Rural Fair Share! When we think of the countryside, we tend to conjure images of prosperous market towns and rolling green fields. However this idea of a rural idyll is a dangerous misconception. There are in fact pockets of real deprivation in our region. Take Withernsea. In 2010, it was ranked among the 10% most deprived areas in England. Towns like Withernsea are not uncommon in rural England. Nowhere are the challenges of Britain’s ageing population more acute than in the countryside. In our constituency, almost 30,000 people are aged 60 or above, compared to the national average of just 8,527 people. The effect is a higher need for services such as social care. On average, people in rural areas earn £4,600 less than those in cities. From these lower wages, rural residents pay higher rates of council tax – on average £81 more per person per year. The Government then gives the council a smaller grant to fund their services. This sees urban areas get on average 45% more funding per person than rural councils.

This means that residents in rural areas, like ours, pay greater levels of tax out of lower wages to receive fewer services. In short, we are subsidising better services for higher earners in cities. Strong local services are needed to meet the challenges of an older, often deprived population in rural areas. Yet local government is not given its fair share of the resources to tackle them. Our councils provide social housing, care homes for the elderly, and local transportation. We rely on local services every day, especially the most vulnerable in society. I lead the Rural Fair Share campaign in Parliament. We are a crossparty group of over a hundred MPs who want to see more equitable funding for rural council services.
In 2012, we persuaded the Coalition Government to accept that this situation was unfair and ministers agreed to give rural councils an extra £250 million. There’s still a shortfall of £130 million outstanding from 2012, and this year we are asking for them finally to deliver this cash. We aren’t asking for more money for local government overall. The Government must keep finding savings so that we live within our means. The money must be redistributed within the existing pot. The Government has made a good start. The additional £15.5 million that the Government gave to rural councils last year is a welcome recognition of the unfairness of this settlement. However I would like to see the Government show much greater ambition in delivering the fair funding which rural areas need. I’ll be making the case in Parliament that this is the year to give rural councils a fair share. Minding the Minster
A Christian Christmas If any Beverley residents ever pop in to the Minster for a special events then it’s likely to be during the next few weeks. While we do get a few hundred coming to services, and several hundred local school children being escorted to and around the building for various lessons through the year, we get thousands of Beverlonians visiting us in December. It’s not surprising: Beverley Minster is one of the key venues to celebrate a Christian Christmas in the town and, due to our size, we host many different carol services on behalf of a wide number of schools, groups and organisations. We host so many in fact that we move our normal Sunday morning communion services to a temporary altar in front of the special staging we have to put in place for much of December.
Then, of course, we also have concerts and our own seasonal services, which attract hundreds of occasional worshippers: especially the two Crib Services, plus Nine Lessons and Carols and Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. The choirs and all our volunteers will be working extra hard to make everything look and sound perfect, for the whole month. Plus there’s the Christmas Tree Festival, a Shopper’s Lunch, Virger tours and much, much more – in fact there’s so much going on you need to see our What’s On leaflet or check the website (beverleyminster.org.uk) to keep up with it all. Gig of The Month
Roamin’ Jasmine from New Orleans booked to play Beverley gig. The Roamin’ Jasmine play an eclectic mix of 1920’s classic jazz,1950’s R’n’B and vintage Calypso. The gig is at the Beverley Arms Hotel on December 11th at 7.30pm. Forged out of the lively street music scene in the French Quarter of New Orleans, the members of the Roamin’ Jasmine found one another busking under the swampy Louisiana sun, along the banks of the Mississippi, or after hours in storefronts on Royal, Frenchmen and Decatur Streets. Inspired by the city’s history of ethnic and musical diversity, and fresh out of music school at University of Miami’s, bassist, vocalist, and bandleader Taylor Smith began to collect some of his favorite old blues, jazz, and country tunes, while also composing some of his own songs. Arranging this collection for a six piece jazz ensemble and giving them a healthy dose of New Orleans flavor, he decided to share his work with some like-minded

