HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
A
s we move into November, we’re finally seeing the leaves begin to change, and it’s time to gear up for Thanksgiving and the magic of the holiday season.
I usually travel in December, and one of the things I enjoy most is seeing how people around the world celebrate. Last year, I visited Vietnam, a country rich in culture, history and incredible food. Fortunately, we have some wonderful Vietnamese restaurants right here in South Jersey. In this issue, we bring those experiences together, sharing a taste of Vietnam and introducing you to some local dining experiences you may not have discovered yet. In our A True Jersey Boy feature, we catch up with Jersey Boy Tom Bentey, a local writer, director and actor whose film, available on Prime Video, captures the spirit of summers at the Shore. It’s a story many of us can relate to. As always, we have a great lineup of features, including art, health and wellness, wine and personal finance. Along with our dining, travel and lifestyle coverage, there’s plenty to enjoy as we wrap up another year of New Jersey Lifestyle. And what’s the holiday season without a little sparkle? We’re raising a glass to Roberts Fine Jewelers as they celebrate their 25th anniversary. We speak with new owner Tom Prete about the business, its history and what’s ahead.

raditionally, a 25th anniversary gift is usually something silver — an element representing sophistication, glamor, and prosperity. How appropriate that Roberts Fine Jewelers is celebrating their quartercentury in business, adorning women and men with stylish and classic jewelry. Whether shopping for that special Simon G engagement ring or a classic Rolex watch, Roberts has become synonymous with a treasure chest of quality jewelry.
In addition to the stunning selection, the staff at Roberts prides themselves on their oneon-one customer service.

In addition to the stunning selection, the staff at Roberts prides themselves on their one-on-one customer service. Lisa A. Celia, General Manager, explains how putting the customer first has been their mantra since 2001: “As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we are especially grateful for the loyalty and support of our local customers and the relationships we built over the years. Being part of this community means so much to us, and we look forward to continuing to grow and serve our customers and community for many more years to come.” Passing the Baton Officially, the transition from Bob Rovinsky, original owner, to Thomas Prete took place on February 7, 2025. However, the relationship between the two men began much earlier. They quickly moved from being business associates to developing a strong NJLifestyleMag.com

personal relationship built on trust and mutual respect. Both men shared a passion for the jewelry business and a vision for the future of Roberts. Like links on a bracelet, that strong connection led to a deal where Prete took over the business. Celia feels Roberts has “…worked hard to make the transition seamless and ensure that the personal service our customers have come to expect remains at the heart of the store.” Customers continue to see familiar faces as well as new team members, including an in-house jeweler who provides an even greater level of personal service — repairs, custom work, and expert craftsmanship. In addition, Roberts offers cashfor-gold services and professional appraisals with their GIA-certified appraiser.
“We have stayed true to many of the things our customers have loved over the years, including the personal, welcoming shopping experience they’ve come to expect,” says Lisa Celia.
As for the customer experience itself, Celia emphasizes the team’s goal to attend to their customers: “We have stayed true to many of the things our customers have loved over the years, including the personal, welcoming shopping experience they’ve come to expect. Our goal is to build on the store’s strong history while bringing new 14

