and “errr-mm…” sounds that rise from the throat rather than the chest. These warm, intimate calls carry a soothing quality, used to reassure, guide, and maintain contact with the lambs. To them, it is a signature voice, instantly recognisable, calm, familiar, safe. Over greater distances, the call strengthens, becoming clearer and more resonant, a firmer, strident “maaa-eh” that carries across the field.

Ewes are fiercely protective, keeping their lambs close and responding instantly to any perceived threat. But lambs grow quickly, and within days they begin to test their legs, leaping,

bounding, and running with sudden bursts of exuberant energy. Curiosity soon outweighs caution, and they venture further from their mothers, exploring their world with tentative – and sometimes misplaced – confidence. Despite these early shows of independence, the bond remains strong. A distressed or lost lamb will bleat loudly, and its mother will answer in return, calling it back to safety.

As the weeks pass, the intensity of lambing gradually eases. Pens empty and fields fill. The rush of sleepless nights fades, replaced by steady routine and measured checks. For farmers, this is a period of quiet reflection, a moment to catch their breath and take stock of the season.

The Never-Ending Cycle

The sight of newborn lambs is more than a sign that spring has finally arrived. These small creatures, finding their unsteady feet on cold, wet grass, belong to a way of life rooted in the valleys and uplands of North Wales for centuries, a life shaped by stone walls and field boundaries, by wind-scoured ridges and sheltered folds of land.

They are born into a landscape known intimately by the men and women who work it: people who can read the weather in the sky, whose hands are lined and worn by years of labour and toil. Their days begin early and end late, measured not by clocks but by light and dark, and the rhythms of the seasons. Lambing time may be a renewal of flocks and of livelihoods, but it is also something deeper: a re-affirmation of the enduring relationship between people, their animals, and the land they share. n

What is your name and what is the name of your fundraising team?

My name is Mark Connelly and I’m the fundraising manager at St Kentigern Hospice. Our team consists of: Alwyn who is our corporate fundraiser, Rhian who is a community fundraiser, Courtney who is a community fundraiser and Charlotte who is our lottery, grants and legacies officer. Together, we are the St Kentigern Fundraising Team, a small but dedicated team working to generate the income that keeps the hospice running.

What is your team responsible for within the organisation?

We are responsible for bringing in the funds that allow the hospice to provide its care free of charge. We deliver a wide range of fundraising activity, including organising our own events, supporting community fundraising, working with Hospice Champions, managing support groups, developing corporate partnerships, and generating income through grants, legacies and our hospice lottery.

What makes your fundraising work unique or impactful?

What makes our work truly impactful is the direct link between fundraising and patient care. Every pound raised has a real, visible impact, whether that’s funding a day of care, supporting families, or enhancing patient facilities. A recent example is a grant secured by our team that funded a stateof-the-art spa bath for patients, which has made a meaningful difference to their comfort and wellbeing.

What motivates you and your team in your fundraising efforts?

We’re motivated by the people we support and the stories we hear every day. Knowing that the funds we raise directly enable care for patients and families in our community keeps us focused and driven. It’s not just about targets; it’s about making sure the hospice is there when people need it most.

What achievement or milestone are you most proud of as a team?

As a small team, we’re proud of the scale and breadth of what we deliver. From growing our community engagement and strengthening corporate partnerships, to delivering a full programme of events and securing vital grant funding, we’ve built a strong and resilient fundraising operation that continues to grow.

What project, campaign, or event are you currently working on that people should know about?

