As a mother of two young men, I am on a persistent journey of learning to instill purpose into my children’s lives. Cherishing every moment with my boys is a constant pursuit, and I am enjoying every minute of it. However, busy schedules, the stresses of life, and unwanted interruptions are steadily trying to turn our joyful experiences upside down. As parents and leaders, it is our responsibility to overcome the stresses of life in order to embrace our time and create a balanced culture for our families. By the grace of God, I have been chosen to become a mother. This role is the biggest blessing of my life, and I have fought through many difficult times to become the nurturer I am today. There have been highs and lows; however, there has always been a constant. That constant is the love for my children. This admiration has propelled me into my purpose and lifted me up when I have fallen. The unconditional love of a mother can dry tears, heal wounds, and break down walls. This is why our culture should embrace true, unending, agape love. In order to achieve a healthy lifestyle, one must achieve balance in all areas. As parents, it is our

www.lifestyleshealthandwealth.com

responsibility to show our children the best ways to overcome obstacles. Creating tension, denying emotion, and preventing peace are some of the many ways we can deny our children the best balance in life. Sometimes, we do not even know we are creating the chaos. The first step is acknowledging our faults so that we can take the initial move toward peace. There are simple steps can be instilled in order for your family’s perspective to shift. Speaking life into your children will not only help them gain confidence, but it will also refresh your mind as a leader. Our authority as mothers, and the power of our words are like seeds. We plant them into our children’s lives to grow into their truest identity and destiny. Often times, our children grab on to our habits. Let us make sure we are being a reflection of light instead of darkness. Not only are words important, but also actions. Teaching our young men to treat women with respect is significantly missing in today’s society. As women, we must create a dynamic relationship with our sons in order for them to experience true Godly love. This love will be carried over to their own families and will break generational chains of dishonor. Men should also take the same steps towards teaching their daughters how they ought to be treated. If this dynamic relationship is started early, women will grow to experience true love in all aspects. These precious acts of kindness placed in our young men and women will empower them to become the leaders of tomorrow. For my boys, it all starts with the love of a mother and that is the spark that will ignite their future.

We’re Moving On Up! Purchasing With a Purpose It’s both exciting and stressful negotiating a real estate purchase contract. Once it’s signed by the sellers, buyers can relax a bit, but ZMD Realty llc can’t. There are still more negotiations, document deliveries, inspections, title details and mortgage tasks to be accomplished to reach a successful closing and walk away with the keys to your new real estate property. There are a number of companies and people involved in a real estate transaction, including attorneys, surveyors, appraiser, title company, mortgage broker, lender, loan underwriter, both agents, and possibly others. Each has specific duties and requirements, and each is concentrating on doing a good job for you. However, their focus is narrow, targeted on their specific niche in the deal. As your buyer agent, we’re your “go-to” resource to bring it all together. We’re here to coordinate the activities of all of these companies and people for you.

Planning for a healthy lifestyle

Mothers of Purpose The Lifestyles team would like to honor some of our very own mothers of purpose. As women, we were chosen to birth not only our children into existence, but also our hopes and dreams of a better future. Nicole Justice, the publisher of Lifestyles Health and Wealth magazine, is the magnificent mother of two boys, Conner and Cole. She showcases her innovative and creative qualities by raising up her two children into the pursuit of healthy lifestyles. Also, she created Lifestyles Health and Wealth magazine to instill the purpose of a balanced life into the hearts of readers. Without her positive thoughts behind this publication, our writers and contributors would not have their voices heard across this great state. Our team is extremely grateful for her passion and guidance throughout the Lifestyles journey. Our next mothers are both coincidentally named Stephanie; however, the meaning of their name is definitely not a mistake. The name Stephanie means “crowned” and these two mothers are queens in their own rights. Stephanie Collins is the mother of Lifestyles designer, Dawn Folse, and Stephanie Carter is the mother of Lifestyles writer, Chrissy Cifuentes. Both women shattered family strong holds and broke generational bonds. Each allowed God’s favor to rain down on their own families in a plethora of extraordinary ways. Stephanie Collins was abandoned by her mother and never had a true example of unconditional, motherly love. Not until she met her husband did the true meaning of family enter her mind and settle in her spirit. According to Collins, her mother-in-law became the mother she never had. The goodness she experienced while joining to her husband’s family gave her the example she needed as a matriarch. Due to this union, Collins experienced the

love that God intends for us to have for our families. Years passed, and she then had children of her own. Collins cheerfully passed down traditions of arts, culture, and much more into her children. She is now a proud grandmother and seeks to instill the same values of love and acceptance into the lives of her grandchildren. Stephanie Carter was the youngest of all girls. Unfortunately, her father passed away before she was born, and she never knew the protective love of a biological father. Although she lacked a paternal presence in her life, her mother taught her to know her heavenly Father above all else. Throughout her life, she was confronted by many trials and tribulations, but she was supernaturally protected. She may not have had an earthly father present, but according to Stephanie, she was always in God’s hands. As she grew, so did her spiritual life. She married and had two daughters of her own. Not only did Stephanie instill the same Godly values that she was taught into her daughters, but she also gave them the protection every child needs and deserves. She broke the generational curse of loneliness and became a friend to not only her earthly daughters, but also to those who needed the love and protection of a spiritual mother. These women of purpose are only a few of the many that were called to make a difference in this world as a mother. By learning from their mistakes, gaining wisdom from their counsel, and embracing the sweetness of their lives, we can train up our younger generation to follow in their footsteps. Creating a lifestyle of birthing purpose is a monumental part of Lifestyles Health and Wealth magazine, and we will continue to seek the meaning behind every story of motherhood.

pursuit of business

Cultivating a Confident Business Strategy Starting a business is a daunting task. You know what you want to accomplish. But, defining it and implementing steps to reach your goal can be difficult. Meeting with clients is one aspect of my job that I enjoy immensely. Learning about a new concept or industry energizes my soul. Very often, I find that many of my clients can articulately describe their business but neglect a clear strategy and vision to define themselves. The following are tried and true methods for cultivating a confident business strategy you can count on.

by Cara Herrin

3. LISTEN. It is important to know your business. But, it can be even more important to see how others view your business. At times, I find owners are so close to their business that they neglect to discover how others perceive it. Ask questions. Surveying current clients can help define areas of strength as well as provide you with recommendations on improvements. This will streamline the business. Make changes where necessary and determine if they align with the values established in Step 1.

