A Legacy Worth Leaving A Legacy Plan is made up of the following components:

• Family Trust: This Trust, tailored to your family’s needs, is the foundation of your Legacy Plan. It holds the bulk of your assets in a flexible manner, leaving you in charge of your property during your lifetime. After you pass away, it lets you distribute your assets as you see fit – without the need for probate. It also reaches into the future, allowing you to protect your loved ones’ inheritances from divorce, financial predators, and their own inexperience and poor judgment. • Pour-Over Will: A Pour-Over Will is necessary for two purposes. If you have minor children, it allows you to name a guardian or “tutor” in case you die before they reach adulthood. Whether or not you have younger children, you need a Pour-Over Will to “catch” any assets left out of your Trust and “pour” the assets into the Trust, ensuring all of your assets are distributed according to a single, uniform plan.

Leaving a legacy means more than providing an inheritance for your children. Too often, inheritances are squandered and forgotten. A legacy, on the other hand, means leaving behind not just financial security, but a sense of family history, belonging, and purpose, generation after generation. You’ve spent years diligently saving and carefully planning to build a nest egg, but how do you transform what you’ve built into a legacy for your children, your grandchildren, and the generations to come? It’s a job that goes beyond basic estate planning. One way to accomplish this job is through Legacy Planning.

Discovering Purpose BY CHRISSY CIFUENTES

For Havilah Malone, uncovering purpose is a passion that is instilled deep within her soul. She is a motivational speaker, author and actress whose ultimate goal is to touch and change 2 billion people’s lives with her messages of encouragement, strength, and motivation. Malone is a two-time #1 Best Selling Author of “How to Become a Publicity Magnet : In Any Market via TV, Radio & Print” and co-Author of the Think & Grow Rich children’s classic, “The Amazing Adventures of Oliver Hill” based on Napoleon Hill’s Principles of Success. Each day, Malone is determined to fulfill her destiny. In just a few days, her viral, motivational post on Goalcast’s social media platforms reached over one million views. Not only is her video consistently climbing the charts, but also are her successes. Malone’s dreams of unlocking people’s destinies and impacting positive change began during her college career. Her passion for communication and psychology is what ignited a self-discovery journey and propelled her into her purpose. She graduated from the University of New Orleans at the age of 19 with degrees in Dramatic Arts and Communication and a Minor in Psychology. “I have always had a passion for communicating empowering stories that matter, coupled with understanding how the human mind works and the root cause of why we do what we do,” said Malone. “These two things have played an integral part in everything that I have done and will do.” During her last semester at UNO, she completed an internship with Fox 8 WVUE. She worked in the news room, and in a short period of time, was hired as a Production Assistant. Although her talents were being utilized in a platform that she has always imagined, Malone knew deep within that

the traditional news industry was not for her. “After 2 years of reporting on rapes, murders, and fires, it became very daunting,” she said. “I wasn’t fulfilling my dream of being on TV using my voice or talent to empower people. I was still holding back from fully pursuing my goals and honoring my internal call.” Malone decided to leave news and was presented with a position in Corporate America. At the age of 21, she was running a multi-million dollar company and served as a spokesperson on The Home Shopping Network, QVC, and more. Malone took her communication skills to television; however, she found herself in a hidden depression. Her hard-work and determination presented her with all of the outwards signs of success, but on the inside, she was struggling with conflict. “I worked for a great company, had an amazing team, but deep down inside, I lost sense of my own identity,” stated Malone. “I was meant for something deeper, something much more. But, I hadn’t quite figured it out yet, because I didn’t even know who I was.” Little did Malone know that God was about to surprise her with a new path. In July of 2012, her company took an economic downturn and decided to do a massive layoff. Malone was one of those who were let go. “It was shocking at first, but it turned into a huge blessing in disguise. I had come to a fork in the road and could accept another position with the company, or I could do some self-work and rediscover what I really loved,” said Malone. She chose the road to self-discovery and allowed an uncomfortable situation to propel her into her next season. “God always had my back even if it meant pushing me out of the nest, so I could learn how to fly.” While on her path to self-discovery, Malone encountered a program that changed her life forever. She watched an Oprah Winfrey special with Tony Robbins. Robbins is a popular

