FIVE DECADES OF WEDDING FLOWERS

Timeless advice from Demco Florist

WEDDING TRENDS MAY CHANGE, but beautiful flowers remain one of the most memorable elements of any celebration. As Bermuda's oldest flower shop, Demco Florist has spent more than five decades helping couples bring their wedding visions to life through thoughtful floral design.

“Over the years we’ve seen wedding styles evolve dramatically,” says Elizabeth Blankendal of Demco Florist. “From formal, traditional arrangements to today’s more natural and personalized designs, couples are increasingly looking for flowers that reflect their own story and style”

While trends come and go, Elizabeth believes the most successful weddings share a common thread: intentional design. Rather than focusing on every corner of a venue, she encourages

couples to prioritize the areas guests and photographers will notice most.

“Bridal bouquets, ceremony backdrops, reception tables, and guest arrival spaces often create the biggest impact,” she says.

“Thoughtful placement allows couples to create a beautiful atmosphere while staying mindful of their budget.”

Demco also encourages couples to embrace seasonal blooms whenever possible. Selecting flowers that are naturally available during the wedding season can enhance quality, improve availability, and often provide greater value. Bermuda’s unique climate also offers opportunities to incorporate local elements that help create a genuine sense of place.

For Elizabeth, timeless wedding flowers are never about following the latest trend.

“The weddings people remember most are the ones that feel authentic,” she says. “Flowers should help create an emotional connection and contribute to the overall feeling of the day.”

With decades of experience serving local and destination couples alike, Demco continues to blend trusted expertise with contemporary floral design. Years of working alongside planners, venues, and wedding professionals have given the team valuable insight into anticipating challenges, solving problems

creatively, and guiding couples through the planning process with confidence.

“Beautiful flowers, thoughtful design, and expert guidance never go out of style,” Elizabeth says. “Our goal is to help every couple create a celebration that feels meaningful, personal, and unforgettable.”

After more than 50 years, Demco Florist remains committed to transforming wedding visions into floral experiences that couples and guests will remember long after the celebration ends.

ANIK & PETER

APRIL 26, 2026

ANIK AND PETER MET DURING AN OCTOPUS RESEARCH INTERNSHIP

in Woods Hole, Mass. The two bonded over their mutual love for the ocean, Studio Ghibli movies, and books. After the internship, Anik joined Peter in Boston, where she earned her master’s degree in marine biology. The couple continued working together in the same research lab with a variety of marine animals.

“Anik has family in Bermuda and has been visiting since she was a little girl,” says Peter. “She learned to scuba dive while visiting the island and has fond memories of playing in the sand with her cousin. Three months after we started dating, I flew to Bermuda for Christmas to meet Anik’s family for the first time, and I fell in love with the island as well. Multiple incredible return visits made Bermuda an obvious choice for our wedding.”

Peter shares his thoughts on the couple’s wedding vendors.

“On our very first trip to Bermuda, we visited Bermuda Botanical Gardens and absolutely loved it,” says Peter. “It was fitting that we celebrated our big day in one of the first places we visited together. We suggest that every couple get a few Polaroid cameras and some film and set up a station alongside a guest book. It was so nice to have both professional and candid photos of everyone who attended.”

FLOWERS: DEMCO

“Marguerite was so kind and helped us put together some great floral pieces for the wedding. Anik's bouquet was perfect!”

PHOTOGRAPHY: MOONGATE PRODUCTIONS

“Jamie is an expert and his photos are proof of that. He knows so much about weddings and we would have been lost without him! Professional, organized, and a joy to work with.”

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: THE BOTANIST CAFE & GARDEN LOUNGE

“Pete and the rest of the team at The Botanist know how to put on an incredible party. They were so fun to work with and truly care about all the small details. Working with them made the whole process run incredibly smoothly. We can’t thank them enough! The food and drinks at the Botanist were incredible. Instead of a formal sit-down dinner, we wanted a more casual atmosphere. We had walking appetizers and a few food stations around the rose garden. Everything was so delicious! We had a mix of older and younger guests at the party, so at 9:30 p.m. about half of the guests left while the rest went to the whiskey vault of the Botanist for an ‘after party’ including whiskey tasting and the biggest charcuterie spread we’ve ever seen! It was the perfect ending to an already perfect day.”

COURTNEY & TOM

APRIL 25, 2026

PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEOGRAPHY:

AARON DESILVA

“I had been following Aaron’s work for some time. I am obsessed with his style: his composition, his treatment of colour, and the authenticity of the moments he captures. It was a non-negotiable for us and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Aaron also brought a great sense of ease to both Tom and I on the day of our wedding, gently guiding us throughout the day and thankfully insisting on a quick beach shoot during dinner. He was supported by his amazing second shooter, his wife Danika Lee, as well as Dion Greene, who tackled videography. A complete dream team that completely nailed it!”

