Publishing with Purpose A note from the Publisher ˜ Nicole Justice As 2018 closes and a new year is set before us, we must ask ourselves some important questions that will steer us into our purpose for 2019. Many make vision boards and write down their goals in order to become motivated for their best lives possible. Both of these are fantastic tools that are meant to encourage, lead, and guide us on the correct paths; however, it is up to us to take-action. In order for us to uncover the plans for our lives in 2019, we must reset our minds, bodies, and spirits by making the best decisions that benefit our futures. For me, this year has been one of growth both personally and professionally. Plans were mapped out and new passions were ignited. I made a new family with my Lifestyles Health and Wealth team, and I learned so much about who I am and the destiny set before me. Although things did not always go as planned from my perspective, I know that God was using all of my experiences for rebirth and renewal. Through it all, my family and I came back stronger than ever before. I have had the intense blessing of cultivating a stronger relationship with my two sons, embarking on new adventures while running, and meeting countless professionals across this great state. These are just a few of the many occurrences that shaped my viewpoints into what they are today. Without the trials and tribulations, I would not be in this prestigious leadership position. But, I had to make my mind up to chase the dreams that God placed within my heart. It all comes with one decision which is to set my mind on the positive and run towards my purpose. When confusion comes knocking at my door, I find myself in the perfect position to run. Running is my way of leaving all of the mess behind to find clarity in my situation. While my body propels itself into action, my spirit follows suit. Ideas start igniting and creativity is sparked. Creation paints a glorious picture in the skies

across the lake, and I am mesmerized by God’s handiwork. It causes my soul to be still, to reflect on my blessings, and it gives me the strength to endure to the end. My advice to you is to find your creative spark and allow it to move you into your next steps. Just like my passion for running connects me to my inner self, we all have a desire within us that will guide us into our destined paths.

Purchasing With a Purpose
IT’S BOTH EXCITING AND STRESSFUL NEGOTIATING A REAL ESTATE PURCHASE CONTRACT. Once it’s signed by the sellers, buyers can relax a bit, but ZMD Realty, LLC can’t. There are still more negotiations, document deliveries, inspections, title details and mortgage tasks to be accomplished to reach a successful closing and walk away with the keys to your new real estate property. There are a number of companies and people involved in a real estate transaction, including attorneys, surveyors, appraiser, title company, mortgage broker, lender, loan underwriter, both agents, and possibly others. Each has specific duties and requirements, and each is concentrating on doing a good job for you. However, their focus is narrow, targeted on their specific niche in the deal. As your realtor, we’re your “go-to” resource to bring it all together. We’re here to coordinate the activities of all of these companies and people for you.

The Lifestyles’ team sought to empower readers with compelling stories about family, relationships, triumph over obstacles and much more. Louisiana businesses had opportunities to share their stories of purpose to not only flourish their companies, but also to educate and instruct readers on all things health and wellness. Now that this eventful year has come to a close, Lifestyles Health and Wealth seeks to showcase their first Live and Learn event as well as share exciting news about the future. The first annual Live and Learn event took place on December 1 at Abita Springs RV Resort. Healthcare professionals, assistant living facilities, financial advisors and more were present in order to inform visitors about creating a balanced way of living. Publisher, Nicole Justice, hosted a seminar where vendors, sponsors and affiliates took the floor. Each had the spotlight to share their wisdom on topics such as preparing for uncertain events, overcoming stressful situations, and maintaining a healthy way of living. Attendees of all ages left with new found knowledge that was meant to encourage, uplift and inspire. Lifestyles’ previous cover story, Perry’s Posse, was also on the scene. The ladies traveled to the expo to promote their non-profit foundation, educate individuals on their purpose, and represent their issue of Lifestyles Health and Wealth. There was delicious food, non-stop action, community connection and numerous opportunities for vendors to share their purpose on multi platforms. The Lifestyles’ digital team made their way around the expo conducting interviews with each representative in order to take the Live and Learn event to social media. These short videos are geared to spread information on the world-wide web and fuel purpose into viewers. Just days after the event, the Lifestyles Health and Wealth creative team met at St. Ann Wine Bar in Mandeville. Their meeting took place in the “Harvest Room” which was a perfect setting for birthing new ideas. Vision boards cascaded the room in order to provide a creative outlet for 2019. The ladies enjoyed fellowship, outstanding food, delicious beverages provided by St. Ann and much more. This meeting set a tone for a new year of story-telling in Lifestyles Health and Wealth. Events were planned, themes were explored and prayers were answered as the team worked diligently to provide new content which will inspire readers to come.

PLANNING FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
New Year, New You The start of a new year is the perfect time to start fresh, which is probably why so many of us create New Year’s resolutions with the hopes of improving our lives. Creating a resolution can be a great opportunity to replace bad habits with new routines that help you grow socially, physically, emotionally, intellectually or psychologically. However, we often set resolutions that are unrealistic and difficult to maintain, leading us to eventually abandon our goals and settle back into old patterns. A recent survey shows that about 80% of people fail to stick to their New Year’s resolutions for longer than six weeks. This year, instead of setting a grand goal to completely transform your life, try setting goals to make a series of small changes. Small changes can make a large impact on our future and are oftentimes much easier to maintain. Set yourself up for success this year by following these guidelines when thinking about your New Year’s resolution: Choose a Specific, Realistic Goal. Instead of making an ambiguous goal like “losing weight” or “getting in shape,” focus on a goal that is more concrete and achievable. A goal that you can realistically set your sights on, like committing to lose 10 pounds or going for a run every day after work. Choosing a specific, more realistic goal presents the opportunity to plan exactly how to accomplish it over the course of the year. Pick Just One Resolution. Taking on too much all at once can be overwhelming. We all have bad habits that we
www.lifestyleshealthandwealth.com
want to eliminate, but establishing new behavioral patterns takes time. Instead of creating a long list of goals, focus all your efforts on one specific goal. Avoid Repeating Past Failures. If you select a resolution that you have failed to achieve in the past, spend time evaluating previous results. Ask yourself questions such as: “Which strategies were the most effective?”, “Which were the least effective?”, and “What roadblocks prevented me from achieving this goal last time?” By changing your approach, you will be more likely to see real, life-long results. Get Support from Friends and Family. We’ve all heard it a million times, but let’s face it – the buddy system actually works. Staying motivated is much more achievable when you have a solid support system. Find a friend or family member that will help hold you accountable for achieving your goals. Even better, join a group of others that shares your same goal. Remember, Change Is a Process. Bad habits do not develop overnight; they take time, just like healthy habits take time. It may take longer than you plan to achieve your goal, but keep in mind that this is not a race to the finish. Making the commitment to changing a behavior is something that you will continue to work on for the rest of your life. Take control of your health this year by taking the time to really think about your resolution. The process may seem daunting at times, but setting and achieving small goals will allow you to make positive steps towards a healthier lifestyle.

