Finding Meaning in the Season

The holiday season always feels like a whirlwind of to-do lists and errands. Every year, I tell myself I’ll simplify those lists, stop procrastinating and truly take in the spirit of the season. And while the last-minute scramble still seems to happen each year, one thing I always make sure to do is volunteer in some way. Over the years, my family has shopped wish lists for members of the military, participated in toy drives, written cards, and delivered meals. Even the smallest act of kindness can inspire a tradition of giving back with your kids. If you’re looking for ways to volunteer as a family, you’ll find plenty of ideas on page 90.

Every December, we stick with a few simple traditions like baking (check out the reindeer cookies on page 9) and heading into Manhattan to see the holiday windows. Being between New York City and Philadelphia means we’re surrounded by some amazing holiday attractions. But the beauty of living in New Jersey is that you don’t need to cross the Hudson to see them. From sparkling lights and festive attractions on page 93 to this season’s can’t-miss performances on page 102, this issue is all about celebrating the best of the holidays here in NJ. When you’re ready to shop, our gift guide on page 19 has plenty of ideas, including trending and unique finds for the kids, sweet and practical goodies for your pets, and a few treats for you, too.

This issue also celebrates something close to our hearts: the 17th annual New Jersey’s Favorite Kids’ Docs list! Each year, parents like you nominate the doctors, dentists, mental health professionals, and specialists who make a real difference in their children’s lives. At a time when our kids face more stress and pressure than ever, having trusted, compassionate care matters deeply. Turn to page 41 to see the full list—and visit njfamily.com/kidsdocs to share it with a friend.

Happy holidays!

With sugar pearls and royal icing, these cut-out cookies are guaranteed to spread holiday cheer.

Note: Total time does not include chilling and cooling time. This recipe is for the reindeer and tree cookies pictured.

Ingredients

Directions

Total Time: 40 minutes

Yields: 50 cookies

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/4 tsp. kosher salt

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract

Red, green, and white royal icing

Sanding sugar and sugar pearls, for decorating

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in egg, then vanilla. Reduce mixer speed to low and gradually add flour mixture, mixing just until incorporated. Shape dough into 4 disks and roll each between 2 sheets of waxed paper or parchment paper to 1/8-inch thick. Chill until firm: 30 minutes in the refrigerator or 15 minutes in the freezer.

Heat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Using floured cookie cutters, cut out cookies and place on the prepared baking sheets. Reroll, chill, and cut scraps.

Bake, rotating positions of pans halfway through, until cookies are light golden brown around the edges, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool on sheets 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely. Decorate as desired.

UNDER PRESSURE

Whether it’s a math test or the SAT, the pressure to perform can take a toll on our kids. How can we spot the signs of anxiety, ease the stress, and help our kids when it matters? We asked the experts to weigh in.

Raising

t’s 7 a.m. on a Tuesday and your child has a stomach ache. The thought of breakfast makes them queasy, and they ask to stay home. You encourage them to go to school, hoping it’s just nerves. By lunchtime, once their math test is behind them, they seem fine. Sound familiar? Chances are your kid may be dealing with some level of test anxiety.

With much of our kids’ academic success tied to test scores, it’s no surprise they are stressed. And while some stress is a normal part of their school experience, sometimes that stress can take over. How can you help? Start by recognizing the signs of test anxiety and helping your child manage the anxiety before it builds. We asked experts for advice to help our kids face tests with more confidence and less fear. Here’s what they shared:

SPOT THE SIGNS EARLY

Test anxiety can look different in every kid. “Test anxiety in school-aged children often manifests through physical symptoms,” says Joseph Galasso, PsyD, clinical psychologist and CEO of Baker Street Behavioral Health, headquartered in Franklin Lakes with o ces in Bergen, Essex and Monmouth counties, along with telehealth. Common signs include stomach aches, nausea, headaches, trouble sleeping, an increased need to use the bathroom, or frequent trips to the nurse.

“Emotionally, kids are likely to be feeling overwhelmed,” Galasso says. “When this occurs, we likely see overt changes in mood or behavior.” Symptoms sometimes mimic hyperactivity or learning di culties. You may see excessive worry and fear about performance (saying “I can’t do this”), clinginess, lack of concentration or “blanking” during tests, avoidance, acting out and withdrawal, Galasso says.

By middle school, the anxiety can show up as procrastination, perfectionism, sweaty palms and racing thoughts. In high school, worrying about grades, college, or disappointing

parents can lead to irritability and withdrawal.

NAME AND NORMALIZE THE FEELING

Helping kids recognize what they’re feeling and letting them know it’s okay to feel that way can help ease the anxiety. “You might say, ‘It’s okay to feel nervous—it means you care,’” says Michelle Felder, a licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist and founder and CEO of Parenting Pathfinders.

Feeling some anxiety is not a bad thing, says Geillan Aly, PhD, founder and CEO of Compassionate Math. “A little anxiety is good because it heightens our senses and makes us sharper.” The problem arises when worry starts to interfere with a child’s ability to perform. Aly says parents should watch what they say about tests. Saying things like “I don’t test well” can reinforce self-doubt. Aly encourages parents to help kids replace self-defeating beliefs like “I’m not a math person” with “math is a skill that can be developed.”

Building self-awareness and self-compassion is key, says Hillary Schoninger, a psychotherapist and licensed clinical social worker. She suggests simple a rmations like “I have worked hard to prepare, and I can be proud of my efforts so far” or “I can do hard things” to empower kids during stressful moments.

REFRAME WHAT TESTS MEAN

Helping kids see exams as feedback, not judgment, shifts the focus from fear to growth. “What parents model matters; their confidence, calm perspective, and ability to regulate their own anxiety related to test results can help teens feel safer doing the same,” says Felder. “These tests are one small part of a much bigger picture.”

