Residents of Pasco Road inWestVancouver say they were shocked recently to see signs telling them the only access to their neighbourhood would be shut down for large chunks of time this summer while crews fixed a faulty retaining wall that’s part of the new Seato-Sky Highway. That’s raised questions — both for neighbours in the 20 homes who will see access to their homes significantly curtailed for the next five months, and for critics, who wonder why such a new highway already needs major repairs. Jan Easton, who lives on Pasco Road, said he only found out about the plan after he drove by a large flashing sign on the highway warning his road would be closed from April 27 to Sept. 30. Nobody who lives on the road was told in advance about the planned closure he said. Nor were they happy about it. Pasco Road, a residential street that fronts Howe Sound just north of Horseshoe Bay, only has one access — a road built right next to a large rock retaining wall that is part of what holds up the underside of the Sea-toSky Highway. “It’s a vital link,” he said, adding people who live in the area need to be able to get to work, schools, and other appointments

A group of retired WestVancouver men is celebrating after the Conservative ﬁnance minister adopted a measure in the budget Tuesday they’ve been pressing the government on for two years. Brooke Campbell, a

retired executive, said he and a group of retired lawyers, accountants and investment professionals are “absolutely delighted” that the government has changed the rules around Registered Retirement Income Fund withdrawals. The change lowers the minimum amounts seniors must take out of their Register Retirement

Income Funds each year from 7.38 per cent at 71 to 5.28 per cent of the total. That amount still climbs as seniors age. Campbell said the change is recognition of the work his group has done to convince the government the rules around RRIFs needed changing. When those rules were ﬁrst drawn up, in 1992,

Coun. Robin Hicks echoed those concerns about “sameness” among the proposed Polygon development and its neighbours at Canyon Springs and Branches. “They’re not unattractive in themselves, but the prospect of having several blocks of that ... to me is not terribly attractive,” Hicks said. “By limiting height we’ve boxed ourselves in.” Mayor Richard Walton suggested he would be reluctant to lift restrictions on building height in Lynn Valley, which were forged after lengthy public discussions. “All the red lights are going on right now in terms of public trust,” he said.

Buildings in the Mountain Court development would be limited to approximately 60 feet. If approved, the project would be built over about five years and likely bring 500 cars to Lynn Valley. That was too many for Coun. Jim Hanson, who voted against the project, citing concerns about increasing densification in Lynn Valley. A consultants’ report concluded the project would bring 215 cars to the area during rush hour. That traffic would be split between Mountain Gate at Mountain Highway and Library Lane at East 27th Street. While he supported the project, Coun. Roger Bassam requested more details regarding the proposed community amenity contribution. If council approves

the project, Polygon development company has volunteered to offer the district $100,000. The money is earmarked for public art. Polygon would also pay for a new Library Lane and bankroll a wider 27th Street which would feature a separated bike lane. Council is set to revisit the project following a review of design guidelines in Lynn Valley, which is tentatively set for June 1. The Mountain Court project features studio units and three bedroom apartments ranging from 491 to 1,234 square feet. The 75 rental units would be concentrated in one building while the 246 condos would be spread over the remaining three buildings. Coun. Doug MacKayDunn did not attend the meeting.

A four-building, 321-unit development in Lynn Valley took its first step toward construction Monday following a split vote from District of North Vancouver council. The East 27th Street project would divide 246 condos and 75 rental units among a quartet of five-storey buildings spread over four acres on Mountain Court. A staff report notes the “easy walking distance” to a shopping centre, the Karen Magnussen rec centre and Viewlynn Park. However, one more major construction project means there will be no peace in Lynn Valley, according to Coun. Lisa Muri. “I do not understand how council can so easily move forward with so many of these projects and not understand how we’re going to manage them,” Muri said. Muri blasted the project for failing to provide affordable housing and adding more cars to a gridlock-prone area. Muri put forth a motion to defer Monday’s vote until council debates design guidelines for Lynn Valley. The motion failed but the longtime councillor was supported by council watcher Dan Ellis, who expressed concerns over council taking a “piecemeal approach” to the area. “I’m baffled as to why it’s coming forward before the guidelines have been resolved,” Ellis said. no more oil to come ashore but out of an abundance of caution, we’re reminding people that it’s still possible that they’ll ﬁnd some small amounts of oil on beaches,” McDonald said. The City of North Vancouver has also had to post advisories along the waterfront in the Harbourside area warning visitors to avoid the water

and shoreline. City staff spotted oil on the rocky shore shortly after it was ﬁrst seen in West Vancouver. As of Thursday afternoon, the fuel had been cleaned and the warning signs were scheduled to come down. Any future sightings of oil coming on shore should be reported to Emergency Management BC at 1-800663-3456.