LIFESTYLE PURSUIT
Selling Your Home So you are planning on selling your home and want to get the best possible price, right? There are many things that factor into selling. The 3 major ones are: LOCATION, CONDITION and PRICE. Real estate is made up these 3 things. You cannot change the location of the property; however, you can change the condition (you must look at comparables to see if it is worth it to remodel), and you can change the price. There is a lot of information available on getting your house ready to put on the market – clean, declutter, repairs, get the gardens cleaned up, etc. That is the fun stuff! It’s the stuff HGTV is made of that keeps us all tuned in. Something that is not talked about too often is how important it is to price it right at the beginning. This is not the fun stuff, but it is necessary. It is kind of like going to the dentist. When pricing your home, you must think like a buyer, walk through your home with a buyer’s eye, and look at the comparables. Comparables are what houses similar to yours have sold for in your area in the previous 6 months.
offers and your home will sell for over the asking price. This will bring your house up to the correct price. When you over price your house, you are just helping to sell another house. According to the National Association of Realtors’ studies for the past 10 years, a house is over priced when it has been on the market for 2 weeks and one of these two things happen: 1.) You have no showings. 2.) You have a lot of showings and no offers. When a new property hits the market, it is like a new, shiny penny. You want to create a sense of urgency. The market has a very short attention span – usually about 2 weeks and then it is off to what is new on the market. As time passes and a home just sits on the market, buyers start asking – what’s wrong with that house? Why has it not sold? The buyers think the seller must be getting desperate and they can swoop in and get a great deal. When pricing your home, please put careful thought into pricing it correctly from the beginning, so that you can avoid sitting on the market and inevitably getting less for your home in the long run. The Garsaud Group of Keller Williams is a mother/ daughter team. Lisa Garsaud has over 14 years of experience helping buyers, sellers, investors & builders. Courtney Garsaud Oliva is the director of operations, she will make sure all of your transactions go smoothly. Our clients get the benefit of two full time licensed Realtors®.
It is best to price your home on the rounds. This is the way buyers search online. For example, if you price your house for $206,000, you are going to miss all the buyers that are searching for homes up to $200,000. The market ultimately determines the price. If the price is too high, the house will sit on the market. When you have to reduce the price, then the marketing time to sell your house increases 2-3 times with EACH price reduction. If you price your home a little too low, then you will get multiple

Changing Lives for Generations
PLANNING FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
By J.B. Hunt The Dore family got quite a shock when Philip collapsed at his 69th birthday dinner. No one knew that he had an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Enjoying a relaxing meal with his family in May, Philip was fortunate that an ambulance was two minutes away. The well-trained responders knew immediately that he had an AAA, and he was immediately airlifted to a hospital with experienced specialists. Thinking that the end was quickly approaching, Philip decided to tell his loved ones how much they mean to him. “He said his goodbyes to his wife,” his sister said. The doctor explained how difficult the surgery would be for a 7 centimeter-sized “balloon” in his belly. The largest blood vessel in his body could cause him to bleed to death, as it does in the majority of people who have this sudden rupture. Surgery to fix the aneurysm can be done when it is 5 centimeters or larger. Philip recovered and is doing well, but that is not the end of the story. His sister Deborah came to an AAAneurysm Outreach screening, and brought the family. “I think the biggest thing is the predisposing life factors that lead up to an aneurysm and the fact that when this happened my brother survived. I was in such shock,” she said. “His doctor told him that all of his siblings and their children need to be screened. That they have a 30% higher risk.” In this family with 11 siblings, that was important information to share. “It really
opened my eyes to the genetics of it. I didn’t know that there was a genetic factor behind it. And so, I’m feeling so much better because all I’ve ever heard was that people just drop dead from it and there’s no way to diagnose it. It’s not a prescreening test that’s part of your physical. So, I was grateful to hear about this screening and tell the rest of the family and on and on,” stated Deborah. Philip’s son, Phil, expressed his gratitude that his father’s outcome did not end in tragedy. “He was one of the lucky few who actually was able to live through it. So, because of the predisposed genetic component that is associated with this, we’re here at the screening. My Aunt Deborah found out about this great program and called up for us all to come in and get screened.” According to Phil, the latest research conducted by AAAneurysm Outreach is an outstanding accomplishment in the medical world. “I’m happy to say that everything looks great for me and it’s one less thing that I have to worry about, at least for the time being,” he said. “I’m grateful that there’s more research being done on this, and I’m sure that that research led to saving my father’s life when he had the rupture.” Philip’s sister, Celia, also got screened and received a good report. “We’ll spread the word about AAA risk factors and screenings.” This family stands in agreement that they will continue to educate others about how these screenings changed their lives for the better. According to Philip, saving lives and preventing this kind of health emergency in other families is now a part of their conversations “with anyone within earshot.”
Founded in 1999 in Louisiana, AAAneurysm Outreach is the nation’s only non-profit that provides education, free health screenings and awareness of abdominal aortic aneurysms, and provides comprehensive outreach for at-risk individuals –-typically smokers, men and women over the age of 60, those with hypertension and people with a family history of the condition.
Next free screening is Feb. 2 at University Medical Center, New Orleans www.lifestyleshealthandwealth.com