A ROOM FULL OF POSSIBILITIES This holiday season, think beyond gifts that come in a box. For one Margate family, the ultimate gift was a beautifully designed space where children can play, imagine and grow. Gold Marked Studio transformed an ordinary room into a playful, multifunctional retreat that brings the spirit of the beach indoors while seamlessly doubling as a guest room — proving that the best gifts are often the spaces where lasting memories are made.
I
t’s the gift-giving season, but sometimes the best gifts don’t come wrapped in paper and tied with a pretty bow. Gifts that make the greatest impact are those that inspire, create memories, and continue to bring joy long after the holiday season has passed. And sometimes, the most meaningful gifts aren’t things at all, but the spaces where memories are made.
To accomplish this, every project at Gold Marked Studio begins with one question: How do our clients want to live? “Rather than designing around passing trends, we strive to create interiors that reflect each client’s personality and lifestyle. The result is spaces that not only feel authentic, but most importantly, serve the clients’ needs,” says Juliana Herman, co-founder.
For a family in Margate, Marissa Markus and Juliana Herman of Gold Marked Studio brought their vision for the ultimate playroom to life — creating the kind of space that keeps on giving, with room to play, imagine, and grow for years to come. “We believe that your home should tell your story. Great design should enhance the way people live. Our work blends unexpected materials, thoughtful details, and a strong sense of storytelling to create interiors that are as functional as they are visually distinctive,” says Marissa Markus, co-founder of Gold Marked Studios.
Their beachfront clients came to Gold Marked Studios with a request to create a playroom that brings the excitement of an outdoor playground inside, but it has to look good. Oh, and they wanted the playroom to double as a guest room and be able to grow and evolve with the family. While that might seem like an impossible ask, it’s exactly the sort of project Gold Marked Studio loves. “Rather than creating a literal beach-themed space, we looked to the overall feeling of the shoreline to inspire every design decision,”

Herman says. The custom indoor play structure, featuring equipment by Smart Playrooms, a custom mural by Moth Paper, and constructed by DL Miner, was designed to encourage movement, imagination and exploration. A rock-climbing wall, monkey bars, climbing rope, and foam cube pit bring the fun of a playground indoors, while durable cork flooring provides a soft surface underfoot and can stand up to sandy, wet feet after a day at the beach. The room also does double duty as a guest space. A concealed Murphy bed allows the playroom to easily transform into a comfortable guest room when family and friends come to visit, making the space as practical as it is playful. “At the end of the day, this is your home — Usability and comfort should be paramount to the design. Those are the spaces you want to come back to,” Markus says.

he best phrase to learn when visiting Vietnam is Cảm ơn — Thank you. From the moment you land in Ho Chi Minh City, you feel welcome. After checking into your hotel and sampling your first, but certainly not last, cup of Vietnamese coffee, you are surrounded by friendly staff who are always glad to feed you, drive you, and greet you with a big Xin chào! You also better be prepared to thank the culinary geniuses all over the city preparing unforgettable meals like hefty bowls of Pho and other delish street food. Author Viet Thanh Nguyen sums up the friendly feeling that his native country offers travelers, “Nothing is ever so expensive as what is offered for free — and in Vietnam, that generosity is in the eyes, the gestures, and the willingness to share your world.” And sharing their world is the key to making
a visit to Vietnam so memorable. There is much to see, taste, and experience. To get a sampling — an appetizer if you will — let’s check out one of her major cities — Ho Chi Minh City. In the City Once known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is home to more than 14 million people — the largest city in the country. And it’s going to feel like you are dodging at least that many motorbikes and taxis whizzing around the city day and night. New Jersey Lifestyle’s own Nick Valinote survived the organized chaos on a recent visit — loving every minute. “First thing you notice is the traffic — motorbikes everywhere you turn! Cars, people, and bikes weaving in and out. After a bit of maneuvering, we were all able to cross through a sea of cars together — there’s safety in numbers.”

Once you get your feel for the city, start exploring the different types of architecture that define the city’s history. Whether on a walking tour or motorbike (if you dare), visit the Notre Dame Cathedral, Saigon Post Office, and the Reunification Palace to see French Colonial influence. Vietnam War history buffs will no doubt want to take in the military equipment displayed at the War Remnants Museum. In addition, the 124 miles of Cu Chi Tunnels offer a unique experience, as in actually crawling through tunnels built by the Viet Cong during the war. For a more modern feel, head up to the 49th floor of the Bitexco Tower for spectacular 360-degree panoramic views of the city skyline, its rivers, and landmarks. Ready for shopping? The Ben Thanh Market offers 1,500 booths selling just about anything you can think of — and then some. From local foods and crafts to traditional conical hats and souvenirs — all under one roof. For more high-end shopping, continue on to Dong Khoi Street for some chic cafes and opportunities to purchase designer brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Rolex — at full price! Outside the City After the hustle and bustle of the city, a river boat ride on the Mekong Delta River offers a serene and different experience. On the two-hour scenic drive from Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho, you drive by endless rice paddy fields that give you a true feel of the Vietnamese countryside and its people. Once in My Tho, your river journey begins. The motorboat cruise winds along the river as you pass by small islands full of rich and colorful flora, plantations, bee farms, and orchards. Another way to experience the Mekong Delta is by Sampan — a flat-bottomed boat with an open wooden hull and covered with a bamboo roof. It’s quite an experience to cruise the river in hand-rowed sampans navigating narrow tributaries where motorboats cannot reach. For an overnight luxury cruise, 28