Malone was captivated by Robbins and his perspective on life. “I watched all the ‘aha’ moments, breakthroughs, and they were even walking on fire,” said Malone. “I knew that one day I wanted to have that same experience.” After watching the television event, Malone had dreams to attend her very own Tony Robbins conference, and she made it a reality. Nine months after watching that program, Malone and her friend attended the exact conference. Not only did she walk on fire like Oprah, but also she joined the Tony Robbins Platinum Partnership. This allowed her access to an exclusive program where a smaller group of people truly were committed to their growth. “I began to learn how to harness the power of my own mind to create any outcome I wanted, how to rewrite neural pathways and retrain my brain, and how to heal from past trauma and hurt,” said Malone. “It was a new world, although very different from my upbringing which brought me way outside my comfort zone, I knew I was on the right track and being led by my Creator on the path that was right for me.” Malone attributes her renewal to Tony Robbins and his teachings. These many experiences traveling with Robbins led her to launching her very own non-profit organization called “Living Beyond the Box.” Tony Robbins showed Malone that taking a hold of her dreams could turn into a reality with the correct mindset. As her birthday rolled around, Malone asked herself what the next season had in store. Little did she know that she would be embarking on a childhood fantasy which would once again steer her into her purpose. In 2017, Malone watched as her cousin

competed in the Miss USA pageant. She made it to the Top 10, and Malone’s dreams of becoming a queen cascaded across her mind. Once again, Malone took hold of her dreams and was determined to have them become a reality. “I started doing a ton of research, reaching out to past and present pageant queens and watching YouTube videos,” stated Malone. “I found that there is a Pageant World all its own! There is truly something for everyone.” Havilah Malone was crowned Ms. Louisiana Universal 2018 on October seventh 2017. All of her hard-work and research paid off as she had her silver and blue sapphire crown placed upon her head. For Malone, this title was another check off of her list. While walking down the catwalk with her crown, she knew that she would be viewed as a role model for women of all ages, races, and cultures. “It was a dream come true. Although I was born a queen, as we all are, on that day I got to wear the crown too! And many more dreams have continued to come true for me,” she said. With her title, Malone was presented with numerous opportunities to travel across the world promoting her platform. Her platform, “Be Proof Of What’s Possible”, was geared to encouraging young women to follow their dreams and to live a bold and beautiful life. “Young ladies need to know that they can shine the outside of a cup all day long, but if the inside is dirty, no one will want to drink from it.” Malone explains that true beauty begins from the inside out and that treating others with kindness displays characteristics of a true beauty queen. “Learn to love every aspect about yourself, even the scars, the few extra pounds, the crooked teeth or whatever it might be. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look pretty based on our own concept, but make sure that it is your concept.” What are the next steps for this multi-talented millennial? She has her eyes set on television. Malone has already been featured on world-wide networks such as FOX, NBC, ABC and CBS. Also, she was a guest star on the popular television program NCIS: New Orleans. However, Malone has her sights set on Hollywood, and she is ready to take on the entertainment industry. “Since middle school, I have always wanted to play a lawyer on television. That is the next goal! School is out, sunny skies are above, and endless days by the pool are ready to be shared. Summertime in Louisiana is a time where families get together to enjoy delicious snow balls and brisk walks through the park. In the New Orleans region, it is a season of relaxation and renewal. For our Lifestyles Health and Wealth team, summer is a time of bright, new beginnings. Let’s take a sneak peek at some of the events and stories that have recently impacted the world of Lifestyles Health and Wealth. Our very first Arts and Culture event paved the way for our exciting summer season. On April 2 at Abita Brewery in Covington, the Lifestyles Health and Wealth team collaborated for the first annual show. Members of the community came out to the grounds and experienced an exciting time of entertainment, arts, and crawfish! Vendors from a variety of businesses set up tents and shared their purposes while showcasing their crafts. The day began with a 5k run and 1 mile fun run for participants. Runners had the opportunity to take in the beauty of the Northshore as they ran through the grounds of Abita Brewery. For Lifestyles Health and Wealth publisher, Nicole Justice, the run was organized in order to promote healthy living and create a balanced lifestyle. Being an avid runner herself, it was a chance for Justice to share her passion for running with others while also making a positive impact within the community. Not only were adults of all ages allowed to participate, but also young children were involved. Winners of all ages gathered around the stage to accept their awards and hear their impressive running times. According to Justice, this was the first of many races for the Lifestyles Health and Wealth platform. After the races were complete, the mainstage musical line up began. Multi-talented performers entertained the masses and took the opportunity to speak out on their purpose through their artistry. New Orleans performer Marshall Harris wowed the audience while singing jazzy favorites in his dazzling top hat. The “Queen of Gospel” herself, Linda Wright, sang her heart out as she captivated the crowds with Gospel favorites. As the evening progressed, other performers such as Joanna Hale-McGill, Andy Rebirth and Burke, and Dominique Hammons took the stage. Members from Teen Musical the Movie were also present to share their musical talents with the audience. The gift of music is such a staple in the New Orleans region, and Lifestyles Health and Wealth was determined to heal through these artists and their musical ministries. Thank you to all of our performers for sharing their beautiful talents with us. For festival goers, one of the best parts of the day was chowing down on flavorful crawfish! Numerous teams participated in the first annual crawfish cook off, and the mudbugs did not disappoint. Each batch was served up hot for those in attendance. The panel of celebrity judges which included local dignitaries, community leaders, and entertainers voted Mercedes Benz of New Orleans the overall winners. However, all teams were recognized and appreciated for the love of their communities and support for our publication. Partners and affiliates of Lifestyles Health and Wealth also had the opportunity to come up to the platform, share their purpose, and promote their products. Our cover story, Havilah Malone, engaged the crowd while speaking about her purpose and journey as Ms. Louisiana Universal. It was a time of encouragement for all to hear. Inspiring Our Future Generation with Purpose Empower The Block School Movement BY LADANA WILLIAMS

