Preseident's Report If it seems like we just had an issue come out, you’re right about that! We changed editors, and now that we’ve got the kinks worked out a bit, we should be able to get the FLUFF back onto its usual schedule. We’ve just come off of our National show in Stillwater, Minnesota, hosted by the Great Plains Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club. The show was very well attended, with 242 entries and 39 exhibitors in Open, 64 entries and 7 exhibitors in Youth. These are very encouraging numbers, after these years of Covid and RHDv2 diminishing our shows! I’d like to Congratulate all of the exhibitors, especially our winners: BOB to Helene Achgill with a Pointed White doe, BOS to Kathy Moerbe with a Broken buck in Open; BOB to Makayla Wallock with a pointed white doe, BOS to Max and Jocelyn Byers with a shaded buck in Youth. It was a nice weekend for pointed whites! It wasn’t a very nice weather weekend, but we all made the best of it, and we all enjoyed the river boat cruise and banquet. We had many comments that it was the best banquet yet.
Upcoming:
Our current sweeps year ends on June 30, and the new one starts on July 1st. Final points for this sweeps year will be tallied by early September. Almost immediately, we will turn our attention to planning for Convention in October. The club begins work on the many events we participate in at convention, not the least of which is the Golden Fleece Auction. In regards to that, if you are doing well in sweeps, you may be asked if you’d like to donate a rabbit to the GFA. You’ll want to be thinking about a nice animal to donate, perhaps holding back an animal you might have sold before Convention. The GFA is a 50/50 auction, with 50% of the proceeds going to the NJWRC, and 50% to the donor. It’s a huge honor to be asked to donate, and I speak from experience in saying that there is also huge pressure to donate a nice animal that will both be in coat, and represent the breed well. It’s also great fun to see the animal you donated help out another breeder on the table, or in the nest box. We are also preparing for our annual Board elections. This year, even-numbered district directors, Secretary, and Vice President positions will be up for election. You’ll see candidate bios and photos elsewhere in this edition of the FLUFF. The actual election takes place in August and early September, with the new board slate taking up their positions at Convention.

District 1 Report Hello District 1 members! I hope you are all doing well and getting lots of babies in the nest box this Spring! As many of us are gearing up for shows, something has been on my mind lately that I believe is an important part of supporting our hobby. For me that is mentoring new breeders and sharing our knowledge with those still learning. Being a mentor can look different for each breeder but the most important part, in my opinion, is sharing what we have learned and encouraging others to keep improving our beloved breed, the Jersey Wooly. Mentoring can be extremely fulfilling and allows for long lasting friendships to form as well as encouraging breeders not to give up when their project seems to be at a standstill. I personally have seen many great examples of a mentor helping new and experienced breeders. This can look like visiting their barn to evaluate brood animals, helping them go over juniors at a show, or simply talking over genetics and pedigrees. Often times helping someone think of a different way to fit the “puzzle piece” together or a second set of eyes when you feel like you’ve become “barn blind” is exactly what is needed to help someone improve their herd. I think at times we have all felt a bit discouraged in our breeding programs and a helpful tip or a positive spin can motivate us to keep pushing forward and not to give up! I am so thankful for the friendships I have made and tips I have picked up from mentors and even from mentoring others. It is a wonderful thing to see and know when others lend a helping hand! ~Bethany Robertson

