President’s Report “Our wonderful Sweeps award coordinator Haley Jewell, is working hard on getting sweeps awards out by December 15th.” ~ Cheryl Loesch Thank you to participants, donors, bidders, and buyers on our two online club auctions. It was fun to see the donations—which were amazing—and to see the reaction to them. Bidding was heavy, and everyone seemed to enjoy the auctions. Our wonderful Sweeps award coordinator, Haley Jewell, is working hard on getting sweeps awards out by December 15th. We opted to have gift certificates that can be cashed in at a vendor who is working with the club. I look forward to seeing how creative all of you can be with your certificates! I am stepping back from my duties as president of the club for a few weeks due to personal cir-

cumstances. While I am keeping abreast of all of the club’s activities, I cannot at this time give my full attention to it. I am very grateful to Angel LeSage, VP of the club, and the rest of the board for stepping forward during this time to keep the club running smoothly. Your club is in good hands. Vice President’s Report “Bids for Nationals for Spring of 2023 are coming up March 1, 2021.”

Usually in this issue of the newsletter, we are congratulating Convention winners. Covid 19 and RHD has really put a dent into Convention and showing in general. With Covid it has made it difficult to show and be safe. I do think you can keep yourself safe these days at a show. Shows are definitely starting to happen throughout the country, again. There was a West Coast Classic Rabbit show in Reno at the end of October that went well. The Pacific Coast Wooly Rabbit Club is still planning on Nationals in Reno, April 9th, 2021. Coming in and out of Nevada is not a problem except for Californians. You need a health certificate to get back into California. There are back roads into California that do not have check points (don’t tell anyone!). As things look today, I think we are going to have a great National show. So, start making plans to attend. April will be here before you know it. The Amendments to the Constitution and By-laws all passed in the general election. Thank you all for approving the changes. The next step is to make the updates to the CBL and turn the revised Constitution to ARBA when we renew our charter in December. I anticipate there will be more amendment changes proposed in next year’s general election. The CBL is old (writ-

ten in the mid 1980’s) and needs to be brought up to date. The Board usually meets for their annual face to face meeting at Convention. That did not happen this year. We plan to have a live on-line meeting in the near future. Also, Convention is usually when the club makes most of its money to get us through the year. So, without the Golden Fleece Auction we are running lower on revenue than usual. We do have savings in our account that will get us through.

Bids for Nationals for Spring of 2023 are coming up March 1, 2021 . Because of the problem in getting judges we are working ahead 2 years in getting National bids. Just a reminder for those who are graduating from high school or attending first year of college, you may be eligible to apply for the NJWRC Memorial scholarship. There will be up to two $1,000 awards given annually. Applications are due April 1, 2021. Information, guidelines & application are on the club website. Angel LeSage

We still do encounter some circumstances where people pay via the website but I don’t receive the proper application along with it. Can I ask you guys a small favor? If you send someone to join the club please make sure to let them know that I need an application along with any membership, including renewals.

With our recent election results coming out, I was honored to have been granted the opportunity to keep my position as your secretary. Although this pandemic may seem like it has been going on forever, I hope you are taking this time to not only enjoy yourself and your family, but you are also setting goals you would like to change in your rabbitry! Over these past few months Nationals has occurred, and I would like to take the time to congratulate those who attended the event! Congratulations to Rachael Walkup for winning Best of Breed with her Shaded Senior Buck! And to Cody Landis for receiving Best of Opposite Sex Breed with his Broken Senior Doe! Those are great accomplishments and everyone who was excited about their placings should be very proud of themselves.

But after these big shows, oftentimes rabbits’ lose condition due to the stress. A rabbit’s diet is essential to keeping their condition, so it is very important to know what is good and bad for their diets. Some fresh vegetables that can be given every day are lettuce, herbs, carrot tops, brussels sprouts, and zucchini. Some things that need to be given sparingly are carrots, clover, and fruits. Sparingly items tend to contain too much sugar, which may cause runny poops. Other items that can help with condition are rolled oats, barley and grass hay; these items can be given daily. Keep in mind some rabbits can be pickier than others, I have some rabbits that choose some items more than others. I hope this information helps so when it is time for another show, your bunnies are in condition! I hope everyone is staying safe and I see you in the near future!

