PRE-SALE INSPECTION - Blonde Cattle: Thursday 28th February at 4.30pm. Hereford Cattle: Friday 1st March at 9.30am. Beef Shorthorn Cattle: Friday 1st March at 10.00am. HOTELS: There are many hotels within the area, ranging from four star to excellent Bed and Breakfast accommodation, a list of which may be found on page 4 of the catalogue. CONDITIONS OF SALE: This Sale is held subject to the conditions of Sale drawn up by the NBA and the Auctioneers’ General Conditions of Sale, both available on request. In the event of any discrepancy between the two sets of conditions, the NBA Conditions of Sale shall prevail. INSURANCE: A representative of H&H Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks. METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers. COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions. REGISTRATIONS: All stock in the Sale are registered with the respective breed societies. TRANSFERS: BLONDE CATTLE: a fee of £15 + VAT per lot will be charged to the Purchaser. HEREFORD CATTLE: a fee of £24 + VAT will be charged to the Vendor. BEEF SHORTHORN CATTLE: all transfers will be automatically processed for all members of the Society. All Bulls entered for the Sale, MUST BE ADEQUATELY TRAINED TO LEAD BY HALTER and must be provided with a serviceable halter, which will become the property of the purchaser. All other show animals must be halter led. TATTOO MARKS/UK TAGS - All cattle entered for the Sale will have their tatoo marks/ UK Tags examined. Any marks found to have faulty, incorrect or illegible marks will be REJECTED from the Sale. Vendors are therefore urged, in their own best interests, to examine the tattoo marks of Sale cattle before the animal(s) leave their farm, so that faulty marks can be rectified in accordance with the required Society procedures. CATTLE PASSPORTS: Please ensure all passport documentation is handed to the Market Sale Office upon arrival. Failure to do so or if for any reason the paperwork does not correspond to the cattle being offered for sale, such animals will not be put forward for the auction. The proceeds of sale are guaranteed by the Auctioneers, who will account to Vendors on the day of the Sale. Such guarantee, however, does not extend to the animals sold for export, to which special conditions apply. SOCIETY SALE LEVY: Will be charged on the following breeds and deducted from the Vendor’s statement before settlement and paid direct to the respective breed society. BLONDE CATTLE 2%; BEEF SHORTHORN CATTLE 3%. RESERVE PRICES: Vendors shall have the right to refuse to accept the final bid for their animals. The auctioneers reserve the right to charge half commission on the amount of the final bid in the case of animals which fail to reach the Vendors reserve price. All animals will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and a commission of 5% will be charged by the Auctioneers on all sales. No animals may be sold privately before being passed through the Auction Ring and FULL COMMISSION will be charged on the sale of any animal sold by private treaty after the auction. UNDERSTANDING THE BREEDPLAN PERFORMANCE RECORDING INFORMATION IN THIS CATALOGUE Only Hereford GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs or INTERIM EBVs with Accuracy (Acc) can be validly compared between herds. ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVS) The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait. ACCURACY An accuracy value is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information
that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or it's relatives. Accuracy below 75% should be considered low.
CALVING EASE Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information.
More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.
DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny. DTRS: Daughter’s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier
calving.
BIRTH AND FERTILITY GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter
gestation lengths which generally relate to easier calving and increased growth after birth.
BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age.
The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.
SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity.
Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny. GROWTH MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV is
indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it affects the 200-day weight of their calves.
200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300
days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages.
400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500
days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight.
600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900
days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.
MWT: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of
age. Smaller, or more moderate EBVs are generally more favourable.
11 CARCASE CWT: Carcase Weight EBV (kg) estimates the genetic difference in carcase weight at a standard age of
650 days.
EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area of a 300kg dressed
carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals.
FAT: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the rib in a 300kg dressed
carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity.
RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a
300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size.
IMF%: Intra-muscular Fat Percent EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of
intra-muscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.
Indexes combine the EBVs with economic information for specific market and production systems to
rank animals based on relative profit values.
Terminal index
The Hereford Terminal index is aimed at a commercial herd using Hereford bulls over dairy cross cows to breed steers and heifers to turn off at 16 months of age. All progeny are destined for slaughter and no replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease while finishing steers at around 600 kg live weight (330 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system. Use this index in a commercial herd to produce progeny for slaughter. The index has moderate emphasis on easier calving (ie getting a live calf with minimal human interference) while producing calves that will then grow quickly to market specifications at around 16 months of age. The index is focused on slaughter animals and does not account for maternal traits and is therefore not suited to breeding replacement females. If you are using smaller framed cows or heifers in your herd, then you should also put extra emphasis on a higher Calving Ease Direct EBV when selecting a sire using this index. Self Replacing index
The Hereford Self Replacing index is aimed at a Hereford herd selecting replacement females from within the herd while breeding steers and excess heifers to turn off at 22 months of age. There is emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while also looking to finish steers for slaughter at around 620 kg live weight (320 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase. This Self Replacing index is also suitable to using Hereford sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd. There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour. Use this index in both commercial and pedigree herds where you are balancing the requirements of selecting replacement females while also producing animals for slaughter. “SUPERIOR CARCASE SIRE” The Hereford Cattle Society is offering a financial incentive to users of certified “Superior Carcase Sires”. These are bulls which have been identified from their Breedplan records as having potential to produce improved carcase quality in their progeny. Purchasers of a “Superior Carcase Sire” will be eligible to claim £5.00 per calf on the progeny of the bull - confined to a maximum of 100 calves during a claim period of up to 4 years (3 crops of calves) from the purchase date of the bull. The incentive may only be claimed once in the bull’s life and is confined to the original purchaser. Claims to be submitted by the owner of the bull at 6 monthly intervals for calves up to 6 months of age by 30th June and the 31st December each year – no payments will be made in respect of any calf that is over 6 months of age at the time the claim is received. All claims must be supported by an official list obtained by the owner of the bull from, in the case of England, Scotland & Wales – BCMS (British Cattle Movement Service) and in Northern Ireland – APHIS (Animal & Public Health Information Service). Calves will be subject to a random DNA test for sire verification and checks will be made with the appropriate authorities that the bull was present on the farm at the time of conception of the calves.

