Bursaries and Partnerships Impact Report

Jan 2025-Jan 2026

Welcome to our third Impact Report!

In these pages we will focus on Philanthropy at NHEHS during the last 12 months to update you on the progress of our Bursary Appeal, outline our ambitions for the future, and tell you more about how our School Partnerships programme is developing.

2025 was the most exciting year for philanthropy in the history of our School.

Our final one of our three 150th Anniversary bursaries - the OGA Alumnae 150th Bursary - reached its target! This means another talented, yet disadvantaged, girl in our local community will be able to come to NHEHS next September on a fully funded bursary!

Thank you to every one of you who gave your time, talent and treasure to ensure the ambitions of our 150th Anniversary campaign came to fruition.

We are greatly indebted to all our current and former pupils, staff and parents who have made this happen, and the many who provide the reassurance that support will continue as long as it is required by giving regularly.

As I reflect on a journey that began in October 2022, I would like to thank in particular our Chair of Governors - Charlie Altman, our Campaign Ambassador - Angellica Bell, our former Heads, the Parents’ Guild and the OGA Committee, and the many former bursary award holders who shared with us their personal stories. I would also like to pay particular tribute to our major donors, including those since sadly deceased.

Our philanthropy is now leading the way across the other GDST schools as they too enter their 150 year celebrations: all of us aiming to ensure that more young women can learn without limits.

Our long term goal has always been to embed bursary-giving deep in our culture so that we can nurture more talent and play an even more significant role in social mobility in our local area.

The number of girls needing financial support to come here is sadly increasing, not decreasing, and maintaining the diversity of our pupil body, of which we are all so proud, is increasingly challenging.

Now that all three of our 150th anniversary fundraising goals have been met, we have reflected on what is achievable in the future. While over two-thirds of the funds raised have come in since our Appeal launched in 2022, the first donation on which it relied was made in 1986. We simply can’t wait another forty years before we can offer an additional young woman a fully funded place.

While our Leavers’ Appeal which fundraises for Sixth Form bursaries will continue as it is, to accelerate our impact, we have decided to move away from running two separate Year 7+ bursary campaigns, the OGA Alumnae Appeal and the Parents’ Appeal.

Going forward, we will combine these two campaigns into a single, unified NHEHS Bursary Appeal which we are asking our entire community to support.

By channelling our resources in this way, and, provided we maintain and grow our support across all groups, we will be able to create the next NHEHS full Senior School bursary much faster. Everyone makes a difference.

Thank you for your support. We hope you enjoy reading our Impact Report.

Parent Pay - In these challenging times, we are continually looking at ways to simplify and extend the ways by which a parent may, if they wish, support this cause. To this end, in late November we added the option to make a oneoff donation via Parent Pay, the platform by which parents pay for extras, from school lunches to school trips. Early signs are promising with twelve donations in the first couple of months, most of these from first-time donors.

Payroll Giving pledges

Payroll giving is a tax efficient way of regular giving, making charitable donations go further while costing the donor less; for example, a donation of £20 a month would cost a 40% taxpayer £12 a month, and a 45% taxpayer £11 a month

Who benefits? Everyone!

Over 340 young women have been awarded bursaries which enabled them to attend NHEHS. They have gone on to be lawyers, doctors, scientists, financiers, entrepreneurs, teachers, politicians, journalists, to name just a few. Our pupils, staff, and parents, current and former, aspire for girls to learn without limits, so that they can live lives without limits. We appreciate that diversity strengthens our culture by promoting tolerance and fostering understanding between people from different backgrounds. Our community is one where shared experience at school brings meaningful connections among people from different walks of life. All our students leave us world-ready, and ambitious to use their hearts and minds to shape a better future.

Grateful for having had the opportunity and eager to use their experience to make a positive difference, here some of our most recent bursary award holders kindly share their thoughts in order to inspire you to enable more young women to benefit as they have.

A number of our families, whose daughters moved on at the end of the academic year 2024/2025, maintained the tradition of gifting their deposit to enable, in the future, another disadvantaged young woman to be part of our Sixth Form.

Our A Level students celebrated an outstanding set of results with 24% of entries graded at A*, 62% graded A* or A, and 91% A* to B. Well done, all!

Particular congratulations to our 100% bursary award holders who between them achieved 1 A*, 6 As and 4 Bs, and one who is now reading Economics at the University of Cambridge!

‘The Parents’ Guild came in to talk about their careers and it was their confidence that struck me so deeply. I’d never seen parents talk about their careers. It was a great opportunity for me to watch and learn. I thought if I can adopt their attitude, I am sure I can get to where I want to be.’

Erin: ‘I had a wonderful 7 years at NHEHS, better than I ever thought possible. I learnt all my subjects from incredible teachers, who taught with passion and dedication and supported me every step of the way. I was told to aim high and work hard to achieve my dreams.’

Nirupama: ‘I’m here because someone chose to give. And that decision has shaped who I am today and who I hope to become.’

