Two wandering tramps, Vladimir and Estragon, wait by a lonely tree, to meet up with Mr. Godot, an enigmatic figure in a world where time, place and memory are blurred and meaning is where you find it.
The tramps hope that Godot will change their lives for the better. Instead, two eccentric travellers arrive, one man on the end of the other's rope. The results are both funny and dangerous in this existential masterpiece.
When Samuel Beckett's play exploded on to the London stage in 1953, it shocked as many people as it delighted. There had never been a play like it; indeed it was said that: "Beckett has achieved a theoretical impossibility – a play in which nothing happens, that yet keeps audiences glued to their seats.”
Today, Waiting for Godot is accepted as one of the most significant plays of the 20th Century.
Monday 3 – Sunday 9 February at 7:30pm Saturday Matinée 2:30pm RELAXED PERFORMANCE:
Based upon the International best-selling novel written by Mark Haddon
Adapted for the stage by Simon Stephens
Directed by Joseph Meighan
“An uplifting, touching and very funny play that will leave audiences inspired”
“A beautiful, dazzlingly inventive show about the wonders of life”
Christopher, fifteen years old, stands beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight, and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain and is exceptional at maths, but he is illequipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. But Christopher’s detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that turns his world upside-down.
Simon Stephens’ adaptation of Mark Haddon’s bestselling, award-winning novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time offers a richly theatrical exploration of this touching and bleakly humorous tale.

Tom Morton-Smith’s Oppenheimer is a riveting exploration of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb. This intense and thought-provoking human drama delves into the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by the "father of the atomic bomb," whose groundbreaking scientific work forever altered the course of history. With the looming spectre of war and its devastating impact, Oppenheimer provides a timely reflection on the complexities of power, responsibility, and the human cost of progress.
From the profound to the playful, GAPA – The Garrick Academy of Performing Arts – offers a lighthearted escape with The Addams Family, a quirky, fun-filled musical based on Charles Addams’ beloved cartoon characters. With its catchy songs, witty humour, and a delightful cast of characters, The Addams Family is a perfect choice for those seeking a heartwarming, humorous show.
The Worst Witch brings to the stage the magical world of Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches. Based on Jill Murphy’s beloved book series, this stage adaptation follows the adventures of Mildred Hubble, a student who may not be the best witch at the Academy, but whose kind heart and determination make her a hero in the end. With plenty of magical fun, The Worst Witch is an enchanting story that celebrates bravery, friendship, and the importance of staying true to oneself.
John Steinbeck’s Of Mice And Men has been acclaimed as one of the most powerful works in American theatre. This haunting tale of two displaced migrant workers, George and Lennie, during the Great Depression explores the fragility of dreams, the need for human connection, and the harsh realities of life. With its themes of friendship, loneliness, and sacrifice, Of Mice and Men remains a timeless exploration of the human spirit, and a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by those who live on society’s margins.
For a sharp, modern twist, we present Vardy vs Rooney: The Wagatha Christie Trial, a highenergy courtroom drama that captivated the world and ignited social media in 2022. This clever, deliciously entertaining play brings to life the infamous legal battle between Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney. With razor-sharp wit and a keen eye on the media circus that surrounded the trial, Vardy vs Rooney is both an exploration of celebrity culture and a darkly funny commentary on the power dynamics between women in the public sphere.
Beautiful – The Carole King Musical is the Tony Award-winning story of Carole King’s remarkable rise to fame, chronicling her journey from a young girl with big dreams to one of the most successful songwriters of all time. With an incredible soundtrack of songs, Beautiful is a celebration of resilience, talent, and the transformative power of music. It’s a joyous journey through some of the most iconic songs in pop history that’ll have you singing (and dancing)! Also, don’t miss the Season of Irish Plays in our intimate Studio Theatre, which continues with the musical A Man of No Importance, closely followed by Little Gem, a contemporary comedy about three generations of Irish women, and concludes in June with one of the greatest Irish plays ever written, Brian Friel’s Translations. At the Garrick Playhouse, we believe in the power of theatre to bring people together. With the Play-Reading Group, the Show Choir and most importantly GAPA – The Garrick Academy of Performing Arts – our community engagement programmes are designed to foster a deeper connection between our audiences and the arts, and encourage people to become more involved with us, whatever their interests and expertise. We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to the Garrick family.
We hope you’ll join us for this exciting mix of performances, each offering something unique and special. It’s a season of stories that will stay with you long after the curtain falls.