I need to apologize to you all for the lack of updates. There are less than 100 reports included in these points (which is pretty much everything I’ve received) – and that’s not that many shows. However (I try to avoid the use of the word ‘but’, so ‘however’ is a fancy but!), with these 93 shows, there have been well over 200 sanctions issued & reissued and canceled and maybe reissued and then canceled again. The process has been daunting for sweepstakes people. Adding to the fun of that, not all host clubs are thinking to notify breed clubs with outstanding sanctions that shows have been canceled. So, I’m over here, emailing for late reports – on shows that didn’t happen! I think show personnel are thinking we’d see it on Facebook or be otherwise notified – but we’re not. So, if you’re aware of show cancelations, are members of a host club, etc., please remind show personnel that they need to provide breed clubs with updates. MEMBERS! Check your membership status / expiration dates!! I have some surprising “non-renewals” as of my most recent listing (11/12/2020). I think this is happening in a lot of national breed specialty clubs because people have a tendency to renew in person at ARBA Convention or Breed Nationals. Well, we haven’t had a lot of *those* shows lately! – so please check in with Doug Brown about your status. I will not personally

reach out to members about their status – but if you ask me, I’m more than happy to tell you what my records reflect – but Doug is the Membership Guy. Please be sure you’re keeping him in the loop as well with email address changes, address changes, youth DOB, etc. These things may seem small, but they make Doug’s job easier & my job easier, and we’re all for that! LOL! MEMBERS! If you’re sending me sanctions, please be sure to let me know they’re coming. I recently received one via UPS that was literally soaked though, barely readable (I really should have refused it from UPS), and no contact information inside as to who sent it to me (it was not sent by the host club). Send me off an email that it’s coming so if there’s issues we can connect and get it figured out. Please don’t just include your own contact information within the sanction – in the case of the UPS, it likely wouldn’t have done any good (there was 2 pieces of information I could still read, basically!). So – let me know what you’re up to so we can work better together. Also, please try to refrain from sending money orders if at all possible – they’re more work for you, and if something goes wrong with the sanction, it’s not as easy as just voiding a check. DO NOT SEND CASH – if you’re sans checkbook, contact me & we can work it out – I’ll provide you with my personal PayPal and then I’ll write a personal check on your behalf. Hello District 1 members. 2020 has been a year to remember for sure. I hope that everyone is still holding on and pursuing strong breeding programs. I am really hoping 2021 brings our beloved shows back with a vengeance. We took a break in breeding for the summer but have started back and have just palpated a few does positive in the last few days. Hopefully these litters will be successful and will be the start of our spring line up. Something that you can take advantage in this time of no shows are Facebook groups. There are several good groups out there with a LOT of good questions being asked. Get involved and ask away. Take in all the advice from seasoned breeders and help answer the questions from new breeders. Remember, the only

dumb question is the unasked question. Write out clear goals for yourself and your herd. Once thing we did was to go through every rabbit in the barn and find recurring faults and strengths. From there we planned out our breeding program and were surprised at some of the changes that came our way. Some of the animals we started to use more and some of the animals we retired. It really drove home the fact that a breeding program is a constantly changing thing while striving for perfection. Good luck to everyone and keep pushing forward. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and 2021 will be great! Meadow

Things are fairly quiet on the rabbit show front in D2 but things are beginning to pick up. There have been a few shows hosted by dedicated clubs in our district and we’ve had a few members attending them. Congratulations to Lori Robasciotti on her three BOB wins with her handsome buck, TM’s Godric, at the Fall edition of West Coast Classic in Reno, NV! Her buck also won Best Colored Wool in all three breed shows and won BOB JW in the War of the Wools specialty show. There was a surprisingly good number of Woolies being shown the weekend and competition was great fun.

Hello District 4 members! Hope everyone is doing well. I’m so excited that the shows are up and going again! I have missed seeing my friends and showing my rabbits. I went to my first show this season a couple weeks ago. That show was super crowded and people were not abiding by the mask rules. I was a little disappointed by that. But the next show I went to was much more organized and social distancing and mask wearing was strongly enforced. I appreciated that. I also appreciated the steps they took to try and keep the rabbits safe from spreading anything as best they could. Coops were cleaned and disinfected after each breed. And the judges used hand sanitizer A LOT. It’s not fool proof of course, but it’s a step in the right direction. I hope most shows are like this second one. We all have to do our part and try and keep everyone and every rabbit safe so we can keep doing what we love.