Our Partnerships

A Commitment to Meaningful Partnerships

Our Partnerships Programme is a testament to our commitment to enriching education while fostering meaningful relationships within the community. Many of our initiatives are student-led, helping participants develop confidence, knowledge, and skills beyond the classroom.

Reflecting on the impact of these programmes, Hayley Silvester, Assistant Head, shared: “Developing meaningful partnership opportunities beyond the walls of NHEHS has a significant impact. In a tech-driven world that has the potential to be increasingly insular, it has never been more important to collaborate with others and to share experiences. We are proud of the partnerships programme that we offer.”

Through continued collaboration, we look forward to expanding these initiatives, creating even more opportunities for students to learn, inspire, and connect.

NHEHS is actively engaged in several impactful partnership programmes, fostering educational enrichment and strengthening community ties.

BUDS Programme

In 2025 we celebrated the fourth year of our BUDS programme (Building Understanding, Developing Skills), a partnership with our local primary schools. This programme is designed to enrich learning beyond the classroom through a mixture of Creative Thinking, Public Speaking/Drama, and STEM workshops. These sessions, held on a Saturday in the Spring term, help pupils build vital soft skills such as creative problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and self-expression.

Each year, we invite our primary schools to nominate students who they feel would most benefit from the enrichment programme, and this year our dedicated team of NHEHS staff and volunteer Sixth Form students were delighted to welcome 51 Year 5 students from 11 local primary schools. The feedback from the parents and staff at the primary schools remains overwhelmingly positive.

Two parents of Year 5 children on the programme shared:

“My daughter found the programme very informative and enjoyable. She found the whole programme inspiring and exciting. She left each session with exhilaration telling me in detail of her experience. She was most impressed with the tutors and loved interacting with other pupils who were also attending. Overall, a very wonderful programme.”

“I believe it was a special experience that they wouldn’t normally have at their regular school. It’s a programme that brings together highly motivated students and helps build their confidence and enthusiasm. I was also truly impressed by the teachers and students who guided and supported them.”

GreenSTEM

The GreenSTEM programme, involving 38 students - a record number! - from four secondary schools - has again been a resounding success, fostering a passion for STEM while strengthening connections between schools.

PhD students from Imperial College, London, introduced students to an environmental research competition, sharing insights from their own scientific work. Over four sessions held at NHEHS from September to January, students from Greenford High School, Dormers Wells High School and Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls joined NHEHS Sixth Formers in developing their research skills and writing essays addressing key environmental challenges. The programme culminated in a prestigious event at the Natural History Museum in February, where students presented their essays to a panel of experts.

The students received valuable feedback, and prizes were awarded for the best essays and presentations. The event was overwhelmingly well received, with fantastic feedback from both our students and partnership schools.

From the students:

“The GreenSTEM project was an incredible journey that taught us so much, not just about STEM and sustainability, but also about teamwork, research, and public speaking.”

“We feel so lucky to have been part of this!”

Over 40 Year 12 students from four schools attended our NHEHS Healthcare Conference in May. The event began with an engaging talk on the importance of Dentistry from King’s College Dentistry student, Sabah Malik. Students also enjoyed excellent talks from four experts on a variety of healthcare topics and careers: Dr Carol Whelan, University College London, Dr Nick Oliver, Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust, Marirena Befaloukou, Imperial College London and Anastasia Ilina, Imperial College London. Students also took the stage to share some impressive work on cutting-edge interdisciplinary topics including CRISPR, dental nanotechnology, limb salvage techniques, premature baby care and cancer vaccines.

The conference was widely praised for being insightful, informative and inspiring. Students valued the opportunity to explore a variety of medical fields, gain a deeper understanding of university life and learn more about the application process. Many particularly appreciated the diverse range of speakers, especially the healthcare professionals who shared their experiences.

Healthcare Conference English conferences

The English department ran two conferences in 2024/25. As part of our National Poetry Day celebrations in October, NHEHS welcomed Daljit Nagra to our annual Poetry Conference. Year 10 NHEHS pupils were joined by over 150 students from Ealing Fields High School and Elthorne Park High School. Mr Nagra, whose poems often relate to the experience of Indians born in the UK, read some of his own work before discussing his writing principles in more detail. He led a number of activities to get students writing, which included a poem on the subject of things they like and a concept that could be displayed in a graph, chart or diagram.

Later in the year, Year 12 and 13 students from NHEHS, William Perkins School, Cardinal Wiseman School and Langley Grammar participated in an English Language Conference where they were treated to talks from: Fiona McPherson, a senior editor in the New Word team at the Oxford English Dictionary; Tim Grant, a professor of forensic linguistics and founding director at the Aston Institute for Forensic Linguistics at Aston University; and Jane Setter, professor of phonetics at the University of Reading with international visiting professor roles, co-editor of the Cambridge English Pronouncing Dictionary. It was a fascinating morning with insight into how English Language qualifications develop into real world careers.

We would like to warmly thank our donors from January 2025-January 2026
