FOREWORD

As this foreword takes shape on the journey back from the fall boat shows in Cannes and Monaco, the voices of yacht owners, charter guests, and industry friends remain fresh in mind. Conversations often turned to their yachting experiences – whether as an owner or a charterer – and what they truly love about life at sea. The answers were as varied as the yachts themselves, yet a common thread ran through them all: the moments created aboard. The quiet ritual of coffee at anchor. The laughter shared across the deck at sunset. The joy of waking each morning to a different horizon. These are the memories that endure long after the voyage ends.

The holiday season has a way of magnifying just how precious those moments are. While many picture December wrapped in cold weather and festive lights, more and more families are choosing to gather on the water – whether celebrating Christmas in the Caribbean, Hanukkah in the Indian Ocean, or welcoming the New Year beneath Bahamian skies. In this special Holiday issue of Navigator, charter season takes center stage. Inside, you will find curated experiences designed to match your charter personality, expert insights into the future of yachting, and of course, our edit of watches, jewelry, style, travel, and gifts – all with a holiday twist.

Wherever this holiday season finds you, wrapped in winter or bathed in sun, we hope these pages inspire you to celebrate in the best way possible: by spending time with those who matter most. From all of us at Northrop & Johnson, we wish you fair winds and joyful holidays.

Extraordinary Exteriors by F/YACHTING

F/YACHTING brings a refined, bespoke approach to the world of yachting, seamlessly merging its heritage in high-end interiors with innovative, durable solutions for exterior living. Each piece is individually crafted to meet the aesthetic vision and technical demands of each yacht, ensuring not only virtual harmony but also performance in the harshest marine environments.

With a growing portfolio of bespoke exterior projects, F/YACHTING continues to expand its capabilities in this space, offering clients the same meticulous attention to detail outdoors as they have long enjoyed inside. At the heart of this expansion lies a philosophy of co-creation – working closely with yacht designers, owners and shipyards to translate design intent into functional, enduring works of craftsmanship. Through its innovation hub, F/LAB, F/YACHTING fuses advanced technology with traditional artisan techniques, bringing complex ideas to life with precision and elegance. The latest example, a bespoke exterior coffee table, which debuted at the Northrop & Johnson estate at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, is the result of true co- creation between Verge Yacht Design and F/ YACHTING. Verge contributed the design vision, defining balanced proportions, fluid lines, and an architectural presence that structures outdoor space while inviting interaction.

Whether it’s an outdoor table, as showcased, a sculptural seating element, or multifunctional storage, each piece is engineered and built in-house. From robust metal substructures that ensure structural integrity during transport and installation, to marine-grade upholstery and finishes, every detail is considered. The F/LAB Exterior Lacquer Systems, developed specifically for wood and veneered surfaces, offers interiorquality finishes with marine resilience, available in both polished high gloss and matte variations.

F/YACHTING’s proprietary leather embossing technologies allow for a wide range of custom options, while its in-house upholstery division ensures precise execution, even on complex geometries. Integrated features, such as hidden drawers, sea-fastening solutions, and concealed mechanisms, demonstrate an elevated standard of engineering developed by F/YACHTING’s own technical department. Natural materials, such as stone and veneer, are adapted for outdoor use by F/LIST’s stone division, which incorporates lightweight construction methods and optional lighting features to enhance both form and function. Each project is more than just a piece of furniture – it is the result of dialogue, design, and craftsmanship converging to redefine the possibilities of exterior spaces aboard.

Jim Dixon

Studio Principal, Yachts & Aviation, Winch Design

Jim Dixon leads the Winch Design Yachts & Aviation team with boundless creativity and precision. Since 2004, his design expertise has shaped iconic projects, applying deep insight into trends to design yachts that perfectly balance luxury, lifestyle, and functionality.

Market Trends

How is the profile of the typical charter client evolving? Are you seeing a generational shift with more Gen Z and Millennial clients entering the market?

Sacha Charter has always been a multi-generational experience – the ultimate family holiday that unites grandparents, parents, and children. What’s evolving is the influence of younger clients who are bringing fresh energy and expectations to the market.

Graham We are seeing a marked increase in younger, tech-savvy clients – from gamers to cryptocurrency entrepreneurs – many of whom are shaping the charter experience in new and dynamic ways. In fact, the majority of our charterers in the past year have been from this demographic.

What are the biggest lifestyle or cultural trends you have witnessed shaping the future of yacht charter?

Sacha One of the most significant shifts in yacht charter has been the rise of seamless connectivity while cruising, led by Starlink. This technology has enabled guests to extend their time onboard, not only for leisure but increasingly as a base for remote work. Social media has also reshaped the industry, influencing a new generation of charterers, who see yachting as both an exclusive escape and a platform for self-expression. Yachting still delivers unrivaled privacy and seclusion, but in today’s world, many guests also want to share at least a glimpse of their extraordinary experiences with the wider world – and that balance between exclusivity and visibility is redefining the culture of yachting.

Graham Building on that, I’d say yachting is also evolving into a true family affair. Charters now cater more inclusively to all ages, with growing demand for children’s cabins, play areas, cooking classes, and intergenerational activities. At the same time, we’re seeing guests eager to go off the beaten track, moving beyond the traditional Mediterranean and Caribbean “Milk Run” to explore more remote, adventurous destinations.

Jim The family-driven shift is mirrored in yacht design. We are increasingly seeing requests for highly personalized layouts and multi-functional spaces that work for three generations cruising together. Large, formal entertaining rooms are being replaced by relaxed, open-plan areas with expansive glass that connects guests to the sea and the natural world around them. Clients are asking for more informal social spaces, closer to the water, for instance, a sushi bar near the fishing area or a teppanyaki table by the pool. We encourage owners to be confident enough not to conform to what was traditionally “expected” and choose what fits their lifestyle, from access for their pets to outdoor cinema screens. Yachts now lean toward the feel of a beach house, with fluid, well-focused spaces and expansive beach clubs. This goes hand-in-hand with the growing importance of health and wellness, large spas featuring massage rooms, ice water plunge pools, steam rooms, and saunas. We have also been researching materials with better health credentials, creating interiors to support a clean-living environment, and using low-VOC (volatile organic compound) materials in some of our designs.

Tech & Innovation

From AI-curated itineraries to virtual yacht tours, how is technology changing the charter experience – for both guests and brokers?