Deep Cove is so darn popular that it’s beset by a turf war over who should be allowed to park there. The District of North Vancouver has stepped up parking enforcement, is looking at using 120 spaces at nearby schools and issued permits to residents of Panorama Drive. But there are no plans to pave paradise and put up a parking lot for the throngs of Quarry Rock hikers — at least not yet. “You could put parking lot after parking lot after parking lot in Deep Cove and you are never going to solve the problem,“ exclaimed Coun. Lisa Muri, at a committee of the whole meeting Tuesday. Also discussed was whether the district should offer a life raft to boataccess-only Indian Arm residents who are on the Belcarra or Electoral Area A tax role but moor, and therefore park a vehicle, in Deep Cove. Some Indian Arm residents moor at a small marina at the tip of Panorama Drive, where a parking deficit in that cramped lot has forced many boaters to park on the narrow roadway. Last fall, a group of Indian Arm residents claimed unfair treatment when the district issued them a single pass, while Panorama Drive residents received three. Council has conceded on that matter, recently allowing 12 more permits on Panorama Drive — five of which will go to non-district Indian Arm residents. The district, to date, has allotted 230 parking passes for 55 possible spots on Panorama Drive. Muri spoke in support of non-district Indian Arm residents, saying to uproot their lives by denying them parking on Panorama is “just not very neighbourly.” Coun. Robin Hicks suggested, on a one-year basis, the district provide sufficient passes to anyone currently relying on the marina to commute. Parking conflicts in Deep Cove came to a head a couple summers ago. Frustrated Panorama Drive residents voiced their concerns about traffic

problems that have plagued their narrow street and created a perilous situation. There have been reports of damaged vehicles, blocked driveways, noise pollution and traffic congestion.The district addressed some of those concerns by instituting residents-only parking on Panorama Drive at the outset of last summer. In February the district decided to get a greater picture of the Deep Cove parking situation and commissioned Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Dialogue to host a meeting with area stakeholders.Their suggestions were included in a report that informed a parking implementation plan prepared by district staff. One of the measures approved by council in March and currently being implemented is the addition of 10 spaces in the Panorama Drive and Rockcliff Road parking lots. As another busy tourist season approaches, the district says it’s anticipating more complaints. A large part of the problem is Quarry Rock trail, which has surged in popularity of late. Mayor Richard Walton was firm on his position Tuesday that anyone hiking that trail can walk an extra 10 to 15 minutes to a parking lot at Myrtle Park or Cove Cliff or Seycove schools. Councillors rejected a proposal for a parking lot at Indian River Drive. Hicks was in favour of putting in a pay parking lot separate from the Cove, where tour buses could park. Meanwhile, Coun. Roger Bassam was adamant that the district should not be using more taxpayers’ money — $43,000 in direct costs to date, he estimated — to fix “what is really quite a small problem.” A motion to support the longer term parking strategy, which includes giving five permits to non-district Indian Arm residents, looking at allowing overnight parking in parks and to halt the study of a new parking lot was approved 4-1, with Bassam dissenting. Coun. Jim Hanson recused himself from the discussion because his family owns a boat-access-only property on Indian Arm, while Coun. Doug MacKayDunn was absent.

Mayors await federal funds for treatment plant

“I realized if you’re going to get anything through government, you have to work with your member of parliament.” Campbell’s group went to West Vancouver MP John Weston, who advised them on how to set up a town hall meeting and how to make a submission to the House of Commons ﬁnance committee. Campbell said he also chatted up the issue with the other side of the political spectrum, having a sit-down with NDP MP Libby Davies. On Tuesday, the West Vancouver group saw their efforts pay off, when Finance Minister Joe Oliver announced the change as part of the budget. Weston said the change shows “engaged citizens can get things done” when they work within the system and are willing to approach politicians with their ideas. Weston said similar citizen involvement was behind a win for the Paciﬁc Salmon Foundation, which was awarded $2 million for research into why survival rates for juvenile salmon in the Georgia Strait and Strait of Juan de Fuca have been dropping. Among measures offered to Lower Mainland voters, the budget Tuesday promised a new $1-billion Public Transit Fund for transit infrastructure. The announcement comes as Lower Mainland mayors are counting on federal dollars to cover part of the cost of big-ticket transportation projects. But the tap won’t be turned on for that fund for two years and will start at $250 million for the whole

country. One project that didn’t figure in any budget announcement was the federal funds still being sought by North Shore mayors to pay a share of the $700-million Lions Gate Sewage Treatment Plant. During a stop in North Vancouver last week for a transportation funding announcement with North Vancouver MP Andrew Saxton, Industry Minister James Moore agreed the treatment plant is “a very important project” but made no specific commitment. District of North Vancouver Mayor Richard Walton said municipalities can’t go ahead with the project until both Ottawa and Victoria commit to their share of the costs. “Right now we are supposed to have it done by 2020, but I don’t think we are going to be breaking ground until who’s paying for it comes into effect,” he said. Other measures announced in the budget included upping the amount Canadians can sock away in tax-free savings accounts to $10,000.The Conservatives previously announced income-splitting rules for families, which allow a higher-earning spouse to transfer part of their income to a lower-earning spouse for tax purposes. Critics of those policies, including leaders of both the NDP and Liberal parties, have said those moves disproportionately benefit wealthier Canadians. They also criticized the government for producing a balanced budget by dipping into contingency funds to the tune of $2 billion.

Bhatti said the wall has been tested by engineers, and there are no safety concerns. But over the lifespan of the highway, problems could develop. Bhatti said equipment must be brought in for the repairs and there is only one place for it to go. Staff met with residents on Monday and are now proposing shorter twohour closures with 15 to 20 minute access in between.

