“Fitness for You” November 2021 Virtual Fitness Descriptions: All levels are welcome! Gentle Yoga + Foam Roll with Shannon: Matriculate into the week with a calming Yoga practice! Combining Hatha Yoga with self-myofascial release, this class is beneficial in reenergizing the muscles and soothing the spirit. Main focus groups will include the IT band, upper and lower back. A Yoga mat is suggested. Sculpt & Rebound (then Vote) with Charissa: Dust off your trampoline and grab your dumbbells! This class will have your heart pumping and rebounder jumping! In intervals of 2 minutes, participants will engage in cardiovascular rebounding combinations interchanged with strength sets. Recovery will follow every round, with each round being a duration of 8 minutes. Upper Body Circuit with Ashley: In intervals of 45 seconds of work followed by 15-second recovery periods, participants will move through a strength-based circuit using light to heavy weights. The upper body, specifically the trunk, including the muscles of the abdominals, back and arms will be explored. A mat is suggested. Barre Sculpt with Charissa: Barre is a low-impact workout infused with exercises that strengthen and lengthen the body, inspired by ballet and the discipline involved in conditioning and training as a ballet dancer. While ballet may not be your experience or forte, the benefits of Barre are many! Not only is Barre low-impact, helping to preserve the joints, it is also beneficial in maintaining bone and muscle health, while increasing flexibility, mobility and posture awareness. Grab a mat and some light weights for this total body experience! Functionally Fit: Focus| Feet with Shannon: Participants can expect to learn proper positioning of the feet in keeping the body balanced and safe during this mobility-based class. Correct foot alignment in space is important to walking and daily functional activity. Light to heavy weights will be used. Lower Body Circuit with Ashley: Energize your way into the weekend with this strength-based class! Participants will engage in 45-second intervals of work followed by 15-second recovery periods, with exercises designed to strengthen the body from the hips downward. A low-impact mobility workout, participants will move through this all-standing circuit using medium to heavy weights. Strength + Resistance Bands with Shannon: Increase exercise intensity with resistance bands! Resistance bands are a strength training tool. Strength-based training is important to bone and muscle health. By adding resistance bands, participants can shake up mundane fitness routines! Light to strong resistance bands will be utilized. A mat is optional. Boxing w/ Bands with Charissa: Prepare to attack with authentic boxing techniques using loop bands! By integrating loop bands into this workout experience, participants will increase intensity and fat burning! Expect jab, hook, body shot, upper-cut and ducking sequences.
Total Body Tabata with Ashley: A Tabata workout consists of intervals of 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10 second recovery periods. Using medium to heavy weights, participants will explore strength, cardiovascular and abdominal exercises. Test your fitness level with Tabata training! Some fitness experience is suggested. Holiday-Prep HIIT with Shannon: Challenge your physical fitness with this high-intensity interval training class! Participants will focus on strength training for fat burning...before the turkey and dressing! Intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 15-second recovery cycles will be explored. Medium to heavy weights will be utilized. A mat is optional. Abs Only with Ashley: The external obliques, internal obliques, transversus abdominis and rectus abdominis are the muscles that make up the abdominals. In this class, participants can expect to move through 45-second intervals of work followed by 15-second recovery intervals. A mat is suggested. Yoga Strong with Shannon: Who says flexibility and strength can’t coexist? This non-traditional Yoga class fuses basic strength exercises with stretching asanas (Yoga poses). Using light weights, participants will perform various poses designed to strengthen the body and increase breath control and calm. No Yoga experience needed; a Yoga mat is suggested. Hip Flexor Flex, Hip Extensor Intense with Charissa: The hip flexors are a group of muscles that consist of the iliacus, psoas major muscles (also called the iliopsoas), and the rectus femoris, which is a part of your quadriceps. The primary hip extensors include the gluteus maximus, posterior head of the adductor magnus, and the hamstrings. Sitting too long or all day shortens and tightens these muscles. Using light to heavy weights, participants will execute various exercises designed to activate and strengthen the hip flexors and extensors. A mat will also be utilized. Compound Strength with Ashley: Challenge the body by engaging multiple muscle groups at the same time! During this class, attendees can expect 45-second intervals of work followed by 15-second intervals of recovery. Medium to heavy weights and a mat will be utilized. Dance Fitness with Charissa: Let’s dance! A 32-count dance combination will guide this dance experience! Featuring freestyle, jazz, salsa and line dance influences, this class stimulates the brain through memorization of sequences, increase mood and helps decrease stress. No dance experience necessary. Strength & Stability with Shannon: To maintain healthy bones and muscle, strength training at least 3 times a week is recommended. Engaging in this half-hour class involves a small commitment for major benefits! Using light to heavy weights participants will engage in various exercises with a focus on posture and alignment. A mat is optional. Low-Impact Cardio with Ashley: Lunges, squats and stationary sprints are just a few of the exercises abound during this cardiovascular training class! For each exercise, intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 10-second intervals will be explored. A mat is suggested.