We’re currently delivering a full programme of fundraising

events. There’s always something happening, all aimed at sustaining and growing the income needed to support our services. This includes exciting events such as our Colour Run on 20th June, which promises to bring our community together for a fun and vibrant day while raising vital funds for the hospice. One of the biggest highlights this year is our flagship event, A Grand Night for Singing, taking place on Saturday 26th September at the Rhyl Pavilion Theatre. This is one of the most ambitious events the hospice has ever delivered, bringing together the incredible the Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band and Cor Godre’r Aran male voice choir for what promises to be a truly unforgettable evening of music. There are lots of ways to get involved. We were Llandudno’s first Boutique accommodation, established in 2004. We stood out because we were very different to the old concept of a traditional seaside B&B. We were the first with wifi, had our own professional website and were very stylishly unique. Everything was personally designed and decorated, and we targeted a more professional and higher income demographic, as well as business users. We still retain the element of being stylishly unique and are continually updating our interiors.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

Our best business advice was ‘to have a Unique Selling Proposition’ and to dare to be different…

And what advice would you pass on to young entrepreneurs?

My advice to young entrepreneurs would be start as young as possible and don’t be afraid to have failures but learn and continue to strive on. The later you leave it, the more responsibilities you have and failure is not an option.

What keeps you motivated?

Our biggest motivation is to maintain our lifestyle and

continue being relevant. Under the current economic climate, survival is always a factor. Seeing customers leave happy is also very satisfying.

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

Our business started after the birth of our daughter Grace. She arrived premature after 4 miscarriages. We decided that we would like her to be brought up in a beautiful location and we thought that a B&B would be the ideal lifestyle option and allow us lots of family time and a control of our working life.

What do you love about your job?

We love our job because we are our own bosses and this allows us greater flexibility than being employed. It’s great to be able to have the time to follow our own passions and interests. We love the fact that our daughter has returned from university to be our resident General Manager and we get to see her lots.

We have been lucky to have received lots of national press coverage over the years. Our proudest achievements were making the finalists of the best place to stay in Wales for two consecutive years in The National Tourism Awards.

Seeing the transformation in my clients keeps me motivated. The best thing about owning a business is that I can help people in so many ways, using all my years of experience. Also, unlike large institutions, I have the flexibility to bring in new treatments and equipment as soon as I know they will benefit my clients.

What do you love about your job?

I love working with complex cases and helping people who feel they have run out of options. I’m Seona Loveman, and I own Imperial Hall – an outdoor clothing and accessory store in Aberdyfi.

What’s makes your business stand out from the crowd?

Location, location, location. Imperial Hall is central in our pretty village. We offer clothing, footwear and accessories to suit most visitors here to enjoy the outdoors of Aberdyfi. We’ve ensured we don’t compete directly with other retail stores too much, so we keep a broad range and choice for all our locals and leisure shoppers.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

Be fair, dare to be different, but read the room. Listen to common phrases too, for example, here in Aberdyfi it is ‘microclimate’. In Aberdyfi it can often be sunny and warm whilst raining five miles down the road inland, so people don’t always bring clothing for all weathers.

And what advice would you pass on to young entrepreneurs?

Goodness, where do you start… Do your research, know the law. Don’t ‘fake it until you make it’ as the people you really need to impress, will know. Value loyal staff. Be prepared to work an 80-hour week and learn from every minute. Do every job yourself and do it well, before delegating. With early modest success don’t be flash, re-invest. Seek gaps in the market and if your idea or product isn’t out there, then is it because that gap exists? Or no because one needs it?! Think like Peter Jones (Dragon’s Den) not Del Boy Trotter…!

What keeps you motivated?

Growing a business, bringing new things to people to enhance their lives and in our case, their experience whilst on holiday in Aberdyfi. We talk to visitors a good deal, we own the Freehouse Pub on the seafront, so see thousands of people – chatting with a cold beer and an amazing view is

the best market research, ever. By ‘we’ I refer to my husband Gary, his support is unwavering and fuels my motivation.

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

Pride in the final result; if you take all the challenges and responsibilities on your shoulders, you deserve all the praise for the right result. And it’s your call to keep ahead – ‘if you snooze you lose’.

What do you love about your job?

People; finding the right products for the right people who share our love of the outdoors and simple pleasures in this timeless seaside village. And it’s not just visitors; the welldesigned long sleeves on a Ridgeline Monsoon jacket (3 season) are great on a beach walk with the dog, but they’re essential if you’re a farmer herding your sheep on a quadbike in the hills!

