In Bermuda, LOCALLY MADE GOODS, heritage brands, and ISLAND CULTURE COME TOGETHER TO DEFINE the shopping experience.

Words by BRITTANY SIDDLE

Shopping in Bermuda is less about filling bags and more about collecting stories. Across the island, retail experiences reflect the same sensibility found in its art and culture: Objects are chosen carefully, shaped by hand, and tied to a place and time. What visitors take home is rarely mass produced. Instead, it is often made slowly, locally, and with intention, designed to last long after the island fades from view.

The Island, Embodied through Objects
Tucked between pastel buildings and swaying palmettos, Bermuda’s shopping scene feels personal by nature. From the spirited streets of Hamilton to the steady hum of tucked-away boutiques and studios, commerce here is not separate from culture; it is one of its most tangible expressions. This is a reflective retail guide, where local perspectives shape what is made, sold, and carried home.
Certain items feel unmistakably Bermudian: rooted in history, carved by culture, and garnished with local pride. Hand-crafted items made from Bermuda cedar, once prized by shipbuilders for its resistance to rot, remain powerful symbols of the island’s resilience and maritime heritage. Ranging from trinket-sized carvings to large-scale antiques, items for purchase are available across many souvenir

shops and boutiques, including Brown & Co., 59 Front, and Flying Colours in Hamilton and The Littlest Drawbridge Gift Shop and The Bermuda Craft Market in Royal Naval Dockyard.
For those drawn to objects with deeper historical resonance, Bermuda offers unique opportunities to collect pieces of its past. The Bermuda Monetary Authority presents curated coin collections that trace the island’s economic and maritime history. For the avid philatelists fascinated by Bermuda’s postal history, the Bermuda Philatelic Bureau offers stamps that commemorate moments of national significance while acknowledging the island’s bilateral ties as the United Kingdom’s oldest overseas territory.
Locally produced flavours also play a role in what visitors carry home. Outerbridge’s Original Sherry Peppers Sauce, a staple of Bermudian kitchens for generations, brings the island’s culinary identity into everyday use, available for purchase islandwide. Elsewhere, long-standing retailers such as Cuarenta Bucaneros Limited and Chatham House continue Bermuda’s tradition of careful curation, offering premium cigars
with an emphasis on quality and heritage. For added convenience, Cuarenta Bucaneros offers delivery straight to your accommodations in Bermuda or international shipping, ensuring you can enjoy a premium smoke wherever you are.
Handmade items that reflect tradition, craftsmanship, and independent hustle feel like a rarity; but in Bermuda, this art is kept alive. The island’s creative spirit is most evident in its independent studios and jewellery houses, where craftsmanship is encouraged and preferred. Walker Christopher Goldsmiths is known for incorporating authentic shipwreck coins, salvaged gold doubloons, and silver pieces of eight into custom jewellery. These wearable heirlooms blend fine craftsmanship with Bermuda’s seafaring past. Whilst maintaining the numismatic value of these coins, you can also appreciate the authentic artistry of these rare artefacts.

The island’s upscale jewellery scene carries a quiet confidence, where elite diamonds, understated gemstones, and iridescent pearls glint behind display windows. A sophisticated elegance will meet you on Front Street where Crisson Jewellers sits, offering a refined selection of luxury brands including Rolex, David Yurman, Roberto Coin, Marco Bicego, and FOPE, blending international excellence with island delicacy.
Island flair is often found in the details. For a more artistic expression, Davidrose Studio presents its exclusive and beloved Ocean Collection, inspired by the island’s surrounding waters where vibrant hues of blues and greens fuse in many of their works. These beautifully
// Certain items feel unmistakably Bermudian: rooted in history, carved by culture, and garnished with local pride.
crafted pieces, famously worn by global superstar Beyoncé, reflect Bermuda’s influence far beyond its shores.
Classic island elegance can also be found at Bermuda Jewellery Ltd., known for its one-of-a-kind jewellery and limited-edition custom designs, as well as at E.R. Aubrey Jewellers Limited, a long-standing local favourite offering everything from timeless fine gold jewellery to island-inspired styles.
Searching for that personalised, unique memento to bring back with you? The island is proud to offer curated items that match your style and flair. Whether it be a tote bag inspired by the island’s luscious flora and fauna from Dreamscape Designs or handmade leather sandals from Della Valle Sandals, in Hamilton, these purchases feel collaborative, chosen to reflect both place and your distinct personality.
Few souvenirs are as evocative as scent. Bermuda’s signature fragrances have become an enduring part of the island’s retail identity. Lili Bermuda, one of the island’s most recognisable heritage brands, captures local botanicals and island landscapes in perfumes that feel both nostalgic and contemporary. The Bermuda Fragrance Collection offers a modern interpretation, evoking summer nights, fruity florals, and salty sea air in wearable form. Available at select locations, including 59 Front and Brown & Co. in Hamilton, these fragrances allow scent to

