Captivating history, culture, and cuisine await in BERMUDA’S OLDEST AND MOST ATMOSPHERIC TOWN.

Words by TERRY WARD

Bermuda is the rare destination that seduces on every level — from the obvious allure of pink-sand beaches kissed by turquoise seas to the deeper layers of lore, history, and culture woven into the fabric of the island itself. And nowhere does that rich story unfold more beautifully than in the Town of St. George. Settled in 1612 and recognised as the oldest continuously inhabited English settlement in the Western Hemisphere, this storied town invites travellers to slow down and step back in time. To truly appreciate St. George’s — from its cobblestone lanes and winding alleys to its centuries-old traditions — it’s worth delving into its past, where Bermuda’s heritage reveals itself one captivating chapter at a time.

// A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, St. George’s is celebrated for its remarkably preserved architecture.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, St. George’s is celebrated for its remarkably preserved architecture, making it a favourite amongst visitors from around the globe. An estimated 65 percent of the town’s buildings date from before 1900, with roughly 40 percent of those early structures built prior to 1800. In 1609, when approximately 150 people aboard the ill-fated Sea Venture shipwreck were cast ashore on Bermuda’s rocky coastline, they found refuge here on the island’s easternmost point — now known as St. George’s. Today, visitors can glimpse the past that helped shape Bermuda into what it is today.
While more than 400 years have passed since that pivotal shipwreck, much of St. George’s — Bermuda’s original capital before the title was bestowed upon Hamilton in 1815 — continues to centre on its historical treasures.
St. George’s reveals its origins as an English colonial village through elegant examples of early architecture, winding lanes with uniquely Bermudian names, and museums filled with stories of the past, all whilst maintaining its importance as a living, working town.
Throughout the year, a lively calendar of events brings the town to life for curious visitors, whilst delighting Bermudians with living history.
In May, the annual Peppercorn Ceremony fills King’s Square with pomp and circumstance, as the Masonic Lodge of St. George’s pays its traditional annual dues of a single peppercorn to the town — an event that remains uniquely Bermudian.
For a taste of summer energy from July through September, head to one of the Eastern Counties Cup Association Annual Classic cricket matches, where spirited competition meets quintessential warm-weather island vibes.
Come winter, embrace the festive season at the Bermuda National Trust’s annual Christmas Walkabout. The event, held on Friday, December 4, 2026, sets the town aglow with lights, music, and holiday entertainment, with St. George’s historic homes dressed for the season and opening their doors to the public as part of the celebrations.

In an almost century-old perfumery, Isabelle RamsayBrackstone blends Bermuda’s ocean, botanicals, and local lore into fragrances that capture the island’s soul, one bottle at a time.
AS MASTER PERFUMER at The Lili Bermuda Perfumery since 2004, Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone’s connection to both The Perfumery and the Town of St. George runs deep — she holds both close to her heart. She first arrived on the island more than two decades ago with her late husband, Kirby, after the couple decided Bermuda was the ideal place to raise their young family, a decision that would shape both her personal journey and creative path.
Drawn to The Perfumery, located at Stewart Hall in St. George’s, for its creative freedom and family-friendly flexibility, Isabelle quickly found inspiration within the walls of this historic building that has been around since 1707. “Oh, if the walls could speak,” Isabelle says. “They do not speak, per se, but they sure do whisper, and I listen to all the stories they wish to share.”
“Each one of my perfumes tells a story — beautiful stories about our island,” she explains. “About our botanicals, of course, but also our ocean, the wind, our famous cocktails, favourite rhythms, shipwrecks, and our legendary joie de vivre.”
Whether she’s guiding visitors through the creation of their own signature fragrance during The Perfumery’s 90-minute Perfume Workshops, offering complimentary behind-the-scenes glimpses into The Perfumery’s fragrance process, or enjoying the tranquillity
of Sweet P serving Afternoon High Tea in The Perfumery’s on-site gardens (held Wednesdays and Saturdays), Isabelle says she truly has the greatest job in the world — made even sweeter by witnessing the delight of her guests.
“Everyone who walks through our doors is always profoundly happy in the moment,” she says. “People who come to visit us are on vacation, and they want to treat themselves and their loved ones. Our staff is very knowledgeable, and their ability to connect with our clients is second to none.”
Guests come to discover a new fragrance — or simply to soak in The Perfumery’s energy. The carefully wrapped bottles they leave with carry the essence of Bermuda with them.
After all, Isabelle’s work is anything but ordinary. She approaches everything with intention and passion, and she has so many real and authentic stories to tell. As just an example, she once re-created a fragrance lost at sea for more than 150 years that was recovered from a shipwreck.
“No other perfumer has made perfume inspired by fragile coral reefs, spectacular hurricanes, or rose bushes so fragrant you can smell them from across Hamilton Harbour,” she says.
When choosing a fragrance, it must be the perfect one for you. It’s like falling in love — when you know, you know. Golden Hour, their latest fragrance that was inspired by Isabelle’s daughter, MarieSophie, is very popular these days, as is SunKiss, a flirty orange flower with vanilla cream. Another popular option is South Water, which is a day at the beach on a sun-drenched August afternoon.
Each of Isabelle’s fragrances will take you right back to paradise and may be your most meaningful souvenir — available only here in Bermuda.

