2018 Mobile Mammography Screening The George Washington Breast Cancer Center will make four visits to NIH for our 2018 Mammography Screening. All NIH employees, their families, contractors, visiting scientists and others associated with NIH are eligible to participate. The screening dates are as follows: Wednesday, May 30th – Building 45 Wednesday, July 18th – Building 45
Thursday, August 9th – Building 10, Lot H Thursday, November 8th – Building 10, Lot H The van will be on-site from 9:30am - 3:30pm taking prescheduled appointments. Reservations can be made no more than 1 month prior of screening date. There is a minimum requirement of 15 participants for the screenings to take place and a maximum of 25 per date. Each screening is conducted by a female technologist, and a board certified radiologist specializing in mammography will interpret the images. Appointments should take approximately 20 minutes. Most insurance companies will cover the cost (approx. $350) of the screening. To see if your insurance is accepted or to make an appointment, call 202-741-3252. If there is no answer, please leave a message with your name and phone number. The GW Mammovan staff will call you back and schedule your appointment. Please have your insurance card and doctor’s information available when calling to make an appointment. Who is Eligible? Any woman IS eligible if she meets the following:
• She is age 40 or older • She is not pregnant or breast-feeding • She does not have breast implants • She does not have any prior history of breast problems (patients who need a 6 months follow up must get a Diagnostic mammogram not Screening) • She is not having symptoms such as a lump in either breast or unusual breast pain • She has a referring physician or doctor of record (Ex. Medical Doctor, OBGYN doctor) • She has not had a mammogram within the last 12 months Individuals with disabilities who need Sign Language Interpreters and/or reasonable accommodation to participate in this screening should contact the R&W at 301-496-8746 and/or the Federal Relay 1-800-877-8339 or email browned2@mail.nih.gov. Requests should be made at least 10 days in advance of the appointment. Join the NIH Bicycle Commuter Club (NIHBCC) in celebrating National Bike Month and Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 18th, at NIH-Bldg. 1 from 7am - 9:30am, Rock Springs Business Park (Marriott HQ) from 6:30am – 8:30am and Rockville-Fallsgrove (pit stop close to the NCI Shady Grove building) from 6:30am – 9am. These buildings will be featured among many local pit stops supported by the Washington Area Bicyclists Association in a salute to bicycle commuting. NIH often wins the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's (COG) award for being the area's biggest employer of Bike to Work Day participants. The NIH Police will host their 26th Annual NIH Police Awareness Day on Wednesday, May 16th from 10am - 2pm in front of Bldg. 1. Many local, state and federal law enforcement agencies will be attending. The day will include K-9 demonstrations, various other activities and demonstrations, and a cookout with a menu that will consist of a combination of: hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled chicken breasts, Italian sausages with onions & green peppers, baked beans, potato chips, soda or water. This event is a great opportunity to showcase the many fine organizations to whom we owe a debt of thanks for our safety. In the event of rain, the location will be moved to the Bldg. 31A Patio. Camp Fantastic – Special Love, Inc. Children with cancer have to grow up much too fast. They feel different from other children and many miss out on activities that healthy children experience daily. This was the reason Special Love was created. Special Love programs, including Camp Fantastic, offer children with cancer the chance to jump, play, explore, laugh, swim and make friends through a community of support, made up of patients, family, and staff who know and understand the trials and triumphs of battling childhood cancer. Al-Anon Provides Help for Those Involved with Substance Abuse - Al-Anon, an organization for family members of people with alcohol abuse, now welcomes family members of individuals with narcotic abuse problems to attend weekly group meetings. Spring 2018 NIH Research and Taste of Festival – May 23rd & 24th The annual Spring NIH Research Festival will take place on the South side of Bldg. 10 in Lot 10H on Wednesday, May 23rd from 10am – 3pm and Thursday, May 24th from 10am – 2:30pm. A variety of vendors will be on hand to inform the NIH Community of equipment, supplies and services related to biomedical research. While there on Wednesday, stop by the “Taste of” event featuring a variety of local restaurants who will be offering a sampling from their menu. Lunch will be sold from 11:30am - 1:30pm for $10 and will include 2 meal options, one dessert and one drink. Two food trucks will be onsite 11am – 2pm on Thursday, May 24th.

11th Annual NIH Take a Hike Day Registration Starts May 10th
The Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC) NIH Chapter invites NIHers to join the 2018 HHS Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Observance that will be celebrated on May 9th at Bldg. 1, Wilson Hall from 9am -1pm. This year’s event is co-sponsored by the NIH Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, FAPAC HHS Parklawn Chapter (representing IHS, AHRQ, SAMHSA, and HRSA), USPHS Asian Pacific American Officer Committee, Association of Asian Pacific Islander Employees of CDC and ATSDR, and FDA colleagues. Featured speakers include Ms. Holly Ham, Executive Director, White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and Dr. Matthew Y.C. Lin, MD, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. There will be a networking session from 12pm - 1pm. Founded in 1985, FAPAC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization representing the civilian and military Asian Pacific American (APA) employees in the Federal and District of Columbia governments. FAPAC is the oldest and largest AAPI affinity group for federally employed Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
The 11th Annual NIH Take a Hike Day will be held Thursday, June 7th, from 11:30am – 1:30pm in front of Bldg. 1. All NIH staff are invited to walk or run around the perimeter of the NIH campus (approx. 3.25 miles) rain or shine. In addition to the main campus, there will also be Take a Hike Day activities at various off campus locations. In its 11th year, Take a Hike Day is the NIH’s largest fitness and wellness event with over 10,000 individuals participating in its 11 year history. This event is part of the “Spring into Wellness” campaign to support your physical wellbeing. It also supports White House initiatives promoting a healthier Federal workforce and the U.S. Surgeon General’s call to action in support of walking and walkable communities. This year’s Asian Heritage Celebration at the NIH will feature a “Fashion Show.” The NIH community will have an opportunity to see colorful clothing and costumes from several traditions, including Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino and Indian – as modeled by volunteer NIH staff. This event will take place on Wednesday, May 23rd from 11:30am - 1:30pm on the Bldg. 31A Patio. The NIH Asian and Pacific Islander American Organization (APAO) has sponsored annual observances of Asian American history and heritage at NIH for many years. Enjoy traditional Indian dance and a Chinese music ensemble. You can learn about Chinese calligraphy and Japanese origami, and participate in a Tai Chi group exercise. Asian foods, as well as jewelry and accessories, will be available for sale. Members of NIH organizations, institutes and centers will also have information tables.
A-RTS at Rockville Town Square Fine Art Festival, May 5th - 6th The A-RTS at Rockville Town Square Arts Festival hosts more than 160 artists showcasing original art, from media to wearable arts, which fit every price point and make the perfect gift for Mother’s day or graduation.