On to more fun topics...it’s that time of the year that as a rabbit breeder we all appreciate. Winter is coming! Or well, for most of us here in TEXAS, weather below 90 degrees is coming! That means gorgeous coats on Jersey Woolies and it means it’s time to really step up the breeding and go through the juniors. For me, this time of year also means it’s time for my winter rabbit barn cleaning. Time to clean and blow out the air conditioners and fans. And before it gets too cold, I power wash all the cages, tables, and anything else I can. I also sweep the walls and ceilings of any rabbit wool and cobwebs. I make sure all the nest boxes and heat lamps are ready for what I always hope is lots and lots of new litters. There is nothing better than a freshly cleaned out rabbit barn and lots of new baby bunnies to go through. Wishing you all a very safe and fun show season!! Kendra

Technically, Fall has arrived. Here in Louisiana, we are still having some pretty warm days in the 80s as other parts of the US have snow on the ground. My Woolies will not be in their best coats until February, but as they say it comes with the territory. Nationals this year had many obstacles to overcome. More than 35+ states were not allowed to enter New York without a 14 day quarantine due to Covid, which made it impractical for most of us to attend. Congratulations to the winners that were able to make it. With that being said, the NJWRC will be looking at options in addressing future National shows when there are things such as pandemics and rabbit viruses that will affect the participation of the membership. On a positive note, Nationals 2021 is scheduled for April in Reno, NV. Rabbit shows are picking up in the South. We had a great turnout of Wooly

competitors at the District 6 Convention all breed show held in Knoxville, Tennessee in October. The Louisiana Jersey Wooly Breeders Association was able to hold a Friday night specialty show with approximately 104 entries in open, youth, and fur. I would like to publicly thank Kirsten and Brandon Taylor for stepping in to handle the running of the show, along with Marge Drake, show secretary, as I had vehicle trouble and did not make it on time for the specialty show. Kirsten also handled the show awards which was great. In conclusion, I hope your nest boxes are filled with plenty of winners. Despite being mid-November, my area hit 71° today! I took advantage of the pleasant weather to do some barn cleaning and move a few rabbits around. As lovely as the sunny day and warm temperatures were, rabbits tend not to do well with drastic extremes. Over the course of the week it will become more seasonally chilly and I’ll be keeping an eye on everyone to make sure they are handling the stress well. As the pandemic continues rabbit shows remain few. Some of the Maine Wooly ladies decided to get together this past October and show off our herds, exchange rabbits and generally catch up after months apart. Wearing masks for hours on end is always a pain but worth the hassle of being able to see friends while keeping everyone safe. We enjoyed ourselves enough that we’re trying to plan for another before snow arrives (since these get-togethers must

take place outside for safety and ease of social distancing). With the end of the year fast approaching we are all looking ahead to the future; what litters will we plan for the winter? Will there be shows we can attend and, if so, what rabbits can we enter? Hopefully we can all plan events where we can (safely) gather and visit, even if there is no show to attend. After all, the rabbits are what get us into this hobby but the friendships are a large part of what keep us in it. Hope everyone has a great Holiday Season. As of the day that I am writing this article, the new ARBA SOP has been released. It has awesome artwork by Amanda Olson on the cover. Don’t forget to order your new one. They are good for the next 5 years. I would love to have more discussions with breeders as to what you think is the correct body type, and correct wool. We have such a variety of each on the show tables today. For the sake of this article I will be discussing my opinions on some of this.

The other area I see the most variations of is wool. Jersey Woolies are the only breed where texture is worth more points than density. You would think that the easy care coat would be enough to set us apart from all other wool breeds. However, I still feel like the dense rabbit is rewarded more I have noticed a trend in Jersey Woolies, on the show table. National Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club Memorial Scholarship Youth Scholarship Application

Up to two Scholarships will be awarded in an amount of $1,000. The application is due by April 1st. Please answer all the questions completely. The application needs to be typed in a separate document with question answered within a narrative format. ORANGE COD PRESENTATION 2020 THE STRUGGLE OF GOING VIRTUAL