Staff have also been talking to emergency crews about how quickly they could get through in an emergency. Easton said many residents would rather the work be done at night, to minimize inconvenience. Bhatti said that isn’t a great solution either — both for safety of the workers and quality control. He added some of the work involves drilling and will be loud. Jordan Sturdy, MLA for West Vancouver Sea to Sky, said he’s spoken with residents and has sympathy with their dilemma. “Obviously there’s no optimal time to do it,” he said. But he added, “Ultimately this work does need to be done.” Claire Trevena, NDP transportation critic, said she’s concerned the

highway retaining wall needs repairing only ﬁve years after it was built. “The fact we’re talking about doing repairs for it now is very troubling.” Bhatti described the

problem as an “anomaly,” adding the contractor is paying for the repairs. So far a decision on when and how Pasco Road will be closed has not been ﬁnalized.

uestioned on whether tax changes in the federal budget would result in long-term revenue problems for the government by shielding too many investments, Finance Minister Joe Oliver had a troubling response. “Why don’t we leave that to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s granddaughter to solve?” he said in a CBC interview, adding later: “If you have to go to 2080 to say there’s a problem with the program, I think you’ve got a pretty good program.” The Prime Minister’s yet-to-be-born granddaughter, however, might disagree. So might millions of younger Canadians who will be living with the long-term consequences of decisions made today. The same deliberately myopic thinking is evident in our government’s approach to climate change. Only kooks question whether climate change is real yet Canada

is becoming a global pariah thanks to our inaction in addressing its multigenerational impacts. As cohorts go, retirement-age Canadians have had things pretty good, but they take up a disproportionate amount of the discourse in politics. Both the sheer numbers of older Canadians and their propensity to vote translates into policies tailored to their needs — to the detriment of younger generations. It shows in statements like Oliver’s. Do young people fail to vote because there are no politicians who are interested in creating policies to address their needs? Or do politicians fail to create policies that will beneﬁt future generations because they know there are no votes there? We suspect the latter. Perhaps it’s time we started worrying less about our retirement and more about our legacy.

Talk of a third crossing grows old Well, that should be the nail in the cofﬁn. Maybe a whole carpenter’s apronful of nails. I speak of the prospects for a North ShoreYes vote in the transit plebiscite, somewhat pushed out of the public mind by fresher disasters. Still personally debating whether the imperfect proposed improvements outweigh the baggage of an ill-hatched, crassly hyped and geographically tilted plan, I’d guess that media revelations of a half-baked scheme to ban cars on the Lions Gate Bridge in 15 years did a large favour for the No vote on this side of the (still slightly oily?) water. Especially since this pact in 2000 among the really important powers — the province, City of Vancouver, ICBC and unpopular TransLink (be fair, no transit

NDP Opposition working hard to score points As the legislative session heads into the homestretch (after this week there are 16 sitting days remaining) it’s worth noting the NDP Opposition appears to have ﬁnally hit its stride. The psychological trauma of that brutal and unexpected election loss in 2013 seems to be ebbing. And the NDP caucus has been able to ﬁnd enough issues to land a few body blows on the B.C. Liberal government. The current controversy over the sale of Crown land is a good example of an Opposition party getting its teeth into something juicy and not letting go. A couple of years ago there was widespread skepticism that Finance Minister Mike de Jong would be able to deliver balanced budgets, given the shaky state of government revenues and the voracious appetite of the health-care system when it came to tax dollars. A key part of de Jong’s plan to balance the books was the sell-off of hundreds

View from the Ledge of millions of dollars of government-owned assets (mostly land).There was criticism, at the time, that this was no true way of balancing the budget and in any case, it was doubtful the sales targets could be reached. Well, de Jong delivered the goods. He successfully held the line on health-care spending, he was able to reach his goal of asset sales and he produced budgets with healthy surpluses. But the NDP, armed with some internal documents gained from freedom of information requests, have been able to

make a legitimate case that, in at least some instances, the government may have disposed of land at prices that were much too cheap. Earlier in this session, the New Democrats scored a home run when they exposed the newly created Auditor General for Local Government ofﬁce as a dysfunctional workplace run by someone who appeared to be in over her head. The resulting furor saw the auditor-general replaced, thus giving the NDP the proverbial “trophy” that all Opposition parties are constantly on the hunt for. There was irony, of course, in the fact that the New Democrats had originally opposed the creation of an ofﬁce that actually turned out to be political rewarding for them, but no matter. The NDP has also, for the most part, successfully steered clear of the kinds of issues that magnify potential rifts within the party.The debate over how much support there should be for the resource extraction industry versus how much support there should be for

environmental protective measures will one day play out, but it hasn’t (yet) emerged as an ugly, messy internal fight. To be sure, the NDP still faces enormous challenges ahead if it ever wants to get back into government. But for now, all it has to do is to concentrate on the immediate future, which is the legislature session itself. Being an effective Opposition party is a difficult and often thankless task. The Opposition has no real power — it can’t pass legislation, or determine what gets debated in the house and its position on various issues usually have little or no impact on what a government does. When I arrived at the B.C. legislature in the late 1980s, the NDP Opposition at the time feasted on the comic soap opera that was the provincial government. But it was easy to score political points because the government was so inept and so deeply conflicted internally. And it was much easier for the NDP to get the

public’s attention back then than it is now. For example, daily newspapers in the ’80s would publish a half dozen political stories a day (usually featuring the Opposition hammering the government) but the number these days is much lower.

Throw in the coming of the digital media age, combined with a public that appears to pay less and less attention to politics, and it’s easy to see how hard it is for an Opposition party to be See Opposition page 11

The District of West Vancouver has found an innovative way to preserve a large residential lot that contains a piece of the community’s history. The Toby House, built in 1962 by late local architect Ray L. Toby and considered a pioneering example of West Coast modernism, has been threatened by redevelopment in recent years. Located amongst mature cedars, rhododendrons

and weeping willows with a creek running through the property, the Toby abode blends into the natural environment — a hallmark of the West Coast style. The building’s roofline and clerestory give the glass-and-stucco exterior a light and floating look. Inside the home, an open layout concept features another design hallmark — exposed wood beams — as well as abundant natural daylight that streams in through large floor-toceiling windows, blurring the line between interior and exterior space.