Song Xanh Sampan offers multi-day private cabin trips visiting rural towns and floating markets. City Food Although you can find many types of food in Ho Chi Minh City, from Italian to Indian, you may want to concentrate on local cuisine. And, in many cases, street food is the way to go. Based on his recent trip to Vietnam, Gary Gilbert, a seeker of out-of-the-ordinary travel, sums up the delicious food vibe he experienced: “My favorites were the street food vendors and the inexpensive restaurants. We ordered family style, and it was a total feeding frenzy. Dishes, with plenty of dips and sauces, kept coming to the table to be eaten as quickly as they arrived. And the prices were crazy-crazy low.” Some familiar and must-sample options include Cơm tấm — broken rice usually served with grilled pork, fried egg, and pickled vegetables topped with a sweet fish sauce. Bánh mì, another popular street food, is Vietnam’s version of a baguette sandwich. The bread is light but crispy on the outside and layered with pork or chicken, radish, and carrots. To really bring out the flavor, go bold and drizzle with hot chili sauce! Last, but certainly not least, a steaming bowl of Phở — noodle soup — is probably one of Vietnam’s most popular meals.

THE HOLIDAY HOST’S CHEAT SHEET Three Bottles That Save the Season
F
irst, the report cards. In the fall issue, I assigned homework: pour one fall varietal with a real fall meal and tell me how it went. You did not disappoint. My favorite submission came from Sarah Hoist, who took on the Cabernet Franc challenge with the 2022 Domaine Fabrice Gasnier “Vieilles Vignes” Chinon and paired it with a roast. Her one-word review: “comfort.” That is exactly what a great fall pairing should feel like, and I could not have said it better myself. Sarah, stop by the store; there is a bottle with your name on it. Now, on to the most wonderful (and most stressful) time of the year. Between now and New Year’s Day, you will host, toast, gift, and be gifted more wine than in any other stretch of the calendar. The good news? You do not need a cellar full of bottles to pull it off. You need three: one for the toast, one for the feast, and one for the fireside. Here is your cheat sheet. 1. The Toast: Sparkling Wine Every great holiday gathering begins with a pop — or, if you want to impress, a sigh. Here is a party trick: hold the cork firmly, tilt the bottle at 45 degrees, and twist the bottle, not the cork. Done right, it opens with a gentle hiss instead of a ceiling dent. That matters, because the pressure inside a bottle of sparkling wine is roughly three times that of your car tire. Champagne, the genuine article, comes only from the Champagne region of France, and it is worth every penny. But some of the smartest buys on our shelves are its cousins. France’s Crémant wines are made by the same traditional method as Champagne, just in other regions, and often for a fraction of the price. My pick this season is the Barmes Buecher Crémant d’Alsace ($39), from a family estate in France’s Alsace region that farms biodynamically and makes bubbles with real finesse. One more tip: sparkling wine is not just for midnight. It is one of the most food-friendly wines on earth, brilliant with anything fried, salty, or creamy. Latkes and Crémant? Trust me. 2. The Feast: Cabernet Sauvignon When the prime rib, beef tenderloin, or crown roast hits the table, it is time for the heavyweight. Cabernet Sauvignon is the undisputed king of the holiday roast, and there is real science behind it. Cabernet’s firm tannins (that pleasant, mouth-drying grip) bind with the fat and protein in red meat. The meat softens the wine, the wine cuts the richness of the meat, and every bite makes the next sip taste better. It is the most satisfying partnership at the holiday table, and it