It is one month since the presentation failed and I am still working on digesting the result. Although I was told I’d receive a report from the ARBA Standard Committee, as of this date, I have not received one. What I know from what was said at the time, was that they felt the quality of type was not consistent throughout. The junior doe, HG1, in particular seemed to be a problem and the term “fine bone” was used. That term floored me. I chose to use that doe because she has such a solid body and has great color, but she was at that bad age most breeders don’t show due to their head and ear looking out of balance because their wool cap hasn’t fully developed. Perhaps that lack of cap led to be perceived as fine bone. Use of that term also was surprising because I have often been complimented on the good bone of my rabbits. In fact, the Sunday following presentation, I was blessed to win BOB with a tort buck

out of my orange program, whose mother (an outcross) had what I considered too fine a bone and had removed from my breeding program after only a couple of breedings. Fortunately, the tort buck inherited the bone of my orange line, but did inherit from the mother, the shorter ear length I was looking for. This brought me to wondering if ears were an issue, and in so doing, I realized that many of the still pictures I took, just after presentation, made the ears and heads look longer than they looked in real life. My friend Zach, who assisted with the presentation by handling and posing the rabbits, also commented that in spite of squaring the rabbits on the table as we had rehearsed, the video stream was skewed slightly to the backend of the rabbit. Then it dawned on me that the camera must have moved from its original position at the very beginning of presentation when I tried to quickly turn the sound off on the camera to prevent a bad feed-

back sound, since two devices were in use in close proximity. To provide evidence, I took pictures of the presentation animals with a handheld camera at the proper angle (Figure 1) and took photos of the head and ear of my GC Fuzzyville’s Kisszer at different positions. The perceived length and ear thickness due to the difference of camera angle, was remarkable (See Figure 2 & 3). I even sent the pictures of Kisszer to the Standard Committee chair, which she replied, she, in turn, forwarded to the committee. I’m not expecting anything to come of the follow up photos, but I needed to do it for myself and all the hard work that has gone into the process. Beyond the fact that it took several weeks, purchases, changes of equipment, and trial runs to be sure the color appeared true on camera, I have long been fighting an uphill battle. I have about 200 square feet of space devoted to my rabbits, leaving me with a working herd of about 40 animals, max of 80 during breeding seasons. Although small numbers lead me to cull hard, which is good, when dealing with the odds of 25% - 50% of a litter being eliminated from the equation just because of the dwarfing gene, it puts the program at a deficit many other breeds do not experience. Include the genetics of producing and conditioning a dwarf wooled rabbit of bright clean color and good type, composed of a combination of some dominant and some recessive color genes, including genes the rabbit and scientific world aren’t even sure of the actual number involved (resulting in unavoidable variety even when 2 rabbits of the same Rufus intensity are bred), is formidable at best. Add into this equation that at least 12 are needed to be ready at a time most Wooly breeders know, coming off a hot summer, is the worst season for showing. I chose to favor the importance of color in this presentation, even deciding to show some from differing lines to emphasize that good color was possible beyond one line. Something I think would be important to consider if the color was to become beneficial to the breed. Whereas, not all were in the prime of coat, condition or type, I truly believe this was a quality presentation and much stronger than the year before.

The committee chose to believe otherwise. It is difficult to navigate through this process when the rules aren’t very clear cut. In fact, the rabbit deemed the best of my successful presentation in 2019, was considered one of my worst in the failed presentation of 2018 (FNMZ1). There were only two factors that changed. He had an inch more of wool due to a cooler summer and earlier molt, but there was also an improvement in the overall quality of the presentation animals selected for 2019. The latter factor wasn’t just my opinion, as it was echoed by both the NJWRC and the ARBA Standards Committees. If the rules were more clearly defined, he should not have placed so differently in the minds of the committee just because he had more length of coat. It seems to me that the committee is placing more emphasis on the rabbits in the moment of presentation and not taking in the full account of improvement over time, nor the fact that good clean color is achievable beyond one line. I see this as a fault of the process and not necessarily members of the committee themselves. Personally, I think the process should not be subject to just one view of the program, once a year. So what happens next? I’ve got a 2nd chance at the 2nd presentation next year. Hopefully it will be in person so there is a hands on and 3D visual component to the presentation. If there is not, I will most likely sit out a video presentation. In the meantime, I have an extra year to continue to improve. I will be tightening up on line breeding because, in spite of what the committee surmised, I know I have both the quality of type and color to do so. A huge thank you to all of you who have supported me with your kind words and actions throughout this endeavor. Regardless of what happens I know I am truly blessed and a better person to have gone through it.