COURTNEY AND TOM MET IN 2021 when the two were both “new” to the island. Tom had just moved from Boston for his job in reinsurance, while Courtney, a Bermuda native, had just moved back after working in London for several years. At the urging of three separate friends, Courtney and Tom met over Cup Match weekend in 2021 and they hit it off immediately.

“Things became much more serious — moving in together, getting a golden retriever named Finn, and enjoying

amazing travel around the world, from Morocco to Italy and France to South Africa,” says Courtney. “The proposal was done much closer to home in early April 2025 on our back patio surrounded by flowers and candles. With help from two great friends, Tom really nailed it with a softness and intimacy that influenced our wedding flowers and decor less than a year later.”

Courtney shares her thoughts on the couple’s wedding vendors.

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: HAWKINS ISLAND AT THE WATERFRONT GROUP

“We knew we wanted something a bit more outside the box than a traditional club wedding, and after touring many venues in Bermuda, we settled on Hawkins Island. Tom and I love a good party and the island was large enough to accommodate all of our guests, and had different areas that made each part of the day feel really unique and special. Cocktails were held on the lawn of the Guard Tower, complete with a custom Crown & Anchor table made by Tom and I. After cocktails, it was down to the Hawkins Dock for first dances, speeches and dinner. To open the dance floor, we worked closely with the Waterfront Team and Swan Pyrotechnics to treat our guests to an amazing fireworks show over Hamilton Harbour — the perfect thing to jumpstart the party!”

CATERING & CAKE: FOURWAYS CATERING / MEF

“Fourways Catering created a wonderful mix of Bermudian and American favourites, and their pastry chef made our gorgeous four-layer funfetti and chocolate fudge wedding cake with white icing and flowers. It came out exactly as we envisioned, was delicious to boot, and the service throughout was impeccable.”

JESS & JACK

MARCH 28, 2026

JESS AND JACK MET IN BERMUDA through the sport of field hockey. Jess had played for years while Jack was new to the sport.

“We went to a few parties together and got to know each other,” says Jess. “We started going out on a few dates around the summer of 2018, and we've been together ever since. We moved in together just before Covid, and even that didn't put us off each other.”

Getting married in Bermuda was a natural choice for the couple. Jess is born and raised Bermudian, and Jack, originally from Cornwall, UK, has lived and worked on the island since 2017.

Jess shares her thoughts on the couple’s wedding vendors.

FLOWERS:

SALLY SEWELL, THE FLOWER MARKET AT MILES

“I work closely with Sally through The Waterfront Group, so it was an easy decision to have her involved. We gave Sally very little direction and she somehow turned a handful of ideas into something even better than imagined. She perfectly balanced an elevated look with the relaxed feel we wanted for the day. Using a collection of small potted plants as part of the design, she made everything feel intentional and beautiful. The bouquets were stunning, and as always, she was an absolute pleasure to work with.”

PHOTOGRAPHY: FIANDER FOTO

“I had worked with Melanie previously through my events background, so we already knew the quality of her work. That familiarity also made us feel comfortable having her there on such an important day. Melanie and her husband Jim were wonderful to work with, and they spent the entire day with us capturing all the moments that mattered.”

OFFICIANT: BISHOP NICHOLAS DILL

“Bishop Dill was wonderful throughout the entire process. We had two sessions with him before the wedding, which we found incredibly beneficial. They helped us feel more comfortable and prepared without ever feeling overly formal or overly religious. Just as importantly, it allowed him to get to know us as a couple. That connection came through during the ceremony, where he was able to add a bit of humour and banter that felt very natural and helped put us both at ease during what can otherwise be a daunting moment in front of so many people.”

WEDDING PLANNER: KATHLEEN DODWELL, EVENT SOLUTIONS

“We can’t say enough good things about Kathleen. She always made us feel at ease, especially during those moments when we were stressed or unsure of what needed to happen next. She kept us calm, guided us through everything we needed to do, and took care of literally everything else. Having her in our corner made the entire process so much more enjoyable.”

PERFORMERS: GOMBEY EVOLUTION

“We wanted to include something uniquely Bermudian, especially for our guests who had travelled from overseas. For us, there was no better way to do that than with the Gombeys. The team worked directly with our wedding planner and the dancers interacted so well with our guests, and brought an incredible energy to the celebration. If you have the opportunity to include Gombeys in your event, we highly recommend it.”

PHOTOS

RECEPTION: MOONGATE BREWERY

“Moongate was the perfect setting for us. There’s plenty of outdoor space by the water for eating, drinking, and dancing. We also chose Moongate because it has plenty of indoor space, which provided the perfect plan B if the weather hadn’t been so kind to us. St. George’s and Moongate provided the perfect location as it was walking distance from St. Peter’s Church, where we had our ceremony, and it also allowed for many overseas guests to stay in Airbnbs and hotels nearby, which was super helpful for transportation.”

