Hello Readers,

Welcome to the January edition of HULLMAG. I would like to wish all our readers, advertisers and contributors a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. We have another great edition for you to enjoy this month with plenty of fantastic advertisers from our part of the County. I do hope that you all mention HullMag when responding to advertisers, they do like to know that their advertising is working for them! I am of the opinion that we should support the local economy as much as possible and by doing so it encourages new business as well as sustaining those already in business. We have two great competitions in this edition, the first is for a pair of tickets for the Sheffield Arena to see Paul Carrack in February which will certainly be a treat for the lucky winner. We are also giving away a pair of tickets to see the UK’s number one lady of the blues rock world: Joanne Shaw Taylor at her Sheffield City Hall show.

House & Home

The UK property market ends 2016 on a positive note At 4.5%, UK house price growth ended 2016 at the same level as 2015, despite Brexit, stamp duty changes and tenants fees ban. Data recently published by lender Nationwide also revealed that month on month prices increased by 0.8%, increasing the average home price to £208,898. Overall, the index report showed that the country’s housing market was in a largely stable condition in 2016. However, it also mentioned indications that London’s significant period of outperformance may be drawing to a close. For the first time in 8 years, annual house price growth in the capital was lower than the UK average, at an increase of 3.7% over the year, compared to 12.2% in 2015. Robert Gardner, Nationwide’s chief economist, explained that developments regarding house prices in 2017 will heavily rely on the wider economy, which is currently surrounded by a greater amount of uncertainty. “Like most forecasters, including the Bank of England, we expect the UK economy to slow modestly next year, which is likely to result in less robust labour market conditions and modestly slower house price growth,” he said. “But we continue to think a small gain, around 2%, is more likely than a decline over 2017 as a whole, since low interest rates are expected to help underpin demand while a shortage

To Contact

of homes on the market will continue to provide support for house prices,” he added. On top of that, Nationwide also revealed in its quarterly data that all regions experienced house price growth in 2016. East Anglia topped the growth list last year with an increase of 10.1% over 12 months. England as a whole saw an increase of 5.1% over the year, Scotland remained relatively steady with a growth of 2.2%, Northern Ireland slowed down with a growth rate of 0.7% and Wales saw an increase at 2.4% annual growth. Director of investment at property crowdfunding platform Property Partner, Rob Weaver, believes that it’s a good thing that house prices are still creeping up despite Brexit, Property Wire reported. “The combination of record low borrowing rates propping up demand and a severe shortage of both housing stock and available homes for sale has meant prices have continued to rise. Predictions for the year ahead are positive although we most probably won’t be seeing London house prices over the short term,” he pointed out. “Overall, property prices are heading upwards slowly but surely despite uncertain times politically and economically. In the long term, the UK housing market will continue to outperform most other investment classes,” he added.

JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR and guests Witt Rebels play Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 26th Januaary 2017 Joanne Shaw Taylor has established herself as the UK’s number one star in the blues rock world. The girl with the big voice from the Black Country has toured extensively around the world and released critically acclaimed albums, gaining a global fanbase and playing alongside some of her musical idols. Joanne’s debut album White Sugar first opened the door and Joanne’s career has since gone stratospheric, with her breaking the notoriously hard-to-crack US market. She beat the stereotypes of her age and gender, gaining acclaim from critics and peers alike. Subsequent albums; Diamonds in the Dirt, Almost Always Never and Songs From The Road followed and saw Joanne’s fan base rise globally. In 2014, Joanne reunited with her White Sugar album producer Jim Gaines and recorded her new studio album in Memphis. That album entitled The Dirty Truth was a return to Joanne’s original sound that mixes rock riffs with blues influences. The album was released in the UK in September 2014 on Joanne’s own independent boutique label Axehouse Records to critical acclaim across the world and has already become her biggest selling album to date. Joanne is a bona fide star with famous fans across the guitar world including Joe Bonamassa (who described her as a Superstar in waiting), Tedeschi

Trucks, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Wilko Johnson, Glenn Hughes and John Mayall to name but a few. In October 2016, Joanne made her live UK television debut on Later with Jools Holland. She performed the title track ‘Dyin To Know’ of new top 20 album Wild, and also Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’ with Jools accompanying on piano. The new album ‘Wild’ is out now.

Fag Break By Jo Watson Davies

Pale faces and puckered mouths; it’s not a good look, The fag break smokers have just lit up. All yellowing fingers and matching teeth, Huddling in the rain out on the street. They’re freezing, they’re wheezing, Burning their wages for what reason? Nicotine’s got them, an unstoppable force. Most rue the day, that’s easy to say, of course. Hindsight’s cruel, it won’t help them now. Willpower will, with help, to show them how To break the cycle, beat the cravings, the chemical fix, Dig deep, you’ll do it, you’ll knock fags for six.