colleagues, and bring it to the streets of New Orleans. The Roamin’ Jasmine repertoire explores 1920’s era speakeasy blues, vintage Calypso from Trinidad, seminal 1950’s New Orleans Rhythm & Blues, and original compositions, all set to traditional jazz instrumentation with original arrangements. Through polyphonic collective improvisation inherent in their new homeland of New Orleans, the Roamin’ Jasmine hold true to a great New Orleans jazz tradition while participating in its evolution with undertones of different eras and places. 12 ways to keep the burglars out of your home this Christmas
It might sound like the plot of nineties’ Christmas classic Home Alone, but the festive season – with its visits to family and friends and, of course, all those presents – attracts burglars to homes. Research from Halifax Home Insurance has shown a 25% increase in December theft claims, with an average of nearly 50 claims made each day over the Christmas period. So, there’s never a better time to step up your home security – and for the 12 days of Christmas, here are our 12 festive security tips. 1) Even if you don’t have children to hide presents from, make sure criminals can’t see them through your windows and doors by hiding them in cupboards and under beds. 2) If you’re going away for Christmas, make the house look lived in. Turning on lights when no one’s at home in winter can deter burglars. You can buy timers that will turn lights on automatically, or just ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property, open and close curtains and put lights on. 3) If you’re going away, ask a neighbour to park their car in your driveway

to make it look like someone’s home. 4) Keep an eye on any suspicious behaviour in the neighbourhood. Security cameras for inside and outside the home can enhance your home security and peace of mind, but as they’re not within everyone’s budget, being vigilant has to be the next best thing. 5) Make sure all windows and doors are firmly shut and locked when leaving home. Leaving an entry path slightly open is a temptation for a burglar. 6) Don’t leave notes for couriers saying no one’s in. Make sure you’ve sent instructions about where to leave parcels if you are out. 7) Make sure all packaging is ripped up and buried in bins, so criminals can’t easily see what’s been added to an already festive-filled house. 8) Don’t openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in the front window so it’s easily visible from the street. It can be tempting for criminals to smash the window and grab wrapped packages. 9) Make sure your outside lights aren’t burning 24 hours a day, and newspapers or advertising flyers aren’t piled up through your letterbox. Again, you might need to ask a neighbour to collect your post and free papers if you go away. 10) Burglars know to look for the hidden door key near the front entrance. Don’t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead, give the spare key to a trusted neighbour. 11) Burglars prefer to enter through unlocked doors or windows, so an electricity extension cord running through an open window to exterior Christmas lights can be an open invitation. Hire an electrician to install an inexpensive exterior outlet for festive outdoor lights. 12) Make sure your family name isn’t visible outside your house, like on a mailbox. Criminals can get your number from directory enquiries and call your home to confirm there’s no one in. And don’t leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like “We’re away skiing for Christmas, please leave a message.”

HANDBELL RINGERS CHIME IN WITH NOTES FROM THE PAST Records relating to the Beverley Town Handbell Ringers have been deposited recently with the East Riding Archives at the Treasure House in Beverley. They provide information about the early history of the group which was formed in 1981 and performed at a number of local events. The early minutes also record the fund raising activities of members. These included concerts and a scheme for supporters to ‘adopt a bell’ to be engraved with their name. The money raised meant that the group could purchase a new set of handbells from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London in 1983. The Beverley Town Handbell Ringers then built on their early success and had a full calendar of performances at concerts and public events each year. Scrapbooks and photograph albums in the collection show members taking part in competitions and events at various places in Yorkshire. Handbell ringing was at one time a common form of playing music, particularly in northern England, although its popularity declined after the First World War. This was later followed by a revival of interest and the formation of a
national society in 1967 to promote the art. Senior Archivist Sarah Acton said, “These records show how a group of individuals joined together to set up an organisation based on a common interest and then developed this by working with their local community.” She added “We would like more local societies to deposit records with us as they are popular with researchers and add a more personal element to the official records that we hold.” The Archives Service holds records permanently for current and future research so items do not have to be particularly old at the time of deposit. They also collect local societies’ newsletters and journals so that is another way that local groups can become part of their local archive. Christmas in and around Beverley Christmas is firmly on its way and there are lots of family events happening in and around Beverley to get you in the festive spirit. The Hull & East Riding Mumbler is a website for local parents (grandparents and carers) that list’s all things to do with babies and children in our area from playgroups and classes to days out and family events. There are lots of Christmas events listed on it, here’s a selection: Places to see Santa: Most garden centres have opened grottos and have huge Christmas displays. Southwood Garden Centre in Cottingham has a lovely grotto, winter wonderland and live reindeer. It is also worth a trip across the bridge to Brigg Garden Centre to see their grotto, musical polar bears, live reindeer and (not festive at all) hidden dinosaurs! Shopping centre grottos are good to combine Christmas shopping with a visit to Santa. In Hull, Princes Quay has a huge castle this year filling the lower deck, I tried this one and the Santa was very realistic and the gift high quality. Hornsea Freeport also have a grotto along with free Christmas craft activities on weekends. A few of our local country houses have Santa appearances too. Burnby Hall in Pocklington has fantastic gardens to explore with little ones, they’re having ‘Santa Sunday’ on 6th December with lots of Christmas activities running alongside the grotto. Burton Agnes have the house open and decorated for Christmas and children can meet Santa by the fireside every Sunday. For cold, wet days The Deep is always a good option.

