We open with our one-week-only Fred Alley Tribute Concert in the Gould Theater. Five artists that knew and loved Fred are putting this special concert together. Northern Sky founder Fred Alley’s work continues to bring joy to audiences across the country and around the world, and we’re proud to celebrate him.
In the park, our world premiere of The Thing with Feathers will take flight. A vibrant story of birds and birders will come alive with dynamic puppetry that truly soars. We’ve also got two fan favorites back in action—last year’s smash hit, Something in the Water, and our antic-driven melodrama, When Butter Churns to Gold, last produced in 2016. These shows promise a reprieve from all that ails you.
When the joy-making in the park winds down, we will ramp back up in the Gould with a second world premiere, a gem of a show created in partnership with our friends at Milwaukee Rep—George & Gracie: A Love Story by Tami Workentin. This sparkling tribute to comedy legends George Burns and Gracie Allen is a reminder of how joy evolves—and how performers, like Northern Sky itself, keep reinventing to meet the moment. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD
When I was a little kid, sitting on the bench in this theater in this park, I believed that Northern Sky shows were pure magic. I still believe that to be true, but now I can see how the unique combination of actors, musicians, sets, props, lighting, sound, and costumes makes the magic.
This year I would like to give a tip of my Northern Sky cap to the costume designers.
I have always loved costumes. When I was in college, I was invited to be the costume designer for the theater department. I suspect I was hired because I was the only one in the theater arts class that knew their way around a sewing machine. In any case, I loved the experience of stepping ‘behind the curtain’ and helping make the magic through costumes. Every jacket cut, skirt length, shoe heel, and hat brim was a deliberate choice in creating a character.
Our costume designer this summer, Karen Brown Larimore, has taken her part of the magic-making to a whole ’nother level. In Something in the Water, each character is first introduced in their proper costumes. Before too long, however, each of the characters turns up in disguise. Cue the maid’s cap, the tweed deerstalker, the artiste’s beret, a top hat and a mourning veil. To add to the costuming magic, almost everyone ends up in a mustache at some point.
Speaking of mustaches, whether Snidley-esque or otherwise, facial hair figures prominently in When Butter Churns to Gold as well. Now, we can split hairs (pun intended) about whether mustaches are a costume or a prop, but honestly, in these shows they are practically their own character. Oh, the melodrama!
The costume magic in The Thing with Feathers is more subtle and artful. The bird puppets are amazing and magical, though not costumed in the traditional sense. But keep an eye on their puppeteer handlers, who cosplay as their bird alter-egos. Rare birds and binoculars indeed.
I just had a peek at Jason Orlenko’s costume magic for George & Gracie and let me just say we are in for a most magical vaudevillian treat. Gracie’s dress fashion spans three decades, including an amazing blue swing dress, that will help keep us tethered to the period, while George’s braces and sleeve garters will likely help bring on that fashion’s revival. You read it here first! And let me just drop a hint that you will also be treated to some actual slightof-hand magic. That’s so meta.
I’ll be looking for you in the audience, dressed in your Northern Sky fan costume. I will be in mine as well. While you are here, please give a tip of your cap to our costume designers!

Molly joined Northern Sky as an actor in 2007, directed her first new work in Pen Park in 2013, joined the staff as associate artistic director in 2014, and is now in her second year as artistic director. This season Molly is directing Something in the Water, co-directing and performing in When Butter Churns to Gold, providing choreography for The Thing with Feathers and George & Gracie, and coordinating readings and workshops for a dozen new shows in development. She is honored to work closely with so many extraordinary authors. Molly has worked on over 40 world premieres at Northern Sky. In the off season, she also works regularly with theaters in Milwaukee and Madison. This past winter she directed The Fisherman’s Daughters at Milwaukee Rep, with a cast and design team of Northern Sky artists! Next winter, you can find her in The Boys from Baraboo at Next Act Theater. Molly represents Northern Sky on the leadership team of World Premiere Wisconsin, a statewide collaboration that celebrates new plays and musicals holding its second festival in 2026! Wisconsin has a truly special theater ecosystem. Thank you, Northern Sky patrons, for always believing in new work. We make these shows for you.

Holly first stepped onto the Door County scene straight out of college in 2001, UW–Stevens Point arts management degree in hand, husband by her side, and a baby on the way. At the time, she couldn’t have known she was beginning not just a career but a life rooted in joy and shaped by the most generous souls one could hope to meet. These are the people who care so deeply for this place we call home (or are lucky enough to visit) and who help the magic take flight from our stage night after night. For that, and so much more, she offers her heartfelt thanks to all who have shared her orbit over the past 25 years, especially the donors and patrons who make this work possible.
She and her husband, Jason (yes, that Jason Feldman of Jason Feldman Landscapes), have three grown children—Georgia, Elliott, and Scout— who are off on their own adventures but continue to return to the roots they’ve planted in Northern Sky soil.
Holly has also been known to step into the spotlight, sharing the stage with artists she now calls dear friends, always chasing that spark of connection that feels a little like joy taking wing. Here’s to the next 25 years of joymaking at Northern Sky.

