örg Hauchler was born on 19 December, 1956 in Altena, Germany. At an early age he became interested in history, geography and speleology, especially that of the Southwest Indian Ocean region. Later this led him to take part in many scientific expeditions throughout Madagascar with his Australian friends, Owen Griffiths, and Greg Middleton. He developed a passion for Madagascar, Reunion and the Seychelles. However, he came to especially love Mauritius where after he was married, he chose to live. A history buff and an informed collector, recognized by the international community and often referenced in numismatic works, Jörg specialized in the South-West Indian Ocean in the assiduous collection of coins, medals, tokens, and

other related objects. His preferred themes were slavery, French colonies, Malagasy Railways and Royalty in the Great Island. Jörg loved to sit with friends, preferably over a glass of nice red and discuss his latest finds. He excelled at following leads – stories in local newspapers or simply visiting old shop keepers and in so doing successfully tracked down the most amazing items including sugar estate tokens. Visiting rural markets in remote areas of Madagascar also yielded many treasures. He will be remembered as a man of great rigour and exemplary uprightness. However, he was a big dreamer too. Toned with strong underlying lustre, good extremely ne and extremely rare [Graded by NGC as MS 63] £600-£800 In 1886, the Hova Government in Madagascar reached an agreement with the Birmingham based !rm Kingdon to produce 50,000 silver piastres for circulation. However, the deal fell through after the French colonial representative Le Myre de Vilers gave the contract to Monnaie de Paris. Two designs were made in 1886 and 1888 by the renound Ramanan-Kirahina, a Madagascan artist and chief designer to Queen Ranavalona III. The coins were ultimately never struck due to lack of treasury funds, with only a dozen known survivors of either design recorded. A true numismatic rarity in every regard.

209 Voyages of the Corvette Astrolabe, 1826, a copper medal by A.J. Depaulis for de Puymaurin, bare head of Charles X left, rev. inscription in ten lines, 50mm (MH. 190). Toned with reective surfaces, about extremely ne £100-£120 The corvette L'Astrolabe commanded by Dumont D'Urville sailed from Toulon on April 25th to explore the South Seas. During this voyage they discovered in 1828 the remains of La Perouse’s tragic expedition which has been lost on the Vemi l'Oro Reef, New Hebrides, in 1788, forty years earlier. The expedition stopped in Mauritius in November 1828. Due to illness among the crew, 14 members, including the ship’s physician JosephPaul Gaimard, were left behind to recover.

Bazor, standing !gure of Marianne paying homage to a seated !gure of Liberty, rev. tree of Liberty rising from radiant sun, edge engraved M. LE PRÉSIDENT LÉON BLUM, 68mm, 155.51g (cf. CGMP p.113; cf. Silich 27 [bronze]). Extremely ne, extremely rare £120-£150 Léon Blum was a French socialist politician and three-time Prime Minister of France between 1936 and 1947. After his premiership, he became a strong advocate for a united Europe, and continued to campaign for various social causes until his death in 1950. Slavery, !rst abolished on 4 February 1794, was restored throughout the majority of the French empire in 1802. On 27 April 1848 the !nal abolition of slavery in the French colonies was proclaimed.

In the immediate aftermath of the raid, and before she could leave the area, the Australian ship HMAS Sydney engaged her in a quick action. Overwhelmed, the Emden was badly damaged and forced to run itself aground to avoid sinking.

Extremely ne, rare [Graded by NGC as MS 62] £120-£150 The English sailing ship Randolph sank on a reef just oﬀ the coast of Mauritius, carrying a cargo of sugar, money and about 250 Indian workers bound for Port Louis. The harbour master of Port Louis, Lieutenant Edward Kelly, along with a few others, managed to rescue the majority of people onboard. This award recognised his brave eﬀorts.

The Extremely Important Strathmore Rescue gold Medal x

283 Rescue of the Strathmore, 1876, a gold medal for Life Saving, presented to Chief Officer F.C. Swain, issued by the inhabitants of Mauritius, shield of arms rev. inscription in thirteen lines (For Heroic Conduct of the Captain, Officers, and Crew of the American Barque Young Phoenix in the Rescue of the Survivors from the Ship Strathmore, Wrecked on the Crozet Islands 1875), 43mm, 61.68g. Small edge knock, otherwise lightly toned with a satin nish, good extremely ne and of the highest rarity; accompanied by original presentation case [Graded by NGC as MS 63] £4,000-£5,000 Provenance: Spink Auction (New York), 24-5 September 2015, lot 271. The sailing ship Strathmore left Gravesend on 19 April 1875 for New Zealand carrying 51 passengers, 38 crew and a cargo of railway iron and gunpowder. On July 1 the ship sailed into thick fog in the South Indian Ocean and was wrecked on the Crozet Islands. Captain Macdonald and the !rst officer were washed overboard, but the second officer and crew managed to launch two lifeboats, with survivors taken ashore onto one of the islands. They remained there for seven months until rescued by Captain D. L. Gifford of the American whaler Young Phoenix on 21 January 1876. Twenty of the survivors were transferred to the Sierra Morena and landed in Ceylon, while Captain Gifford took the rest to Mauritius. A small run of silver and bronze medals were issued to the crew members of the Phoenix. This particular example in gold, however, is the only known of it’s type, having come up for private sale just once in the last !fty years.

Madagascan Stamp Money from the Hauchler Collection Madagascar

350 Third Republic, Cardboard 10 Centimes [Ilavaomena], undated, (1916) issue (withdrawn 1922), Dog (Lec. 46; BNB B006; Pick 10; CNG 123, 886). Extremely ne for issue, very rare thus £200-£260 These pieces were produced in response to a severe shortage of metal during the First World War. Authorised 12 September 1916, the currency was made from stamp equipment of the period, struck exclusively on cardboard. There are two main groups, named according to design, with several varieties within each. They are vola alika (Malagasy: dog money) and volan' omby (Malagasy: zebu money). Unsurprisingly they are all rare, especially in the excellent condition of those oﬀered here. Owing to the speed that the pieces became damaged in circulation, a yellow varnish was introduced to try to fortify them (see lots 893–6). This saw little success.