1. DEFINE WHO YOU ARE. As the business owner, you are the business. Make a note of your core values. Then, make those core values highly visible and stick to them. Clearly list your innate gifts, the areas of your business you enjoy, and where you excel. Likewise, list your weak areas, and those you find uncomfortable or that don’t come naturally. Using this information, you can accurately assess your position and fill in those areas where you need support with valuable team members who compliment your assets. Do not waste time or energy with specific matters that drain your talent and energy.

2. SET GOALS FOR YOUR BUSINESS. I recommend setting up 6-month, 12-month, 2-year and 5-year goals. Let your mind soar in the realm of possibilities, including those from simplistic to extravagant. Then prioritize those goals within each time frame. Refer to that list weekly and move forward. www.lifestyleshealthandwealth.com

4. REPEAT. Consistently reflect on the above steps. Ensure that you stay on track with your goals and values. You may find that your business model moves in a different direction. However, being successful requires agility, pragmatism, and the ability to navigate hurdles. A confident business strategy develops when you know who you are, rely on your innate skills, and surround yourself those who compliment your abilities. Finally, make sure that you enjoy what you do. Isn’t that why you started your own business? If not, refer to step one and begin again. It’s never too late.

A Bril iant Diamond Duo by Chrissy Cifuentes Everyone knows that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but according to Kevin and Elizabeth Brown, this friendship shouldn’t end with just the diamonds. “We have great relationships with our customers,” said Kevin Brown. “It is so exciting to be such a big part of our customers’ lives even after the engagement.” This married, diamond duo own and operate “Brilliance in Diamonds – the Engagement Specialists” in Metairie, and their ultimate purpose is to bring both unique jewelry and memories to their clients. Kevin Brown’s journey with diamonds started as a quest to see customers receive quality jewelry for an incredible price. “While in the diamond business, I noticed that many of the big retailers weren’t providing quality items at a reasonable price,” he said. “I knew that this should be different, so I decided to give customers what they deserve which is high quality jewelry at a great price along with a personal feel.” In 2012, Kevin established “Brilliance in Diamonds” and the rest was history. “I instantly knew that this was my path,” he said. “I want to see people receive exactly what they want and that each person deserves to be an intricate part of the design process.” As his business continued to escalate, so did Kevin’s romantic relationship with Elizabeth. Both shared a common passion for people, and it did not take very long for Elizabeth to become an intricate part of the business. “It was a big year in 2016,” said Elizabeth. “I decided to leave my job as a child’s advocate at Children’s Hospital in order to jump on board with him. It was a wonderful decision because we quickly found out that we made a great team.” According to Kevin, Elizabeth brought a whole new spark to the diamond business. Her contagious personality and tech-savvy style made her an asset in various ways. “She is in charge of our social media and is a vital part of the sales process,” he said.

www.lifestyleshealthandwealth.com

“We both have different talents that we bring to the table.” Many question how this couple maintains their positive relationship as married business partners, but the Browns believe that the key is respect. “We respect each other’s strengths and that is what makes it work so well,” said Elizabeth. “Of course there are bumps in the road, but we overcome them by listening to each other and communicating.” Kevin and Elizabeth also attribute their successes to putting the customers first. Not only do they work tirelessly to see the client’s dreams come to life, but also they constantly communicate with their clients in order to create a personal touch that many cannot replicate. “Kevin is always texting the customers about their designs and other ideas to guide them in the process,” stated Elizabeth. “It is important for us to know that we have done everything possible for them to be a part of the special moments of receiving their piece.” Even though the Browns consider themselves engagement specialists, they also have extensive experience and expertise in all types of fine jewelry. Whether it is women’s necklaces or men’s watches, the pair can turn jewelry dreams into a reality. “We literally can do it all,” said Kevin. “Our prices are second to none, and it is our goal to see the customer happy with their new creations. Each piece is one of a kind; just like them.”

Posse with a Purpose

By Chrissy Cifuentes The River Parishes are well-known for their delicious Cajun cuisine, lush sugar cane fields and mysterious swamps. However, there is one undeniable trait that also speaks volumes about these communities and their residents. This trait is unshakable strength. Tanya Roccaforte, the founder of the nonprofit Perry’s Posse, knows just how strong the communities of the River Parishes are due to an out pouring of support for her organization. “We have so many people who are generous and help us raise money,” she said. “Perry’s Posse would not be the same without the love of our friends and family who donate their time and effort.” Perry Posse was created when Roccaforte’s God-son, Perry Levet, lost his battle with leukemia in 2014. Levet was a prominent person within St. John Parish and was well-known for his infectious personality and intense love of music. He was an avid Billy Joel fan and whenever there was an opportunity to play music, sing a song or put a smile on someone’s face, Levet would seize it. Larry and JoAnn Levet, Perry Levet’s parents, are proud to keep their son’s legacy alive by sharing his story with others battling similar situations. “There are no words to really describe my son,” said Larry Levet. “He loved people, he was a great musician and coach, and he was so talented.” According to founder Tanya Roccaforte, Levet had one request before his passing. His final wish was for his dear family and friends to continue to assist cancer patients in need of encouragement and support. “He wanted to see everyone with cancer be cared for. We started this organization so that we could honor his last wishes and change lives,” said Roccaforte.