Hi everyone, My name is Isaac White and first, I would like to thank the scholarship committee for selecting my application for the NJWRC Memorial scholarship! Rabbits have played such a major role in my life and I am so grateful for all of the wonderful memories and people I have met through the hobby. I have raised rabbits since 2016 and started off in the hobby with Holland lops. However, I acquired my first Jersey Woolies in 2017 and fell in love with the breed. I mainly raised AOVs, selfs, and shadeds. I have also raised and shown American Fuzzy Lops and Mini Satins. Before leaving for school I sold down a majority of my wool breeds to make upkeep of the herd easier while I was away. Currently I am a freshman at Iowa State University majoring in animal science on the General Pre-Veterinary track. I am also working towards a minor in genetics, with the plans to attend the College of Veterinary Medicine here at Iowa State. I have also obtained my ARBA registrarâ€™s license and plan to work towards my judgeâ€™s license when the time comes. Thank you so much for this scholarship which I am grateful to use to continue my education in an area that raising rabbits has made me enjoy so much.

Why did you choose Jersey Woolies as the breed to raise? This breed was my daughter, Kasey’s choice. She researched the breed and in 1995, Lisa Smith sent a foursome of awesome Woolys from Michigan on a flight to San Antonio.

When Kasey went off to A&M in 2000…. I said, “My turn.” Husband said, “No more shows for me.” In his defense….. He still is a big help in the physical labor in managing a working rabbitry of 125 holes. Son said, “I’m going fishing.” So I got a cell phone and an AAA card and fearlessly took off down the road on my own with a dozen of Kasey’s Jersey Woolys. Jersey Woolys are such friendly animals, good mommas, and I so appreciate how a doe can kindle a litter and be back on the show table in three-to-four months! I have come to greatly appreciate how easy it is to raise a wool breed in South Texas heat. The wool coat seems to act as insulation, and they manage 95 degree weather very well….. under floor, wall, and ceiling fans. Who was/is your mentor? Sherry Young in Ennis, TX helped me so much those first 5 years. She taught me how to evaluate type, the value of a brood doe, how to groom, and most of all…. how to have fun showing rabbits. Then, in buying rabbits from Fuzzyville Rabbitry for 6-7 years…. Timmy and Danielle Bauer answered so many of my questions and guided me on breeding for TYPE, how to line-breed with success, and how to train a Wooly to hold that pose. I just bought their last two Woolys. I am fortunate to be three hours driving time from Chase Austin. We have a fun time going through young juniors, comparing specific traits in seniors, and swapping Woolys for breeding. Chase has taught me the finer characteristics of TYPE and WOOL, and inspiring me to “step outside the box” with breeding decisions. Now, I so enjoy mentoring the kids here. Just picked up a newbie who is 65+ years old! At shows, I like to demonstrate to kids how to groom a Wooly, help them evaluate juniors, and answer all kinds of questions. I give a DoggieMan slicker and a rolling comb to each new person I find starting in Jersey Woolys. Over the years, I have given away Woolys, provided breedings with my bucks, taken kids to shows, and given NJWRC memberships. Give back….. Nurture the future. What are your biggest challenges in caring for Jersey Woolies? I am terrible at keeping juniors groomed. I so prefer to cut the coat down to half inch and put them in the back row till they are senior age. I found wool caps stay clean if I use EZ-crocks for feeders. Hanging cages make cleaning easier….. Torch, bar-b-que brush…. Done. What are your biggest challenges in showing Jersey Woolies? I rarely show juniors due to the consistent comment from Texas judges: “Junior can’t beat a senior.” BUT, twice have