Too often, high schoolers internalize expectations, linking grades and scores to their identity, Galasso says. “Pressure from parents to achieve, even when they are not explicitly expressed, can be a source of great stress for high school-aged

students.” That’s why it’s crucial to show kids that effort matters more than perfection.

Another important message to share with your kids is to focus on habits, not outcomes. Focus on “I’ll complete two practice sections this week” rather than “I’ll get a 1400,” Felder says. Celebrating progress over performance helps kids stay motivated, even when they don’t get the grade they hoped for.

ENCOURAGE HEALTHY STUDY HABITS

Help your child map out short, regular study blocks. Alternate subjects and schedule breaks. Sleep, exercise and good nutrition all help focus and mood, Felder says. Encourage your kids to use planners, online calendars or phone reminders, and leave extra time for sports, extracurriculars, family and downtime. Teacher check-ins and tutors when needed also go a long way toward building confidence.

“Helping teens to develop predictable, low-stakes practice routines that include short, consistent study periods—rather than engaging in a marathon cramming session—can be incredibly supportive and effective,” Felder says.

MODEL CALM AND BUILD CONFIDENCE

When stress hits, the goal is to move from the body’s fightor-flight mode into calm regulation. “Through breathing exercises and grounding activities, we are connecting with our parasympathetic nervous system and allowing our bodies to calm physically so that we can be in a calmer state in all ways,” says Schoninger. “Whether students are seeking grounding through meditation, walking, or other forms of movement,

this will help them open the door to finding what works best for them.”

The more practice and exposure the student has, the more they will identify what works best to help through anxious periods. Talking about the experience of the test before the outcome can also increase confidence. After the test, focus on how they felt, not what they scored, says Felder.

KNOW WHEN TO GET PROFESSIONAL HELP

If a child can handle schoolwork at home but freezes up on tests, that may be a sign of anxiety rather than a lack of understanding, says Aly, who works with students to address math test anxiety. Testing environments can be “high-stakes spaces where outcomes and results matter tremendously,” which is when professional help can make a huge difference.

“If for more than two weeks their anxiety is interfering with and negatively impacting their learning, appetite (increased or decreased), sleep, social life, peer or family relationships, or overall functioning, I’d suggest seeking support from a licensed mental health professional,” says Felder.

Galasso says Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the gold standard tool for reducing anxiety. CBT helps kids identify and reframe negative thoughts, replacing them with more compassionate ones. For example, instead of thinking, “I’m going to fail this test,” a student would instead say, “I’ve worked hard to prepare as best as I possibly can.”

Finally, if your child has an anxiety diagnosis, talk to their guidance counselor about support. Says Galasso: “Oftentimes, informal accommodations can be very helpful.”

PUT A STOP TO PRE-DIABETES

How to know if your child might be at risk

Pre-diabetes, a warning sign of increased risk of diabetes, is on the rise in kids. This condition occurs when blood glucose (i.e. blood sugar) levels are higher than normal, but they aren’t yet high enough to be diabetes. One report in JAMA Pediatrics found that nearly 1 in 5 kids ages 12 to 19 years old has pre-diabetes, with the rate jumping from 12 to 28 percent between 1999 and 2018.

Talk to your pediatrician about your child’s risk, especially if there’s a family history of diabetes. The good news is that, in some cases, early treatment can bring blood glucose levels to normal range, effectively preventing or delaying the onset of diabetes. Even small changes like these from the American Diabetes Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics can help:

Cook and eat meals together. Genetics can play a role in developing diabetes, but you can reverse the risks for the whole family by working together to eat better. Simple tweaks can make a difference, such as eliminating sugary beverages, adding more whole fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and avoiding ultra-processed foods. Have kids help with new recipe selection and meal prep, which gives them a sense of ownership.

Get moving together. Even if it’s just bundling up for a brisk walk together after dinner or taking a short weekend hike, making exercise a part of your family’s routine is the best way to incorporate more movement into everyone’s week. Aim for an hour of activity a day for your kids, but anything is better than nothing.

Make sleep a priority. It’s often the first thing to do when we get busy, but model good behavior yourself by making sure everyone gets to bed on time, and shut off screens at least an hour before bedtime. Maintain consistent wake and sleep times, even on weekends, and keep phones out of bedrooms (that means you, too!).

Find ways to de-stress. Studies have found that stress can affect blood sugar levels, so make sure everyone in the family has some downtime to do fun things—playing with the dog, spending time with friends, pursuing hobbies you love, or watching a funny movie together all help us feel more relaxed.

UP IN SMOKE

Why you need to talk to your kid about nicotine

-cigarettes are now the most commonly used tobacco products by kids, with an estimated 1.63 million middle and high school students reporting having used them—and 1 in 4 using them daily. Available in fruit and dessert flavors, they’re marketed to imply that they aren’t dangerous or addictive.

Another new category, nicotine pouches, has also captured kids’ attention in recent years. These products, which require no spitting, are deemed more “socially acceptable” and are sold in fruit, candy and mint flavors. They’re widely marketed on social media, where they’re promoted as discrete and easy to hide from adults. In fact, a new study found a shift from 2023 to 2024, with a doubling in nicotine pouch past-30-day use, an increase in pouch plus e-cigarette dual use, and a decrease in exclusive e-cigarette use by high-schoolers.

Whether or not you’ve already talked about nicotine use with your kids, it’s time to have another conversation. Try these tips from the CDC, the American Lung Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Here’s how to start a conversation:

Make it casual. You’ll usually get further if you bring it up when you see someone vaping, if you pass a vape store or if you see an ad on social media. Avoid saying “We need to talk,” which can elicit an eye roll.

Explain why all nicotine is harmful, especially to kids. This includes harming brain development, which continues until about age 25; impacting memory and attention; and increasing the risk for future addiction to other drugs.

Talk about how companies target kids specifically. Candy and fruit flavors are added to appeal especially to young people.

List the harmful substances. Explain what e-cigarettes contain, including nicotine, heavy metals, and cancer-causing chemicals.