MUSIC: DJ RUSTY G

“We like to think Rusty is the king of reading a crowd. We never had any concerns about the music because we knew he’d get it right. We gave him a fairly simple list of artists and songs, and he absolutely delivered. Guests were still talking about the music after the wedding and even reached out to tell us how great he was.”

The Wedding Wellness Timeline

In the months leading up to the ceremony, treatments designed to improve skin quality have become increasingly popular. Skin boosters, for example, are often scheduled in stages to create subtle, healthy-looking radiance.

“The result is healthy, glowing skin that looks beautiful both in person and on camera,” Carmel says.

PLANNING A BERMUDA WEDDING involves more than choosing the perfect venue or floral design. Increasingly, couples are building wellness and self-care into their preparations, creating a timeline that supports both relaxation and confidence in the months leading up to the big day.

For brides, skincare is often one of the first wellness priorities to consider. A long-term approach delivers the most natural results, says Carmel Baxter Wilks of The Skin Company. For best results, brides are encouraged to begin their skin journey at least six months before the big day.

Starting early allows time to address concerns gradually while avoiding the pressure of last-minute treatments. Many clinics now use advanced skin analysis to measure hydration, pigmentation, oil production and fine lines, helping to create a personalised treatment plan. Follow our timeline to LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST on your big day

Wedding preparations are also an opportunity to focus on beauty and self-care beyond skincare. According to Polished Bermuda, where brides and their bridal parties can enjoy an afternoon of nails and cocktails while preparing for the celebration, brides should begin planning nail, lash and brow appointments several months in advance to create a seamless beauty schedule. Starting early allows time for trial appointments and refining a preferred look while maintaining treatments consistently and avoiding lastminute stress. By developing personalised plans for bridal nails, brows and lashes, beauty professionals can help brides feel polished, confident and wedding-ready.

HELPING

Wellness planning can also include cultural beauty traditions. Jasmine Tull of SunKissed Hair & Henna recommends that brides interested in henna or jagua begin discussing designs with their artist well before the wedding.

“We discuss the bride’s ideas and create a sketch of what the design can ideally look like,” she says.

Designs can be applied to the hands, feet, back or other areas of the body.

Jasmine notes that henna, traditionally known as mehndi, has been used in wedding celebrations for centuries and often incorporates symbolic elements. To achieve the best results, she recommends scheduling henna application one-and-a-half to two days before the wedding, after waxing, massages, scrubs, and manicure or pedicure appointments. Jagua, a fruit-based body art product that leaves a blueblack stain, is typically applied one to two days before the ceremony.

Sunkissed

Preparation is no longer an afterthought; it’s a key part of the celebration.”

“Traditionally, brides enjoy a henna night with their bridal party, family and friends,” she says.

While bridal beauty has long been a focus, grooms are increasingly embracing wellness as part of their own preparation. Dion Furbert of Modern Gent recommends beginning grooming services four to five weeks before the wedding, with a final haircut about a week before the ceremony and finishing touches in the days leading up to it.

“Preparation is no longer an afterthought; it’s a key part of the celebration,” he says.

Ultimately, a thoughtful wellness timeline helps couples arrive at their wedding feeling relaxed, confident, and fully present.

HILARY & JOHN

JUNE

28, 2025

JOHN AND HILARY MET IN 2021 on Bumble shortly after John had, coincidentally, moved into the same South Florida apartment building as Hilary. The two met in person with friends in tow at Vinos Wine Bar.

“We hit it off, started dating, and four months later, we ended up moving in together,” says Hilary. “Three years later, we got

engaged. We knew we wanted a destination wedding, and after a lot of research, we found Bermuda. A friend of mine had recently attended a wedding there and spoke so highly of it. Our wedding was also our first time visiting the island.”

Hilary shares her thoughts on the couple’s wedding vendors.

AMANDA TEMPLE
GAVIN HOWARTH (6)

“Bermuda is the most beautiful, magical destination,” says Hilary. “It was our fairytale wedding. The pink-sand beaches were absolutely stunning, and I couldn’t imagine a more perfect place to get married. We feel so lucky to have celebrated there with all of our family and friends.”

MUSIC: AllStarDJ

PHOTOGRAPHY: GAVIN HOWARTH

“We booked Gavin’s 8-hour package and he did a fantastic job capturing the entire day. He made everyone feel comfortable and the photos turned out beautiful. We are so happy with how everything was captured.”

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: PRINCESS HOTEL & BEACH CLUB

“Our DJ was amazing and kept the dance floor packed all night. The music was perfect and they really helped make the reception so much fun.”

“It truly felt like something out of a dream. The beach was completely secluded and private, creating a romantic and intimate setting for our wedding night. The scenery was stunning — the ocean, sunset, and natural beauty made for incredible photos and an unforgettable backdrop. The staff at the Princess Hotel were incredibly accommodating and wonderful to work with throughout the entire process. During cocktail hour we experienced a torrential rain downpour, but their team quickly wiped down the dance floor, tables, and reception area just in time for the reception to begin, so we didn’t miss a beat. The food was also amazing, and the bartenders were so fun and personable with our guests. They really added to the fun atmosphere of the night. Overall, it was truly a perfect destination wedding venue.”