Under current zoning bylaws, not including a basement option, the Toby House property could have legally accommodated a new 13,204-square-foot house, which would have been glaringly incompatible with the residential character of Queens Avenue. Instead, West Van has entered into a heritage revitalization agreement that supersedes the zoning of the property, preserves the Toby House and prevents a “monster house” from inhabiting the area. The project is being heralded a success by council members and heritage stakeholders alike. “This (Toby) house is going to be stunning in years to come,” said Coun. Bill Soprovich. And just keep going,” Reynolds told council during the Toby House public hearing. The new plan for the sweeping site — approved by council on April 13 — is to subdivide the property into two lots: the 17,000-square-foot eastern

portion will be retained for the three-storey Toby residence, while a 4,894square-foot inﬁll house will occupy a new western lot comprising close to 21,000 square feet. Queens Avenue resident John Novak, whose property borders the western edge of the Toby House site, was the lone opposition to the project at the public hearing. Novak said there are a number of issues relating to the proposal that he believes have not been thoroughly addressed — including his assumption that what the developer is receiving in relationship

to the community is disproportionate. “This sets a dangerous precedent in using the heritage revitalization process as another tool for speculative real estate development in our community,” said Novak. Coun. Craig Cameron, who is not convinced the project is going to generate a great economic windfall, said considering the alternative — a new humongous home built on the site — this plan actually protects the neighbours with tree retention and scale of development. He praised the architects’ work. “This project is really well designed and very sensitive and does the twin jobs of protecting

the heritage building and building something that does keep with the community and neighbourhood character,” said Cameron. Under the heritage agreement, Toby House will receive minor alterations to the interior room layouts, a rear addition and a new accessory building — for a total ﬂoor area measuring 4,373 square feet. The onus of preserving and maintaining the Toby House and surrounding pristine property is now on the new owners, Vlahos Holdings Ltd., who are not allowed to change the character of the heritage building and the site it sits on without approval of council.

Have you ever wondered about Richard Walton’s ﬁrst kiss? Or maybe you want details about the ﬁrst time Darrell Mussatto was betrayed? Well, here’s your chance to see both North Vancouver mayors’ awkward coming-of-age experiences acted out live in the intimate Presentation HouseTheatre setting. The mayors will be front and centre in an improv challenge called The Life Game — an entertaining exposé of one’s personal life — on April 29, as a fundraiser for PHT. Some of Canada’s top improv performers will re-enact key personal moments from the mayors’ lives, in a 90-minute event that promises to be

entertaining and full of surprises. “Secrets revealed” and “intimate details” is what the audience can expect, says the show’s co-artistic directorVeena Sood, who’s excited for what the evening holds. Picture a talk show setting, andWalton and Mussatto are the guests being interviewed.The highly personal questions range wildly: memories of schoolroom humiliation, when was your ﬁrst kiss and who was it with, a boss they hated, when were they betrayed, and what superhero would you be. “We ask much more penetrating questions,” promises Sood. “We don’t want outrage as much as we want the truth.We never say how did that make you feel.We want, tell us what happened.” As each intimate story from the mayors’ lives is extracted, an actor will do their best to recreate the experience. Props are involved, which may or may not include a bed. But don’t expect the actors to take any creative licence with the mayors’ memories. “We don’t ﬁctionalize it,” says Sood. “With this, in the middle of the scene, we might stall the scene for a second and ask, ‘Is it right?’ And then rewind and do it correctly.”

Mussatto andWalton will use a bell and a horn to signal to the actor if they are off-base or on-point with their account. There was no pleading to have the mayors participate, according to PHT theatre’s artistic director, Kim Selody, “Simple, I asked them and they said yes,” says Selody. “No, really.They are great sports and have always been strong supporters of this theatre.” The Life Game is very surprising, describes Selody, who says he is always amazed by the insight that can come from it, along with a few good laughs. Money raised from the event will mainly support children’s programming at PHT. “In particular, our young audience programming needs subsidy,” says Selody. “This fundraiser will enable many small children on the North Shore to see high quality professional theatre.” Sood is no stranger to the improv scene. She’s now a NorthVan resident, by way of Calgary where she met Keith Johnstone who is credited

Sood co-founded theatre sports league From page 13 with creating improv theatre in Canada. In the ’80s Sood visited Vancouver for Expo and wound up falling in love with the city. She later became part of a team of thespians that co-founded the famed Vancouver TheatreSports League. “Only in Vancouver does this happen that people refer to improv as theatre sports,”

laughs Sood. She explains how theatre sports is a misnomer, because it’s a small genre under the larger umbrella of improv. Sood has since become the co-artistic director, along with Jeff Gladstone, of Truth Be Told Theatre, which is presenting The Life Game at PHT. Celebrated Canadian athletes Wayne Gretzky and Bob Lenarduzzi have been

While Sood enjoyed seeing those staged biographies, she rather appreciates when everyday people are interviewed. “The Life Game is a show that reminds that all of us, however ordinary, that we all have quite an extraordinary life story to tell,” says Sood.