Help them find resources to quit. If they’re already using, check out sites such as teen.smokefree.gov for support.

DEBUNKED! HEALTH MYTHS:

Here’s why what you’ve always heard isn’t actually true

By Arricca Elin SanSone

You’ve probably heard them all before—warnings about what will happen if you crack your knuckles, sit too close to the TV, or cross your eyes. But while these kid health “rules” get passed down from parents, friends, and even social media, many don’t hold up when it comes to science and research. Here’s the truth behind some common myths:

MYTH:

SUGAR MAKES KIDS HYPER.

Does it seem like your kids start bouncing off the walls every time they have a piece of cake or candy? Moms everywhere swear the “sugar high” is a thing. However, studies don’t back it up. “Research has consistently shown no link between sugar intake and hyperactivity,” says Margaret Quinn, DNP, clinical professor and specialty director of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Programs in the Division of Advanced Nursing Practice at Rutgers Health School of Nursing. “What often seems like a ‘sugar rush’ is usually excitement from the environment, such as being at a birthday party with friends.”

While research has found no link between sugar and cognitive performance of kids, other factors may play a role. “Sleep deprivation, stress or illness can affect behavior,” says

Quinn. But “while the sweet taste of candy may trigger a small adrenaline response, it does not directly cause hyperactivity.”

MYTH: GOING OUTSIDE WITH A WET HEAD WILL MAKE YOUR KID SICK.

This is probably one you’ve heard from as far back as your grandmother! Your kid’s wet head may make them feel uncomfortable on a chilly day, but it’s not going to give them a cold or the flu. “Germs make you sick, not wet heads,” says

Heidi Weinroth, MD, assistant professor of clinical pediatrics, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. “People do get more upper respiratory infections in the winter because we’re around each other more, indoors, in close contact. But even if your head is wet, germs don’t get in through your head or scalp.”

MYTH:

GREEN OR YELLOW MUCUS MEANS YOUR KID NEEDS ANTIBIOTICS.

There’s no denying that sometimes what comes out of your kid’s nose is colorful and downright disgusting. But that doesn’t mean it’s time for a prescription. “Mucus can be a variety of colors, which does not mean it is a bacterial infection,” says Quinn. “Our body produces enzymes to fight infections, and some enzymes contain iron, which can make mucus appear green. As we inhale things from the environment, like pollen in the spring, our mucus can turn green then also.”

A cold is viral, and antibiotics don’t treat viruses. Sometimes you simply need to watch and wait it out. But if the illness lasts more than ten days, high fever isn’t going away, or your kid feels worse, contact your pediatrician, says Weinroth. You know your child best, so it’s never wrong to call the doctor.

MYTH:

YOU SHOULD ALWAYS TREAT A COUGH.

There’s nothing worse than a kid hacking all day and night; it makes everyone, especially your child, miserable. But before you grab that over-the-counter (OTC) cough syrup, consider the facts. “A cough is your body’s way of getting mucus out of your lungs, so some coughing can be beneficial,” says Weinroth. “These OTC cough suppressants are minimally effective and often have adverse side effects.”

However, if your child’s cough is disruptive or causing them to lose sleep, you can give them a teaspoon of honey (if they are older than one year) at bedtime, says Weinroth. Studies have shown that honey may be as effective as OTC cough medications. It’s also okay to add honey to a warmed beverage, such as apple juice, if kids prefer.

MYTH:

IT’S TOO LATE TO GET A FLU SHOT THIS YEAR.

While the best time to get a flu shot is September or October,

“A cough is your body’s way of getting mucus out of your lungs, so some coughing can be beneficial.”

it’s really never “too late” because flu season typically lasts from October to May. So, vaccination at any point (it takes two weeks to become effective) can still provide protection, says Quinn.

Last year was a particularly bad season. According to the CDC, 266 influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported during the 2024–2025 season, and 90 percent of these children were not fully vaccinated. Although flu vaccines are recommended for ages 6 months and older, less than half of kids in that age group received the shot last year. If you still haven’t scheduled your child’s (or your) shot, call your doctor’s o ce ASAP.

MYTH: FEVERS ALWAYS NEED MEDICATION.

If your kid feels a little warm to the touch, it’s not necessary to dose them immediately with a fever-fighting medication. “Fevers are your body’s way to fight infection,” says Quinn. “A child who is eating and sleeping well and is playful and active does not need any fever-lowering treatment. The use of an antipyretic, such as acetaminophen, may make one feel more comfortable, but is not required.”

Most importantly, keep a digital thermometer on hand so you can gauge fevers accurately, and encourage your child to drink more to prevent dehydration, says Quinn.

Call your pediatrician if your child has the following fevers: Infants 3 months or younger: A rectal temperature of 100.4 or higher

Children younger than age 2: Fever lasts more than 24 hours

Children ages 2 and older: Fever lasts more than 72 hours

Any age: Any fever higher than 104 degrees Fahrenheit, with other symptoms such as seizure, severe sore throat, ear pain, headache, rash, vomiting or diarrhea, sleepiness or persistent fussiness

FOOD THOUGHT

FOR

The surprising impact of diet on your kid’s dental health

You may not realize just how big a role diet plays in your child’s dental health. “Dental disease is caused by multiple factors,” says Mario Ramos, DMD, president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation, and pediatric dentist at Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics of Midland Park. “The oral microbiome—or the bacteria in our mouths—use carbohydrates and sugar from foods to produce acid. Acid is what demineralizes our teeth, which leads to cavities.”

This process can begin in infancy. “As soon as the first tooth appears around the age of 6 months, your child is at risk for cavities,” says Mary Beth Giacona, DDS, MPH, associate professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Rutgers Health School of Dental Medicine. “Many parents don’t realize that even allowing your child to sleep with a bottle or nurse at night can lead to tooth decay.”

But good dental health isn’t only about preventing cavities. “There’s a connection with oral health into adulthood,” says Giacona. “Tooth decay is an infectious disease, and poor oral health may be associated with adverse effects later, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.”

