General Information & Sale Notes LOCATION: The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6. Timetable of Events: Thursday 23rd February

HOTELS: There are many hotels within the area, ranging from four star to excellent Bed and Breakfast accommodation, a list of which may be found on page 4 of the catalogue. CONDITIONS OF SALE: This Sale is held subject to the conditions of Sale drawn up by the NBA and the Auctioneers’ General Conditions of Sale, both available on request. In the event of any discrepancy between the two sets of conditions, the NBA Conditions of Sale shall prevail. INSURANCE: A representative of H&H Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks. METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers. COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions. REGISTRATIONS: All stock in the Sale are registered with the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society. TRANSFERS: Official Pedigree Transfer Certificates will be dealt with by the Breed Society as soon as possible after the Sale. UPSET PRICE - There will be an ‘Upset Price' of 1500gs on each bull entered for the sale, if no opening bid of 1500gs is received for any particular lot, the animal concerned will pass out the sale ring unsold. SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK: Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement. ANIMAL WELFARE: Vendors and Purchasers should note the CODE OF PRACTICE published by the Livestock Auctioneers’ Market Committee for England and Wales IS OPERATIVE IN BORDERWAY MART and that weakly, unhealthy or injured stock will be refused entry by the Auctioneers. Important Notice to Vendors ARRIVAL OF STOCK - As per timetable of events at the beginning of the sale catalogue. PRE-SALE INSPECTION: All bulls entered will be veterinary inspected at the market. All entries must be penned at least 2 hours prior to the commencement of the inspection. Bulls not presented for the inspection will not be accepted for the sale. Animals will be inspected in the sale premises and, by a ruling of the Directors, the inspector(s) is empowered to instruct any exhibitor to withdraw from the show and sale any animal they consider not to be of the required standard. Bulls will be inspected by a vet appointed by the Society. Bulls not attaining the required minimum testicle size, or displaying irregular testicular conformation or displaying overshot or undershot jaws will be rejected from the sale. BREEDPLAN WEIGHTS & HEIGHTS - All bulls will be weighed by Officials and the Official weights will be displayed above each pen. All Bulls entered for the Sale, MUST BE ADEQUATELY TRAINED TO LEAD BY HALTER and must be provided with a serviceable halter, which will become the property of the purchaser. All other show animals must be halter led. TATTOO MARKS/UK TAGS - All cattle entered for the Sale will have their tatoo marks/ UK Tags examined. Any marks found to have faulty, incorrect or illegible marks will be REJECTED from the Sale. Vendors are therefore urged, in their own best interests, to examine the tattoo marks of Sale cattle before the animal(s) leave their farm, so that faulty marks can be rectified in accordance with the required Society procedures. The proceeds of sale are guaranteed by the Auctioneers, who will account to Vendors on the day of the Sale. Such guarantee, however, does not extend to the animals sold for export, to which special conditions apply. SOCIETY SALE LEVY: By a ruling of the Directors of the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society levy of 3% of the net (after deduction of auctioneers commission) will be deducted from the vendors statements before settlement and paid to the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society. RESERVE PRICES: Vendors shall have the right to refuse to accept the final bid for their animals. The auctioneers reserve the right to charge half commission on the amount of the final bid in the case of animals which fail to reach the Vendors reserve price. All animals will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and a commission of 5% will be charged by the Auctioneers on all sales. No animals may be sold privately before being passed through the Auction Ring and FULL COMMISSION will be charged on the sale of any animal sold by private treaty after the auction. All such transactions MUST BE PASSED THROUGH THE AUCTIONEERS’ OFFICE. STRAW: A limited amount of bedding straw will be provided by the Auctioneers free of charge. Additional straw, if required, may be purchased from the Auctioneers.