Brave words, but ho, it’s back to your desk, You’ve pacified addiction’s insatiable quest. Bodies muted by nicotine, rampaging through, Satisfied for now, you’ll be back here in the rain, at two. Copyright 2016 © J Watson Davies§

Travel

Focus on family fun ... The start of a New Year and what have you got planned for your travels? Taking the family with multi generations travelling together is a popular idea, especially to celebrate milestone birthdays & anniversaries. Here are a few suggestions. Efteling Theme Park: a super park for mixed generation groups having its own fabulous 4 star hotel steps from the park gate allowing you to come and go as you wish. The gardens are fantastic and there is everything from fairy tale experiences to the most daring of roller coasters! The great plus is that it is the 3rd largest theme park in Europe, offering excellent quality and yet very gentle on your pocket. Travelling overnight by North Sea Ferries it is then just over an hours coach journey from the port, which makes it a comfortable way for any age to travel, although flying is a possibility. Last year we organised a family of 22 guests, spanning four generations, to celebrate a diamond wedding anniversary ~ Every one had a superb time. Lapland to visit Santa: now on sale for this coming December. Natalie & Lynne in the office have booked to travel from Humberside just for the day, they are so excited I am not sure how they will get through the year! Flying from Humberside on Saturday 23rd December, this magical day just before the big event includes a private family meeting with Santa, a reindeer sleigh ride, a taster husky experience and snowmobile adventure. You do not need to worry about the clothing as thermal suits & boots are supplied for your visit. The cost is £499 and if you book quickly there are limited free & half price child places! Longer experiences are also available, for further information please ask. Cruising can be perfect for families too! Enjoying activities and shore excursions to suit yourself, then getting together as a full family each evening to enjoy a meal together and discuss the days events. NCL, Princess, Royal Caribbean, P&O, Cunard plus Carnival all have superb facilities for children whilst still offering enjoyment tailored for the more mature years. Alternatively you could consider a luxury private yacht around the Greek islands (up to 12 guests) or a relaxing canal barge? For a family or a group of friends this is a wonderful experience, you can even design your own itinerary on the Yachts! Both myself & Lynne have personally been on more than 160 ships each plying the oceans, rivers & seas of the world from just 12 guests to 5300 on the worlds biggest ship. London taking in a show, Disney in Paris or Florida, Mauritius with its wonderful beaches & superb quality family & sport resorts. The list goes on…. Let us create your special memories for 2017. We are a full travel agency booking all tour operators and always on call night and day to ensure everything runs smoothly for your well earned break. Marion To Contact

What’s On for Children

Hull & East Riding Mumbler News Active Family Fun in Our Area Happy New Year everyone! As it’s the start of a new year I’ve made the usual list of resolutions to be healthier, to do more exercise myself and make sure my kids are active and doing more sports and activities. Therefore this month’s column is all about things you can do to start a healthier lifestyle for you and your family after the over indulgence of Christmas. Lots of us make resolutions to get healthier and exercise more but for mums with little ones it’s especially hard to fit this in. However there are lots of new fitness classes aimed at, or suitable for new mums. ‘Us Mums’ are fun and effective fitness sessions suitable for pregnant women or new mums, you can bring your baby along with you to the sessions (up to around 1 year old). They’re run by Hull City Councils Healthy Lifestyles team and there are lots of sessions at venues across the city throughout the week, they’re also either free or very cheap. Find them on facebook or ask at your local children’s centre for timetables. Something I’ve got back into since becoming a mum (after playing at school!) is netball. The local league in Hull is really strong with lots of teams to play for, there is a ‘Back to Netball’ session held at St Marys School which welcomes women of all abilities. There are lots of good parks and countryside locally to go for a run or bike ride yourself but it’s often easier to do in a group. Fitmums are another local organisation that provide running groups and sessions for mums at venues across the city. You can also run in the parks with Park Run, they hold 5km runs every Saturday morning at 9am at East Park, Peter Pan Park next to Costello and Humber Bridge Country Park. Another great event for all ages and abilities is GoTri on the 1st Sunday of each month at East Park boating lake. It’s a mini duathlon with a short 1.5km run, a 6km bike ride and another short 1.5km run, all fully marshalled by Humber Triathletes. I’ve added a section to Mumbler under ‘Parents – Fitness’ to list fitness classes suitable for parents. The New Year is also a time for changing routines and starting new hobbies and activities. It’s now Hull 2017 City of Culture year so there are going to be lots of free family events and activities on to try different things. If you want to find some new regular classes for your

