Most of you have likely heard of the Boys & Girls Club, but may not know much about how it benefits our community. In this issue, we’re proud to introduce you to Tracey Triniwell, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City. I’ve known Tracey for a long time and have witnessed the incredible work being done at the Club. When you meet the boys and girls there, you immediately see the impact this investment has on our youth. I’m honored to share this inspiring feature, written by Felicia Niven, showcasing Tracey’s passion and dedication. Although summer is winding down, the good weather isn’t gone yet! We’re excited to introduce you to Prokan and their impressive line of outdoor kitchen and fire feature products. I’ve seen countless chefs on YouTube highlighting the innovative design and performance of their offerings, and we’re thrilled to bring them to your attention. Our travel feature this issue brings together two of my favorite things — nature and wine. The Finger Lakes region in central New York is a breathtaking area known for its eleven long, narrow glacial lakes. It’s a destination where natural beauty, rich history, wine, food, and culture intersect in the most unforgettable ways. Speaking of wine, Michael Bray shares his top picks for fall. And on that “note,” I’d like to invite you to The Right Notes wine event happening this October — one of the premier wine-tasting experiences in our region. Our fall art feature, by Michael Cagno, introduces us to Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, one of the most influential and provocative contemporary artists and activists of our time. His body of work spans sculpture, architecture, installation, photography, and film — often fusing traditional Chinese elements with bold political statements. In our dining spotlight, we feature local culinary legends, the Dougherty family. Since acquiring Linwood Country Club, they’ve made steady and impactful improvements — from creating the Fox Den to enhancing banquet offerings. Most recently, they’ve launched Shay’s, a fresh rebranding of the LCC restaurant with a more casual and welcoming vibe. Finally, on a personal note: as many of you know, I’ve supported Gilda’s Club (now Cancer Support Community New Jersey at Gilda’s Club) since they first arrived in Atlantic City nearly 25 years ago. While I’m not one to seek recognition, I’d like to invite you to an upcoming event honoring both myself and Lisa Johnson. The event will support this invaluable organization, and I hope you’ll save the date — November 6th — with more details to come. Wishing you all a joyful and fulfilling fall season! n

hen Tracey Triniwell walks through the doors of the Boys & Girls Club, it’s like a homecoming — and a celebrity sighting rolled into one. Children rush toward her, eager to share their artwork, their stories, their hugs. “Miss Tracey! Miss Tracey! Come see what I made!” they call out, pulling her in every direction. New faces linger on the sidelines at first, unsure — until they gather the courage to ask, “Can I have a hug too?” As CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City, Tracey Triniwell is clearly more than a leader in title. She’s a guiding light, a steady hand, and for some — especially the youngest — she’s a bit like a second mom. Tracey Triniwell (née Hyman) grew up in the Venice Park section of Atlantic City, where childhood was equal parts adventure and hustle. She and her friends played along the jetty, rode boats, fished off docks, and chased fireflies after dark. Always on the move, Tracey once earned money walking dogs — while cruising through the neighborhood on roller skates. She cheered, played basketball, sold ice cups, and ran errands for neighbors. That energy never faded — it just evolved. In high school, Tracey navigated two social circles: the Saint James Catholic school crowd in Ventnor and her closeknit hometown crew in Atlantic City. She once considered vocational school, drawn by her love of fashion design. But her guidance counselor, Michael Everett, had other plans. “He looked at my grades and said, ‘You’re not a Vo-tech student. You’re an honor student. What do you really want to do?’” she recalls. “I said I wanted to go to Howard University and major in accounting. He said, ‘Then let’s make your resume tell that story.’”

He wasn’t easy on her. He didn’t hand her opportunities — he made her chase them and own them. She juggled sports, work, and school with the focus of someone who had a point to prove. And to be clear, she did. “I wanted to show I could carry the load. That I could show up. That I was ready.” At Howard University, she found her voice. “Howard taught me how to walk into any room and know that I belong,” she says. She earned her degree in Business Administration. Then came the New York chapter — the proving ground. She joined PricewaterhouseCoopers in their Assurance & Advisory practice, a high-powered job in a high-stakes city. It was the early 2000s — the era of black or navy suits, closed-toe pumps, and unspoken rules. The boardrooms were filled with white men. And Tracey? She was young, Black, female, and ambitious. “It was cutthroat,” she says. “You either swam with the sharks or sank. So, I learned to swim.”