There tends to be a gap in the Canadian music industry timeline after the arrival of teen idol (and Ottawa native) Paul Anka and before the mainstream success of the likes of Joni Mitchell and NeilYoung at the tail end of the 1960s. But back when the Junos were the Gold Leaf Awards, and before the introduction of CanCon regulations,The Bells were touring from one end of the country to the other, and were the very first Canadian band to play the Copacabana in NewYork City, one of the top clubs in the world at that time. Toronto filmmaker Jessica Edwards doesn’t just want to remind audiences about an overlooked piece of Canadiana: in Stay Awhile she also wants you to get to know her parents, Cliff and Ann Edwards. Cliff “had a little grit to him,” according to band manager Kevin Hunter; South African-born sister act Ann and Jacki had an innocence onstage that was beguiling. “I couldn’t even look at the audience at first,” admits Jacki RalphJamieson. Hunter saw a winning formula and put

The group, including Gordie McLeod and Doug Gravelle, toured and played Bermuda for six months, Florida for three.They found success south of the border, but couldn’t crack a vast Canada. A promo film for the band commissioned by the record company, Follow The Fun, showedThe Bells touring across the U.S., having a blast in NewYork City. It was a charmed time. The film shifts focus at about the 50-55 minute mark, approximates Edwards. “Up until then it’s the band’s story,” the director says via phone from Toronto. After that point in the film “we reveal things to each other... marriages fail,

bands get together and break apart… every person has their own version.” At ﬁrst Clint had an eye for Jacki. But it’s Ann he married, in Christchurch Cathedral in Montreal, 1967. And soThe Bells’ tight family unit went the way of Fleetwood Mac and Abba, with a husband-and-wife team throwing things off balance. Peace song “Fly Little White Dove Fly” became a top-10 hit in Canada and then “Stay Awhile”, a pillowtalk duet between Cliff and a breathy Jacki, hit No. 1 in Canada and No. 7 in the U.S. on the BillboardTop 100.The group found true fame right around the time that Ann became a stay-athome mom, watching from

the sidelines asThe Bells performed on Merv Grifﬁn andTheTonight Show, two times each. Jacki became the sole female in the group.The new record cover made brotherand sister-in-law look like lovers, which didn’t sit well with Ann, now tending two kids — soon to be three — alone at home on their Ontario farm. Ultimately, Cliff left the band. He rejoined his family but was on the road a lot as a struggling solo artist. ATV show hosted by Cliff and Ann (and occasionally featuring the three kids) tided them over. “Every Christmas we’d have to go up on stage,” laughs Edwards. “We were like the Christmas vonTrapp family!”

One ﬁlm clip shows the Edwards family singing Kenny Rogers favourite “The Gambler,” with a toothy Jessica right in front. “I had totally blocked that out,” she laughs. “Who’s the idiot who put the mic in front of the youngest?” But it couldn’t last, and the couple separated after 19 years of marriage. Ann left, moved out west toVancouver, “more like a distant relative” to her children than a mother. People often close their eyes when they hear a song they like, but that doesn’t mean they don’t see anything. “Whenever you listen to music, you can usually visualize something. A song may remind you of a moment in time,” explains music industry veteran Simon Edwards. “Even when you close your eyes, you still probably create a picture or remember an image of something.” Today, Edwards makes a living translating the mind’s eye into visual reality. He and Deep Cove resident LeeAnne Evans founded an animation and stage production company called Visual Artform 18 months ago in North Vancouver, though they recently relocated their studio to New Westminster. “In basic terms, what we

do is we design audio-visual shows for a range of events,” Edwards explains. He recently returned from Indio, California where his company produced two shows for Norwegian DJ Kygo at the annual Coachella music and arts festival. In addition to live music performances, the company also does visual design for corporate functions, fashion shows — basically any event that calls for an audio-visual element. Edwards has been in the music industry for 20 years. He has worked as a music producer in the U.K. and a resident DJ in Ibiza, Spain — a party mecca for fans of electronic dance music. To date,Visual Artform has worked with the likes of Dutch EDM project Dash Berlin, American rock duo The Black Keys and British singer Estelle. Busy preparing for the summer festival circuit, the team has shows scheduled at the Paradiso Festival at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State, the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas and B.C.’s

When it comes to creating an “immersive environment” for live performances, Edwards says the ﬁrst step is to understand the music before diving into the graphics and animation. “There’s many people doing visuals at music concerts, but the visuals don’t really connect with the music or the songs,” Edwards says. “We really research the songs and the vibe.We listen to the lyrics and we really connect the visuals in a different way.” That often means working closely with the artists to gain a better insight into the mood of each song. Visual Artform does a

lot of “projection mapping,” which involves the use of large-scale projectors to cast images and video onto buildings and surfaces.They also employ video jockeys (veejays) to performs live visual shows “on the ﬂy” to accompany music. “It’s quite an intricate thing doing a live visual show. It’s not like just putting a DVD player on and pressing play,” Edwards says. “It’s quite intense to make sure you get it right and there’s obviously a lot of pressure that comes with that.” A few years ago, Edwards estimates it would have cost an artist upwards of $100,000 to use a giant LED screen as a stage backdrop.Today, he says,

it’s no more than $15,000. The drop in the price of technology has led many performers to ditch stage props, which can be cumbersome to move, in favour of graphics and animation. “We can do literally insane things with the animations. It’s such an eyecatching thing,” Edwards says. “That visual element not only enhances the show, but also the opportunity to ﬁlm and post on social media, so it’s becoming a huge marketing tool.” Marketing aside, Edwards says his core mission is to capture the essence of a piece of music and tell a story. “We actually bring the music to life through visuals,” he says.

