CATCHING FIRE

SPRING 2026

MAR 27, 2026

Term 2 Highlights

With 9 House Competitions taking place this term, our Mulchatians had a wide range of opportunities to participate and represent our House. Our collaborative effort and continued passion shined through in many events!

The coming of spring heralds the coming of change! In this issue, we say our thank yous and goodbyes to our Year 11 Mulchatians.

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF HOUSE

This issue of “Catching Fire” is dedicated to our Year 11 Mulchatians. Many have been a part of Mulchat House since Year 7, and it is with both reluctance and excitement that we prepare to bid them farewell as they move on to new adventures in Sixth Form. In recent weeks, as Ms. Bate and I have been interviewing Year 10 students for next year’s leadership team, I have been reflecting on what makes a great leader. I believe that leadership is not defined by a title, but by the willingness to step forward when it matters. Each of our Year 11 Mulchatians has done just that, showing courage, passion and genuine commitment to the House. They have helped shape Mulchat into a place of warmth, friendship and belonging. I hope Mulchat, in turn, has helped shape you through the many experiences and lessons you embraced along the way. We will miss you.

MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT HEAD OF HOUSE

MS ALICE BATE

Term 2 has been a busy and memorable one, filled with fantastic House Competition moments and brilliant student-led activities. Wellbeing Wednesdays brought students together through creative events led by Jade, Rebecca, and the Year 11 team, including an especially memorable multi-game challenge. Andy’s Quiz Bowl also tested students and teachers alike with brilliantly challenging questions. I also want to recognise our House Values Champions: Terry, our Responsibility Champion, represented Mulchat across seven competitions with dedication and courage, whilst Ricky, our Character Champion, has consistently shown quiet reliability, teamwork, and care for others. From winter days to the arrival of spring blossoms, it has been a wonderful term!

MESSAGE FROM HOUSE CAPTAIN

Term 2 has been a period of great changes for both me and Mulchat. Song has left us, leaving me the only house captain. Despite this heartbreaking farewell, Mulchat saw great progress regarding house competitions and house spirit. We have, once again, dominated the House Ensemble, making us the reigning champions for over 5 consecutive years. As someone who has participated in the Ensemble ever since I joined the school, this is more than a simple win, but is a great conclusion that highlights the end of my story as a Mulchatian.

Now it has become the time to say farewell to the year 11s moving on to the next chapter of their journey, including myself. To lead this house was one of the most valuable experiences of my life, and taught me numerous lessons. Though it is sad that I will not be in the house anymore, I see hope in the younger students, developing their talents and achieving results Mulchat has not seen before. I truly believe that the new leaders will pass down the legacy, continuing the ‘golden era’ of Mulchat. (I hope Mulchat dominates sports one day…)

GOODBYE MESSAGES FROM YEAR 11 LEADERSHIP

Serena Eun (Arts Captain)

Since joining Mulchat in Year 7, I have seen us grow from consistently placing last to becoming a house capable of victory. At first, I honestly thought Mulchat would never win, but through everyone’s commitment, from the smallest competitions to major events like house singing and commercial dance, we proved that we could. Thank you all for making my time in Mulchat such a meaningful and unforgettable experience. Good luck to everyone in the future!

Jooha Lim (Arts Captain)

I still cannot believe my time as a Mulchatian is coming to an end. Since Year 7, I have connected, lived, and loved so many moments as a Mulchatian, and I am still very proud to be one. One of the key happiness of being a Mulchatian was the support I received. Whether it came from my peers, younger year groups, or older year groups, over the past four years Mulchat has offered me great support and valued me for who I am. I hope this legacy continues and makes Mulchat as a community full of support and love.

Eunbie Koh (Arts Captain)

I would like to sincerely thank you for the best journey as a Mulchatian since Year 7. I have made so many unforgettable memories, including winning House Ensemble five years in a row, and successfully achieving first place for House Singing. Also, I would especially like to wish Year 10 Mulchatians the very best of luck, as they would be leading the Mulchat House next year. I will miss Mulchat, and wish all Mulchatians the very best of luck for the future.