JEFF HERBST
Emeritus Artistic Director / Performer
Jeff Herbst has been involved with Northern Sky and its predecessor, The Heritage Ensemble, since 1985. He was the first artistic director for the company until taking an emeritus status in 2025. He has worked on over eighty original productions with Northern Sky, including Guys on Ice, Lumberjacks in Love, Belgians in Heaven, and The Bachelors. Jeff was instrumental in developing Northern Sky’s New Works Program and the Fred Alley New Musical Fund, a fund used exclusively to bring original works “from the page to the stage.” He instituted the NOVA Initiative (nurturing original voices and artists) as a means for encouraging new writers to become involved with Northern Sky’s mission. He was integrally involved with the design of the new Gould Theater and Northern Sky campus. Jeff has an MFA in acting from the Asolo Conservatory and has performed on and off Broadway, as well as at regional theatres throughout the United States. He and Fred Alley were honored in 2017 with the Distinguished Alumni Award from their alma mater, Mt. Horeb High School, for their work in creating original musical theater.

This is Dave’s nineteenth year with Northern Sky, and his third as Northern Sky’s company manager. He met his muse, Barb, when they attended the UW-Madison Theatre program together. Later, after graduating from the American Conservatory Theater Advanced Training Academy in San Francisco, Dave joined the A.C.T. acting company as an Equity actor, eventually assuming additional roles as a conservatory trainer and stage director. He was also production manager of A.C.T.’s new works Plays-in-Progress Program, where he helped produce over thirty premiere productions, many of which he either also designed or directed. He co-founded and served eight years as artistic director for Encore Theatre Company in San Francisco, a critically acclaimed experimental theater company. Dave and Barb have been blessed to call Door County home for over thirty years now and are spending as much time as possible these days with beautiful grandkids Iris (Zachary & Carah!), and Hendrik (Weston & Victoria!).

Artistic Advisor / Co-Founder / Performer
Doc (aka “Fred”) has created or co-created two dozen musicals including Belgians in Heaven, Hell’s Belgians, Packer Fans from Outer Space (all with Lee Becker & Jimmy Kaplan), Guys & Does (with Lee Becker & Paul Libman), When Pigs Fly! (with Lee Becker), and several shows with Second City founding director Paul Sills. A Kerrville New Folk Finalist, Doc released Birthplace of the Thunder with his band Zen of Thieves in January and will host its album release concert July 19 at the Gould Theater featuring many Northern Sky friends (https://zenofthieves.com). Doc says that his 5-year-old grand-daughter plays the Thieves’ song Welcome Pilgrim on Spotify every time she gets in the car, which makes the whole recording process worthwhile. An award-winning teacher and researcher, Doc is Professor Emeritus at the California School of Professional Psychology and co-teaches with Lee Becker at the Medical College of Wisconsin. In 2026 he will be inducted as a Fellow by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters and will welcome his first grandson.

Fred Alley collaborated on over 20 original shows at AFT. He wrote the book and lyrics for Lumberjacks in Love and Fishing for the Moon, and was a contributor to Bone Dance. Fred also wrote perennial favorites Guys on Ice and The Bachelors with composer James Kaplan. Fred’s work has been celebrated throughout the country and in particular at both Madison and Milwaukee Repertory Theatres. The Spitfire Grill, which he wrote with composer James Valcq, earned them the Richard Rodgers Award and has been produced over 1,000 times from Off-Broadway to Europe and East Asia. Fred was also an accomplished performer and created many memorable characters, including Moonlight in Lumberjacks in Love, Lloyd in Guys on Ice, and Leo in Belgians in Heaven. Fred’s ability to help us laugh at ourselves, through his characters, makes his shows entertaining and timeless.

Lisa is humbled and delighted to serve Northern Sky as resident designer and production manager. She finds great joy continuing the professional gumbo of new work, collaboration, design, administration, and storytelling up here in the north woods. Still leading an active freelance life, Lisa looks forward to occasional creative collaborations with other friends as well. A proud member of the Production Managers Forum, The Society of Prop Managers, and United Scenic Artists local 829/IATSE, Lisa keeps work interesting through curiosity and a passion for learning new things. Lisa’s book with co-author Sandra Strawn, The Properties Director’s Toolkit, is available through Focal Press and on Amazon. Lachrisa is grateful to continue her creative journey with Northern Sky as the NOVA program director. While she’s not onstage in the woods this season, she’s proudly working behind the scenes to support new voices and vibrant storytelling. Lachrisa was last seen on the Northern Sky stage in Reality Trip and Girls on Sand, which she also co-wrote. Her musical Sunflowered premiered in 2022. A Dramatists Guild Foundation National Fellow (2024), she is also the Goodman Theatre’s 2026 New Stages Residency Writer. This is Shawn’s 12th season coming out to play in the woods. Fun fact: in college, he spent two years at a summer stock that was a showboat on the Ohio River, where he acted in classic melodramas; boo the villain and toss popcorn! Away from the theater he paints little toy soldiers and plays games with them, enjoys board games with friends and gets lost on his bicycle and tries to find his way home again.