Your Bermuda Wedding Guide

Your essential guide to TYING THE KNOT in Bermuda

Bermuda is one of the most romantic places on Earth to say “I do.” To make your dream wedding here legal and stress-free, follow these updated steps, straight from official sources and government guidance.

Step 1: File your notice of intended marriage.

This is the first and most important legal step to get married in Bermuda.

• Download the Notice of Intended Marriage form or request it from the Registrar General’s office.

• The form must be printed on white legalsize paper (8.5 x 14 in).

• Mail the completed form to the Registrar General with a cashier’s cheque or bank draft payable to the Accountant General, Hamilton, Bermuda (the total fee for the marriage licence and certificate is about $418 USD/BMD).

• Include copies of final divorce decrees or death certificates if either of you was previously married.

Address: Registrar General, Government Administration Building, 30 Parliament Street, Hamilton HM 12, Bermuda

What happens next:

• Your notice will be published (typically in local official publications).

• After a ~15-day waiting period, the Registrar General will issue your marriage licence, valid for three months.

• You or a designated person can pick up the licence at the Registry.

FROM TOP: ALEXANDER MASTERS, ISTOCK PHOTO / NHURI BASHIR

Step 2: Pick where you’ll say “I do.”

You can have a civil ceremony at the Registry General Office (Marriage Room) or at many beautiful outdoor spots across the island — beaches, parks, gardens, etc. — as long as you obtain written permission from the property owner or manager and inform the Registrar. Popular public venues include places like Admiralty House Park, Botanical Gardens, Horseshoe Bay Beach, Warwick Long Bay Beach, and others. A civil ceremony with the Registrar off-site typically requires an additional $450 BMD submitted at least 14 days before your date. Ceremonies at the Registry themselves or smaller settings may have distinct fees. Always check with the Registrar’s office for the latest schedule.

You may also plan a church or clergy-led ceremony with a registered Marriage Officer. If outside the Registry, you’ll need to hire a registered Marriage Officer (often a clergy member) and have two adult witnesses (18+) present.

Step 3: Who can officiate and who must be there?

Civil ceremonies can be conducted by the Registrar General or, in some cases, an Assistant Registrar. Religious ceremonies must be performed by a registered Marriage Officer (clergy authorised by the government). Two adult witnesses (18+) must be present and sign your marriage certificate. Registry staff can serve as witnesses on weekdays if you request this in advance; for weekend ceremonies, you’ll need to provide your own.

After

the Ceremony

Once you’re legally married, your Marriage Officer must complete and file the Particulars of Marriage with the Registrar. The official marriage certificate will then be issued, typically within about 10 days of filing. If you ever need additional copies later, these can be ordered from the Registrar General as well.

SARA & JAMES

JUNE 20, 2020

WHEN SARA MOVED TO BERMUDA FROM VANCOUVER, Canada nearly a decade ago, she expected to stay for a two-year stint working at an audit firm on island. What she wasn’t expecting was to meet Bermudian born-and-raised James within a month of arriving.

“Although our relationship was quickly put to the test when James moved to New York City for work, we knew we were right for each other and got engaged less than three years later,” says Sara.

The couple originally planned to wed in Canada, but the COVID-19 pandemic inspired a change of plans. Sara and James pivoted to a small elopement ceremony in Bermuda with members of James’s family to bear witness.

Sara shares her thoughts on the couple’s wedding vendors.

CEREMONY: COX PRIVATE PROPERTY

“James’s family, including his father and two uncles, own plots of land along Orange Valley Road in Devonshire that have been within the family for hundreds of years. The civil ceremony was held in a gorgeous citrus orchard, where James’s aunt had taken cuttings from her garden to use as decoration. As part of the ceremony, we planted a Bermudian cedar tree, a tradition for the family, and the tree has since flourished — a sign of the strength of our marriage. The marriage certificate was signed, and champagne toasts were made at Orange Valley, an almost 200-year-old house where uncle of the groom and local historian John Cox resides.”

PHOTOGRAPHER/EVENT COORDINATOR: GAVIN HOWARTH

“Gavin and his assistant, Emma Sims, were extremely organized and responsive. As part of Gavin’s elopement package, they arranged a local officiant and sourced bouquets and boutonnieres from a local florist. On the day of the ceremony, Gavin was punctual and professional and took beautiful pictures that we were able to share with family members who were unable to attend.”

RECEPTION: CORAL BEACH CLUB

“Following the ceremony, our guests were transported to Coral Beach Club for a beautiful dinner on the outdoor terrace. The service was phenomenal and the wine was flowing, which no doubt encouraged every guest to make a speech that evening.”