children to try, and also get active, there are a variety of new things starting locally: Victoria Dock Village Hall has 2 new classes! Footy Tots teach football to children from age 1/walking to 5 years and already hold classes at Winifred Holtby and Brough, their Victoria Dock classes start in January. Music with Mummy run music classes from birth to 4 years at venues across the city and East Riding, they will be launching a new class at Victoria Dock in January too. A totally new class in our area launches in February – Move With Peppa! These are interactive weekly classes for 16 months to 5 year olds, created using the stories from the TV episodes. They launch at Calvella Dance School in Anlaby and the Darby & Joan Hall in Cottingham with more venues to follow. There is also a new swim school in town, Splash Swim Academy have launched at DW Fitness on Mount Pleasant and run lessons for age 3+. Something I’ve tried with my children recently and loved is the new Bouldering area at Rockcity. This is a safe, padded area with various themes to climb without ropes suitable for children over 2. It’s also a great all body workout for grown-ups too and they are holding specific bouldering for fitness sessions. If you’re a mum to a very new baby, Ragamuffin Yoga are starting a new class ‘Mama and Baby Yoga and Baby Massage from Artlink on Princes Avenue. To find children’s classes and groups near you check out the Weekly Classes/Groups section in Mumbler’s Whats On pages. They’re listed by area and day so you can plan your week! Don’t forget to check out the Mumbler website for all things to do with children locally at www.hullandeastriding.mumbler.co.uk, or follow me on facebook and Twitter @Hull_ER_Mumbler. Have a great month!

New Year New You

Introducing Rachael... There comes a day in our life when we have to be the one who decides ‘Today is the day my life has to change’. Taking baby steps to reduce stress and upset increases our confidence However, this is often easier said than done. Using Skype and Facetime, Rachael has clients all over the world through personalised 1-2-1 sessions. www.couragequeen.com Dear Rachael I spend a lot of time upset and feel really fed up some days. I feel like I wear a mask hiding how I really feel. If anyone asks how I am, I always answer “I’m fine” but I’m not. I have a family who I love dearly and feel guilty that I am so miserable all the time. Any ideas? Yours hopeless Dear Courageous Thankfully your emotions are doing their job and are giving you the heads up that something needs to change for you to be happier. The next step is for you to take action - make a list of everything which is frustrating and upsetting you, no matter how trivial. This can be from having to do housework all weekend, to wondering how you will pay the bills to the fact that you feel overweight and sluggish. Then ask yourself, how can I take responsibility to make this different so that it doesn’t upset or annoy me.

HullMags 4 Top Tips for a Healthy 2017 Cycle to work

Rediscover the truly invigorating and liberating experience of riding a bike, and boost your health in the process. Figures show that about 42% of Britons own a bike. Whether you’re cycling to work, to school, to the shops or just for fun, the humble bicycle is an easy way to get more active. Cycling to work is one of the easiest ways of fitting exercise into your day. It’ll also save you money on petrol or public transport costs. If you don’t have a bike, you may be able to get a cheap bike through the Cycle to Work scheme. If you have an old bike that’s been gathering dust, consider having it serviced at a specialist bike shop to ensure it’s roadworthy before taking it out for a spin.

Stair climbing

If you’re looking for an easy way to add more activity into your day, taking the stairs is a no-brainer. Stair climbing burns more calories per minute than jogging and counts towards your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. Research shows that regularly taking the stairs is good for strong bones, cardiovascular fitness and weight management. It’s also a safe, low-impact exercise that requires no equipment. One of the best parts about stair climbing is how easy it is to fit into daily life.

Skipping

If you’ve not used a skipping rope since your school playground days, then now’s your chance to rediscover how fun and beneficial skipping can be. An excellent way to keep fit, skipping can be done anywhere at any time. Just a few minutes’ skipping training brings a whole range of health benefits, including heart and lung fitness, strong bones, balance and flexibility. The average person will burn up to 200 calories during 15 minutes of skipping. Skipping is a strenuous exercise, so start slowly. Try skipping for 20-30 seconds, marching on the spot for 30 seconds, and then repeat. As your fitness improves, you can increase the time you skip for. Once you have perfected the basic moves, make it more interesting by trying different jumps.

Walk everywhere

Walking is underrated as a form of exercise, but it’s one of the easiest ways to get more activity into your day, lose weight and become healthier. Research shows that people who fit moderate activity, such as walking, into their daily life burn more energy than those who make weekly visits to the gym. Try to fit walking into your routine by ditching the car for short journeys, walking all or part of your journey to work, getting off the bus or train one stop early, and planning longer walks at the weekends. To reap the health benefits, aim to walk 10,000 steps a day, which can burn up to 400 calories. To keep track of your walking, use a pedometer.