What business achievement are you most proud of?

The building conversion! I love a project. Imperial Hall was built as a chapel in 1828, so to strip off the ‘modernisation’ of the 70’s & 80’s to find amazing original features to showcase was a genuine joy. Going back 27 years, I built from scratch and grew a Stable Yard into a principal BHS/PC Equestrian Centre – that warmed the heart too.

What is your name & the name of your business?

Chef’s Table by Adam Gaunt-Evans. I offer private chef / chef at home experiences across North Wales, Cheshire and beyond.

What’s makes your business stand out from the crowd?

We create dining experiences, and always offer a personal touch. I talk to my clients and get to know them in order to create a bespoke menu to make their occasion feel tailored, special and memorable. My menus are seasonal with a sense of time and place. Ultimately, it’s about making people happy.

How did you get to where you are today?

After completing a culinary apprenticeship in Wales, I continued my training at London’s Dorchester Hotel, the Michelin-starred Greenhouse in Mayfair, and the iconic seven-star Burj al Arab in Dubai – followed by an international career working in restaurants and luxury resorts across Thailand, Sydney, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Back on home soil, I headed the Machine House restaurant in Rossett, and have been recognised by the Michelin guide for my signature seasonal Welsh cooking with influences from my travels. Today, I balance working as a hospitality educator and running the businesses.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?

Do what makes you happy and fulfilled, and you will be successful. Money is a by-product.

And what advice would you pass on to young entrepreneurs?

Create something unique if you want to stand out in a competitive market. Never compromise on your values.

What keeps you motivated?

The changing seasons and the fact there’s always something to learn and discover with food.

What’s the best thing about owning a business?

I have several small businesses including Chef’s Table and a culinary consultancy, and we are also launching a spice retail business later this year. Being creative keeps me on my toes and extremely motivated.

Being able to meet new people and craft unique experiences. Cooking without the restrictions of a traditional restaurant gives me a lot of freedom.

Greenfield Valley Museum

Steve Tootell is the creative educator at Apple Tree Studios in Denbigh, and he is the perfect person to help get your pottery hobby off to a flying start!

Steve is a trained teacher with a First-Class Honours Degree in Education from Liverpool University. Art and Design was his main subject, but he also trained in Special Education.

As a result, he is a teacher who makes pottery – as opposed to a potter who teaches. He supplies five major galleries across North Wales.

Steve has taught pottery for the past 48 years, 35 of them as a pottery teacher in Japan –enabling him to deliver unique styles, tools and techniques to his students. Most of all, Steve makes this a fun learning experience!

The Apple Tree teaching workshop has four wheels and throwing is the primary focus.

Dave Roberts Solo Exhibition

It is with great pleasure that Oriel Glasfryn Gallery presents its first major solo exhibition of pastel paintings by gallery owner, Dave Roberts PS. Created especially for this exhibition, Dave has focused on his favourite subject; capturing both the grandeur and the intimacy of some of North Wales’ most recognisable land and seascapes.

Dave is an award-winning artist and is one of the UK’s leading exponents of the pastel medium. He was elected to the Pastel Society in 2024 and will be present at the gallery on most days during the exhibition. He will also be providing free demonstrations and talks on various dates. “These paintings have been produced over the last six months and I’ve tried to capture the area in all its moods. You’ll find brightness and darkness; tranquillity and turbulence; warmth and bleakness. Frequently, you’ll experience all of these in just one day of walking in Eryri or on the Welsh coast!

“This is the largest solo exhibition I’ve done and the process of creating and then selecting work has been enlightening. Being able to plan a show on this scale, particularly for a space that is my own and not another gallery, has allowed me to experiment with a freedom that is not usually possible,”

Dave’s paintings are complemented in the exhibition by work from ceramicist Katherine Breaks and sculptor Nick Eames.

