Hello!

and welcome to our Sept 2024 to Feb 2025 Season!

As the air turns crisp and the leaves begin to fall, Altrincham Garrick Playhouse is delighted to unveil a captivating Autumn Season, brimming with a diverse array of performances that promise to enchant and inspire.

We open our season with Alan Bennett’s critically acclaimed play, The History Boys. Celebrating its’ 20th Anniversary, this witty and poignant exploration of education, adolescence, and ambition is set in a British boys' school in the 1980s. Directed by Su Mowat, our production promises to deliver Bennett’s sharp humour and deep insights into the lives of young men on the cusp of adulthood.

Brilliantly adapted by Polly Teale, Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre captures the indomitable spirit of one of literature’s most beloved heroines. Jane Eyre's journey from an orphaned child to a strong, independent woman is brought to life with stunning period costumes and a breathtaking set design that will transport audiences to the windswept moors of England.

No season is complete without a touch of magic, and The Wizard of Oz is here to provide just that. Join Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion as they journey down the Yellow Brick Road in search of the Wizard. This family favourite is sure to delight audiences of all ages with its enchanting songs and whimsical characters.

For a dose of festive cheer, don’t miss A Vicar of Dibley Christmas – The Second Coming. This hilarious and heartwarming holiday special, based on the beloved British sitcom, will have you laughing out loud. Join the inimitable Vicar Geraldine and her quirky parishioners for a celebration of community, love, and the true spirit of Christmas.

Our hugely popular traditional pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, runs throughout the holiday season with a spectacular blend of comedy, music, and adventure. This production will feature stunning visual effects, lavish costumes, and plenty of audience participation, making it an absolute must-see for families.

Following a short break after the panto, the Garrick Ensemble return in February 2025 with the groundbreaking play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Adapted by Simon Stephens from Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel, this visually stunning production tells the story of Christopher Boone, a teenager with an extraordinary mind, as he investigates the mysterious death of a neighbour’s dog. This play is a powerful exploration of difference, family, and the human spirit.

In our intimate Studio Theatre, we are proud to present A Season of Irish Plays, celebrating the rich storytelling tradition of Ireland. This special series will feature works by renowned Irish playwrights, offering audiences a chance to experience the depth and diversity of Irish theatre. From poignant dramas to sharp-witted comedies, these plays will capture the essence of Irish culture and history.

At the Garrick Playhouse, we believe in the power of theatre to bring people together. With the Play-Reading Group, the Show Choir and most importantly GAPA – The Garrick Academy of Performing Arts – our community engagement programmes are designed to foster a deeper connection between our audiences and the arts, and encourage people to become more involved with us, whatever their interests and expertise. We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to the Garrick family.

As we open our doors for the Autumn Season, we invite you to join us for a celebration of stories that will make you laugh, cry, and think. Come and experience the transformative power of live performance and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Set in the 1980's, The History Boys is the story of a group of bright, funny and unruly sixth-formers in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university. Their maverick English teacher is at odds with the young and shrewd supply teacher, whilst their headmaster is obsessed with results and league tables. Staffroom rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence overflow, provoking not only universal questions about the nature of history and how it is taught but also questions about the purpose of education today.

Their A Levels may be over, but the real learning has just begun…

Celebrating it’s 20th Anniversary and hailed as “one of the finest plays Alan Bennett has ever written”, The History Boys opened at the National Theatre in 2004 to rave reviews, a sell-out run and went on to become one of their biggest ever hits, winning over 30 major awards including the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best New Play. In a recent national survey this comic masterpiece was voted the nation’s favourite play.

"Pass it on boys... that's the game I wanted you to learn... pass it on"

WARNING: This play contains strong language and adult themes, including sexual misconduct and discussions about sensitive historical events. Age Guidance: 14+

JANE EYRE

As a child, the orphaned Jane Eyre is taught by a succession of severe guardians to stifle her natural exuberance. A part of herself is locked away, out of view of polite society... until she arrives at Rochester's house as a governess to his young child. Soon Rochester's passionate nature reawakens Jane's hidden self, but darker secrets are stirring in the attic...