Buffy Sainte-Marie finds the power

New songs typically pop into singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie’s head like dreams, often seeing words and music arrive simultaneously. “I’ll wake up in the middle of the night or I’ll be on an airplane and a song will pop into my head. Just whatever I happen to be doing, a song pops into my head the way an idea pops into your head. It’s partly craving, and it’s partly decorating, and it’s partly witnessing how you

feel about something that you didn’t know you felt that strong about,” she says. Some songs prove easily shapeable from there, for example, 1965’s “Until It’s Time for You to Go”; whereas others require serious dedication. “A song like ‘Universal Soldier,’ that’s like writing a thesis for a professor who hates you and you’re determined to get an A+ from the son of a bitch. I mean you’re just determined. So ‘Universal Soldier’ and ‘Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,’ some of those other songs that have a lot of social meaning, a lot of sometimes even political meaning, I work on ‘em real hard as opposed to a love song that just comes bubbling out of my heart,” she says. The iconic and proliﬁc 74-year-old Cree artist,

born in Saskatchewan and currently based in Hawaii, is awaiting the release of her 16th studio album, Power in the Blood, May 12. “If there’s a theme to it it’s the diversity of our lives if we allow it. The songs are very, very diverse,” she says. “Not the Lovin’ Kind,” expresses the sentiment, “Yeah you’re a jerk, but I’m not going to let you get to me,” she says. In contrast, the album’s title track, with its lyrics, “When that call it comes; I will say, no no no to war,” is intended as an antiwar song. “Almost all of them have a positive spin to them one way or another, even if it’s kind of deep. Even like ‘Power in the Blood.’ I mean at least somebody’s out there saying that. At least the song exists, even though it’s discussing GMO and fracking and other social issues of our time. Latest album recorded in Toronto From page 22 wrapped a two-week tour that took her to Australia, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, where she performed a string of arenas with Morrissey. This week she hit the road once again, embarking on a North American tour that brought her to Capilano University’s BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts last night. She’s set to take the North Vancouver stage again tonight for her second of two sold-out shows. Touring internationally, performing with top artists and playing to packed houses — the excitement, despite more than 50 years in the recording industry, has yet to wear off. “Musicians, mostly we’re playing for ourselves. It’s just a privilege that there’s an audience there at all,” she laughs. “If you’re a natural musician and you’ve loved music since you were a kid and you’ve been doing it the way

other people do sports, then you’re into it. It stays fun. Especially when the music’s good. I’ve been doing it for so long that I can pretty much pick and choose what I do on stage.” She performs songs from her catalogue audiences want to hear, classics like “Up Where We Belong,” tracks from recent records, and adds new songs all the time. Sainte-Marie has maintained a busy touring schedule since the release of Running for the Drum six years ago, so had a lot of material ready when True North Records approached her, wondering if she wanted to make a new album. To record Power in the Blood, her fourth studio release in 20 years, SainteMarie spent much of the last year going back and forth to Toronto. “I had the songs and I was eager to give them away and record them and get a little input from some other producers other than

myself. It was a wonderful experience recording. I love all three producers,” she says. Sainte-Marie coproduced her last few albums with Chris Birkett (Sinéad O’Connor, Bob Geldof) and so called on him once again. However, she also wanted to try working with some different producers this time around. She auditioned half a dozen before asking Michael Phillip Wojewoda (Barenaked Ladies, Rheostatics) and Jon Levine (Nelly Furtado, K’NAAN) to come on board. Sainte-Marie gave each her planned playlist, letting them choose which songs they wanted to work on. “That was the ticket, that was the key to it. So everybody was working on something they wanted to work on,” she says. While challenging, Sainte-Marie fully enjoys the recording process. “Until you have that mix of the song whereby

it sounds like it sounded in your head the ﬁrst time you ever heard it, up until then it’s like looking in a distortion mirror. When it crystallizes and it’s right, you know it immediately. You know that’s the way you want it,” she says. Power in the Blood’s title track is a cover of a song by UK band Alabama 3 and serves as the title track of their 2002 album. Sainte-Marie became a fan of the band as a result of their Song, “Woke Up This Morning,” being featured as the theme song of TV’s The Sopranos. “God, it’s a great song!” she says. She sought out their albums and was captivated by “Power in the Blood.” “It was the bloodiest damn thing you ever heard. I mean it was as violent: ‘(As I cut them) limb from limb’ and ‘When that call it comes, I will be ready for war,’” she says. Sainte-Marie met the band last year when she was performing in England. “I told them, ‘This would

make a great peace song’ and of course they laughed. But I modified the words and I think it is a great peace song. I really like it a lot,” she says. In addition to a number of new, all-original works, Power in the Blood also contains a contemporary version of “It’s My Way,” the title track of SainteMarie’s 1964 debut. “I’ve grown a lot since I first recorded it. But the song itself really, really still motivates everybody in the same way. . . . Sometimes you write one that’s a classic and it’s always going to make sense through any generation in any language. . . . It’s really about finding your own path whoever you are.You’re not trying to tell other people to come and be your follower or your fan.You’re pointing out that everybody has their own path and the joy of life is in discovering that,” she says. Sainte-Marie wears many hats — visual artist and philanthropist included. She’s operated

the Nihewan Foundation for Native American Education since 1969 and its Cradleboard Teaching Project serves children and teachers around the world for free. She’s also long been known for her social activism. “When I see a problem it just intrigues me and I just crave to get my brain around it and what can I do to make it better. To write a song like ‘Universal Soldier’ is one thing but it’s not enough for me. I mean I do love and appreciate songwriting as one way to make a contribution, to help people to put things into words in a way that makes sense but I also spend a lot of time just learning, just trying to ﬁnd out what’s going on. I guess I’m interested in issues, not all issues, but the ones that really move me, really do move me and I react not only as a songwriter but also as just a person living in communities,” she says.