starts far fewer family arguments than politics. The bottle I want at the head of my table this year is the 2023 Hourglass HG III Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley ($59) — plush, polished Napa Cabernet from a family-owned winery that consistently punches above its weight. Pro tip: open it an hour before dinner, or pour it into a decanter. A big Cabernet, like most of us at a holiday party, opens up once it has had a chance to breathe. 3. The Fireside: Port The dishes are done, the kids are asleep (or at least pretending), and the fire is crackling. This is Port’s moment. This fortified wine from Portugal’s Douro Valley is rich, warming, and practically designed for December. There are two main styles to know: Ruby Port, bursting with dark berry fruit and a natural match for chocolate, and Tawny Port, aged in wood for flavors of caramel, toasted nuts, and dried fig — a dream with pecan pie or aged cheddar. Here is the best part for hosts: an opened bottle of Tawny keeps for weeks, so one bottle carries you from Christmas Eve to New Year’s. My pick is Graham’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port ($76), from one of the most celebrated houses in Port’s history. It also happens to make one of the most elegant hostess gifts you can bring. Your Homework: The New Year’s Bubble Challenge Class is back in session, and this assignment is a party. This New Year’s Eve, put two sparkling wines head-to-head: one Champagne and one non-Champagne (a Crémant, Cava, or Prosecco). Cover the labels, pour them blind for your guests, and let everyone vote. Then email me at Michael@passionvines.com with what you poured, which one won, and the most surprising reaction in the room. The best report gets featured in the spring issue, along with a bottle I pull for you personally. Bonus points for photos of your blind-tasting setup. here’s no doubt that Tom Bentey is a Jersey boy — through and through. In fact, he has seen Bruce Springsteen at least 30 times — that’s some valuable NJ street cred! Bentey, raised in the Garden State, a graduate of Rutgers University, and a writer, podcaster, director, and actor, draws constantly from his muse — the Jersey Shore. Whatever he is creating, Bentey stays true to the sand in his shoes and salt water in his veins. In 2012, he wrote, directed, and starred in his debut feature film, “At the Jersey Shore.” Capturing a summer of Boardwalk life teeming with love, lust, and longing, the film received international distribution after several screenings, including the Jersey Shore Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film. Since his first steps into the movie industry, Bentey has been busy acting in television, including “The Equalizer” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” as well as a variety of movies. He also continues to write and host a podcast show. So, let’s relax on a comfy beach chair, sip an umbrella-topped drink, and get to know Tom Bentey a little better.

NJL: Were you a ham as a kid? Do you remember how you got the acting bug? TB: Yes, I was a big ham — and I still am! I always had a strong interest in acting, but I didn’t seriously pursue it until college. Around the same time, I discovered my love for writing, and I’ve been passionate about both ever since. What keeps bringing me back is the challenge. With acting and writing, there’s never one truly “perfect” or “right” outcome, and that constant opportunity to explore, improve, and make new choices is what I love about them.

NJL: Where did the inspiration for At the Jersey Shore come from? Is it autobiographical? TB: At the Jersey Shore was my thesis film for my M.A. in Media Studies at The New School. While the film is about a real place and inspired by real characters, unlike the character I play, I’ve always loved — and will always love — the Jersey Shore. It’s a part of who I am, both as a person and as an artist. Watching the film today, so many years later, there are definitely moments that make me cringe a little, but I’m proud of it. More than anything, I feel like I truly captured what a summer at the Jersey Shore is all about. NJL: Why is the Jersey Shore so important to you? TB: There’s nowhere else in the world I’d rather be during the summer than the Jersey Shore. It’s truly a special place, and the summer goes by so fast — “it’s like it doesn’t even happen,” which is actually a great line from the film! I always tell people, “Please don’t ask me to leave the Shore during the summer unless you’re paying me.” That pretty much sums up how I feel about it!