Thursford Christmas Spectacular... As we are in the season for festive shows & pantomimes this is a great opportunity to introduce you to Thursford’s Christmas Spectacular. You may well wonder why 50 coaches a day would be travelling around the little roads of Norfolk from mid November through to Christmas Eve. Well the answer is Thursford’s amazing extravaganza comprising of 130 professional performers on a stage 120 feet wide! This show which truly cannot be fully described is a variety show offering something for ever person in the audience. The show last for 3 hours and has a short interval, the time goes by very quickly the show is an absolute delight from start to finish and regulars say each year is better. This year one of my favourite parts was a quartet singing a Christmas Carol made up of individual lines from many carols linked together, difficult and clever yet pulled off perfectly. The musicians played the most fabulous arrangements whilst the dancing or the comedian was a high light for many guests. There is always acrobatics and juggling to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. Last year there was a slack rope walker and she was just unbelievable. No one should leave before the finale but I would not spoil this sight for anyone visiting for the first time The auditorium seats over 1400 guests and the decorations are a spectacle alone both inside and outside as you arrive. Children under the age of 12 are not allowed but if you live locally they have created a Winter Wonderland set around the traction engines of the museum (open during the summer months). This attraction reminds me of its a Small World at Disney. As a ticket holder for the show you are allowed to enter for a small supplement without children. We always ensure that guests arrive in good to take this in along with time for shopping in the Christmas stores on site. 2016 is the 40th anniversary of the show and I am sure this will be extra special. Our departures are almost full for 2016, we offer the very best seats in the house and stay for 1 night as it is to far away to visit comfortably in a day. We include a matinee show a super dinner and overnight stay in a very nice hotel. The next day after an English Breakfast we visit to Springfields in Spalding for a spot of retail therapy. Christmas stress: How to deal with festive anxiety. As the festive season approaches it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of Christmas. But for many people the holiday season can be a major source of anxiety
From concerns about Christmas budgeting to finding yourself anticipating family disputes, here are some ways you can alleviate your festive woes and enjoy a more relaxed Christmas time. Money worries Christmas can send your household and credit card bills sky rocketing. With presents, festive food and Christmas parties to keep up with it feels almost impossible to cut costs.

Before you dig deep into your savings or over draft, try and work out what you really NEED to buy over the festive season. Can you come to an agreement to take a break from Christmas gifts? Or plan a soiree in your own home to avoid expensive restaurants? Or why not indulge in Secret Santa? Try and plan ahead for next year if you’re worried about money stresses. Put a bit of money in a savings account specifically for Christmas time that you can your family can all contribute to. Family problems Pressures from TV shows and films make Christmas seem like an idyllic family time. The truth is that there will inevitably be fall outs, lets face it how often do you spend THAT much time with all your family members? If you have an unresolved issue with a particular family member, try and make a promise to not discuss it over Christmas lunch and buffer yourselves with other family members. Maybe your new year’s resolution can be to talk things through, but over Christmas try not to confront issues so directly. Focusing on children is a great way to set your priorities when it comes to family quarrels, especially if you and your partner have split up. Enable their happiness even if it does mean enduring a bit of awkwardness. Also try not to over indulge on alcohol. A few shandies in and you might end up saying something that you regret.
Loneliness Though Christmas is often perceived as a happy time, for many people it can be a period of immense loneliness. Not everyone spends Christmas with loved ones, but if you find yourself planning a Christmas dinner for one there are ways you can combat loneliness. Volunteer for a soup kitchen or animal shelter on Christmas day. This way you can be around others AND feel like you’ve made a difference. If you’re worried about a loved one or even a neighbour being lonely at Christmas make sure you reach out to them. A friendly phone call can be a priceless gift over the festive period. Time management If you’re worried about getting everything done in time for Christmas try and organise your time appropriately. Make a time table of ‘deadlines’ that you need to have completed tasks for e.g. buying presents, sending gifts abroad, ordering items online and buying your big Christmas food shop. You can also save money by being more prepared. This will calm your Crimbo nerves by a huge amount. Staying healthy If there’s a way to put a downer on Christmas it’s getting poorly. Make sure you eat healthily and take care of yourself in the lead up to Christmas morning. Try and steer away from all the boozy nights on offer and stock up on protein-rich foods and Vitamin C. Of course we all want to spoil our pets at this time of year but remember to be a little careful as general over-indulgence in unfamiliar foods or fatty gravies can cause gastroenteritis.
Decoration Dangers Be sure to keep fairy lights away from all pets, especially small furries who like to chew. Chewing through cables can end up in a nasty electric shock! Tinsel, ribbon and wrapping are appealing to play with but if swallowed can cause a blockage in the intestine.
Stranger Danger! Whilst many of our pets love visitors, some find strangers in the house very stressful so make sure they have somewhere quiet in the house they can escape to. If you are particularly concerned for your pet, talk to your vet about plug-in diffusers which emit calming pheromones to help them cope.

