Explore THE HEART OF BERMUDA’S WEST END, where MARITIME HERITAGE MEETS MODERN-DAY dining, shopping, and adventure.

Royal Naval Dockyard

Royal Naval Dockyard is where Bermuda’s history and energy converge. Once a strategic military stronghold, it is now a vibrant waterfront destination — welcoming mega cruise ships while offering visitors an engaging mix of culture, shopping, dining, and outdoor adventure. Whether you’re drawn by centuries-old heritage, high-energy experiences, or simply the pleasure of strolling along the harbour, Dockyard delivers an unforgettable experience that connects Bermuda’s past with its present.

A Brief History

Although Bermuda’s earliest inhabitants settled in the east — fortifying St. George’s and the surrounding area against invasion — the island’s strategic position and proximity to the United States soon proved critical to the United Kingdom. In the 1800s, the British Royal Navy purchased 200 acres at the western end of Bermuda’s distinctive “fishhook” and, over the course of the next 50 years, transformed the site into a formidable military stronghold.

Constructed largely by hand by enslaved and free Bermudians, Royal Naval Dockyard became one of the island’s most significant employers,

providing work for approximately 1,000 people. At its peak, Dockyard activity accounted for more than 15 percent of Bermuda’s income and helped establish a skilled local workforce proficient in trades such as plumbing, carpentry, and other trades.

For more than a century, the Dockyard — often referred to as the “Gibraltar of the West” — played a vital role in defending British interests across the Atlantic. Nearly 600 warships were repaired and returned to service here, and the base supplied naval fleets during key historical conflicts, including the War of 1812, the American Civil War, and both World Wars.

In 1951, the Royal Navy withdrew from Dockyard, though the base was not officially closed until 1995. A turning point came in 1982 with the passage of the West End Development Corporation (WEDCO) Act, which led to an investment of more than $60 million aimed at reimagining the historic site as Bermuda’s premier tourist destination.

Today, Royal Naval Dockyard stands as a centrepiece of Bermuda’s heritage, its global relevance reaffirmed in 2017 when it hosted the 35th America’s Cup. The prestigious international sailing competition brought elite athletes and thousands of spectators from around the world, marking a modern chapter in Dockyard’s storied past.

Present-Day Dockyard

The continual evolution of Royal Naval Dockyard is thanks, in part, to Bermuda Land Management Corporation (BLMC), formerly WEDCO, which maintains the integrity of the area’s historical elements, ensuring visitors can

experience and learn about the site’s unique 200year history.

Beyond the souvenir shops, art galleries, and restaurants, cross the shallow moat and behold the large wooden doors that mark the entrance to The Keep, the largest fort on the island and the location of the National Museum of Bermuda. The Keep was designed by Royal Engineers to defend the various approaches to the Dockyard. Now these buildings, many of which are former ammunition storehouses, house countless exhibits, artefacts, offices, and event spaces.

Visitors can explore 500 years of Bermuda’s history at this 16-acre site, where more than 80,000 unique objects are on display. Items to peruse include historical documents, photographs, plans and maps, art, archaeological finds including shipwreck artefacts, small watercraft, and relics of Bermudian life over the centuries. Here you can learn about Bermuda’s links to the West Indies and the Azores, enslavement in Bermuda, and the island’s defence heritage.

Within the walls of The Keep you’ll find the Commissioner’s House. Built in the 1820s for the civilian commissioner in charge of the Dockyard, the painstakingly restored building is the oldest cast iron frame residential building in the Western Hemisphere, and from its hilltop perch, the panoramic view of the island is incredible.

From April through October 2026, visitors are invited to join an interactive experience — complete with period costume — to learn about the area’s infrastructure and glimpse what life may have been like in the mid-1800s. The historical walking tour runs on Fridays from April 3 to September 18 and on Tuesdays from April 7 to October 27, with all tours beginning at 9:45 a.m. Built in 1856 as the Great Eastern Storehouse and the Great Northern Storehouse to support the British Royal Navy’s operations, Clocktower Shopping Mall’s formidable three-foot-thick protective stone walls and stately twin spires serve as a picturesque beacon for today’s visitors. Clocktower Shopping Mall hosts more than 20 local shops and eateries and has become one of the most popular shopping destinations on the island.

WHISPERS AND WAVES: BERMUDA AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

Discover how a small Atlantic island quietly shaped the course of the American Revolution through commerce, courage, and carefully forged alliances.

In the 18th century, Bermuda was a British colony, a small, isolated archipelago with little farmland but a big maritime economy. Industrious Bermudians had built an Atlantic world of commerce and kinship, anchored by a flourishing shipbuilding industry and trade in salt, timber, and provisions. When British trade laws allowed the Crown to pinch profits, however, they turned to smuggling under the noses of royal governors. These networks were not just economic; they were family ties that spanned oceans, reinforcing Bermuda’s stake in transatlantic trade. Like their counterparts in North America, many Bermudians bristled at imperial interference; and those tensions over autonomy and commerce would soon spill into action.