NJL: How does your love for the Jersey Shore manifest itself in your movies and other work? TB: I love filming on location, and New Jersey has such a diverse landscape and culture that the locations themselves really become part of any production I shoot here. With my new TV series, The Cafone, we filmed at Moore’s Tavern in Freehold and Marina Grille in Belmar, and both locations brought their own personality and aesthetic to the production. They didn’t just serve as backdrops — they helped give the series an authentic New Jersey feel. NJL: Tell us a bit about your current television pilot, The Cafone, and how it came to be? TB: My uncle originally had the idea for The Cafone: a guy reconnects with an old friend and tries to start

THE FUTURE OF YOUR HEALTH SIX MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS TO WATCH IN 2027
Medicine is entering a remarkable new era — one in which earlier detection, personalized treatments and technology are changing how we understand health and disease. From blood tests that can reveal signs of Alzheimer’s to wearable devices that provide deeper insight into metabolism and emerging therapies designed around an individual’s biology, the possibilities are expanding rapidly. Here are six developments shaping the future of medicine — and what you need to know about each.

A
blood test may now help a specialist determine whether Alzheimer-related changes are present in the brain. Wearable sensors can track not only glucose but ketones as well. Researchers are even designing cancer vaccines around the unique genetic fingerprint of a patient’s tumor. What sounded like science fiction only a few years ago is beginning to enter clinical medicine. The larger shift is even more important: medicine is moving from reacting to disease toward earlier detection, prevention, more precise treatment, and preserving function for longer. As 2027 approaches, these are six developments worth watching and what patients need to understand about each one. 1. Alzheimer’s Disease Is Moving Closer to a Blood Test The new Alzheimer blood tests can help with diagnosis. They look for patterns of proteins linked to Alzheimer-related changes in the brain, giving doctors a simpler alternative to a PET scan or spinal tap when someone is already having memory or thinking problems (FDA, 2025). There is an important catch. The test is intended for adults age 50 or older who already have memory or thinking symptoms and are being evaluated for Alzheimer disease, not for healthy people without symptoms. It is one piece of the picture, and the result must be weighed alongside a complete clinical evaluation rather than read in isolation. 2 Menopause Medicine Is Being Rewritten What changed? In February 2026, the FDA removed the strongest boxed warnings about cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, and probable dementia from an initial group of menopausal hormone therapy products. This does not mean hormone therapy is risk-free. The boxed warning regarding endometrial cancer remains for systemic estrogen-only products used in women who still have a uterus. The change reflects a more individualized, timing-based understanding of who may benefit and how treatment should be selected (FDA, 2026). For healthy women without contraindications, the first 10 years after menopause — or generally before age 60 — are often described as a “window of opportunity,” when the benefit-risk balance of hormone therapy is most favorable. This is not an expiration date: women who are older or further from menopause may still be appropriate candidates depending on their symptoms, medical history, treatment goals, and individualized risk assessment.
42
Holiday 2026 | LIFESTYLE
NJLifestyleMag.com
In my practice, I begin with a comprehensive assessment of symptoms, medical and family history, cardiovascular, breast, and bone health, laboratory results, and personal goals. When hormone therapy is appropriate, I generally favor an individualized regimen using FDA-approved bioidentical estradiol and, for women with a uterus, micronized progesterone. For women who cannot or prefer not to use hormones, FDAapproved nonhormonal treatments such as fezolinetant and elinzanetant offer additional options. In my practice, I also prescribe testosterone for carefully selected postmenopausal women with distressing hypoactive sexual desire disorder. Although no testosterone formulation is currently FDAapproved specifically for women in the United States, clinical data support its use for this indication at physiologic female doses with appropriate monitoring. The goal is not hormones for everyone or hormones for no one, but precise care for the individual woman (Parish et al., 2021). At Nutriamed, menopause care extends beyond hormone prescriptions to muscle preservation, nutrition and gut health, vaginal and urinary health, sexual wellness, and the emerging role of the gut and vaginal microbiomes. Proven therapies, including vaginal estrogen or vaginal DHEA when appropriate, remain central, while probiotics and other microbiome-directed therapies are considered thoughtfully as the evidence evolves. 3. The Next Generation of Metabolic Medicine The more meaningful question is no longer simply, ‘How much weight was lost?’ We should also ask what happened