HIIT Cornucopia with Shannon: Before you indulge, fight the bulge! Intervals of 30 seconds of hard work followed by 15second recovery cycles will ignite this fat-burning, calorieblasting workout! Using light to heavy weights, participants can expect to activate the major and minor muscle groups before the holiday spread! A mat is optional. Bodyweight Only with Charissa: It’s all about YOU! Every muscle group will be challenged during this strength-based workout using bodyweight. In intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 10-second recovery periods, participants will perform high-intensity interval bouts of the same exercise for 2 half-minute rounds. A mat will be utilized. Thoracic Thanks, Trunk & Planks with Charissa: Thanks to the thoracic spine, mobility is possible, and enables the body to flex, extend and rotate. The thoracic spine is also part of the trunk, which includes the chest, abdomen, and lumbar spine. Participants of this class can expect a core-blasting experience! Planks and other exercises designed to strengthen the center will be executed. A mat and 1 medium to heavy weight will be utilized. Pre- Gobble Glider Challenge with Ashley: Get your gliders and go! This circuit workout can be done at home or on travel using paper plates or fitness gliders! In intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 10-second recovery cycles, participants will perform various cardiovascular exercises involving bodyweight. A mat is suggested.
Yoga for Athletes with Shannon: This practice involves executing poses that are designed to stretch the hamstrings, hip flexors, low back & quads, with the athlete in mind! Light to heavy weights and a mat will be used during this Yogic experience! Post-Turkey Tabata with Ashley: Don’t let it stick! Get rid of it during this high-intensity interval experience! 20-second bouts of hard work followed by 10-second recovery cycles will be explored during this total body cardiovascular workout. A mat will be utilized. Cyber Monday Strength with Shannon: With the holiday season in full-swing, tap into one of the best ways of keeping pounds at bay! Strength training elicits fat burning at rest! So step away from the screen and join this strength routine this Cyber Monday! Participants will need light to heavy weights in preparation for major muscle group activation during this class! A mat is optional. Oblique Obliteration! with Charissa: Using 1 heavy dumbbell and a mat, the focus of this core experience will be the obliques! The obliques, which run along the outer abdominals, are important for rotational movements, bending from side to side, and protecting the spine. 60-seconds bouts will be executed.

Whether your cause is veterans, helping animals, empowering young students, promoting arts and culture or something else – the CFC gives you a chance to support the causes and organizations you care about. Make a monetary donation or pledge volunteer hours (at participating charities) and impact other’s lives. You can also donate via payroll deduction (federal employees only), onetime or recurring credit/debit or e-check donation. Please make your pledge by visiting the NIH CFC website and clicking the “DONATE” button before January 15th.
NIH is one of the leading CFC contributors in the area, but we still need your help. We can’t meet our goal without you! Any amount you can give helps those in need! Federal employees are encouraged to designate their contributions to as many as five charitable CFC organizations. Support the NIH Charities!
Thank you for being the face of change! For more info, contact the CFC team.
Combined Federal Campaign – Giving Tuesday, November 30th Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving is a single day for all of us to demonstrate our appreciation for what we have by giving back to our communities. Historically, federal employees have turned this day into the biggest giving day of the annual campaign. We hope to keep up with this wonderful tradition and do the same this year! The CFC has thousands of charities that work tirelessly to fulfill important missions and make our world a better place. This Giving Tuesday help those in need and change a life by giving to a cause important to you. In this season of thankfulness, please consider becoming a changemaker by donating to your favorite cause or pledging volunteer hours with participating charities. To donate, please visit cfc.nih.gov and make your pledge today! Together, “We Can Be the Face of Change” for charities who need our support! If you have any questions about this year’s campaign, please contact Debra Gale, NIH CFC Program Manager, at 301-4962370 or NIHCFC2021@mail.nih.gov.
Special Love/Camp Fantastic #49642 Special Love provides a strong, nurturing environment for children with cancer and their families through its free camps and getaway weekends, emergency financial assistance, and educational scholarships for young adults who have beaten cancer and now want to move on with their lives. Camp Fantastic, our cornerstone program for 7-17 year-old cancer patients, is considered a protocol within the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and has made Special Love a recognized National Institutes of Health (NIH) charity. Since our inception in 1983, children have come to Special Love from the Washington metropolitan area and from all across the country thanks to our partnership with the NIH and other area hospitals. Each year, Special Love serves hundreds of children, teens, and young adults ages birth to 30 years old and their families. The Children’s Inn #10324 The Children’s Inn’s mission is to provide a free place like home to children and young adult NIH patients from across the United States and the world while they participate in lifechanging clinical research studies at the National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Center. Everything we do strives to reduce the burden of illness on families, make childhood possible and help advance NIH clinical research. Contact The Inn if you would like someone to speak to your employees. Friends of Patients at the NIH #85994 The Friends at NIH touch patients’ and their families’ lives in three ways: Shelter near the NIH during treatment and help keeping up with housing costs at home; Support systems including family and caregiver travel costs back and forth to the NIH; Quality of life to take some of the stresses off, like a meal when they arrive on Sunday to start a week of difficult treatments; We are champions of NIH patients, helping to cover their essential needs so they can focus on recovery, healing and their unique role in health discoveries. These breakthroughs provide Hope for you and your family–and all future generations. The Foundation for the NIH #29165 Donors of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) help advance breakthrough biomedical discoveries and improve the quality of people’s lives in support of NIH’s mission. As a 501(c)(3) charity chartered by Congress, the FNIH convenes scientific leaders, individuals, not-for-profits and corporations around biomedical research goals—all in an effort to respond to the most urgent priorities in human health, domestically and globally. By leveraging the vast resources of NIH with research expertise, equipment, infrastructure and funding from the private sector, the FNIH builds and manages public-private partnerships across the biological spectrum of diseases and disorders. The FNIH also supports the next generation of scientists by funding educational and training programs at NIH and raises funds for the Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge, which provides free lodging to patients and their families. The FNIH has demonstrated strong financial health and a commitment to accountability and transparency, earning Charity Navigator’s “Exceeds or Meets Industry Standards” rating for 17 years.