Jordan is excited to return to Northern Sky Theater for her fourth season as wardrobe supervisor. She has worked in wardrobe for five years in both professional and academic settings. A graduate of Lawrence University with degrees in theater and business, she has worked backstage at Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lawrence University, and Dixon Stage Left. Her design credits include Beauty and the Beast Jr. and Once Upon a Mattress, and last season she made her professional design debut with The Bachelors at Northern Sky. Jordan looks forward to another season of storytelling as the stars come out behind the stage.
CARSON HEUSSNER
Master Electrician
Carson Heussner is excited to be serving as master electrician with Northern Sky Theater. Originally from southern Wisconsin, Carson has built a strong foundation in theatrical lighting and stage technology through both professional work and hands-on experience across the region. He was recognized at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for his lighting design work while studying at Madison College, and also received a Jerry Award nomination for his lighting design of The Little Mermaid at Fort Atkinson High School. His recent credits include productions of Cabaret, Matilda, Rock of Ages, Little Shop of Horrors, and She Kills Monsters, working with companies including Children’s Theater of Madison, Madison College Performing Arts, and Capitol City Theater. Carson loves the collaborative spirit of live theater and especially enjoys the challenge of helping create atmosphere and storytelling through light. He is deeply grateful to the mentors, educators, and collaborators who have encouraged his growth and helped shape his artistic journey. Outside of theater, he’s passionate about outdoor recreation and spends as much time as possible hiking, camping, and exploring Wisconsin’s natural spaces. Working with Northern Sky in beautiful Peninsula State Park is a perfect blend of those two passions, and he’s grateful to spend the summer making theater under the stars.

John is a Minnesota-based technical theater consultant whose work spans the full spectrum of live production; community theater and educational spaces to professional equity playhouses, corporate trade shows, and stadium-scale events. A multi-disciplinary technician, he brings the same enthusiasm to a 300-fixture light plot across 32 universes of control as to a single-mic murder mystery. His work has earned national, regional, and local recognition across multiple technical disciplines. When not in a theater, John works in Emergency Medicine at an academic medical center. He thanks everyone who keeps live theater alive and weird.

Rachely Levy is excited to be working with Northern Sky Theater! She is passionate about using light to tell stories and generate public connection. Her work can be seen in theatres and architecture throughout the USA including with Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, The Merchandise Mart, Le Petit Theatre, About Face Theatre, Victory Gardens Theatre, Music of the Baroque, Lucky Plush Dance, and more. Rachel has received two Primetime Emmy Award Certificates for Best Lighting, two IES Awards, and two Jeff Nominations. Originally from Milwaukee, Bill has directed more than 100 productions for theater and opera companies throughout North America. He spent 10 years as the artistic director of Skylight Music Theatre and currently holds the title Professor Emeritus at the University of Iowa where he served as the director of opera. Bill’s Door County credits include productions with Third Avenue PlayWorks and Door Shakespeare as well as Northern Sky Theater, beginning with The Spitfire Grill in 2002. Last December he directed the Northern Sky Theater workshop of The Gift of the Magi written by Katie Dahl and James Valcq. He currently teaches and coaches graduate vocal students online and is also an adjudicator for PBS Arts Programming.

Bruce is delighted to return to the woods with Northern Sky. No stranger to Northern Sky Theater, he has braved the mosquitos in the pit for productions such as Strings Attached, When Butter Churns to Gold, No Bones About It, Doctor, Doctor, and Boxcar. He has also spent many summers with Peninsula Players, performing in shows including A Little Night Music, Nunsense, Always…Patsy Cline, The Bridges of Madison County, Ghost the Musical, Peter and the Starcatcher, Dames at Sea, and most recently Little Women
A familiar face in Door County theatre, Bruce has enjoyed seasons with Door Off Broadway dinner theatre, community productions with the Isadoora Theatre Company, and countless collaborations with area musicians.
Since retiring from teaching music, Bruce has been able to devote even more time to composing and performing. When he’s not behind an instrument, he can often be found woodworking or spending time with his wife Karen and their menagerie of pets at home in Sturgeon Bay.