At the same time, life outside the boardroom was gaining momentum. In 2008, she moved to South Jersey, drawn by a high school friendship with Lawrence “Dink” Triniwell that had quietly grown into something more. For a while, she kept up the grind — commuting to New York City. Eventually, she made the switch to PwC’s Philadelphia office, where she discovered a passion for internal audit. That interest led her to a new opportunity at Lincoln Financial Group. Life slowly but surely began to center around South Jersey. Tracey accepted an invitation from Michael Everett to help with Champions of Youth, eager for the chance to mentor local teens. Around the same time, she decided to leave the long commute behind and take a local opportunity at AtlantiCare. “Healthcare NJLifestyleMag.com

was a culture shock,” she admits. “At first, I wasn’t sure if it was the right fit for me. I had to figure out how to make it work, to find my joy.” She found her footing by leaning into employee engagement, becoming deeply involved with the African American Employee Resource Group — and eventually stepping up as chair. Through that role, she rediscovered her voice, this time as an advocate and community-builder. Her leadership didn’t go unnoticed. She was asked to lead operations and finance for the maternal-fetal medicine practice — a fast-paced, high-stakes environment where the learning curve was steep, but the confidence others had in her proved well placed. In 2013, she earned her Master’s in Accountancy from Rutgers — a remarkable achievement considering she was working, planning a wedding, raising three children, and pregnant with her fourth at the time. That same year, she joined the board of the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City. They needed someone with financial and operational expertise, and she delivered — guiding the organization through more than a decade of fiscal challenges. Twelve years later, the Club turned to her once again — this time to lead as CEO. “I was floored,” she says. “It wasn’t something I had aspired to. But I looked around at where we were — and where we could go — and I knew I could make a difference.” She stepped into the role with a clear vision and a steady heartbeat: hope, safety, and storytelling. “Hope, because I’m a dreamer. And when you dream big, hope is your fuel,” she says. “Safety, because nothing happens without it. The kids have to feel secure before they can grow. And storytelling — that’s our truth. That’s how we connect. When we share our struggles, our journeys, we give someone else permission to believe.” 12

Under Tracey’s leadership, the Club has become a launchpad for possibility. It offers culinary arts, STEAM labs, music studios, and mentorship programs. Tracey is at the center of it all — highfiving kids, inspiring staff, and inviting donors to coffee to share her vision firsthand. “I always say, come see what we’re doing,” she says. “Come feel the energy in the room.”

But sustaining that energy — and expanding the opportunities — takes more than heart. It takes partnership. “Government funding isn’t always guaranteed,” Tracey explains. “Sometimes it’s paused or redirected, and that puts our kids and programs at risk.” That’s why community support is essential. Private donations help safeguard the Club’s vital services — from after-school meals and academic support to enrichment programs and career readiness. “We’re doing life-changing work here,” she says. “And we need the community to stand with us to keep it going.” Behind the blue door of the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City, hope walks in every day. With six member wineries available, Keuka Lake Wine Trail strives to deliver “an unforgettable experience blending history, wine, and warm hospitality.” For example, Heron Hill Winery prides itself in practicing sustainable viticulture, including seven different styles of Riesling. In addition, wineries along the Keuka Trail offer signature events throughout the year. In November, the Handcrafted Holiday program includes owner/winemaker-led tastings, behind-the-scenes discussions, vertical tastings (same producer but different vintages), unreleased wines, and more. Getting Around The Finger Lakes wineries span five counties and run for over 3,000 square miles. An easy and convenient way to get around the Finger Lakes is by car (your own or rental). If you don’t like the idea of driving after too many tastings, several tour operators offer private options. For example, Wine Wagen Tours takes up to six passengers to any of the 120 wineries in the area. Based on your wine tastes and preferences, the Wine Wagen will drive you to the place or places you want to visit, allowing about 45 minutes per winery.