BLONDE SALE – Notice to Vendors PRE-SALE INSPECTION: All animals entered for the sale must be available for inspection in the Sale Premises as per the timetable of events. An Official Inspector, appointed by the Sale Society may order the rejection of any animal which, in his opinion, is below the required standard of conformation and / or condition and does not represent a good specimen of the Breed. IF THE INSPECTORS CONSIDER THERE HAS BEEN ANY PRE-INSPECTION PREPERATION DESIGNED TO DISGUISE AN UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION THAT ANIMAL WILL BE REJECTED. VETERINARY INSPECTION: The Veterinary Officer will examine all animals forward for general, health and genetic defects, and any animal with a genetic fault, disease or disorder will be REJECTED. Animals will be placed in a crush for this inspection - as required by the Veterinary Officer. The Veterinary Inspection will form an integral part of the pre-sale inspection procedure. ANY ANIMAL REJECTED DURING THE PRE-SALE INSPECTION WILL BE OFFERED IN SALE ORDER, BUT ONLY AT THE AUCTIONEERS DISCRETION. CARDS WILL BE DISPLAYED ABOVE ALL REJECTED STOCK WITH REASON FOR REJECTION. ALL BULLS - entered for the Sale MUST HAVE ACHIEVED A MINIMUM WEIGHT OF 500KG AT THE TIME OF SALE and Vendors will be responsible for the provision of certification of such minimum weight to the Panel of Inspectors, if required. Profit from EBVS A great new tool is now available to beef producers and breeders to help them select productive breeding animals with confidence. This development comes as part of MLC’s “Beef breeder” Service. Records on breeding animals are now presented as ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVs) and these describe the animal and how it will breed. EBVs are the recognised method for describing beef cattle performance and are now widely used in many leading cattle countries. EBVs are quoted in the measuring units e.g. kg. These are various key features:
All Comparisons are against a base figure for the breed. The average
l
of the breed in 1980 was chosen, where the average is described as zero.
Any animal with a plus value is above the breed base (heavier, fatter,
l
more muscled, etc.) and any animal with a minus value is below the breed base (lighter, less fat or less muscular, etc.)
The EBVs are built up from records on the animal concerned, its
l
parents, offspring (if any) and other relatives. So, they are very robust. Using EBVs takes out the confusing effects of different managements, herds, seasons and years, so that animals can be compared across a breed with confidence. Measures with very low (less than 20 per cent) levels of accuracy are not published.

QR CODES In this catalogue we have printed QR code for each animal, this will take you to the web page which will give you full information on pedigree, bar charts and photographs if available
Step 1 Download and install a QR code app on your smartphone if you don't yet have one. Open your App Store, Market, Marketplace or App World application (for the iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry platforms, respectively). Step 2 Search for "QR code reader," and then download and install a free app. The app should be named something to the effect of "QR Code Scanner" or "QR Scanner." There are paid versions of these kinds of apps, but the free ones work just as well. Step 3 Open the QR barcode app on your smartphone, and choose "scan from camera" or "scan QR code" from the main menu. A new window should open with a square in the middle of it. Step 4 Center the QR code in the middle of the square that's currently displayed by your QR barcode app. The app should automatically take a picture of the QR code for you when it has finished scanning the code. UNDERSTANDING THE BREEDPLAN PERFORMANCE RECORDING INFORMATION IN THIS CATALOGUE Only Beef Shorthorn GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs or INTERIM EBVs with Accuracy (Acc) can be validly compared between herds.
ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVS)
The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait.
ACCURACY
An accuracy value is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or it's relatives. Accuracy below 75% should be considered low.
CALVING EASE Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving. DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny. DTRS: Daughter’s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving.
BIRTH AND FERTILITY
GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation lengths which generally relate to easier calving and increased growth after birth.
BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny.
GROWTH
MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it affects the 200-day weight of their calves.
200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages. 400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight. 600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. MWT: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age. Smaller, or more moderate EBVs are generally more favourable.

CARCASE
CWT: Carcase Weight EBV (kg) estimates the genetic difference in carcase weight at a standard age of 650 days. EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. FAT: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity. RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size. IMF%: Intra-muscular Fat Percent EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intra-muscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.
Terminal index
The Shorthorn Terminal index is aimed at a commercial herd using Shorthorn bulls over dairy cross cows to breed steers and heifers to turn off at 19 months of age. All progeny are destined for slaughter and no replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease while finishing steers at around 580 kg live weight (310 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system. Use this index in a commercial herd to produce progeny for slaughter. The index has moderate emphasis on easier calving (ie getting a live calf with minimal human interference) while producing calves that will then grow quickly to market specifications at around 19 months of age. The index is focused on slaughter animals and does not account for maternal traits and is therefore not suited to breeding replacement females. If you are using smaller framed cows or heifers in your herd, then you should also put extra emphasis on a higher Calving Ease Direct EBV when selecting a sire using this index.
Self Replacing index
The Shorthorn Self Replacing index is aimed at a Shorthorn herd selecting replacement females from within the herd while breeding steers and excess heifers to turn off at 19 months of age. There is emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while also looking to finish steers for slaughter at around 580 kg live weight (310 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase. This Self Replacing index is also suitable to using Shorthorn sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd. There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour. Use this index in both commercial and pedigree herds where you are balancing the requirements of selecting replacement females while also producing animals for slaughter.