Sacha AI-curated itineraries and virtual yacht tours have their place, but only to a point. Technology can support those who already know the market, yet it can’t capture the nuance – the vibe of a yacht, or the personal touch of securing the best table at a tucked-away restaurant. At its best, AI is a smart assistant, but the human element remains irreplaceable.

Graham I have seen first-hand how technology gives guests a clearer sense of where they are going and what they can experience on board. It’s refreshing to see guests more informed about destinations before arrival. AI has also proved useful in navigating complex rules and regulations, helping crew ensure smoother charters overall.

What role do you see AI and data playing in personalized charter planning over the next 5–10 years?

Sacha Ultra-personalization is already shaping charters, with brokers and crew anticipating everything from a client’s wine preference to their child’s breakfast smoothie. Technology will make this process increasingly seamless, but data protection and the culture of discretion mean a truly end-to-end automated journey is still some way off.

Graham A lot of captains are already using AI to lay the foundation for charter itineraries, which we then refine with personal knowledge and experience. Over the next 5 – 10 years, its role will only grow – supporting, rather than replacing, the human element.

Yacht Design & Onboard Experience

Are you seeing a shift in what charter clients want onboard – more wellness spaces, hybrid propulsion, or open plan spaces?

Sacha Wellness is no longer a luxury add-on, it’s expected. Clients want yoga decks, infrared saunas, plunge pools, and even clever convertible spaces – dining tables that turn into table tennis, hot tubs that can be transformed into ice baths –the options are endless. Hybrid propulsion is gaining traction not just for sustainability, but for the silence it offers when gliding through the water. And in terms of design, the old, compartmentalized interior has given way to open-plan layouts with neutral palettes, natural textures, and seamless indoor-outdoor living.

Graham There has been an increased usage of massage, beauty, and spa treatments onboard. Our hammam is running every day on trips now compared to rarely only a couple of years ago. Open spaces on new build yachts have become more popular. RIO is a very open boat in terms of her design and this seems to be quite attractive when clients are choosing us.

Jim Wellness onboard has transformed over the past decade, evolving from compact gyms and occasional spa treatments into a holistic experience. Today’s owners and charterers are more health-conscious than ever, often spending longer periods at sea and expecting wellness to be seamlessly integrated into daily life onboard. Beyond physical fitness, there is now equal emphasis on mental wellbeing, sleep optimization, nutrition, and mindfulness. Yoga, meditation, breathwork and sound healing are increasingly in demand, while wellness has also become a social activity, with lounges and shared spaces designed for relaxation between treatments.

Personalization is paramount, with wellness programs being curated to align with each guest’s unique needs, goals, and habits. Requests we have had recently include a cryotherapy chamber, hydrotherapy pool, thermal therapy pool, and experience shower. Innovative design features, such as saltinfused walls for respiratory health or pebble-foot pools overlooking the sea, underscore the trend toward immersive, restorative environments.

The shift is also architectural. Multi-functional wellness areas now define many new builds, reflecting a desire for yachts to feel like retreats. The double-deck beach house on one of our latest concept yachts, FUSION, is a perfect example of this philosophy in action. The innovative layout features a beach house across two decks, offering open and informal spaces and blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living with versatile sliding doors. The upper beach house, positioned on the main deck, is designed as a flexible space, offering interconnected leisure spaces, from the gym and yoga studio to a cleverly designed sunken seating area around the pool. Ultimately, wellness onboard has become not just an amenity but a defining part of the yachting lifestyle.

How are charter yachts adapting to offer more immersive, experience-led itineraries rather than just luxury accommodation?

Sacha The best yachts now think like boutique hotels. We are seeing dive instructors, kite-surf pros, drone pilots, and even musicians as part of the crew. If wellness practitioners, scientists, and personal instructors are not already onboard, clients can choose from a star-studded array of experts who can join them for part or all of a charter. We often build itineraries backward from a guest’s passion: a culinary tour of Sicily, a wellness escape through the Greek islands, or even conservation-focused charters in more remote locations. We used to say that the yacht was the destination, but increasingly it has become the launchpad into a much bigger experience.

Graham Itineraries today are far more immersive than a decade ago. Where once plans centered on the yacht with the occasional shore trip, now they blend seamlessly with bespoke land-based experiences – culinary adventures, wine tastings, cultural tours, or adrenaline-fueled excursions. The emphasis is on curating complete, multifaceted itineraries that combine the luxury of life onboard with discovery ashore.

Sustainability & Values

As sustainability becomes more important to charter clients, how is the industry responding – both in yacht design and operations?

Sacha Sustainability is becoming an increasingly visible part of the charter conversation, though for many guests it’s still a secondary factor rather than the deciding one. The real push is coming from builders, who are prioritizing reliability, sustainable materials, and improvements in noise, weight, and fuel efficiency. Operationally, we’re seeing steps like plastic-free provisioning, reef-safe sunscreens, and local conservation initiatives. While not every guest demands it yet, yachts that can credibly market their eco-credentials do gain a clear reputational edge.

Graham Many new builds are now offering hybrid diesel-electric systems, battery storage, and even hydrogen/fuel cell concepts. There are also optimized hull forms being designed made from lightweight materials to allow lower fuel consumption.

Jim Much of the real impact happens long before a yacht is chartered – when it’s being designed and built. Sustainability tends to start with the owners, particularly younger ones, who are increasingly requesting innovative approaches, from responsibly-sourced interiors to cutting-edge propulsion.

At Winch Design, we are seeing clients becoming more interested in using sustainable materials throughout interiors and we are committed to demonstrating that sustainability is synonymous with bespoke top-end design at the highest level. The storyline behind the material or finish becomes the unique selling point, which hooks our clients into the sustainable story. Whether it’s “corals” made from eggshell, leather alternatives, or teak-leaf veneers like BeLeaf, we believe that a material becomes more beautiful and indeed more valuable when it has a story of innovation and regeneration behind it.

Do you believe carbon-conscious chartering will become a major driver in client decision-making?

Sacha As mentioned previously, carbon-conscious chartering isn’t yet the primary driver in client decisions, but awareness is growing. We are seeing more conversations around hybrid systems and low-impact cruising, especially with younger clients. While luxury and experience remain the key motivators, sustainability is slowly moving to the forefront of the decisionmaking process.