Every child deserves a solid education and a fair chance in life. We want to share a story of an underserved and overlooked high school in Jonesville, one of the poorest cities in Louisiana. Block High School is a school plagued with inequity and injustice. The students at Block High feel forgotten and overlooked because they have very limited access to education. Not only are the facilities unsanitary and mold-filled, but many of the buildings are unsafe. The teachers and administrators are not equipped to prepare students to succeed and compete academically. In fact, the PE teacher who inspired students to speak out about their unacceptable conditions, also teaches world history, geography and ACT Prep – none of which he is certified to teach. Student advocate, Shir’Cold Bowman, describes Block High School as a “daycare for teenagers,” and because public schools in rural areas get little national attention, very few people are aware of this unfit environment for students. However, led by her sincere plea, Shi’Cold raised awareness of the issues at Block High School with a featured interview on Now This that went viral, bringing initial attention to the school’s deplorable conditions. Following that video, the #EmpowertheBlock Movement began, and quickly picked up momentum. Led by best-selling author and motivational speaker Havilah Malone, local leaders, community influencers, business professionals and everyday people joined forces to rally behind students, question local authority, purchase books and supplies, make donations and share messages of inspiration with Block High School. This village of believers gave much needed attention to the student body, providing significant support to the school and local community leaders so they could continue to take steps in preparing students for life after high school. In order for students like Shi’Cold to remain passionate about learning, hopeful about their futures, and keep their faith in society, major changes were needed.

Since the Empower the Block Movement began, Havilah Malone worked directly with teachers at Block High School, along with members of the Education Coalition, to identify supplies and materials needed for the students. This led to the creation of an Amazon Wish List which allowed the supplies to be sent directly to the school for the students’ benefit. Individuals around the country purchased items through the Amazon Wish List including books, graph paper, pens, computer keyboards, chairs, sports equipment and much more. Funds were also donated to the Block High School “Future Business Leaders of America” Program from organizations including Coca-Cola, PresMoore Estates Group, Empaq Group and more. During a recent empowerment visit to Block High School, Havilah Malone and local community leaders traveled to Jonesville, Louisiana to deliver more than 400 Schools Supplies Kits donated by community partners at Aetna Better Health of Louisiana, along with a check for $1,000. Nearly 200 students gathered in the school auditorium, many of them moved to tears of gratitude and joy while watching an empowerment video with messages of encouragement from leaders around the country, including the Mayor of New Orleans, Latoya Cantrell. The students shared that they no longer felt alone in their movement for equal education and social justice. The work of the local Education Coalition, Jonesville Mayor and students has led to the placement of a new superintendent, school principal and teachers, as well as significant improvements to the school, foundation and internal repairs, to name a few! You may think your journey starts and ends with an investment plan. While that’s a key piece to the puzzle, it’s equally important to consider your own money story: What is your enough? You can apply the same concept to a salary bonus or tax refund in an effort to build your savings.

• Save first, spend second – Once you’re confident that you’ve been able to cut expenses, set up a monthly investment plan in which money can be automatically withdrawn from your bank account or paycheck. You could consider opening an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), take advantage of your employer’s 401(k) plan if offered, or set up an automatic investment plan that withdraws a set amount from your bank account each month. • Money is a tool – While following the above steps is important, keep the bigger picture in mind. Take this as an opportunity to figure out how money can be a tool for living out your faith, expressing your generosity, and contributing to your community. While all of this takes a little extra work, you’ll gain a holistic view of your finances and can start taking small – but meaningful – steps on your wise with money journey. Understanding Billing Terms

Below is a list of some of the common billing terms that can help you become educated, so that you are not caught off guard the next time you receive a medical bill. Ambulatory Surgery: outpatient surgery or surgery that does not require an overnight hospital stay. Ancillary Service: services you receive beyond room and board charges, such as laboratory tests, therapy, surgery, etc. Appeal: process by which you, your doctor or your hospital, can object to your health plan when you disagree with the health plan’s decision to deny payment for your care. Applied to Deductible: portion of your bill, as defined by your insurance company, that you owe your provider. Co-Insurance: patient pays a defined percentage of the value (test value $300, with co-insurance 20%. Patient pays $60).

