As the fall season arrives and our parks fill with cooler breezes, vibrant colors and renewed community energy, I am excited and honored to share my first program guide with you as the new Director of Parks and Recreation. This season represents a time of transition, reflection, and new beginnings, both in nature and within our department.
Our team has curated a wide range of programs designed to inspire wellness, creativity, exploration, and togetherness for residents of all ages. Whether you’re joining a fitness class, exploring one of our parks, participating in youth activities, or connecting with neighbors at a community event, we hope you find opportunities that enrich your daily life and strengthen your sense of belonging.
I look forward to building on our department’s strong foundation and working alongside our dedicated staff, partners and community members to enhance the services and spaces that make Norfolk such a vibrant place to live, work and play.

REGISTRATION POLICIES
• Full payment must be made at the time of registration.
• Courses are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
• Payment is accepted by VISA/MasterCard, check, or money order made payable to Norfolk City Treasurer. Current photo I.D. required.
• Registration may be accepted up to 7 days after class start date, if space is available.
• A $5 late fee applies to registration 7 days or less prior to class start date.
• If a student misses a class, Norfolk Parks and Recreation will try to accommodate a make-up session; no make-up classes are guaranteed.
• Class sessions may occasionally be canceled due to unexpected circumstances. Every attempt will be made to contact participants and to schedule a make-up session for the class. Ensure contact information is current with instructor.

Norfolk’s Facility Use I.D. Card gives you year-round access to all of Norfolk’s community/recreation centers, pools, and athletics programming. The Facility Use I.D. Card must be presented upon entering a facility. Facility Use I.D. Cards are not required for registration and attendance of fee-based classes.

Facility Use I.D. Cards are valid for one year of the purchase date and must be renewed in person. Memberships can be purchased at any recreation/community or pool facility. Norfolk residents are required to bring a valid ID and proof of Norfolk residency (i.e., utility bill). For youth membership, please provide an original birth certificate.
A PowerUp membership rate is available through the Department of Human Services to individuals and families who qualify for Medicaid. To find out if you qualify, check the Virginia Department of Social Services or call the Norfolk Department of Human Services at (757) 664-6000.
Pay by check or money order made out to Norfolk City Treasurer. Credit and debit cards with a Visa or MasterCard logo are accepted. Cash will be accepted per transaction (up to $10).
Norfolk’s Department of Parks and Recreation has a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD) machine. This machine allows us to communicate more effectively with our hearing-impaired participants. ROOM OPTIONS AND PRICING:
• Community Room A (Large Room): $50 per hour, capacity of approximately 65 people.
• Community Room B (Small Room): $25 per hour, capacity of approximately 30 people.
• Both Rooms (A & B): $75 per hour, capacity of approximately 95 people.
• If you are a non-resident of Norfolk, an additional fee of $25 per hour will apply to the rental.
Additionally, the rental fees are subject to a non-refundable application fee of $25 and there is a damage deposit of $50 required on the day of the event. The damage deposit will be refunded if no damage occurs after the event.
PRE-SCHOOL AQUATICS
Ages 4-5 • $30 - $45
PRE-SCHOOL AQUATICS 1: Participants are introduced to swimming and water safety skills that are developmentally appropriate for young children. Preschool Aquatics puts the “fun” in fundamentals. Each class is loaded with enjoyable, engaging and challenging activities that motivate children to want to perform and learn to swim.
PRE-SCHOOL AQUATICS 2: This level continues laying the foundation for developing water competency and further skill development. Preschool Aquatics Level 2 marks the beginning of independent aquatic locomotion skills. Children continue to explore using simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to gain greater proficiency in preparation for performing strokes.
PRE-SCHOOL AQUATICS 3: Preschool Aquatics Level 3 builds on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2. Participants perform basic aquatic skills with greater proficiency, for longer distances and times. In addition, previously acquired water safety knowledge and skills are reinforced and expanded upon.
The AMERICAN RED CROSS SWIM PROGRAM guides children through a progressive series of water-safety and swimming-skill levels. From building basic comfort in the water to mastering all major strokes, each level strengthens confidence, technique and safety awareness.

LEVEL 1: INTRO TO WATER SKILLS
Participants are introduced to basic skills as the foundation for the development of water competency.
LEVEL 2: FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC SKILLS
Participants begins gaining rudimentary propulsive skills on both the front and the back. This level marks the beginning of independent aquatic locomotion skills.
LEVEL 3: STROKE DEVELOPMENT
Participants learn to swim the front crawl and elementary backstroke, is introduced to the scissors and dolphin kicks, learns the survival float, treading water and headfirst entries.
LEVEL 4: STROKE IMPROVEMENT
Participants are introduced to new swimming and water safety skills and to build on previously learned skills, improving the swimming stroke proficiency and swimming for longer distances.
LEVEL 5: STROKE REFINEMENT
Refines all six swimming strokes, introduces new water safety skills, and practices flip turns on front and back. Emphasis is on increasing distance and improving form.

AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARD TRAINING

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training class prepares participants with the skills needed to keep swimmers safe. The course covers essential water rescue techniques, CPR, AED use and first aid, with hands-on, scenario-based training led by experienced instructors.

The City of Norfolk’s Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking knowledgeable full-time and part-time Lifeguards to ensure a safe swimming environment for patrons at assigned swimming pools and open-water facilities. Other duties may include instructing swimming lessons and water fitness classes; assisting with the planning, implementation and evaluation of aquatic programs; planning daily activities of the pool and general swimming pool operations.

Division games will be initially scheduled on designated weeknights with possible make-ups being scheduled on various days based on facilities availability and discretion of the Norfolk Athletics Office.

Boot Camp is a fun and innovative way to lose fat and build muscle. Both men and women will find Boot Camp to be a team-oriented challenge with empowering results. Run, jump, push, and pull your way to a better body!
DEEP STRETCH

This class will teach fundamentals for stretching. Small and large muscle groups of the body are engaged to increase flexibility by using breathing to relax and stretch muscles.

BEACH WORKOUT AT THE BAY

To celebrate American Heart Month, participants will complete cardio miles on the treadmill, elliptical and/or the bike for the highest score. Treadmill is 3 points per mile. Elliptical is 2 points per mile. Bike is 1 point per mile. Small prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

Step into the studio, pick up a brush, or learn a new rhythm, our offerings are designed to inspire and challenge learners of every age. With dance, music and visual arts opportunities ranging from beginner to advanced, there’s a creative path waiting just for you.
Classes are held at welcoming community locations across the city including Lakewood Dance & Music Center, TitusTown Visual Arts Center, Lambert’s Point Community Center and Norview Community Center.

SUMMER CULTURAL ARTS CAMP

Students will take a week of a variety of dance classes, explore music and participate in visual arts sessions. Additional activities include games and excursions. Students should wear comfortable clothing and bring a bagged lunch and water each day. The program will conclude with an informal presentation Friday at 4:45 p.m. A daily schedule, including drop-off and pickup details, will be sent to each participant.

YOUTH BEGINNING BALLET

Barre work, basic ballet skills, attention to posture, stretching. An introductory class recommended for any students new to ballet and for returning students with less than two years of ballet experience. The daytime section is perfect for homeschool students looking to stay active and creative while integrating the art of ballet into their learning experience.
PIANO LEVEL I: PIANO FOR BEGINNERS
Ages 7 - 99 • $50 - $75
This beginner-friendly class is perfect for new pianists with little to no experience. Students will learn the basics of piano technique, note reading, rhythm, and simple songs in a supportive, hands-on environment. Through fun exercises and creative activities, you’ll build confidence at the keyboard while developing a strong musical foundation. Lesson materials cost approximately $25. A list of required materials is provided by instructor at first class.
ADULT CREATIVE CLASS SAMPLER
Ages 7 - 99 • $125 - $188
With guided instruction learn the brief foundations of the following mediums in this 10-week course: Drawing, Watercolor, Acrylic, Ceramic, Beading, Printmaking and Mixed-Media. For those looking to explore the variety of mediums offered through the Visual Arts program without the major commitment to one.
Ages 18+ • $35-$53
Our Open Studio sessions offer adults the freedom to explore a variety of creative disciplines in a relaxed, self-guided environment. Whether you’re interested in mosaics, stained glass, sumi-e, sewing and quilting, pottery, clay handbuilding, or painting, each session provides dedicated studio time, space, and community for independent artistic work.
Participants can enjoy mosaic making, create original stained glass pieces, or practice the expressive art of Japanese ink painting. Those with sewing or quilting experience may bring their own machines to work on personal projects. Pottery and clay handbuilding sessions allow makers to use studio equipment and glazes, with a limit of two finished pieces per week. Painters with prior experience may work independently and are asked to bring their own easel.
Across all studios, the focus is on creativity, independence and the joy of making within a supportive, open environment.

Put on your costumes and join us for fun games, activities, music, and lots of treats. 3 ON 3 TURKEY SHOOT CHALLENGE
Ages 8 - 9,10 - 11and 12 - 14 • Free
Come compete in our free fun fast-paced Turkey Shoot 3 on 3 youth basketball Challenge Each game lasts for 10 minutes or until a team scores 21 points. The winners of each age group receive a trophy and Turkey. All players will receive a participant tee shirt.
