When we mailed the first issue of this magazine, I hoped it would find a place on coffee tables rather than recycling bins. I never imagined the thoughtful notes, kind emails, and conversations that would follow. Hearing that so many of you lingered over its pages, found inspiration in the homes we shared, or simply enjoyed taking a quiet moment with it has meant more to me than I can say. Thank you for welcoming us into your homes. Summer has always been one of my favorite seasons to decorate. There’s something about the longer days, fresh flowers, open windows, and vibrant color that encourages us to lighten things up and have a little more fun. In this issue, you’ll find homes filled with cheerful patterns, playful details, and spaces that celebrate the joy of living beautifully every day. As always, our style remains rooted in timeless design with a fresh perspective. We believe classic architecture can happily coexist with bold color, unexpected patterns, and collected pieces that make a home uniquely yours. Throw pillows may be one of the easiest ways to transform a room, but don’t underestimate their impact. A fresh mix of color, pattern, and texture can instantly change the mood of a space, adding personality, warmth, and just the right amount of polish. They’re also one of our favorite ways to welcome a new season, whether it’s crisp linens in the spring, rich velvets in the fall, or playful prints that simply make you smile. So don’t be afraid to mix patterns, play with color, and swap things out from time to time. It’s also place where you can splurge on an iconic fabric because you don’t need much to make a pillow. Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest statement.

Cali Hobgood is an award-winning, widely collected artist and is represented in public and private collections, galleries and museums around the country. Cali’s images are hand-colored black and white photographs, which she prints in a silver-process darkroom and then paints with oils. Her techniques in shooting film and hand-coloring the photograph, combined with her high-contrast printing style, produce gorgeous tones and textures in ideal union with her compelling subject matter. Between the variability of printing the negative individually and then hand-coloring the photograph, each piece in an edition is unique. The signed and numbered images are produced in editions from five to two-hundred fifty. Both framed and unframed pieces are available for sale.

uilt as a forever home for a young family, this extraordinary lakeside retreat is as deeply personal as it is undeniably striking. Every room tells a story, from the custom monogram adorning the library ceiling to framed lyrics from the homeowners’ favorite artist—meaningful details that transform beautiful spaces into lasting memories. Nestled at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in one of Kansas City’s most coveted neighborhoods, the home overlooks a serene lake and was designed with entertaining at its heart. Outside, a resort-worthy backyard features a pool, hot tub, fire pit, covered patio, and a screened lanai with panoramic water views, complete with a built-in outdoor kitchen and pizza oven. The entertainment continues indoors, where an expansive bar flows seamlessly into a golf simulator, while an adjacent half basketball court keeps the fun going year-round. For the family’s daughters, a dedicated dance studio—finished with mirrored walls and sparkling disco balls—creates the perfect place to perform. Even the space beneath the stairs has been transformed into a whimsical hideaway, complete with an arched door and enchanting wallpaper. Practicality is just as thoughtfully considered. A hardworking mudroom, outfitted with custom lockers, a farmhouse sink, water dispenser, and brass-inlaid monogram tile, keeps busy family life beautifully organized. Every detail was designed with intention, creating a home that is equal parts dramatic, welcoming, and unforgettable.

The large kitchen was built to be a true workhorse, but we also wanted it to be beautiful and have a lived-in feel. The natural stone around the range and lantern sconces gave the space the worn-in feel we desired. You also can never go wrong when you use lots of real marble! The scullery is just a peek off the kitchen. The dark green cabinetry made the framed view really show from the kitchen. This space is also packed with function — from a working library ladder and built-in air fryer to countertop appliances hiding behind a mirrored door.

The primary bedroom has a spectacular view of the property. We made it cozy by grounding the ceiling in black. The automated drapes make it easy to open them up and enjoy the view, or close them for privacy and sleeping. OPPOSITE: The powder room started with a quirky wallpaper that perfectly reflects the fun side of our clients. The design around the window was meticulously planned, with thoughtful cabinetry and mirror work.

The lower level bar is built for entertaining. It wraps around to the golf simulator and half basketball court. The red was a great contrast to the green and tied in our vintage arrow light installed above the pool table.

or these homeowners, moving was never the goal. They loved their established neighborhood and the memories their home already held, but with three growing children, the house no longer reflected the way their family lived. Rather than start over, they chose to thoughtfully re-imagine every space, transforming an older home into one that feels effortlessly modern while preserving its warmth and character. Every detail of the renovation was carefully considered, with the design evolving through a collaborative process of refining and tailoring each decision to the family’s lifestyle. Then, in a true leap of faith, the homeowners embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime family sabbatical, traveling the world while the renovation unfolded in their absence. Their willingness to hand over the keys spoke volumes about the trust they placed in the design team. When they returned home, they were greeted with more than a beautifully remodeled house— they discovered a home that felt both fresh and familiar. Layered with collected details, rich textures, and timeless finishes, the finished spaces capture the family’s eclectic style and adventurous, well-traveled perspective.

Many of you who know me know I am riding a high right now. My fiancé and I are building a home together! While I love my current home in Brookside, planning this new build with Troy has been such a fun experience. He’s involved — but not too much. A designer’s dream! He is wonderfully supportive as we create our forever home together. I’m bringing a little piece of my Brookside colonial to Loch Lloyd, and Starr Homes is bringing it all to life.