BEVERLEY AS A SOURCE OF INNOVATION : NEW EXHIBITION IN THE GUILDHALL A new exhibition which has just opened in the Beverley Community Museum in the Guildhall highlights the role that several of the town’s industries have played in industrial innovation and creativity. The exhibition looks at Armstrong Patents, Deans, Cherry’s Pump Works, Crosskill’s Iron Works and Akrill’s gun manufactory. Speed awareness courses could ‘invalidate insurance’ New questions raised over police links to companies offering speed awareness courses, as it emerges motorists could be risking huge problems if they fail to tell insurers about courses. Police are conning motorists over speed awareness courses by failing to make clear how drivers could inadvertently leave themselves uninsured by taking part, campaigners have said. Insurers have admitted they treat speed awareness courses the same as penalty points and it is now feared that failing to declare taking part in course could invalidate your policy. technology in the design of the Nissan IDS concept.” The courses, which cost between £80 and £150, allow drivers to avoid penalty points on their licences. Ian Belchamber, a campaigner who runs an anti-speed camera campaign in Dorset, said: “The police’s actions are potentially resulting in people driving uninsured because they haven’t told motorists to tell their insurers about the speed awareness course. “I would make sure your insurer knows you’ve been on a course regardless of whether they specifically ask for that information. “If you are involved in an accident and the insurer looks into your history and sees you’ve been on a speeding course they could say ‘You didn’t tell us about this, you’re not covered’.” Tim Ryan, deputy chairman of the British Insurance Brokers’ Association, has confirmed insurers are “perfectly entitled” to hike the premiums of drivers who have attended a course. “Insurers rightly increase premiums for people attending speed-awareness courses,” he said earlier this year. “They have still broken the law on the road but are just taking their medicine differently. “Drivers might avoid penalty points on their licence but car premiums could still leap significantly, which insurers are perfectly entitled to do.”

Ten Top Tips to make Your New Year’s Resolution a Success. Most of us will make a New Year’s resolution - maybe to lose weight, quit smoking or drink less - but only one in 10 of us will achieve our goal. Psychologists have found we’re more likely to succeed if we break our resolution into smaller goals that are specific, measurable and timebased. Professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire, tracked 5,000 people as they attempted to achieve their New Year’s resolutions. His team found that those who failed tended not to have a plan, which made their resolution soon feel like a mountain to climb. Some focused too much on the downside of
not achieveing their goal, adopted role models, fantasised about their goal or relied on will power alone. “Many of these ideas are frequently recommended by self-help experts but our results suggest that they simply don’t work,” says Prof Wiseman. “If you are trying to lose weight, it’s not enough to stick a picture of a model on your fridge or fantasise about being slimmer.” He said the 10% of participants in the study who had achieved their target broke their goal into smaller goals & felt a sense of achievement when they achieved these.

Don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to think about your resolution and instead take some time out a few days before and reflect upon what you really want to achieve. 3. Avoid previous resolutions. Deciding to revisit a past resolution sets you up for frustration and disappointment. 4. Don’t run with the crowd and go with the usual resolutions. Instead think about what you really want. 5. Break your goal into a series of steps, focusing on creating sub-goals that are concrete, measurable and time-based. 6. Tell your friends and family about your goals. You’re more likely to get support and want to
avoid failure. 7. Regularly remind yourself of the benefits associated with achieving your goals by creating a checklist of how life would be better once you obtain your aim. 8. Give yourself a small reward whenever you achieve a sub-goal, thus maintaining motivation and a sense of progress. 9. Make your plans and progress concrete by keeping a handwritten journal, completing a computer spreadsheet or covering a notice board with graphs or pictures. 10. Expect to revert to your old habits from time to time. Treat any failure as a temporary setback rather than a reason to give up altogether.

