General Information & Sale Notes LOCATION: The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The Market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6. VIEWING - The Sale Sheep will be available for viewing at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on the morning of the sale. CONDITIONS OF SALE - Sold under the conditions of sale as recommended by The Livestock Auctioneers’ Association. METHOD OF SALE - All sheep will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers. COMMISSIONS - The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions. SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK - Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement. MV ACCREDITED - The Harold Texel Flock is MV Accredited. EXPORT - As of 1 January 2021, the rules for exporting sheep from the United Kingdom to Northern Ireland and the European Union have changed for moving breeding stock to Northern Ireland – NO Direct Export or Vendor Returns will be available. SALE FROM THE
HAROLD FLOCK FOREWORD The Harold flock started in 2012 with the purchase of two gimmers sired by Cairness Ronaldo son of Deverondale Perfection. The principle aim of the flock was to produce strong hard wearing Texel tups for our own use and to sell. Over the years we have grown the flock adding maternal lines from Nunstainton, Alwent, Welsh, Douganhill, Roxburgh, Greenarch and Eden Valley. We have used sire lines including Haddo Top Dog, Ettrick Rainbow Warrior, Knock Yankee, Craig Farm Wizard, Midlock Your The One and Haddo Balvenie. Our ewes have been selected for size, frame and ability to breed naturally and since our inception we have only had one vet assisted lambing and that was this year via caesarean section due to un-characteristically large single coming backwards. Fertility is uncompromisable with 90% of our flock lambing in the first cycle and scanning circa 185% annually. We started performance recording in 2018 with aim of improving the commercial performance of the flock for our buyers without damaging the phenotype of our flock, many of the ewes offered are in the top 10% of the breed and above. We have always produced our Texels under commercial conditions with no preferential treatment. We have culled hard against any problem traits to produce a very healthy, strong and functional flock. We are very much an unknown flock as we very rarely sell at public auction, this is testament to the sheep we have been producing as they have mostly been sold from home to repeat buyers. We have decided to sell our flock due to family and business reasons, a forced retirement due to ill health and a changing farming system has meant that the Texels are now offered for sale. We moved away from mules to a lower input commercial system, lambing 1300 ewes outdoors so we found the Texel as a terminal sire was less suited to this system. The sale is not a complete disper-sal in that we want to maintain our prefix and we are keeping all ewe lambs to be sold as shearlings next year and three older ewes as they are my children’s and....old habits die hard!! Flock Health The flock is MV accredited and we have always taken bio security very seriously and take part in the farm post-mortem screening, so all dead stock is post-mortemed. There has never been any iceberg diseases such as OPA, Johne’s or Borders, this flock has a full history of clean health. The flock is vaccinated with Heptivac-P, Enzo and Toxo.
