General Information & Sale Notes LOCATION: The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The Market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6. VIEWING - The Sale Sheep will be available for viewing at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on the morning of the sale, or Prior Inspection of the sheep is most welcome by appointment with John Vaughan, (Tel: 01568 797435 or Mobile: 07974 956201.) CONDITIONS OF SALE - Sold under the conditions of sale as recommended by The Livestock Auctioneers’ Association. HOTELS - There are many hotels within the area, ranging from four star to excellent Bed and Breakfast accommodation, a list of which may be found on page 4 of the catalogue. METHOD OF SALE - All sheep will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers. COMMISSIONS - The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions. SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK - Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. VORN TEXEL FLOCK Foreword This will be the 12th draft sale of sheep from my Vorn Texel flock. It is now an annual event and I am very pleased that this year it will be conducted by Harrison and Hetherington at Borderway market. I think this sale is unique in the pedigree sheep world, in that ewes and hogs are sold with their lambs at foot, in working condition, unlike a lot of sales of overfed, overfat Texel gimmers that are half the size when in their working clothes some 6 months later. I decided a long time ago that I did not want to take part in a feeding contest to sell breeding females. I have ploughed a lone furrow in a lot of my sheep breeding, in that I have steered away from the big headed deep bodied type that seem to win shows. In my experience of lambing, once the head is out the rest is a doddle, so why breed sheep with large heads? Does size of head result in brainier sheep? Mine are brainy enough in that one ewe has found out that by turning the handle on the end of the creep feed with her nose it opens the gap and she can fill her belly with creep. I don’t know which one it is but I have a suspicion it must 470 who didn’t come running for her feed this morning. The most important trait in a ruminant meat animal is length, for it is the only way you can increase the weight of end product without increasing birth problems, other than selection for a shorter gestation period. I am pleased that after 20 plus years of breeding Texels, I have my own type of longer, angular and more refined sheep, yet with high muscle depth, gigot score and lean weight. I say high, but the EBV averages for the flock in these traits are well into the top 1%. I have been breeding Performance Recorded Texels since 2011 and am pleased that the flock is now the number one PR flock, based on the average EBV of last year’s lambs. Like most schemes run by committees and civil servants, it leaves a lot to be desired. I remember after taking sheep to be CT scanned for the first time in 2012, writing to the society of what a pity that such a wonderful machine was not being fully utilised, in that length of spine was not being measured and that eye muscle area was measured but not utilised other than in lean weight. Muscle depth from on farm scan is one dimensional, area from the CT scan is two dimensional and area x length is 3 dimensional or volume. Isn’t the whole idea of selective breeding of meat sheep to increase the volume of high price meat? Furthermore I have noticed that a lot of high muscle depth sheep are losing their width of loin. Selecting for just muscle depth can be just altering the shape of the eye muscle. I got so exasperated that last year I didn’t take my lambs to be CT scanned, but now this year, I understand that BASCO, Signet or AHDB (or whoever pulls the strings) will be introducing EBVs for eye muscle area and length of spine. Hoorah! I do always use this foreword to air my views! The sale sheep; I am sure this will be the best bunch of sheep I have ever offered, and look forward to meeting friends old and new on 13th of May. Please make yourselves known to me. I was very proud in July/Sept 2015 when Vorn Whisky Mac became the highest indexed Texel lamb. But in the October figures he dropped to third being surpassed by two lambs from the Antur flock belonging to Aberystwyth University who had been pioneers of performance recording and had over 20 years of records. I did a bit of research and found that they were both by a ram called Antur Uchelgeisol. So I did a bit more research and found that the word Uchelgeisiol meant ambitious or aspiring, but I still have no idea how to pronounce it, even though my maternal grandfather spoke Welsh. So from now on he’ll be Be Uch. Further research revealed that that of the 242 lambs born in the flock 64 were by Uch, and 19 of the top 20 EBVs were by him and the other three sires used had indexes of 388, 388 and 367 with accuracies of 95%, 98% and 98%. The top lamb, 227, was given a 10% inbreeding co-efficient by BASCO, which should have been 12.5 because his mother was a daughter 08082 and his sire was a grandson of her. . 227 had an eye muscle depth of 32.2mm at a weight of 48.5kg, which is as high a ratio as I had come across and the years of recording with BASCO by the Antur flock were bound to back up their EBVs. So a trip to Aberyswyth in late October. Elvis was still there! New manager Martin Davies who was Welsh did not know how to pronounce the Uch name nor know what it meant, and he didn’t know where Uch was; running with some commercial ewes he thought. But he had collected about a dozen lambs with the highest indexes into a pen and they looked like a bunch of store lambs that would make about £62.50 in Hereford market. 227 was lame and didn’t look much better than the rest. The flock wasn’t accredited. Let’s go and have some fish and chips at the seaside and go home. As we were about to leave I thanked Martin and thought about the inbreeding and the fact that he should breed better than himself and offered him half his asking price. A little bit of negotiating and the deal was done. A shot of metacam and his lameness disappeared. So we took him with us to a chip shop opposite Aberystwyth railway station. Eating our meal I started to think of a name for him beginning with W and a lorry pulled up in front of the station and all we could see was wyth railway station. Once I had him home I picked out 8 hogs and they ran with him and had to stay as an isolated group until he passed his second MV test. It was quite nerve racking awaiting the result, knowing if he failed he would be put down and the 8 females and their lambs would not be accredited. But it all turned out OK. His first lambs grew well and had cracking eye muscle depth ( with width of loin) resulting in him now being top UK PR sire. Last year, because of his MV accreditation, I was able to use him much more widely and he was used on the majority of the ewes. It is interesting that other than Uch, the other sires in his pedigree come from the Scottish borders, probably the cradle of Performance Recorded Texels.