If you feel overwhelmed with this task, then have the courage to ask for help. www.letstalkhull.org.uk can offer support as well as MIND who are an excellent charity. Remember if you do nothing, then nothing will change. You do have the power to take control of your life.

Gardening

January Gardening There’s always something to be doing in the garden, whether it’s pruning, tidying or sowing, so we’ve put together our top gardening tasks for January. Cold Weather Update With warnings of a cold snap you may be concerned that some of your garden plants, which have shown signs of growth, may be damaged. Here is some advice from our horticultural team on how to best protect your plants. Even in mild areas, tender plants that cannot be left outside with protection should really be taken into the greenhouse or conservatory when there is risk of a cold snap. In cold areas, you are best moving things inside much earlier, in the autumn. Any tender lants that are being over wintered outdoors need protective straw or fleece. In cold spells, protect non frost-proof containers (terracotta pots for example) with bubble wrap, hessian or fleece, to prevent them cracking. Grouping the pots close to a south-facing wall may provide additional protection to the most vulnerable ones. Protect newly planted trees, hedges and shrubs from cold winds and frosts, which can loosen and lift the roots. Gently re-firm them in if you notice this problem, and erect a temporary netting windbreak if there is no natural shelter. Thick dry mulches will protect the roots from cold, and branches can be covered with fleece, or even packed with dry straw and then covered with fleece, for tender plants. A wooden frame with clear polythene stretched over it does a similar job for evergreens without blocking the light, but don’t let the polythene touch the leaves, as condensation could freeze or cause rots. If you find that some plants are damaged by frosts etc, then they may well need a bit of a boost when they regrow in spring. We recommend mulching with compost and using fertiliser such as Incredibloom etc as this will help the plants when they need it. In the flower garden

l Prune your Wisteria plant now, cutting back summer side-shoots

to 2 or 3 buds.

l Prune rose bushes now whilst they are dormant. Cut back to just above a bud and remove any crossing or dead branches.

l You can plant bare root roses now in a sunny position for spectacular summer colour.

l If your garden is looking a bit bare try growing a winter-flowering l l l l l l

evergreen Clematis such as ‘Winter Beauty’. To find out how to prune Clematis take a look at our Clematis pruning guide. For a more unusual bare-root plant to add to your borders now, try growing Alstroemeria (Peruvian Lily). Cut back the old foliage from ornamental grasses before growth begins - clip them to within a few centimetres of the ground. Cut down the old stems of perennial plants like Sedum - be careful of any new growth. Remove old Hellebore leaves to make the new blooms more visible as they emerge this spring. Cut back damaged, diseased and the oldest stems of brightly coloured willows, and thin overcrowded stems. Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed.

Gardening In the vegetable garden

l Harvest parsnips and leeks. l If you’d like to grow early peas, place a cloche over the soil to let it warm up for a few weeks prior to sowing.

l While you’re waiting for the weather to warm up, try growing

your own mushrooms using one of our mushroom kits indoors.

l Start chitting (sprouting) early potatoes - stand them on end in a

module tray or egg box and place in a bright cool frost-free place

l You can start growing potatoes in containers under cover for

a very early crop ( Charlotte potatoes are a good variety for this). Potato Patio Planters are ideal for growing early potatoes in small spaces. l If your greenhouse is unheated, protect your potato grow bags with horticultural fleece on cold nights. l Remove yellowing leaves from your winter brassicas as they are no use to the plant and may harbour pests and diseases. Flowers and containers Put bark chips around hellebores to protect the delicate blooms from rain splashes and cut off any leaves with black spots on them this is a fungal disease and not to be tolerated! Bring in any tender plants that are not already in shelter. Bulbs - they should really be planted already, but if you haven’t quite got around to it, put them in the ground as soon as you can. It’s not exactly text book stuff, but they will probably come up and flower in the spring, even if a little later than normal - worth a go! Containers Repetitive, we know, but do raise containers onto feet or bricks to protect them from wet and cold and lag them with bubble wrap, hessian or fleece if not frost proof. In really cold weather even hardy plants may need protecting so hunt out any insulating material. Remove debris regularly to prevent pests from taking up residence and brighten up dull pots and containers with winter pansies and winter flowering heathers.

So here we are in January within the UK City of Culture and Hull City perform the pantomime act. Mike Phelan the one man prepared to manage Hull City in August loses his job for daring to ask for money to strengthen the team.