Neen designed and constructed costumes, sets and props for numerous shows starting in the later years of the Heritage Ensemble and continuing through the AFT years. She served as Northern Sky’s production stage manager for their summer and fall seasons since that position was created through 2020. Neen worked at Northern Sky for over thirty years, and her contributions to the company as a designer, stage manager, mentor, and beloved friend were too numerous and far-reaching to write in one paragraph. Her extensive credits designing props for dozens of Northern Sky shows include Loose Lips Sink Ships, Packer Fans from Outer Space, Muskie Love, Victory Farm, The Bachelors, Guys on Ice, Guys & Does, Cheeseheads! The Musical, and Dad’s Season Tickets. In addition to her Northern Sky family, Neen had an extensive network of colleagues and friends in Madison, where she grew up. She worked at many venues there, including Children’s Theater of Madison, Madison Ballet, Madison Opera, and the Overture Center. What is NOVA? NOVA stands for Nurturing Original Voices and Artists. It is Northern Sky Theater’s nextgeneration new works development and incubation initiative. The goal of NOVA is to foster, nurture, and expand creative opportunities for alumni, BIPOC, and emerging writers in Northern Sky’s development process.
“The Nova Initiative is a reflection of what Northern Sky has always been,” said Lachrisa Grandberry, Director of NOVA Programming. “In my time working on Sunflowered, I learned so much in the
writing process and could not have done it without the hands-on support of the leadership staff. I am a former teacher, and I enjoy using that knowledge to further this part of Northern Sky’s Mission. I’m excited to pay it forward and be more intimately involved with my theater home. Even more, I’m excited about the infinite possibilities coming as we continue to make space for next generation storytellers.”
NOVA’s principle element is Writing Circle, a six-week program held several times a year for writers to explore their voice, work on new scripts, learn more about Northern Sky, and hone their craft through exercises and peer review. Carri is delighted to be painting for Northern Sky this season! She currently works with Spotlight Construction in Milwaukee as their scenic charge. Her work can be seen onstage at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Next Act Theatre and Forward Theater Company. She has also painted for Florentine Opera Company, Spotlight Construction, Opera Lafayette, Luci Creative, Black Arts MKE, Renaissance Theaterworks, Skylight Opera Theatre, and Kohl’s Wild Theatre and has taught scenic painting at UW-Milwaukee. In addition to painting, she enjoys her garden and her cats.

Nerissa Pauline Eichinger is a professional scenic artist and educator with over a decade of industry experience. They currently serve as an instructor at UW-Milwaukee, teaching stage craft and scenic painting to the next generation of theater makers. Nerissa specializes in sculpture for the stage as well as large-scale wood sculpture for public works, collaborating with schools and organizations to create prominent installations. Whether in the scenic shop or the studio, they remain dedicated to the intersection of technical precision and public art.

Joe BonDurant is over the moon to spend his first summer with Northern Sky! Like so many, Teresa first visited Door County with her parents when she was young. Originally from Milwaukee, this “up north” experience was most certainly her favorite destination among the family vacations. She recently retired from Door County Medical Center Outpatient Rehab Services, and her first experience at Northern Sky Theater was attending Doctor! Doctor! in 2016. The storyline, which linked Milwaukee to “Sister Harbor,” felt a bit prophetic and Northern Sky Theater became a treasured element in what is now home.
Teresa and her husband, Gary, moved to the Town of Clay Banks from Appleton in 2013 to finish their careers; the friendships made and experiences enjoyed here have enriched their lives more than they had ever dreamed possible.

Jimmy started writing songs with Fred Alley in 1992. In addition to the opening and closing songs in Tongue’N Cheek, his shows written with Fred include Fishing for the Moon, Northern Lights, Lumberjacks in Love, The Bachelors, and Guys on Ice, all directed by Jeff Herbst. With collaborator Laurie Flanigan Hegge, he created Northern Sky’s See Jane Vote, and collaborated with Jacinda Duffin and Laurie Flanigan Hegge to create Loose Lips Sink Ships. His music also appeared in Belgians in Heaven, Hell’s Belgians, Packer Fans from Outer Space, Ya Ya You Betcha, Fool Me Once and the original Bone Dance. Twenty-five years ago this spring, Northern Sky lost its brilliant co-founder. Fred Alley—who had just won the Richard Rodgers Award for writing the best new musical in America (The Spitfire Grill)—died at age 38 of an unsuspected heart condition while jogging down a Door County backroad. There’s no easy way to describe Fred. Those of us who knew and loved him were changed forever by his warmth, humor, and generous nature. He was handsome, radiant, charismatic, and deeply spiritual—equally prone to passion and silliness. He had the voice of an archangel and the work ethic of Hercules. He loved movies and meaningful conversation and good wine and poetry and the Packers. Most of all, he loved holing up in his tiny Door County farmhouse bedroom with his typewriter, squealing for joy as he coaxed unruly words to do his bidding.
Fred may have left us, but those words remain in abundance. His impressive legacy includes not just The Spitfire Grill (an Off-Broadway hit that’s now had over a thousand productions worldwide), but also the beloved and hilarious musicals he co-authored for our theater (e.g., Guys on Ice, Lumberjacks in Love). In addition, Fred created a remarkable body of more personal songs—some released on albums, others heard only by a lucky handful of us on front-porch steps or around a blazing late-night campfire.
This June, we’re delighted to offer a sampling of this work in five nights of concerts at our lovely indoor Gould Theater. Everyone in our cast either knew him well or was deeply influenced by him. We’ll be sharing anecdotes about Fred, along with some of our favorite songs he wrote. The program will include audience favorites from his shows (many with melodies by Jimmy Kaplan) as well as lesser-known—but beautiful— singer-songwriter material.
Fred may be gone, but we can still revel in the gifts he left us. Please join us for this celebration of an extraordinary artist.