Graham This has been happening for a number of years already. I recall we once won over a charter on a previous yacht for being able to create our own drinking water compared to our competitor yacht. Clients are becoming more attuned to climate impact and like to do what they can when choosing their yacht to charter.

New Destinations & Seasonality

Are you seeing a broadening of charter destinations beyond the traditional Mediterranean and Caribbean circuits?

Sacha The Mediterranean and Caribbean remain the charter heartlands, offering a diversity and concentration of experiences that no other regions can rival. That said, we are seeing a steady broadening of horizons. Polar and remote destinations have grown significantly over the past decade, with no sign of slowing, as clients seek adventure and exclusivity. Emerging regions like the Red Sea are investing heavily in infrastructure, but it will take time before they become truly established alternatives.

Graham A lot of people are more interested in polar and expedition growth. RIO is yet to move over to this side for chartering, but it is something we have discussed recently. We have also seen an increased demand for charters in Central and South America.

Are you seeing more “off-season” demands for charter? Is this due to warming temperatures or a growth in yearround cruising in remote regions?

Graham The Mediterranean summers have slowly become longer and longer over the years. It is no longer a shock to see some yachts operating charters into October and now relatively common to fill up September. Clients without younger children also prefer these times as they are not as busy as your July and August charters.

Final Thoughts

If you had to define the future of yacht charter in three words, what would they be?

Sacha Transformative. Connected. Liberating. Graham Experiential. Sustainable. Bespoke.

What’s one change you’d love to see in the industry over the next decade?

Sacha I’d like to see more exploration. Yachts uniquely combine restorative family time with the thrill of adventure, offering access to hard-to-reach places without compromise. With improved connectivity, drone provisioning, and other technologies on the horizon, I hope charterers continue to push the limits of what’s possible at sea. Unlike mass tourism, yachting can often have a positive impact on the destinations it touches – and by bringing the world’s most influential people into contact with some of its untold stories, we have an extraordinary opportunity to inspire awareness and change.

Graham I would like to see innovation in guest experiences, with greater integration of technology, wellness, and cultural immersion. Equally important is investment in crew development – training, career pathways, and welfare –ensuring the industry attracts and retains the best talent, which ultimately elevates the charter experience for all.

Verge Yacht Design

Creative Collaboration: Verge x F/Yachting

Great design is never just about utility, it’s about presence. For the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Verge Yacht Design and F/YACHTING present a bespoke exterior coffee table that reads as both sculpture and structure, the outcome of a dialogue between design and craft.

From Verge’s side, the table began with proportion and flow: a surface meant to anchor conversation and movement on deck, lines drawn to feel fluid yet precise. It was conceived as more than furniture – an architectural gesture that bridges interior refinement with exterior durability.

F/YACHTING carried this vision forward, shaping the design into reality with the precision of their in-house future lab. Knowledge and years of development and testing have enabled them to manufacture furniture with details that meet the highest quality standards and long-lasting performance properties.

Materials & innovation

• High-End Exterior Quality – European standards of furniture making adapted for open-air performance.

• Exterior Lacquer System – A proprietary F/YACHTING finish that protects wood species in both gloss and matte, ensuring continuity from salon to deck.

• Stone Crafting – Ultra-thin inlays and illuminated surfaces, architectural accents that lend both strength and luminosity.

• Stainless Steel Mechanisms – Functional details engineered with the same clarity as the structure itself.

• Leather Upholstery – Marine-grade treatments that bring tactile softness to hard surfaces.

• Embossing Technology – F/YACHTING’s Fresco decor, a subtle relief that turns the leather surface into detail, texture into character.

The

process

The coffee table is the product of conversation between designer and builder, sketch and fabrication, a concept and material. Verge provided the design DNA; F/YACHTING translated it into form with structural clarity and enduring precision.

Why it matters

The result is not simply a coffee table, but a demonstration of how collaboration transforms. It is both object and idea: design with purpose, build with clarity, create with vision. Debuting at the Northrop & Johnson Estate during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the piece stands as proof of what becomes possible when design and manufacturing converge. vergeyachtdesign.com

In the world of yachting, where financial management is as complex as navigation itself, Starboard Card is charting a new course. Designed specifically for owners, crew, and charter guests, the platform offers seamless, secure, and globally accepted payments both at sea and shore.

For founder and CEO Dan Lane, the official launch of Starboard Card is not the finish line but the beginning. “It’s a massive relief to finally get the product out there,” he admits. “But launch isn’t the destination; it’s the start line. This is just the beginning.” The idea was born out of a simple but frustrating problem: a lost card. From there, it quickly evolved into something much bigger. “Everyone we spoke to in the industry had their own set of challenges,” Lane explains. “So, we built a flexible payments platform with card payments, banking infrastructure, APA management, and more. For every user, it solves a different problem.”

At its heart, Starboard Card is about control and visibility. Owners and captains can set spend limits, monitor transactions in real time and manage charter guests’ funds with ease. It’s all powered by a full Visa Infinite debit card, ensuring global acceptance – from Monaco to the most remote locations. Security and reliability were key considerations. “Our customers demand the highest levels of security,” says Lane. “But many so-called industry standards don’t actually fit yachting. Take SMS one-time codes – they don’t work when you’re offshore. We’ve developed new methods that are both more secure and better suited to the realities of yachting.”

That commitment to building something fit for purpose is reflected in the infrastructure. Unlike many fintech start-ups, Starboard Card didn’t rely on off-the-shelf systems. Instead, the team built its own banking backbone and secured a Visa Infinite BIN, giving them far more flexibility with spend limits and compliance. Customer service has been shaped with the same ethos. The team is drawn from both high-end private banking and the yachting industry. “When you call us, you’re speaking to someone who knows what it’s like to run a busy yacht,” Lane says.

As for what comes next, Lane insists evolution will be guided by the users themselves. “One of our big advantages is having both software and product teams in-house, so we can iterate quickly,” he explains. “Honestly, I don’t know exactly how Starboard Card will evolve – and that’s the point. It will be shaped by feedback.” Looking back, Lane is candid about what has been most rewarding. “It’s been amazing to meet so many talented people and hear how positively the product is being received,” he reflects. “I’m not from this world – I was just a keen sailor before – so to have Starboard Card embraced by the industry is something I’m really proud of.”

