THE LOCATION Mumbai is the business capital of India and is also one on the largest cities in the country. A strong cultural history in its name ,Mumbai city expanded drastically and a number of suburban towns were incorporated within the city limits post independence . In 1960, Bombay became the new capital of Maharashtra. Sky-scrapers, towering architecture, the Bombay Stock Exchange, tarred roads and a boom in the secondary and tertiary sector changed the city’s status and brought it up to one of the top four cities in the country.

Vikhroli has always been at the heart of the Godrej G r o u p ’ s h i s t o r y. T h e ‘Imagine Studio’ complex is a thoughtful example of legacy reinterpreted whilst retaining the heritage and post – industrial identity of the site. Over the next several years, Vikhroli is likely to be the single largest inner city real estate development in Mumbai offering untapped growth potential from an end user as well as an investment perspective. This leafy neighborhood strategically commands Mumbai’s physical geographic center. It enjoys the best urban connectivity the city has to offer.

IMAGINE THE STUDIO

Ardeshir Godrej’s vision to develop Vikhroli as an industrial township finally came true as Godrej One , their headquarters was built.

Adding to the vision , set in a 1-acre site, the Imagine Studio complex spans 3900 sqm in area. Designed as the Experience Centre for ‘The Trees’, the intent was to illustrate an invigorated public realm while preserving the essence of the site’s industrial heritage.

The outer frame has been left intact. Existing buildings and its elements were recycled not only to underline their relevance in past eras but also add meaning as important design punctuations in the narrative.

The materials were deliberately chosen to add layers to the sequence of events planned for the project. The landscape design strategically re-purposes the heritage environ in a more urban, communitycentric setting. Amalgamating industrial scrap and integrating them with the plants, it uses them as a story telling device.

Existing buildings and its elements were recycled not only to underline their relevance in past eras but also add meaning as important design punctuations in the narrative. The timeless architectural forms derived from the current industrial sheds and the materiality of Concrete, Corten Steel, Brass and Timber work on the principle of ‘Wabi-Sabi’, allowing the buildings to age beautifully over time.

BOILER ROOM

The existing Boiler Plant was converted into an all- day Creating the gateway to the entire development with the café by retaining the structural framework and a boiler Studio, the Workshop is a multi-functional space with sample tank as a memory of its original intent. The Boiler Café, apartments, a meeting area and a multi-purpose gallery for Workshop and Studio together create the edges of cultural events. a vibrant public space that demonstrates the core philosophies of ‘The Trees’ and comes alive through events, a market street, an urban farm, an amphitheater and areas for public art installations.

The newly-designed interiors derive inspiration from the “memory” of the metal silos - cylindrical units at the site. The silhouette of these forms offers contrast to the rigid geometry of the building, hence acting as a sculptural insert. Here , the silo has been converted into an audio-visual room.

LEGACY SILOS

Amalgamating and integrating industrial scrap with the plants, the landscape uses them as a story telling device. A Corten Steel strip inserted into the layout acts as a guiding pathway that subtly indicates the key experiences of the entire marketing journey. These sit sculpturally into a landscape, which with its places for public engagement and participation, will go on to evolve new ideas for the future.

The old louvers of the primary plant, now the Studio, were repurposed in Corten Steel and perforated with patterns.