East Stand Views...

So one game into 2017 and Phelan and his coaching team have been sacked. The stats show we a bottom of the league and only picked up six points since the end of August but realistically we are probably not good enough. City began with a squad of thirteen, injuries and suspensions have depleted the team, none of the August signings have really boosted the team and there is both a lack of Premier League quality and squad depth in both the forwards and fullbacks. Phelan’s reign began well with the thirteen fit players but the bubble burst with games against the top sides and it has been a struggle since September. Ultra defensive games such as Middlesbrough didn’t help but a change of formation with the return of wing backs brought far better performances from mid December but alas points were squandered when we were on top of these games and the knives were out for Mike Phelan.

Every Cloud has a Silva lining! As things appear the day after the sacking we have appointed a Portuguese coach. Marco Silva. Silva has been successful in both Portugal and Greece winning trophies and taking teams into European competitions. There are many questions however, such as how will he cope at a struggling Premier League side, will he have a transfer budget, will he bring in a support team of coaches, how good is his English and more importantly how

To Contact

will Silva get on with the Allams? Does he know English players to boost the squad or would any newcomers arrive from Portugal without experience of this league as well. There is still half a season left so relegation is no means a certainty, not many would bet against it but maybe the new man can perform a miracle.

“And more importantly how will Silva get on with the Allams”

Seven wins are needed so a massive improvement is required. I’m struggling to see this to be honest but if the defence is tightened, decent forwards attracted and players like Mason and Henrickson start to perform who knows? The big question is will the Allams ever leave? You cannot see anyone offering £130 million and they would be lucky to be offered £50 million nowadays.

The clubs only real attraction to foreign investors is Premier League kudos and a big Sky tv deal. Neither look likely in the next six months so what happens next? The club took up a clause in the contracts of several key players such as Robert Snodgrass, Andy Robertson and Abel Hernandez to secure these players for a further twelve months so they would not walk away for nothing in June or they had to decide whether to accept any offers on transfer deadline day. Will the club cash in on these assets in January or sell them off in the summer? Some fans feel that the owners will just pocket the Sky money and sell off players but surely selling the club on as a Premier League club would have generated more cash? They rejected the offers on the table and now reality is sinking in, sack the manager, hope for a miracle and try to stay up. They could have sold the club six months ago when attractive to investors but now is open to question if anyone will buy us unless it is for a fraction of the current value placed on the club but with the Sky money and transfer sales paying off the Allams. You never know we might have new owners, be unbeaten under Marco Silva and in the League Cup final by the next column. It is the start of 2017 so we need to be optimistic.

Words by Woody Mellor

One win in sixteen was another important consideration but just like Steve Bruce money and support from the Allam family are hard to acquire. Phelan’s cause hasn’t been helped by pantomime defending and refereeing over recent weeks. West Ham’s dubious penalty causing defeat at the Olympic Stadium, Robertson’s daft challenge which gave Manchester City the lead through a penalty and poor defending from corners and crosses against Everton and West Brom. Ten points could have been taken from these games from better defending and taking advantage of a multitude of chances which were frittered away,

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

New Year, New You!

I love New Year’s resolutions. It’s a great time of year to really look at your life and see what you could do better. This year I am pledging to do more exercise and to eat more healthily. I sometimes forget to eat during the day if I’m too busy, which clearly isn’t good for me, so I have a plan to make myself a packed lunch every day so I don’t have to stop to prepare something or pop to the shop for a sandwich if I don’t have time. I am also putting aside specific times during the week for keeping fit. I am starting with 3 days a week and seeing how that goes and will increase the time if I can! What are you going to do? It can be absolutely anything. The main thing is to not set yourself up for failure. Think of something manageable that you can easily slot into your week. It might be spending more time with your family (which is always on my agenda!) or just doing something every week that helps someone else. Whatever it is, good luck!

City of Culture is finally here!

Well, we’ve been waiting and waiting, but it’s finally here. I am so excited about Hull’s year as UK City of Culture. It’s going to bring so many people to our region who will be spending money in local businesses and staying in our hotels and B&Bs. They will get the opportunity to see everything good about Hull and East Yorkshire and experience the beauty of the surrounding countryside and coastline. I know the organising committee has been hard at work to create some wonderful memories for everyone. So don’t forget to get involved, take the opportunity to see the cultural highlights of the city and give a warm welcome to our visitors, who will hopefully come back time and time again once they see what’s here and meet all you wonderful people! You can do and be anything you want! I found this great quote and thought I’d share it with you at the beginning of 2017. It’s from multi award-winning country singer and songwriter Brad Paisley. “Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one!”