TRANSPORTATION: PIECE OF THE ROCK LIMO COMPANY

“This is a father-and-son business owned by Sam Matthews, Sr. and Sam Matthews, Jr., who offer by far the most professional service on island. They’ve been transporting James’s family around Bermuda for many years. Sam Jr. picked us up to take us to Orange Valley for the ceremony and drove us to Coral Beach for the dinner and celebration.”

ZAKIYA & MILTON

APRIL 14, 2024

ZAKIYA AND MILTON MET IN BERMUDA THROUGH MUTUAL FRIENDS IN 2008. After welcoming two children, Milton decided it was time to begin a new chapter and he proposed to Zakiya in the comfort of the couple’s home with their children by their side. The couple chose to get married on their home island of Bermuda, where they’d be surrounded by their closest family and friends.

“Bermuda is more than just where we live; it’s where our

memories were made,” says Zakiya. “From childhood moments to teenage years, this island holds pieces of our story. There’s something incredibly meaningful about beginning a new chapter in a place already filled with nostalgia, comfort, and love. Celebrating our wedding in our hometown felt perfect — authentic, intimate, and deeply connected to who we are.”

Zakiya shares her thoughts on the couple’s wedding vendors.

CEREMONY: UNFINISHED CHURCH

“As a little girl, I always knew that when the day came for me to get married, I wanted it to be at the Unfinished Church. Even though I grew up in Sandys Parish, the Unfinished Church has always spoken for itself — effortlessly beautiful, timeless, and full of character. When I later moved to St. George’s, it felt like everything aligned. I knew then, without any doubt, that this was officially the place. The place where I wanted to begin the next chapter of my life. The place that held the magic, meaning, and beauty I had dreamed of since childhood.”

PHOTOGRAPHY: DONOVIN SEYMOUR

“Donovin captured both our engagement shoot and our wedding day photos, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We truly had no idea what locations we wanted for our wedding photos, but Donovin guided us effortlessly and made the entire process feel natural and exciting. We ended up doing our family photos at the Unfinished Church and our bridal party photos at the Rosewood Hotel, both stunning locations that brought our vision to life even better than we imagined. The pictures were beautiful and far exceeded my expectations. Donovin went above and beyond for us every step of the way, and we’re so grateful for his creativity, direction, and dedication. He didn’t just take photos — he captured the emotion, joy, and magic of our day.”

Wedding & Honeymoon

“Bermuda is a small island with high demand and limited resources, so early planning is essential,” says Zakiya. “Booking ahead helps you secure the vendors and venues you truly want before they’re unavailable. If you’re inviting guests from overseas, help them make the most of their trip by sharing local favorites such as Horseshoe Bay, Tobacco Bay, the Crystal Caves, or even a sunset cruise. Your wedding becomes more than just a ceremony — it becomes a mini-vacation your guests will never forget.”

CATERING: CHIKO’S CATERING

“They delivered an incredible Bermudian culinary experience from start to finish. From the happy hour bites to the three-course dinner, every dish was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and full of local flavor. We began with a flavorful fish chowder made with fresh local fish and served with a warm, homemade roll, followed by a tasty garden salad that was light, crisp, and refreshing. Dinner featured some of Bermuda’s favorite comfort foods, including mac and cheese, seasonal vegetables, lamb, local fish, and more dishes that brought authentic island flavor to our reception.”

WEDDING PLANNER: BRIDAL SUITE BERMUDA

“Nandi Outerbridge and her incredible team were truly amazing to work with from start to finish. Nandi handled both the ceremony and reception décor, and she brought my entire vision to life exactly as I imagined it. Nandi didn’t just plan our wedding; she understood it. She saw my vision from the very beginning and carried it through flawlessly to the end. One memory I will never forget is when I realized I had forgotten my garter at the hotel. Without hesitation, her team went back and retrieved it for me. That level of care, attention to detail, and genuine support meant the world to me on such an important day. I’m forever grateful for Nandi and the Bridal Suite team. They helped make our day unforgettable.”

RECEPTION: PIER SIX

“This was the perfect choice for our reception. The venue had recently been renovated, giving us a fresh, modern, and beautifully clean space to transform and decorate exactly as we envisioned. Its open layout allowed us to bring our ideas to life effortlessly. Another major reason we chose Pier Six was its size and location. It offered a spacious setting right in the heart of Hamilton, making it convenient for all our guests. With ample parking and easy access, it made the evening smooth and stress-free for everyone attending.”

Wedding Shopping, Bermuda Style

Thoughtful finds, island treasures and UNFORGETTABLE GIFTS FOR EVERY CHAPTER of your wedding journey.

WEDDING SHOPPING TODAY extends far beyond selecting a dress or checking items off a registry. Couples are increasingly looking for ways to reflect their personalities, create memorable experiences for guests and build a home together, all while adding meaningful touches to their celebrations.