Understanding Your Hospital Bill Whether it was a planned procedure or an unplanned emergency, a hospital visit can often place patients and their loved ones in a stressful situation – and that’s before the bill arrives. Hospital bills are notoriously difficult to understand, especially when they involve extended stays or complex treatments. According to a 2016 public opinion survey, around 72% of American consumers are confused by their medical bills. Even when covered by insurance or Medicare, you may find unexpected balances due to odd procedural codes, a slew of medical jargon, and insurance adjustments. As a patient at Slidell Memorial Hospital, you or your insurance company will receive a bill for services provided by the hospital, as well as a separate bill from any physicians from whom you received care. Pathologists, radiologists, cardiologists, anesthesiologists and other specialists are required to submit separate bills. If you have questions about these bills, please call the number printed on the statement you received.

Co-payment: flat fee for certain expenses (primary = $10/ visit, specialty = $20/visit). Deductible: amount you must pay for medical services before your insurance company starts to pay. Explanation of Benefits (EOB): notice you receive from your insurance company after your bill has been processed or paid. The notice tells you the amount the provider billed, the amount paid by your insurance and what you have to pay. Inpatient (IP): acute hospital stay, usually greater than 24 hours that includes documented evidence of the need for inpatient care. Observation: type of service used by doctors and hospitals to decide whether you need inpatient hospital care or whether you can recover at home or in an outpatient area. This may include overnight stay. Out-of-Pocket Costs: costs the patient is responsible for because Medicare or other insurance does not cover them. Outpatient (OP): service you receive in one day at a hospital or clinic without being admitted as an Observation or Inpatient. Prepayments: money you pay before receiving medical care; also referred to as preadmission deposits.

In Louisiana our culture and backgrounds are as diverse as seafood gumbo! Did you know that our family genes determine how our skin ages? Supporting the weaknesses in our unique DNA gene blue print can in part turn back the sands of time. As we age our skin loses moisture and elasticity, making it prone to developing fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores. We also lose our ability to produce collagen and elastin, causing the skin to become less firm and lose its flexibility. While developing wrinkles is an unavoidable part of the aging process, it can be slowed down or prevented to some degree. Most wrinkling is due to extrinsic aging, which is caused by environmental factors and lifestyle choices such as smoking, sun exposure, alcohol abuse, air pollution, poor diet, and lack of sleep. Prolonged sun exposure is by far the leading cause of early wrinkling. UV light breaks down the collagen and elastin fibers that form our skin’s connective tissues. As a result, the skin becomes weaker and less elastic, causing photo damage and wrinkles to appear. Good news is, there are ways you can protect your skin from the sun, including daily use of sunscreen (containing zinc or titanium), and wearing protective clothing. Maintaining a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and not smoking are other important ways to combat extrinsic aging. Intrinsic aging, on the other hand, is the natural process our skin goes through as we get older and is dependent on our genetic DNA makeup. Age-related gene DNA changes vary from person to person based on an individual’s genetics and the body’s many internal processes. Your DNA genes play a deciding factor in how your skin ages with time much

in the same way they affect whether you are short or tall, or have blue eyes versus brown eyes. A sign of intrinsic aging, for example, is thinner and more fragile skin that occurs naturally over time. Genetics also determine our ability to generate collagen and elastin, which give us elasticity and resistance to wrinkles and enlarged pores. Genetic variants in the MMP1 and STXBP5L genes specifically have been associated with increased risk of developing wrinkles. When the Lord called me to move to Louisiana, I really had no idea what I was in for. But, now having been here for 10 years, this I know to be true. Louisiana people LIVE LIFE LARGE. They are large in FUN, FAMILY, FAITH, and LOVE! I love this about the people of Louisiana. I have no biological family here, and yet I have more family than I’ve ever had because of the loving, caring, and open nature of the wonderful people in Louisiana. Let’s be real! People here love to commune together and one of the main focuses is FOOD. And we all know that a lot of the food that is so famous here is NOT VERY HEALTHY! So, what do we do about that? Never partake? Give it all up? 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says: Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. In this scripture, we are being reminded that we are in control of what we do to and with our bodies; BUT our bodies are a GIFT to us (we are somewhat “renting” them), and we are responsible for the upkeep of our