to blood pressure, glucose, visceral fat, liver health, strength, and lean mass. This is the approach we use in metabolic optimization at Nutriamed: medical treatment is combined with nutrition, body-composition monitoring, laboratory follow-up, and muscle-focused exercise. Losing weight is not enough if a patient is also losing excessive muscle or becoming metabolically weaker. One drug, three targets. Semaglutide acts on GLP-1, while tirzepatide acts on GLP-1 and GIP. The next step is retatrutide, an investigational triple agonist that also targets the glucagon receptor. GLP-1 helps regulate appetite, GIP supports the insulin response, and glucagon influences energy use. Retatrutide is being studied as a once-weekly treatment for obesity and type 2 diabetes, as well as obesity-related conditions including sleep apnea and knee osteoarthritis (Giblin et al., 2026). In a phase 2 study, the highest dose produced an average weight reduction of approximately 24 percent after 48 weeks (Jastreboff et al., NEJM, 2023). Retatrutide is still experimental and is not FDA-approved. Its long-term benefits and safety continue to be studied. As with other medications in this family, gastrointestinal effects are common, and preserving muscle through adequate nutrition and resistance training remains essential as weight comes off. 4. Wearables Are Becoming Medical Devices Wearable technology is moving beyond step counts and sleep scores. Over-the-counter continuous glucose monitors now allow many adults who do not use insulin to see how meals, exercise, sleep, and stress affect their glucose patterns. In selected patients, I use this information to identify patterns and guide metabolic care, but the numbers need clinical context. The next advance will not be simply collecting more data. It will be integrating wearable readings with laboratory results, medications, body composition, and progress over time in one useful clinical record. In 2026, the FDA also authorized the first wearable system that continuously monitors both glucose and ketones for people with diabetes. This could help identify rising ketones before diabetic ketoacidosis becomes a medical emergency. More information, however, does not automatically create better health. Without interpretation, wearable data can create anxiety, unnecessary restriction, or false reassurance. 5. The Immune System Is Becoming Programmable Some of the most exciting research in medicine involves teaching the immune system to recognize disease more precisely. Personalized cancer vaccines are created by analyzing an individual tumor, identifying its unique mutations, and training immune cells to target them. Small early trials in kidney and pancreatic cancer have produced encouraging immune responses, although larger studies are needed before these vaccines become routine treatment. Scientists are also exploring whether CAR T cells, immune cells engineered to attack a specific target, can be created inside the body rather than removed, modified in a laboratory, and returned to the patient. Early laboratory and animal research suggests this might eventually make cell therapy more accessible for certain cancers and autoimmune diseases. It is a remarkable idea, but it remains experimental. 6. Peptides Are Promising but Proof Still Matters Peptides have become one of the most heavily marketed trends in longevity and recovery. The term itself can be misleading: many established medications, including insulin and several GLP-1 therapies, are peptides. The concern is with unapproved compounds promoted for injury healing, fat loss, muscle growth, sleep, or anti-aging when the claims extend far beyond the available human evidence.

LIFESTYLE | Holiday 2026
43
Health Watch In 2026, FDA advisers considered whether several popular peptides, including BPC-157, TB-500, KPV, and MOTS-c, should be eligible for broader pharmacy compounding. That is not the same as FDA approval. Compounded products do not undergo the FDA’s standard premarket review for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality, and the agency has identified limited safety information and potential concerns for several of these substances. I am interested in the future of peptide medicine, but safety comes first. Before recommending any of these therapies, I want to see meaningful human data, reliable manufacturing, appropriate dosing, and a clear understanding of the risks. The Most Important Advance The most important change in medicine may not be any single drug or device. It is the movement toward earlier detection, a greater focus on prevention, and precision medicine that matches treatment more closely to the individual. For patients, this is exciting, but it also requires judgment. Before pursuing a new therapy, ask whether it is approved, what evidence supports it, whether the research applies to someone like you, and what is still unknown.