I proved them wrong. Grow juniors out and show as seniors. And that takes TIME and cage space! Patience is my biggest challenge. Then the challenge with does, at least, is SHOW or BREED? How to time that litter for a future big show. How to get that coat in prime condition for a big show. Early on, I found my Woolys had stress diarrhea after the second show on a 2-day schedule. Got so tired of cleaning butts at shows. Now I give each bun a dropper of Wet-Tail as I load the carriers at home and a second dose the morning of the second show day. And provide electrolyte/probiotic water, hay, and Pro-Fibre pellets at the show. I am OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) about keeping the Woolys in clean carriers. Putting layers of puppy pads and wood pellets in the pans at home does make for heavier carriers, but I feel it is worth it to keep the buns comfortable. Roll

up the soiled top layer and the fresh layer is underneath! VOILA! What are your goals in your rabbitry? My current goal is WOOL…. Long, flowing guard hairs with correct density and texture. Oh, yeah…. And keep the TYPE as well. I strive to put more color on Brokens and am excited about the new Broken guidelines in the up-coming SOP. What are you most proud of in your breeding accomplishments? My first BIS was a REW doe, GC Kasey’s Sugar, born and raised in my barn, out of an ugly brood doe from Lisa Smith. I fainted in the crowd around the judging table. I am most proud of creating GC Kathy’s Encino, a broken black buck. He was just the right combination of Amber Henderson’s GC Wonder’s Phoenix line and the Bauer’s’ Fuzzyville line to get the gorgeous coat on a typey rabbit. With over 20+ legs, he is a joy to show on the table and watch judges go “WOW” over his coat. Now the challenge is to get offspring with more color on the coat and his same type and wool traits. What is your favorite part of the hobby? I show rabbits for the friendships, the people, young and old. I will publicly admit that I am really an introvert and prefer to stand on the perimeter to listen and soak up rab-

bit knowledge shared by others; however, I do so enjoy talking to kids about Woolys. They are so thirsty for knowledge and anxious to learn. And I strive to learn something new at every show I attend. Do you have any special projects in the barn? I still dabble with the RED Jersey Wooly project that I bought from Marcia Hinkelmann back in 2009. I would like to acquire the COD for a second try, but do not think there is enough national support for success. I do think the Rufus factor needs to be put back on Otters and Opals as the current Tan/Agouti markings are so faded out to almost white. I also breed for Cinnamons or Chocolate Agoutis, and for Lynx. Those are genetic fun! Do you raise any other breeds? I raise Mini Lops and meatpen New Zealands to pay the feed bill and fund my show expenses. The meatpen sales also give me opportunity to teach kids and Ag teachers about raising rabbits for meat as well as competition. T h e

Favorite Rabbit Memory: I will always have a place in my heart for a special REW doe, bred by Gayle Beirau…. RH’s Pretty Pretty Princess. That doe had the coat, type, attitude, and show presence. Princess went on to earn over 32 legs. Sadly, I never got a worthy offspring from her, but she retired to my Ol’ Timers’ Row with grace. Kathy’s Encino, broken black buck, earned Best Open Junior at 2019 Nationals in Louisiana as an old junior (learned that trick from Brian Caudill). That it was awarded by Allan Mescik and Scott Rodriguez, made it an even more special moment. I really enjoy showing that Wooly. I was the NJWRC newsletter editor from 2000-2004 (I think?). That was a marvelous opportunity to upgrade the newsletter from a stapled flyer into digital publishing and to provide lots of educational articles for the membership. I so enjoyed using my computer skills for something besides the teaching job. Sticking mailing labels on the magazine was actually fun… to see all the locations of memberships. W i n t e r

GAIL MORE & MORE’S TOMBSTONE As 2019 came to a close and the spring show season started up in 2020, I had high hopes for a fun and exciting show season. More’s Tombstone was on a roll. He had several wins under his belt, including a Best in Show. He was doing well in the points sweeps and was ranking #1 for Rabbit of the Year. Our Jersey Wooly Girls group, from Ohio and surrounding areas, had 2 big shows planned for 2020....Nationals in Syracuse, and Convention in Harrisburg. Both shows were within a 5-6 hour drive which is not a bad drive for big and important shows. With the plans set, we had our first couple of shows of the season in February and early March. Tombstone was having a bad hair day, and skipped the first show and had a couple group wins but nothing special the next show. There were more shows to come, so no worries, right?