Here’s how to set up your kids for success with a healthy diet that protects their oral health:

Don’t send kids to bed with a bottle. “Teeth bathed all night in milk provide a substrate for bacteria,” says Ramos. The same goes for nursing at will. In both cases, your child’s teeth are exposed for hours to natural sugars that can lead to cavities, often referred to as baby bottle tooth decay or nursing caries.

Limit sticky foods. This includes snacks such as raisins and other dried fruits, gummy candies, taffy, fruit rolls and caramels. You don’t need to eliminate them from your child’s diet, but these foods

allow sugar to stay in contact with the teeth for long periods of time. Have kids brush or rinse with water right away after eating them, says Ramos.

Eliminate grazing. Carbs play a role in tooth decay, too, because the bacteria break down the starch, or carbohydrates, into sugars, says Ramos. Letting kids snack all day long on crackers, pretzels or cereal keeps those substances in contact with the teeth for an extended period.

Get rid of the all-day sippy cup. “It’s the frequency of sipping, more than the amount, that matters. It’s better to drink beverages like milk in one sitting at a meal than sipping them all day long,” says Giacona. Ditto for the sugar-filled sports drinks that teens love.

Give kids water to drink. Sugary drinks such as sodas or even 100 percent fruit juice are treats that should be reserved for special events, such as a birthday party, not daily consumption, says Ramos. Plain drinking water is the best option overall, while plain milk is also okay.

Offer tooth-friendly snacks. Raw fruits and vegetables such as apples, pears, carrots and celery are a great choice for snacking because the crunchy texture helps keep the oral environment clean. Foods like yogurt and cheese are other good options to provide calcium that helps build strong teeth, says Ramos.

Allow a treat once in a while. “It’s unrealistic to not allow kids to have an occasional piece of candy or sweets,” says Giacona. But choose wisely. For example, chocolate is better than a lollipop or sticky candy that remains in the mouth for hours.

Schedule their first dental visit by age 1. “Baby teeth matter. What we know from studies is that kids who have decay in baby teeth have a much higher rate of decay in permanent teeth,” says Ramos. Establishing a dental home also provides a place to be seen in an emergency, such as a chipped tooth, and allows the dentist to assess your child’s risk for cavities, alignment, and other potential issues before they become problems. Make brushing a habit. Before teeth erupt, clean your baby’s mouth with a soft cloth or infant toothbrush. Once your child has his or her first tooth, start brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Use a smear the size of a grain of rice for kids younger than 3, or a pea-sized amount for kids older than 3, says Giacona. Flossing is important, too. Once two or more teeth are touching, start flossing. An electric toothbrush, water device, or special flosser tools can all be helpful for getting into tiny mouths, especially if you’re still the one doing the brushing. “Use whatever works to get the job done,” says Giacona.

Add fluoride treatments. Because most municipalities in New Jersey do not have fluoridated water, talk to your pediatrician or pediatric dentist about applying a fluoride varnish to give teeth extra protection against cavities. Fluoride helps harden enamel and makes it more resistant to acidic attacks, says Giacona. Fluoride supplements, much like a daily vitamin, also may be prescribed.

NEW JERSEY PEDIATRIC

Neurology

The multidisciplinary team at NJ Pediatric Neuroscience Institute (NJPNI) provides collaborative, compassionate and personalized care to every child. NJPNI offers exceptional pediatric care through cutting-edge medical expertise and a highly trained staff that treats families with warmth, understanding and respect.

Improving Patients’ Quality of Life

“Watching children overcome challenges and grow stronger is the most fulfilling part of my job,” says Dr. Jeffrey Kornitzer, director of pediatric neurology at NJPNI. “Helping children regain their health and seeing their quality of life improve reminds me daily why I chose pediatric neurology as my specialty.” The providers utilize the latest technologies, including advanced neuroimaging techniques and neurodiagnostic testing, to diagnose and treat pediatric neurological conditions. They emphasize minimally invasive treatments when possible and offer innovative therapies for

epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders and neurodevelopmental conditions. The team also offers telemedicine consultations.

Caring for the Whole Child

“We understand that pediatric neurology can be a stressful experience for families, so we go out of our way to create a welcoming, calm environment,” says Dr. Kornitzer, a father of four. “We strive to make every family feel comfortable and well-informed by fostering open communication.” Boardcertified in pediatric neurology, Dr. Kornitzer serves as an assistant professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He has written more than a dozen peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals. “At NJPNI, we’re not just treating a condition—we’re caring for the whole child,” he says. “Our goal is to give every child the opportunity to thrive.”

Neurosurgery

The neurosurgery division of the New Jersey Pediatric Neuroscience Institute (NJPNI) provides comprehensive, patient-centered care for pediatric patients and their families. The practice recently welcomed more than six new boardcertified pediatric neurosurgeons and neurologists, and opened an office in Hamilton.

Family-Centered Treatment

Board-certified pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Catherine Mazzola and her team provide patients with exceptional and individualized treatment for conditions including cerebral palsy, Chiari malformation, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, craniosynostosis, plagiocephaly, torticollis, brain tumors and spina bifida, as well as ADHD, autism, back/neck pain, headaches and tics.

“At our family-centered practice, we make the evaluation and treatment process as stress-free as possible,”

Dr. Mazzola says. The doctors use cutting-edge technologies to provide the best possible outcomes. They collaborate with an extensive network

of neurologists, therapists, psychologists and orthotists to develop individualized care plans.

Comprehensive and Collaborative Care

The doctors are available at night and on weekends for emergency visits and consultations, and they participate in many insurance plans. With the help of a compassionate team of nurse practitioners, they provide an array of surgical as well as minimally invasive therapeutic options to improve each child’s health and quality of life.