bodies. How we take care of our bodies determines the quality of life these bodies will give us. We make the choice of how we will do it. My advice is one you have probably heard before. EVERYTHING IN MODERATION. In past articles, I have spoken about the fact that nutrition is at least 80% of the equation of healthy living (along with strength training and cardiovascular training). As I tell my clients: we all have to be able to “live life”. I think that can be a little tougher in this state with all the focus on food, so enjoying the Louisiana treats in moderation will let you partake without endangering your health or seeing the scale tip to a number you dislike. Keep in mind that the more you participate in strength training and cardiovascular training, the more “wiggle” room you have to enjoy your Louisiana treats! By Chrissy Cifuentes For centuries, the theatrical arts have played a monumental role in our city’s history. Popular theatre performances and performers have graced local stages and captivated audiences. Many of those performers fulfilled their dreams of making it to Broadway. But for most, fame and fortune are not needed to keep the art alive. It is a deep passion from within that creates and sustains the magic of musical theatre. Musical theatre has been a huge part of my life since I was a freshmen in high school. My high school drama teacher instilled a love for the arts in me while giving me my first chance to perform. As I got older, I cultivated my talents and started doing community theatre in St. John Parish. I performed in summer productions throughout high school and college until I graduated. Roles like Mayzie in “Seussical the Musical” and Jolene in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” were just a few of the many characters that helped to shape my theatrical career. After college, I took a few years off in order to establish my career, get married and start my new life. It was not until the summer of 2018 that I rekindled my love for theatre in the River Parish Community Theatre production of “Beauty and the Beast.” Not only did I have the opportunity to play my all-time favorite role, Belle, but also I had the incredible experience of sharing the stage with my husband. It was truly a magical experience, but without the team of individuals which make up River Parish Community Theatre, it would not have been possible.

River Parish Community Theatre is a hidden gem within the small-town of Reserve. Although it is considered a community theatre, the performances suggest otherwise. The theatre group is now preparing for the show “Mary Poppins.” I have the honor of playing the role of Mary, and I cannot wait to share the stage with such talented performers. Making Disney magic on a stage for your local community is indescribable, and I would not want to work with any other team of people to make this dream into a reality. With dancing chimney sweeps, an enchanted park and much more, “Mary Poppins” is ready to captivate audiences of all ages. A Story of Triumph with Purpose

Karen Roy is currently Ms. Wheelchair America, and each day she serves as an advocate and encourager for those who are disabled. Roy continually fights for the rights of those who are seeking a better quality of life and is determined to educate government officials and leaders about the monumental technologies that can assist those who are paralyzed. Her title allows her to magnify her platform which is extremely close to her heart, and she continues to share her inspirational story of triumph while embracing her life as Ms. Wheelchair America. Roy’s incredible story began back in 1987. She was a sophomore at Louisiana State University studying psychology. Like many fun-loving college students, Roy enjoyed hanging out with friends and attending sporting events. One night, Roy and her boyfriend decided to go to a football game and listen to music after an exciting day of cheering for their team. While walking back to their car after a night out, the pair discovered that their vehicle had been broken into. Suddenly, Roy and her friend were attacked by three, armed teenage boys. The boys hit Roy over the head and stole her purse. However, next violent event during the struggle is what changed her life forever. “One of them put their gun in my back and pulled the trigger. They shot at my boyfriend too, but they missed,” said Roy. “My boyfriend realized I was shot, laid me on the ground, and I struggled to breathe. My lung was punctured, and I almost bled to death.” Roy was rushed to the hospital where she discovered that her world would be completely different than the life she had imagined. “It was 24 to 48 hours after the attack that I realized that I would be paralyzed.” All three of the attackers were found and arrested. Roy’s shooter has a sentence of 248 years in prison. Although her world was quickly turned upside down, young Roy decided to not give up hope. She had many questions about what her life would look like as a paralyzed woman; however, she knew one thing. She was determined that one day she would become the best mother to her future children. “I remember my first thought was if I could still have children,” stated Roy. “So, I started learning everything that I could in order to make that dream

possible.” Shortly after her attack, Roy started to do her research on how she could continue living her life to the fullest. She began her rehabilitation processed and learned about Functional Electrical Simulation or “FES.” “As soon as I realized these methods existed, we fought the insurance company so that I could receive these treatments in order to stay as healthy as possible,” said Roy. “These methods helped me so that I could go back to school and finish my undergrad.” After receiving her bachelor’s degree in psychology, Roy completed her master’s in social work. She attributes her accomplishments to her strong faith in the Lord. “God has always had his hand on me. Before I got shot, during the time that I was shot, and ever since then, God has guided me through,” said Roy. “He works through me, and I feel so humbled when people say that. He just gives me what I needed to get through it.” Not only did Roy finish her education, but also her dream of becoming a mother became a reality. She married and had three children who are now 25, 21 and 19 years old. As her children grew, so did her passion for fighting for those with disabilities. “In my career, I tried mental health and ending up doing medical social work, but I found my real calling in physical rehabilitation,” said Roy. “I wanted to help people like me to find a new way of living.” Roy worked for ten years in Baton