Little did we know at the time that the early March show would be the last show we could attend due to the COVID-19 crisis. It was heartbreaking to see show after show cancelled. Traveling out of state was not an option either. Then, as if COVID wasn’t bad enough, the RHD virus was running rampant out west. Shows were shutting down, states were being locked down, traveling out of state was banned due to either virus, or both. What a disappointment it was to have all of our shows cancelled. Big shows too, like Nationals and OSRBA were being cancelled. By June, pretty much every show around us was cancelled, and that was the end of the show season for Tombstone. This was very disappointing, because he was looking pretty good heading into summer and the end of the sweeps year. He was still holding onto that first place spot for Rabbit of the Year too, but then some shows in the Midwest were able to continue, and Tombstone was bumped to #2 in the rank-

ings. The irony is that the first place ROY, Domino, owned by Brenda Kneir, was from a breeding she did with rabbits from my lines and Tombstone was bred from 2 rabbits from Hopewell’s Rabbitry (April and Kaitlynn Sefcik). As the virus crisis continued throughout the summer, hopes of fall shows pretty much dwindled down to nothing. Small sparks of hope kept popping up for Nationals being held in NY in the fall and things were still up in the air for the Convention. I don’t remember the exact details of timing, but an in person Convention was finally cancelled, and a virtual show just wasn’t the same. As the time approached for Nationals in Syracuse, the state show was cancelled and hopes for Nationals was once again lost. By some miracle, all of the hard work paid off, and the show committee was finally able to put together Nationals on a farm but travel bans were issued again and Ohio was on the banned list for travel to NY. We Ohio area Jersey Wooly Girls had pretty much given up on all shows for the rest of the year by this time. Of course, as luck would have it, Tombstone was in prime coat and condition. What a huge disappointment that there wasn’t a way to get him to the show. One rabbit pal decided she was going to Nationals after all and made plans for her rabbits to be passed to another breeder to show on her behalf. Another pal was going too, so between the two of them, they got Tombstone to New York and on the table for Nationals.

them. That’s how Tombstone came to be. April had a Rew buck, Hopewell’s Wyatt, and a black doe and she asked me if I could use them. I brought them home and made some babies. Tombstone was one of them, so a big shout out to April for the genetics! A shout out as well to Laurie Wood and Barb Sherlock for taking such good care of Tombstone at Nationals. A special thanks to all of the hard working people that were able to allow the woolies to have a Nationals despite all of the setbacks. Let’s hope 2021 is a better year all around for this wonderful hobby! Stay safe, and hopefully we will see you at a show in the spring!

I had other plans that day and didn’t really give the show much thought. Then I got a very exciting Facebook message from Michelle Landis that Tombstone took Best of Breed at Nationals and went on to win Best White Wool and Best Overall Wool. That was fun especially since I hardly ever enter wool! Thanks to Bill Miller for the phone call so that Donna Grimm, Judge, and the breeders in attendance could tell me Congratulations over the phone! Overall I was thrilled he won and thankful because it took a village to get him to Nationals and back. My fellow breeders in the Ohio area are absolutely awesome. We love to show together, travel together, and love to help each other and new breeders in this awesome hobby. We often buy/sell/trade rabbits amongst each other to help each other in improving this wonderful breed. If we have a rabbit that we don’t need, and someone else could use it, then it goes home with T h e

he Rabbit of the year award is based upon an accumulation of BOB or BOS sweepstakes bounus points for an exhibitor whose animal accumulates those points. The sweepstakes contest runs from July 1 of one year through June 30 of the following year. Any NJWRC member is eligible to compete for these points. There is a separate contest for Open and Youth. Domino is a fun rabbit to have around. He is a natural poser and likes to show off. I have to give credit to my friend Gail More for raising his parents. His sire is More’s Grady, a cute little broken blue who has earned 22 GC legs. More’s Clementine is his dam. She is a big black showy girl with 11 GC legs. Domino is the proud owner of 52 GC legs.

ROTY 2: M492 Var / Sex: Self Buck Name: More’s Tombstone Bred & Owned by: Gail More More’s Tombstone, M492, is a REW SR buck born on 6/15/2018 bred by Gail More. The name Tombstone comes from his sire, Wyatt...as in Wyatt Earp. Most of Wyatt’s offspring have names related to Wyatt Earp or for things he was famous for, such as Tombstone Arizona. Both of Tombstones parents, Hopewell’s Wyatt, REW, and Hopewell’s Ebonique, Black. come from Hopewell’s Rabbitry owned by April and Kaitlin Sefcik.