Seven hundred miles from the American mainland, a daring midnight raid would secure Bermuda’s place in Revolutionary history. The Gunpowder Plot of August 1775 was no reckless gamble but a calculated move, brokered through Atlantic networks and sustained by relationships stretching from St. George’s to Philadelphia and London. At the heart of the plot stood Colonel Henry Tucker, a Bermudian merchant-politician with deep transatlantic ties, and Benjamin Franklin, the Revolution’s master strategist and connector.

MUSKET SMOKE AT LEXINGTON, fiery speeches in Philadelphia, Washington’s icy crossing of the Delaware — these scenes dominate textbooks and documentaries centred on the American Revolution, shaping it as a distinctly American story. But history rarely fits within neat borders.

As Washington’s army faced a desperate powder shortage, Franklin and his agents signalled that provisions and political favour awaited any community willing to aid the Continental cause. Tucker, well attuned to the shifting tides of trade and opportunity, swiftly seized the moment, aligning Bermudian pragmatism with American necessity.

The plan was as simple as it was audacious. On the night of August 14, 1775, raiders entered the British magazine at St. George’s, eased more than 100 barrels of gunpowder to the shoreline, and ferried them to waiting vessels bound for rebel ports like Charleston and Philadelphia. Though Governor George James Bruere thundered against the “audacious piece of villainy” in Bermuda, no culprits were caught — and the powder reached American hands when it mattered most. Two months later, the Continental Congress carved out a trade exception for Bermuda, tacitly acknowledging the island’s timely “support” and the quiet diplomacy that had made it possible.

Seen through this lens, the American Revolution stops being a solely American story and emerges not simply as a revolution but as a civil war that expanded into a British Atlantic struggle. What followed was a story in which governors, merchants, free and enslaved mariners, enslaved labourers, and diplomats alike tested the limits of imperial authority. Tucker’s dealings with Franklin weren’t merely personal; they were symptomatic of a broader pattern in which local elites across the Atlantic weighed loyalty against livelihood.

This Atlantic framing also recovers people too often left at the margins. Bermuda’s maritime world depended heavily on enslaved black mariners, whose skill and labour powered the vessels that carried both legal cargo and contraband. Some in turn leveraged their maritime mobility to earn money, transmit news, or escape and confront the laws designed to restrict their movement and agency. When we speak of a midnight raid and barrels of gunpowder, we should also reflect on those who threaded the dangerous waters — participants in a struggle for liberty from which they were largely excluded.

The end of the Revolution did not close Bermuda’s strategic chapter. In fact, Britain’s defeat and the birth of the United States transformed Bermuda into a garrisoned island in the 19th century. The construction of Royal Naval Dockyard turned the island into a keystone of British imperial defence, a link between Britain’s Canadian bases and its Caribbean stations, and a strategic watch point over the newly independent republic.

As the United States approaches 250 years since its founding, widening the lens does not diminish Lexington or Philadelphia; rather, it enriches them. It reminds us that the Revolution’s fate could have turned based on relationships forged across oceans, on islands where quiet diplomacy carried as far as cannon fire. On this small island, caught between empires, history was made in whispers and waves.

Bermuda’s story is one of people, movement, and connection across time. At the National Museum of Bermuda (NMB), visitors can explore the island’s early colonial history and the many communities that have made Bermuda their home over the centuries.

The NMB is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (last admission at 4 p.m.). Visit https://nmb.bm/ book-visit for more information.

NMB is a nongovernment, not-for-profit Bermuda Registered Charity No. 136.

A Landmark th a Past

Shop, stroll, and savour CENTURIES OF HISTORY beneath the ICONIC TWIN TOWERS.

Clocktower Shopping Mall

ising proudly above historic Royal Naval Dockyard, Clocktower Shopping Mall is more than just a shopping destination — it’s a testament to Bermuda’s rich maritime past.

The striking two-towered structure, once a vital part of Britain’s naval stronghold in the Atlantic, has stood the test of time, weathering both the elements and the evolution of the island itself.

Today’s Clocktower Shopping Mall is a vibrant marketplace where history meets modern charm, inviting visitors to explore its unique blend of high-end retailers, local artisans, and island-inspired souvenirs. Whether browsing for handmade crafts, indulging in sweet treats, or simply soaking in the historic ambience, this iconic landmark offers an unforgettable Bermudian shopping experience.

DID YOU KNOW?

// Clocktower

Shopping Mall is a vibrant marketplace where history meets modern charm, inviting visitors to explore its unique blend of highend retailers, local artisans, and islandinspired souvenirs.

Built to Last

In the late 1700s, Britain recognised the strategic positioning of Bermuda in relation to the United States, and the Royal Navy purchased 200 acres of land on Ireland Island. In 1809, they broke ground on what would become the North America and West Indies Station. The two-storey Great Eastern Storehouse — now known as the Clocktower building — was added in 1856 once the Dockyard was fully operational.

Clocktower Shopping Mall was one of four massive storehouses built at the time, alongside the Great Northern, Southern, and Western Storehouses. These vast structures stored everything from sails and rigging to weapons and provisions, while the upper floor housed the offices of the Dockyard’s Commissioner, later Captain-in-Charge.