With security, global flexibility, and yachting-specific design at its core, Starboard Card looks set to become a trusted essential for life at sea.

The Macallan Horizon

A Fusion of Craft and Innovation

The Macallan and Bentley Motors have unveiled The Macallan Horizon, a collaboration that unites the worlds of fine whisky and luxury automotive design. This limited-edition single malt is a testament to innovation, craftsmanship, and a shared pursuit of excellence.

At its heart is a bold vessel like any other. Designed with a unique 180-degree twist, it reflects the horizontal lines of the automotive world while challenging traditional whisky presentation. The glass is wrapped in a precision-engineered aluminum ribbon, encased in low-carbon leather in a rich chestnut hue, and framed with recycled copper sourced from The Macallan’s historic stills. Each element pays tribute to The Macallan’s Six Pillars and Bentley’s sculptural design language.

Inside rests an exclusive single malt crafted by The Macallan Master Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell. Drawn from six firstfill sherry seasoned oak casks, the whisky delivers rich notes of dried fruits, spice, leather, and oak – flavors that echo both The Macallan’s heritage and Bentley’s refined interiors. The finish is long, complex, and enduring, a mirror of Bentley’s timeless design ethos. Bottled at 46.6 percent ABV, the expression nods to the six casks, six materials, and six pillars that define its creation.

For both brands, the limited edition 70cl The Macallan Horizon is more than a product, it’s a vision realized after years of collaboration. More than a whisky, it stands as an emblem of heritage meeting innovation, where the spirit of Scotland meets the artistry of Crewe.

H. Moser & Cie

Pioneer Flying Hours

Independent maker H. Moser & Cie is perhaps best-known for its execution of alluring watch dials. The starry, night-sky aventurine used for the dial on this watch certainly falls right into that tradition. However, it is the rarely seen flying hours complication that steals the holiday showcase. Each of the three rectangular red gold-framed apertures masks a hidden wheel that instantaneously pops up the hour as the darkened central minutes wheel makes its daily rotation around the stunning aventurine dial. h-moser.com

ON TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

A fine timepiece is always a welcome gift, but for the holidays think festive. With bold colors, unique materials, and inventive design, these four watches bring the seasonal wow every collector craves.

MB&F

M.A.D.1S “Grow Your Dreams”

The unique timepieces created by inventive brand MB&F (which stands for Maximilian Büsser and Friends) are often created in collaboration with artists, and can always be described as unapologetically festive. These special M.A.D. limited editions also sell fast. Working with NigerianBritish artist Yinka Ilori, this redpurple-green combination aligns strongly with holidays, and, to be frank, with the very idea of holiday joy. With only 400 editions made, this M.A.D. edition is already sold out at press time. Look to the aftermarket and auctions for the watch. mbandf.com

While bronze is an ancient material, it not only played a profound role in the history of Italian design, but the material will delightfully and uniquely develop its own attractive patina over time. For the first time, the staunchly Roman design house Bulgari employs bronze for its Swiss-made watches. The new Bronzo models are available in both a 40mm GMT form (offering a second time zone) and 41mm chronograph (offering stopwatch-like event timing). Regardless of the model you choose, this watch’s distinctive sand-blasted metallic/black rubber construction never looked better. bulgari.com

Ulysse Nardin

Freak [X Crystalium]

The Swiss watchmaker leans into some cutting-edge science for this shimmering update to its artful, outof-the-box Freak X timepiece. The scintillating effect on the stunning dial is created in the lab, by applying vapor-deposition techniques on the rare metal ruthenium (which is a molecularly related to platinum, but ten time harder to find). The small, unique-for-each-dial fractal crystals that develop then receive a warm rose gold PVD finish and hand-applied black shading really ring out the holiday bling. ulysee-nardin.com

Aston Martin 60th Anniversary DB12 Volante

While the British brand is looking to incorporate electrification as soon as next year, it is one of those stalwart automakers that still produces only traditionally-fueled performance cars. This 60th Anniversary flagship DB12 2+2 seater drop-top sports a twin-turbo V8 that delivers a 202mph top speed and a neck-snapping acceleration from 0 to 62mph of 3.7 seconds; the same kind of punching performance that was offered when the signature DB line debuted back in 1950. This exciting power is, as expected, well-met with luxurious Bond-worthy interior options like a world-class Bowers & Wilkins sound system, commemorative badged leatherwork, and four vintage-inspired interior color ways, from Titanium Grey to Magneto Bronze. astonmartin.com

Lexus IS 500 F SPORT Performance

The flag-bearer of Japanese luxury and performance is well ahead of the game on electrification behind Toyota’s gamechanging U.S. Prius debut back in 2000. However, while hybrid, plug-in, and full-battery power dominate the Lexus stable, there are still traditional combustion-engine luxury performance vehicles to be found as the brand shoots for full battery power across the board in 2035. This Lexus IS 500 F SPORT

Performance sedan, for example, features a blistering 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 that delivers 472 horses and carries particularly sporty-looking stacked quad exhausts. In fact, those who have driven this car compare it quite favorably to fueled models from a certain German carmaker that starts with a “P”. lexus.com

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II

While an electric version of its sporty Spectre coupe debuted in 2023, the austerely proper English carmaker is planning to become fully electric by 2030. That means the clock is loudly ticking to acquire a traditional full-fuel Rolls, like the significantly upgraded Ghost Series II. The elegantly chauffeurable “gentlemen’s saloon” still delivers abundant interior luxury, comfort, and custom craftsmanship, along with celebrity-grade arrival moments via its immaculate exterior fit and finish. And, by getting your hands on one now, you will be assured of the marque’s signature, riding-on-a-cloud civilized performance (with plenty of oomph when needed) with a time-tested, technically-advanced 563hp twin-turbo V12 engine. rolls-roycemotorcars.com

BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe

While the forward-looking engineering focus of the German automaker made for one of the earliest forays into full-electrification for luxury performance cars with the 2013 debut of the innovative i8, the brand is still, at least for the time-being, committed to both electric and combustion models for its special performance line of M series creations. This BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe will redefine your concept of executive-grade daily commuting with its 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 power plant that builds up a no-worry 617 horses with a track-ready cooling system for more intense driving. Go even more old-school-performance with optional 8-speed manual M gearshift paddles for the transmission. bmwusa.com

They

When it comes to private jets, buying time doesn’t come cheap. The average hourly guaranteed charter jet price in the United States at the end of the second quarter was $11,274 per hour. Light jets were $8,344 per hour while ultra-long-haul aircraft cost over $19,000. While those prices include repositioning and applicable taxes, one hour in a private jet is still on the same cost level as staying in a fancy suite in a major city.

