“Fitness for You” October 2021 Virtual Fitness Descriptions:
Stability Strong with Shannon: Proper posture and alignment are the focus of this low impact class. Participants will perform common functional movements, finding efficacy in form, with the purpose of creating muscle memory to help prevent injury during daily activities. Light to heavy weights and a mat used.
Fall Functional Fit: Focus| Hip Stability with Shannon: Fall into fitness with functional training! Functional movement involves a combination of muscles and joints that are required to complete daily tasks. In this class, participants will focus on skills that are designed to increase hip stability and strengthen the hips as well as skills designed to increase mind-body connection. Light to heavy weights will be used.
Total Body Strength with Ashley: Join this high-energy, highintensity interval class to kick off the weekend! Intervals of 45 seconds of work followed by 15-second recovery cycles. This is a low-impact, cardio-strength workout you don’t want to miss! Medium to heavy weights and a mat used.
All levels are welcome!
Cardio Up, Abs Down with Ashley: Practice mobility and stability during this cardiovascular and abdominal workout that will feature standing exercises in upright position and corefocused exercises on the floor! Intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 10-second recovery periods will be explored. Don’t miss this class that’s geared to energize the body before the weekend! A mat is suggested. Yoga R&R with Shannon: “Restore” and “Rejuvenate” the mind, body, and spirit with this Hatha-based Yoga practice! The intention is for participants to leave class feeling calm and refreshed. No Yoga experience is necessary. A yoga mat is suggested; Yoga blocks optional. Pilates Strong with Charissa: If you’re looking for a lowimpact, high intensity workout that’s easy on the joints, look no further! Pilates is a mind-body class that focuses on 6 principles: control, concentration, centering, precision, flow and breath. Pilates is designed to strengthen the body from the “powerhouse” or trunk and includes lengthening and strengthening the body simultaneously. Practiced by professional dancers, gymnasts, circus performers, celebrities and athletes, this is an experience that you don’t want to miss! No Pilates experience necessary. A mat is suggested. *Family Work-Life Edition*Family Rhythm Chair Fitness with Charissa: In recognition of “Family Work-Life Month”, grab a chair and let’s get busy! The entire family can join in on this nonstop high-energy experience! Participants can expect to increase heart rate, motor skills and mood for an unparalleled chair fitness workout! Mobility + Low-Impact Tabata with Ashley: Increase aerobic and anaerobic capacity with this standing Tabata workout! No need for a mat as exercises will be performed upright in intervals of 20 seconds of hard work followed by 10second intervals of recovery. Tabata is a form of high intensity interval (HIIT) training that will increase heart rate, metabolism and shed fat in a short amount of time. Give your mundane routine a jolt with this calorie-blasting class! No equipment needed. Some exercise experience is suggested. Backside Bootcamp + Bands with Charissa: It’s all about the glutes during this workout featuring loop bands! This class will involve the hip flexors, which play a huge role in glute development, and include the inner and outer thighs. Tighten and tone the buttocks for a healthier spine and stronger body! Medium to strong resistance bands and a mat will be used.
