Notice to all Visitors and Traders
Please read and observe the following:
• Excessive dirty vehicles will not be allowed entry, therefore ensure vehicle is clean before arrival.
• All vehicles transporting livestock will be subject to a documentation check before entry to market site.
• All visitors and traders must ensure they wear clean clothing and footwear before entering market site.
• All visitors and traders using car park areas please use main entrance.
• Hauliers and farmers delivering livestock must disinfect their boots before and after loading or unloading.
• Livestock purchased or unsold will not be allowed to move unless an authorised “pass slip” has been issued by the main office.
• No livestock will be allowed to remain on the premises after a sale.
• Only staff, livestock hauliers, owners or their agents are permitted to load or unload livestock.
• Wash hands thoroughly when leaving pennage areas.
• Please observe our staff’s instructions at all times.

General Information & Sale Notes
LOCATION: The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6.

CONDITIONS OF SALE: The sale will be held subject to the Auction Rules and Conditions of Sale drawn up by the British Charolais Cattle Society (based on the National Beef Association Terms and Conditions of Sale).
The pedigree information is supplied by breeders to the Society and to their best knowledge and belief, the information contained therein is true and correct. The Purchaser shall at his expense have the right to verify the parentage of his purchases and rescind the sale contract if within two months from date of sale the parentage is found to be incorrect and thereafter no claim whatsoever shall lie against the Vendor in respect of such matters.
INSURANCE: A representative of H & H Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks.
METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.
COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.
REGISTRATIONS: All stock in the Sale are registered with the British Charolais Cattle Society.
TRANSFERS: Official Pedigree Transfer Certificates will be dealt with by the Auctioneers and the Breed Society as soon as possible after the Sale.
Full Pedigrees will be transferred free of charge to all MEMBERS.
NBA WARRANTIES: This sale is also held subject to the Special Terms and Conditions of Sale recommended for Sales of Pedigree Beef Cattle by the National Beed Association. The preparation of these Terms and Conditions has proved a lengthy and costly process and, in order to defray the legal and other costs involved, and to provide a continuing source of revenue to assist the Association in its vital work for Pedigree Cattle Breeders, the Council of the Association has decided that a special levy, amounting to £5 per male and £5 per female head/lot sold (plus VAT) shall be charged to each purchaser.
SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK: Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement.
ANIMAL WELFARE: Vendors and Purchasers should note the CODE OF PRACTICE published by the Livestock Auctioneers’ Market Committee for England and Wales IS OPERATIVE IN BORDERWAY MART and that weakly, unhealthy or injured stock will be refused entry by the Auctioneers. Enquiries should be directed through the market office to the Auctioneers’ ANIMAL HEALTH and WELFARE OFFICER (Mr Andrew Templeton).
Information for Vendors
PRE-SALE INSPECTION: All animals entered for sale must be available for inspection as per the timetable. A veterinary officer, appointed by the Society, will check the animals teeth and in the case of bulls, testicles measure up to the minimum BCCS standard – details below. They will also check for any contagious diseases. The officially appointed BCCS stewards will check the animals for any patent defects, such as lameness, etc. The animals will also be weighed to make sure that they comply with the Charolais Society minimum weight for age – details below.
Please ensure all cattle passport documentation is handed to the Market Sales Office upon arrival. Failure to do so or if for any reason the paperwork does not correspond to the cattle being offered for sale, such animals will not be put forward for the auction.
SOCIETY DISCLAIMER: “All animals are subject to a pre-sale inspection to provide a minimum standard, and animals are sold with all patent defects, and any subsequent claim after the fall of the hammer is against the vendor and not The British Charolais Cattle Society Ltd.”
MINIMUM SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE: All bulls offered for sale must have a minimum scrotal circumference of: 13-18 months 34cm, >18-24 months 36cm and >24months 38cm. Any bulls found to be below the minimum Society standards will be rejected by the vet.
MINIMUM WEIGHT FOR AGE: The Charolais Society have adopted the minimum weight for age scheme. This scale is printed below and/or available from the Society office, however it is considered that weight alone should not be the leading criteria and conformation should be taken into account. Therefore, a bull of good conformation but under the scale weight would not necessarily be rejected and similarly a bull which has attained the scale weight but of poor con- formation may be rejected.
HALTER TRAINING: Every animal entered for the Show and Sale, both male and female must be adequately trained to lead by halter and must be prepared for inspection and show (if applicable) unless exempted by the Stewards, or previously notified as un-haltered (un-haltered animals cannot be shown). Evidence of faults of temperament, vices etc., may lead to disqualification from the sale. All halter trained animals entered into the sale, must be provided with a serviceable halter, which will become the property of the purchaser.
IDENTIFICATION MARKS: All cattle entered for the sale will have their UK tags examined as an integral part of the pre-sale inspection procedure. Any tags found to be faulty, incorrect or illegible will be rejected from the sale. Vendors are therefore urged, in their best interests, to examine the UK tags of sale cattle before the animals(s) leave their farm, so that faulty or missing tags can be replaced in accordance with the required Society procedures.
DRUGS: The use of drugs is totally banned, as undernoted:
1. Preparation for Sale. Any drug which would affect the weight for age, conformation or growth of hair.
2. Presentation for Sale. Any drug which would affect soundness or temperament at Inspection, Judging or Auction Sale.
DNA PARENTAGE VERIFICATION: All Charolais bulls sold through BCCS auspices sales must be sire verified prior to sale.
BVD VACCINATIONS: All Charolais cattle sold through BCCS auspices sales must be vaccinated against BVD.
SOCIETY RULES: The sale will be held subject to the Auction Rules, Conditions of Sale and Special Regulations of the British Charolais Cattle Society.
MINIMUM UPSET PRICE: The minimum upset price of 4,000gns will be set for all Bulls.
RESERVE PRICES: Vendors shall have the right to refuse to accept the final bid for their animals.
The auctioneers reserve the right to charge half commission on the amount of the final bid in the case of animals which fail to reach the Vendors reserve price.
No animal may be sold privately before being passed through the Auction Ring and FULL COMMISSION will be charged on the sale of any animal sold by private treaty after the auction. All such transactions MUST BE PASSED THROUGH THE AUCTIONEERS OFFICE.
All animals will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and a commission of 5.5% will be charged by the Auctioneers on all sales and a further lairage levy of 1% will be charged.