Katherine is a ceramicist recently graduated with a BA (hons) from Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2025. Originally hailing from London, she has flown the nest and is figuring out life as a fledgling and where her practice fits into the real world.

Katherine enjoys functional, narrative and sculptural work, tessellating between the 2D and 3D by bringing pen to paper before delving into clay.

Nick’s work is held in some notable collections. He developed an interest in sculpture from an early age, securing his first commission, for the London headquarters of Equitable Life, at the age of just 16. He enrolled at Maidstone College of Art in 1979, where Anthony Gormley was one of his tutors. After graduating with a degree in sculpture in 1982, Nick ran his own mould making, casting and restoration business in South London, in 2002 he decided to relocate with his family to the rural village of Cilcain, in North Wales. This is Nick’s first public exhibition in ten years. n

He shows us, through an extensive and varied selection of images, how for over 250 years the mountain has remained a reliable source of artistic inspiration in an everchanging world.

Over a hundred illustrations, many of them of works seldom reproduced, allow readers to judge for themselves how a

single place can give rise to such a varied and distinctive artistic tradition.

Green was the Librarian of the National Library of Wales between 1998 and 2013 and is now a successful author. His Wales in 100 Objects, published by Gomer in 2018, was awarded the Non-fiction Welsh Book of the Year in 2019. Previous publications also include Voices on the path: a History of Walking in Wales (2024) and he regularly contributes to his online publication gwallter on art, literature, history, walking and other subjects. n

The Paper Plane

There’s something about April that makes everything feel new again. The evenings are a little longer, you see more people out and about, and suddenly it just feels right to trade in those heavy winter drinks for something lighter. That’s why we picked The Paper Plane as our cocktail of the month at Number 25 in Rhos-on-Sea.

It’s a modern classic, created by bartender Sam Ross in 2008. On paper, it’s simple. In the glass, though, it’s something special. The name comes from the song Paper Planes, which pretty much nails the mood – light, playful, and with plenty going on underneath.

What we love about The Paper Plane is the balance. You’ve got bourbon bringing a bit of warmth, Aperol adding a gentle bitterness, amaro giving it depth, and fresh lemon juice to keep everything crisp and refreshing. It’s made using equal parts, which keeps it clean and easy to drink, while still being interesting enough that you pick up something new each time.

This month, we wanted to bring in something a little different, and the Paper Plane felt like a natural fit. It’s bright and approachable, with just enough depth to give it real character – ideal for both a quick visit or a longer evening.

Renewable energy systems for your home

This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.

Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.

A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.

The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.

If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.

Gemma’s journey from biomedical scientist to North Wales lawyer

Gemma Wynne has taken an unconventional route into law, moving to North Wales from Manchester, where she previously worked as a scientist, before joining Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors in Conwy.

She qualified as a solicitor in January this year and now provides legal support for clients buying and selling commercial property and agricultural land, including advising on renewable energy initiatives and tourism projects.

What’s your favourite thing about living and working in North Wales?

After living and working in Manchester, I’d say it’s the lifestyle change – the fresh air, and being so close to both the beach and the mountains.

How would you describe your job?

Varied. Every matter is different and brings its own challenges. Everything I do is client-focused, with the client at the centre of every transaction, and we always want to provide the best possible service. Having worked in the NHS, putting the client – or patient – first comes naturally to me.

Did you always want to become a lawyer?

No, not always. It had crossed my mind when I was much younger, but I didn’t think I had ‘the brains’ for it and dismissed the idea while I was at college. Instead, I pursued a career in science, obtaining a BSc in Biomedical Science in 2009 and then working as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology until 2021.

When we moved from Manchester to Conwy, I decided it was time for a major life change and took on the challenge of the SQE (Solicitors Qualifying Examination) independently before joining the firm. I sat and passed the SQE before starting at Lanyon Bowdler, initially joining in a support role rather than as a trainee, before later qualifying as a solicitor. It felt like the right point in my life to make the change and pursue a career in law.

What local causes are close to your heart?