“We understand the stress involved in caring for a sick child, and ensure each child receives the necessary therapies and interventions,” says Dr. Mazzola, the first pediatric neurosurgeon in New Jersey to launch multidisciplinary programs in the areas of spasticity, cerebral palsy, craniofacial disorders and pediatric brain tumors.

ADVANCED PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATES

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

At Advanced Psychiatric Associates, boardcertified child and adolescent psychiatrist

Dr. Wilbert Yeung and licensed psychologist

Dr. Amanda Carlin provide psychiatric evaluations, psychotherapy and psychopharmacology services in a relaxed, comfortable private office. The doctors are experienced in treating children, teens, adults and families for anxiety, OCD, depression, mood disorders, ADHD, behavioral issues and eating disorders.

Making Patient Comfort a Priority

“Parents are often hesitant about taking their child to a psychiatrist, so we strive to make patients comfortable, share our expertise and knowledge and empower them to make the best decisions for their family,” Dr. Yeung says. “We help patients and parents feel like educated consumers and ease any fears they may have about psychiatric treatment.”

“It’s important that patients feel supported, feel part of the process and learn life skills they can always carry with them,” Dr. Carlin says. Healing begins with an evaluation and discussion of available treatments, including therapy and medication options. The doctors partner with

families, schools and other providers to advocate for patients on their road to recovery.

Extensive Training and Deep Expertise

Dr. Yeung attended Harvard University and RutgersRWJ Medical School before completing his residency and fellowship at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He is a past president of the New Jersey Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (NJCCAP).

A certified provider of family-based treatment for eating and feeding disorders, Dr. Carlin earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Carlin supervised trainees at the Adolescent Eating Disorder Program at Overlook Medical Center.

Orthopedic Spine Surgery, Scoliosis & Spinal Deformity

Dr. Jason Lowenstein is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon practicing in both New Jersey and New York City. He serves as medical director and chief of scoliosis and spinal deformity at Morristown Medical Center, and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at NYU Langone Health. He’s been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor; voted Top Doctor by New York Magazine and NJ Monthly Magazine, and Jersey’s Best Magazine; honored by Inside Jersey Magazine as a Top Doctor, Top Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, and Top Doctor for Children’s Health, and was named one of NJ’s Favorite Kids’ Docs by New Jersey Family magazine.

Focused on Cutting-Edge, Minimally-Invasive Care

He specializes in the treatment of scoliosis, kyphosis and spondylolisthesis, and revision spine surgery for the treatment of failed back syndrome or previous spinal deformity surgeries that require further surgical intervention. He frequently utilizes vertebral body tethering (VBT) for anterior scoliosis correction when treating patients with scoliosis as a flexible alternative to traditional fusion surgery and was the first surgeon in NJ to utilize the

first FDA-approved tether instrumentation system from Zimmer Biomet.

Finding the Right Treatment Plan

When managing patients with scoliosis, Dr. Lowenstein believes in pursuing all nonsurgical options first, such as brace treatment or the Schroth Method of physical therapy.

“When surgery’s necessary, I often utilize minimally invasive techniques to make the treatment process easier and reduce recovery time,” he says.

Dr. Lowenstein studied neuroscience and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh and performed his orthopedic surgery residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in adult and pediatric spine and scoliosis surgery at Emory University Hospital.

Speech Therapy / Occupational Therapy / Feeding Therapy / ABA Therapy

The therapists at Brave Wings Therapy believe that every child deserves the tools and confidence to breathe, eat, speak and grow into their fullest potential. The integrative, multidisciplinary pediatric practice provides speech, occupational and feeding therapy and autism services to support infants through young adults.

Unique and Innovative Treatment Plans

What makes the practice truly unique is its commitment to blending compassion with innovation. Brave Wings is one of the only clinics in the country offering ultrasound visual feedback, a groundbreaking technology that lets children “see” how their tongue moves in real time to make learning speech sounds and oral motor skills fun, engaging and effective—and helping kids make faster progress.

The therapists are also highly trained in specialized approaches. They hold certifications in SOS Feeding Therapy, PROMPT Therapy and Orofacial Myology, which focus on the building blocks of speech, feeding and oral function and allow the therapists to create treatment plans that are as unique as each child.

Therapy That’s Effective (and Fun!)

“We emphasize treating the whole child—supporting posture, airway, feeding and communication—while teaching families simple ways to help at home,” says Dr. Jennifer Moore, co-founder and speech and apraxia expert.

Therapy at Brave Wings isn’t just effective—it’s fun. The practice’s warm, inviting clinics feature therapy rooms filled with toys, games and sensory equipment, plus state-of-the-art gyms with swings, slides, a custom rock wall and a ball pit. “Children feel safe, motivated and excited to reach their goals,” says Naomi Sutton, cofounder and speech-feeding therapist.

Pediatric Orthopedics

For nearly 40 years, The Pediatric Orthopedic Center (TPOC) has provided expert care for children and teens with disorders of bones, joints and muscles. Conditions treated include sports injuries, fractures, hip dysplasia, clubfoot, scoliosis and complex problems. The practice emphasizes non-surgical care but offers minimally-invasive procedures when necessary. Families are supported with compassionate, patient-first treatment, and financial concerns never limit access to care.

State-of-the-Art Technologies

“When surgery is necessary, we use advanced technologies to shorten hospital stays—or avoid them—while ensuring a safe return to activities,” says Dr. Mark Rieger, founding partner and first pediatric orthopedic division chief at Morristown Medical Center. Dr. Rieger and Dr. Tamir Bloom are the only New Jersey physicians listed on Ponseti’s site for non-operative clubfoot treatment.

Recognized as “NJ Favorite Kids’ Docs” and NJ Monthly “Top Doctors” for more than 15 years, the team also provides care at Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Saint Barnabas and Overlook Medical Centers, NYU Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital and Short Hills Surgical Center.