When asked why they chose to fly privately over airlines, 68 percent of flyers cite door-to-door savings compared to airlines, followed by 60 percent who say avoiding crowded commercial airline terminals. Some 50 percent say private aviation gives them more time by enabling them to use more convenient airports.

One surprise benefit, respondents who are new to private aviation say, is finding that there are often airports accessible to private aviation that are closer to where they are leaving from or going to. Two great examples are Witham Field, located in Stuart, Florida, 40 miles north of the Palm Beach International Airport, and Naples Municipal Airport on the state’s west coast, in the heart of the upscale metropolis and 35 miles closer than the nearest airport with scheduled airlines in Fort Myers.

Turning a connection into a nonstop flight is another reason to fly privately, with nearly 50 percent of private flyers citing a nonstop private flight over a connection as the reason to fly privately – again saving time. For example, to fly from Fort Myers to Los Angeles, there are no nonstop flights. With a connection of 90 minutes, you are looking at seven-and-a-half hours gate to gate. A private jet from Naples nonstop is around five hours on the same basis. If you factor in more convenient airports, arriving 20 minutes or so before departure, and then not having to change planes or wait for baggage on the other end, you can cut a long 12-hour travel day to just six hours.

Interestingly, more than one-third of private flyers use private aviation to replace long drives in the car. For example, a 10-

hour drive from Southern Wisconsin to Michigan is a 30-mile flight across the lake. Similarly, you can fly from the west coast of Florida to Key West in under an hour, something that would entail a full day on the highway. Flying to the Hamptons and Cape Cod can yield similar extra hours in your day.

When Kenn Ricci, chairman of Flexjet, Inc., was recently asked if accelerated bonus distribution from the Big Beautiful Bill passed by the U.S. Congress would spur more sales, he said, “I don’t think it drives the sales. I think the sale gets driven because this is the seventh day in a row you’ve been delayed by American Airlines, and you’re worth $40 million, and your life is a stressful mess because of those airlines. It’s not bonus depreciation.”

Some 47 percent of those surveyed say the current airline experience is driving them to fly privately more often.

For flyers, flying privately often results in an extra half day at the beginning or end of a trip. For example, they arrive in time for a round of golf before dinner or have the morning open for some final runs down the slope before a leisurely lunch, and then getting home in time to get a good night’s sleep before hitting the office. Using private aviation for business can get you home in time for that important soccer game or high school play, moments that will never be repeated. As one respondent noted, “Flying commercial is cheap, but you get what you pay for.”

However, if time is money, they say, flying privately has what some quantify as return-on-life, and all the extra and enjoyable activities when you are not standing at baggage claim, wondering if your luggage will appear or if you’ll spend the next three days tracking it with automated response bots.

MAIDEN VOYAGE

HOW TO CHARTER

Your first charter? It can be smooth sailing if you know what to pack, who to bring, and what not to ask the captain.

There are few vacation experiences more transformative than stepping aboard a superyacht for the first time. It’s not just the teak decks, the welcoming smiles from the crew, or the luxurious accommodations, it’s the realization that, for the next week or two, the whole experience is tailored entirely to you.

While chartering a yacht is the epitome of bespoke vacationing, it pays to consider the finer details before you embark. From packing etiquette and guest chemistry to onboard conduct, we share a few simple considerations that can make all the difference to a harmonious charter.

Choosing your guests

A superyacht is many things – a floating resort, private sanctuary, party base – but at its core, it’s an intimate space. So the question isn’t just who do you like, but who do you vacation well with? A week aboard with friends who keep opposite schedules, have different ideas of fun, or expect constant entertainment can strain even the most relaxed of itineraries. Be transparent about your pace: early morning-swims or late-night discos? Fine wines and downtime, or jet skis and inflatables? Alignment is everything. Most experienced brokers will tell you that guest chemistry matters just as much as the yacht itself. That isn’t to say that everyone onboard needs to share the same space – far from it. Today’s crews are masters at tailoring experiences across generations, seamlessly balancing the needs of children, teens, and grandparents within the same itinerary. The key is communication. Whether you are leaning toward high-adrenaline adventure, a social celebration, or a restorative wellness escape, it is important to share your group’s preferences with your broker from the outset. The right yacht and crew can be a match not only to your vision, but to the personalities and pace of your guests.

Pack light

Resist the urge to overpack. Charter life calls for effortless style – think breezy linens, lightweight layers, and versatile pieces you can dress up or down. Heels are rarely needed (and not allowed on deck). Your must-have essentials are swimsuits, a layer for cool evenings, polarized sunglasses, a hat, and a white outfit – there’s always a theme night. Yachts are typically stocked with high-end toiletries, robes, slippers, and more. But personal essentials – skincare, specialty items –should always make the cut.

Respect the crew

Your captain is more than a host, they’re the ultimate authority onboard. Their first responsibility is safety: yours, the crew’s, and the vessel’s. That means that some requests, however well-meaning, just aren’t feasible. Midnight jet ski runs are a no. Anchoring wherever the view looks pretty? Also a no. The best thing to do is to communicate clearly and early. Always dreamed of anchoring beneath the cliffs of Santorini for sunset? Or a surprise beach barbecue on a deserted island in the Grenadines? Share your wishes ahead of time and most captains will do their best to make it happen, within the bounds of safety and weather. It is also worth asking about the chef. The chef can make or break your trip. Well before your trip, you will be asked to complete a preference sheet. This is the time to note everything from wine preferences to food dislikes – the more specific, the better the result. A good chef will anticipate your requirements, they remember your child’s allergy, your love of a certain cuisine, your preference for a light breakfast or midnight snack. If the yacht offers elevated dining options such as wine pairings, beach dinners, or tasting menus, say yes. These are the moments that linger. And, don’t forget the tip. Crew tips are customary, typically between 10 – 20 percent of the charter fee, adjusted for the region and service level. Your broker can advise on specifics.