“Win the race, find the answer, win the war” Meet the father of the Atomic Bomb.
1939: Fascism spreads across Europe, Franco marches on Barcelona and two German chemists discover the processes of atomic fission. In Berkeley, California, theoretical physicists recognise the horrendous potential of this new science: a weapon that draws its power from the very building blocks of the universe.
Struggling to cast off his radical past and thrust into a position of power and authority, the charismatic J. Robert Oppenheimer races to win the 'battle of the laboratories' and create a weapon so devastating that it would bring about an end not just to the Second World War but to all wars.
Originally written for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2015, Tom Morton-Smith's play takes us into the heart of science, politics and humanity clashing in the propulsive story of the Manhattan Project and the development of the world’s first nuclear bombs.
Age: 14 + WARNING: This production contains strong language, sexual references and adult themes, including suicide, references to racism and other challenging themes. The production also contains graphic descriptions of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear attacks and aftermath, which may cause upset or distress.

The affecting, Pulitzer Prize-winning story of enduring friendship and the crumbling of the American dream.
Written by John Steinbeck
Directed by Joseph Meighan
“Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place... with us it ain't like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us.”
George and Lennie are migrants with a dream; a dream of a better life, a place where they can belong, where Lennie feels safe and George can be somebody. But this is the Great Depression, not many dreams come true in a time where a few have plenty but most have nothing. When the friends take a job on Curly’s farm, tragedy unfolds leading to a heart-breaking decision.
John Steinbeck’s classic novel is more than 80 years old, but with themes of economic migration, racism, prejudice and exclusion it remains a parable for our times.A story of enduring friendship and hope.

about The Mousetrap…
The Wagatha Christie Trial is currently the most intriguing mystery on everybody's minds!
On a quiet October morning in 2019, a tweet from Coleen Rooney surfaced on Twitter. In the detailed post, she revealed that over the past five months, she had been working to uncover who had been leaking her private Instagram stories to the press. Driven by suspicion, she’d blocked all but one account from viewing her stories, and baited that account with fake stories that would later appear in The Sun newspaper – and that account belonged to Rebekah Vardy. What followed was a trial that gripped the nation, and would soon be dubbed “The Wagatha Christie Trial.”
Only a handful of people witnessed what happened behind the closed doors of this footballers’ wives drama – and now you can too in this hilarious production, as it is recounted by the two parties and edited from seven thrilling days of High Court transcripts.

