The Student Struggle:

The Impact of Inflation on Students

As a complex economic phenomenon, inflation reverberates nearly every facet of our daily lives The relentless rise in the cost of goods has resonated most seriously among students who bear the brunt of this economic strain

Inflation represents the pace at which the costs of goods and services increase In times of elevated inflation, students contend with increased expenses for essential items such as food, transportation, and academic materials

The continuing surge of price hikes presents a formidable problem for the affordability of education as costs continue to escalate beyond the reach of many In fact, numerous students from families with the means to pursue education in private higher education institutions opt for and benefit from the advantages provided by local colleges and universities It is imperative, then, that we acknowledge the significant impact of inflation on the dreams, aspirations, and potential of our students

The price increase has effectively immobilized students, stripping them of opportunities to enhance their circumstances Students face significant challenges in managing their weekly allowances Access to nutritious meals remains a considerable impediment for many, as financial constraints hinder their ability to make healthier choices Many students work part-time to alleviate the financial pressures their parents face, forcing them to juggle their time both in studies and work Acknowledging the impacts of inflation on students may be uncomfortable, yet it is undeniably evident that many of us grapple with the torment of making ends meet Recognizing that the considerations extend beyond merely addressing the students' basic needs is crucial Additionally, various financial obligations are associated with course requirements, including project expenses, printing fees, instructional materials for education students, and books necessary for field studies In our society, the inescapable truth remains that all endeavors and possessions ultimately hinge upon financial resources, regardless of our attempts to refute this reality

Nevertheless, it is essential to acknowledge that, as students, we find ourselves in a fortunate position, particularly allowed to pursue our studies within the framework of the free higher education provided by our institution Let us allow our financial distress to catalyze motivation, driving us to endure and ultimately triumph in life, regardless of our obstacles While price increases may rattle our resolve, they will not deter our progress These represent merely one of the numerous drawbacks that lie ahead of us It might be hard to accept, but it is a fundamental truth that success in life is often accompanied by the necessity of sacrifice

AWhisperin theShadows

I’ve been hearing those words for a year now It’s a haunting refrain that echoes in the quiet corners of my mind, a gentle plea for release Today, as I sit across from her, I recognize that I am both the watcher and the watched two parts of a fractured self

Her small, dark eyes mirror the weight of weariness, and when she turns away, my chest tightens with an ache I know too well “Can you stay hantod ugma?” I respond, my voice a soft tether, anchoring her to this moment This dialogue is our secret ritual, a fragile lifeline in a world that feels too heavy I understand her longing for escape; I see the walls she’s built, fortified with silence and shadows Yet, a part of me clings to hope, yearning to pull her back from the edge

The sun bathes us in warm light, yet it does little to melt the chill between us We sit surrounded by passersby, a parade of familiar faces Someone waves, and she responds with a bright smile a flash of connection that is both beautiful and painful She knows many, yet so few dare to linger by her side In this moment, I realize how loneliness weaves itself into our lives Even in a crowd, she feels invisible, adrift in her own existence I long to remind her of her worth, of the joy that connection can bring But her silence looms large, and I can’t breach the fortress of her heart

I finally ask, my voice barely a whisper

She looks at me then, and for a brief second, I see the flicker of a soul yearning for understanding “Because it hurts too much to stay,” she replies, her voice trembling like the last leaves of autumn clinging to the branches

I feel that ache, a mirror to my own struggles There are days when the weight of existence feels unbearable But I have learned that in those moments, it’s vital to reach out to speak up, to share our burdens It’s what I wanted us to do: to break the silence, to acknowledge the struggle, and to remind each other that we are not alone

As she looks away again, I reach out and gently touch her hand “Mamalhin ta ug puwesto Didto ta sa landong Kung sundan ta sa init, mangita na sad ta ug landong na lugar Kung mag-ulan ug wala kay payong, magpasilong ta You don’t need to stay here every day You can always choose your place ”

We walk hand in hand into the golden light of the afternoon, finding our shade The world continues to spin around us, but we ’ ve created a space where vulnerability can exist, where hope can seep through the cracks of despair

“Let’s take it one day at a time,” I say softly, echoing my own need for reassurance

She nods, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly I know we have a long way to go, that tomorrow may be a sunny day that will hurt our skin, or rain that will make us wet But today, we have chosen a place where I can shade myself from pain and protect myself when it rains

In this fleeting moment, I hold onto the belief that the simple act of staying of choosing to be present can illuminate the path for those who feel lost And as September unfolds, I carry that hope with me, a silent promise to myself: I will keep talking, keep connecting, and keep fighting against the shadows that threaten to engulf me

In the end, it’s my own whispers that create the light “Nganong gusto naka mulakaw?”