District 2 Report As we go through a lull in shows during the heat of summer months, we look forward to the promise of cooler weather and the beginning growth of fresh coats on our rabbits in the Fall. Most of all, we look forward to the ARBA Convention where we'll get to see our friends from all across the country! With the Convention being in Reno this year, and within our district, we are the team "on the ground" for the NJWRC. District 5 Report Hello District 5! Hope you all are staying cool. The summer heat didn’t waste any time moving into Southeast Mo. It’s time to take measures to keep the bunnies cool! Rabbits can suffer and die from heat stroke. It’s best to be prepared to prevent that from happening. Watch for signs of overheating. Fast, shallow breathing, hot ears, tossing head back and breathing with mouth open, listlessness, wet nose, can be signs your bunny is in trouble. If your rabbits are housed outside you will want to make sure they are shaded at all times. If you don’t have natural shade from trees you can set up an awning or umbrellas. Direct sunlight can quickly cause overheating. If possible, set up fans. Frozen 2 liter soda bottles and ceramic tiles are great for helping rabbits keep cool. Fresh, cool water is important. If possible, change water out a couple times daily to keep it cool. You can also add ice cubes to their water. If you are using fans or air conditioning it’s very important to keep those clean. Ventilation is also important. I haven’t shown much this year, hopefully that will change this fall! I miss my bunny friends! Until then keep yourself and those bunnies cool! 2022 Jersey Wooly Nationals are in the history books. I was fortunate to attend the show in Stillwater, MN. It was 1144 miles one way for me; however, other club members had an even farther drive. The Wooly dinner was on the paddle-wheel boat, Jubilee II, Saturday evening. Although the weather was cold and raining the entire weekend, the cruise was nice. Congratulations goes to Helene Achgill with her AOV Sr. Doe for Best of Breed and Kathey Moerbe with her Broken Sr. buck for Best Opposite of Breed. I was to give an updated report on the number of Woolies and exhibitors that showed at the West Monroe, LA show. Unfortunately, I was not able to get those statistics. I can say it was a very big showing for our area. I am pleased to say that I have several litters in the nest boxes and looking forward to putting them on the show table this Fall. I will be finishing up my show season in a few weeks. My last show will be the Louisiana Memorial Day weekend show in Alexandria held the last weekend of May. It just gets too hot to show in the South during summer. In ending, please send me pictures, tips, and Best in Show wins. District 7 Report I'm so excited to have some D7 wins to report! At the Wooly Nationals on 4/30 in Stillwater, MN, Steven Buell & Connie Forward of NY won Open BOG Tan with a Sr Doe. Ryan Brehm won Open AOV with a Sr Buck. Congrats to all! A little earlier that month, on 4/9, Daniel Kuyoth won Open BIS with a Shaded Sr Doe under Judge Kyle Yaccobucci at the Catskill Region RCBA in Otisville, NY. He then proceeded to win an Open RIS with an AOV Sr Doe under Judge Nicole Bortz at the Garden State RCBA in Augusta, NJ on Saturday May, 7th. The next day, 5/8/22, Kylie Sydney of NY won a Youth BIS with a Broken Jr Doe, Adore's Midnight Pony, under Judge Johnny Haussener at the NJ State RCBA in Augusta, NJ. Many Congrats, Kylie! I really appreciate having these reports come in. D7 has some awesome breeders with amazing animals and it's a pleasure to be able to highlight them. Thank you to the members who sent emails with the details. I want to take a moment to mention Lisa Smith. She wasn't a D7 member but she was someone who had an impact on me when I was a kid. I met her in my mid teens and remember her as gregarious, kind and a fountain of knowledge. She sold me my first BEW - a fairly new color at the time - whom I named Hale-Bopp, after the comet that was in our skies that year. We didn't speak much after I reached adulthood but I saw her posts frequently when I was still using FB regularly and loved seeing the pics of her French Bulldogs. It's obvious she was well loved and is much missed. My condolences to her family.

District 8 Report Wow just back, literally yesterday, from a whirlwind Nationals. The Great Plains Jersey Wooly Club did an excellent job. The banquet on the riverboat was awesome. I think a good time was had by all. District 8 was represented well. The BOB winner Helene Achgill with her beautiful pointed. It was awesome to see both youth and open were won by pointed whites. What a great testament to the comeback of this group. Also, the wine about it award went to Deann and Niles Boulier with their junior broken doe. Youth, Max and Joscelyn Byers won BOS with their shaded buck, and also placed with their ruby eyed white. Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Manitoba & Ontario As we discussed Agouti group last Fluff, this Fluff will be the All-other Variety which only includes pointed white at this time. Hopefully soon the Orange will join this group. It is also fitting as both Youth and Open were won by Pointed whites. Just a note on Agouti, there were several disqualified at ARBA convention and NJWRC Nationals for wrong under color which was both belly and over back. Several were Chestnut. We also had some for no ring color, chestnut and chin. Pointed White-Currently only black and blue are accepted colors. Body color is to be pure white. Markings (nose, ears, feet and tail) are to be the color as described in the self-colored variety. Black or Blue. Nose markings are to be distinct and run well up the face. Pigment may often be seen below the nose. Ears are to be fully colored and clean cut at the base. Color is to extend as far as possible up the legs. Top and underside of the tail is to be colored. Toenails must show color. Light toenails, showing pigmentation, must match on the same foot and on the corresponding foot. Eyes-ruby pupil, with pink iris. Faults-Very faded color on points; uneven markings, frosted in appearance to the marking color. Disqualifications from competition-Tan pattern markings (nostril, inside of ears, break in color on insides of the legs, and or lack of color on underside of tail), white spot in any marking, complete lack of any marking, smut on the usable portion of the wool (eye stain permitted), definite white nail(s), unmatched toenails on the same foot or corresponding foot. What you can see- smaller smut on nose, usually is an indication that the animal is carrying Ruby Eyed White. Off colored ears, usually an indication of the animal carrying non extension. Best way to darken point color is to breed pointed to pointed. Best way to improve type is to bring in a non rew carrying black or a seal. You can use a rew carrier, but keep in mind to breed back to pointed and keep best colored to try and eliminate that rew from this color group. I also want to just say that I think that this group is one of the hardest to work on and improve and keep in mind that there are a lot of new breeders that always want to start in this group, advise in the best way possible. I will leave you with the reminder to keep back a few of your rabbits for the Golden Fleece Auction at Reno this year. May your nest boxes be full. Julie Aversa

