DC Go Go Museum Design Studio III

Multi-Use Art Space Anacostia, Washington, D.C.

The importance of Go Go Music to DC is second to none, as this late-60s to late-70s orginated in the nation’s capital; this subgenre of funk is unique to the area, and should be heralded and protected at all costs. With the rapid rise of gentrification in Washington, D.C., it is paramount to not only to preserve this music style, but celebrate its mark on African American music as a whole. “DON’T MUTE DC!” was not just a movement for DC residents to protect their culture, it was a distress signal heard all around the Black American community. Chocolate City is not as “chocolate” as it once was, and due to the redlining, socioecomonic disenfranchisement, and a bevy of other negative elements, the African American communiy of DC barely recognizes the home they have cultivated for decades. The Chuck Brown Go Go Museum will not only house the artifacts of famous acts such as the namesake musician and the Young Senators, but it will be a performance space that formally mimics the ‘call and response’ experience outdoors, and a place of gathering for artists of all mediums in DC to express themselves and embrace the culture they must safeguard.

Fashion Boutique for Virgil Abloh Design Studio II

Commercial Space/Event Space Shaw, Washington, D.C.

Virgil Abloh - born on September 30, 1980, in Rockford, Illinois, to Ghanaian immigrant parents. His mother was a seamstress and his father was a manager in a paint company. Abloh was raised in Rockford, where he attended Boylan Catholic High School, graduating in 1998. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin– Madison in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. He received his Master of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2006 while working for Kanye West at DONDA. He now designs for Off-White, Louis Vuitton, Ikea, Levi, Rimowa and a plethora of fashion and design brands. Abloh contrasts the dogmatic rules of high-end fashion that is often left up for interpretation. He tells the audience what is being presented and uses irony and satire as running themes for his brands. Also, his transcendence from streetwear designer to major luxury fashion brands furthers the arguments of streetwear and street aesthetic belong in the same conversation as high art and high fashion

The mural on the East wall of the adjacent building is maintained to respect the neighborhood and local residents. The cafe has a clear view of the artwork, as the integrity and history of the neighborhood is paramount in this current climate.

The Immigration Pavilion is based upon the latitudinal lines of the Earth. The rich diversity of the American population is demonstrated through the several gateways. The dimension between the gates are based upon the Six degrees of separation theory by Frigyes Karinthy. The idea is that everyone in the world is six steps or fewer from another person, creating the narrative of a “small world.” Each gate of the pavilion represents every 20 degree-latitudinal line and those who lives between each parrellel. The center space acts as the meeting place where people from all cultures and ethnicities can coexist in one place, particularly on the 40th parellel, which runs through Washington, D.C.

Corten Steel Steel alloy material originally produced in the United States, this material is a corrosion resistant steel, that left uncoated develops an outer layer patina. This patina protects the steel from additional corrosion. 14

Park View Apartments Professional Practice

Firm: MGD+ Mixed-Use Apartment Building Boston, Massachusetts Role: Design Development, Unit Programming, Graphic Representation, Presentation Design Througout this project, I was able to use a multitude of computer software during the initial design process of the apartment building and potential addition to the multifamily space. The graphic representation was used for client and investor meetings. Concept and schematic design was already established, and the design development was the emphasis of my role in Park View, specifically programming and parking design.

Residential Home Professional Practice

Firm: MGD+ Single Family Home Renovation Boston, Massachusetts Role: Design Development, Graphic Representation, Presentation Design Working alongside the principal of MGD+, we were able to design a facade renovation of a single family home of a returning client of the firm. During this process, I was responsible for coordinating with material vendors in the Greater Boston Area. Using a combination of design software, we were able to meet the client’s request of a revamped home. Material swatches and color pallets were created and integral in the design development stage.