Rebirth By Chrissy Cifuentes
For
many around the world, the New Year is a time for new beginnings. Women promise to make healthier choices, while men ignite passions for their futures. For the first few months, these commitments are strong and steadfast; however, many fall short of their goals. The late-night workouts, relationship issues and financial struggles make it harder to strive for excellence, and renewal seems impossible. But for our cover story subject, change was essential for survival. Not only was he physically awakened, but also he was spiritually charged. This rebirth gave him a new life which propelled him into his Godgiven purpose. Andy “Rebirth” Pellerano is a New Orleans pastor, Gospel rap artist and street evangelist. He carries the title of devoted father, loving husband, and he seeks to instill the hope of God in every individual he meets. He is the founder of One Accord Ministries and travels across the country spreading the Gospel to those who are lost in addiction, oppression and depression. He was recently named Gospel Rap Artist of the year and was featured on television’s TBN Salsa program. His story of transformation is inspirational and is a tool to encourage those battling addiction, generational strongholds and immense bondage. In his teenage years, Pellerano was a frequent resident in New Orleans’ prisons. Although he was raised in a religious household and attended Catholic schools, God was not his top priority. “I was facing my first felony at 13 years old,” said Pellerano. “I was in gangs, mixed up in drugs, and so much more. I found my identity in the streets.” Year after year, Pellerano found himself back in the jail cells after making terribly poor decisions. Little did he know that while he was running the streets, his grandmother was running to the throne of God. “My grandmother was a saint,” stated Pellerano. “She prayed for me and even told me that she had a dream of me preaching on a platform. When she told me this, I thought it was the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. How could I preach after all of the horrible things I’ve done?”
14
Health & Wealth
According to Pellerano, his decision to change for the better did not occur over night. Every mistake and life-changing act brought him closer and closer to choosing righteousness. One particular event resonated in his mind. This experience was when his little-girl made a visit to see her father in a prison cell. “I was shackled by my feet and my hands were handcuffed while my sweet baby girl sat on my lap,” said Pellerano. “I will never forget her looking at me, and she told me that I looked stuck. That night I cried and cried, because she was right.” This event ignited a spark in Pellerano to be there for his children. He had many sleepless nights reflecting on his young daughter and older son who did not have their father in their lives due to overwhelming circumstances. When Pellerano was released, he met the love of his life, Ashlie. Unlike other women, she had a special presence. “There was something about her that was so different,” he said. “I loved her.” His admiration for Ashlie continued to grow, and she soon found out that she was pregnant with their first child together. Pellerano made a vow that it he would be the father that this child deserved. “I knew I was going to be there for this baby,” said Pellerano. “It would be different this time.” Unfortunately, addiction was still prevalent in his life. Once again, a moment of weakness led him back into prison. This time, he was facing a life changing sentence and prayers were released unlike never before. He called out to God and his prayers were miraculously answered. “Ashlie started going to church and took me with her,” he said. “God provided a way for me to enroll in White Dove Fellowship’s Civic Outreach Center. This is where God changed my life.” It was in this Civic Outreach Center that Pellerano found his purpose. His grandmother’s vision for his life became a reality, and it did not take long for him to trade in his street creds for favor with God. “I was reading the Bible, and it became a reality for me. It wasn’t just a story book anymore,” he said. “I had to go to rock bottom to get out, but thank God that I did.” After years of wishing for a rescue, Pellerano decided to take the steps to change. Just hours after being released from prison, he married the love of his
life. “I was not going to take anything for granted and mess this up. God rescued me and revealed himself to me. I had to commit my life to being faithful to Him and marrying the woman I loved.” Pellerano left the world of secular rap and replaced his vulgar lyrics with words of encouragement, love and Gospel truths. He said goodbye to the worldly connections which brought death and destruction, and he opened the door to opportunities that changed his world forever. “I surrounded myself with men of God who kept me accountable,” he said. “It is so important to have other men around you to speak life into you when you are ready to live for a greater purpose.” According to Pellerano, he was being called back into the streets from which he came. But this time, it was to bring light into the darkness. “I wanted to let them all know about what God did for me. They needed to know that their identity is not in those streets.” He and Ashlie prayed about the possibility of full-time ministry and started to hold gatherings in their home. It did not take very long for their small, intimate group meetings to out-grow their living room. Shortly after their initial meetings, One Accord Church was opened and now welcomes everyone to worship with them each Sunday. “If you want a new life, you can not take the past with you,” said Pellerano. “We just purchased our new building, and we are ready for the next step on what God has for us.”
those in leadership roles should always remember where they came from and pour into those who need guidance. “Don’t forget where you come from, and never compare yourself,” he said. “Comparison is the thief of joy. Look at what God has for you, not others.” As for those who are trying to be a better version of themselves within this new year, Pastor Rebirth leads by example. His inspiring journey of purpose has shaken the hearts of his congregations, but his one instruction is simple. Ask God who you are. “Winning starts within. You give power to what you agree with,” he said. “Agree that there is more and start to push forward with God’s purpose.”
A new church building is only one exciting aspect of the pastor’s life. He also welcomed a new baby boy into his family and is fulfilling the role of father the way that God intended. “It is time for men to step up and become great fathers and husbands,” he said. “Men can’t find their identity in the world. They have to look to God.” Ministry is a monumental aspect of his life, but marriage comes first. For those who want a renewal in their marriages, Pellerano shares that one needs to keep the spark alive. “Marriage takes work. Honor your wife or your husband. Never take them for granted. Relationship is so vital. You need to make yourself transparent.” When it comes to business and leadership, Pellerano offers his wisdom and insight to professionals throughout the New Orleans region. LEADERS, DON’T AVOID YOUR FEARS–FACE THEM! By Coach Mike
I recently was having a conversation with a leader in another industry, where they were explaining to me some lowperformance issues with a leader in one of the departments they managed. So, I asked him to give me some details around the issues. They then explained some of the persistent problems that have been occurring in this department for months. I asked them what the next step would be. My colleague told me that he intended to move this leader to another department that would be less impactful on the business. At this point, I realized my colleague was avoiding addressing the issue head-on. I immediately challenged him to confront the issue before transferring him to another department. He was a little surprised, but I explained further. I said there’s no way to avoid confronting this problem head-on. If you don’t choose to do it now, and you move this employee to another department, there’s a real chance the problem will follow this leader. You will have this conversation at a later time after much pain, grief and suffering. So, my colleague agreed and let me lead him through a few practical steps that are simple when dealing with a situation like this. 1) Prepare your notes and schedule a meeting time with the leader in question. It’s important to have some light conversation before diving into the problem. If you have an HR department, always contact them for their support.
You should make some general notes about what you’re saying and bring them back to the topic of the meeting today. Remind them that you can reschedule another time with them to deal with other issues, but today you are addressing the problem before us. Now is the time to present them with a personal improvement plan or some action plan with a specific time frame for things to be accomplished and check in times. The action plan should be completed before you meet with them. Lastly, make sure they understand that this problem rest solely on their shoulders although you’re here to support them they own it, and they are responsible for correcting their behavior. If this person wants to stay with your company, you should see an immediate change in their work behavior and their ability to lead with passion, desire, and effort. If at the end of the first scheduled check-up meeting you see no improvement, re-confirm the guidelines on the plan and remind them of your second meeting. If no improvement has happened by the second meeting, obviously it’s time for the human resource department to be heavily involved in steps to remove the team member. Believe me, this is a better course of action than moving this person to another department. Follow up with your human resource department for support on this process.
2) Always invite another manager/leader to join you. Never meet with the opposite sex alone. 3) Thank them for any recent accomplishments or point out areas they are achieving their goals in, before diving into the problem. Spend 2 or 3 minutes only on this. 4) Let them know why you are meeting with them today. 5) Professionally and directly cover the areas that need to be corrected. Have examples, paperwork, testimonies or anything else to make your point. 6) Ask them to paraphrase what they heard you say. They should be able to repeat what you said and what is expected from them going forward. CAUTION: If the leader begins to get defensive, change the subject or talk about issues unrelated to why they are sitting down with you today. This is called side bars.

