SHORT STORIES

When Santa Claus Broke my Ribs

Have you ever felt like your ribs jumped out your chest? Well, I have. One day it was a hot summer morning in Riverside, California. This happened in 2021. I was there for my soccer championship with my team called the bulldogs. The energy inside my veins was making me bounce off the walls. My team had never lost a single match in the entire season. I was a defender. Every time we would score a goal in the match the coach would play the song “who let the dogs out” because of the name of our team. My coach didn’t really teach us but he was nice. He didn’t know much about soccer, my father noticed that. My dad started joining in the matches and actually teaching us about soccer. Now both of them were preparing us for the championship. The coach with a nice energy, always ready to play the song when we were winning, and my dad teaching us all about technique. When my dad was preparing us for the big match, the referee came. He looked exactly like Santa Claus. He had a white beard, white hair, red shirt and weighed about 300 pounds. He told us we were going to play off-sides. My team did not even understand what that was so we were not prepared. Our eyebrows raised and we were looking at each other simultaneously having no idea what the referee was saying. He could even have been speaking in a different language for all that it mattered to us. We were definitely confused but we got over it and learned. We were playing against the tigers. I don’t know how they got to the championship. We beat them 11-0 the last time we played them. So basically we were thinking we were going to destroy them. I was feeling really confident. We kept training and then we heard “FIU FIU” the whistle sounded. That meant we were starting the match.

Another World

Once upon a time, there were two brothers named George and Michael. Michael was fearless, while George was a quiet and shy person, yet very intelligent they were the most curious brothers in town. One day, they were mining and found many pieces of a black stone with numerous hieroglyphics from an ancient generation that was unknown to them. They began combining the fragments of rock, and when they finished, something strange emerged and started swallowing everything. George and Michael resisted until George couldn´t anymore, and he got swallowed by the strange portal. Michael was safe, but he couldn´t even think about what his brother would do alone. The brothers were separated. Michael was apprehensive about his brother, and he wanted to go and rescue him, but it would take him a long time to repair the black stone that was completely broken up into microscopic pieces. While in the other dimension, George had just woken up and started looking for his brother, screaming, “Michael! Michael!” He looked at all the places, and he couldn´t find his brother. He was very concerned. He was alone in a place he didn´t even know. It was all very strange. The trees had a strange look, and they were terrified. It was all dark, and he couldn´t see more of the fear. But he was intelligent, and he thought of a device he could make to travel, a type of Airplane to travel and find the other black stone that was hidden in one place to escape from this terrible world. While Michael was already finished with the black stone, he attached every little piece. When he connected all the pieces, a portal opened, and Michael let go and jumped into the portal, but this dimension was different; it was all about Math and Science, and Michael was confused, but he remembered what his brother said to him that intelligence is not something you are born with, you have to learned it. George was also remembering what his brother taught him, which was to take risks and to be brave, so George got over his fear and looked at the scary tree with bravery and grabbed an axe and started to break the tree with all his soul, and with the tree, he used it to begin to make his airplane. Michael was doing the math problems with all his brain and trying his best to solve them. As George finished building his airplane, he soared toward the towering mountains where the black shiny stone was located. He dug deep within himself, overcoming his fears to find his way home. In the math and science dimension, Michael was almost done with his calculations, but he struggled with the last problem. Just then, George arrived to help his brother with the final challenge, combining their strengths and wits. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they completed their tasks and returned home together. Embracing tightly, they celebrated their reunion and realized that anyone can conquer their fears if they work together.

called anxiety. It was saying if you don t win this you re a failure or you be an undefeated team, if you lose you’ll screw your chance up”. I was fee really down and discouraged which made it hard for me to play well. My t scored a goal but this time we couldn’t even play the song because of so reasons. I was already feeling down and now we couldn’t even play the son that just made me feel even worse. The goal brought my hopes up a little bi I started to play better. But at the end of the first quarter of the match I st running forward to try and get the ball but I was only looking at the ball n front. Simultaneously the 300 pound referee was walking backwards. And

“KATHWAM”