Embrace downtime

Remember, this is a holiday. One of the greatest luxuries of yacht life is the unforced pace. Wake when you please, paddleboard before breakfast. There’s no rush to be anywhere. First-timers often fall into the trap of overplanning, and trying to check off every port, every restaurant. Trust your captain. That said, although it pays to be flexible, the most effortless charters are the most carefully prepared. Your crew will advise daily on weather and cruising conditions, they will manage provisioning to adapt to your preferences and organize any lastminute transfers. Your only job is to say yes or no, and to relax.

So when it comes to create a wonderful inaugural charter, remember, invite the right people, ask the right questions, say thank you, and, when invited, jump off the swim platform.

CARIBBEAN CONTRASTS

Cruising Guide

One sea, two styles. Which side of paradise are you on?

WORDS MIRIAM CAIN

In the Caribbean, no two islands are quite alike, and that’s their appeal. Some offer barefoot luxury, others old-world charm, and some Champagne-fueled parties. When you charter a superyacht, you’re free to create the mood, whether that’s yoga at sunrise or dancing barefoot on the aft deck with a rum punch. Here, Northrop & Johnson’s charter experts break down four of the region’s most compelling island contrasts, each offering its own distinct rhythm, flavor and allure.

01 Anguilla's beaches are barefoot chic
02 The Bahamas are playful and sociable

Chic & Glamorous Versus Jungle Luxe

St. Barths or St. Lucia

A superyacht classic, St. Barths is the jewel of the French Caribbean. Effortlessly glamorous, the island is made for superyacht guests who appreciate a curated vibe and elevated energy. It’s this blend of chic sophistication and barefoot island living that has earned St. Barths a reputation as the Riviera of the Caribbean.

Chartering here means arriving in Gustavia Harbor and heading ashore to discover designer boutiques, before popping into Shellona or Nikki Beach for a rosé-fueled lunch. As the sun begins to set, it’s cocktails onboard, followed by dinner at Le Toiny or Bonito, and late-night people-watching at the Rémy Bar, Eden

If St. Barths is poised and chic, St. Lucia is raw and radiant. This Windward Island draws charterers to its untamed beauty, its twin volcanic peaks, rainforest slopes, tumbling waterfalls, and secluded coves. It’s an island for charterers seeking wellness with a wild edge. Start your day hiking the iconic Pitons or snorkeling in the protected waters off Anse Chastanet. Soak in the sulphur-rich springs, paddleboard beneath Petit Piton, or take a guided walk through the rainforest. Evenings are a quiet affair where guests can dine on the fresh catch-of-the-day onboard, or delight in local lobster and live music at a yachting crowd favorite, Sugar Beach

Classic Cruising Versus Barefoot Chic

Antigua or Anguilla

For those drawn to classic yachting culture, Antigua delivers. The island has long been a favorite among superyacht guests for its natural harbors, elegant beach clubs, and effortless mix of sailing heritage and luxury. With 365 beaches – one for every day of the year – and yacht-friendly coastline of coves and sheltered anchorages, the island offers endless possibilities for cruising.

Berth in Falmouth Harbour or Nelson’s Dockyard and head ashore to explore the island’s colonial past. The dockyard remains a visible symbol of England’s powerful navy with Colonial naval buildings remaining intact. Lunch might mean grilled mahi at Catherine’s Café, followed by a quiet afternoon in the gardens of The Inn at English Harbour. Evenings bring cocktails at The Hut Little Jumby, or dinner onboard as the sun sets behind Shirley Heights.

Anguilla, meanwhile, is pure, understated beauty. With its footprint low and its beaches wide, it’s one of the Caribbean Leeward island’s most tranquil stops – no crowds, just white sands, turquoise waters, and a barefoot chic vibe.

Anchor off Meads Bay or Little Bay and tender ashore to find beachfront grills serving just-caught lobster, or settle in for poolside cocktails at Belmond Cap Juluca. Paddleboard at sunrise, read for hours, and let the day drift by with a local rum and nothing on the agenda.

10 Antigua's English Harbour is a favorite haven for the waterborne
11 Belmond Cap Juluca stands out as one of Anguilla's premier resorts
12 Soak up the beach club vibes a The Hut, Little Jumby
13 The Hut, Little Jumby is a recent addition to Antigua's scene

Old-world Charm Versus Laid-back Vibes

Nevis or Virgin Gorda

Nevis is the Caribbean at its most quietly refined – a historic island with substance. Drop anchor off Pinney’s Beach and tender ashore for an afternoon at the legendary Sunshine’s Beach Bar & Grill, or head inland to explore the island’s Colonial-era plantations, botanical gardens, and volcanic hot springs. History is layered into every experience here, from the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton to 18th-century sugar mills turned into elegant dining rooms. Take high tea at Montpelier Plantation & Beach, or simply enjoy the slow beauty of it all from the deck – lush hills rising behind you, golden beaches ahead, and a sense that time has stopped, just a little.

While Nevis leans into heritage, Virgin Gorda leans into effortless luxury with a barefoot edge. Part of the British Virgin Islands, it’s best known for The Baths – a stunning natural wonder of granite boulders, tide pools, and hidden caves that feels like nature’s own spa. Superyachts can drop anchor in the North Sound and tender ashore to Oil Nut Bay or the iconic Bitter End Yacht Club for a long lunch, a beachside cocktail, or a massage with a view.

Days here move to island time – snorkeling over vibrant reefs, paddleboarding in sheltered bays, and dining barefoot under the stars. It’s laid back with a blend of easy charm and polished service.

14 Pinney's Beach is as busy as the quiet island of Nevis gets 15 Oil Nut Bay on Virgin Gorda caters for the superyacht crowd
16 Nevis' Montpelier Plantation exudes timeless old-school glamor
Experience nature at its finest on Virgin Gorda

Castaway Calm Versus Breezy & Playful

Grenadines or Bahamas

A charter through the Grenadines is a lesson in slowing down. This scattering of islands stretching between St. Vincent and Grenada offers a sense of seclusion that’s increasingly rare in the Caribbean. Think anchorages with no one else in sight, mornings that begin with sunrise yoga on deck, and days spent gliding between coral reefs and desert island idylls.