CULTURE WITH PURPOSE
opened on Nov.30, 2018. I can recall on opening night, standing in the couch area staring across the room in awe that my journey of thirtythree years has led me to the fulfillment of a dream. And that dream was guided by God.
By Jeff James The dream of opening a wine bar became my dream about eight years ago. Although, it started at the age of fifteen when I got my first job as a busboy in the restaurant industry. While working in restaurants through college, I found myself an Assistant General Manager of a restaurant serving seventy-five wines by the glass. As my passion for wine grew, I took a job working for an alcohol distributor where I took the course and received my sommelier’s certificate. With the birth of my two daughters, I became a stay at home dad by day, and I got back in the restaurant business working nights as a server and sommelier at a local steakhouse. I didn’t realize that through it all, GOD was providing me with the tools for my dream. My opportunity came about when my co-worker, the son of a popular local restaurateur, made the connection that his mom wanted to open a wine bar in Mandeville. Vicky Bayley, who has owned, operated and consulted many successful restaurants, was ready to come home. Through the course of her life, she was also being prepared by God to come together with me to open a wine bar. We went to lunch to talk about our plans and nine months later, we opened St. Ann Wine Bar. With the help of Vicky, my dream had come into exsistance. St. Ann Wine Bar
We created a comfortable environment where people can come together to share light bites, enjoy a glass of wine, and make memories. It also is a place to educate people about wine and its purpose. Offering fifty wines by the glass and half glasses will allow people try a variety of wines. We will also be offering seminars and educational avenues to learn the life cycle of wine which fits in with the decor concept of farm to table. We have a bar area with banquets, couch areas, the porch, tables and chairs and a banquet room. Our banquet room is named “The Harvest Room” referring to a coming together to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Pouring Life Into a Dream
Everyone has a purpose and a dream. All of the things that happen in your life are preparing you for that purpose and dream. What I have learned is to believe in your dream, never let life get you down, and have faith in God and His timing. A toast to you and your Dream, Cheers.

A New Leaf
Did you know that some of the most dangerous influences to our health come from things that we willingly expose ourselves to? Many of the products that we use on and in our bodies, and in our homes every day contain harmful toxins. Even those labeled “natural” or “organic” can contain harmful ingredients. We challenge you to read the ingredients on the back of your favorite product and “Google” the ones that you cannot pronounce. You will be amazed to see what is in it. The “Think Dirty” app and the “Environmental Working Group” website are also great resources to check the toxicity levels of products. Once we learned about the dangers in products, it was time to ditch the old and switch to toxic-free products. Our research led us to Young Living, who offers safe and toxin free options. Young Living embraces rigorous quality control standards to ensure that products meet strict specifications from the sourcing to the seed until the bottle is sealed. While they are an essential oil company, Young Living is also a fully equipped natural products company with supplements, beauty products, household cleaning products, kids and baby products, personal care products, oral care, pet care, and makeup - one stop shopping without the toxins. It is our hope to inspire you to do your own research on the products that you allow into your home. Today is the perfect time to turn over a new leaf and kick toxins to the curb.