14

Health & Wealth

It did not take very long for the posse to discover their purpose. After Levet’s passing, family, friends, cancer survivors and many others who have been touched by the horrors of cancer gathered together to start raising awareness. Various fundraisers and garage sales were orchestrated in Levet’s honor. One-hundred percent of the money collected goes straight to cancer patients within the River Parishes and beyond. “No one takes a cut from what is raised. Everything goes straight to who we are helping. We have no CEO, and we are in it together to see lives change,” said Roccaforte. Local businesses, corporations and a variety of chemical plants throughout the River Parishes also have been led to be a part of this cancer fighting posse. It is with the help of volunteers and these donators that the group can continue to wRoccaforte. “We have met so many people who want to get involved. We even met people on cruise ships that wanted to contribute to our cause. It truly is divine connections!”

“Perry fought to the very end, and we want these patients to have that same spirit to carry them through.” Each patient on the groups’ list receives a package that is geared to uplift and encourage in times of despair. Group members place a handout explaining the organization in the package as well as a frog pin. The frog represents being completely reliant on God’s grace in troubled situations. F.R.O.G stands for “Fully Rely On God,” and every member sports a pink shirt with their fun-loving mascot on the back. “When people see our shirts, they always ask why our frog is playing the piano,” said LeBeoef. “That is in honor of our Perry.”

Perry’s Posses’ dream for the future is to reach more with this message of hope.

Other passionate members of the organization include Joan LeBeouef and Trudy Torres. Both ladies have been on board with Perry’s Posse from the very beginning. Each have been touched by cancer in some way throughout their lives. According to these ladies, the organization is a way to give back to their communities and stay strong for those who need encouragement. “Perry always had a smile on his face. He was in so much pain every day, but he would never let it show,” said LeBeouef. “Knowing that we can reach out to these people and show them love and support is what keeps us going. They do not even know who we are, but they know someone cares,” she said. “Right now we are working on having a meet and greet. It would amazing to interact with the patients we are helping and to see their faces.” Currently, the posse has raised over a quarter of a million dollars and have helped over 500 patients. The patients are of all ages and have various different types of cancers. Once posse members are aware of the patient’s circumstance, they send them a bag with items of emotional, spiritual and financial encouragement. “Our motto is ‘Quitting is Not an Option’,” said Roccaforte.

www.lifestyleshealthandwealth.com

Not only does the pamphlet lift the spirits of these fighters, but also a “Jesus Calling” book is provided for them to read. The devotional gives spiritual guidance during anxiety ridden moments. A “Letter to my Cancer” sheet is also neatly tucked away in the package. This inspirational message was created by Ginger Johnson to light the fire of strength inside each individual. One line in the letter states, “You see cancer, you do NOT own me. I own myself. And I will survive.” The team’s main belief is “If God wakes you with a pulse, then you have a Purpose.” This was a belief that Perry Levet walked out daily, and Perry’s Posse wants his spirit of perseverance to live on throughout the battles of current patients. A monetary donation is also provided for patients within St. John, St. Charles and St. James Parish. “Right now we are only able to give a monetary blessings only in the River Parishes,” said Roccaforte. “However, we are working on having the ability to donate money wise outside of just these parishes so that even more lives can be touched.” Perry’s Posses’ dream for the future is to reach more with this message of hope. With the assistance of more businesses and individuals donating their time and money to the cause, the group has high hopes that many more can be reached and feel the impact of Perry’s Posse. Member of the posse, Trudy Torres, recently lost her brother to an intense battle of cancer. Doctors told her brother that he only had a short time of living; however, he fought for nine years. “This organization helped my brother so much while he was sick,” she said. “I believe he overcame nine years with cancer because of this support. I am so thankful for them and that I am a part to help others who need it.”

Wake me up, when I’m CEO! By Coach Mike Wishing your work days away is a terrible way to go through your career. Life is too short to be miserable at your workplace. Even at the earliest part of my working life, pulling my lawn mower behind my bicycle in the neighborhood, I realized if I didn’t do the job correctly or carried a wrong perspective that people would never invite me back to cut their grass again. Work at that time was referral based, and today is no different. The wrong perspective will severely hurt your career and business. Whether you’re at the very beginning of your working life, midway, or near the zenith of your career, you can’t afford to focus on all the work that you did yesterday. So, it’s important to understand that companies and customers need your best NOW. If you are haphazardly going through your work day with motion but no emotion, direction, and purpose, chances are you will never arrive at your destination. Unless your father owns the company, moving up or being promoted will not be in your future. Let me share some wisdom from my 30 years plus experience with you as a leader in the workplace. If at all possible, find a mentor or mentors. You must have a trusted guide speaking into your life that has been there before you. This makes your journey to where you’re going much more obtainable. This mentor should be someone that can see your blind spots and help you overcome YOU. I challenge you to try this for 30 days and see if your life doesn’t get better. The beautiful part about having a mentor is that they can support many areas of your life, not just your career.