CRACKPOT REALISM: Jim Brossy Beyond the Canvas
Philadelphia artist Jim Brossy challenges our traditional understanding of painting, transforming the canvas into something far more tactile, dimensional, and unexpected. Through his signature “Crackpot Realism,” Brossy combines unconventional materials, bold textures, humor, and social commentary to create works that blur the line between painting and sculpture.

hat happens when a painting refuses to remain a painting? Instead, it breaks all the rules by stretching beyond the surface and outside the boundaries. Is it still a painting when nontraditional materials are sculpted with layers, protrude, crack, overlap, and even collide with each other? Philadelphia artist Jim Brossy is known for his collection of wildly expressive, highly textured mixed-media assemblage paintings that incorporate both traditional art materials and industrial elements. Tar, latex, cement, wax, string, and steel appear alongside acrylic, pastel, pencil, and oil, creating surfaces that carry both a literal and figurative gravity to the subjects.
Grandma
Brossy created the term Crackpot Realism, which, according to him, offers a new perspective using a variety of materials involving relationships concerned with social relevance and emotional experiences. In Crackpot Realism, there is no distinction between living and making art. Painting is not a representation of life, but a real thing, an object in real space, that can be experienced as a picture. Crackpot Realism allows for interaction between physical materials and mental associations. Some materials allow for spontaneity and immediacy, while others are slow, laborious, and resistant. Each carries its own distinct sensibility. These materials generate rhythms and patterns that respond to the same natural forces that shape the world around us. Assemblage and collage are incorporated to highlight the qualities of each material, rather than to replace traditional painted or drawn elements. Text is used as both a visual and a political statement. Through the combination of image and the written word, the paintings invite viewers to engage with them on multiple levels of interpretation. Crackpot Realism allows for interaction between physical materials and mental associations; viewers can experience a fresh new look with an unconventional perspective.

Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and raised in Edison, Jim Brossy relocated to Philadelphia in 1981, where he continues to live and work. His studio, now located in a new space attached to his home, is where he develops ideas and works closely with his materials. Brossy received a Bachelor of Arts in
Art
Visual Art from Livingston College at Rutgers University in 1979 and later earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1999. His education and years of studio experience shape the depth and structure of his work. For Brossy, the work is not simply a representation of life but an object in a real space that can be experienced as a picture. With a distinctly urban visual language, the artworks engage contemporary social issues and injustices. Figures often emerge in materials reflective of their social status, a deliberate decision that strengthens the relationship between subject and substance. “Sassy” political references introduce both seriousness and humor, encouraging viewers to consider broader social concerns without becoming overwhelmed by them. The artist invites reflection but also insists that neither the viewer nor the work take itself too seriously. Process plays a central role in the exhibition. Brossy describes being drawn either to subjects directly in front of him or to distant memories triggered by current events. Patterns and geometry found within everyday objects become starting points, and careful attention is given to how materials relate and respond to one another. Ultimately, the works are built through a process of layering planes from back to front, mirroring what he describes as the structure of the universe itself. Each painting becomes both a constructed environment and visual narrative, inviting viewers to engage with it as a physical presence as much as an image. Brossy makes paintings with the weight of the world in them, sometimes literally. The materiality of his work gives the surface physical gravity while the themes of humor, memory, and social tension create psychological weight. n