DISABILITY INCOME INSURANCE Can Help Protect Your Paycheck Your ability to earn an income may be one of your most valuable assets. Think about your house, your car and your health. Would you go without homeowners insurance, car insurance or health insurance? With that in mind, shouldn’t you consider protecting another important asset: your paycheck? You and your ability to earn an income may be a large part of what your entire financial future is based on. Paying rent or a mortgage, saving for retirement, or funding your or your children’s education may all depend on your ability to continue earning a living.

well as alternative income streams such as investments or group disability coverage. While no one wants to think about losing their ability to work, it’s important to have a plan for your financial future so you know what you should do if you were unable to earn an income. After all, an income-protection strategy isn’t just for you; it’s for the people you love.
UNDERSTANDING THE RISK Just about everyone who has a job needs some sort of disability income insurance - including those who work in the home. According to a Life Happens survey, you have a 3-in-10 chance of suffering an illness or injury during your work career which would keep you out of work for three months or more. In addition, a fact sheet from the Social Security Administration reveals that just over one in four of today’s 20 year-olds will become disabled before reaching age 67. It’s clear: Whether you earn an income or are a stay-athome parent, the value you provide will need to be replaced in the event you become disabled. The financial consequences can be far reaching. For example, a 25-year-old worker who makes $50,000 a year and suffers a permanent disability could lose $3.8 million in future earnings according to the Life Foundation. How do you decide what coverage is right for you? When thinking about your disability income insurance needs, consider a solid income-protection strategy—one that includes disability income insurance— to help you continue paying expenses and keep your commitments if there’s an interruption in income. There’s no substitute for a thorough needs analysis that can be conducted by a financial professional. As part of the planning process, be sure to consider both your short-term and long-term expenses as

CONTINUITY OF HEALTHY LIVING
By Dr. Luis Soto
Do people owe you money? This is one of the worst situations you can be in. You try to forget about it, but it doesn’t take too much for something to happen that brings bitter memories of how resentful and mad you feel about what belongs to you. Unfairness robs your peace. My business partner owed me money. Every time I reminded him, there was a new excuse or a false promise. I tried hard not to think about it, but every time I saw him or even heard about him, I felt my blood boiling inside of me. The peace that I felt that day suddenly was turned into agitation, restlessness, and frustration. I couldn’t stand it.After searching my heart, I felt that this injustice could be overturned by blessing my partner. Every time I saw him, I silently declared blessings upon his family, and his finances. It worked for a while; however, he still owed me. I decided to forgive him. I declared that I didn’t have anything against him. I set him free. It worked for a few weeks, but he still owed me. Finally, I did the unthinkable; I forgave him the debt. I asked him, for the last time, if he was going to pay me and a bunch of excuses ensued. I settled it in my heart that he owes me nothing. I forgave him, and that day, I totally surrendered. I felt peace, I could breathe, and I had no remorse. Time went by, and he became very ill. Before he died, I went to visit him and told him that I was praying for his healing. Before I left, he gave a name and number of somebody he wanted me to call, and a few days later, he died. To my surprise, when I called that person, I was informed that the money owed to me was going to be paid. The only difference was that instead of receiving $5,000 which was the amount owed to me, I was given $60,000. I

was confused. It didn’t make any sense. But I can tell you, that the freedom, peace, and presence of God that I felt were much superior compared to the fairness and respect that I thought I deserved and fought for. Our daily struggles can consume us to the point that our bodies and emotions go into a massive turmoil which may lead us into sickness. Gastritis, stomach ulcers, hypertension, palpitations, heart attacks, strokes, insomnia, and even depression are just a few of the many illnesses that are a result of lack of forgiveness, resentment, hatred, pride and wrath. Our emotions, bad attitudes, and toxic thoughts can definitely ruin our health. God is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we ask or think. To keep your heart healthy, you need to live and breathe God’s perspective. He’s the only one who can pour life and strength into your soul and spirit. He’s the one who can heal our body, mind, and give us thoughts of peace.
Welcome to the balanced life.
“Be anxious for nothing, in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God; and the peace of God , which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:6-7.

AUTHOR
of Purpose
By Chrissy Cifuentes Lifestyles’ magazine seeks to recognize individuals within the region who have made an impact on arts and culture throughout Louisiana. Jewelry designers, family painters, culinary giants and many more are acknowledged for their outstanding crafts. However, many do not associate the written word as a modern tool of showcasing artistry. For our arts and culture showcase, we are celebrating an author who makes an impact on her world daily as an educator, mother, wife and writer. Cheree’ Carter Gomez is the author of “Glitz, Glamour and God.” Her book is geared to young women in order to teach purity, love, forgiveness, and inner beauty in a world of negativity. Gomez wrote the book in 2009; however, her message of hope still resonates in readers across the country. Within the pages of “Glitz, Glamour and God”, readers are taken on the personal journey of Gomez’s past. She reveals key components of her own life in order to assist other young women through the trials and tribulations that they face on a daily basis. The book’s synopsis reads, “This book promises you that no matter what you have done, what secrets you are keeping, or how distant you may be from believing that you are special and deserving of all things good, you can transform your life into one of true glitz and glamour – as God intends for you.”
22
Not only does her story-telling qualify her book as spiritual artwork, but also her genuine advice that is strategically geared to uplift and encourage young adults. Whether in scripture based principles, relationship guidance or casual girl talk, Gomez has an impeccable way of reaching women throughout all walks of life. According to Pastor Kathy Duplantis of Covenant Church, “Cheree’ is a true beauty, inside and out. And, in her book, she shares her personal discovery of the source of real beauty. In a world filled with wrong messages designed to rob girls of their virtue and self-esteem, I believe that this book will be a great inspiration to young girls to follow God and His glorious plan for their lives.” This is not the only book that Gomez has written. She also paired up with her sister, Lifestyles’ writer Chrissy Cifuentes, to write a children’s book speaking of true purpose. The book is titled, “Under the Indian Moon.” The whimsical story follows a young peacock as he discovered his true identity while meeting many exciting characters along his journey. The book is geared to children of ages, but the theme is powerful enough to speak across all age ranges. In her spare time, Gomez journals her thoughts in the hopes of writing a new book; however, she spends the majority of her time as an educator, mother, and wife. With an energetic seven year old boy keeping her busy, and a new addition to the family on the way, one thing is for certain. Gomez will certainly have new aspects of life, love, and spirituality for her readers in the years to come.