16

Learn to say yes. FEAR has a way of keeping you stuck. Every time I approach a leader with a new career move or even a promotion, I can see fear operating in their life. I’m sad to say many times fear won the battle. Next time you’re faced with this challenge, sit down with your mentor and discuss the pros and cons of your career opportunity. Don’t let fear rule your decisions. Reinvent yourself. What steered you to where you are will not get you where you’re going. The best sales person doesn’t always make the best sales manager. You will need new and innovative skill sets to meet the challenges that will come at you in the future. Staying status quo is not an option. There are many resources available to help expand and sharpen your skill set. Even if you just won sales person of the year, forget about that! “It’s a new year!” It takes sacrifice. Many times we see people that have arrived at the pinnacle of their career or business success only to find what they fail to see is the sacrifice, effort, and determination that went into the success of that career or business. Overnight successes are rare. I can’t recall any, so be ready for the mountains and valleys along the way. You must intentionally neglect other opportunities. Do you want to achieve your ultimate goals at the higher level of excellence? If the answer is yes, you will have to put down some unproductive things. Binge watching six hours a day of your latest TV series, or trying to manage seven fantasy football leagues is not necessary. You will never arrive at your destination with these many distractions and time wasting activities. Yes, you should have some fun, but it should be balanced. A better more productive tomorrow awaits you with your next decision, so choose wisely! Lastly, if it’s strictly about the money, chances are you will never reach your fullest potential. Money is the reason we show up for work, but if it’s the only reason, you will quickly lose interest and your work will suffer. As one of my favorite quotes from Howard Thurman states, “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself, what makes you come alive? Because what the world needs is more people ALIVE!”

Generational Warfare Waging a war on common social issues that plague today’s generation, not many individuals grasp the full extent of what struggles lie behind the screens of a cellphone for the youth today. A sour taste is left inside the mouths of those making assumptions of a generation they cannot yet comprehend. In a world smothered with edited versions of families, experiences and appearances, the pressure of adhering to the world’s calling hinders personal growth of minors today, forcing kids and teenagers to find a home within their own facade. In a way, a social media platform causes many adolescents to focus more on their image and status rather than embracing individuality and discovering an identity they were perfectly made to obtain. By remaining reliant upon admiration from their peers, this generation has fallen into a tireless trap, and many are afraid the generations-tocome are unable to climb out. Nowadays, assistance is a simple click away, meaning trouble can just as easily slip into a device.

are unrealistic because he is so immensely passionate, unknowingly overlooking reality, and focusing strictly on the goal at hand rather than the obstacles placed in his path. Naturally, as one matures, the world attempts to alter certain dreams, putting them into perspective, but with this generation, one can undeniably find backroads to achieve success that was not exactly permitted to other generations. Seeking affirmation, many children hide behind their screens to distract from their own insecurities, fabricating a sense of reality on social media, hoping to find clarity in a form of temporary happiness technology provides. Most of this generation believes everything they aspire is attainable, for every dream they’ve ever had has been fulfilled by previous generations. Generational classifications are reluctantly unavoidable; however, one should not make erroneous speculations and corner an entire body of people into a very specific category of laziness. It isn’t fair to confine the minority of hardworking youngsters in a box labeled “entitled,” when the future of the world will one day be left molding in the hands of those in the upcoming generation whose hard work is done by thinking outside the box stigmas and inside of a brain left misunderstood.

As a kid growing up in the world of technology blooming around every corner, it appears that the sky is no longer the limit. The availability and access to success seems almost impossible for one’s brain to stop considering. Thinking back to the innocent mentality a child possesses, one has no clue his dreams

Planning for a healthy lifestyle

The Challenges of Aging As we age, we come to a point where we need to make choices about our lifestyle, healthcare and personal pursuits. In today’s world, we frequently see that aging and the challenges of aging are rarely addressed in our society. Life expectancy is increasing for Americans, with the 85-and-older age group as the fastest growing segment of the population. However, despite advances in healthcare, many elderly people have chronic, incurable progressive diseases and need assistance with daily living activities. One of the greatest challenges facing us as we age is the prevention of physical disability and the extension of “active life expectancy.” Fortunately, recent studies suggest that healthy aging is achievable, with sound planning for old age. We have many outlets in popular culture to learn about the problems with each stage of life—except the problems associated with aging, death and dying. For this reason, it is important to have forums to discuss these processes. These discussions are valuable for both the elderly AND their caregivers. They include multiple topics, ranging from changes in independence to the need for hospice care and services. The first concern lies in identifying the need for activities of daily living. These activities include outside the home activities such as shopping, driving and way-finding. As aging and disease processes progress, they include bathing, dressing, housekeeping, feeding and walking. There are multiple solutions to this issue such as physical therapy or home health. Many require further evaluation by one’s physician. 18

If interventions in the home are not effective, then advanced therapies such as nursing home care may become necessary. Understanding the steps needed to determine appropriate levels of care: independent living, assisted living, or nursing home, are necessary skills for any patient or caregiver. Next, understanding the steps needed to pay for, institute or establish these interventions are equally as important. Finally, we are all subject to our own mortality. Many people ignore this important part of our lives. It is necessary to prepare and discuss our personal wishes regarding this important event for our families and ourselves. Through two decades of caring for patients, “womb to tomb,” I have developed personal knowledge to help guide patients and their families through these conversations. Although they are sometimes difficult, and our natural instinct is to avoid them, I strongly encourage patients and their families or caregivers to openly engage in these important conversations.

Financial products for the ages:

purpose then profit

Choosing the right product for your life stage

No matter where you are in your life, you likely have a lot of important financial decisions to make. As life happens, those transitions frequently impact your financial decisions, too.

20’s

In your 20s, you’re starting off in your first job and working to make ends meet, so building a financial portfolio may not be at the top of your to-do list. However, this can be a critical time for setting a financial foundation for the rest of your life. A top priority should be building an emergency savings account to help you get through an unexpected loss of a job or a large or unexpected financial obligation. Consider looking into disability income insurance to make sure your income and savings are both protected if you were ever unable to work due to a long-term illness or injury.

30’s

Your 30’s are a prime time to continue building a solid financial future. Hopefully, you’re comfortable in your career, and perhaps you have gotten married and may have started a family. This is when your financial options start to open up, and you may want to start thinking about life insurance to offer protection for your family’s future against an unexpected death and loss of income.

by Mark B Kingsbery, FIC

40’s

By their 40’s, many people have teenage children, are tackling new challenges and opportunities in their professional lives and have established a level of income they can rely on comfortably. You can start to work with your child to investigate the various options to help pay for post-secondary education. This also might be a time to start considering additional life insurance, as your assets and need for protection have grown as you’ve prospered both personally and professionally.