Rouge acting as an advocate on local and state levels. It was not until receiving a position at a company called Numotion that her platform increased nationwide. “When I started working for Numotion, I went to Washington D.C. and did some intense work. I could not understand why people weren’t working with the newest technology,” she said. “I started educating legislature on why we need standing technology and FES equipment. They don’t know that unless we go and tell them.” After years of fighting for the rights of those who could not fight for themselves, Roy decided to do something she had never imagined. She entered the Ms. Wheelchair Louisiana pageant and was crowned. queen Her lifetime of education and advocacy prepared her for this new title, and the crown gave her even more of a reason to continue the fight. “I was encouraging people with disabilities to stand up for the rights for people to have the standing technology and electrical stem,” said Roy. “It is a non-profit and you have to do your own fundraising. I got into the media and rolled right into news stations with my crown!” Right before her fiftieth birthday, Roy completed for the title of Ms. Wheelchair America. She and 26 other contestants told their stories and advocated for their platform in order to make a difference within the lives of so many others

struggling with the same afflictions. Little did Roy know that her story captivated the judges in indescribable ways. “I won the lifetime achievement award and Ms. Congeniality. That was such an honor, because it is voted on by the other women,” said Roy. “I didn’t think I was going to end up in the top 5, but to my surprise, I ended up winning Ms. Wheelchair America!” she said. “I was the first woman from Louisiana to win. Since then, I was able to spread that message in over 75 live visits, 40 cities and 25 states.” According to Roy, her journey as an advocate is only getting started. Her plans to serve the disabled community and travel throughout the nation are continually increasing. During her reign, she has visited many who need an encouraging touch and gentle reminder that life can still become beautiful after a horrific situation. For those who are struggling to cope with a life-changing events, Roy had words of empowerment and love. “Number one, never lose hope. Nobody knows what their ultimate recovery is going to look like. Reimagining Today’s Youth Today’s There’s a problem going on. And it needs fixing. Teens are constantly self-conscious. And quite honestly, people in general. Teens are people too, which tends to get forgotten. We are not a giant collective category. More accurately, teens should be considered as individual beings. H​ow do you see yourself?​ Stereotypes and what people perceive you to be based on your looks, gender, and race etc affect how you might see yourself. Many different things are tied to why you see yourself a certain way. Example being you live or typically hang out in an environment where you are considered anomalous because you don’t “fit” into the box many people around you do. Or when the media surrounding you mutters ways to fix yourself because you are seemingly “broken”. I have a friend who has a pretty high self esteem and doesn’t follow society’s standards. She sees herself as beautiful no matter what others think. And in reality, has no idea how strangers see her. And she’s ok with that. We should all be like that friend.

S​elf-esteem is ssentially how much you value and love yourself. How much do you believe you are worth? It’s important to know what influences self-esteem. Media, school, and your environment all play a vital role in how you value and see yourself. Self-esteem heavily influences people’s choices and decisions, therefore making it a motivational function or tool. Having a higher self-esteem leads to higher care for yourself. Higher self-esteem also means you are more likely to follow your aspired goals. In short, it’s healthy to have a high self-esteem. I suggest believing in yourself. If you doubt yourself nine times out of ten then believe in your capabilities nine times out of ten. Remember to forever be yourself, because you’ll be much happier and well...you! Judy Garland once said, “Always be a first rate version of yourself and not a second rate version of someone else.”

S​tereotypes and Imaging​ Have an impact in our daily lives. It even fuels misinformation. If you start telling a certain group of people they are one specific thing only, that group of people begin to believe that to some extent over a period of time. In a way, putting this label or box around people inevitably leads them to fulfill their stereotypical prophecy. Sometimes we feel obligated to submit to a trend or a sort of imaging. Maybe it’s become so natural these days that it’s become harder to break from that unfortunate habit. Simply think of this: Regardless of what trend you submit to or what you decide to do with your imaging, you will be judged. So being comfortably you makes obtaining happiness a lot easier. Holistic Healing It has been said in Louisiana that we don’t eat to live we live to eat! But what are we eating? Is it creating a lineage of unnecessary suffering? I remember when I was young my parents would have the entire family work in the garden. Tilling the soil, planting the seeds, watering the plants, and making sure that there were ways to keep the animals out were all important factors to growing food that would eventually make it to our hungry bellies. One story connects with Kingston on a much deeper level. “There was one grandmother who started crying, because her granddaughter was having heart surgery. One of her wishes was to go to Disney, and they were going to choose that trip over getting the tree taken care of,” he said. “I told her, I want you to take your granddaughter to Disney, and we will do this for free for you,” said Kingston. The Tree Wisemen established a beautiful relationship with their client due to God’s calling on their lives. “We met our client’s granddaughter after her Disney trip, and we were even the first person that the grandmother called after her granddaughter’s surgery. That is so special to know that we touched their lives just by being obedient to God’s calling.”