A bold and theatrically inventive adaptation of the literary classic that puts the interior life of the novel on stage.

Charlotte Brontë’s story of the trailblazing Jane Eyre is as inspiring as ever.

On the way she teams up with a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodsman and a Cowardly Lion and they all must avoid the clutches of the Wicked Witch of the West, who is trying to steal the mysterious magic slippers that once belonged to her evil sister but are now on Dorothy's feet.

A Vicar of Dibley Christmas: The Second Coming

No, no, no, no, Yes! That’s right… Following on from our recent smash-hit production of The Vicar of Dibley in February 2024, the nation’s favourite chocolate loving Vicar and her beloved sidekicks are back!

When Hugo and Alice return from their honeymoon, Alice finds that she is putting on a little more than just holiday weight and she turns to the Vicar for advice!

Geraldine is still desperately trying to bring the Dibley Parish Council to some order. After the carnage of the Village Quiz and organising a week of 'Radio Dibley', the Vicar feels she may be living on a different planet.

Then just when things couldn’t get any more bizarre in Dibley, Geraldine is flabbergasted when little verger Alice actually has a good idea! Why not put on a Nativity? Why not indeed! What could possibly go wrong?

A fantastically festive and belly-laughing production awaits at Altrincham Garrick Playhouse. Don’t miss it!

CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME

Based upon the International best-selling novel written by Mark Haddon

“A beautiful, dazzlingly inventive show about the wonders of life”

Evening Standard

Christopher, fifteen years old, stands beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight, and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain and is exceptional at maths, but he is ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. But Christopher’s detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that turns his world upsidedown.

A YEAR OF IRISH DRAMA

A dark comedy-thriller and a modern classic play...

Tues 1 - Sun 6 October 2024

THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE

WARNING: This production includes scenes of violence, cruelty and strong language. The production also contains sexual references and themes of loneliness, abuse and mental health.

An Irish tale of love and loss, with a bit of madness in between...

In the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, Maureen Folan a plain, lonely woman, tied to her manipulative and ageing mother, Mag – comes alive at her first and possibly last prospect of a new life. But Mag has other ideas; and her interference sets in motion a train of events that leads inexorably towards the play’s breathtaking conclusion.

A Tony Award-winning dark comedy thriller, The Beauty Queen of Leenane is one of playwright Martin McDonagh’s (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Lieutenant of Inishmore) finest achievements. The play conjures up the unbearable tension and loneliness of an isolated existence that surely speaks to all of us today.

“Crackles with emotional fire and the blackest of comedy that is both hilarious and horrific” (The Guardian)

“We are all born mad. Some remain so”. A tragi-comedy in two acts

Tues 21 - Sun 26 January 2025

WAITING FOR GODOT

Two wandering tramps, Vladimir and Estragon, wait by a lonely tree, to meet up with Mr. Godot, an enigmatic figure in a world where time, place and memory are blurred and meaning is where you find it.

The tramps hope that Godot will change their lives for the better. Instead, two eccentric travellers arrive, one man on the end of the other's rope. The results are both funny and dangerous in this existential masterpiece.

Celia Bonner

When Samuel Beckett's play exploded on to the London stage in 1953, it shocked as many people as it delighted. There had never been a play like it; indeed it was said that: "Beckett has achieved a theoretical impossibility – a play in which nothing happens, that yet keeps audiences glued to their seats.”

Today, Waiting for Godot is accepted as one of the most significant plays of the 20th Century.

“You can learn to decode us!”

Brian Friel’s masterpiece –his finest, most deeplythought and felt play.

Many of our stars aren’t actually on the stage!

Our brilliant volunteers are vital members of the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse team. They share our love of theatre and generously give their time to support our performances in many ways.

We couldn’t do what we do without our amazing team of passionate and dedicated volunteers, and we’re always on the look out for more fantastic people to join us!