Pioneers in Orthopedic Care

TPOC employs innovative non-operative, minimally invasive and arthroscopic techniques for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

It was the first private practice in New Jersey to adopt EOSedge Imaging, which reduces radiation exposure to about 4 percent of standard X-rays in most cases. Other advances include BEAR™ ACL repair and FIREFLY™ navigation to maximize safety in spinal surgery.

“Our team manages both common injuries and the most complex orthopedic challenges, providing excellent outcomes while keeping families close to home,” Dr. Rieger says.

Pediatrics in Chatham specializes in comprehensive, family-centered primary care and has been providing a medical home for families since 2002.

A Patient-Centered Medical Home

Healthcare consumer and peer resources have recognized

Touchpoint as one of NJ’s top pediatric practices. The practice has been reaccredited again by the NCQA for recognition as a patient-centered medical home—including a focus on team-based, coordinated care. “We treat parents as partners in their child’s healthcare team,” Dr. Shaw says.

A board-certified, fellowship-trained developmental and behavioral pediatric specialist, Dr. Shaw has extensive experience managing ADHD, autism and learning disorders. Recognized as a New Jersey Family “Favorite Kids’ Doc” since the program’s inception, the practice’s doctors are on staff at Morristown, Overlook and St. Barnabas medical centers.

Meeting Children’s Medical and Non-Medical Needs

Many physicians entrust the care of their children to

Dr. Shaw and her colleagues, who coordinate care with specialists and follow up with patients. The office’s friendly, caring front desk staff makes families feel at home. The practice also provides telemedicine appointments. The pediatricians have special expertise in asthma, allergies, prematurity, genetic disorders, digestive and nutritional issues, and sports medicine and collaborate to guide families toward healthy habits.

Touchpoint is actively seeking experienced physicians to expand their practice. “We’re so appreciative of our patient following and their loyalty to our practice,” Dr. Shaw says. “We take our obligation to our existing patients very seriously.”

Scoliosis, Spine Surgery & Hand Surgery

The team of dedicated physicians, surgeons and health professionals at University Spine Center make it their “mission to alleviate pain, improve function and enhance quality of life for patients suffering from spine disorders,” says Dr. Arash Emami, the practice founder.

Improving Patients’ Quality of Life

Dr. Emami, Dr. Ki Soo Hwang, Dr. Kumar Sinha and Dr. Nikhil Sahai are fellowship-trained in spine surgery and board-certified in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Andrew McGinniss’ areas of interest include hand and upper extremity disorders and entrapments including carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes. “Our goal is to make kids comfortable by explaining things in a way they can understand, and for them to know that their providers are interested in their care,” he says.

Cutting-Edge Treatments

Among the first surgeons in the state to introduce minimally-invasive spinal surgery, Dr. Emami is dedicated to revolutionizing spinal treatments with groundbreaking techniques and research. His novel research and original

publications on the safety of outpatient spinal surgeries have earned him widespread recognition. Dr. Emami has also trained and mentored hundreds of orthopedic surgeons, and shared his knowledge and novel surgical techniques through hundreds of presentations at scientific meetings worldwide. This group is serious about expanding knowledge in their specialties. The surgeons conduct clinical research and teach residents at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where Dr. Emami is chairman of the Orthopedics Department and Chief of Spine Surgery. He is also an associate professor of Orthopedics at Seton Hall University. “Once we relieve the pain and help someone recover, life can begin again,” he says.

BEHAVED BRAIN WELLNESS CENTER

Family Mental Health Therapy

At Behaved Brain Wellness Center, Katie Gately and her team specialize in individual, couples and family therapy, with a focus on brain health for children and teens. Their approach combines evidencebased therapies like cognitive-behavioral (CBT) and play therapy with mindfulness practices, psychoeducation, and practical life strategies to help kids and families manage ADHD, anxiety, OCD, depression and more.

“My background in neuroscience taught me how critical it is to address the foundations of sleep, exercise, nutrition, supplements and screen time, and also ensure that parents are taking care of themselves,” says Katie Gately, a board-certified behavior analyst and licensed professional counselor.

The therapists take a structured, holistic approach, partnering with families to design personalized treatment plans. Children benefit from hands-on methods such as art projects, journaling, role-playing, mindfulness exercises, social skills training and cognitive strategies.

“We want kids to develop resilience and stress management skills, from playground challenges to high school pressures,” says the mom of two.

Orthodontics

Dr. David Caggiano knows you have a choice when it comes to your orthodontic care.

That’s why Caggiano Orthodontics is committed to combining the latest technology with exceptional customer service.

“Orthodontics allows me to apply my master’s degree in biomedical engineering, artistic talent and previous seven years of general dentistry experience to create innovative solutions for even the toughest orthodontic situation,” Dr. Caggiano says. “Our goal is always to provide the most up-to-date technology and techniques and use the best materials available.”

Comfortable, Efficient Treatments

The author of A Parent’s Guide To Understanding Orthodontics: How To Confidently Choose The Best Orthodontist For Your Family and Perfectly Clear: Everything You Need To Know About Invisalign, Dr. Caggiano was one of the first in the state to use digital impression scanners and 3-D printers. The practice can provide impression-free treatments that eliminate goopy molds and discomfort. The use of high-quality, self-ligating braces and indirect bonding allows for fewer appointments, shorter treatment

times and superior results.

“Engineering each smile should be personalized,” says the father of two. “It’s important to achieve the best result in the most efficient and comfortable manner for each patient.”

Affordable Orthodontic Care for Families

This year marks Dr. Caggiano’s 15th consecutive year being reviewed and approved as a New Jersey’s Favorite Kids’ Doc. The area’s leading Invisalign provider for teenagers and adults, he is passionate about making orthodontic care affordable for families; Caggiano Orthodontics offers free consultations, convenient hours and flexible payment plans.

“Patients are always complimenting us on how thorough our exam process is,” he says. “As a father, I want the best care for my child, and I know the parents of my patients feel the same.”

Known to patients as “Dr. Rose,” Dr. Rosalie Nguyen makes patients feel at home while providing personalized, best-in-class dental treatment for infants, children, adolescents and patients with special needs.