Katie Dahl is a nationally touring singer-songwriter and musical playwright who makes her year-round home in Door County. As a troubadour known for wry humor and deep vulnerability, Katie plays more than 100 shows a year across the country. In 2025, she won the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Contest. Northern Sky audiences will also recognize Katie for her work on Victory Farm (co-written with Emilie Coulson and James Valcq) and The Fisherman’s Daughters; she has two other musicals in progress. ZACHARY WOODS Director
Zach Thomas Woods has worked professionally as an actor, director, playwright, and educator in the greater Milwaukee area for nearly 15 years. In addition to directing over a dozen productions at the Zoological Society of Milwaukee’s Kohl’s Wild Theater, Woods has helmed productions of Julius Caesar, The Miss Firecracker Contest, Death by Design, Arsenic and Old Lace, Evita, Footloose, and more on various local stages. As a performer he has previously appeared at Northern Sky, Skylight Music Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theater, First Stage, Next Act Theatre, and Optimist Theater. When not on stage, Woods works as the associate director of education at Milwaukee Rep.

A funny thing about binoculars: They can bring a faraway warbler into breathtaking focus. They can also make you overlook the person right beside you. Or make you walk straight into a tree.
The Thing with Feathers began with a pair of binoculars. When we came to Northern Sky for the revival of Windjammers, Robin had just gotten into birding. Suddenly a walk in the woods, something we had done dozens of times, became a quest — a rustle of leaves, a flash of color, an elusive bird spotted, whoo-hoo! — and all of this, just steps from the theatre!
Which made us wonder: what if we did a show about birds? About birdwatching? About those slightly unhinged folks who set their alarms for 4 a.m. to go stand in a swamp?
The birders you’ll meet are a funny, quirky bunch. Spend any time among them and you realize: this isn’t really about birds. It’s about all of us — our passions, our pursuits, the obsessions that make us who we are. And the people in our lives who have to figure out what on earth to do with all that.
And then there are the birds themselves, living their best lives just over our heads. (Yes, there are birds in the show. Yes, they sing. And yes, they have opinions about humans. Not all of them flattering.)
Birders are optimists. They know better than most that the natural world is fragile, but it’s also resilient. A species comes back. A forest regrows. A single hatchling survives and thrives. Possibly with an attitude.
If you’re not a birder, we hope our show gives you a new reason to linger on your next walk. If you are a birder, we hope you recognize yourself or someone you know, laugh a little, and overlook the dramatic liberties we took — the birds made us do it.
So here’s to putting the binoculars down, to see what’s right in front of us. And to picking them up again. After all, the birds are out there. And they’re not gonna watch themselves.

AT NORTHERN SKY THEATER

Peninsula State Park is one of Wisconsin’s best birding spots, and even in that short stroll from the parking lot to Northern Sky Theater, you’ll find yourself in the midst of birds.
The path winds through cedars and pines that come alive on summer evenings. Pause and listen. You might catch the flutelike song of a Wood Thrush—one of the most beautiful sounds in the woods. Higher up, a Black-throated Green Warbler buzzes its zee-zee-zoo-zee, while Red-eyed Vireos chatter endlessly from the canopy.
Closer in, an Eastern Wood-Pewee gives its tired, trailing pee-a-wee, like it’s already winding down for the day. And that loud, echoing, slightly unhinged laughter? A Pileated Woodpecker—crow-sized, red-crested, and impossible to ignore. Glance up and you might even catch a Bald Eagle riding the last light over the bay.
After the show, linger a moment. The woods shift. If you’re quiet, you may hear a Barred Owl calling into the dark: “Who cooks for you?”
You came for the show. But there’s one happening right outside the theater, too.

Clay is thrilled to return to Northern Sky Theater, home of many of his happiest memories, where his and Robin Share’s musical Windjammers premiered in 2013. His musicals Greenbrier Ghost, Lost in Staten Island, and I Am Star Trek have been performed in NYC, London, and regional theaters. Clay lives in Connecticut with his wife Melissa and their cats Aschenputtel, Augusta, and Camembert, and teaches musical theater writing at the University of Hartford. A proud member of the Dramatists Guild and BMI, he is a runner, a pretty good cook, and an occasional producer of TV game shows. More than anything else, he believes in collaboration, the power of the finished first draft, and in showing up.

It’s been twenty years for Chase at Northern Sky! In these two decades he’s appeared in 29 shows, crocheted tons of hats, and mesmerized audiences in many favorite roles, including Bart and Mike in Naked Radio, Moonlight in Lumberjacks in Love, Samuel Clemens in Life on the Mississippi, and Stu in The Bachelors. This past winter Chase reprised his role of Charlie in The Fisherman’s Daughters at the Milwaukee Rep. Then he went back to his favorite role, chauffeur to his busy talented daughter Silvia. Doug has performed with Northern Sky Theater for two-plus decades. He has many favorite shows he’s been a part of at Northern Sky Theater, including Lumberjacks in Love, Belgians in Heaven, Muskie Love, Guys and Does, Windjammers, Dad’s Season Tickets, Bone Dance and many more. He is perhaps best known for playing Marvin in Guys on Ice, a role he has performed countless times and is pretty confident hovers around the 2,000 mark. After living and performing in NYC for several years, he moved back to his home state of Wisconsin in the mid 2000s and hasn’t looked back. He has acted with most of the professional theaters in Wisconsin and graduated from New York University’s MFA program for actors. His film resume includes the indie cult film, Hundreds of Beavers, currently showing in select theaters and most streaming platforms. Go Pack!