The referee had fallen on me. It was one of those times where it hurt so bad you weren’t even able to cry. The worst part was that he couldn’t even get because he was super old and had trouble getting up. I felt like a building fallen on top of me. It was just this 70-year-old 300-pound man on top of tiny body. It feels absolutely horrible. It makes you feel like you don't even to live anymore. Basically, inexplicably horrible. Maybe that was because literally broke my ribs. My dad ran over and asked me where it hurt. I was able to answer him because I was in too much pain. The referee felt really and kept apologizing throughout the whole match. He was really nice. I ha go to the sidelines with Benjamin (the coach’s son). He was really nice, alth he didn’t play much. I was sitting there trying to walk, and I managed to w halftime. My team kept working hard and destroying the tigers. They we determined to win for me. In the end, it all paid off because my team won championship for me. When the final whistle blew and my team had won eyes lit up. I couldn't help but smile and celebrate. I wanted to run, but in condition, it was not as easy as it normally is. We all got trophies and donu even got the trophy for perfect attendance. On my drive to the E.R., I cou help but think about how important my teammates were. Even though I hurt, I was able to trust others

The prologue

Hidden in the shadows, a group of four stray cats, each with unusual colors, red, blue, green, and violet. The origin of their colour was uncertain … Maybe a mutation, or just a simple experiment. It was a Sunday morning, with a radiant, hot sun, just like the day's name says. Many people were sweating in their lightest shorts, cursing the sudden heat wave. The morning was so hot, it made it into the local news. The group of stray cats was scorching hot, desperate for a refreshing liquid source. They had only one home for the four of them, a box full of tiny white Styrofoam balls. The cats had been together since they were born; they had to survive in the streets, all alone by themselves. When they were 2 months old, Red took over as a group leader. The day-to-day survival was rough, but usually they went to a certain place: Tha Flyin’ Fish market. The store owner always lets the cats have some leftover fish. But they did not know that everything in their lives would change forever

Chapter 1: Rising

“Good Moooorning!!”

“Shut up, Blue.”

“Is it already morning?”

“Open the box!”

“I'm still sleeping ”

Red tilted with his paw for the box’s opening lid. He found it difficult, tripping on styrofoam beads and… Green

“Hey!” Yelled Green, “Be careful!”

Light poured in, providing a warm trickle of illumination to their cold, miserable bodies The morning sky was clear and cloudless, resembling an endless, enigmatic ocean. They lived on a sidewalk flanked by two grey walls, like mice in a deep, steep, sleep One wall was crumbled, leaving tiny bits of rock scattered about. Their sidewalk was a dead end, hidden from human sight, appearing abandoned and filled with despair Yet, they continued to reside there, with no other place to go It was both an advantage and a disadvantage to live there... Look at it this way: they were alone, yet free from others' intruding and disrupting the sacred atmosphere But it had a price, too Sometimes rats wanted to take over the place, forcing the cats to battle with hordes of them at least once a month. Red gazed at the sky. It was sunny, with no clouds threatening to obscure the beautiful sun Violet emerged from the box, contemplating the horizon, followed by Green and Blue.

Violet said, “Finally, light!”

“Yeah, violin!!” Teased Blue.

“Hey,” Violet hissed, “you tiny piece of mice!”

“Let's get to Tha Flyin’ Fish,” Blue yodeled, “I am very hungry!”

“Ok, let’s go…” Red sighted.

“Hey,” Red called, “ no fighting during the food walk.”

The cats had named everything they said, Violet remembered everything, like a cat GPS They call walk to get their food, “Food Walk” They said no fighting because in the morning, those 4 cats w bit off in the early morning, like an adult without his/her coffee The Flying Fish was their main source, the fish shop owned by a fat, short chef The chef thought the cats were adorable, plus he more profit from them as the bystanders would pass by the market because of the cats, so he fed t little bit of fresh fish

“ Hey, Violet!” Blue called, “Do you remember the way?”

“I can perfectly remember,” Violet started, “I don’t ever…”

“So, which was the way?” Blue interrupted.

“Chill, walk until the Sordol Suculentas sign and turn right.” Violet, annoyed at the sudden interru

The four cats were walking on the sidewalk. The road was empty, sleeping until some car rumbled nowhere, waking it up, making it irritated. The closed shops stared at the four cats, as there was no else moving in the town.

“Hey,” Red called, “ wasn’t this the place where the food was?”

Violet looked all over the place… There was an empty spot in the middle of 2 other buildings. It patch of bare dirt, devoid of grass. It was a hole in the ground, with the perfect shape of the base o Flyin’ Fish It was 10 cm deep, but it was unusually dark for being that shallow The darkness was lurking monster, watching the cats, hoping that they would step on it

“Ummm What happened ” Green whispered, full of fear, scared of the oddity of the even

YOU KNOW HE IS OUR BROTHER! HOW-

“GUY-!!!” Red screamed

“What?” Violet and Green said in unison.