50’s

Your 50’s are an exciting time in your financial life. Your children have probably left the nest and retirement is just around the corner. You should think about establishing a floor of guaranteed income, possibly by purchasing an annuity or a similar insurance product, to help you meet your essential expenses that will continue into your retirement. This is the time to start considering how you want to live in retirement and beyond.

60’s

In your 60’s, your retirement has probably arrived or is right around the corner. This is where managing assets, investments and financial strategies become especially critical. Even at this stage of life, it is important for you to have some of your financial assets in an investment portfolio that’s carefully managed for growth consistent with your risk profile. Meeting regularly with your financial representative at this life stage will help you stay on track with your financial goals.

No financial journey will look the same. We all have different needs and goals at different stages of our lives. However, with a solid financial program in place and support from a financial professional, you can be prepared to make a lifetime of wise financial choices. continuity of healthy Living

By Laura Cottingim

A Peaceful Goodbye

It was the winter of 2006, the day after Christmas. I sat beside my husband, lying in his hospital bed set up in our bedroom. It was a good day. He was alert and engaging. The room was peaceful and warm, candles burned on the mantle and the sun casted rays through the window. We spoke about many things that afternoon. At one point I said to him “when you get to where you’re going will you send me a message”. He agreed, and we decided together what that message would be. He let go of life January 2, 2007. The week following was busy with family, friends, phone calls, and final funeral plans. The day of his funeral came, and it was beautiful. Afterwards, a gathering of close friends and family that came to the house slowly dwindled. For the first time since he died I was alone. It was that moment the message we agreed upon came. I was frightened. I fell to my knees asking God for forgiveness for having tested my faith. Then I felt an enormous sense of joy realizing that our spirits do transcend, and they can communicate with us. I lost my fear of dying. It had been validated, our spirit is eternal.

I received a calling after that day, to help people embrace the end of life experience and provide comfort and support to the dying and their loved ones in the final weeks and days. I later learned the term for this was End of Life Doula. An End of Life Doula is a companion to the dying, helping them and their families connect with the spiritual aspects of the dying process. A Doula engages in the relationship of the dying person, seeing them beyond their illness, getting to know them however it unfolds, being present, available and allowing the person to be who they are.

Focusing on the rite of passage and preparing the individual and their loved ones for the transition from the physical to the spiritual world can and should be a sacred, peaceful, uplifting experience for everyone involved. End-of-Life is inevitable. A Doula is there to provide holistic support for the dying on their journey home and for their loved ones before, during, and after death by ensuring the experience is as positive as possible.

arts + culture

An Artistic Family Affair By Chrissy Cifuentes For Stephanie Collins and her two daughters Dawn Folse and Torri Cannon, expressing their artistic sides are much more than an occasional hobby. It is a time of self-expression, renewal, and family bonding. Stephanie Collins, started embracing her artistic side at a very young age, and her curious daughters quickly took notice. “I can remember being a little girl watching my mom paint,” said Dawn Folse. “As long as I can remember, she would be creating and that propelled me into wanting to do art for myself.” As children, the girls would gather around their mother and watch in awe as she finished projects with ease. “She would always help us with anything artsy in school. It would be such a breeze for her,” stated Torri Cannon. “I thought it was normal for everyone’s mother to be an artist!” This dynamic mother-daughter trio certainly has a talent for bringing the Louisiana coastal culture to life. Fish, crabs, and pelicans are just some of the many creatures displayed on their works. Each member of the bunch has their own unique style. Some pieces are realistic while others have a cartoonish feel. Many canvases are covered with bright colors while others are more subdued. “You can tell we both learned from our mother, but we each have our own way of expressing ourselves,” said Dawn. “It is a family affair, and we always try to make time to come together and paint.”

we use as canvas is natural, and we gather it ourselves,” said Dawn. “Whether it is driftwood or cypress knees, we make use of it!” Both sisters proclaim that the most interesting pieces of art from their mother is her cypress knee Santa Clauses. The festive Saint Nicks all derive from the famous Louisiana tree stumps, and most of the time, they are straight from her own backyard. “There is a very interesting technique to creating the cypress Santa,” said mother of the clan, Stephanie Collins. “You can’t just pick out a stump and start painting. There is a process you have to follow.” Collins’ imagination takes flight every time she sees a new fresh knee to paint. “She can just look at a cypress knee and already have the face imagined,” said Torri. “She has everything already placed in her mind before she starts painting.” Things have certainly changed since the beginning of 40 Oysters. Schedules are busier and the daughters of the family have tasks of their own; however, there is a constant agreement. Time needs to be made for creation and family memories. “When we get together, it is our time to catch up with each other,” said Dawn. “We make those moments our own. We need it.” For the matriarch of the family, Stephanie Collins, the time spent together is priceless. “I will always love doing my art for myself, but there is nothing like being with my daughters and watching them express themselves in their own way,” she said. “I can teach them my way, but their personalities shine perfectly within their own works of art.”