The highest indexed lamb ever, Yardstick ticks all the boxes, he is on the right side of the road for ease of lambing and with a maternal ability EBV of 2.48 when 1.53 equals top 1%. There’s talk now of producing a terminal index and a maternal index and combining the two. Thus he will stand in good stead when we follow New Zealand down this road. Yardstick is somewhere near what I was aiming for when I started breeding Texels over 20 years ago, and it is interesting that 7 of the 8 animals in the above pedigree are Vorn sheep. One of the first lambs by War’orse, who was the longest ever measured Texel and had the highest ever eye muscle area when CT scanned in 2015. Yardstick comes from the most productive line in the flock going back to ‘Big Ears’ VJV03158, from which have come Three Oh Oh, Typecast, Ramsda and Vaurus, all successful sires in the flock. Because of all his Vorn blood I was not able to find enough unrelated ewes to use him on last year, but greater use will be made of him this year. His semen has already been used in two performance recorded New Zealand flocks at present and I am eagerly looking forward to the results of how he compares to their own sires.

Sells with a tremendous daughter of Yardstick, a twin to which is retained. Usar Friendly was my pick of the Drinkstone lambs when we swapped ram lambs in 2013.

Her dam sold in last year’s sale to Mat Frear for his Felton House flock. A maternal brother sold for 1040gns at NSA Ram Sale Builth Wells last year. Avon Vale Real Deal has been the most influential PR sire in the 6 years I have been performance recording. This daughter sells with a ram lamb by Wythaberyst who may well have as much influence as Real Deal if he continues to produce long, angular and heavy ram lambs like this one. Time will tell.

From the best female line in the best ever Texel flock; the original Annan flock of Keith Jamieson. Scientists have only recently discovered what livestock breeders have known for generations; the strength of the female line, as there are a couple of chromosomes passed on by the female in the nucleus of the egg, in the same way the Y chromosome is passed on to sons of males. She is a maternal sister to Vorn Shorn who won 1st prize as a lamb at Brecon, and the grand sire of Uncle John. Because this ewe is 10% inbred according to BASCO she should breed better than she looks when outcrossed. Her first lamb has an index of 490 and she is offered with one of her two Craig Farm Wizard daughters.

I went to the final Drinkstone dispersal sale in Carlisle just to buy her, the first female I have bought since the Annan female 15 years earlier. By Goldies Supreme and out of a full sister to Drinkstone Tasmania, the number 1 sire of 2014, with a muscle EBV of 7.28mm and index of 525. Her grand dam, PJP06073, was described to me by Arnold Park as the best ewe he had ever had. So like the Annan ewe, she is from the top female line of the top performance recorded flock. I was fortunate enough to buy her for one bid of 1700gns. She has not been so fortunate for me: Flushed three times, to no avail, but this year she has produced what I bought her for. Job done! She can now go and I will be retaining the two ewe lambs that will follow her through the ring. This ram is well on target to be the heaviest lamb yet in the flock at eight weeks. He looks like growing on and he should make one of the top weighted lambs yet at 21 weeks. If he has inherited the eye muscle from his sire the potential for this lamb is enormous and therefore I am offering a half share with a reserve. Unless other arrangements are made before the sale by prospective purchasers, I will retain possession of the lamb for this year, including having him scanned and supply the purchaser with semen, if produced, for the purchaser’s exclusive use. He will be available for the purchaser to use for mating between 19th September 2017 and 20th October 2017. The purchaser will then have full possession after the 2017 mating season.

Grand-dam, VJV080429, is the dam of Three Oh Oh and two 1st prize ewe lambs at Kington and Brecon shows. A half share in Vaurus was sold for 2500gns to the Ballaglonney flock and the first four sons to be sold came to 9500gns. This ewe produced her first lamb as a hogg last year and now has an index of over 500. This year she was scanned for two but produced triplets and although she had plenty of milk last year I would assume that, having only been fed for twins, it all proved too much and she has only been able to rear one lamb this year. Roxburgh Spitfire (sire) was the highest ever indexed ram lamb in 2011 and offered at the English National at Worcester. I had just started performance recording; he had a head like a donkey, but I was looking at his length, and asked Paul Phillips of the Kimbolton flock if he would like to buy him in partnership. We bought him for 3000gns but in his first winter he died at Paul’s from pasturella and I well remember saying to Paul, ‘If he doesn’t get something good enough to use in his place he will be no loss.’ He did with Three Oh Oh and Typecast both with superior figures and a bunch of big lengthy females that will breed to any ram.