“The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it” Oscar Wilde
Music by Stephen Flaherty
Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens
Book by
Terrence McNally
Directed by
Barry Purves
Musical Direction by Ceri Graves
Tuesday 29 April - Sunday 4
In Dublin in 1964, bus conductor and Oscar Wilde fan Alfie has ambitions to stage Salome, despite the objections of the church hierarchy at St. Imelda's, where his amateur theatre group is based. When a newcomer to town, Adele, joins his passengers, he realises he has found the right person for the title role and starts to assemble his cast.
Meanwhile Alfie's sister Lily mistakes her brother's interest in Adele as romantic - she longs to have him off her hands so she can be free to marry. Little does Lily realise that Alfie's love "dare not speak its name" and the object of his affections is in fact bus driver Robbie.
As opening night draws near, secrets come spilling out which threaten to shake this little community to its core. But camaraderie and the redeeming power of theatre offer a thread of hope in this story of friendship, forbidden love and finding our place in the world.
Winner of the 2003 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, A Man Of No Importance is the second successful collaboration by the team of Terrence McNally, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, all of whom won Tony Awards for Ragtime.
Love, sex, birth and salsa classes. Three generations of women. One extraordinary year.
Happy-go-lucky Amber, fresh out of school, is high on life, double sambucas and boyfriend Paul. That is until the fierce indigestion starts. Lorraine attacks a customer and her boss wants her to see a psychiatrist. She is told to do one nice thing for herself each week, so she starts by signing up for Salsa classes. Meanwhile, Kay is finding life on the wrong side of sixty frustrating. Ailing husband Gem doesn’t like the neighbours coming in to “mind” him, and she’s missing more than just his conversation. And if all that wasn't bad enough, Little Gem makes his presence felt and – well – life is never the same again.
Hilarious and poignant, Elaine Murphy's award-winning play Little Gem was first staged by Guna Nua and Civic Theatre, Tallaght, in 2008, then at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in 2009. It won the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award, the BBC Northern Ireland Drama Award in Association with the Stewart Parker Trust, and the Fishamble Award for Best New Irish Writing.
“Delightful... a play that, like its characters, gurgles and giggles with life even in the face of death” (The Guardian)
Tuesday 10 - Sunday 15 June
“You can learn to decode us!”
by Brian Friel Directed by Charlie Tomlinson
From the acclaimed playwright of Faith Healer and Dancing at Lughnasa, this hauntingly lyrical play is about nothing less than language as the soul of a nation.
In 1833 Baile Beag, County Donegal, a hedge schoolmaster gives his Irish-speaking students a classical education, versing them in Ancient Greek and Latin – but not in English. Meanwhile, the British Army arrives to create a new map of Ireland that will ‘standardise’ the Irish place-names to English. With the schoolmaster’s son returning home from Dublin to serve as the Army’s translator, local farm girl Máire finds herself torn betwen the affections of the local school teacher and the love of a British soldier, between her native tongue and a new language, between the comfort of the world she knows and the excitement of foreign possibilities. The resulting clash of two worlds threatens the very heart of the community as they struggle to interpret a new language and each other. What gets lost in translation?
Brian Friel’s modern masterpiece examines the fractious relationship between people and nations through the lens of language and (mis)communication.
This play appears on the recommended Secondary School Reading List.

If you are a parent, guardian, or work with people with learning or sensory disabilities – such as those on the autism spectrum –you’ll know how difficult it can sometimes be for them to attend regular theatre performances; loud noises, lighting effects and large crowds can make stage shows overwhelming.
At Altrincham Garrick Playhouse, we believe that everyone should be able to experience the magic and wonder of live theatre, and so we are proud to be producing several Relaxed Performances which will deliver the same theatrical experience but with an atmosphere and attitude in the auditorium that makes everyone feel comfortable and safe.
Relaxed Performances are open to anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed performance environment. This may include children, young people and adults with neurodivergence such as autism, learning disabilities and other sensory or communication needs.
A number of adaptations will be made to the show to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable environment for everyone. These include:
l Come and go from the auditorium as you wish, even during the show.
l Express yourself as loudly as you like, or with physical movement, without judgement.
l Access the Theatre and auditorium early.
l Extra Staff on hand to support audiences during their time with us.
l A quiet breakout space available before, during and after the performance.
l Changes to the production’s lighting and sound including reducing the sound levels and removing any lighting that could be overpowering to lessen sensory overload. There’ll be no loud bangs during the performance.
l Auditorium lighting will remain on throughout the performance.
l Elements of surprise will be reduced.
We will be staging Relaxed Performances during the runs of the following productions:
l THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME (Sunday 9 February, 2:30pm)
l THE WORST WITCH
l GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS

Altrincham Garrick Playhouse is more than just a wonderful theatre. It’s a creative artistic hub for the local community, where people come together to connect, learn and celebrate. And we need your help.
Altrincham Garrick Playhouse is a purely self-funding community theatre. We don’t receive any financial help from Arts Organisations or local or regional Councils. Our income is purely generated by the support of our wonderful audiences and supporters, without whom our vital community work, providing life-changing experiences and making exceptional theatre available to all, couldn’t continue. By supporting the Garrick, you are investing in the cultural richness of our community, helping to ensure that the Playhouse remains a place where everyone can unite, be themselves and learn new skills. Your support is what keeps this invaluable resource alive.