I feel this quote means that true beauty comes from within the soul, and doesn’t really exist without a good and honest heart. I am someone, who has become somewhat of an advocate for the future of our plant and animal life. No, I’m not an activist or an environmentalist, I am a nurturer, I am a woman. Most people do not know that the beauty industry can be a very cruel world. And now is the time for people like you and me to end the suffering that is animal cruelty. About two years ago, I decided to go on a journey that would change my whole perspective of the makeup industry. After learning how to artfully and somewhat professionally apply makeup through various YouTube tutorials, I gained an appreciation and love for the craft.

You may notice that on some of your most used products a symbol of a bunny with the words “Cruelty-Free.” Without this symbol on the packaging, the product you are using is most likely tested on animals. I know what you’re thinking, there are so many problems in the world, why does this matter so much? The beauty industry is a conglomerate. They set the stage around the world of what’s acceptable in modern women’s society. In China, third party testing is not only required, it’s the law if a company wants to sell and distribute internationally. And by third party testing I mean animal testing. Pulling up the curtain behind this matter was very disturbing, while thinking of my own pets throughout the years, I could never imagine an innocent, sentient being forced against their will, starved and sometimes even tortured, for the sake of Beauty? How can we even dare to call this industry beautiful when it’s so very ugly? This is where we come in. We make a choice every time we step into an Ulta or a drugstore. My solution is to start small. I decluttered my entire makeup collection and now, I only purchase products that have that famous bunny on the label. It’s a small step in the right direction towards a better society, and for the protection and equality of all living beings on this planet.

Gospel music is a staple of New Orleans heritage and culture. From its origin, Gospel has given life to some of the most unimaginable situations. Hymns about God’s love, redemption and salvation are just a few of the songs echoing in the churches and into people’s hearts. The words being sung are filled with biblical truth and inspirational wisdom. There are many Gospel singers throughout our great city; however, one stands out from the rest. Her name is Joanna Hale-McGill, and she is a musical minister with a great purpose. Joanna Hale-McGill was born in New Orleans into a gospel singing home. Her mother raised her in the church, and she was surrounded by the music. At a very young age, she discovered that her mother’s talent was passed down to her. She knew that it was a gift from God and that it was her duty to use that gift for His glory. “We discovered I had a talent for singing in 1992 when my uncle passed away,” said Hale-McGill. “I was eight years old, and I just started singing. No one was expecting me to sing!” A few year passed, and Hale-McGill joined her school choir and was given the opportunity to perform a solo for her sixth grade graduation. At such a young age, she captivated the hearts of those listening as she sang the song, “Wherever You Are” by Terry Ellis. However, the song was re-written to fit the graduation, and she had to learn brand new lyrics in a short period of time. “I had to learn that song in less than 24 hours, and it started it all,” stated Hale-McGill. While in junior high school, Hale-McGill continued to cultivate her singing techniques while working with Leo Jones of “1+ Productions”. According to her, working with him gave her the foundation on which she stands on today. “We would work with him and then perform at many different events. We would perform in churches, events across the city, and Black History performances,” she said. “Working with him really paved the way for my career. When we moved to Picayune, we would travel back and forward to New Orleans just to work with him and be a part of his

choir.” Besides Jones, Hale-McGill attributes her early singing career to a few of the greats including Aretha Franklin, Shirley Caesar, and Dorothy Norwood. “I would listen to their songs, and try to emulate them,” she said. “They were a few of the artists that impacted me, as well as my mother.” As Hale-McGill’s voice continued to grow, she started singing with her mother throughout the region. It did not take very long for her to find her own uniqueness. Soon she was writing her own music and making a name for herself in the world of gospel. With her eyes set on performing, Hale-McGill tried out for various television shows that could propel her into her future career. “I tried American Idol, The Voice, and many more,” she said. “I would always leave feeling a little discouraged, but it just wasn’t my time. So, I decided to stop participating in those contests.” Little did she know that God had other plans. While in service, Hale-McGill was approached by the Mother of the Church. She had a divine message for her, and that simple statement changed the course of her singing career. “She came up to me and told me that God told me to do one more competition,” stated Hale-McGill. “I told her that He wasn’t tell me that, and I was done with competing. I could not imagine trying it again.” Once the seed was planted in her mind, Hale-McGill’s sister in law approached her about a contest during the 2015 Essence Festival. Pondering about what the Mother of the Church said, she prayed about the situation and did her research. The contest called for a video submission, and HaleMcGill took a leap of faith. Not long after her sister in law’s suggestion, she recorded her own rendition of “Amazing Grace.” “The night that the video was due, my submission button was not working correctly,” she said. “The rules stated that it had to be submitted by midnight, and I barely made it! Thank God it worked!” Three days later, Hale-McGill received a telephone call that changed her life forever. “I made the competition of The Next Gospel Superstar and was chosen to perform live at the Essence Festival along with five other individuals. She took the Walmart stage and sang live for Gospel and business greats including Deitrick Haddon, Tamela Mann, and Phil Thorton. “It was amazing singing