For many couples, gift registries remain an important part of the planning process, but the options have evolved. According to Deanne Hart, Head of Marketing & Communications at 59 Front, modern registries are designed around the way couples live and entertain. Traditional china and crystal remain popular, but many brides are also choosing home décor pieces such as linens, candles, picture frames and accent pillows. Guests benefit from a wide range of price points, and gifts can be coordinated for delivery after the wedding, making the process easy for everyone involved.

Our own shop line, Tuck Shop Collection is a reflection of all of our favorite objects, and everyday rituals & delights.

Tuck Shop II, better known as TSII is tucked into the Masterworks Museum in the beautiful Botanical Gardens. A little sister of a shop, with a lovely personality of its own. It boasts the same mindful curation and vibe, but with brands that are exclusive to that location. More to discover, more to love.

Locally inspired gifts have become especially popular for destination weddings and bridal parties. Walker Christopher Manager Miranda Medeiros says many wedding guests choose the company’s annual sterling silver Christmas ornaments as keepsakes for newlyweds. The ornaments, which feature Bermuda-inspired designs such as horse and buggies, dinghies, palmetto trees and moongates, can be custom engraved with the couple’s names and wedding date. Because each ornament is specific to the year it was created and marked with Bermuda and a sterling silver hallmark, they become meaningful reminders of both the wedding and the island. Walker Christopher also offers Bermuda-themed jewellery in gold and sterling silver for brides, grooms and members of the wedding party.

Thoughtful details can also be found in edible gifts and keepsakes. Alicia Tucker of Tuck Shop says couples are increasingly drawn to custom treats that add a personal touch to wedding events. Beautifully decorated cookies featuring names, dates and unique designs have become popular mementos for showers, welcome bags and receptions. Beyond baked goods, shoppers are gravitating toward products that reflect values such as wellness, sustainability and craftsmanship, with many couples choosing gifts and favours that feel both beautiful and purposeful.

Wedding shopping can also include a more playful side. Onyx, senior sales associate at Eve’s Garden, says friends often purchase lingerie as

gifts for brides, while couples themselves are increasingly interested in products designed to be enjoyed together. Appcontrolled accessories, games and massage products are among the most popular items, reflecting a broader trend toward giving experiences rather than traditional gifts.

Whether selecting home décor, personalised keepsakes, locally crafted jewellery, edible treats or something a little more unexpected, today’s couples are redefining wedding shopping. The focus is less on following a prescribed checklist and more on choosing items that celebrate their personalities, strengthen connections and create memories that will last long after the wedding day.

TAKE YOUR PIC

Long after the flowers wilt and the cake is gone, your wedding photographs remain. Choosing the right photographer is therefore one of the most meaningful decisions couples make when planning a Bermuda wedding. While packages and pricing matter, experienced photographers say the process should begin with something far more personal: style.

“Photography should be viewed as a creative service, not as a product,” says Bermuda photographer Amanda Temple. “You are selecting an artist to capture your day.”

Photographer Melanie Fiander agrees that couples should first ensure they love a photographer’s editing style. Whether the work is natural and true-to-colour, light and airy, or dark and moody, she says couples should understand that a photographer’s portfolio reflects the style they will receive.

Amanda encourages couples to look beyond a handful of standout images and assess a photographer’s work as a whole.

“Look at how the images make you feel,” she says. “If a package includes all the extras, it’s useless unless you love the photographs.”

“Photography should be viewed as a creative service, not as a product. You are selecting an artist to capture your day.”

When reviewing portfolios, photographer Donovin Seymour recommends paying attention to family and group portraits as well.

“Capturing family portraits is an important part of the day,” he says.

“You want to hire a photographer who can manage family portraits, which can be time-consuming and at times chaotic.”

Personality and connection matter too. Couples should feel comfortable with the photographer who will be by their side throughout the day. Melanie advises scheduling a phone or video call before booking to ensure personalities are a good fit.

“If the couple feels comfortable with the photographer, you’re

going to see it in their expression,” she says. “That level of comfort really shows in the images.”

Donovin believes the relationship goes even deeper.

“The photographer you choose should be a facilitator of the joy of your wedding day,” he says. “Many couples love the pictures I have taken before they have seen any

pictures because they loved the experience of capturing those pictures.”

Experience is another key consideration. Photographer Gavin Howarth suggests viewing a complete client gallery rather than relying on “hero images” posted online. He also recommends seeking feedback from wedding planners, florists and venues that regularly work with photographers.

During consultations, couples should discuss timelines, meaningful locations, and logistics. Donovin notes that incorporating iconic Bermuda locations can create images that reflect both the island and the couple’s story. He also recommends asking about backup equipment and image security to ensure important moments are protected.

Finally, be clear about package details including coverage hours, image delivery, and download rights. By focusing on style, experience, communication and connection, couples can confidently choose a photographer whose work they will treasure for years to come.