As the sisters grew, their interest in the arts continually increased. Soon, the ladies utilized their talents not only for fun, but also for business. They titled their art business 40 Oysters, and the reason behind its name is truly keeping family tradition alive. “Our grandmother would make her delicious gumbo for us, and we would always ask her how she did it,” said Dawn. “One day she told us that she uses exactly 40 oysters and then it clicked. It was perfect name to describe our art. Also, we chose that name to honor her.” The ladies travel to various craft fairs across southeast, Louisiana in order to sell and display their coastal themed creations. According to them, the only materials which are purchased are the paints. “Mostly everything

Inspections have become a stumbling block to the real estate transaction. The seller is selling the house “as is”, and he is not interested in doing any repairs. Quite frankly, they think the house is nearly perfect. The buyer wants the house they buy to be perfect, and they have an eagle eye that hones in on the slightest imperfection. They are very nervous and skittish. Especially, first time home buyers. This feeling is understandable due to the fact that the purchase of a home represents probably the largest financial transaction that they will make in their lives. With that said, you must be realistic. No home is ever going to be perfect. Not even a new construction will meet a perfect expectation. Before putting in an offer on a house, remember you are making the offer based on the property’s apparent current condition. For example, if you can see that there are broken windows, then that is not something you should ask for during inspections. This is something you could easily see with the naked eye. You should take that into consideration when negotiating the purchase price. However, if after the video pipe inspection you find out there are broken pipes under the slab then that is something that you never would have seen with the naked eye. That would be a legit problem to ask that it be repaired.

Let’s look at the inspection process: First, be sure to read the purchase agreement before you sign. The “Inspection and Due Diligence Period” includes more than just the actual inspections. This period is also the time that you need to verify school districts, homeowner’s and flood insurance quotes, get an elevation certificate, verify zoning, check the sex offender lists, crime stats, verification of square footage, and to review subdivision restrictive covenants.

issues, they may recommend additional inspections or testing. All of the inspections must be non- damaging to the home. One last note, the fact that a functioning major component may be at the end of its useful life does not become something that must be replaced with a brand new component. This may be the time to explore a home warranty. If you really think about it, everything in the house is going to wear out at some point.

Welcome to home ownership! Now, a word to the seller. You need to be realistic. If a major problem is discovered, it’s in your best interest to try and work with the current buyers that want your house. You are going to have to disclose the new found defect to any new buyers, and the process will start all over again. You want to sell your house, and you have a buyer that wants to buy your house, so now it is time to remain calm. Knowing all of this, do you really want to go through this whole home buying process without a licensed real estate agent on your side? The best news is a buyer’s agent is FREE to the buyer. The seller has already agreed to pay the buyer’s agent when they signed the listing agreement. The Garsaud Group of Keller Williams is a mother/ daughter team. Lisa Garsaud has over 14 years of experience helping buyers, sellers, investors and builders. Courtney Garsaud Olivia is the Director of Operations, and she will make sure all of your transactions go smoothly. Our clients get the benefit of two full time licensed Realtors®.

The buyer hires and pays for all inspections, you want to have inspectors that work for you, not the seller. Now, we get to the actual inspections. They are best done by professionals specifically licensed in their field of expertise. The home inspector does the overall general inspection of the house, and the pest inspector checks for wood destroying insects. The plumbing inspector runs a video camera through the sewer lines under the slab to check and see if there are any breaks in the pipes. The HVAC inspector does a through check of the A/C and heating system. If the home inspector finds any

We Dat’s Feeding a Purpose by Chrissy Cifuentes The owner of “We Dat’s Chicken and Shrimp”, Greg Tillery, grew up with huge dreams of making an impact in his city of New Orleans. He is now an accomplished restaurant owner and continues to move forward with new, exciting aspirations of success. “I worked very hard to make this dream become a reality,” said Tillery. “And it all started with a food truck.” Tillery is a native of New Orleans and a graduate from Edna Carr high school. As long as he can remember, he always had a dream of owning his own business. That vision manifested when he started “We Dat’s Chicken and Shrimp”, and the rest was deep-fried history. “I bought my first food truck, and I knew that it would take off,” said Tillery. “People were loving the food and the flavors, so I knew it was time to find a permanent location.” The location that started it all is 1407 Canal Street in New Orleans. “I knew that I wanted a restaurant that people could come to enjoy the food. That is the difference between a food truck and a sit down restaurant. People can either take their order or sit down and enjoy the atmosphere.” Not only was obtaining the new location a history making move for the business, but it also made New Orleans history. “We Dat Chicken and Shrimp” is the first black owned local business to be located on Canal Street.

“It is such an honor to say that I am the first black owned restaurant on Canal,” said Tillery. “It is such a powerful accomplishment for me and so many others.” According to Tillery, his success is attributed to dedication, encouragement from family and friends, and guidance of God. Without these things, his restaurant would not be the New Orleans staple that is today. “I can remember asking God to open doors, and He did it for us. In my times of struggles, there would always be someone there who believed in our vision and that is why we are where we are today.” With a restaurant on Canal and another in Old Gentilly, Tillery is excited to be launching a store on the West Bank. “We are opening up another location for people all across the city to experience our flavorful dishes.”

Like all great chefs, Tillery has an impacting story behind his cooking. It all started by watching his mother. “I would watch my mother in the kitchen, and I believe that it is what inspired me to start cooking,” stated Tillery. “I did not go to culinary school. Everything I learned, I really learned from her.” Tillery mentioned that his wings are the biggest hit on his menu, and to him, it’s hard not to cheer someone up with a plate of hot wings. “I chose wings as my signature because it is universal food. Everyone loves fried wings, and there is just something so comforting about them,” he said. “Personally, when I am having a bad day, some good fried chicken wings lift my spirits.”

Sarunas Jackson Film Actor

Owning multiple “We Dat’s Chicken and Shrimp” locations is a plate full; however, Tillery is not finished spreading the flavor across the state. “We wanted to give everyone the opportunity to taste our food, so that’s why we created our seasoning,” he said. According to Tillery, the We Dat’s seasoning is a perfect way for at home chefs to taste a piece of his flavor. “You can go online and order the seasoning, or find it in multiple groceries throughout the state.” Whether it is frying up chicken, hosting local celebrities, mingling with patrons or posting on social media, Tillery knows how to capture the flavor of New Orleans.

He encourages those in his great city to chase their dreams, because everything is possible with God, hard work, and the love of others. “If I can do it, anyone can,” he said. “I am the proof that anything can happen with God.”