Red now suffered the same fate as Blue. The three cats now two were starting to panic, as th had never experienced anything like that before “REEED!!!” Violet screamed.

“THIS IS YOUR FAULT! IF YOU DID NOT INSIST ON EXPLO-!” lamented Green. “Sorry,” Violet whined.

Green was shocked once again Some tears were appearing from the eyes of her sister First, just a little drops, then a huge rain. He had never seen her sister, the one who was always organized and control of her emotions, cry. He realized they had been together: Red, the leader, Blue, the joker the family, and Violet, the one who kept control of the family. For the group's wellness, she had sacrificed her ability to expose hard, intense emotions. He had never thought they would be separated, nor that the world could be so cruel Violet was crying intensely, she was crying a river emotions that were kept in her. She never had such a hardship, not even the whole week without f

“Let’s try to find Red and Blue.” Green appeasingly said.

“But what if we don't find them? What if they are dead? What if we will never again meet togeth What if-” Violet whined.

“It will be ok.” Green.

“Where do we start? I’m going to make whoever is responsible for this wish he was never born, n did he exist in the first place!” Violet said, determined to find Red and Blue, whatever it would tak

But they were still young, though They did not understand how cruel and cold the world can be And that includes them separating themselves into 2 groups of 2… Will they suffer the same fate Blue and Red?... Or will they succeed in their search?...

The Jello

We never could have prepared for the jello, the jello that changed our lives, the jello that almost ended the world. It started with two engineers showing of their latest inventions in a military compound, (they used the cafetria because they had no other free space), and with a slip, a trigger pull and a innocent plate of jello being hit with a growth/shrink ray, a disaster was born, the jello grew slowly at first, then faster and faster untill Boston was submerged under the surprisingly tasty grape jello In a few hours, New York had gone under. The world panicked as the mass of purple grew higher and higher on the horizon.

Humankind desperately called for a hero to venture into the mass of jello to stop it from spreading around the world and consuming our planet.

In times of need, Gianluca stepped up. He was 7 feet tall and had muscles like a bull; no one challenged his honour because his heart was pure. He planned to set off with his trusty companion Benji to find a way to stop the Jell-O and save the world. Gonny (as was his nickname) set out in the early hours of the morning towards the rapidly rising pile of jello, with a slight problem. How would he breathe in Jell-O? The answer came to him almost instantly; all he needed was a powerful vacuum to make a path through the jello, and he would be fine! So, a hop, skip, and a favor called in; he now had his weapon a vacuum. As he went up to the mountain of jello, he turned on his super weapon, the vacuum worked perfectly, it swallowed the jello like it was air. Now and then, he had to empty the vacuum, but it was like a dream. After many long days of vacuuming, he discovered the source of the Jell-O expansion. He was pushed back by the rapidly expanding jello, and after many long minutes, he could almost touch the growth/shrink ray. He struggled and gasped, he reached for it, and he grabbed hold, he pulled it up and switched it to shrink mode, but his trials were not done yet, as the growth ray pushed him out, the shrink ray pulled him in! Gonny fought valiantly, but the ray was too strong; he was sucked in and shrunk., The ray shrank the jelly and Gonny until it was microscopic. Then weakened from all the shrinking and growing, it pulled itself apart. In the end, the Jell-O was shrunk, and the ray destroyed, but the world knew it had the greatest hero.

To this day, some say that Gianluca floats around, smaller than an atom, but there all the same, a testimony of bravery and selflessness, known and immortalised as the man who shrank the Jell-O. How would he breathe in Jell-O? The answer came to him almost instantly; all he needed was a powerful vacuum to make a path through the jello, and he would be fine! So, a hop, skip, and a jump called in; he now had his weapon a vacuum.

As he went up to the mountain of Jell-O, he turned on his super weapon, the vacuum worked perfectly; it swallowed the Jell-O like it was air. Now and then, he had to empty the vacuum, but it was like a dream. After many long days of vacuuming, he discovered the source of the Jell-O expansion. The rapidly expanding jello pushed him back, and after many long minutes, he could almost touch the growth/shrink ray

The end.

The boys are running from Principal Gary and the whole school.

