Eurest Corner This Month’s Superfood Is… This month’s superfood is FISH! Fish offers a lean protein source that also contains health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids which are known for being good for our hearts and may also boost our moods.

Highlighted Recipes: Lemon Caper Mayo Grilled Salmon Sandwich Ingredients: • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice • 4 tsp capers, drained • ¼ cup light Just Mayo • 4 each, 4 oz salmon filets • 4 tsp ground pepper • 4 each, Sandwich Thins, 100% whole wheat • 2 cups arugula lettuce leaf Combine mayonnaise, capers and lemon juice in a small bowl. Preheat grill to medium heat. Season salmon with pepper. Grill salmon until internal temperature reaches 145F. Spread caper mayonnaise on both sides of the wheat thin. Add the salmon and arugula to the sandwich.

Arctic Char with Kale and Walnut Pesto • • • • • • • • • •

6 oz Italian Parsley, Chopped 1 ½ ea Garlic Cloves, Crushed 1 Tbsp Walnut Halves & Pieces, Chopped 1/4 cup Almonds, Sliced 2 oz Parmesan Cheese, Grated 1/2 ea Fresh Lemon 1/8 tsp Salt 1/8 tsp Ground Black Pepper 2 Tbsp, 1/4 tsp Canola Oil 4 ea 4 oz. Arctic Char Filets

Pre-heat grill. Meanwhile, in a food processor combine the parsley, parmesan, salt, pepper, oil, lemon juice, almonds and walnuts until it forms the consistency of a thick sauce. Keep any leftover pesto in the fridge. Make sure the fish has no bones and is clean. Brush with oil and car efully place it on the grill skin side down. You should be able to cook it all the way with skin side down until an internal temperature of 145F is reached and the skin gets crisp. Remove from grill and serve with the pesto.

NIH Blood Bank Give Red, Save Green The NIH Blood Bank and the NIH/NOAA R&W have joined together to raise awareness for the importance of blood and platelet donations. As an added incentive, those who donate will receive a coupon from the NIH Blood Bank for $2 off an R&W membership. The NIH Blood Bank, an integral part of Bethesda’s health care community, provides a lifesaving service that benefits our citizen’s every day. The NIH Blood Bank collects blood and blood products, which help take care of and save the lives of patients in our community. NIH License Plates Are you proud to work here at the National Institutes of Health? If so, then show it with personalized license plates. The R&W has NIH organizational license plates for Maryland residents. Plates are $15 and are MVA Non-logo NIH plates. There is an additional $5 service fee payable to the R&W. It’s easy to order, just fill out an application at the R&W Activities Desk in Bldg. 31, show your NIH ID and R&W membership, and drop off two checks (one payable to the MVA for $15 and another payable to the R&W for $5). Plates take 2-8 weeks to receive. The MVA will send them directly to you. For more info about this program email browned2@mail.nih.gov. We will interoffice mail you the application.

Currently scheduled to appear are Lazaro Jewelers, Pat’s Exclusive Gifts, Bracelet for Cancer, Wonderland Knits, LuLaRoe, Tibet Sky Emporium, Cupcakes Lounge, RareGlo Organic Shea Products and R&W will be selling NIH branded merchandise. This will be a great opportunity to shop for a loved one just before Valentine’s Day, or just because, or to pick up something nice for yourself. MD: NOAA Open House – February 10th - On Saturday, February 10th, from 9am – 4pm, explore your world and learn how NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, takes the pulse of the planet every day and protects and manages ocean and coastal resources. Come to NOAA’s Silver Spring campus (1315 East-West Highway) for a series of free activities, including engaging talks by NOAA experts, interactive exhibits, special tours, and hands-on activities for ages 5 and up. Meet and talk with scientists, weather forecasters, hurricane hunters, and others who work to understand our environment, protect life and property, and conserve and protect natural resources. The R&W offers dry cleaning services through Tom’s Dry Cleaning at the convenience of your workplace. Save money and time out of your busy schedule by using the service provided at the Rockledge store and Bldg. 31 on the 1st floor. Laundry service is $2.20 and dry cleaning is $6.75 and up. Your morning routine will take a little longer because you’ll need to get the frost, ice and snow, off of your car windows. Rather than allowing carbon monoxide to build up as you wait for the windows defrost, scrape and brush those windows clean with an NIH ice scraper, $3 at the R&W gift shops.

R&W Tax Preparation Service It’s that time of year again but don’t fret, we can help! The R&W is sponsoring our annual Income Tax Preparation Service through an independent accounting firm, Teti and Carswell. With over 30 years of experience, they can provide assistance in all areas of taxation. Tax preparation for foreign nationals is also available. Half-hour consultations will be held on campus, in Bldg. 31 Rm. 2 (just past the A-wing elevator), on Thursdays, February 1st thru March 29th between 3pm - 5pm. NIH R&W Montgomery Aquatic Center (MAC) Corporate Membership Eligibility for MAC Corporate Memberships apply to any NIH staff member who has both a valid NIH ID badge, current NIH email address, and a current R&W membership. R&W Club Frederick Bus Trip to Longwood Gardens Join R&W Club Frederick on their trip to Longwood Gardens, an American botanical garden consisting of over 1,077 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows in the Brandywine Creek Valley of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