VOICE OF OUR YOUTH PURSUIT OF PURPOSE
Perspective of Purpose When this time of the year rolls around, one of the most talked about topics is renewal. The phrase “New Year, new me,” is a cliché spewing out of the mouths of many, and although it sounds nice on paper, actually enforcing the vision is much more challenging. Many people use the month of January as a goal starter while finding inspiration in the idea of recreating their lifestyle and reforming old habits. While there are many people who easily find inspiration in seeking body changes, finding a cleaner diet, or simply wanting to alter their look, happiness outweighs the temporary joy resting in physical appearances. Mental health is something many struggle to speak about, yet it is one of the most vital parts of steadily growing as a person. In this day and age, the media portrays merriment in a form of bodily beauty which is utterly wrong and cynical on so many levels. Picture this: It’s early in the morning on January first with the sun perfectly kissing each cheek of your half-asleep face. Since you’ve decided to start off your year with a refreshed mentality, you spring up out of bed the minute the alarm screeches your eardrums and didn’t press snooze four times like you usually do. You feel proud of yourself, but find yourself thinking about how nice those extra five minutes would’ve been as you take your morning stroll around the block. You continue these honorable decisions of waking up early for most of the month, yet after being three weeks
By Ali Vicknair
in, your bed just seems all too cozy to get out of, and you “will just work extra hard tomorrow.” The ultimate issue with directly using the New Year as a way to change your entire being, is that we begin forgetting every single morning we awake with life, we are granted a new and fair chance at greatness. There is a very misunderstood message behind the idea of change. Many like to conclude that change is only granted to those who are commendable individuals; however, there is never a point in life that one is too far from turning back and choosing the path of righteousness. Making for a much greater story, many big platforms use the tales that are entertaining rather than the raw and authentic accounts of genuine hardships that are overcome through life experiences and gained wisdom. Humans are reactive. If you give them a reason to rise above the circumstance’s life grants them, they will seek out a way, and find an underlying message in the midst of their misery. There are beautiful pictures painted in the creases and cracks of pain, and if one looks close enough, even the most crooked human being can be viewed in a certain light, appearing a masterpiece. It’s all about perception.