Turkey Giveaway for the Community We Dat’s “New Orleans Own” Chicken and Shrimp 1407 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 25

purpose then profit

by Eric Schorr For many American adults, the two most valuable assets they own are their homes and their retirement plans. In fact, according to a recent report by the Investment Company Institute, Americans currently hold over $24 trillion (that’s trillion, with a “T”) in retirement plan assets, including traditional IRA’s, Roth IRA’s, 401k’s, 403b’s, and other plans. Many people fail to understand that, unlike your home and other “probate assets,” the transmission of your retirement plan at your death is not governed by the provisions of your will, but instead by the beneficiary designation form on file with the plan administrator. While people can spend weeks or months or longer agonizing over the terms of their wills and scrutinizing the most minute details, surprisingly little thought or effort goes into planning for the distribution of their retirement plans. Most commonly with married couples, the retirement account holder or plan participant names his or her spouse as the primary beneficiary, i.e., the person who will be entitled to those assets upon the account holder’s death. Sometimes this is optimal because there are benefits and options available to the surviving spouse that are not available to other potential beneficiaries. For example, if a surviving spouse is named as the primary beneficiary of an IRA or other qualified plan, the spouse is typically allowed to “roll over” plan assets into his or her own name and treat it as his or her own IRA. No other beneficiary has this option. Every other class of beneficiary must immediately begin withdrawing funds as soon as the plan is rolled into their names. Consequently, the beneficiary must begin paying taxes on the withdrawn funds. These mandated withdrawals are called Required Minimum Distributions or “RMD’s”.

Children are often named as the contingent or remainder beneficiaries who will receive the accounts upon the death of the second parent. Unmarried IRA owners may name their children, nieces or nephews as primary beneficiaries. Unfortunately, when these valuable assets are left to children who are not yet fiscally responsible, they do not last very long. Beneficiaries often do not exercise the same restraint as the original account owner. More often than not, they cannot wait to cash-out the IRA and spend the assets – often frivolously. Sometimes the money is well-spent; however, more frequently it is not. Sometimes ex-spouses or creditors walk away with the plan assets. So, what can you do? Retirement plan owners who want their IRAs to provide security and long-term benefits for their children or grandchildren can prevent these problems by using an IRA trust. The trust is named as beneficiary of the IRA, and the owner’s children or grandchildren are named as the beneficiaries of the trust. After the account owner’s death, required distributions are made from the IRA to the trust. The required distributions are based on the life expectancy of the oldest beneficiary of the trust. If the beneficiary is young, the distributions will be low. If the RMD’s are less than the growth of the plan assets, the IRA will continue to grow despite the distributions.

The amount of the RMD is based on two factors: First, the value of the retirement account, and secondly, the life expectancy of the account holder. For younger beneficiaries, the RMD may be very small, but for older beneficiaries, the required withdrawal amount can be quite large. Realizing the tremendous benefit of tax-deferred growth (the growth of these assets is not taxed until it is withdrawn), most IRA owners try to keep IRA assets invested as long as possible. The longer the funds stay invested, the greater they will be.

26

Health & Wealth

The advantage of the IRA trust is that the distributions are controlled by the trustee and not by the beneficiary. The provisions of the trust determine when distributions can be made to the beneficiary. Although in most instances, the trustee will only withdraw the required minimum distribution, he can be permitted to withdraw more if it is appropriate and in the best interest of the beneficiary.

The four elements that must be met are:

A common arrangement is for the trustee to distribute only the minimum distributions to the beneficiary until the beneficiary reaches a certain age. When the beneficiary attains that age, the beneficiary is allowed full control of the distributions.

4. All possible beneficiaries who could enjoy the benefits of the IRA must be clearly identifiable from the trust document.

An IRA trust can stop a fiscally immature beneficiary from wasting the IRA assets, but that’s not the only advantage. The trustee or investment advisor named in trust will manage the IRA investments. That minimizes the beneficiary’s ability to squander the IRA’s value through poor investments. Also, by utilizing Louisiana’s spendthrift provisions, the trust can protect the IRA from creditors, bankruptcy, and divorce. IRS regulations provide conditions a trust must meet to qualify as a Designated Beneficiary. Failure to meet the conditions may cause accelerated distributions, or it may cause the trust to fail altogether.

1. The trust must be legally enforceable under state law. 2. The IRA custodian must have a copy of the trust agreement by the first required distribution date. 3. The trust must be irrevocable or become irrevocable upon the death of the IRA owner.

These elements are more complicated than they appear, and some standard trust language could completely disqualify the trust. So, before you name a trust as the beneficiary of an IRA or other qualified plan, be sure to seek the advice of a well-qualified estate planning attorney. Spirituality: knowing your purpose

by Gina Piazza Well, it’s fall ya’ll! That’s a phrase we love to say in the south. It is the autumn leaves of November, the scent of pumpkin candles, and coffee in the air that makes it my favorite time of year. As I write this, I am on my way to the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee for our yearly trip to see the fall leaves in all of their splendor. Soon enough, we will be in the kitchen making preparations for the special occasion we call Thanksgiving. This is traditionally celebrated with a feast! The bounty from our harvest will include everything from baked turkey, sweet potato casserole, oyster or cornbread dressing, cranberry sauce, sweet tea, and some sweet rolls. Sounds good right? While reflecting on this upcoming holiday, it made me think about the sacrifice that led to this celebration. Let me stir you with this to ponder. Have you ever had a dream or a justice cry in your spirit, but the steps involved and the stewarding of that dream was unclear? I can only imagine packing up my family, hitting the seas, coming into a strange land, braving the aliments, planting crops, building the houses, and facing famine and disease. It was not a picnic or a walk in the park, yet these men and woman fought with bravery to get to this great land. They left the comforts of home to step into something new, something untamed, and with wild abandon. It was a dangerous quest to search, seek, and find a better life. 28