District 9 Report Jersey Wooly Nationals was a wonderful, fun-filled, friend-filled weekend in Stillwater, MN! We missed all of those that couldn’t attend. Despite the crazy weather, the barn was full of laughter, smiles and beautiful Jersey Woolies. Thank you so much to the Great Plains Wooly Rabbit Club for hosting such a fun Nationals. The dinner cruise on Saturday night was an awesome idea! Thank you also to the Judges for their wonderful critiques and handling of the rabbits. Congratulations to all of the winners!! I’m not sure if this is a new record, but both Youth and Open were won by absolutely stunning Black Pointed White SR Does!! Everyone should be very proud of the quality of the rabbits that crossed the tables. We are already making plans and looking forward to ARBA Convention in Reno, NV this October and the 2023 JW Nationals in Canton, OH next spring! We hope to see many of you there too. Congratulations to the Louisiana Jersey Wooly Breeders Association for winning the 2024 Nationals Bid! I am super excited to get to travel to LA the end of Feb 2024 for Nationals.

Secretary Report Members of the Njwrc; I hope this article finds you all doing well. As I write this, we are finally getting a reprieve from our unseasonably warm weather we have had here in west central Wisconsin. Mother nature seemed to want to skip spring and jump right into summer here. A couple of weeks ago we had our Jersey Wooly national show, held by the Great Plains Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club. I was able to attend the national show, but unfortunately, couldn’t attend the banquet, but heard great things about it. Was very surprised with the turn out and was great to meet some of the faces of our constituents that I hadn’t had the chance to meet prior. Congratulations goes out to our BIS and RIS winners. Were some very nice animals presented from all over this great nation, and some from Canada as well. I want to extend a very large thank you to the people that were able to come and support the club in their national show. As the club secretary for that club as well, it was nice to see such a great turnout. Our memberships have been remaining stable and have risen some since the chaos of Covid seems to be subsiding some. Goes to show that through even the hardest times our members prove to be a great group of people to work with, and the friendships gained from this wonderful breed of rabbits are irreplaceable. Board Elections The positions up for election this year are District Directors in even-numbered districts, Secretary, and Vice President. To be considered, candidates submitted their biographies, nomination petitions, and photos by May 15. We have updated the district members information with the club secretary so that information can be effectively sent to you when needed. A little information about myself. I have been married to my husband this year for 30 years. My daughter Lindsay raises the Woolies and I help her. This has been a wonderful 10 years for the two of us. When Lindsay was little, we had polish for a few years. She showed 4-H, and in a few ARBA shows. The kids got busy with many other endeavors and we let the rabbits go. About 10 years ago, Lindsay came to me and said she wanted to get back into rabbits as she really had a fun time with the people. Of course, I had a Jersey Wooly pet when the kids had polish, and he lived for 11 years. When she said she wanted back in I said she could if she did Jersey Woolies. I had no idea the places it would take us. We have had some wonderful times together going to and from shows. Hi there! I am Alexandra Williams and I am running for the Secretary position. I have been a member of the National Jersey Woolly Club for about twelve years. I am currently the local Rabbit club show secretary and have in the past held the position for a local riding club. As your club secretary I hope to modernize our way of communication. I would be reaching out to our club district representatives monthly with an updated list of members that need to be renewed. As for the new members that join, I would directly reach out to them to make sure they have all the information they may need in order to contact their district representative. I have decided to throw my hat in the ring for District 4 director. I’ve District 4 raised and shown Jersey Woolies for 10+ years. I started raising them when I was about 9 years old in my hometown Celina, TX. I will say I have learned and understand the struggle we as southern Jersey