TABLE OF CONTENTS 2017 is going to be an exceptional year for North Kansas City Parks and Recreation. With construction for the new Recreation Center beginning after the first of the year and barring any construction delays, the building should be completed by late fall. The new facility will have a multipurpose room with a catering kitchen, meeting/classroom, game room, and staff offices. This will allow for more programs, special events and senior programs. The facility will be built in Macken Park on the south side of Clark Ferguson across from the Festival Shelter and east of soccer field #2. Architectural renderings are featured below. We will post progress images on Facebook as construction moves along. Keep an eye out for all that is going on with North Kansas City Parks and Recreation.

ENGINEERING FOR KIDS CAMPS
During our camps, students are exposed to a variety of engineering disciplines including Aerospace, Mechanical, Civil and Robotics Engineering.
AEROSPACE ENGINEERING 2ND-6TH GRADES
During our Aerospace Engineering classes, students use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and refine a variety of flying machines. They construct a shock-absorbing system designed to protect marshmallow astronauts in a lunar vehicle, create their own air-powered rockets, and assemble a blimp that actually takes flight! DAY OFF SCHOOL CAMP 1ST-6TH GRADES
Students will use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, and test skyscrapers and catapults while learning about forces and simple machines. They also have the opportunity to participate in a sumo robot battle with their engineering design team and learn about the freezing point of water and how to chemically alter it to make slushies. Students will need to bring their lunch and spend the day learning about engineering through handson activities. They will learn about the engineering design process and use it to design, build and test a rocket, a balloon powered car and a bridge. SPORTS leagues YOUTH LEAGUES North Kansas City Parks & Recreation youth sports programs are non-competitive leagues. The programs emphasize skill development; learning the rules of the game, playing as a team, sportsmanship, and most importantly to have FUN! All practices and games are held at Macken Park. Children may register with one “buddy” for youth team sports. BOTH registration forms must be received along with the registration fee for each child at the same time. If you are new to the NKC sports program, you will be placed on a team by the NKC Parks & Recreation staff.

This program is a five-week introductory session to the sport of soccer. Participants will begin to understand the fundamental motor skills of soccer through games and activities. The last week will be designated as a scrimmage game. T-ball is the first step in the baseball/ softball progression. Emphasis is placed on having fun and playing together as a team. Our goal is for the child to learn the correct skills for batting, throwing and catching, as well as developing an understanding of the basics of the game. Coach-Pitch will take over where T-ball left off. The child will learn to hit a ball pitched to them by their coach. The child will further develop fielding skills and learn to play as a team. Kid pitch baseball is the next step in getting ready for playing competitive baseball. Players will learn the fundamentals of pitching and catching as well as further basic fundamental baseball skills. The rules and diamond are modified to fit age group. YOUTH SPORTS NUTRITION FOR PARENTS/COACHES/ ADULTS
Does your child get cranky mid-way through a game? Does your child need water or a sports drink? What do they need after the game? In this Youth Sports Nutrition class, we will answer these questions and many more. We will also explore when to be concerned and creating a balance in their diet. This class is geared towards parents but there will be activities for the kids to do during the session! Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run is a FREE event that tests three of the most fundamental aspects of baseball/ softball—pitching, hitting and running.
HIT: Participant hits a ball off a stationary tee for distance and accuracy. RUN: Participant is timed, starting from second base, touching third then touching home plate. All of the events are individually scored and converted to a total point score through the use of conversion tables. Participants will compete in each of the three components of Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run and accumulate a total score based on his/her performance. Hours of Operation: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily, Memorial Day to Last Sunday in September (weather permitting) Park Rules 1. In the event of an emergency, call 911 or use the Emergency Call Box located on the exterior wall of the family changing room. 2. There is no attendant on duty; use at your own risk. 3. Vacate the premises immediately when there are any signs of thunder, lightning, or severe weather. 4. Bathing suits or swim trunks are required for all spray ground users. 5. Children who are not toilet trained are required to wear a swim diaper or rubber pants without a diaper. 6. Parental or guardian (18 years or older) supervision is required for all children ages 13 years and younger. 7. Any person with open sores, cuts or obvious skin or body infections is not permitted on or in the spray ground. 8. Be considerate of others. All participants of the spray ground must conduct themselves in a courteous, safe, and familyoriented manner.

A partnership between the City of North Kansas City, Missouri and City of Kansas City, Missouri
Waggin’ Trail Off-Leash Dog Park is 4.70 acres, with designated areas for small dogs (less than 30 lbs.) and large dogs (more than 30 lbs.). Park Rules 1. All Park patrons must comply with the park rules as stated. Persons failing to comply with the rules may be subject to a formal complaint filed with the North Kansas City Police Department. Persons asked to leave the park premises who do not comply may be subject to prosecution for trespassing. 2. Off-leash dog areas are for dogs and their handlers. No animals other than dogs shall be permitted in the areas. No other use is permitted, including skateboard, bicycles, scooters, strollers and rollerblades. 3. Handlers must “scoop the poop” and dispose of waste in designated Park provided container. (Ordinance 6.12.120) 4. To create a positive experience for you and your dog, make sure your dog knows how to appropriately socialize with other dogs before using the Park. 5. Dog owners assume all risk related to the use of the Dog Park. The Cities of North Kansas City or Kansas City shall not be liable for any injury or damage caused by dogs or handlers. Handlers are responsible for any injuries caused by dog(s) under their control. 6. Dogs that exhibit aggressive behavior are not allowed in the park. Dogs must be removed immediately from park at the first sign of aggression. (Ordinance 6.12.090) 7. Dogs in the Small Dog area are to be less than 30 pounds. No dogs under the age of 4 months are allowed. All dogs exceeding 30 pounds are required to use the Large Dog area.

Female dogs in heat and dogs with fresh wounds are not allowed in the Dog Park. (Ordinance 6.12.100) All dogs must be current on their vaccinations along with displaying current tag on a collar or harness. (Ordinance 6.12.020) SPIKED COLLARS ARE NOT ALLOWED. All animal to human bites must be reported to the City of North Kansas City Animal Control Department immediately. (Ordinance 6.16.020) Dogs must be on leash, a maximum length of 6 feet, when entering and exiting the off-leash dog areas. Handlers must have possession of the dog leash at all times. No dogs are allowed within the off-leash area while restrained by a leash. Children 5 and under are not allowed in the off-leash dog areas. Children 6 – 15 must be accompanied by an adult and handlers must be a minimum of 16 years of age. Dogs must be under voice control of their handler and in view of their handler at all times. Only 2 dogs are allowed per handler. Handlers must repair all holes and damage done by their dog under their supervision. Park Hours of Operation are 6AM to Sunset or 9PM whichever comes first.

PARKS MEMORIAL PARK
Located at 716 East 23rd Avenue adjacent to the North Kansas City High School. The park is defined by a street meridian and contains several features commemorating the history of wars fought involving American citizens. A replica of the Statue of Liberty is located in Memorial Park.
MACKEN PARK
Located at the corners of Clark Ferguson Drive and Howell Street is home to many varied park activities. This 60-acre park is utilized for sports leagues, walking, picnicking and several forms of recreation.
