The Lower Austria railways (Waldviertelbahn, Wachau-Bahn, Reblaus-Express) are particularly bike-friendly, as bikes travel free of charge. On the Mariazellerbahn, bicycles can be taken along for a fee. ÖBB bike transport: On local trains marked with a bicycle symbol, bikes can be taken along without reservation, provided that spaces are available. Ybbstal cycle route Off to new shores, on to river cycling on the Ybbs in the Mostviertel. Because hardly anything promises more relaxation than following the sound of the river along the Ybbstal cycling trail. Cycling enthusiasts experience the water and nature on a route of 107 kilometres. The core section is between Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See. The route here follows the railway line of the former Ybbstal train – it is completely level, away from road traffic and particularly suitable for families and groups. In addition to tempting bathing opportunities and wildly romantic gorges,

there are many places to stop for refreshments. Leading establishments of Lower Austria’s inn culture provide the necessary endurance. “You snooze, you lose” is out of place here. “Good things take time” is much more appropriate. Fortified with regional and seasonal Mostviertel delicacies, you can relax and cycle towards your destination: the picturesque lake Lunzer See.

The EuroVelo 9 connects the Baltic Sea with the Adriatic Sea. First, the good news: A section of 212 kilometres traverses Lower Austria. It displays the country’s diversity. From Reintal to Mönichkirchen – starting in the Weinviertel and moving on to the thermal region of the Vienna Woods, to finally convert pleasure cyclists into summit climbers in the Vienna Alps at the Wechsel. Past the cultural metropolis of Mistelbach, through the romantic Kreuttal

valley to Wolkersdorf, Bisamberg and ultimately to Vienna. In the Vienna Woods, you cycle on the Thermen cycling trail along a chain of hills. For cyclists with an appetite, the Heurigen specialities and excellent wines are to be recommended. Sated, the journey then continues in the Viennese Alps. The paradise of views in the alpine south of Lower Austria reveals river valleys, wide plains and high mountains. On a flat stretch on the eastern edge of the Alps,

Cycling along the Piestingtal cycle path is many things, but never monotonous. Right on the edge of the Vienna Alps in Lower Austria, cyclists follow in the footsteps of Ferdinand Raimund. Blooming gardens and architecture worth seeing inspired the 19th century playwright to spend his summer holidays here. You will also pass the Raimund Villa in Pernitz. This is one reason why the narrow river valley has been given the romantic name “Biedermeier Valley”. Conclusion: The 38-kilometre bike tour along the babbling Piesting offers unforgettable moments of nature. The final stage leads to Gutenstein.

The Triesting-Gölsental cycling trail benefits from the increasing desire for recreational cycling in the country. From a small insider tip, the 62-kilometre route in the Vienna Woods has developed into a top cycling route. Along the Triesting and Gölsen rivers, time seems to stand still. You pedal in harmony with the sound of the babbling brook. Idyllic spots on the banks invite you to a picnic. The tour leads from Schönau to Traisen and connects the Thermen cycling trail and the Traisental cycling trail.

The Traisental cycle route is directly connected to the Danube cycle path. The 111-kilometre family and pilgrimage cycling trail leads from Traismauer through the Traisental-Danube region via St. Pölten, Lilienfeld and St. Aegyd am Neuwalde to Mariazell. A good reason for a break waits around every bend. “Enjoyment in the best location” is the motto of the wine taverns in the Traisen Valley. Tip: Be sure to stop at Herzogenburg Abbey or the Museum of Lower Austria. You’ve probably noticed: the top cycling route in the Mostviertel is varied – and, with a few exceptions, it’s constantly downhill.

Full steam ahead or rather down a gear? Both are possible on the 98-kilometre-long Thaya circuit in the Waldviertel. Nowadays, cyclists can be found on the former railway lines WaidhofenSlavonice and Göpfritz-Raabs where steam locomotives used to cross the landscape. The trail leads along the Thaya. Not surprisingly, there are idyllic river bathing places for the whole family and groups along the route, as well as captivating sights, including the mighty Raabs Castle or relics of the former railway line.