Pendants of Purpose
by Chrissy Cifuentes
Crystalyn Aucoin is a New Orleans jewelry designer embodied with purpose. Her newly released jewelry line is stunning and classic. With one of a kind designs like the “Gratitude” and “Strength” pendants, her art is timeless, meaningful and perfect for every day wear. But, many do not know the story behind her inspiration for these captivating designs. Each piece is birthed from a deep love rooted in family and a message of resilience. With over 10 years in the jewelry industry, Aucoin has a heart for design. Her jewelry journey began when her sister, Candice Patterson, connected her with Aucoin Hart Jewelers. “My sister loved her job, and I was looking for that same type of passion within my career,” she said. “I found it while working at Aucoin Hart in sales.” It did not take very long for Aucoin to find her niche. Sales was perfect for her, and she especially enjoyed communicating with customers by making their design dreams become a reality. “I loved helping them with their engagement rings and especially giving them what they wanted for their special day,” she said. Each day provided a new adventure while working at Aucoin Hart. Her own heart was soon captured by Ryan Aucoin who
24
was a diamond buyer for his family’s business. The two got along perfectly and were married in 2011. The pair made a dynamic team, and many could not fathom how they worked so well together. “Many people encouraged us not to talk about work at home once we were married, but that was impossible. We loved what we did and we loved it even more because we did it together.” As the years passed, the pair decided to start a family. Crystalyn found out that she was pregnant, and the married couple was overjoyed. However, on the day that they found out that they were expecting a baby boy, tragic news for Ryan was also delivered. “It all started with pains in his back,” said Aucoin. “We discovered that he had cancer on the same day that we were told that our child was a boy.” Ryan was only 36 years old when he was diagnosed with peripheral t-cell lymphoma in his lungs, but he did not let his illness keep him from enjoying his new family. He continued to battle the odds while keeping a positive outlook on the situation. “He would always say that we were so lucky for what he had and that we should look for the lessons in our situation to teach our son,” she said. “He wanted us to help others going through financial difficulties and other problems that come with cancer.”
Health & Wealth
In an effort to conquer Ryan’s cancer, the couple moved to Texas for a stem cell transplant at M.D. Anderson when their son Winston was only 5 weeks old. According to Aucoin, their family played a huge role in helping Ryan fight his disease. “We had so much love shown to us from our families,” she said. “Our moms even moved out to Texas to be with us.” Ryan, Crystalyn and their new baby boy, were inseparable. Their bond was unbreakable, and that same bond is the inspiration behind Aucoin’s “Gratitude” pendant. “The interconnected circles represent our relationship as well as all of the people who helped us on our journey,” she said. “We were so grateful for all of the support we received. Each person was a connection that gave us strength in our time of weakness.”
After two years of intense fighting, Ryan passed away. Their child was only 16 months old, and Aucoin found herself at a crossroad. “I was asking myself who I was. What was my identity?” she said. “I was a new mom, and I just lost my husband. I wanted to live with some sort of purpose.” Those thoughts propelled her to seek a new outlet within herself which ignited her ideas for a new path. For a while, Aucoin hit a creative wall. She found herself not able to express herself in the ways she once did. She took time to discover a new, hidden treasure within and dedicated herself to helping others in similar situations of sorrow. “Ryan was so heartfelt, and I knew that he would have wanted me to help others who were going through cancer battles,” she said. “I decided to get even more involved with my good friend, Chad Landry’s, foundation “New Orleans Lymphomanics”, I also became a committee member of the Karen T. Stall Research and Breast Institute.” Aucoin assisted in raising money for these foundations and found a new calling in helping cancer patients, widows and caregivers. Although her new calling gave her life purpose, jewelry was still calling her name. Aucoin knew that a piece of her heart was still with her jewelry career; however, she
www.lifestyleshealthandwealth.com
also knew that it would have to take a new form in order for it to fit her current lifestyle. “I knew that I was willing and ready to work harder than ever to support my son and myself, yet I wanted to be with my son and have flexible hours,” she said. “I also wanted to share my story with other women who were dealing with their own life struggles. So I built my website and learned how to connect by using social media. I wanted to start a jewelry brand with greater meaning than the obvious.” As Aucoin began to heal, her creativity started to shine as bright as diamonds. The visions for her jewelry line started to take form as she sketched every pendant. Every piece within her line has a meaning to her, but she encourages her customers to find a meaning for themselves. “After Ryan passed away, I had a mission to live differently,” she said. “I started designing and feeling inspired to create meaningful, wear forever jewelry that can be passed down.” Unlike many lines that are intricately designed, Aucoin takes pride the in fact that her line is minimalistic. She states that her goal is to have her jewelry become a part of the history of the woman wearing it. “When you think back to the important women in your life, oftentimes you can remember the jewelry they wore. It becomes part of their history,” stated Aucoin. “These designs are meant for every-day wear so that it can become a part of them.” Aucoin is still involved with numerous cancer awareness foundations throughout the city; however, she also realizes that her customers may have different passions that deserve the same recognition. This fact is why Aucoin occasionally gives her customers the choice to donate a percentage of their online purchase to the foundation of their choice. “I want my jewelry to empower each woman that purchases from me,” she said. “This gives them a way to give back to what they truly care about.” Through the ups and downs, Crystalyn Aucoin has sought to keep her late husband’s legacy alive through raising money for cancer patients, counseling those who are in pain and raising her son Winston to know the impact of his father. Her line’s brand is simple. It is a mission to give back and to move forward. She is finding her own healing and happiness through this new path. With a jewelry line filled with a purpose of kindness, strength and gratitude she hopes to set an example for her son and for others that through tough times, goodness can emerge. Avoiding Family Feuds BY CHIP MORRISON
are some very simple estate planning techniques that will completely avoid probate, and greatly reduce the risk of your family becoming entangled in years of unnecessary litigation. While it is true that some believe that a bad plan is better than no plan, it is easy to imagine the problems people can leave behind when there is no plan in place. Protect your family by planning ahead - make it your New Year’s resolution to get your estate plan firmly in place in 2019. So, how can you prevent your family from fighting after you are gone? • Meet with a professional. Talking with an experienced estate planning attorney will help you create an estate plan that will accomplish all of your wishes, and will certainly help avoid any problematic surprises that your family may encounter. • Considering leaving your estate in trust. When a parent leaves their entire estate to a trust, that property can be administered exactly how the parent desires. This can be accomplished during the life of the parent, as a way to completely avoid the probate process altogether.
The end of the holiday season can sometimes bring families both sadness and relief. While the holidays are a time when loved ones get together to enjoy each other’s company, holiday stress can certainly lead to trivial arguments and miscommunications. Imagine the disagreements that can arise if something more serious were to happen like leaving your loved ones behind to divide up property if you didn’t plan properly. Unfortunately, family feuds are constantly in the news. It has become all too common for probate attorneys to see more contested or litigated probate cases, than not. Many families do not realize that there

• Updating your estate plan regularly. As your life changes, your estate plan should too. Unintentionally leaving out some family members could lead to a fight after you are no longer around to correct the oversight. No one wants their own family saga to serve as a cautionary tale after their death, so don’t put your loved ones in a situation where the legacy you left to them ends up as another contested probate matter. Make and keep a resolution to talk to an estate planning attorney this year to discuss ways to protect your legacy and future family harmony.

Reinstated Medicare Medicare beneficiaries who enroll in Medicare Advantage plans sometimes find themselves stuck in a plan that they do not like. Although the plan’s Summary of Benefits covers the specifics of how the plan works, it’s all too easy for a beneficiary to misunderstand the rules or forget to check whether a certain doctor is in the network. Beginning in 2019, Medicare beneficiaries that are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1, can use this OEP period to make a one-time change between January 1 and March 31. You can change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another Medicare Advantage plan. You can also leave a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (and a Part D drug plan). However, be careful. This period does NOT guarantee you a free pass into a Medicare supplement to go alongside your Original Medicare.
Open Enrollment Period (OEP) This Medicare OEP is not new. The ACA law signed in 2010 ended the Medicare OEP and replaced it with a Medicare Advantage Disenrollment period that ran January 1 to February 14. This period was different from the Medicare OEP in that it only allowed Medicare Advantage enrollees to go back to Original Medicare. It did not allow them to change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another. This is not to be confused with the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 every year. Working with an insurance agent is free and will help you to avoid common errors.