Mustique brings understated glamour and quiet celebrity appeal, and invites a beach picnic or a long lunch at The Cotton House Bequia has a sleepy charm, while the Tobago Cays deliver some of the best snorkeling in the region. The Grenadines are ideal for guests who want privacy, nature, and barefoot luxury.

By contrast, The Bahamas are made for easy days, shallow cruising, and waterborne fun. With hundreds of cays to explore, island-hopping here is effortless and scenic – from the buzzy beach clubs of Harbour Island to the crystal-clear waters and Instagram-famous pigs of the Exumas.

There’s a sociability to chartering in The Bahamas. Days revolve around snorkel stops and sandbar lunches, while evenings bring sundowners on deck or dockside cocktails at places like Staniel Cay Yacht Club. It’s all about luxury with a splash of fun.

WHAT'S YOUR CHARTER PERSONALITY?

From barefoot relaxation to all-out party-vibe, what kind of charter holiday are you looking for? Let us curate your perfect yacht charter experience.

WORDS MIRIAM CAIN

When it comes to superyacht charters, one size never fits all. Some guests want sunrise yoga and silent anchorages; others are in it for the Champagne-fueled nights and island-hopping playlists. And then there are the families chasing sun-kissed memories, and couples plotting the ultimate romantic escape. Fortunately, yachts are floating worlds unto themselves, so your yacht charter can be anything you want it to be. Outfitted with saunas, Technogym fitness suites, cinema lounges, wine cellars, dive centers, and even submersibles, a yacht is the perfect platform for a wellness retreat, a family playground, a gourmet voyage, or an epic adventure. The only real question is: what’s your charter personality?

The Wellness Devotee

You travel to reset – body, mind, and spirit. Mornings begin with sun salutations on the foredeck, followed by fresh-pressed juices, a sauna, and a deep-tissue massage with the sound of the water lapping the hull. A gym or workout space is essential, as is a crew that understands wellness. The real indulgence here isn’t excess; a yacht for you is a space to reset. Although you don’t need a specific destination to make it work, cruising grounds such as the Exumas in The Bahamas and the Maldives lend themselves to a wellness charter with their calm waters and quiet anchorages.

There aren’t many gyms that can compete with the inspiring views from that onboard the 203' (62m) RoMa. Located on the sundeck, the air-conditioned gym looks directly out over the ocean. Stocked with the very best equipment, it's perfect for high-energy sessions or calming yoga led by the onboard yoga instructor. The Scene Seeker

You want buzzy beach clubs, high-low dining, and the kind of yacht that turns heads in every harbor. You’re just as comfortable at Le Ti St Barth as you are hosting a cocktail party on deck – complete with a DJ and a floating dancefloor. The destination, the guest list, the yacht – they are equally curated. This is the opposite of remote; you want to see, be seen, and drop anchor where the action is, whether this means long lunches at Nikki Beach or moonlit arrivals in Ibiza’s Marina Botafoch. You’re not following the crowd, you’re setting the tone. The destination: St. Barth, Ibiza, Amalfi Coast, Mykonos, or the Côte d’Azur.

Designed for outdoor living, the decadent decks aboard ALFA NERO host a choice of entertaining areas. The main deck aft is the perfect spot to start the party with a glass of Champagne by the sub-lit pool before the bottom rises and it turns into a dancefloor, while the DJ spins tracks on the advanced sound system, creating an electric atmosphere.

Similarly, BOADICEA is built for high-energy occasions, featuring DJ and karaoke equipment, a smoke machine, and powerful JBL “coffin” speakers on deck, delivering huge volume and immersive sound for an unforgettable party under the stars.

The Epicurean

For some, the charter is defined not by the ports of call but by what arrives on the plate. Tailor-made gourmet cuisine is at the heart of the itinerary, with each meal a curated experience blending destination, season, and artistry. On these charters, the chef is every bit as central as the captain, and is expected to deliver not just meals, but memories. From locally-sourced produce to bespoke tasting menus with sommelier-level wine pairings, dining is an intrinsic part of the vacation.

Yachts with culinary pedigree stand out in this space. Chef Ben Ehrke brings global fine dining experience to the galley aboard LADY KATHRYN V, blending classical French training with a passion for wild African flavors and expertise earned across the world's top kitchens. Meanwhile, KING BABY's chef, Graham Stephenson, brings 15 years of restaurant experience and a passion for farm-to-table and sea-to-table cuisine, sourcing the freshest ingredients wherever the yacht drops anchor. For food-focused charterers, these chefs transform the yacht into a roaming restaurant without parallel.

KING BABY The 144' (43.89m) KING BABY is available to charter in The Bahamas and Caribbean this winter season for prices from $195,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 10 guests.

The Active Adventurer

The yacht is your basecamp, providing the ultimate platform for adventure. You don’t want to lounge around, you want to explore. Whether it’s diving, hiking, heli-skiing or fishing, you want a yacht that can keep up with you and has the toys to match your pace. You want a crew that doubles as your guide, with expertise in just about every activity on offer. Your preference is for remote anchorages, perhaps diving in Raja Ampat, cruising beneath calving glaciers in Antarctica, or deep-sea fishing in The Bahamas. Wherever you choose, your itinerary will be awe-inspiring.

The motor yacht STARFIRE is built for those who want to see – and be immersed in – the world around them. Her upper observation lounge offers cinematic views across the horizon and is perfect for spotting whales breaching, dolphins riding the bow wave, or glaciers calving in the distance. Even retiring to bed doesn’t mean missing out: the main deck master suite comes with its own private observation lounge, so the drama of the seascape remains a constant backdrop.

For those looking to explore further afield this holiday season, EL REY is available to charter in Mexico and Central America, as well as The Bahamas and Caribbean. Optimally designed and set up to accommodate fishing adventures, she offers the perfect blend of adventure, exploration, and luxury on the water.

The Family Charterer

Your yacht is your floating home, with facilities and accommodations to suit all generations. Your idea of family time extends from children to teens to grandparents. Days need to be flexible and fun, with watersports, shaded lounges, and movie nights under the stars. Yachts with flexible layouts can make a difference when considering family charters.

REVELRY, for example, offers the principal charterer a master stateroom on the main deck with a twin cabin located behind, which is ideally suited for small children. The lower deck is home to the yacht’s remaining four staterooms, comprising two twins and two doubles, making her layout ideal for multigenerational family charters.