become a lasting reminder of time spent in Bermuda.
From the island’s renowned beaches to its authentic Bermuda shorts, clothing and accessories offer visitors the chance to take home a piece of the island’s unmistakable style. Designers such as Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery incorporate pink sand and native motifs into jewellery that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in Bermudian tradition. When it comes to island apparel, few pieces

are as iconic and enduring as the Bermuda short. As early as the 20th century, teashop owner and native Bermudian Nathanial Coxon began cutting and hemming his employees’ khakis, altering the uniform to make the stifling summer months more bearable. The style was soon adopted as a practical uniform for British colonial officers stationed in Bermuda during World War I, evolving into a symbol of both professional polish and relaxed tropical flair. Today, Bermuda shorts remain a statement of identity and pride, worn by Bermudians and visitors alike — offering a wearable link to the island’s history. Home to the original Bermuda Shorts, first created in 1918, the historic English Sports Shop welcomes guests for expertly tailored apparel, with stylists on hand to personalise every detail. In a similar spirit, TABS Bermuda presents a modern interpretation of this island staple, dressing visitors with the same effortless polish embraced by locals. Beyond its signature shorts, TABS also offers vibrant swimwear and stylish clothing for men, women, and children, along with eye-catching home accents.
Island aesthetics linger in boutiques scattered throughout Hamilton, including the likes of Lusso, Marks & Spencer, 27th Century Boutique, and the Washington Mall, where there are more than 60 retailers.
Those seeking a high-fashion boutique experience can step into Lusso, where colourful resort wear designs promise to refresh and elevate your style. A generous Lilly Pulitzer collection showcases island-inspired prints that pay tribute to Bermuda’s lush flora and fauna, while the windows tempt passers-by with an array of statement accessories. Lusso also carries designer handbags and eye-catching belts and shoes from labels including MCM, Moschino, Fendi, and Salvatore Ferragamo.
For a colourful spin on your everyday wardrobe, island apparel and accessories will become an indispensable fashion staple. Island wear has rarely felt so comfortable or looked so effortlessly refined.

In Bermuda, shopping with intention allows for a personal and purposeful retail experience.
MORE THAN JUST simple keepsakes, thoughtful souvenirs available across the island help to capture Bermuda’s spirit while supporting the wellbeing of its people, environment, and creative community. Throughout Bermuda, conscious retail is gaining momentum, offering visitors meaningful ways to shop with intention and give back long after they’ve returned home.
Faced with notable environmental shifts, islands around the world are often the first to feel the effects of climate change. Though small in scale, Bermuda remains at the forefront of environmentally conscious retail, placing sustainability, wellness, and community impact at the heart of everyday purchases.
At the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s Oceans Gift Shop, for instance, shopping directly supports marine education and conservation. The carefully curated selection includes ocean-inspired jewellery, eco-friendly books, educational children’s items, and locally made artwork. Best of all, each purchase contributes to programmes that foster stewardship of Bermuda’s surrounding seas.
The Bermuda Craft Market situated in the old Cooperage building in historic Royal Naval Dockyard offers one of the island’s most authentic local shopping experiences. Here, the handwoven baskets, cedarwood carvings, ceramics, candles, textiles, and island-inspired art are all created by Bermudian artisans. Many vendors are also present on-site, transforming each purchase into a personal exchange rooted in heritage and craftsmanship.

Throughout Bermuda, conscious retail is gaining momentum.
For visitors seeking healthy, mindful living products, Salt + Cedar in Hamilton blends natural beauty with ethical production. This boutique — known for its plant-based, cruelty-free skincare, wellness goods, and lifestyle items — embodies a sustainability-first ethos that mirrors Bermuda’s deep respect for its natural environment.
Another standout is Redo Bermuda, a locally driven initiative focused on reducing everyday waste and eliminating single-use plastics by offering reusable essentials designed for island life. From embroidered caps and beach bags to refillable water bottles, Redo makes it easy to take home functional, planet-friendly items made with care and intention.
Style infused with purpose awaits at TABS Bermuda (The Authentic Bermuda Shorts), where classic island apparel is increasingly paired with meaningful collaborations rooted in conservation and local creativity. One recent standout is the “Spring Island” print collection created in partnership with Bermudian artist Avarie Graham. The vibrant, limited-edition design draws inspiration from Bermuda’s endangered and endemic species, featuring detailed botanical illustrations of Darrell’s Fleabane, Bermudiana, the leafcutter bee, and the Bermuda palmetto. Printed across polos, button-downs, and ties, each colourful piece celebrates the island’s natural beauty while raising awareness of its most vulnerable wildlife. A portion of proceeds from this collection was donated to the Bermuda Zoological Society to support ongoing conservation efforts, ensuring that these iconic island garments give back in a tangible way. Shopping in Bermuda doesn’t just give you a souvenir to bring home — it supports the island itself, ensuring your memories leave a positive footprint on the place that made them.

