Annual Report

01 April 2025 to 31 March 2026

Foreword

I am delighted to present the 2025-26 Annual Report for the ReNU and ReNU+ programmes. These programmes are Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), led by Northumbria University with Newcastle and Durham universities as partners. ReNU is a £5.8M investment training 65 PhD students between 2019 and 2027, while ReNU+ is a follow-on investment of £5.4M to train a further 52 PhD students between 2024 and 2032.

2025-26 has been another excellent year for the ReNU/ReNU+ programmes amidst an ever-turbulent global context for energy stemming from geopolitical uncertainty and electrification driven by digital infrastructure and transport. As always, our students and their research are at the heart of the programmes, and I am immensely proud of their success. To date, 23 ReNU students have submitted their PhD theses, passed their viva voce examinations, graduated and progressed to high skill jobs across industry and academia. ReNU graduates are now driving clean growth in the United Kingdom and internationally. They also form an important network who remain engaged with the ReNU/ReNU+ programmes through new alumni events and regularly report positive feedback about the value of the CDT training programme which all students undertake in addition to their individual research project. On a personal note, I find it deeply rewarding to observe their success and know that they will lead, inspire and contribute to a green future enabled – in part – by the opportunities afforded to them through ReNU.

A key highlight this year has been welcoming 12 new Cohort 6 ReNU+ students. ReNU+ has a focus on building more diverse cohorts – recognising that this is essential for an inclusive and sustainable energy transition – as well as extending the benefits of the CDT model more widely, for example to people seeking new opportunities in the green economy. ReNU+ was just one of 7 EPSRC CDTs funded in the Supporting an Innovative Approach to CDT Delivery category and, over the next few years, I look forward to implementing and reporting on our efforts to achieve this goal. As ever, everyone in ReNU/ReNU+ is aware of our responsibility to ensure that science and engineering principles and research excellence are at the heart of reducing environmental impact and ensuring energy security and affordability.

In the report, you will find details of our students’ success across many different aspects of their work. This wouldn’t be possible without the help and support of their supervisors, the ReNU and ReNU+ management teams, our Strategic Advisory Boards (including industry partners) and professional support teams across the three host institutions. ReNU/ReNU+ has always been characterised by a fantastic team that often feels more like a family as we support each other through the ups and downs of doing research and tackling complex global challenges. I take this opportunity to thank everyone at ReNU/ReNU+ and look forward to another fantastic year.

Governance and Management

The organisation and structure of the CDT is governed by a set of Terms of Reference developed during the first year of operation and approved by the Management Committee. Three bodies provide oversight at strategic and operational levels.

Management Committee (MC)

The Management Committee holds responsibility for the vision and operation of the CDT, ensuring delivery is consistent with the project proposal. The MC meets every two months to oversee programme progress, address strategic priorities, and ensure the continued quality and coherence of the doctoral training offer.

Strategic Advisory Board (SAB)

The Strategic Advisory Board provides external challenge and strategic guidance to the CDT. It is composed of the ReNU⁺ MC, industry representatives, an EPSRC Project Liaison Officer, external academic advisors, non-profit organisations, and student representatives. The SAB meets twice per year and is chaired by the Decarbonisation Programme Leader from Northern Gas Networks.

Delivery Groups (DGs)

The Delivery Groups oversee the operational aspects of the CDT. Each DG is led by a named investigator as Chair, alongside academic supervisors and doctoral candidate representatives, ensuring student voices are embedded in programme delivery.