here is something unique about Vietnamese cuisine. Flavors are diverse and lively, and the ingredients are fresh and crisp. Typical options include banh mi (crusty bread sandwich), spring rolls (fresh or fried), and the one and only pho — a hefty bowl of noodles, veggies, a variety of meat options, and flavor galore. In addition to taste, Vietnamese cuisine simmers, if you will, in traditional Eastern medicine and philosophy — yin and yang in a soup pot. To properly prepare pho, balance guides the recipe — when sour is added, something sweet must complement it. Time and love are also essential ingredients. Carefully simmered for hours, and in some cases days, the base of the soup is generally made using beef or chicken bones along with other ingredients like flank steak, onion, ginger, and spices. What kind of spices? Lots — including star anise, roasted ginger, roasted onion, black cardamom, coriander seed, fennel seed, and cloves.
In addition to taste, Vietnamese cuisine simmers, if you will, in traditional Eastern medicine and philosophy. Once your bowl is served to you, customize your soup by choosing from a heaping plate full of interesting garnishes, including Thai basil, bean sprouts, Thai chili peppers, lime wedges, and hot chili sauce. It’s a must-do to boost the flavor to your liking. Locally, the Atlantic City area is lucky to have several options for Vietnamese cuisine — whether pho or other specialties. WHY BONDS ARE FALLING IN 2026
I
nvestors expect volatility in the stock market. It is something they accept when investing in stocks with the hope of achieving greater returns over time. Bonds, however, often serve a different purpose. They are generally intended to provide income, preserve capital, and help cushion the impact of stock market declines. But as investors learned in 2022, bonds are not immune to losses. In 2026, rising interest rates and renewed inflation concerns have put pressure on the bond market once again.
Rising yields can hurt existing bond portfolios, particularly those holding longer-term bonds. However, there is an important difference between today’s environment and the period leading up to 2022. When interest rates were exceptionally low, investors received relatively little income from their bonds. As rates rose sharply, they experienced losses while still collecting those lower yields. Today, higher yields offer new investors the opportunity to earn more income, even though existing bond prices may continue to fluctuate.
So, what is happening this time? And why can an investment traditionally considered one of the safer parts of a portfolio lose value when interest rates rise?
Does this mean investors should abandon bonds? Quite the opposite. Bonds can still play an important role in a diversified portfolio, particularly for retirees and those approaching retirement who may depend on their investments to help fund living expenses. Higher yields can make bonds more attractive, but investors must consider their time horizon, income needs, and tolerance for risk.
To understand what is happening, let’s look at a hypothetical example. Imagine you purchase a 10-year U.S. Treasury bond paying 4% interest annually. On a $1,000 investment, you receive $40 per year, and your original $1,000 is returned when the bond matures in 10 years, assuming the government meets its obligations. Now imagine that a year later, newly issued 10-year Treasury bonds pay 5% interest. Investors can earn $50 annually for every $1,000 invested in a new bond, compared with the $40 your bond pays. To make your bond attractive to buyers, its market price would have to fall. This illustrates a fundamental rule of bond investing: when interest rates rise, existing bond prices generally fall. When rates decline, bond prices generally rise. The challenge facing bond investors in 2026 is that the economic outlook remains uncertain. Inflation concerns, higher energy prices, and geopolitical tensions have complicated the outlook for interest rates. Meanwhile, concerns about government borrowing and the growing amount of debt that must be financed have also put pressure on longerterm Treasury yields. The Federal Reserve plays an important role, but it does not directly control every interest rate. Longer-term yields also reflect expectations for future inflation, economic growth, and the amount of compensation investors demand for lending money over extended periods. As a result, even if the Fed cuts short-term rates, longer-term bond yields can remain elevated or move higher.
Not all bonds carry the same risks. U.S. Treasury securities have very low credit risk but remain vulnerable to interest rate changes. Corporate bonds may pay higher yields but carry additional risk if a company struggles financially. Municipal bonds can be particularly relevant to New Jersey residents because their interest may offer federal and, in some cases, state tax advantages, depending on the bond and the investor’s circumstances. Where rates go from here is anyone’s guess. Persistent inflation could push yields higher, putting additional pressure on bond prices. Conversely, easing inflation or a weakening economy could cause yields to fall, potentially boosting bond prices. Neither outcome is guaranteed. The lesson from 2026 is not that bonds have stopped working. It is that they carry risks investors need to understand. Diversification does not eliminate losses, but maintaining an appropriate balance of stocks, bonds, and cash can help investors navigate uncertain markets. Rather than trying to predict every interest rate move, investors should build portfolios around their long-term financial goals and remember that even the most traditional investments deserve careful consideration. n