in front of people that I have looked up to for so long,” said Hale-McGill. “It was even more amazing when they announced that I was the winner.” As host David Mann announced her name, Hale-McGill gave all of the glory to God. “I shouted and praised like never before.” she said. Part of winning the competition, Joanna was afforded the opportunity to record a single written and produced by Deitrick Haddon. She was also afforded the opportunity to record a jingle for the Tom Joyner Morning Show. The title of the song was called “Open Doors” which fit in perfectly with Hale-McGill’s new success. “We went into the studio and recorded the song in about two hours,” stated Hale-McGill. “It was such a great experience, because the song felt like it was specially written for me.” The song, which was written and produced by Haddon, praises God for the many blessings and open doors that He provides. For Hale-McGill, releasing this song was a pivotal moment in her singing career. It premiered on the Yolanda Adams morning show, and she has had the opportunity to sing it across the nation. As the years passed, she won several awards recognizing her talents. In 2016 she returned to the Essence stage and crowned the new winner of the Walmart Next Gospel Superstar competition. The very next year,

she was given the opportunity to minister at the Johnnie Jackson Gospel is Live event, sponsored by The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. However, Hale-McGill’s most recent accomplishment is one that was a great honor and surprise. She was awarded the 2018 Artist of the Year Award at the Gulf Coast Gospel Music Awards. “I did not think I was going to win. It was such an honor to be recognized by so many artists that have outstanding talent of their own,” stated Hale-McGill. “It is always amazing to have others in the same industry admire your work.” The future is bright for Joanna Hale McGill. She is currently working in the studio on volume two of her new music and has her sights set on new open doors, including recording a duet with her mother. “She has never been in a studio before, so I think this would be a fantastic way to have her experience that with me,” said Hale-McGill. In April of 2019 Joanna did her 1st national television premier singing “The Hymn to St. Brigid on the premier night of season 2 of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger. SPIRITUALITY: KNOWING YOUR PURPOSE

Put it in Neutral Often times, we find ourselves caught in the whirlwind that we call life. We are moving and shaking within our daily routines, and sometimes we are operating so swiftly, we don’t have an opportunity to come up for air, much less the ability to grab a huge bowl of Pad Thai to refuel our bodies and minds-just to keep our machines well-oiled. We have all been guilty of not taking the proper meditative breaks (which I firmly believe is REQUIRED alone time) with ourselves, to quiet down all of the chatter and static, and to find solace before the Lord. When we put our engines in neutral (even if it is for just a few minutes) we allow our energy, motions, as well as our emotions to idle, forcing us to come to an all-stop. This is so important to take the time to do several times a day to ensure proper focus and balance. This is why: In the solitude of our minds, we can hear our “spiritual voice” which comes from our Creator. He has the ability to properly and promptly gain our attention when we are “being still and knowing he is God”. A sheep will always know his shepherd’s voice, and when we recognize that is Him speaking, it automatically opens up the lines of communication, which in essence, is also known as prayer. The most important instructions, directives, messages, clues, and hints for our calling in life to be fulfilled is based upon these conversations we have with God.

When we petition Him, (or call upon) we should keep in mind some important points: He loves us and wants to hear from His creations. He is always listening to our pleas and contents of our hearts. We prove our faith in Him by calling upon His name. When we call, He answers, so let’s always make a conscious effort to be still enough to hear his response so we can be sure that we have clarity and confidence in our actions we put behind these directives. We NEVER want to find ourselves too busy, distracted, or consumed by life’s situations and circumstances to miss the content of our Heavenly Father’s message to us, for us! We always want to be in line with His word, which is His will and way. Just like any relationship that thrives, it is based on communication, respect, and love. By opening the lines of communication with Him, these attributes are acknowledged and displayed by us going to Him, and by His responses back to us. We should cherish our “conversations with God”, for it is where His peace, grace, and mercy pours out onto His children. So, I encourage you to try it right now. Be still. Be quiet. Be yourself when speaking to Him. He created you in your mother’s womb! Be humble. Be bold. Be transparent. Be expectant to hear from Him!! My prayer for all of you is that His voice ALWAYS speaks the loudest and clearest in your minds, bodies, and souls!