Jade Koh (Wellbeing Captain)

Rebecca Kim

(Wellbeing Captain)

As a wellbeing captain and a member of Mulchat since year 8, it was an honour to be with amazing fellow Mulchatians and teachers. I have been especially happy to see thriving Mulchat from last year, and I hope Mulchatians continue to do so after we leave. I would like to thank everyone for making such a precious moment at Mulchat, and I will miss Mulchat so much!

Since joining Mulchat in Year 8, it has been a meaningful time filled with memorable moments. Through Mulchat, I was able to gain many valuable experiences that I would not have had elsewhere. It has been especially rewarding to see Mulchat grow and achieve so much together. I truly hope Mulchat will continue to thrive and reach even greater heights in the future. Thank you all for making my time in Mulchat so special. I will miss being part of this house so much, and I wish everyone the very best!

Susie Lee (Media Captain)

Although I joined Mulchat later than others, I can’t imagine myself thriving this much in any other house. The journey was long and, though there were difficult moments, it was really all worth it in the end. Every memory I captured within Mulchat is another moment that shows the value of our hard work. The community welcomed me with open arms and I can only hope that I managed to repay even half of what Mulchat has given to me. I can never forget this time of my life and I am sure that we will continue to grow together in the future. Thank you so much for all for the hard work you’ve put into Mulchat!

GOODBYE MESSAGES FROM YEAR 11 LEADERSHIP

Ellie Lee (Sports Captain)

Being part of Mulchat has been one of the most meaningful parts of my school life. As a sports captain, I’ve been able to see how much we’ve grown; not just in results, but in teamwork and effort as a house. From smaller competitions to bigger events, it’s been wonderful to watch everyone contribute and improve together. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and look forward to seeing Mulchat continue to do well. Thank you; I’ll miss being part of Mulchat, and I wish everyone all the best for the future in Mulchat.

JY Seol (Secretary Captain)

I have made great memories with Mulchat since the year I joined, and it has truly been an unforgettable experience to be part of the leadership team in my final year. I am especially proud that our results in house competitions are finally reflecting the level of effort we, as a house, have consistently put in. I am sure that the year 10 leaders have the potential to achieve greater things than we have, and I wish all Mulchatians the best of luck in their future endeavours.

GOODBYE YEAR 11S!!!

Thank you for the wonderful five years you have given to Mulchat House! Please come back to support us when you’re in Sixth Form! Good luck on your IGCSE exams!

THE MOCK EXPERIENCE FROM A YEAR 11'S PERSPECTIVE

For current and future Year 10s

The first thing you should know is that the Mocks are not the be-all-and-end-all Y11 academic experience. In the end, they’re just another series of tests (although admittedly a pretty hefty one).

They will not solve all your problems, nor will they ruin your prospects of getting into a good college. Think of it as a rite of passage – once you suffer through it, you’re ready for the academic rigour of IGCSE and IB.

Get started early, and run through all your subjects at least twice before you take the test. The winter break is an ideal time to get all of this done.

Socialise with your friends, since they’re all going through the same things with you. Play hard, study harder, and may God have mercy on your soul.

NB: THIS IS A ‘DILUTED’ VERSION AN ‘HONEST’ VERSION EXISTS FOR THE STRONG OF HEART. ASK FOR IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

MESSAGE TO THE YEAR 9S

I know that making a jump from KS3 to IGCSE might feel like a huge, frightening step because I had the same feelings, but I want to tell you that there is really no need to worry. IGCSEs are the perfect stepping stones to find what works best for your future. Also, while it is good to think ahead, please don’t stress yourself too much if you haven’t had a plan yet. The most important thing is to choose a subject that you really enjoy. You would naturally think of your future careers and your dream university once you find what really interests you. My top advice for IGCSE is to always check the syllabus, make sure you really understand the topics, and start looking at the actual past paper questions to practice your knowledge. Honestly, please feel free to reach out to me, Kunhee, or any of the older Mulchatians for questions, advice, or resources. You can stop us before tutor time, in the corridors, or send us emails. I believe in you, Mulchatians- you’ve got this!