Dan is a theater maker, fight director, and educator based in Door County. He has performed at Third Avenue PlayWorks, Peninsula Players, Door Shakespeare, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Children’s Theater Madison, Artists Ensemble, First Folio Theater, Theater at the Center, The Goodman Theater, and the Great American Melodrama, but Northern Sky will always be his first theater home. Dan is the Education Coordinator at Third Avenue PlayWorks and has taught classes and workshops at several universities and for all ages here in Door County. Dan received his BA from UW Stevens Point and his MA from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Originally from Wisconsin, Peter is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (NYC) and lives in Los Angeles. He has workshopped oodles of musicals as an actor, book writer, director, and producer. He co-produced and curated the highly successful A Little New Music concert series focused on new musical theater works at Rockwell Table and Stage, Catalina Jazz Club, and the Wallis Annenberg Performing Arts Center. He’s busy writing a new musical based on a unique photograph found in his family’s genealogy album. But his favorite creative works to date are still Miranda, Nathan and Genevieve!

“You must pay the rent!” “But I can’t pay the rent!” A post-pandemic meltdown? No, just a classic plot set-up from a bygone era of scheming villains trying to ruin the innocent. Welcome to Melodrama!
Melodrama by the book: a sensational dramatic piece with exaggerated characters and exciting events intended to appeal to the emotions. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, melodramas were the YouTube of the era, serving up everything from frivolous romantic comedies to extremely dark yet socially relevant stories.
For a classic melodrama to work, you must have a heroine whose life is put into peril by the onerous villain. And, of course, there must be a hero to save the heroine and overcome the dreadful villain. OK, it’s not very PC these days, but add some melodramatic music to build the tension and underscore the plot and we’re off and running. This ain’t your greatgrandparents’ melodrama. It’s built like a classic, but it’s a parody! So, get ready to have some fun!
Some of the best parodies of the melodrama style have always been the Dudley Do-Right cartoons from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. The tongue-in-cheek humor was funny and wry, and created a self-aware sensibility to the characters. We wanted to bring that playful “wink and a nod” kind of fun to the story. And we wanted it to be rooted in at least some of the realities of living in this region just before Wisconsin became a state in 1847.
After eleven years, Northern Sky has revived our silly work, and we couldn’t be more excited to see the latest incarnation, and more importantly, to see how the Northern Sky audience responds to our orphaned Wisconsin farm girl trying to save the family farm from the treacherous villain, while our strapping hero tries to save her from ruin. RANDI WOLFE Lyricist
Randi is an alumnus of Theatre Building Chicago’s Musical Theater Writers Workshop. Born and raised in the Midwest, Randi moved to California in 2007 and became very involved in New Musicals Inc. in Los Angeles. She is proud to have collaborated with fellow NMI members on this show. Her work also includes Mom! A New Musical, which has been performed at theaters throughout the Midwest and most recently at the Chameleon Theatre Circle in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. Aside from her work as a lyricist, Randi is founder and executive director of Early Care & Education Pathways to Success (ECEPTS), a nationally recognized leader in developing Registered Apprenticeships tailored to the unique needs of the child care and early learning workforce.

Silvia is ecstatic to be a puppeteer in The Thing with Feathers here in Pen Park where she’s grown up watching shows her whole life. She spends half the year in Door County and the other half in Milwaukee, where she did her first show at the age of seven. Favorite roles include Rudolph in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer at First Stage, Snug the Joiner in A Rockin’ Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Skylight, Colin in Secret Garden at Forte Theater, Ulysses in Flora and Ulysses at Milwaukee Youth Theater, and Spring in Maybe We’ll Fly at Milwaukee Opera Theater. Just recently, she got to play her dream role Scar in Lion King Jr. at Creator Collaborative. She attends Wisconsin Virtual Academy and will enter high school in the fall.

MATT ZEMBROWSKI

Matt has been a die-hard fan of Northern Sky Theater since 1995, and has been camping in Peninsula Park with his family since he was five months old. In recent years, Matt has had the honor of seeing three shows that he’s written — Doctor! Doctor!, Whatever Happend to Karl Janko?, and Something in the Water — performed by his favorite company on his favorite stage. He also wrote Dad’s Season Tickets, the inaugural production at Northern Sky’s Gould Theater, which has gone on to be performed all over the state. 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of his creative collaboration with the inestimable Molly Rhode, who continues to guide and inspire his work. Matt’s latest show, the basketball-inspired musical MKE MVP, will have its world premiere at Milwaukee Repertory Theater in January. Matt lives in West Allis with his wife Lori, and daughters Kathryn and Charlotte. He also directs the theater program at his Alma Mater, Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay.