Earning Patients’ Trust

Dr. Rose and her associates strive to change the way children feel about dental visits and procedures. The practice’s mission is to ensure that each child and family is treated with respect and support while receiving the highest quality dental care in a safe, nurturing environment.

“We always take the time to answer questions and educate our patients and parents,” says Dr. Rose, a mother of three boys. “We build trust with patients by explaining what we’re doing every step of the way, and treat each patient as if they were our own child.”

A Variety of Treatment Modalities

Dr. Rose and her team utilize state-of-the-art techniques and offer an array of treatment modalities in their modern, all-digital practice. Treatment options

include the minimally invasive silver diamine fluoride treatment, anesthesia-free laser treatment, nitrous oxide, IV sedation and general anesthesia at Hackensack University Medical Center.

After earning her dental degree at UMDNJ, she completed a general dental residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson and pediatric dental residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, NY. Dr. Rose also underwent extensive training at the Rose F. Kennedy Children’s Center in treating patients with special needs. She started working in private practice in 2005 and opened her own office in 2009.

“We provide all of these different treatment modalities so we can be a one-stop shop for families,” Dr. Rose says. “There’s no need to bring your child to multiple practices for their dental care—we do it all right here.”

Father-and-son team Drs. Stanley and Scott Gersch and their partner, Dr. Ilona P. Rossignol, provide an exceptional orthodontic experience in their newly remodeled, high-tech offices in Westfield, Cranford and Linden. They combine advanced treatments and technology with a caring approach.

Four Decades of Smiles

“We’ve been treating children, teens and adults for more than 40 years, and we’re proud that our doctors and their families are local and active members of the community,” says Dr. Stanley Gersch, past president of the NJ Association of Orthodontists and Director of Invisalign at NYU.

The doctors have a prevention-oriented approach with a non-extraction philosophy, and are proponents of early intervention treatment. They keep visits fun with theme weeks, contests, events and prizes

Diamond Plus Top 1% ELITE Invisalign Providers

Their three state-of-the art practices use the latest technology, such as digital scanners (no goopy impressions!), lasers and self-ligating brackets, to create customized treatment plans. All three doctors are Invisalign and Invisalign

Teen Diamond Plus Providers, the highest distinction given to the Top 1% of providers.

The practice offers a range of cosmetic options with shorter treatment times and minimal discomfort. All three locations offer early morning, evening and weekend hours with flexible payment options and work with most insurance plans.

“It’s a privilege to be a part of this outstanding team and have the opportunity to transform our patients’ smiles and lives,” Dr. Rossignol says. A board-certified orthodontist, she earned her DMD from Harvard University and MS in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.

Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentist Dr. Yana Kozlovsky wants parents and their children to know that going to the dentist can actually be fun. Known as Dr. Yana, she strives to help her young patients enjoy dental visits while positively influencing children’s dental development and ensuring future oral health.

Making Dental Visits Fun

The family-oriented, modern practice features iPads, games and TVs for kids (and their parents) to enjoy—her patients often don’t want to leave the office after their appointment. Dr. Kozlovsky’s staff knows and engages with each child personally.

“Our staff has been here for a long time, so they have developed relationships with our families and make kids feel welcome the moment they walk through the door— and when it’s time for treatment, our assistants and hygienists are also a lot of fun,” says the mother of three.

Dr. Kozlovsky believes in conservative treatment whenever possible. The state-of-the-art practice offers the latest technology, including digital radiographs and intraoral photos.

Team Effort for Treatment

Dr. Kozlovsky always discusses all available options with parents. “The care we provide is completely individualized, and it’s always a team effort here—we believe in partnering with families and presenting them with all of their options so we can decide upon the best treatment plan for their child together.”

Dr. Kozlovsky is a recipient of the Richard C. Pugh Achievement Award for outstanding performance on the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination. She completed her DMD Degree at Rutgers Dental School, a general practice residency at Mountainside Hospital and a residency in pediatric dentistry at Maimonides Medical Center, where she served as chief resident.

“I’ve always known I wanted to work with kids—they are so much fun and everyone in our office genuinely enjoys interacting with our patients and getting to know them,” she says.

NEWTON-SPARTA /

Pediatric Dentistry / Orthodontics

Dr. Michael Lateiner and Dr. Peter Paradiso want kids and parents to know that going to the dentist can be fun. “Our job is to make sure that kids leave happy and are excited to come back,” says Dr. Lateiner, a board-certified pediatric dentist and 16time New Jersey Family Favorite Kids’ Doc. “We’re happiest when a once-fearful patient leaves with a smile.”

Positive Dental Visits for Kids

Known as “Dr. Mike” and “Dr. Pete,” the pediatric dentists are admittedly kids at heart. The decor of their practice’s three modern, vibrant office locations reflects their commitment to making dentistry and orthodontics a positive experience for children; Bright Smiles 4 Kids was recently renovated and is now double its original size. They treat children and teens in a welcoming atmosphere with all the bells and whistles, from TVs to an Xbox, tablets to touch-screen games. The Newton location has a jungle theme, Cedar Knolls depicts a trip around the world in a giant hot air balloon, and the practice’s newest office in Hackettstown takes kids under the sea. “We try to keep everything fresh and new to ensure kids enjoy their experience with us,” says Dr. Lateiner, a father of three. “Whether it’s our fish tank, bubble wall or video games,

patients are excited to see what’s new in the office.”

Comfortable, Pain-Free Treatments

All three offices use state-of-the-art technology to help make visits comfortable and pain-free, including digital impressions and X-rays, as well as bitewing images taken from outside the mouth. “We deliver top-notch services in a way that puts kids at ease and makes parents feel that their children are well taken care of,” Dr. Paradiso says. Dr. Lateiner and Dr. Paradiso graduated from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. They are both on staff at Morristown Medical Center, where they teach dental residents.