Pebbles “Come on, come on”

Bobert: “Hey, I know ”

Both: So you're probably wondering how we got here. Let's all start at the beginning of it all in 7th-grade Science Class. You see, Pebbles and Bobert were sitting next to each other in science, and then, all of a sudden, they thought. “This is so boring, we need to do something, Pebbles,” exclaimed Bobert. “I know, I know, I'll get us out of here.” All of a sudden, Pebbles pulled out a Mentos and a Diet Coke You already know where this is going After all of that big mess, Bobert and Pebbles were trapped in Principal Gary’s office, and trust me, they were in big trouble. Principal Gary walked in and sat down, “Do you boys even know what you have cost me?” He shouted. “Uhm, maybe that big bald head of yours,” Bobert said as they both laughed in unison. “Jaja, very funny,” Principal Gary said. “But you boys need to stop, 1 more thing and there will be immense consequences ” As Pebbles and Bobert were dismissed from the principal's office They both laughed, then went to math The next day, it was lunch in a sad, glum-looking Hamburger Middle School And Pebbles and Bobert were feeling bored, so they started a food fight. Next thing you know, there is bread, mashed potatoes, tacos, and pizza flying everywhere. It was absolute chaos, with the mix of screaming and people yelling, “Stop the fight, Pebbles, stop the fight.” But it was more like a war at this point. Pebbles and Bobert felt on top of the world; they were the leaders of it all. But then Juan Carlos Pablo dos Santos the 3rd screamed, “Wait, Pebbles and Bobert started it ” All of a sudden, they went from being the top to the smallest. Now everybody was chasing after them, and that's when we got back to the present. “So that's how we got here,” the boys both exclaimed. “Except you left out the part where Principal Gary had a banana peel on his bald head. “Jajajajajajajajaja.” They both laughed in unison. With everybody chasing them, they needed quick thinking. “Look, Bobert, the utility closet.” They jumped in fast, and they were safe for now. “Pebbles, this is the best worst prank ever.” “Yeah, it is ” After both caught their breath, they jumped out of the closet to see that the coast was clear They ran to their English class to get their backpacks. When they arrived, the teacher was there, so Pebbles had some quick thinking and threw a window-shattering rock at the window, and that gave them time to get their stuff. After that, they ran to the B wing bathroom, and they had an idea. They climbed, took off the white panel on the ceiling, and climbed into the perfect hiding spot. But then they crawled around in the ceiling to get the perfect spot Now, Pebbles and Bobert were just watching TikTok, waiting for the day to end, when suddenly Brap “eeewww pebbles you farted” Bobert was scrambling so hard to get away that the ceiling broke out. And there they were, Pebbles and Bober, exposed to the whole school hunting after them. They ran as fast as they could when Principal Gary was catching up because he used to run track. As they were about to escape, they closed down the security shields, and Bobert and Pebbles had to go fast. They quickly slid under and out of the school. Safe for now. Bobert and Pebbles will return

It was a Tuesday when I first noticed it. I guess it had been in the back of my mind for a while, but nevertheless.

Gilbert was not a normal fish; he had the normal look of a goldfish, golden, common, but Gilbert was special.

I was the first to notice, as I was his owner, I am not important, Gilbert is… was. It was an early morning, I was getting ready for work, and I noticed something peculiar. Gilbert had arranged his darker pebbles in a large pile and was flicking some of the lighter pebbles in the air, then he started bouncing against the bowl.

At first, I passed it off as Gilbert being weird, then just that afternoon, it started raining, with light wind, and I was soaked.

When I came back, Gilbert was doing the same peculiar thing. As he saw me, he turned away as if saying, “I tried to tell you!”

Then it hit me, Gilbert was trying to warn me of the rain!

As the months passed, I learned more and more of Gilbert's powers Every time there was a weather change, he would arrange his pebbles to forecast it. His pebbles aren’t bright or playful; they’re smooth river stones in shades of slate gray, mossy green, dark-mutted blue, and cream. The patterns weren't detailed or even good. Every morning, he rearranges his pebbles into shapes that predict the day’s weather: a wobbly, indistinct sun for clear skies, a swirl for wind, and a pile in the corner if there’s going to be rain. There were a few variations that he did, like if it was bad, then he would flick different colored pebbles up to indicate that.

I could never have known that my fascination with Gilbert was the beginning of the end One day, I came in to check on Gilbert's bowl when I saw him doing something different from his normal shapes. He had a swirl for wind, with a massive pile of blue in the middle, and he was throwing all of his pebbles frantically If he were right, then there would be a hurricane/tornado/tsunami, the end of my city. It was then that I knew that Atlantis was in danger.