Lately, I find myself sounding more and more like a grumpy old man. In fact, I’ve started using the phrase “back in my day” pretty regularly, without irony and without shame. When I was growing up, “Full House” was one of the most popular shows on television, and the first line of the song that played over the opening credits ruefully asked “Whatever happened to predictability?” And lately I’ve been wondering the same thing.
I had been hard at work on Something in the Water when COVID hit and everything shut down. And I, like many of you I’m sure, started asking some hard questions about the world, and whether what we do even matters. I wondered if people would ever be interested in seeing a silly show like Something in the Water when (if?) we managed to make it past that dark period in our history. When things started going back to ‘normal’, it became clear to me that not only would people be interested, but some people might actually NEED to see a show like my silly musical farce. And just as importantly, I needed to see it.
I didn’t get into writing to push an agenda. Call me old fashioned, but the only thing I’ve ever wanted to accomplish as a writer was to bring people together to share a few laughs, maybe a few tears, and to leave the theater feeling a little better than they did when they arrived. But lately I’ve come to realize that maybe I do have a mission: to write the kinds of shows that I would want to see. Now, I’m not implying that my personal taste is any more important than anybody else’s. But I know what I like, and I know what I don’t like, and if some of the comments I heard after performances of Something in the Water last year are a true indicator, a lot of people are looking for the same thing I’m looking for in an evening’s entertainment. And that’s what keeps me going.

Doc Heide Album Release Concert
Join Doc Heide and his band Zen of Thieves on Sunday, July 19, at our Gould Theater for the release concert for their new album Birthplace of the Thunder. Described as “arrestingly beautiful,” the songs on the album offer a psychospiritual take on today’s world, exploring compassion, optimism, mysticism, myth, and the life of Northern Sky legend Fred Alley. The concert features Northern Sky artists Eric Lewis, Karen Mal, Jimmy Kaplan, Amy Chaffee, Lee Becker, Matt Zembrowski, Steve Koehler, and Holly Feldman, plus Grammy nominees Hans Christian (cello) and Paul Taylor (drums), as well as Door County favorite Paul Sowinski (2025 BAMMY Award for Bassist of the Year), along with other special guests. He has performed previously in Door County as Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet at Door Shakespeare, a company for whom he directed Julius Caesar. He is an associate artist at Milwaukee Rep, and was a member of their Resident Acting Company for 38 years, appearing in more than two hundred productions. He is married to the wonderful Tami Workentin.

Wisconsin’s Musical Historian and Northern Sky’s “Godfather”
David has been called the Godfather of this theatre because he started his Heritage Ensemble program in Peninsula State Park in the early 1970s. Upon his retirement in 1990, he encouraged a couple of resident cast members to pick up the mantle and continue play production in the amphitheater. They did, founding a new nonprofit company that they named American Folklore Theatre. In 2015, Northern Sky celebrated the extraordinary life of Dave Peterson. Members of the Heritage Ensemble, AFT, and Northern Sky presented a concert of stories and songs generously hosted by Dave’s wife, Joan, and long-time family friend, Amy Chaffee.

Kathleen is returning for her 10th season as part of the Northern Sky family. Following a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma diagnosis in February 2025 and a long journey of chemotherapy throughout the year, she is thrilled to be back full time in 2026. Kathleen is deeply grateful for the unwavering support she received from Northern Sky, the incredible volunteer team, and her wider community during her treatment. Her passion for the arts, combined with the welcoming and inspiring atmosphere of the company, continues to draw her back to Northern Sky year after year.

Marketing Director / Events Coordinator
Sophie is thrilled to be in her third year with Northern Sky Theater as the marketing director and events coordinator. Originally from Boulder Creek, California, Sophie spent much of her early life visiting family in Madison, Wisconsin, and familiarizing herself to the change in season and snow. She graduated in 2018 from Ripon College with a degree in theatre and music and moved to the Twin Cities, where she worked for The National Theatre for Children during the day and acted professionally at night. Sophie first came to Door County in 2016, when she saw her first Northern Sky show, thanks to her husband, Jimmy Balistreri, and instantly fell in love with the company, the songs, and the mission. In her spare time, Sophie enjoys camping with her husband, taking walks in state parks, and drinking lots of tea. She would love to thank her family for all their love and support in getting her to where she is today.

Facilities Manager
Rich is an Iowa-born potter and multi-instrumentalist who lives year-round in Baileys Harbor. He is known for his skills on upright bass, washboard, spoons, jug, and ukulele, all of which he plays as a founding member of the Sheboygan-based string band The Water Street Hot Shots. He’s also a frequent stagemate to songwriter Katie Dahl (who he happens to be married to). As an actor, Rich worked extensively with Paul Sills, pioneer of story theatre. When he isn’t hanging out with his family (Katie, their ten-year-old son Guthrie, and their sweet dog Rosie), Rich can often be found cooking, tapping trees for maple syrup, or on the pickleball court.