It isn’t just the layout of the accommodation that makes certain yachts more appealing for family charters. The SKYFALL offers 3,707 square feet of outdoor living space divided into sections to cater for different occasions, ensuring that everyone is happy. Adults and teenagers alike can challenge their friends to a game of basketball on the sundeck or enjoy a dip in the splash pool, while the garage is packed full of toys to keep the whole family entertained. She also boasts superb accommodations, with a split-level master and equally impressive VIP stateroom, while additional staterooms include an accessible queen bedroom, added to which a wheelchair-accessible elevator allows easy access all three decks.

MALIA is also a standout yacht for multi-generational charters, offering thoughtful amenities for all ages. An elevator connects the lower accommodations deck to the bridge deck, ensuring seamless access throughout. While grandparents unwind in the sea-level spa and beach club, younger guests might head out with the yacht’s two expert sportfishing pros. Of course, the real unifier is the water, and this is where MALIA excels. Like all the best charter yachts, she carries an enviable arsenal of toys, from the SHARK submersible Seabreacher to a full suite of adrenaline-fueled equipment that keeps every generation entertained.

MALIA

With all the action a charter delivers, downtime is just as important. For some guests that means a few quiet hours with a book on the aft deck; for others, it’s retreating to the cool of the theater to escape the midday sun. Unsurprisingly, cinema spaces have become one of the most in-demand amenities for family charters. Today’s yachts cater to every preference – from dedicated theaters with tiered seating and reclining armchairs to flexible salon setups or pop-up screens on deck.

On larger yachts, purpose-built cinemas deliver a truly immersive experience. BOADICEA, for example, has a brand-new 12-seat theater with state-of-the-art audiovisual systems. She also features a main deck VVIP suite, designed as a second master, which makes her especially appealing for dual principals or multi-generational family groups.

Open-air cinema setups, meanwhile, bring their own allure. Few things compare to watching a film beneath the stars, with the sea as your soundtrack. Many yachts turn their sundecks into outdoor theaters after dark, transforming the spaces into private, starlit cinemas.

BOADICEA

The 249'5" (76.6m) BOADICEA is available to charter in the The Bahamas and Caribbean this winter season for prices from €725,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 18 guests.

A TASTE OF “THE PINK PALACE”

Step ashore to Bermuda’s Hamilton Princess & Beach Club for vibrant dining and iconic harbor views

WORDS MIRIAM CAIN

A fixture on the Hamilton waterfront since 1885, Hamilton Princess & Beach Club has become Bermuda’s modern hub for yachting, dining, and design. Its 60-berth luxury marina brings superyachts into the heart of Hamilton, steps from the resort that blends historic character with contemporary amenities.

The dining game here is strong. Intrepid Steak, Seafood & Raw Bar Bermuda – a James Bondinspired steakhouse – is among the island’s best. Here, prime cuts and fine wines are paired with cinematic flair, making it a destination as stylish as it is indulgent. Steps away, 16O9 sets the tone for something livelier. An open-air cantina serving vibrant Latin-inspired fare, it’s the go-to for sundowners and sharing plates, where colorful cocktails meet spectacular sunsets over Hamilton Harbour. For something more casual, Crown & Anchor is the all-day heart of the hotel. A relaxed bar and brasserie, it’s as suited to a leisurely breakfast as it is to a late-night sports screening – accompanied by the hotel’s warm service.

Add in an infinity pool with private cabanas, a private beach club at Sinky Bay, and an impressive pop art collection featuring Warhol, Hirst, and many others, and the Princess more than earns its reputation as the place to dock and dine while cruising Bermuda.

Q&A Fiona Maureso

Fiona Maureso has spent her career shaping the charter market. Here, she shares her unique perspective on its past, present, and future.

What first drew you into the world of yacht charter?

As for many of my generation, becoming a yacht charter broker was not an option proposed by our career advisors; I stumbled into it more by accident than design. I started as a PA to an inspirational yacht broker who sold a yacht I had (briefly) worked on. He generously shared his knowledge and expertise, and I quickly learned a lot about all aspects of the industry. After a couple of years, I was offered the role of charter broker in the same company.

Can you share a memorable experience as a charter broker that shaped the way you work with clients now?

One of the first big charters I booked was for an American client who invited me to join his party onboard as “cruise director.” This gave me my first taste of the luxury charter experience from the client’s perspective and a better understanding of (and respect for) the crew’s role in creating a successful charter.

Over the years, how have you seen the role of a charter broker evolve?

When I started out, the charter process was much simpler. With the industry now highly regulated and more complex, charter brokers today need a thorough grasp of all aspects: contractual, fiscal and technical.

What do you think sets a truly great charter broker apart from the rest?

A charter broker is a matchmaker – finding the perfect yacht for each client. A good broker will build a rapport with the client, understanding their lifestyle, listening to and managing their expectations and guiding them to the right yacht. A great broker gains trust and loyalty, leading to successful charters year after year.

What are the biggest misconceptions clients have about yacht charters?

Many clients think they need the newest, most beautiful yacht without considering other factors. With experience, they realize that there is more to it than simple aesthetics. The caliber of the crew, the culture on board, the condition of the yacht, and its safety and comfort – these are all important factors that tend to get overlooked initially.

How has the charter market changed in the last five years?

The most obvious change is the size of the fleet. There are now an estimated 4,000 crewed yachts over 78’ (24m) available for charter globally, and the over-164’ (50m) market segment is significantly bigger. As for clientèle, we are seeing a younger demographic with different demands in terms of experience and destination and we, as charter brokers, are using different tools to engage with them.

Are there any emerging destinations or experiences you think will define the next era of charter?

There is more interest in “off the beaten path” destinations such as Antarctica, Indonesia, the South Pacific, and Central America, with growing demand for experiences like diving, whale watching, and generally engaging with the natural world. At the same time, charter clients are now more demanding in terms of onboard amenities. Owners are embracing these new trends; more yachts are now available in far-flung areas, equipped with chase boats, toys, gyms, and even, in the case of larger yachts, state-of-theart wellness centers.

What continues to inspire you about working in this industry?

I get to work with the most amazing clients delivering prestigious experiences, and I’m thrilled to be in an industry that’s constantly evolving. It keeps me curious, engaged and never bored.