Bottles That Taste Like September and October
W
hen the shore breeze turns crisp and the boardwalk quiets to a murmur, our palates shift too. Fall wine isn’t a marketing term so much as a feeling: it’s the season of texture over chill, spice over sweetness, savory over sun‑ripened fruit. A “fall wine” plays well with sweater weather and Sunday roasts, with beach bonfires and backyard tailgates. It has enough freshness to cut through hearty dishes, enough warmth to feel like a fireside conversation, and often a whisper of earth or spice that echoes the turning leaves. Here’s where my mind goes — regions, grapes, and styles that shine in September and October, and why they belong on your table at the Jersey Shore. Loire Valley, France — Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc Cabernet Franc from Chinon or Bourgueil is autumn in a glass: red currant, graphite, a hint of dried herbs. It’s medium‑bodied, bright, and endlessly versatile — fantastic with roast chicken, mushroom pasta, or a pork chop with apples. Chill it for 15 minutes, and it becomes the perfect companion for a cool evening on the deck. Chenin Blanc (Vouvray, Anjou, Saumur) covers the white side: orchard fruit, beeswax, a gentle spine of acidity. Dry versions love butternut squash soup, scallops, and soft cheeses after a day at the farm market. Beaujolais, France — Gamay Forget the novelty; real Beaujolais (especially villages or cru: Morgon, Fleurie, Moulin‑à‑Vent) is savory, silky, and subtly floral. Gamay is the red I pour when I don’t know what everyone’s eating. It handles burgers, turkey chili, and even cranberry‑laced stuffing trials in October. Serve slightly cool; the energy is unbeatable. Piedmont, Italy — Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto Piedmont is where truffle season meets red wine wisdom. Nebbiolo (Langhe or the famed Barolo/Barbaresco) smells like roses and autumn leaves, with tannins that love braised short ribs and wild mushrooms. For weeknights, Barbera’s juicy acidity makes tomato‑based dishes pop, and Dolcetto brings dark fruit and friendly tannins for pizza and game day. Northern Rhône, France — Syrah Cool‑climate Syrah (think Saint‑Joseph, Crozes‑Hermitage) gives pepper, olive, and dark berries — a savory profile made for grilled sausage, lamb, and charred vegetables. It’s a great bridge from summer grilling to fall roasting, with enough lift to keep things lively. Rioja, Spain — Tempranillo Rioja Crianza and Reserva offer dried cherry, tobacco, and baking spice without heaviness. They’re comfort wines — polished enough for a dinner party, relaxed enough for a sweater and a bowl of stew. Pair with roasted peppers, Manchego, and anything that’s seen paprika. Alsace and the Mosel — Riesling and Gewürztraminer Dry or off‑dry Riesling is a fall secret weapon: high acidity, low alcohol, and a talent for taming spice and richness. Think pork loin, Thai takeout on a rainy night, or a cheese board with local apples. Gewürztraminer adds rose and ginger notes that harmonize with squash, curries, and Thanksgiving trial runs. Austria and Alto Adige — Grüner Veltliner, Schiava, Lagrein Grüner Veltliner’s white pepper and stone fruit adore schnitzel, roasted root vegetables, and anything with herbs. For reds, Alto Adige’s Schiava is pale, aromatic, and perfect with charcuterie; Lagrein brings a darker, cocoa‑tinged profile that feels tailor‑made for short days and long conversations. Closer to Home — Finger Lakes, Virginia, Long Island, and New Jersey Crisp, mineral Finger Lakes Riesling belongs on every autumn table. Virginia and Long Island Cabernet Franc deliver that Loire‑like pepper and red fruit with East Coast charm. And right here at home, New Jersey producers are making serious, food‑friendly wines — perfect for a foliage drive and tasting day. When you want to drink local with your local oysters or a bowl of chowder, our shelves are full of Garden State gems worth discovering. Why these wines? Because fall is about balance — between shore and town, bustle and calm, sun and sweater. These bottles match our season: they’re generous without shouting, refreshing without being thin, and they tell stories of places that love harvest as much as we do. As the leaves turn, drink with curiosity and pair with people. Buy a couple of favorites twice so you can watch them evolve. And save a seat for someone new at your table — wine is better that way. Rooted in the heart of South Jersey, That Crafty Family is more than just a woodcarving business — it’s a creative collaboration built on family, artistry, and a deep respect for nature. Since 2022, the Hagan family has grown a community-centered brand that reflects both their passion for craftsmanship and their commitment to sustainability. By Louisa Esposito