DEFERRAL WARRANTY – PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING
Appendix from National Beef Association bull breeding warranty.
4.2 Trial Period The purchaser shall give the bull sufficient time and opportunity to prove itself capable of getting stock by natural service while applying the standards of good husbandry and management as per Appendix A and, subject to clause 4.3 hereof, in any event within six calendar months of the date of sale, or within six calendar months of attaining the age of fourteen months (whichever is the later) (THE TRIAL PERIOD). A claim for infertility or incapability will not normal- ly be accepted in the case of an inexperienced bull until he has been allowed a minimum of three natural heat cycles with the females.
4.3 Deferring the trial period. If upon purchase of the bull it is found impracticable for the purchaser to try the bull fairly within the Trial Period stated in Clause 4.2 above due to the Purchasers normal calving programme, the Purchaser shall on the day of the sale, or within the next seven days,give the Auctioneers notice in writing of the month in which it is proposed to commence using the bull. At the discretion of the vendor (in consultation with the Auctioneers, if applicable) the Vendor may defer the date of the commencement of the trial period of three calendar months (THE DEFERRAL PERIOD) Acceptance or otherwise of the Purchaser’s written request, shall be conveyed to the Purchaser by the Auctioneer in writing, within seven days of the request being made.
If the Trial Period is deferred the bull should not be used during the Deferral Period

ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVS)
The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait.
ACCURACY
An accuracy value (Acc) is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives.
CALVING EASE
Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.
DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny. Using a bull in the Top 1% for CE direct (+16.7) is predicted to result in approximately 15% fewer assisted calvings in 2 year old heifers compared with using a bull in the Bottom 1% (-20 2). This range is predicted to be smaller in cows. Remember that the dam’s genetics and management are significant factors influencing calving ease in any mating.
DTRS: Daughter’s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving.
BIRTH AND FERTILITY
GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation lengths which generally relate to easier calving and increased growth after birth.
BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.
SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny.
GROWTH
MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it affects the 200-day weight of their calves.
200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages.
400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight.
600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.
MWT: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age. Moderate or larger EBVs are generally more favourable.
CARCASE
EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals.
FAT: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity.
RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size.
IMF%: Intra-muscular Fat Percent EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intra-muscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.
Terminal Index
The BCCS Terminal index is aimed at a commercial herd using Charolais bulls over large framed, mixed breed cows to breed steers and heifers to finish at 18 months of age. All progeny are destined for slaughter and no replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease while finishing steers at around 680 kg live weight (375 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase.
Use this index in a commercial herd to produce progeny for slaughter. The index has moderate emphasis on easier calving (ie getting a live calf with minimal human interference) while producing calves that will then grow quickly to market specifications at around 18 months of age. The index is focused on slaughter animals and does not account for maternal traits and is therefore not suited to breeding replacement females.
If you are using smaller framed cows or heifers in your herd, then you should also put extra emphasis on a higher calving ease direct EBV when selecting a sire using this index.
Self Replacing Index
The BCCS Self Replacing index is aimed at a Charolais herd breeding steers to finish at 16 months of age. Replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while finishing steers for slaughter at around 680 kg live weight (375 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system.
This Self Replacing index is also suitable to using Charolais sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd. There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour.
Use this index in both commercial and pedigree herds where you are balancing the requirements of selecting replacement females while also producing animals for slaughter.
Charolais EBV ratios have been incorporated with the Estimated Breeding Values (EBV) to assist breeders in making their selection decisions when purchasing Charolais cattle. The Charolais EBV ratio for each trait shows that animal`s breeding value for that trait in relation to the current published breed average. The average for each trait is 100, and the approximate range between the bottom 1% and the top 1% is between 70 and 130.

What is Myostatin?
Myostatin is a gene that influences the production of proteins which control muscle development. When an animal is identified as having one of the mutations it means that they have inactive genes which do not control muscle growth as effectively, this can result in increased muscle mass. Currently in cattle, there are 19 known mutations of the gene and after extensive testing for the nine most common varients, we have concluded that the British Charolais cattle population only contains two - F94L & Q204X.
Why are we testing for Myostatin?
Knowing the myostatin status of your animals will help you to select bulls with the most appropriate myostatin traits for your breeding programme. This will lead to better calving ease and help with the ever-present trend to improve carcase conformation and quality. However, it is just one tool which should be used in conjunction with the wider information available such as Estimated Breeding Values (EBV’s) – which predict the performance of the animal based on its back pedigree, accurate measurements and the performance of its herd mates – and your own judgement on type and pedigree.
How are these genes inherited?
All reproducing species have two copies of each gene – called alleles. If your Charolais has one copy of the myostatin variant (one allele) it is classed as heterozygous, if it has two copies (two allele) it is classed as homozygous.

Step 1
