What is a Carboxylic Acid? Carboxylic acids are organic compounds that contain a special functional group called the carboxyl group (βCOOH). This group is made up of a carbonyl group (C=O) and a hydroxyl group (βOH). Because of this structure, carboxylic acids behave as weak acids and can donate hydrogen ions in chemical reactions. They are widely found in nature and play an important role in everyday life.

Carboxylic acids usually have a sour taste and a strong odor. They have higher boiling points than many other organic compounds due to hydrogen bonding between molecules.