Pediatric Dentistry / Orthodontics

The board-certified pediatric dentists of Ocean Pediatric Dental Associates provide quality pediatric and orthodontic care for infants and children. They offer a variety of treatment modalities to optimize safety and improve the patient experience, including in-office sedation and hospital dentistry as needed.

Fun and Exciting Dental Visits

“Dental visits for children can often be stressful. We pride ourselves on making dental visits exciting and fun to lower dental anxiety and fear—it’s the most rewarding part of what we do,” says Dr. Elisa Velazquez, immediate past president of the New Jersey Dental Association.

With offices in Cream Ridge, Manahawkin and Toms River, the dentists take a team approach and work together to improve the dental lives of their patients. The friendly, empathetic practitioners are highly skilled in all areas of pediatric dental and orthodontic care.

“We love being able to live, work and play in the community along with our patients and their families,” Dr. Matt Sones says.

High-Tech, Kid-Friendly Offices

The child-friendly practice exclusively uses digital radiography to reduce radiation exposure, as well as digital scanning and a soft tissue laser to perform frenectomies with little to no bleeding and shorter recovery times. The orthodontists offer traditional braces as well as Invisalign.

“Our offices are very kid-friendly, which you’ll notice as soon as you walk through the door,” Dr. Velazquez says.

The dentists constantly pursue continuing education to broaden their knowledge of child development and enhance their skills in all of the latest pediatric dental, orthodontic and sedation techniques. “Kids are so much fun! We love having the opportunity to help improve the dental health of a child… which can lead to a great, healthy smile into adulthood,” Dr. Sones says.

Three Convenient Locations

The Somerville office was recently remodeled and expanded to provide patients with the best possible care.

VOLUNTEERING:

CREATING A FAMILY HOLIDAY TRADITION

Simple ways to bond as you give to others

Holidays often rush by in a whirlwind of to-do lists, activities and overconsumption. But they’re also a great time to pause, count your blessings and give back as a family. Volunteering together helps kids learn kindness, nurture gratitude and empathy, create lasting memories, and develop connection. When kids start volunteering early, it becomes the norm and fosters lifelong traditions of compassion and caring, says psychologist Dr. Jennifer Ajosa, of New Jersey-based Baker Street Behavioral Health.

VOLUNTEERING HOW-TOS

Start small. “Introduce your child to volunteer work slowly and in small doses when they’re young,” advises Pascack Valley mom Allison Berkowitz, who began involving her daughter Skyler, now 15, when she was 8.

“I love helping and making people happy,” says Skyler. She recommends engaging young kids through fun, simple projects—collecting donations, helping stock backpacks, drawing pictures. Chances are once they start, they’ll be hooked by the feel-good rush that comes from giving.

Match interests. Pair activities with your kids’ personality and passions. Let kids choose a cause they care about. Have an animal lover? Try an “Adopt a Pet” event or help out at a shelter. A crafty kid? Make holiday cards for soldiers. Is your teen environmentally conscious? Join a town-wide cleanup. Junior chefs can bake cupcakes for a charity sale.

Keep it age-appropriate. Sometimes just showing up has impact. Hillsdale community leader Melissa Mazza-Chiong doesn’t commit her sons, Matteo, 11, and Julian, 9, to hours-long activities. Instead, she and her husband include them in smaller tasks like delivering toys to local dropoffs or helping set up at events. “It lets them understand what giving means in a way that’s real, manageable and age-appropriate,” she explains.

Carolyn Amores, a Bergen County mom of Landon, 5, and Hunter, 3, agrees Last winter she and her husband handed out sandwiches and toiletries to the homeless in NYC. Her kids, too young to go along, helped pack the bags. “They contributed in their own way to the best of their abilities,” she says.

Tailor activities. Hands-on tasks—decorating a children’s hospital ward or handing out treats at community events—make the experience engaging and memorable for little ones. Older kids can take on more significant roles, like organizing drives or serving meals, which help them understand the deeper purpose behind volunteering. Lean into their temperament. Some enjoy group settings; others prefer one-on-one interactions or behindthe-scenes tasks.

Know the rules. Many charities require that volunteers be 18+. Some welcome helpers as young as four years old. Do your homework to know what’s possible where and when.

Prepare kids. “Make sure they know what to expect,” Dr. Ajosa says, and encourage kids to ask questions. Explain why a cause matters, who they’re helping and what

their roles will be.

Start where you are. If you’re short on time or resources, no worries. Offer what you can—an hour, a few items or simply your presence. As Mazza-Chiong says: “My hope is that as my boys get older, they’ll take on bigger roles. But for now, I focus on what they can do.”

Create teaching moments and spark conversations. “Encourage reflection by talking about the experience on the way home,” says Megan Muller, director of Volunteer Programs at Jersey Cares. “Simple conversations—around what you did, who it helped and how it felt—can turn a one-time act of service into a lasting desire to support their community.”

Do your own thing. Acts of service don’t always have to be official or organized. You don’t need a signup sheet to:

Shovel a neighbor’s sidewalk.

Drop off pizzas at a firehouse.

Make a blessings basket with all the fixings—including a frozen turkey—to surprise a family in need.

Buy stocking-stuffer toiletries to hand out at a women’s or family shelter.

Organize a coat drive with friends.

Adopt a family through a giving tree and shop together for their wish list.

Do a reverse advent calendar (add one food item to a donation bin each day of December).

Make it a tradition, not a chore. Frame volunteering as something you get to do, not something you have to do. “If volunteering feels more like a meaningful opportunity rather than an obligation, it’ll be more meaningful, Muller says.

“Making a difference in someone’s life will make you want to continue year after year,” says Berkowitz.

Carry it forward. Kids learn by example. Mazza-Chiong grew up inspired by her grandparents, who gave what little they had to those with even less. “During the holidays, they would bring food, clothes, even small toys to people in need,” she recalls. “They showed me that you don’t need a lot to give. It just takes heart and action.”