REECE & REAGAN

MAY 3, 2025

REECE AND REAGAN MET IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, when Reece was Reagan’s first customer on her first night working as a bartender in college.

“I finally agreed to go on a group date with him after months of him asking,” says Reagan. “He pursued me relentlessly back then, and honestly, he still does to this day.”

The couple decided on a Bermuda wedding after they first visited the island. The quick direct flight and the island’s people were big draws for the couple.

“I can’t even begin to describe the charm and charisma there,” says Reagan. “Everyone has personality for days. There’s a level of pride and class in Bermuda that you just don’t find elsewhere.”

Reagan shares her thoughts on the couple’s wedding vendors.

“We intentionally kept everything simple and intimate, allowing the island’s beauty to shine,” says Reagan. “I felt relaxed the entire week. My main advice for other couples is: don’t overschedule activities. Give your families time to breathe and enjoy life away from home. Bermuda is a place of respite. Let your guests truly indulge in that experience.”

“I sent Marguerite some insane inspiration pictures expecting a variation, but my wedding day altar had my jaw on the floor. She took my wildest dreams and made them a reality. She asked great questions I hadn’t even thought of. You can tell she is a seasoned vet.”

“Pictures aren’t my strong suit, but his sense of humour made me feel so comfortable. I let him take the lead on creative direction, and I’m so glad I did. He made so many decisions for me during the whirlwind of the day, and I am forever grateful for his brilliance. He truly is an artist.”

WEDDING PLANNER: MAGNOLIA ECHEVERRIA, ROSEWOOD BERMUDA — TUCKER’S POINT

“I get choked up even thinking about her. She is professional and amazing at her job, but above all, she really cares and takes you under her wing. On our first night, she found me and my sister at dinner all the way across the Rosewood campus just to say hello and give me a bear hug. I couldn’t have asked for a better planner.”

CELEBRATIONS Curated

Weddings in Bermuda have always been synonymous with beauty and elegance, but today’ s couples are redefining what makes a memorable dining experience.

Increasingly, wedding menus are becoming deeply personal, thoughtfully curated to reflect not only the setting but the couple themselves.

“Every conversation with a couple starts the same way: with a heartfelt congratulations,”says Andy Detzer, General Manager of Fourways Inn & Cottages. “From there, we focus on what

makes their story unique — favorite dishes, cultural influences, family traditions, or memorable meals from their travels.”

This shift toward personalization is driving one of the biggest trends in wedding dining: interaction. Live food stations, chef-attended experiences, and flexible service styles are replacing more traditional formats.

“Guests can customize their own Pad Thai, select ingredients for fresh pasta, or enjoy a sushi counter or churrasco station,”Andy explains. “This approach transforms dinner into an experience.”

The Botanist

CAFÉ & GARDE N LOUNGE

DISCOVER CHARM HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

Looking for Bermuda’s most talked about secret? The Botanist Café, just minutes from the City of Hamilton, offers fresh breakfasts, lunches, cheeky afternoon teas, and Sunday Sunshine sessions in a lush garden escape. Wander downstairs to find a cosy spot that feels like your own private speakeasy with unique mocktails and cocktails. Locals know it, visitors love it.

Pete Kyle of The Botanist has noticed a similar trend, particularly in garden settings.

“Guests are looking for less of a sit-down meal,” he says. “Eating, dancing, and socializing all at once seems to be the direction things are going.”

Bite-sized offerings, passed hors d’oeuvres, tasting stations, and mini dessert flights encourage guests to mingle while still enjoying exceptional food.

At Grotto Bay Beach Resort & Spa, couples are also seeking experiences that reflect their personalities. Claire-Anne Raynor, Catering Sales Manager, says customized cocktails and mocktails have become increasingly popular.

Weddings in Bermuda are transforming dining into a deeply personal, interactive experience—where menus reflect the couple’s story and guests enjoy customizing their meals, mingling with bite-sized offerings, and savoring unique culinary stations.

“These beverages are often inspired by the couple’s favorite drinks, meaningful memories, wedding theme, or color palette,” she says.

For food enthusiasts, elevated culinary experiences such as molecular cuisine and chef-attended stations are becoming sought-after additions to receptions.

While plated dinners remain popular, many couples are blending formats.

“We’re seeing more events begin with a plated first course for timing and flow, followed by buffet or food stations for the main course,” says Tim Ritchie, Catering Manager at Fourways Inn & Cottages.

Head Chef Shiva Ram Karki of Aurora at Newstead Hotel, sister restaurant to Blu Bar & Grill, notes that local flavours continue to play an important role.

“A combination of plated appetizer and main course followed by a dessert buffet combines the best of both worlds,” he says.

Experts agree that the best wedding menus begin with authenticity. Pete advises couples to focus on foods they genuinely enjoy rather than trying to please everyone. Claire-Anne recommends drawing inspiration from meaningful moments, whether it’ s a favourite travel destination, a first-date dinner, or family traditions.