BEEF SHORTHORN CATTLE SOCIETY SALE REGULATIONS The Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society has previously sanctioned the use of Maine Anjou cattle (a French breed of Shorthorn derivatives) in a controlled breed improvement programme. That successful programme is now complete and has been closed (Oct 1999) All calves born on or after 1st January 2001 shall be registered in the Coates Herd Book (Beef) with no mention of percentage (pertaining to Maine Anjou influence) provided that both parents are previously registered in Coates Herd book (Beef). Purchasers who are interested in the influence of Maine Anjou in any prospective purchase are invited to inspect the four-generation pedigree certificate, or contact the Secretary for further details. Cattle born before 1st January 2001 will continue to display the percentage of pure Shorthorn blood on their certificate. Other Society rules as follows • By a ruling of the Directors of the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society a levy of 3% of the net sale price will be deducted from the vendors statements and paid to the Beef shorthorn Cattle Society. • The Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society operates a compulsory health testing scheme at all Society sales as follows: Compulsory Health Testing for Beef Shorthorn Society Sales “All animals entered for Society sales must come from herds which are members of a Checs approved health scheme and have been testing for BVD and Johnes for a minimum of 12 months. Animals must be individually blood tested no more than 3 months prior to the sale for BVD, (antigen AND antibody), and IBR antibody unless coming from a herd which has accredited status for the relevant disease. Accredited herds do not need individual animal tests for the diseases for which they are accredited. All animals whether from an accredited herd or not must be vaccinated against BVD. Animals testing antigen positive (PI) for BVD will not be accepted for sale. The results of the blood tests or accredited status must be displayed at the sale on a health pen card supplied by a Checs approved laboratory. All animals must have an individual pen card. No other health information will be allowed to be displayed.

UNDERSTANDING THE BREEDPLAN PERFORMANCE RECORDING INFORMATION IN THIS CATALOGUE Only Beef Shorthorn GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs or INTERIM EBVs with Accuracy (Acc) can be validly compared between herds. ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVS) The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait. ACCURACY An accuracy value is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or it's relatives. Accuracy below 75% should be considered low. CALVING EASE Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving. DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny. DTRS: Daughter’s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving. BIRTH AND FERTILITY GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation lengths which generally relate to easier calving and increased growth after birth.
BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.
SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny.
GROWTH MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it affects the 200-day weight of their calves.
200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages.
400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight.
600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.
MWT: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age. Smaller, or more moderate EBVs are generally more favourable.
12 CARCASE CWT: Carcase Weight EBV (kg) estimates the genetic difference in carcase weight at a standard age of 650 days.
EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals.
FAT: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity.
RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size.
IMF%: Intra-muscular Fat Percent EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intra-muscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.
Terminal index The Shorthorn Terminal index is aimed at a commercial herd using Shorthorn bulls over dairy cross cows to breed steers and heifers to turn off at 19 months of age. All progeny are destined for slaughter and no replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease while finishing steers at around 580 kg live weight (310 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system. Use this index in a commercial herd to produce progeny for slaughter. The index has moderate emphasis on easier calving (ie getting a live calf with minimal human interference) while producing calves that will then grow quickly to market specifications at around 19 months of age. The index is focused on slaughter animals and does not account for maternal traits and is therefore not suited to breeding replacement females. If you are using smaller framed cows or heifers in your herd, then you should also put extra emphasis on a higher Calving Ease Direct EBV when selecting a sire using this index. Self Replacing index The Shorthorn Self Replacing index is aimed at a Shorthorn herd selecting replacement females from within the herd while breeding steers and excess heifers to turn off at 19 months of age. There is emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while also looking to finish steers for slaughter at around 580 kg live weight (310 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase. This Self Replacing index is also suitable to using Shorthorn sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd. There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour. Use this index in both commercial and pedigree herds where you are balancing the requirements of selecting replacement females while also producing animals for slaughter.