or nearly three years, the Hagan family has been making waves in the South Jersey craft-maker scene with their woodcarving business, That Crafty Family. Rooted in the Jersey Shore area and the New Jersey Pinelands, husband and wife, Dave and Kelly, and their four children — Lily (20), Maya (18), Kinsey (14), and Trey (12) — create beach and forest-inspired pieces from locally sourced wood. The Hagan family only uses wood from damaged or sick trees; that way, their art is ethical and breathes new life into these trees. That Crafty Family has blossomed since its 2022 launch, with sponsorships from Arbor Tech and Total Boat, a strong social media following, several public pieces, an online store, in-person shops, and live woodcarving shows. The Hagans’ crafting journey began years before That Crafty Family, as Dave reminisced, “...it all started… when they were even littler… working together and doing stuff on the scroll saw, or Trey with the chainsaw...” Dave and Kelly homeschooled their children in Ventnor, NJ, educating them in the local environment and visual arts. The family took trips to local parks and nature centers, and went for walks
on the beach, learning about marine life while collecting seaglass for crafts. Through these projects, Dave and Kelly saw their kids’ passion for crafting and motivated them to make gifts for friends and family. Before they knew it, the Hagans had enough experience to make a bench for Reed’s Farms’ Donor Bench Program in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. This bench was pivotal in the origins of That Crafty Family, as it was their first piece on public display. It caught the eye of one family in particular, as Dave recalled, “...a family from Tuckahoe had seen our benches at Reed’s Farm… they wanted us to create special benches for them to put on their property. And at the same time, they had a big old oak stump that they were hoping to get a carving made out of. So that’s how a bigger project started.” Before they knew it, the Hagans were making more benches and other custom orders, mostly from their live woodcarving shows, as Dave stated, “...that’s kind of how a kind of a bigger project started… when we’re carving live and people see us carving different products or see creations that are already on the table, they’ll say, ‘Oh, can you make me this?’”

That Crafty Family is a business that embraces both family and individuality. Dave and Kelly’s eldest, 20-year-old Lily, plays softball and majors in Communications with a concentration in Professional Writing at Immaculata University. While she’s away at school, she edits videos for the business’s social media during her free time. The second eldest, 18-year-old Maya, a recent ACIT graduate and Rowan University freshman, is the family’s painter and social media manager. She has created many hand-painted pieces, such as ornaments and beach scenes, and does free face-painting at events. As That Crafty Family’s social media manager, she manages posts, responds to DMs, and has secured sponsorships with Arbor Tech and Total Boat, strategizing for the business’s digital future, as she explained, “We’re kind of shifting right now from short form content like 90 second, 15 second reels… to YouTube and more contentheavy things like 10-15 minute videos… we’re going away from mass producing to larger pieces and quality videos.” 12-year-old Kinsey, the youngest daughter, will attend Holy Spirit High School in Absecon, NJ, this fall. She was named an AllAmerican softball player in 2024. She plays a key organizational role with That Crafty Family, always putting the finishing touches on projects alongside her mother, Kelly. 12-year-old Trey, the youngest child and only son, is the family’s young prodigy woodcarver. He has six years of experience, learning how to use a chainsaw at just six years old. He has created and sold numerous carvings on his own and has contributed directly to larger projects, such as “The Monarch,” a gigantic butterfly statue. While “The Monarch” is Dave and Trey’s design, Maya guided them with structural advice and painting.

It is That Crafty Family’s largest project to date, with the red cedar sprouting up from the store’s first floor towards the mezzanine, nearly touching a chandelier hanging from the ceiling. One of the biggest challenges with “The Reach” was getting it through the front doors and the three-month deadline for SATA’s grand opening.

“The Reach” taught the Hagans that when all hands are on deck working hard, they can achieve the seemingly impossible, as Dave noted, “I have pictures of us leaning the tree table onto our deck and working at 10 o’clock at night, because we had such a time constraint to be able to deliver the tables for their grand opening…” The Hagans have another smaller table in SATA, located in the small room near the front entrance on the first floor, titled “Rest on Her Shoulders.” Along this black walnut table and on the table surrounding the base of “The Reach” are displays of various artwork and products from other local artists and makers. rt is more than a canvas that hangs over the couch, a sculpture in the garden, or a piece of furniture to place framed photos on. Art is power. International artist and disruptor Ai Weiwei believes that art and political activism are inextricably linked as a powerful tool for social and political commentary. Just as the relationship between yin and yang, art and politics influence and shape each other, creating a tension that challenges expression, human rights, and the power of government. One of Ai Weiwei’s popular quotes is “Everything is art. Everything is politics.” In 2011, Ai Weiwei was imprisoned for 81 days by the Chinese government and held captive in a windowless cell as part of China’s larger crackdown on human rights activists. In 2015, his passport was returned, and he left China. Known for his sculptures, installations, and performance pieces, he continues to create works that challenge authority and raise awareness about social injustice. As an artist, he channels his firsthand experiences with persecution and censorship into creating works that speak out against oppression. The roots of his creativity can be traced back to China’s Cultural Revolution during his childhood, as well as the influence of his father, a renowned poet and a persecuted individual. Ai Weiwei studied at Beijing’s Film Academy and lived in the United States from 1981 to 1993, where he attended notable institutions such as the Parsons School of Design and the Art Students League of New York. In the early 1990s, he returned to China and established the China Art Archives & Warehouse, becoming a leading artistic figure in contemporary Chinese art.