Wooly breeders endure raising this wonderful breed. I have had both climate controlled and outside open-air barns, and they both have their upsides and downsides when it comes to the Jersey Wooly breed. I have predominantly focused on Agoutis over the years ,but that doesn’t mean I haven’t taken interest in some of our other color groups. I currently have a herd of about 40 breeding animals with half that being composed mainly of Agoutis, the other half consisting of a small Shaded and Pointed White breeding program along with a program of chocolate-based animals. I do my best to promote the Jersey Wooly breed as it is. I have seen the steep decline in youth exhibitors both in our district and in our club as a whole. The decline in youth exhibitors is something I would like to fix. I believe that if we made knowledge more abundant and available to new exhibitors it would help them begin with a solid start. Some things I would like to implement at shows is having a small booth or table promoting the breed and having some animals on display. I feel that if we can get people to put their hands on a Jersey Wooly ,and explain that well bred animals do not have high maintenance coats we could generate interest. I think that the foundation to a good breeding program is to know basic genetics when it comes to different groups and varieties in our breed. I would like to help youth learn basic color genetics ,because I feel once you add all those possibilities, that it will help keep the interest of our new exhibitors. As some of you in the district may know, I recently moved this past year to Ada, Oklahoma in pursuit of more space to raise more Jersey Woolies along with some of my other breeds. I currently have open-aired barns up here due to the heat not getting as extreme as it is in Texas. I think the biggest issue in the district is that there is not an abundance of shows for youth exhibitors to be able to commute to and from. I consistently travel to Texas to show my animals ,and I very much enjoy making the drive down there. However I did not realize the issues that the other states in our district had till I moved out of Texas. Moving up to Oklahoma which has little to no infrastructure for rabbit shows has made me realize the difficulty that this state and some of our other states in our district have gaining youth exhibitors. I work to educate area Ag Teachers and students raise rabbits as a home project. I want to work on promoting Jersey Woolies in District 4. The

Members of the Njwrc; Hello, my name is Douglas Brown. I have been your active secretary for the last five years. I am looking to change things up a little this time and am looking to run for the position of Vice President. I would greatly appreciate your consideration.

A little about myself. My wife, Stacy, and I have been raising woolies for just over nine years at this point. But I have experience with rabbits for much longer than that. Rabbits have played an important role in my life for many years, thirty plus to be exact. But when we received our first wooly as a wedding present that clinched it and that is where my heart has been ever since. We currently run a forty-hole rabbitry in west central Wisconsin. I have experience being on a board of directors. Not only with the national club as your acting secretary. I am also the secretary of our regional club, the GPJWRC. Also, I was President and past president of our county 4h and have been involved in many aspects of that for many years. If elected my main goal would be to reach out the youth of this breed and try to get as much input from them as possible. Because I have always said, and will continue to say, that the youth is the future of our breed. Promoting this wonderful breed is what is needed to keep the passion going amongst all of those involved. I’m Kirsten Taylor, I started showing rabbits specifically Jersey Woolies in 2019 and have been hooked ever since thanks to Heike Cooley. I’m currently youth advisor for Louisiana Rabbit Breeders association and my Husband is Vice President. I am running for district 6 representative because woolies are what I call my heart breed of . It was my first and it will be the one that never leaves our barn. We travel quite frequently trying to make every show that we can possibly can. My family and I are always looking for more ways to get involved with our breed clubs and ARBA. I feel I can bring a fresh pair of eyes and words to district 6 article for the fluff to share our achievements in the south.