Our hugely-valued front-of-house volunteers support us with the opening of the theatre, welcoming patrons, selling programmes and refreshments, checking ticket bookings and showing audiences to their seats, making people feel comfortable and excited for the performance ahead!

“I started volunteering for Front of House (FoH) as an usher and then decided to try the kiosk which I really like, as there is more interaction with people. There's a good FoH community and it's nice to stay behind after a show and have a chat with other volunteers. Dressing up for Treasure Island was great fun and we really felt part of the production.

More recently, working as an Assistant Stage Manager (ASM), I've got to know other backstage crew who I only knew in passing before. It’s fascinating seeing a play coming together and being part of the team that supports the cast and director. The ASM role is definitely more of a commitment, but I'd say to anyone, just try it – it's great fun. It can be hard work, but it's rewarding”.

Volunteering at the Garrick not only helps our theatre to thrive, but is a great way to meet new people, develop new skills, gain experience and become part of our theatre community. We welcome people from all backgrounds and levels of experience and expertise.

“Joining the Garrick gave me the best excuse to paint, cut and glue again for an important and exciting cause! I was tasked with designing and making gadgets, sourcing random items and gathering props for studio and main stage shows. My experience has really made my heart sing! On joining I became the newest member of an established team of talented, like-minded creatives & technicians who welcomed me so thoroughly that we soon became friends. It’s a lovely place to work and I’m thriving by being involved. I’m feeling that there are a lot more opportunities to engage in other areas of the company should I wish so I’m very much planning to be here for the long term!

The heart of the Garrick pumps with the passion and energy of its volunteers and you feel really valued here. I’m also thrilled to have my creations being enjoyed by hundreds of theatre-goers”.

Claire Eddleston-Rose

There are many opportunities to volunteer at the Garrick, and we welcome your involvement at any level, Whether it’s designing or helping to build one of the many sets we create each year, working backstage on productions, using your expertise on props, lighting, sound, make-up or costumes, whatever your niche, we'd love for you to join our family!

Filmed live from The Old Vic in London during a sold out run in 2019, Matthew Warchus (Matilda The Musical) directs this giddy and surprisingly modern reflection on fame, desire and loneliness.

Jodie Comer’s (Killing Eve) Olivier and Tony Award-winning performance in Suzie Miller’s gripping one-woman play returns to cinemas.

Prima Facie takes us to the heart of where emotion and experience collide with the rules of the game.

Justin Martin directs this solo tour de force, captured live in 2022 during a sold out run at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End.

The theatre has its own in-house facilities including a professional workshop, creating our own scenery, as well as lighting, sound, props and wardrobe departments, all of which wouldn’t be out of place if they were found in a top professional theatre.

If you like theatre... no, if you love theatre, drama, comedy, musical theatre, play reading, poetry and much more and would relish the opportunity to meet new people, then the Altrincham Garrick Play Reading Club is for you.

Here is an opportunity for you to have fun whether you are an enthusiast, a participant or something else altogether.

No matter if you have never read a play before, if you studied a play or two in school or are a die-hard enthusiast, all are welcome to join us as we read our way through an extensive list of plays and musicals new and old.

Play readings take place once a month in the Garrick Bar.

Available for Wheelchair seating. Advance booking required.

We also have a Loop System for patrons with hearing aids.

The event is all about relaxed, no pressure reading, so don't worry about not reading things correctly or in a certain way. We're all working through it together.

Whilst some of us have taken part in plays, we're not about deep intellectual debate either. We may discuss a play but no one is ever expected to have previous knowledge of a play.

The best way to read a play is to do it out loud, so join us and give it a try?

Our reasonably priced bar and coffee bar will be open too. So if you would like to see what we have to offer before committing, then you are most welcome to have a drink with us and soak up the atmosphere.

The first session is free and thereafter it will be a minimum of £5 per person, or as much as you wish and are able to donate to support your local Theatre.
