2018 Mobile Mammography Screening The George Washington Breast Cancer Center will make four visits to NIH for our 2018 Mammography Screening. All NIH employees, their families, contractors, visiting scientists and others associated with NIH are eligible to participate. The screening dates are as follows: Wednesday, May 30th – Building 45 Wednesday, July 18th – Building 45
Thursday, August 9th – Building 10, Lot H Thursday, November 8th – Building 10, Lot H The van will be on-site from 9:30am - 3:30pm taking prescheduled appointments. Reservations can be made no more than 1 month prior of screening date. Reservations for the May screening can be made beginning April 30h. There is a minimum requirement of 15 participants for the screenings to take place and a maximum of 25 per date. Each screening is conducted by a female technologist, and a board certified radiologist specializing in mammography will interpret the images. Appointments should take approximately 20 minutes. Most insurance companies will cover the cost (approx. $350) of the screening. To see if your insurance is accepted or to make an appointment, call 202-741-3252. If there is no answer, please leave a message with your name and phone number. The GW Mammovan staff will call you back and schedule your appointment. Please have your insurance card and doctor’s information available when calling to make an appointment.

Any woman IS eligible if she meets the following: • She is age 40 or older • She is not pregnant or breast-feeding • She does not have breast implants • She does not have any prior history of breast problems (patients who need a 6 months follow up must get a Diagnostic mammogram not Screening) • She is not having symptoms such as a lump in either breast or unusual breast pain • She has a referring physician or doctor of record (Ex. Join us on Thursday, April 26 from 10am – 2pm for the 2018 NIH Earth Day Celebration at Bethesda, Maryland. This year’s Earth Day theme is “End Plastic Pollution.” The event will take place at the Natcher Conference Center (Building 45), both inside and on the lawn. Embrace your passion for nature by celebrating Earth Day with a variety of child-friendly activities, games, giveaways, live animals and Farmer’s Market vendors. Some of this year’s Earth Day festivities are specifically tailored towards the “End Plastic Pollution” theme and will provide visitors with suggestions for reducing plastic waste. Learn about sustainable foods and produce. View a display of electric and hybrid vehicles from the NIH Fleet and the NIH Electric Vehicle Users, including test rides. 24th Annual Take Your Child to Work Day NIH will host the 24th Annual Take Your Child to Work Day (TYCTWD) Thursday, April 26th from 9am – 4pm. Bring your school-age child (grades 1 – 12) to NIH for a day of discovery and exploration at the nation’s medical research agency! NIH Kenjutsu Club at the Cherry Blossom Festival The NIH Kenjutsu Club is performing at Sakura Matsuri Japanese street festival on Saturday, April 14th, on Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington DC. The club, now in its 20th year, is accepting new members from beginners with no experience to advanced practitioners of other martial arts. Training in sword and short staff includes three of the classical Japanese weapon arts. Emphasis is on individual development and partner work using wood or bamboo practice equipment. The club meets in the Porter Center (Bldg. 35, Atrium) on Saturday for sword arts from 9am – 11:15am (yagyu shrinkage ryu) and from 11am – 1pm (jiki shrinkage ryu), and on Sunday for short staff from 9am – 11:15am (shindo muso ryu). Join the NIH Bicycle Commuter Club (NIHBCC) in celebrating National Bike Month and Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 18th, at NIH-Bldg. 1 from 7am - 9:30am, Rock Springs Business Park (Marriott HQ) from 6:30am – 8:30am and Rockville-Fallsgrove (pit stop close to the NCI Shady Grove building) from 6:30am – 9am. These buildings will be featured among many local pit stops supported by the Washington Area Bicyclists Association in a salute to bicycle commuting. NIH often wins the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's (COG) award for being the area's biggest employer of Bike to Work Day participants. Buzzing For Change Students from George Washington University will host their tenth annual head-shaving marathon to benefit Special Love, an NIH related charity for children with cancer. Buzzing for Change at GWU will include awesome music, free pizza and lots of people getting their haircuts! This year, there will be a minimum donation of about $9.99 for a haircut. Participants shave their heads for money (pledges you collect) or just cut off enough (8” or more) to donate to Locks of Love. Not sure about buzzing? You can always volunteer! NIH Tae Kwon Do Class The NIH Tae Kwon Do (TKD) School is offering regular and beginner’s classes for adults and mature teens, no previous martial arts experience is necessary. Current TKD practitioners of any rank or any other arts are welcome. The curriculum combines traditional striking, kicking, forms, sparring, and other basic martial arts techniques with particular emphasis on self-defense. The club meets in the Thomas Malone Judo and Tae Kwon Do Center (Bldg. 31, Rm. B4C18 on Mondays from 6pm – 8pm, Wednesdays from 6pm – 7pm and Fridays from 6pm – 8pm (sparring and self-defense). Registration is $50 per quarter or $150 for the year. The club is also recruiting black belts in Tae Kwon Do to help as instructors. This offer doesn’t extend to family members. MAC memberships under this promotion are $150 (savings of over $200), paid by check or cashier’s check. Sailing Basic Training course: The NIH Sailing Association (NIHSA), an R&W supported club, offers a Sailing Basic Training course for NIH adult employees, contractors, fellows, and patients, and NOAA employees. Plates are $15 and are MVA Non-logo NIH plates. There is an additional $5 service fee payable to the R&W. It’s easy to order, just fill out an application at the R&W Activities Desk in Bldg. 31, show your NIH ID and R&W membership, and drop off two checks (one payable to the MVA for $15 and another payable to the R&W for $5).