West End Finds
Between Royal Naval Dockyard and Clocktower Shopping Mall, you’ll find a collection of West End retailers offering thoughtful, locally made keepsakes.
Steeped in history, Clocktower Shopping Mall sits within Royal Naval Dockyard, originally built in the 19th century for the British Royal Navy and distinguished by its twin 100-foot towers, restored cobblestone floors, and iron pillars. Today, the mall is home to more than 20 local businesses, making every shopping excursion here one rooted in centuries of heritage. For something truly distinctive, visit Jon Faulkner at his self-titled pottery studio. This inviting, contemporary space showcases an evolving collection of salt-glazed, wheel-thrown pottery, with new shapes and designs continually emerging. Some pieces carry historical significance, such as the Bartmann jugs — replicas of bottles recovered from the 1609 shipwreck of the Sea Venture. Faulkner’s signature handmade Bermuda rockpools are especially striking. The soft interior, awash with hues of blue, mirrors the fluidity of the Atlantic Ocean and is contrasted by a hard exterior, reminiscent of Bermuda’s limestone coastline.
Perfectly situated in the old Cooperage building — once a barrel makers’ workshop complete with large fireplaces for working iron — The Bermuda Craft Market hosts more than 60 local artisans. Here you’ll find Bermuda cedar sculptures, handmade ceramics and jewellery, quilts, locally authored books, and much more.
Whatever you’re shopping for, don’t miss the opportunity to take home a piece of Bermuda’s soul — thoughtfully crafted by the island’s talented makers.

Alongside department-store favourites and souvenir shops, you’ll find bohemian-inspired fashion, handmade sea glass jewellery, refined beauty products, and thoughtfully curated gifts from the U.K. and Europe.

It all began centuries ago when sailors were fortifying barrels of sherry with fiery hot peppers. This all-purpose seasoning was used to mask the taste of rancid shipboard rations. Not exactly an alluring origin — and perhaps it would have been more precise to call them “Peppered Sherry,” but that’s history! In 1964, Yeaton Duval Outerbridge brewed up a batch of Bermuda Sherry Peppers for the Harbourfront Restaurant in Hamilton. Demand was immediate from locals and visitors alike. Since then, Outerbridge’s Original has become synonymous with sherry peppers and is a staple of chefs in Bermuda and around the world. Customarily used to enhance Bermuda fish chowder, there are several blends of sherry and rum that are sensational in soups and stews, as well as many other dishes. Also, try their Bloody Mary Fix, Swashbuckling Steak Sauce, Sizzling Soy Sauce, and other condiments. You are sure to enjoy them!

Brittany Siddle
Discover shipwreck coins that offer a tangible connection to Bermuda’s maritime past.
BERMUDA’S DEEP CONNECTION to the ocean is undeniable, with the island’s maritime history dating back to its discovery in the early 1500s by Spanish explorer Juan de Bermúdez. Over a century later, the island became known as the shipwreck capital of the Atlantic Ocean. Since its first settlers arrived in 1609, over 300 vessels have sunk off Bermuda’s surrounding reefs.
As centuries have passed, the mysteries of all that sunken treasure still remain at the heart of Bermuda’s maritime folklore. Coins once used in global commerce — including Spanish cobs, silver reales, and other maritime currencies — were lost to the ocean during wrecks and storms only to be rediscovered generations later.
At Walker Christopher Goldsmiths, located in Hamilton on Queen Street, centuries-old shipwreck coins are uniquely transformed into striking pieces of jewellery, each one carrying the weight of history, mystery, and meticulous craftsmanship. These rare artefacts,

shaped by saltwater and time, now form the foundation of Walker Christopher’s most distinctive designs.
Behind this legacy of over 40 years is Bill Wivell: diver, jeweller, historian, and long-time jewellery designer at Walker Christopher. Bill has spent countless hours underwater alongside Bermuda’s legendary divers, including the prominent Teddy Tucker, who was known for discovering the Tucker Cross in 1955.
Over the past several decades, Bill has built a reputation for original designs that celebrate ancient coins and nautical artefacts, guided by a deep respect for Bermuda’s rich maritime heritage. That same commitment to preservation defines his jewellery philosophy. Rather than altering these historic coins beyond recognition, he takes great care to protect their numismatic value, honouring their age, markings, and imperfections. Each coin is designed to showcase its authentic appearance. Whether worn, holed, or uneven, Bill allows these distinct marks to remain visible rather than polished away.

Today, that legacy continues at Walker Christopher, where each piece of jewellery is thoughtfully designed to protect its historic core. Whether unearthed from land, the ocean, or retrieved from underwater caves, the joy, as Bill often notes, lies in being able to wear these tangible pieces of the past rather than locking them away in safes or display cases.
In an age of mass production, Walker Christopher’s jewellery stands apart in a class of its own. These centuries-old treasures remind you that some of the most compelling stories are not newly made but recovered from the deep, preserved with care, and worn with national pride.