Dear Westview: There are so many colours trending in shoes and handbags that I would recommend playing with colours in your ensemble and matching whatever you feel like matching. This includes your shoes with your top or your bag with your skirt. More or less colour with and without contrast is really your choice this season. There is a street graffiti look with many colours that is in fashion, which gives you an opportunity to express yourself without committing to one look. Shoes have made advances this season. There are new shoes in style. Flats are big, especially the ballerina flat. This style has been updated with a pointy toe and patent leather in many colours — from deep red to funky yellow. There are patterns featuring more than one colour that can be matched with your outfit for an ultimate fashion look or matched with a pair of jeans and a graphic T-shirt to achieve the street graffiti look. Mary Janes are flat with one or more trendy colours. There is a heel that is popular, if you prefer a shoe with a heel. It is chunky with a retro 1970s square shape. Buckles, straps and tassels can be found on more conservative shoes, giving them a modern look with less street influence. Sandals are always popular in spring. The trendiest sandal is called a flatform. It looks like a platform shoe except the sole is only an inch thick from the toe to the heel. It is a very cool looking shoe. It can be found in shiny solid black or multiple colours. More colours boost

the trendiness of the shoe. Gladiator sandals in metallic colours with flat heels or kitten heels are also popular. The emphasis is on the laces which embrace the top of the foot and the calf. This is a glamorous look. Elegant flat T-strap sandals are a nice option for a fashionable look that falls in the middle of the fashion road. The handbag is where you can pack the biggest trendsetting punch. The colours are bold in yellow, blue, orange, white, and gold — whatever you like. The idea is that your handbag makes a statement before you do. There are geometric colour block designs. Your bag does not have to be one colour. But, if you choose one colour, look for texture in the leather and details such as hardware and fringe. The handbag is not floppy; it is a structured bag. There is a large variety of styles in fashion, in all sizes, allowing for a personal touch. Clutches, totes, satchels, bucket bags and backpacks with leather handles and chain straps are all in fashion. One of the biggest trends in handbags is suede as a spring texture, usually in a light cognac colour. This is a higher end look. Another big trend is the vintage camera bag. Since many of us don’t carry a camera separate from our phone, this look is not about function. This look is about channelling the chic tourist. Spring is a great time of year to explore with colour.

Someday I will be able to look at the 5.0 badge on the side of a V-8 Mustang and not immediately start humming “Ice Ice Baby.” Someday. Not today though, obviously. All right stop, collaborate and listen, here’s the Mustang’s brand new edition: a ground-up redesign that includes the long awaited, fully independent rear suspension, a new style

based on Ford’s global design language, and that same old ﬁve-litre ability to wax a chump like a candle (you can also get the ‘Stang with a V-6 or a new turbo-four). Built continuously since 1964, the Mustang really has earned the right to be called an icon — perhaps an overused word these days, but accurate in this case. Like the Porsche 911, we’ve had more than a half-century of this basic shape and idea, and this latest reﬁnement has huge, multi-generational

expectations to live up to. I associate the Mustang with rolling in the Fivepoint-oh; others might think of T-Rex, or Chuck Berry, or Wilson Pickett’s Mustang Sally. It’s a part of our culture — so how does this new one do as a car?

fuel-saver, Mitsubishi was fielding a genuinely exciting little coupe. The Lancer GSR weighed a feathery 900 kilograms, and had a zippy little twincarb four-banger putting out 169 horsepower. Not bad by current standards, and when you consider that the contemporary Datsun 240Z was (a) heavier and (b) less powerful, that’s actually quite impressive. Mitsubishi fielded a racing-spec version of the car with Scot Andrew Cowan at the wheel, and it did very well. In the Southern Cross Rally, held in the Australian Outback, the GSR racked up five straight victories. That’s right, a flamboyant Scottish champion and the word “Outback” long before anyone had heard of Colin McRae or two-tone plastic body cladding. The Lancer would also be the vehicle of choice for Kenyan rally driver Joginder Singh. Singh, whose family would later have ties to B.C., first famously won the incredibly gruelling Safari Rally in a clappedout Volvo, and later campaigned two Mitsubishi entries to victory, in 1974 and 1977. Between these early roots and the first proper Lancer Evolution is a whole mish-mash of cars from the 2000EX turbo to a four-wheel drive version of the Starion. However, when it came time for the Lancer to step up to the plate, it came fully realized and ready to knock it out of the park. Meanwhile, in Canada, everyone was trundling around in Colts and cars rebadged as Dodges, and few thought of Mitsubishi as a performance brand. Sure, there was the Dodge Stealth and the Mitsubishi 3000GT, but these twinturbo machines were dark horses, and very heavy. Compared to emerging rivals like the 300ZX twinturbo and the Supra, they remain in the shadows even today. Probably the closest thing you could get to a Japanese Evo was something like the Eagle Talon. With available all-wheel drive and Mitsubishi’s 2.0-litre turbocharged 4G63T engine, the Talon was very quick out of the box and extremely tuneable. Many of them were turned into blazing fast tuner cars