The best way to explore the Town of St. George is on foot or by electric bike. With so many historic sites concentrated in such a compact area, half a day is enough to gain a feel for its rich past. If you plan to visit St. George’s museums or venture further afield to the Unfinished Church, Fort St. Catherine, and nearby beaches, allow a full day.
Begin your exploration at Ordnance Island, where visitors are greeted by a statue of Sir George Somers, who founded the colony here after the Sea Venture was wrecked — and for whom St. George’s is named. This is also the setting for historical re-enactments featuring the stocks and pillory and the ducking stool, stark reminders of 17thand 18th-century punishment practices.
Nearby, Bob Burns Park offers a lovely spot to relax and watch the comings and goings across St. George’s Harbour. After taking in the nautical

views, continue north across the bridge to King’s Square — the heart of St. George’s and host to many local events throughout the year. The 18th-century St. George’s Town Hall overlooks the square and is open to the public on weekdays, with a small exhibit inside.
From here, head east behind Town Hall to discover several of St. George’s oldest buildings, including imposing Buckingham, the understated elegance of Bridge House (home of Confections cook-
ies), and the island’s first stone building — State House — which also served as Bermuda’s original House of Assembly. These three landmarks showcase classic Bermudian architecture and are well worth seeking out.
Continuing along Bridge Street, make your way north towards Somers’ Garden, a peaceful green oasis in the heart of town and home to one of the island’s iconic moongates. Walk along the western edge of the park, then head uphill to the striking ruins of the Unfinished Church, which was abandoned mid-construction in the late 1800s.
Descend the hill and turn west onto Featherbed Alley to reach the back of St. Peter’s, Their Majesties Chapell, where you can wander through the graveyard — including a segregated section for Black Bermudians, a sobering reminder of the island’s past. Inside the whitewashed walls and wood-beamed interior of the oldest surviving Anglican church in continuous use in the New World, you’ll find the original altar, along with artefacts such as an 18th-century throne salvaged from a shipwreck and communion silver dating back to the 1600s.
Across from the church, Globe Museum — a property of the Bermuda National Trust (BNT) — explores the evolution of St. George’s and Bermuda’s role in the American Civil War through its engaging “Rogues & Runners” exhibit.
Just a block away from St. Peter’s, the St. George’s Historical Society has operated a museum inside Mitchell House since 1922. Built in 1731, the home was purchased by the Society to preserve its legacy and today displays period furniture, china, and household items from centuries past. The basement houses a replica of a Gutenberg printing press, with staff offering demonstrations in the Society’s Featherbed Alley Printery, bringing early printing traditions to life.
// Settled in 1612 and recognised as the oldest continuously inhabited English settlement in the Western Hemisphere, this storied town invites travellers to slow down and step back in time.