I tried to warn people, but they didn't buy my totally believable “my fish can predict the future” story. That day Atlantis sank, but not for the reason you might think. When the disaster came, Gilbert did something insane As the multiple disasters struck, Gilbert started levitating and pulsing with multicolored energy, with a flash and a boom, Gilbert destroyed the disasters, killing himself in the process. Unfortunately, all the energy being released caused a large earthquake and sank Atlantis With his last effort, Gilbert created a shield that protected us from the ocean, people, and animals. Ever since then, Gilbert has been remembered as the pebble prophet, the fish that saved Atlantis.

I was one of the richest men in the world, I was about to make my first billion, so I wanted to celebrate the occasion. I wanted to travel to my old neighborhood, as we pulled in I gasped, it was a ghost town! There were no lights on in the houses and graffiti on the walls, the only sign of the lively town that one stood there was a shop at the end of the street I asked Crowley (my driver) to go to the shop and let me out, weakly protesting he started “but I don't think-”

“Now is not a time to argue with me Crowley” I snapped He reluctantly unlocked the door to my limo, as I approached the shop I readyed myself to deal with the commoners.

As I stepped in the shop a wave of heat hit me, an old man sat at the counter, wrinkles creasing his face, and an old cane by the checkout counter. As he saw me he smiled, “back again I see” I was confused, “do I know you?” His reply only puzzled me even more, “Know me, yes, remember me, no ”

Then as the final straw I noticed the shelves behind him Jars, Jars, and more Jars, each was labeled with a neat slip of paper, and had… a swirling faintly blue light inside, though some of them had red or black energy in them. Many of the labels read impossible things like “First breakup” or "Hurricane" then I noticed something even more disconcerting, the labels on the jars had names on them too, and many of them were mine! By the time I noticed this I had been gawking for a while, noticing my posture I straightened myself and closed my mouth

Calmly as I could I asked “Why is my name on some of the jars?”

The man calmly replied “they are from the last time you were here.” I press harder , “what is inside the jars?” The man smiled, “memories, the things that people come to me to forget.”

Placing a pen and an old piece of paper on the table he said “so, enough dilly dallying, what will it be this time?”

I take a closer look at the paper and realise it is a contract it reads, The person who signs this contract will submit one memory of their choice to the owner of this shop, the memory giver will not remember the exchange or the shop. Reading farther I saw what I needed, The Return Policy, I read on, should the owner want their memories back they will receive them, if they know the cost it comes with. I look up at the man, “ I have my memories back?”

Oddly the man sighed, “You might now want to do that ” “

Why not? I asked,

“You do this every time, and you always want to put them back in the jar”

I take a moment to consider,

“I still want them” “ok then” he says, he goes to the back of the store and opens all of the jars with my name on it It was like nothing else I had ever experienced, the people I had cheated, the spite I had had, and worse of all my own ruthlessness and greed

I now know why my old town was gone, I had done it I remembered my other visits, becoming a worse and worse person with every important memory, every cut corner, every hurt person. I walked out of the shop in a daze, Crowley nervously escorted me to my limo. From that moment forward I tried to be a better person, I never went back to that shop, because our memories are what we need to reflect and be better with every mistake.

Some things are better not forgotten, even if they hurt

that it is so far-away because it's right in front of our noses, but we can’t and never will see it. In that blind spot of ours, there is a little universe, happening the same time that ours…

The Pug in a Rug’s Diary

I am a hungry and lonely dog in flesh and bone. I once had a home, but now I am alone. I will tell you my secret, diary, of how I got here and how I became the pug in a rug. It was just 120 hours and 21 minutes ago. I was devouring delicious food while not needing it. I was with my inefficient ritual of a picky eater and “1% eat, 100% mess”. I was a dumb and lazy and useless pug at that time. I was in a “croad creep” with my owners. The name of this is not even remotely related. Not any creeps, whatever is a croad, but it may just be my once deaf ears. We were in a moving fortress, which was a little bit nausea-inducing. As as stupid as I was, I jumped out of "that smoll windough”, which I thought when you passed through it you won “qooky” dough, a delicious, marvelous food. But I fell out, and rolled through the ground. I thought this was just a mere game, and waited for 5 hours straight, for my non-returning owners.

Now at this time, I now understand my owners wanted to get rid of me, intentionally, with a great reason. Anyway, when I realized that they weren't coming, I found myself a rug, after days of searching refuge, and with new wisdom. And after I found it, it was soft, fluffy, anything better that my previous and devious “Owners” had gave me. But in the green, shelter is limited,(lots of comas alert) so a pack of my wild, powerful, ancestors, the wolves, came to compete for my comfy, little rug. They are right now devouring me, and I fear this is going to be my last entry. And so this is my story, the story of the pug in a