— and many destroyed in the process. Meanwhile, fans of rally racing or of the Gran Turismo games for Playstation were ﬁnding out just why the Lancer Evolution was so popular in Japan. It wasn’t just the power and the grip: the Evo was outﬁtted with increasing amounts of technology, new ways to put down the power and battle the understeer normally inherent in an allwheel-drive car. Consider Mitsubishi’s Super-All-Wheel-Control with Active Yaw Control. Now, I know the Japanese marques love their convoluted names and alphabet soup acronyms, but this is some pretty slick kit. The S-AWC has the ability to shunt power around to the wheel with the best traction, and the AYC uses accelerometers and other sensors to monitor the angle of attack the car’s taking through a corner. Taken all together, it meant the Evo could unleash all 280 h.p. (at least — later models had their power levels underrated) through the corner, wheels scrabbling and scorching and destroying tires and pavement. It was utterly ferocious, and with a series of ice-blooded Finnish drivers at the wheel, it dominated the World Rally Championships. Tommi Makkinen, now driving for Subaru, was so successful that Mitsubishi made a special edition car wearing a version of his racing livery. In 2003, U.S. customers got the chance to buy an Evo, albeit a slightly watered-down version, but Canadians were left out in the cold until the current generation showed up in 2008. Everybody in North America missed out on the very rare and super-cool wagon version that was available for just 2,500 units in Japan only. However, when the Evo arrived on our shores it wasn’t cheap.You could get the car with stuff not offered on the STI — namely, a dual-clutch transmission on top models — but it was expensive, easily matching the 370Z and V-8 Mustangs in price point. enthusiasts’ driveways, and it maintained some much-needed street cred for the Mitsubishi brand. The company’s compact cars and crossover even aped the Evo’s aggressive grille, using their halo car to maximum effect.

And now it’s gone. We’re in a golden age of cars for the enthusiast, and with an all-wheel-drive version of the Focus RS coming soon and the Golf R more powerful than ever, perhaps we don’t really need the Evo any more. Even if Mitsubishi spent the R&D dollars, would

wheel right where you’re supposed to put your hands at 9-and-3. It came with an Alcantara wheel, but if you were driving it properly on a track, you didn’t get any beneﬁt from it. Here though, there’s leather all around the wheel. The plasticky bits look less plasticky. There’s less tacky chrome trim. The gauges are easier to read. The infotainment system is a little better, though there’s still a bit of a learning curve here. My tester came pretty heavily loaded with the Recaro seats and Shaker audio system, the former to keep you gripped and the latter to kick out the jams. Heck, even the trunk’s not too bad in this thing, although those who ﬁnd the cockpit a little claustrophobic will want to opt for the glass roof.

Performance I can’t believe you’re going to be able to just waltz into a dealership and buy one of these things without taking an advanced driving course. It’s a frickin’ rocket ship. Under the hood is a 5.0-litre V-8 — Ford dubs this the Coyote — that makes 435 horsepower

and 400 foot-pounds of torque. To understand how nutty this is, maybe a time machine is in order? Let’s say you travelled back in time to the year 2000 and decided to drop $300,000 on a Ferrari Maranello: V-12, frontengined, 478 h.p. Now you can get basically the same amount in a Mustang (and if the aftermarket can’t ﬁnd another 50 ponies in this thing, then my name’s Mr. Ed). The Ecoboost cars are great, a new generation of tuner car for a new generation of Mustang owners. The V-8 feels like a greatest hits album Ford’s playing for the fans. It goes RAARRRRtail-waggle-skipskipskipseeyalaterstoplight-GONE! I’ve driven faster cars, but the Mustang does a really good job of both being fast and feeling fast. There’s theatre in this car, sticking its nose in the air and galloping down an onramp like there’s a burr under its saddle. This one’s got the optional performance package, which comes with uprated Brembo brakes that remain fade free even after a long and hilly descent. The big news everyone’s talking about is the

new independent rear suspension, and the way it tames the Mustang’s behaviour on bumpy roads. It’s certainly more composed over the rough stuff, but “tamed” is the wrong phrase. This thing’s both rootin’ and tootin’, and born to run. Features Fitted with a stick shift and as little equipment as possible, the new Mustang makes for a great track car (particularly if the track’s an open, high-speed affair). Cram it with amenities and it becomes more of a muscular grand tourer.You can toggle the Mustang’s behaviour with some aircraft-style switches at the bottom of the centre stack: Normal, Sport, Track, and Snow. Ford’s navigation and infotainment system is still not as intuitive to use right off the bat, but a few days spent learning the voice commands and shortcuts reveals it to be a pretty powerful control

centre. The Shaker stereo, as mentioned, has plenty of punch, although if you’ve sprung for the V-8, maybe you just want to drop the windows instead. Even more handy for long-distance cruising was the adaptive cruise control, paired with forward collision warning. When purring along the Coquihalla on the run back from Vernon, it came in handy every time we came up on a pair of slowmoving trucks passing each other. Base price on the GT is a little more than $42,000, but this welloptioned version was close to $56K after freight. Fuel economy (uh-oh) is rated at 15.2 litres/100 kilometres in the city and 9.2 l/100 km on the highway (hey, not too bad). Comparing the Camaro to the Mustang head-tohead is a half-centurylong tradition. However, with the new Camaro just around the corner and the Mustang in its newest form, it’s maybe not a fair fight to pit these two pony cars against each other. The Mustang feels fresher, because it is. But that doesn’t mean the Camaro isn’t capable of putting up a fight, even if it’s a little older. The exterior and interior don’t quite measure up, but the powertrain does — that mighty 6.2-litre V-8 makes 426 h.p. and 420 footpounds of torque, enough to line up with confidence next to a 5.0-litre Mustang at the dragstrip.