or over 100 years, Linwood Country Club has taken pride in its tradition and elegance. People enjoyed the “white linen tablecloth” atmosphere and the opportunity to dress to the nines. However, as Bob Dylan has told us repeatedly, “the times they are a-changin’.” What may have worked in 1925 is just not the ambiance diners look for in 2025. In fact, even the word ambiance may be a bit passe. Today, people look for restaurants that offer a fun, funky vibe. These changes have not gone unnoticed at Linwood Country Club. In 2017, the Dougherty family, owners of Dock’s Oyster House, Knife & Fork Inn, and Dougherty’s Steakhouse & Raw Bar in Atlantic City, took over the management of the club and restaurants. Since then, the old gal has gotten a makeover extraordinaire with a new look — more casual dining, a new name — Shay’s, and a new coastal casual vibe. There’s that word again.

Speaking about the menus, one noticeable change is that there are no more variations between lunch, dinner, bar, or happy hour. And, no more menu variations as to where you choose to dine at the Linwood Country Club. Pritchard explains, “Our guests appreciate that they can get their favorites from the menu at lunch or dinner, without regard for where they are sitting.” Whether a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary, or just a happy hour get-together with friends, Shay’s offers small plates, salads, sandwiches, and burgers, as well as traditional steak and seafood entrees.

As for the new name, Pritchard and the rebranding team spent numerous meetings deciding on the perfect name for the restaurant! They consulted managers, employees, family, and friends, which resulted in many, many possibilities. At the end of the day, Shay’s won the name game as a nod to Maureen Shay, wife of Frank Dougherty and an active part of all of the Dougherty ventures for over 30 years. Pritchard jokes that Maureen may say, “…it is about time I got a little recognition!”

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
he sweeping legislation of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” permanently extends many of the individual tax reductions introduced under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). This includes lower tax rates, expanded brackets, and the elevated standard deduction. For most of us, that means sidestepping a substantial tax increase that loomed at the end of 2025. We felt it would be prudent to provide a quick summary of some of the OBBB’s changes: New Tax Relief The bill also brings new, targeted relief. Starting in 2025 and lasting through 2028, you can deduct up to $25,000 in tip income and $12,500 in overtime pay. These deductions phase out for incomes north of $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers). Furthermore, the deduction for interest on auto loans now applies to up to $10,000 for U.S.-made vehicles if your Modified Adjusted Gross Income is less than $100,000 ($200,000 if Married Filing Jointly).
Supporting Families And The Next Generation Parents will welcome enhancements to the Child Tax Credit, which increases by $200 per child and becomes a permanent benefit. And for newborns, the bill spawns “Trump Accounts”— tax‑advantaged savings accounts seeded with $1,000 from the government, and the ability for parents to contribute up to $5,000 annually. Estate Planning And SALT Benefits Estate tax planning takes a leap forward: the lifetime exemption soars to $15 million per individual ($30 million for married couples), with indexing for inflation. On the deduction front, the state and local tax (SALT) cap quadruples to $40,000, phasing upward by 1% annually through 2029 before reverting in 2030. This deduction phases out for incomes north of $500,000. A Major Win For Retirees Perhaps most impactful for seniors: the new senior deduction allows up to $6,000 for individuals (or $12,000 for couples)
against Social Security income — lifting the share of seniors exempt from federal taxation from 64% to 88%. This becomes especially meaningful in high‑cost areas where housing taxes and living expenses weigh heavily on retirees’ budgets. Small Business And Planning Power Moves Small business owners and entrepreneurs gain traction here, too. The bill restores full first‑year expensing for equipment, R&D, and new buildings; it also cements the 20% pass‑through business income deduction. What This Means For You — And What You Can Do This new law brings strong incentives and planning opportunities — but also complexity. Whether you’re thinking about retirement, starting a family, planning your estate, or managing a small business, now is the time for a strategic review: • Retirees should assess eligibility for the senior deduction and how it interacts with Social Security and standard deductions. • Families can capitalize on increased child tax credits and explore Trump Accounts for newborns. • Homeowners in high-tax states may benefit from the elevated SALT cap. • Estate planners can seize the expanded exemption as part of long-term succession strategies. • Business owners should explore accelerated deductions, bonus depreciation, and strategic business entity structuring.