INDIVIDUAL HEALTH DECLARATIONS – SUPPORTING THE PURCHASE OF HEALTHY STOCK All cattle with individual health declarations should have an A3 copy, signed by the testing laboratory, for display in the sale pen, and an A4 copy containing more detailed information to be passed on to the purchaser. An example certificate is shown below and an explanatory note given of what information is contained on a pen card. 1. The diseases are listed in column (1). The TB testing interval is given beside the TB title if known. 2. Herd accreditation is shown in column (2). Herds that are accredited for BVD, IBR or leptospirosis have a
white coloured box in this column containing the number of years the herd has been accredited. The herd’s Johne’s risk level is shown, along with the number of years the herd has been at this level. Only Johne’s risk level 1 herds are given a white box. When provided, the date of the last clear herd TB test is displayed.
3. Results for individual testing, if done, are shown in column (3) and are colour-coded as follows: Antibody negative IBR or Leptospira hardjo antibody positive BVD antibody positive Antibody testing must be carried out within 3 months of the date of sale. If not from a BVD accredited herd, BVD antibody and virus testing is required. Bulls with positive BVD antibody titres (green box) and no known history should not be used for 10 weeks after testing as they can carry the virus after infection. Pregnant females that test positive for antibodies to BVD will not be given pen cards unless the animal was known to be antibody positive or fully vaccinated prior to service.
4. Vaccination details are given in column (4). Where marker vaccination has been given for IBR, this is indicated. Further details on vaccination are given on the accompanying A4 sheet.

Example certificate for a bull from a herd accredited for BVD & carrying the lowest risk of being infected with Johne’s. The bull has tested clear of IBR & leptospirosis and been vaccinated against these diseases and BVD. This information is intended as a guide to the cattle health declaration. It is important to remember that there are no absolute guarantees of freedom from disease. All newly purchased stock should be routinely isolated and tested as required before introducing them to existing stock. If in doubt ask for advice on biosecurity from your own or health scheme vets. Cattle health declarations and guidance have been developed by an all industry stakeholder group facilitated by the NFUS. All testing has been carried out by a CHeCS registered laboratory to ensure the highest level of assurance.

CHECS JOHNE’S PROGRAMME The CHeCS Johne’s programme changed on 1st January 2013 to a graded system (see table), designed to enable herds to maintain or move towards clear herd tests. This is achieved through a combination of testing and the implementation of a management programme. It is essential for herds within risk levels 1 to 4 to have a health plan in place covering the control of Johne’s disease. The health plan must be updated annually and endorsed by both vet and farmer. Herds without an appropriate health plan or following the rules of the CHeCS scheme will have Risk Level 5 status.
Status
Definition
Risk Level 1:
This is directly equivalent to the previous CHeCS Accredited free status. Level 1 status is associated with the lowest risk source when buying in stock. Risk Level 1 status is achieved after 3 clear consecutive herd tests.
Risk Level 2:
Herds with level 2 status have had one or two clear consecutive herd tests.
Risk Level 3:
Herds with level 3 status have reactors identified at the annual herd test, but these are no more than 3% of the animals tested.
Risk Level 4:
Herds with level 4 status have reactors identified at the annual herd test, and these are more than 3% of the animals tested.
Risk Level 5:
Any herd that is not carrying out the required testing or does not have a suitable health plan in place automatically falls into this category. Level 5 status is considered to be the greatest risk source when buying in stock.

In this catalogue we have printed QR code for each animal, this will take you to the web page which will give you full information on pedigree, bar charts and photographs if available Step 1 Download and install a QR code app on your smartphone if you don't yet have one. Open your App Store, Market, Marketplace or App World application (for the iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry platforms, respectively). Step 2 Search for "QR code reader," and then download and install a free app. The app should be named something to the effect of "QR Code Scanner" or "QR Scanner." There are paid versions of these kinds of apps, but the free ones work just as well. Step 3 Open the QR barcode app on your smartphone, and choose "scan from camera" or "scan QR code" from the main menu. A new window should open with a square in the middle of it. Step 4 Center the QR code in the middle of the square that's currently displayed by your QR barcode app. The app should automatically take a picture of the QR code for you when it has finished scanning the code. A new pop-up menu will appear, with the QR code information on it. Step 5 Click the link that was embedded in the QR code, this will direct you to the Society website.
