UNI@IACC program expands Mark Nook strengthens partnership with visit to IHCC TALIYA JAMES

Staff Writer

On Tuesday, Sept. 13, Mark Nook solidified the partnership between Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) and UNI. This will give students the opportunity to earn their bachelor’s degree online. According to Paul Sapp, the interim IACC director, the program started in January of 2020. It began with the partnership between UNI and Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) which placed him on the DMACC urban campus in downtown Des Moines. “The main focus of this partnership has been the recruitment of placebound students into online programs through UNI,” Sapp said. “These students are typically place-bound because they’re working adults, or own homes in the Des Moines area, or have children, so it’s not realistic for them to come to Cedar Falls to complete a degree.” After completing their degree through DMACC, students can now stay at home and complete one of the seven UNI degrees: Bachelor of Liberal Studies, Bachelor

of Arts (BA) in Elementary Education, BA in Management: Business, Administration, BA in Human Services, BA in Technology Management, Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Managing Business & Organizations and a BAS or BA in Criminal Justice. The partnership will soon be expanded to Western Iowa Tech Community College, Iowa Western Community College and Indian Hills Community College. “We will have UNI Student Support Specialists at each of those community colleges, in

addition to DMACC – but students from any Iowa community college can do one of these online programs,” Sapp said. Many opportunities are opened up by this program. “Students in these programs are eligible for Future Ready Scholarships. If eligible, the scholarship makes their UNI tuition roughly the same level as what they paid to attend the community college. Therefore, it makes UNI tuition accessible and affordable…,” Sapp said.

See

Projects and budgeting for the future of UNI NIXSON BENITEZ Executive Editor

Last week, the Iowa Board of Regents met and approved the Fiscal Year 2024 appropriations request for about a total of $630 million. About $530 million are for the university appropriations request. The demand factors in inflation rates, which are close to the highest rates experienced in the U.S. during the 1970s and early 1980s. The outcome of this request will be decided during legislation in January. Currently UNI’s Five Year capital plan for funds is $113 million, which hasn’t changed from last year. Many of the funds requested would cover renovations, parking/insti-

tutional roads, construction, utility improvements and future projects. The university has a backlog of more than $212 million in building renewal, a 1 percent increase from last year. Personnel focus their resources on a priority system that addresses safety issues, educational support and repair of facilities equipment. For the 2023 fiscal year, about $34 million in building renewal projects have been identified. UNI-Dome and other renovations The $8 million project proposed would replace the center portion of the UNI-Dome roof. In 1976 the Dome was built with an air supported fabric roof system. It was the

first in the U.S. to ever have fabric as a roof. In 1999, it was replaced with a higher-quality fabric. In 2010, the outer metal was replaced, giving it the current white roof, due to hail damage and carried a 30-year warranty through 2040. This project would recoat the perimeter concrete support beam as well as install safety lines and anchor points on the entire roof to improve safety for the maintenance staff. The board approved the fabric portion of the Dome, and construction will take place in Spring 2023. This will be funded through general fund building renewal, gifts and grants, department renewal and replacement funds and a possible sale of bonds. The largest single project