Planning a walking tour? Here are the top stops and local highlights to add to your itinerary.
ST. GEORGE’S PARISH OFFERS ONE OF BERMUDA’S most memorable walking experiences, blending centuries-old architecture, cobblestone streets, and coastal fortifications. The Town of St. George, founded in 1612 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, is compact, charming, and rich in stories — best explored on foot at a leisurely pace.
King’s Square: Begin in the historic heart of town. Colourful buildings, shaded benches, and nearby cafés make this a natural starting point.
St. Peter’s, Their Majesties Chappell: The oldest surviving Anglican church in continuous use in the new world, St. Peter’s is a cornerstone of Bermuda’s history and a serene place to pause and reflect.
State House (exterior): Built in 1620 and the oldest building in Bermuda, this stately structure once served as Bermuda’s first seat of government and remains one of the town’s most photographed landmarks.
Tucker House Museum (BNT): One of St. George’s most significant historic residences, Tucker House,
built in 1752, offers insight into life in Bermuda during the 18th century. While public access may be limited at times, the exterior alone is worth a stop, and visitors can check locally for current viewing opportunities.
Globe Museum (BNT): Housed in a circa-1700 building, the museum explores St. George’s role during the American Civil War and provides excellent historical context in an intimate setting.
Mitchell House: Built in 1731, Mitchell House offers a fascinating glimpse into 18th-century Bermudian life, complete with period furnishings and a traditional colonial-era kitchen.
Unfinished Church: One of St. George’s most striking landmarks, the Unfinished Church is an open-air Gothic-style structure begun in the late 1800s and never completed after storm damage. Its roofless stone arches and hilltop setting make it a favourite with photographers.
Fort St. Catherine: For those with extra time, continue towards Fort St. Catherine to explore historic ramparts and enjoy sweeping Atlantic views along Bermuda’s dramatic eastern shoreline.
1. Best time to go: Morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and softer light for photos.
2. What to wear: Comfortable walking shoes, as cobblestone streets can be uneven. Light layers and sun protection are also recommended.
3. Explore with ease: Enhance your walk by downloading the Bermuda Smart Tours app, which offers narrated self-guided tours, allowing you to listen to stories and historical insights as you explore St. George’s at your own pace.
4. Museum hours: Hours can vary by season, so be sure to confirm ahead of time.
5. Don’t rush: This walk is best enjoyed slowly, with time built in for browsing local shops or lingering over lunch by the harbour.

If you only have a few hours, try this classic town walk, which can be completed in roughly three hours or less, depending on your pace:
• Start at King’s Square
• Visit Peter’s, Their Majesties Chappell
• Walk past the State House
• Stop at Tucker House Museum
• Explore Globe Museum and Mitchell House
• Finish at the Unfinished Church for panoramic views
If time permits and you’d like to extend the experience, pair the town walk with Fort St. Catherine and a nearby beach stop for a memorable culture-meets-coast finale.

Visitors can sample many of Bermuda’s favourite dishes here, including iconic Bermuda fish chowder, classic Sunday morning codfish and potatoes, or the day’s seasoned local catch served with peas ’n’ rice and coleslaw — or ordered the Bermudian way, piled high on raisin bread, and layered with tartar sauce, coleslaw, tomato, and hot sauce.
Beyond local fare, the town also offers casual Chinese takeaway, quintessential Afternoon Teas, and coffee shops serving expertly crafted espresso drinks.
In the heart of town, White Horse Pub & Restaurant and Wahoo’s Bistro & Patio are both celebrated for fresh local seafood, awardwinning cocktails, and sweeping harbour views. During the summer months, White Horse often hosts live local entertainment on its floating stage.
For sunset seekers, there’s nothing quite like a sundowner at Achilles, known for its stellar views and contemporary tavern menu featuring inventive fusion dishes inspired by Asian and Mediterranean flavours. Conveniently located across from Fort St. Catherine, it’s a favourite stop as day turns to dusk.