Although not local to North Wales, a cause especially close to my heart is 5* Rommi Rescues. They are a group of the mostkind hearted individuals based in Leicestershire who rescue dogs in Romania. Nearly five years ago, we welcomed our beautiful dog, Enfys, into our home with their help. Without their work, she would still have been living in terrible conditions, so their work means a great deal to us.

If you hadn’t found a career in law, what would you be doing? I would still be in my previous profession as a Special Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology – perhaps studying for an MSc or training to become a Clinical Scientist.

What’s your view of the explosion in AI – pros and cons?

I think AI can be a positive development, and it’s something we need to embrace where it genuinely helps whether in everyday life or in the workplace. Pros – it can save a lot of time during research, whether that be researching the best places to go in a new city or researching a complex legal question or summarising large bundles of documents. Cons – it’s of course not perfect and time must be spent verifying the results and we must appreciate that it can’t be relied on blindly.

Describe your perfect Sunday.

Heading out for the day on a long walk with my husband, daughter and our two dogs, stopping on the way for a picnic and finishing in a village pub.

Do you know of any hidden gems in North Wales which more people should know about?

Not exactly hidden, but here in the Conwy office we are all very fond of Popty Conwy Bakery on Conwy High Street for a sweet treat!

Macular Hole and Its Treatment

A macular hole is a small gap that forms in the centre of the retina (the macula), which is responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It can cause blurred or distorted central vision, making tasks like reading or recognising faces difficult. It most commonly occurs with age. Treatment usually involves a procedure called vitrectomy surgery. During this operation, the vitreous gel is removed and replaced with a special gas bubble that helps the hole close. Patients are often advised to maintain a face-down position for a few days after surgery to keep the bubble in the correct place. The success rate is generally high, especially if treated early, and vision often improves over time. However, recovery can take several weeks, and follow-up is important. When grief is complicated: What if you didn’t love them?

When someone dies, people often speak about the loss of a ‘loved one’. It’s a kind phrase, and for many families it’s exactly right. Over the years, we have learned that grief doesn’t always fit neatly into that description.

Sometimes relationships are strained, and life’s circumstances can make them even more difficult. Human relationships are rarely simple and can at times carry hurt or tension. Even so, when someone dies, the sense of loss can still be very real.

When someone dies, the emotions that follow can be far more mixed than people feel able to admit out loud. Alongside sadness, there may be anger, relief, guilt or unresolved hurt. Feelings like these are far more common than many people realise.

The emotions people don’t talk about Recently, a lady shared an experience with us that has stayed in our thoughts. As her husband was nearing the end of his life, she was trying to adjust his pillows to make him more comfortable. In a moment of frustration, he said to her “You’ve always been stupid.” Those were the last words he ever spoke to her.

She carried those words with her for a long time. Alongside the sadness of losing him, she felt hurt, anger and guilt, wondering whether she could have done something differently in those final moments. When the time came for his funeral, she helped craft the eulogy and then listened as it described the more positive sides of his life and character. She understood why it was that way; funerals are a time to remember the good in someone’s life and the impact they had on others.

Privately, she found herself struggling with the difference between the public picture of him and the complicated reality of their relationship behind closed doors. She kindly gave permission for this story to be shared anonymously, because she knows many others carry similar feelings but rarely feel they can speak out about it. Many people quietly hold these

experiences, believing they are the only ones who feel this way and this can leave people feeling isolated with their own memories or emotions.

All relationships are different

Some relationships bring comfort and warmth, others are more complicated and carry a long history of mixed emotions. Recognising that reality allows families to feel understood rather than judged during such a difficult time.

Grief can include love, sadness, anger, regret, relief, and many other emotions; sometimes all at once. None of those feelings make you a bad person. They simply reflect the reality that relationships, and life itself, are rarely simple. Grief is deeply personal, and there is no right or wrong way to experience it.

It can sometimes help to talk about them with someone you trust, such as a friend, a family member, a counsellor or a bereavement support organisation.