Gardening in December General tasks and garden maintenance
Carry on digging over beds and borders and incorporate as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for next year, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Protect pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation around them. Bubble wrap is ideal and probably in plentiful supply if you are ordering Christmas presents over the internet! Clear paths of moss and lichen, treat timber with preservative, repair fences, check sheds and walls (but avoid any concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses (that bubble wrap again!) and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating bill. Clean and repair your garden tools and clock the lawn mower in for a service. New tools are always a welcome present, as are new gardening gloves... especially good quality ones.
Clear debris - this is vital to prevent slugs and snails from setting up home in those lovely warm and damp conditions! However, a plea for wildlife... An artless pile of sticks and logs will make a wonderful ‘des res’ for hibernating hedgehogs and the like, so please don’t be too ferocious on the tidying front. Make leaf mould out of fallen leaves - they will rot down into fantastically fertile matter after a year (2 for oak leaves). Store wet leaves (they must be wet to rot) in large black plastic sacks forked with holes or piled into a chicken wire container or similar. Failing that, add them to the compost heap. Gardening Take care not to let leaves accumulate around alpines - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty compost to encourage regrowth.
Trees, shrubs and climbers
From now until March is the ideal time to plant bare rooted deciduous hedging - the most economical way to establish a hedge. Beech and hornbeam (similar to beech but more suitable for heavy soils) both keep their leaves over the winter and are therefore good for screening, whilst hawthorn is the ‘country classic’ - perfect for a natural looking yet almost impenetrable barrier. Prepare a trench, preferably a week or so before planting to give the soil a chance to settle. Wait until the ground is neither

sodden nor frozen and plant away - it’s worth waiting for the right conditions; your plants will be perfectly happy sitting in the pots of compost they came in for weeks!
Flowers and containers
Put bark chips around hellebores to protect the delicate blooms from rain splashes and cut off any leaves with black spots on them - this is a fungal disease and not to be tolerated! Bring in any tender plants that are not already in shelter. Bulbs - they should really be planted already, but if you haven’t quite got around to it, put them in the ground as soon as you can. It’s not exactly text book stuff, but they will probably come up and flower in the spring, even if a little later than normal worth a go! Continued on Page 44

Fruit trees and bushes
Remove debris regularly to prevent pests from taking up residence and brighten up dull pots and containers with winter pansies and winter flowering heathers.
Prune established apple and pear trees (not those grown against a wall) - keep the centre of the tree fairly open to allow air to circulate freely which helps avoid disease. Ensure any crossing and rubbing branches are cut out - open wounds will only encourage disease. If you are unsure about how to prune, please ask for advice at the garden centre.
Repetitive, we know, but do raise containers onto feet or bricks to protect them from wet and cold and lag them with bubble wrap, hessian or fleece if not frost proof. In really cold weather even hardy plants may need protecting so hunt out any insulating material.
Lawns
If the weather allows, repair holes and tatty patches in your lawn. If it is waterlogged, as most will be after the November deluges, or even frozen try and avoid walking on it - damage is easily inflicted!
Plant fruit trees and bushes as long as the soil is neither too wet nor frozen.

Vegetables
Harvest leeks, Brussels sprouts (from the bottom upwards), carrots, parsnips (after a frost) and winter cabbages. Earth up winter brassicas to help protect them from wind - if your sprouts are very tall it will pay to cane them. Remove yellow leaves as these encourage fungal disease.

I recently did a report for Calendar about a café in Hull which has recently opened and has one of the most fantastic ideas I have seen or heard of in a long time. It’s called Inspire Café and you can find it on George Street. Basically, when you go in and order your hot meal and/or buy a cup of tea or coffee you can also buy a “pending” meal or drink which will then be offered to a homeless person. What a great initiative. It’s so simple yet so important for those who are in desperate need. As the cold weather is upon us, I think we should all try to take a trip in and do something that will help people far less fortunate than ourselves.
IS CHRISTMAS STRESSFUL? Yes the festive season is upon us – and it can often be a stressful time – making sure you have bought all the presents you need, you’ve bought enough food and let’s not forget the stress that can often come with visiting family members! But don’t forget to take a step back. Christmas should be less about presents and buying “stuff” and more about taking the time to spend with your children, your parents (if you’re still lucky enough to have them with you), your siblings and any other family members you’re close to. And if there is someone who is estranged, and you can’t even remember why you don’t speak anymore, perhaps now is a good time to try to reconnect. I also think it’s important to check on any elderly neighbours or friends you have. How are they spending the festive season? Do they need help? Do they want to come to your house for Christmas dinner? Christmas shouldn’t be a stressful season. It should be a time of great love and joy – so try to help yourself and others around you by not having a meltdown! Don’t worry if everything isn’t perfect – it’s not the end of the world. It’s far more important to spend quality time with your children and family.