In term 2, the Year 11s and 10s delivered an IGCSE options presentation to the Year 9s. We are delighted to hear the Year 9s saying how helpful and informative the assembly was, highlighting how they enjoyed learning about how each course was structured. Numerous students stated that realising how these subjects may also be relevant to future career paths allowed their choices to be more meaningful. We are glad that they now have a clearer understanding of the IGCSE programme, and hope it will make their journey much easier next year.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TERM

Year 7 – Jooha Hong (new student)

My highlight of the term was the dragon team exercise and making new friends. The dragon team was really exciting and fun because I could work together with my teammates and cheer for our team. I especially enjoyed participating in different activities and trying my best for my team. I also made new friends this term, and it made school much more fun. We talked, played together, and helped each other in class. I feel really joyful this term.

Year 8 - Iris Chon

My highlight of the term was doing house competitions with my friends It was a very memorable experience because we worked together, supported each other, and enjoyed these things with my friends. These moments made this term more exciting and made stronger teamwork.

Year 9 - Aram Choi

My highlight of the term was the airplane race. In the airplane race, each tutor room worked together to make and build their own airplanes, putting a lot of effort into creative and teamwork. After making the airplanes, we spent little time practicing and testing them to see how far and how well they could fly Everyone was excited and motivated to improve their designs, and the atmosphere was full of energy and friendly competition

HOUSE COMPETITIONS

This term, our house demonstrated outstanding commitment and enthusiasm across a range of activities, proving that success is not only measured by numbers, but by attitude and teamwork.

In Swimming, although selecting participants was challenging, our team spirit stood out. Teammates supported one another with constant cheering, creating an atmosphere full of energy and passion. This positive mindset played a key role in helping the boys secure an impressive first place, showing how encouragement and unity can lead to success.

In Chemistry, students showed remarkable dedication as everyone contributed wholeheartedly for their house. The event was not only filled with energy and confidence, but also highlighted strong intellectual ability. Many participants demonstrated excellent thinking skills, applying their knowledge effectively and working through challenges with determination.

Similarly, in Coding, our house faced the challenge of having fewer teammates Despite this, students remained focused and resilient Through strategic thinking, collaboration, and perseverance, they were able to achieve meaningful results and make a strong impact

KS4 EXPERIENCE

HOUSE COMPETITIONS

The majority of this term’s weather can be described as “cold”, “wet”, and “challenging”. However, this did not prevent Mulchat from trying their best. Whatever sports competition we had, whether we had people missing, we gave it our all For example, the endball competition this term was quite challenging, particularly as it was less familiar compared to other sports. However, as the weeks progressed, we developed new strategies and grew together as a team. This term’s house competitions truly embodied the core values of Mulchat, and I want to take this as an opportunity to thank everyone who took part in endball.

To add on, one of the major house competitions in which Mulchat thrived was House Ensemble. As the bassist of our team, I would like to shout out to Jade for the lovely melody she set, Serena for her incredible

GOODBYE TO THE YEAR 11S

To our year 11s,

As we reach the end of the academic year, we would like to thank the year 11s for their hard work this year and wish them all the very best in their IB journey.

Even though they had countless obstacles that they needed to face, we never saw them giving up or showing any signs of exhaustion, truly being a role model for the younger generation. Mulchat would have never been the same without your help. You led the group with a positive and welcoming environment, provided us with an abundance of joy, and finally, formed good memories with us. Through your support, enthusiasm, and leadership, you helped shape the identity of our house that we will all cherish Our house will definitely feel different when you all leave, and it was an honour to have you as our year 11s We wish all of you happiness, success, and luck as you move forward into a new academic chapter. When times are hard, keep in mind that you are Mulchat, and any challenges can be overcome with resilience, passion, and courage.

Good luck!