Katie is thrilled to begin her fifth year with Northern Sky, an organization she’s long admired since growing up in Sturgeon Bay. She earned a BA in chemistry from St. Olaf College, her teaching certificate at Lawrence University, and a MSE in physics education at UW-River Falls. Katie has pivoted her love of numbers and balancing chemical equations to the back-office activities at Northern Sky. She’s been attending performances since 1993 and started bringing her kids along as preschoolers. They love that Mom works at such an amazing place. Before this she taught science classes for over a decade at Sevastopol. You can still catch Katie teaching, but now it’s spin and yoga for the Door County YMCA. She’d like to wish the company, volunteers, and patrons a wonderful season.

Box Office Manager
Becky is enjoying her sixth season as Northern Sky Theater’s box office manager. She is delighted to be working with Northern Sky’s incredible box office and front-of-house teams, which includes a high school student from the Door County Summer Horizons program. Her background includes 32 years in technical sales support and management at IBM, over 30 years of playing in her church bell choir, and some piano playing when she can find the time. She is blessed to be able to spend her summers with her family at their cottage on Kangaroo Lake and is looking forward to another fantastic Northern Sky season!

Sue has been a part of Northern Sky since 2007. She has worn many hats over the years since joining the company, from volunteer to office staff to house manager. Sue is very much looking foward to spending her summer in the park with our amazing company and volunteers! In the off-season, Sue works for Sturgeon Bay Schools where she is a part of the 4th grade team as a special education teacher. She enjoys singing and playing fiddle and mandolin. In her down time, Sue loves hiking, kayaking, camping, and anything outdoors. Sue shares her home with her furry friends Elgie and Clover.

After spending those early days ushering, Barb now is on staff in the ticket office, merchandise, concessions, ushering and master popcorn maker. She loves catering to cast and crew on two-show nights. She has over 45 years experience acting, directing, producing and accompanying. Favorites include directing Forever Plaid (Area Community Theater, Old Barn Players) and playing Yente in Fiddler on the Roof (Summer Recruit Troupe) and Ennis in Dashing through the Snow (Rogue Theatre). In her spare time she is wife to Dale and mom to Rache and Sebastian, the famous Saint Bernards. Barb is an active member of her local Farkle club and will spend her summer defending her title.

Wow! Well, we made it through that winter and it is great to see the grass growing and the sun shining. Just like the shows you are going to be excited to see this summer here at the theater. Our St. Bernard Rache got a new brother last fall, adopting another St. Bernard, Sebastian. He has been trying to get him to behave like a St. Bernard. What a challenge. It’s great to be back working in the box office and seeing all the friends that I have met through the years selling tickets to them. Hiding at the box office in the park during the day keeps things a lot calmer for Becky at the Gould Theater and less candy being eaten. Enjoy the park during the day and top it off with a fabulous show at Northern Sky in the evening. What a perfect way to spend a day in Door County. ENJOY!!!

Nina is delighted to be returning to Northern Sky for her ninth Season under the stars. She started her journey with the company as a volunteer during the 2017 and 2018 summer seasons. She began working in the box office in 2019 and has loved working there ever since. She has held various roles over her time with the company, including production assistant for the world premiere of Dad’s Season Tickets in 2019 and as assistant stage manager for the revival production in 2022. Nina was last seen on stage in the role of Princess Wanna Wampum, as a part of Rogue Theater’s Dealt a Deadly Hand: Death at the Casino Royale. She will be reprising her portrayal of that character in the same comedic murder mystery play, for the production’s run at the DC Arts Center this September. She is quite excited to see the world premiere of The Thing with Feathers this summer in the park. Nina hopes you greatly enjoy the show!
Northern Sky’s One Act of Kindness Society, launched in 2021, celebrates those who have chosen to create a lasting legacy by including Northern Sky in their will, trust, or estate plan. The phrase “one act of kindness” comes from the lyrics of a song in the musical, Boxcar. The song insists that one act of kindness often ripples out into many others by reminding us “there is good in the world.”

In 2006 Northern Sky Theater established the Fred Alley New Musical Fund to honor the memory of Fred Alley, co-founder of the company and playwright of many of our most popular productions including Guys on Ice and Lumberjacks in Love. Contributions to this fund are used exclusively for the creation and development of new musicals.

Northern Sky offers many different ways to get involved with the theatre experience – ushering, selling concessions, guiding parking and assisting our guests, as well as assisting with special events. Volunteers can choose what job they would like to do and their hours – no matter what you enjoy doing and when you enjoy doing it, there is a task for everyone.

OUTDOOR PARK RAIN POLICY
The show will go on if at all possible. Northern Sky staff will wait to decide on cancelling a show until show time, or even a bit after if the weather appears to be passing. If the show is less than half over when called off, you will have the option of either a refund or a rain check ticket, which is good for any future Northern Sky performance without expiration (watch for an email from our office). Otherwise guests will be issued rain check tickets only. If you choose not to attend and the show goes on as scheduled, there are no refunds.