Notable rabbitries in his lines include ZA, BB, Lyle Creek, Allstar, and CR. In 2019 Tombstone earned 20 legs which include 2 BOS, 9 BOB, 1 Reserve in Show, and 1 Best in Show.

I am thrilled to see that Wonder’s Toa earned a top 5 Rabbit of the Year award and did so being shown only three times this sweeps year! That is an accomplishment of which I am quite proud. I keep a small rabbitry of around 15 rabbits so any big win means that much more to me. Toa has done wonderfully her entire life. A combination of my own Wonder’s and Keep’s lines, she is the result of a decade and a half of sweat and tears. We really put all our hearts into these beautiful bundles of love and fluff. I am happy to share this hobby with the folks that make it worthwhile. You are kind, honest, funny, critical thinkers, truly loving and supportive. I named him THE One because when I was going through the herd (many times) he kept popping up with his nice body and wool texture & color. I decided he must be “the one” I have been looking for — so hence the name. His wool color is beautiful. The pictures do not do justice to his blue color.

But Allstar’s Beautiful Masterpiece sure does take the cake for the best texture that I have ever produced. She has set a standard for me for coats in my barn, and it always pushes me to better my coats with each breeding I do. Although she has a great coat her attitude sure does get her in trouble sometimes! She leapt at my face, while I was blowing her, and nearly gave me a black eye. But I was okay! Allstar’s Beautiful Masterpiece receiving #8 Rabbit of the Year sure is a blessing, due to Covid-19 and pulling back on attending shows. So, this is a great honor for my Mother and I.

He is such a joy to have in the barn and he has Fun struting his fluff! He has earned BOSG Broken at the 2019 ARBA Convention. Words cannot express how grateful we are to have won Best Of The Best at the 2019 Christmas Show with over 8,000 entries. Broken Halos won 2 Best of Breeds, 1 Best Opposite Sex, 2 Best Group 4 wins, 1 Best in Show and the Best of The Best 2020 Michigan Convention quad show he was Best of Breed in all 4 shows and 2020 Halloween Havoc in Indiana he was Best in Show Specialty on Friday night and Best of Breed the following day in all 3 shows, he was also an honorable mention for Best in Show A. We are excited to see his future offspring and what they may hold....he has been a busy guy!

AFB’s Panda Bear is out of Allstar’s Leo x AFB’s Charmaine. Panda currently has 19 legs with 2 Youth BIS, 1 Youth RIS and multiple BOBs in Open and Youth. He has been producing some amazing babies for us and some of our friends.

ROTY 4: SE Var / Sex: Shaded Doe Name: Furry Treasures Summers End Owned by: Madelyn DeSelm Summer is a princess. She is absolutely beautiful, and I was in love the first time I saw her. Summer loves her food and will help you put it down if you aren’t quick enough. I’m looking forward to her babies hitting the show table soon.

Greenbrier Hambone is a 2018 chestnut buck. I am so thankful that his breeder, Frances Haskins, trusted me with him. Hambone has helped me achieve so many show and breeding goals that I had set for myself! He has performed brilliantly on the show table and has proven himself as an excellent producer. Not only is he a beautiful rabbit but he has an amazing personality! Hambone is such a playful boy and a joy to have in our barn.

I am so proud that one of my homebred rabbits is on this list! Honey is a daughter of Greenbrier Hambone and Fuzzyvilles Hazelnut. She has lovely fur, a great head and ear and tremendous width and depth. It was very exciting watching her develop from a cute little baby to a powerhouse doe. Honey is absolutely our favorite doe due to her star qualities and darling personality!

Donatello was my first homegrown winner. He started off as a junior by earning BOG at convention in 2018. He then did very well on both youth and open show tables as well as being an excellent herd buck.

The rabbit that placed 10th this year in youth is a rabbit bred by April Sefcik of Hopewells Rabbitry. This rabbit goes by Spike in my barn, a name that I kept after I purchased him from my friend when she was getting out of the Woolies. He has helped me not only on the show table, but in my barn as well. He was the rabbit that got me started in the chinchillas. I have been working hard to develop a pretty, correctly colored chin with the guidance of my mentor DeAnn Boulier and other incredible open and youth who love to educate. Because of this amazing rabbit, I have begun breeding rabbits that I am proud of, but it has been a challenging and at times frustrating experience.