In Bermuda, where the scenery already creates a lasting impression, a thoughtfully curated menu can become part of the story guests remember long after the celebration ends.

OLIVIA & CHRISTIAN

JUNE 21, 2025

OLIVIA AND CHRISTIAN ATTENDED HIGH SCHOOL TOGETHER in Princeton, New Jersey; but their paths didn’t cross in a meaningful way until a night out in their hometown bar, where they immediately hit it off. The relationship deepened during COVID, when Christian would visit Olivia frequently at her grandmother’s house, where she resided at the time. As the pandemic waned, the couple decided to “go all in,” says Olivia, and relocate to New York City together.

Olivia was excited to share Bermuda with Christian, the island where her grandparents built a home and where she spent idyllic

childhood summers playing on pink-sand beaches with her cousins and brother.

“It didn’t take much for Christian to fall in love with Bermuda,” says Olivia. “After spending more and more time there, year after year, his fondness for not only the island but also the community there grew deeper, to an extent that matches my own. It was this instinct and shared understanding that led him to propose to me in Bermuda, and that led us to know we’d be married there.”

Olivia shares her thoughts on the couple’s wedding vendors.

AMANDA TEMPLE(7)
“We got the chance to be ourselves,” Olivia says. “We laughed with our guests at our missteps, cried during toasts, and danced under the moon. Our friends at the Rosewood were so incredibly supportive of making this happen and I can’t express my love for these individuals enough.”

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: ROSEWOOD BERMUDA’S THE BEACH CLUB AT TUCKER’S POINT

“Choosing Rosewood Tucker’s Point for our wedding was the best decision. We worked side by side with Magnolia Echeverria to curate an elegant, warm, and welcoming experience for us, our family, and friends. The staff has an impeccable eye for detail, and we were very appreciative of their efforts on our behalf. Plus the food was fantastic!”

HAIR & MAKEUP:

BLUEPRINT HAIR STUDIO, SERENA BRANGMAN, APHRODITE

“Our hair and makeup team did not disappoint!”

“My mom and I had a clear vision of the creative direction we desired, and Helen Sawden executed the magic with her beautiful, ethereal design direction and floral arrangements. We wanted the ceremony to celebrate our marriage and also our connection to the Bermuda landscape. We asked Helen if she could create a silver birch arbour that would blend with the hues of the rocky banks along the sea. She imported the wood and did a beautiful job constructing exactly what we wanted. Helen also teamed up with Dawn at New Leaf design to create tropical arrangements of flowers, greens, and palms used to set the tone of celebrating the Bermuda landscape in various locations at the beach club. We were so happy with the soft, subtle hues set out on the tablescape.”

SAY ‘I DO ’

The Bermudian Way

Bermuda weddings are steeped in the island’s charm and symbolism.

One iconic island tradition is the Moon Gate — a circular stone arch that couples pass through for luck and happiness. Many couples also honor the island’s natural heritage by planting a cedar sapling together, symbolizing growth and enduring love.

Food and festivity often reflect local custom. It’s common to serve two cakes: one for the ceremony and another for a private celebration or the couple’s first anniversary. Jewelry choices lean toward

gold and silver, not only for elegance but as a nod to timelessness.

Timing matters too. Thursday weddings are traditional, originally chosen for good fortune and to avoid clashing with Sunday church services. No Bermuda celebration is complete without the vibrant rhythms of the Gombeys. These costumed dancers bring energy, color, and joyous spectacle, infusing ceremonies and receptions with unmistakable Bermudian flair.

Together, these traditions create a tapestry of cultural heritage, luck, and love that lasts a lifetime.

Gombeys, a treasured Bermudian cultural tradition, bring a lively energy to any celebration.

Bermuda’s Most Colorful Tradition

Gombeys are one of Bermuda's oldest and most treasured cultural traditions, with roots stretching back to the island's enslaved African population of the 18th and 19th centuries. Influenced by African, Caribbean, Native American and British military traditions, Gombey performances combine energetic drumming, intricate dance, and elaborate storytelling. People who were enslaved often wore masks to conceal their identities while celebrating and expressing resistance, and colonial authorities frequently restricted the performances. Today, the tradition is proudly preserved by family-based troupes who pass their music, choreography, and costume-making skills from one generation to the next.

Along with their vibrant costumes, many Gombey dancers carry a crop — a short, decorated whip made from braided strips of leather or fabric. The crop is used as a rhythmic prop, cracked or swung in time with the music to accentuate the choreography and add another layer of excitement to the performance. It is one of the distinctive elements that sets Bermuda's Gombey tradition apart and reflects the artistry and symbolism woven throughout this enduring cultural practice.

The distinctive crop is more than a prop—it is a rhythmic symbol of the artistry and heritage woven into every Gombey performance.
With every beat of the drum and crack of the crop, bermuda's living history comes vividly to life.