SPIRITUALITY: KNOWING YOUR PURPOSE
The Perfect Gift of All Ah….it’s that time of year once again. It is a time to visit family, share a cup of your favorite “joe” with friends, mull over past Christmas memories, or bake the cookies. It’s all part of this enriching month with all it has to offer. The year wanes. No more yearning for what might have been. Instead, open this time of year’s generous gift of “what is.” Let the darkest day shed new light as you rediscover old-fashion reasons for a heartfelt season of simple splendor. Remember that lyric of glad tidings of comfort and joy? It seems all we have time to do is be efficient is to turn to electronics to have an easier life. But now, all I seem to do is juggle the many demands of life and tech gadgets. Help! It is time to stop and breathe. Well, we can throw the biggest pity ever, or we can chose to remember to have an attitude of gratitude for something very simplistically significant, but profoundly amazing. It was the reason for the season, “for unto us a child was born!” Remember the songs, “Away in the Manger, Hosanna in the Highest, O Holy Night, O Come Let Us Adore Him, Christ the Lord,” Yes, Christ the Savior was born in a lowly stable, bearing no resemblance of a Christmas tree. There were no trimmings or a wreath on the door. In fact, there was no room at the inn. Now that would bring many sad faces. Nope, not one shiny thing around.

There was just some cattle and sheep, a trough with some hay, and only Joseph there to assist Mary in her birthing. She hadn’t even “known” him yet to deliver her child. What? No midwife? No, Lamaze classes or sterile birthing room? The Christ came with no packages or ribbons or bows. There was no glitz or glam to be found. And yet, how profound that unto us a child was born and a Savior has come. You see, when all of our holiday hustle and our shiny perfections and confections are reduced to the simple, yet richly abundant, amazing grace of the celebration in our hearts and minds which, by the way, can be done without having to show up with nothing but yourself. To just be able to show your love to the one who loved you so much that God “gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16. Wow, now that’s simple, yet profound abundance. Emmanuel! God with us! The total package of rich abundance, a priceless treasure, and incomparable gift that doesn’t even require batteries. But, He did come “wrapped” in swaddling clothes. So remember during this New Year, humbleness and simplicity was His celebration. The celebration of a King and a Kingdom that shall have no end. The best gift ever! And it’s only requirement is to BELIEVE.

What’s Your Why? The New Year is upon us. Do any of these statements sound familiar? My New Year’s resolution is to get into better shape. My New Year’s resolution is to get back in the gym. My New Year’s resolution is to lose weight, eat better, stop being so lazy… the list goes on and on. Some of the most frequently stated New Year’s resolutions have something to do with a person’s physical condition. There’s always a “blast” of wellmeaning people who say it and even go so far as to buy a gym membership, start a new diet, purchase new workout equipment or workout clothes! Are you one of those? Do you know anyone who is? First, let me say that as a personal trainer, I am thrilled to hear anyone talk about getting into better physical shape. What’s heartbreaking is to watch the onslaught of new people who show up at the gym at the beginning of January and by March (or sooner) are no longer coming. If you find yourself being someone (or you know of someone) who has made one of the aforementioned resolutions, and at this reading have already found yourself having broken it or are on the brink of breaking it, consider the following! Toni Ziegler is a Cooper Institute Certified Personal Trainer. She trains at Cross Gates Family Fitness, 1311 Gause Boulevard in Slidell, LA 70458 She is the founder of Your Temple Fitness. The meaning of a resolution is: a firm decision to do or not to do something. Resolutions usually come from a well-meaning desire within a person. However, behind every resolution is the “why” of doing the “something” that the resolution is about. What is your “why” behind your resolution? It has to be important enough to make you overcome all of the excuses about why you may not follow through with your resolution. I believe most people who make a resolution and then break it are being too hard on themselves with regards to the speed at which this resolution will change their lives. With regards to fitness specifically, I tell people who are starting to work out for the first time, or who haven’t been in the gym for years, this simple statement: You didn’t get to where you are overnight, and you won’t get out of it overnight either. So, be kind to yourself. What does that mean? Be real with yourself. Give yourself a chance. Set reasonable goals. Be realistic in your expectations. Find someone who is an expert and talk to them about realistic goals. Seek deep within yourself to figure out what your why is. Write it out, and keep it close to remind yourself every time you hesitate to follow through on your commitment. Ask yourself “why” you made the resolution in the first place. This column is about fitness, so I’ve used fitness as the example; however, I believe this applies to all resolutions we make in life! Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. 3 John 1:2 I pray 2019 will be your best year ever! And remember, be kind to yourself. God bless! 29

Resolution or Intention
It’s the New Year. Once again, it is the time to reflect and set your resolution for the upcoming 12 months. But as we all know, most of the time those resolutions often are never achieved. I wonder if maybe we need to try a different approach. Could setting an intention instead of a resolution be a possible solution, and what is the difference between the two?
Resolution: is a firm decision to do or not to do something. Intention: is a thing that’s intended; an aim or plan. Resolutions can make you feel bound to achieving something and cause disappointment if you don’t reach your goal. Intention setting can be a more gentle approach, allowing you to be driven towards a goal rather than bound to it. The main difference is the attitude behind the actions. If you want to lose weight, intend on taking a walk every day at lunch, or park farther away from the store’s entrance to add some additional steps. Consider these things a new ritual rather than a resolution. Set your intentions to create new rituals. New rituals can open the door for success. They can help you achieve more and think clearly. Regardless of your daily schedule, here are a few rituals you can implement to assist you in achieving your goals.
Rise Early – Even if its 20 minutes. Use this extra time
for prayer, meditation or quiet contemplation. Make your bed - You will have accomplished the first task of the day! Recite Affirmations - Positive statements you can use to reframe how you think about yourself and the day to come. Exercise - A brisk walk in your neighborhood, or even a simple 7-minute workout. Eat well - Think good carbs, fruits and vegetables and some protein. Be grateful – Everyday find 10 things or more to be grateful for. This in itself is life changing. These might seem like minor things–waking up early, making your bed, saying your affirmations, exercising, meditating and eating a good breakfast. But by combining some or all these as part of your daily ritual, you’re well prepped to achieve any intention you set for yourself regardless of what it is.
Taking the time to nurture you is not selfish. Not only do you deserve it, but it puts you in a better state to deal with all your other facets of life.