Lisa Anne Smith
4/19/1962-5/7/2022
May 7, 2022 an intelligent, spirited and beautiful.. woman's brightly shining light unexpectedly went dark. Many of you may not know who Lisa Smith was, but she was an instrumental part of raising the Jersey Wooly from a fledgling new breed to a breed forced to be recognized as a competitor among top breeds. In the mid 90s, Lisa first appeared on the national scene, soon becoming both District 8 director and a breeder to be reckoned with. In 1997 and 1998, Lisa's rabbits won the coveted Best of Breed at the ARBA convention and in 2000 won Best of Breed at Nationals. In particular, I remember Jack, a beautiful white rabbit who was just stunning and if memory serves me correctly, won twice. She may have more major winnings after that time, but I had stepped away from breeding for several years, so have no record. But, I believe it was Lisa's service on the Board, from those first days in the 90s through the early 21st century, that may have made its most indelible mark on our club. Those were years, that the NJWRC experienced some severe growing pains. In 1996, my second year as President, Lisa won the Vice Presidential office and I could not have asked for a better right hand gal. Her knowledge of Robert's Rules of Order and her business experience helped us navigate through some very rough waters. All the while, Lisa's sense of humor and love of a good time, endeared her in many hearts, particularly mine.

Towards the end of 1998 she stepped into the position of President when Brian Caudill resigned to pursue his education, and held that office into the early 2000s. Lisa worked hard to bring to fruition changes that elevated the club, including a revamping of the guidebook, improvements in the Constitution, improving the quality of our sweepstakes and national awards, and most importantly, overseeing improvements in the club's finances to achieve those positive gains. After many years, Lisa stepped away from rabbits to concentrate on other endeavors, including the one she loved most of all, that of wife to Bryan and mother of Rachel, David, and Caitlin, but her presence still showed up on occasion, as she chimed in on the JW Facebook groups from time to time. With her red hair, fabulous laugh, joyfulness and quick wit, I will always remember her as a firecracker burning bright. Unfortunately, like a firecracker, her light burnt out much too quickly. My adoration of Jersey woolies began with the most adorable little baby I ever saw, CB’s Little Treasure who was given to me with her mother and sister, by Illinois breeder, Joni Cravens in 2017 in exchange for one of my American Fuzzy lops. I had never seen pointed white babies and my heart was stolen from that moment. Little Treasure got DQed in her junior class at 2017 Indy Convention because newbie me trimmed the color off her toenails, but she went on to show beautifully as a senior and I was proud to later register and grand her. At 2017 convention McK’s Kirk came to me from Crystal Clack. He showed well for me and I granded him. These beauties and some lovely AOVs from Gayle Beirau became the basis of the AOV woolies who compete with my AFLs for space in my “barn”. I am very grateful to the generous breeders who helped me get started in woolies. I came to Nationals this year hoping to earn a few legs and help others earn legs by entering my youngsters. I was crossing my fingers that KP who had won BOSG at Louisville Convention might win group since she’d finally come out of a winter molt. I was thrilled that she won group and overwhelmed when she won breed against so many beautiful woolies. It was truly an honor. She must have had that special glow of a pregnant mother because now she is just hours away from finally kindling her first litter. Best wishes and full nest boxes for all, ~Helene Achgill

Mark this National BOSB off my bucket list! There were SO MANY Brokens entered at Nationals. I had no hopes as Encino only wore half a coat at Stillwater, but he has PRESENCE…. A look, an attitude, a confidence, a great natural pose that usually catches the eye of most judges. He won his Sr Class! OK…. Then he won BOSG! Then my heart started racing when the judges pulled Encino out many times for BOB/BOSB. Thank you, Michael Wolfe, for letting me yank on your sleeve when that BOSB rosette was placed. Thank you to the judges, Melissa Magee and Shane Ringdahl for recognizing Encino.

It has been a challenge to get him to produce brokens with enough showable color. Michaeline Marie (CA) encouraged me to “think outside the box.” Knowing he has the coat, type, head/ear…. I breed him to BUDs (Big Ugly Does) that carry a high count of pattern modifiers, regardless of color. I breed Broken x Broken to get a culmination of the pattern modifiers carried by both parents. Getting at least ONE showable Broken is my goal. If the son/daughter pass the first evaluations, then I shave off the junior coat and wait and wait for 8-9 months to see if the offspring will carry Encino’s traits. Luckily, I have a pet market for those culled from the program. Success is fleeting, but Encino has produced an outstanding broken black otter son, Kathy’s Zephyr TX owned by Autumn Marie Williams (TX), that I think is an improvement over his sire. It takes about eight-ten months for this line to complete maturity. I am currently growing out a son, daughter, and several grandchildren out of Encino…… one I hope to contribute to the Raffle Trio at Reno.