Although these pioneering pilgrims may have had comforts and plenty food in their previous homes, their spirits were hungry. They were hungry for truth, liberty, righteous justice in the land, freedom to read the Bible for themselves, and to obtain a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. These pilgrims were among many spiritual revolutionaries who left earthly possessions in pursuit of a dream forged by God for freedom. They fought and sought to frame both community and governance in a way that would reflect His glory and freedom for the nations. Much personal sacrifice was involved. For them, it was worth it. They understood what it was like to not be able to provide for their families and have their rights taken away. Most of all, they knew the pain of being forbidden to read the word of God and praise Him freely. If they did, they were considered a heretic. In America, we see the fruits of the foundation made by the pilgrims. Were all the sacrifices worth it? I believe so. Personally, I am thankful for those who came seeking something more and for their bravery. Perhaps, for a moment, you will experience the true freedom that Thanksgiving symbolizes. This can be achieved by giving yourself to a God sized dream. Just maybe in the future, you will unlock the potential to shift society into heaven’s pattern and redefine our world.

When we were kids, most of us never thought about how easy it was to move. We just ran, jumped, hopped, skipped, and bulldozed our way through playing and life! But, life and time can show us that our bodies are deteriorating and need maintenance to stay at their best. As discussed in my last article about the Perfect Storm of Fitness, strength training is necessary for our optimum physical health. Many people struggle with doing strength training even when they have never suffered any kind of injury or accident to their body. STRENGTH TRAINING IS A KEY COMPONENT IN MAKING OUR BODIES OPERATE TO THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL FOR OUR LIFETIMES!

Learning to strengthen the muscles around the compromised areas is a critical component to the FULL recovery of the specific area that has been compromised. Let’s say you’ve had a knee replacement. It is important that the muscles in the front of the thigh (quadriceps) and the muscles in the back of the thigh (hamstrings) are strengthened to help support the new knee mechanism. Not embracing this after physical therapy usually boils down to people being uneducated, uninformed, or too “afraid” to enter a gym environment if they have never been to a gym.

If you’ve been injured or had surgery on a particular joint or area of your body, strength training has just quadrupled in importance. There is about a 99.9% chance that you will be sent to physical therapy as part of your recovery. In this arena, you are taught by experts how to enhance and improve the chances of complete healing through various movements and exercises. Generally, you are in this arena of recovery for six weeks or more. Of course, this time span depends on the initial cause and effect of your body’s breakdown in that area. What about AFTER physical therapy? This is where continued strength training exercises are so important. Remember, our bodies were made to M.O.V.E. It has been my observation that more than 50% of people who go through physical therapy DON’T do anything after that program. YOU must empower yourself to move into your full recovery! This amazing machine that God made called our “BODY” has the ability to restore and rejuvenate itself when we give it the right stimuli. MAKE YOUR MOVE TO BE EMPOWERED FOR A FULL RECOVERY! 29

Have you ever had a broken heart? Emotionally, you are destroyed. The person you are in love with has turned away from you, and you feel empty. Physically your chest hurts, you have palpitations, and you may even have shortness of breath. Spiritually, you are down to the point that you have no desire to do anything. You feel lonely and desperate. As a cardiologist, I was recently called to the hospital’s emergency room to examine a patient with severe chest pains. She was 84 years old and was going through the early stages of dementia. She was extremely frustrated that she couldn’t remember things. It was a struggle for her to answer my questions. I could see that her face was in extreme anguish. On top of things, she was in the middle of a heart attack and was depressed. Our lives have been structured in a way that we have a body, a soul that expresses our emotions, feelings, and a will. We are a living spirit, that like our body and soul, needs to be fed and nourished. In order for our lives to thrive, our emotions, body, and spirit need to be in perfect balance. Our emotions impact our bodies. An unbalanced body may impact our spirit. If there is no attempt to regain the “balance”, we get sick. How can we end up with a broken heart? An extremely stressful event can have a major impact in our hearts. After Hurricane Katrina, many people were displaced out of New Orleans. Some lost family members while others were struggled with their uncertainties. Some experienced job loss, financial crises, destroyed homes, family and friend separation, and more. The tension, stress, and anguish of the whole situation led some to loneliness, hopelessness, and depression. These circumstances of extreme emotional stress can lead to divorce, betrayal, romantic rejection, or unexpected news like a new

physical diagnosis or loss of a job. Our bodies react liberating large amounts of hormones like adrenaline which may constrict the blood vessels that feed our heart muscle and damage or “stun” the heart. Also, we may experience severe chest pains which mimic a heart attack. Recently, I took the patient from the ER to the cardiac cath lab. I performed an angiogram and to my surprise, her coronary vessels were normal. All evidence was pointing to a heart attack; however, there was no blockage. Unfortunately, her heart muscle had been damaged. It was very weak. Jesus sweat drops of blood from his head. The extreme anguish of going to the cross and being separated from His Father was the most difficult task he ever faced. The soldiers pierced His chest and water and blood poured out of his side. He had a broken heart. He became the perfect sacrifice for us to be redeemed from our sins and to obtain access to our Heavenly Father. My patient recovered really well. I had a long discussion with her family in how to help her with her emotional and stressful life. Our goal is to live balanced lives. We all face difficult and challenging situations on a daily basis. We tend to overbook our schedules and stretch our budgets. A key factor in life is simple: SIMPLIFY. Circumstances may not change, but our approach to them may make the difference. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. “ Phil. 4:6. Gratefulness is the key that opens our lives to experience healing, hope and peace. “And the peace of God will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:7.

Body, soul and spirit, in perfect balance leads to a healthy and prosperous life. This is the balanced life. Health & Wealth
