WHAT’S HAPPENING Robert Prevost, first American pope, takes name Leo XIV Vatican City Robert Prevost has been elected the first pope from the United States in the history of the Catholic Church. The Chicagoborn missionary took the name Leo XIV. In his first words as Pope Francis’ successor, he emphasized peace, dialogue and missionary evangelization. Prevost had been a leading candidate despite a longstanding taboo against a U.S. pope. But he’s also a Peruvian citizen and lived for years in Peru, first as a missionary and then as an archbishop. He was elevated to the senior ranks of cardinals in January. The crowd in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers when his election was announced. Prevost is a graduate of Villanova University just outside of Philadelphia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1977.

RALEIGH — The N.C. Local Government Commission has granted retroactive approval for a $360,000 lease entered into by the Town of Norwood to acquire seven police vehicles through Enterprise Fleet Management, Inc. The lease had not received the required LGC approval prior to execution, but the town worked with state officials to resolve the oversight and ensure compliance. The vehicles — already delivered and in service — include one Chevrolet Tahoe, one Chevrolet Silverado, four Dodge Chargers and one Ford F-150. Lease payments had begun before the issue was identified. Norwood staff contacted LGC officials, submitted the required application, and received formal approval at the commission’s May 6 meeting. According to the town, the lease was necessary to equip the police department

By Charles Curcio Stanly News Journal NORWOOD — The Town Council unanimously approved a request from a Charlotte-based movie company to film on the sidewalks of the town this summer. Faris Khaleeli submitted a request in writing to the town as a location scout on behalf of independent writer and filmmaker Michael Denny to film this June or July in downtown Norwood. The short film will be called “Slone,” according to the letter, adding the movie will center around “a self-reliant, community-focused hero who works independently to protect and serve

The LGC, chaired by State Treasurer Brad Briner, ensures financial oversight for local government borrowing and leasing. Norwood’s item was the only Stanly County matter approved at the Tuesday meeting that also included more than $1 billion in statewide bond and infrastructure financing.