A Clock with Character

Echoing the architectural style of the naval bakery at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Malta — both designed by William Scamp, a civilian architect behind several Admiralty projects, including Britain’s Chatham and Portsmouth Dockyards — the Clocktower commands attention with its imposing silhouette. Its three-foot-thick limestone walls were built to withstand cannon fire and have endured decades of hurricane-force winds and salt-laden air.

The southern tower features a four-faced clock affectionately dubbed the “four-faced liar.” After years of wear and tear, it was notorious for displaying slightly different times on each face, until 2017, when it was restored by the Electric Time Company of Massachusetts — the same experts behind Bermuda’s most modern tower clock at Chubb Insurance headquarters on Pitts Bay Road in the City of Hamilton.

Clocktower Shopping Mall

The northern tower tells a different story. Its singlefaced clock once displayed the time of the next high tide, a crucial detail for Dockyard operations. This face is also a modern replacement, as the original clock was removed in 1984 and put on display at the National Museum of Bermuda (located in The Keep). Originally built in 1856 by John Moore & Sons, Clerkenwell, London, the Victorian clock was restored in 2019 by Dr. Edward Cloutman, an antiquarian horologist who first repaired the clock in 2006. It undergoes a regular strict checking, oiling, greasing, and cleaning schedule, dictated by Dr. Cloutman, which ensures the antique remains something to set your watch by, chiming every 15 minutes, and accurate to onetenth of a second, accounting for minor variation caused by humidity.

passed to the West End Development Corporation (WEDCO), tasked with repurposing the historic structures while preserving their architectural integrity. The Clocktower storehouse was converted and reopened as a shopping mall in 1990, with the upper floor now housing offices for the Bermuda Land Management Corporation (BLMC), which oversees the preservation of the mall and the wider Dockyard’s historic elements, ensuring visitors can experience and learn about the site’s unique 200-year history.

BEST T-SHIRTS ON ISLAND

THE AUTHENTIC REBECCA SINGLETON

From modernising Bermuda shorts to building a global lifestyle brand, Rebecca Singleton blends island heritage with contemporary design.

THE ICONIC FASHION STAPLE synonymous with Bermuda’s identity continues to flourish, both at home and abroad, thanks to the vision of TABS Bermuda Founder and Creative Director Rebecca Singleton.

Surprisingly, Singleton did not set out to embark on a fashion career. Despite taking a short course in fashion at Central Saint Martins in London, her studies in the U.K. were focused on English, drama, and classical theatre. A creative at heart, she first aspired to work in marketing — the art of building brands.

Once back home in her native Bermuda, however, she observed that the classic Bermuda shorts for sale in traditional department stores were lacking. “I felt Bermuda needed a more modern, elevated version of the Bermuda short,” she explained. “Less souvenir, more lifestyle brand. Something refined but still very island.”

Without any formal training in the garment industry, Singleton jumped in and started teaching herself the ropes by travelling overseas, visiting factories, and observing production.

As a brand, TABS Bermuda (which stands for The Authentic Bermuda Shorts) are distinctive. They instantly evoke Bermuda’s culture and natural beauty via custom colourways and refined craftsmanship that takes place overseas, mostly in Portugal.

Singleton is known for her signature knack for selecting only the most Bermudian hues for each season of her garments. “It’s instinctive. I’m always looking at the ocean, the houses, sunsets, boats. If a colour feels like it belongs here but still feels fresh, that’s usually the one.”

The TABS Bermuda Spring 2026 collection is called Song of the Sea. “It’s inspired by the allure of the ocean — its beauty, its mystery, and that quiet pull that draws you in,” shares Singleton. “It reflects the island’s deep connection to the water, interpreted in a fresh, modern way.”

In addition to shorts, TABS Bermuda markets additional product lines that feature textile prints by local artists, including Meredith Andrews, Graham Foster, and Christina Sgobba. “I look for artists who understand story and place,” she said. “The print has to feel layered — not just pretty but meaningful.”

Most recently, Singleton and her wholly Bermudian team have created a new line for body and home that similarly blends artistry with nature. “Isla Botanica is my new luxury wellbeing brand. It’s island-inspired, sensory, and all natural — candles, diffusers, bath, and body. The idea is that paradise is a breath away.”

Regarding the future of TABS Bermuda, she has a clear vision for expanding “carefully and intentionally.” With a brick-and-mortar shop already open in the Cayman Islands, an international online presence, and product placement in boutiques along the U.S. East Coast, she is now delving into “opportunities emerging across the Caribbean.” Her goal is to “share Bermuda’s lifestyle globally without losing what makes it authentic.”

Though her role keeps her busy, as a mother of three young boys, Rebecca Singleton juggles work and home with intention, grounding herself in presence and purpose. Whether designing, collaborating with local artists, or expanding TABS Bermuda, it’s that blend of creativity, connection, and authenticity that continues to shape her journey — and define the soul of TABS Bermuda.