Floor, Core & More with Charissa: Who says you can’t get fit on the floor?! Engaging in abdominal, strength and cardiovascular exercises on the floor, participants can expect a sweat-inducing, fat blasting, total body workout experience! Light to medium weights and a mat will be used. Workplace Workout Chair Tabata with Ashley: Using light weights and a chair, participants that join this class can expect exercises performed in 20-second intervals of hard work followed by 10-second intervals of recovery. This Family Work-Life Month edition of chair fitness is sure to invoke new possibilities for desk workouts on the job! Offering a fun, flexible alternative to your fitness regimen. Battleground Bootcamp + Bands with Charissa: Life will present some battlefield moments but have no fear ”Battleground Bootcamp” is here! In intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 10-second rest periods, participants will engage in various exercises designed to increase strength and bone health. This low-impact, high-intensity class is sure to cause a sweat! Loop bands of light to strong resistance will be utilized. A mat is also suggested. Athletes for Yoga with Shannon: This non-traditional Yoga class increases flexibility and strength for a healthier body! Studies have shown that athletes can benefit from adding Yoga to their training regimen. In joining this Hatha-based practice, participants can also gain and/or increase balance, mobility and endurance. A Yoga mat is suggested. Core Circuit + Pillow/Cushion with Ashley: Word is that a strong core makes a strong body! The core consists of pelvic floor muscles, the transverses abdominis, multifidus, internal and external obliques, rectus abdominis, erector spinae, latissimus dorsi, gluteus maximus and trapezius. Don’t miss this approach to trunk fitness! Participants can expect to engage in supine and standing exercises performed in 45 second cycles, followed by 15-second recovery periods. A mat is suggested. Body + Stability Ball with Shannon: Using a Swiss ball or stability ball, participants will move thru various exercises to strengthen major and minor muscle groups of the body. The use of props like the Swiss ball are designed to challenge improper posture and sense of gravity. This class will surely shake up a mundane fitness regimen! Ball, mat and bodyweight used! The softer the ball the more difficult the workout. Hand Towel Tabata with Charissa: Grab a hand towel and a mat and expect the unexpected during this strength + cardio class! 2021 NIH Combined Federal Campaign
The CFC, led by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) officially, run thru January 15, 2022. This year the CFC celebrates 60 years of giving with a new theme, “You Can Be the Face of Change.” You are invited to join the CFC by supporting your favorite cause. Whether your cause is veterans, helping animals, empowering young students, promoting arts and culture or something else – the CFC gives you a chance to support the causes and organizations you care about. Make a monetary donation or pledge volunteer hours (at participating charities) and impact other’s lives. You can also donate via payroll deduction (federal employees only), onetime or recurring credit/debit or e-check donation. CFC Halloween Charity Fair and Mask Contest
A CFC Halloween Charity Fair and Mask Contest, will be held on October 28th from 11am - 1pm. This event has always been a popular and entertaining NIH tradition. Three charities will have share info about their missions and how your generous donations make a difference. The contest is an opportunity to design an original mask, this year’s theme is “Superheroes.” A superhero can be a nurse, doctor, teacher, mother, father, or fictional character that you admire. Use various types of material to create masks and paint, decorate or draw messages. Designs that include a CFC message will earn an extra point. Family members are encouraged to participate in the virtual fun and use their creativity to dress up in Halloween costumes. Three winners will be selected by a panel of three judges. Due to time limitations, we’re only able to support 15 entries. The prize? Bragging rights and photos in the NIH Record! We look forward to seeing your imaginative and inspiring CFC masks to show how “You Can Be the Face of Change” for the thousands of charities that are part of the 2021 campaign. All entry forms must be completed and submitted to the NIH CFC by Wednesday, October 6th at 4pm. Sign Language Interpreters will be provided. Since our inception in 1983, children have come to Special Love from the Washington metropolitan area and from all across the country thanks to our partnership with the NIH and other area hospitals. Vanpooling Is Economical and Environmentally Friendly
Openings are available in the vanpool from Hagerstown and Frederick to Bethesda. This 10-passenger van is leased thru Enterprise Vanpool. The vanpool leaves Hagerstown Park and Ride at 5:30am for a 7am to 4pm work shift on Bethesda Campus. The van leaves NIH at 4:15pm Monday - Friday. Fulltime NIH Employees who turn in their parking hangers are eligible for the Transhare Program. Contractors are welcome but must make subsidy payments thru the Enterprise portal each month. NIH Philharmonia - “It’s About Time” October 15th & 16th
The NIH Philharmonia, under the direction of Dr. Nancia D'Alimonte, presents “It’s About Time” October 15th and 16th at 7:30pm. The orchestra program includes works by Beethoven, Cage and Haydn. The free concerts will take place at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Rockville, MD. Masks required. Donations accepted. A portion of the proceeds collected from the concert will be donated to the NIH Charities.

R&W Club Frederick is working with Diana’s Destinations to offer 3 bus trips in 2021 to New York City for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.
